Savage lifted his field glasses to his eyes and peered at the mansion. Although his vision as one of the Breed was superhuman, the lenses allowed him to zoom in on the illuminated window of the grand salon where Massioni and his men were gathered.

The seven Breed males evidently had plenty of cause for celebration. They greeted one another with a lot of laughter and back patting, a lot of ingratiating smiles and kowtowing for the dark-haired, hawk-nosed Vito Massioni from his underlings. No doubt the Red Dragon dealer and his cronies had been handsomely rewarded for their part in the spike of Rogue attacks the past few nights. Savage couldn’t wait to send them all to their final reward tonight.

“Light it up at your ready,” Trygg advised.

Savage smiled behind his binoculars. “With pleasure.”

Glancing away from the meeting taking place inside the mansion, he reached to retrieve the remote detonator. Normally he didn’t get invested in witnessing a target’s demise, but it was hard not to take some satisfaction in crashing Massioni’s little party tonight.

He brought the field glasses back up to his face—just in time to see that a woman had entered the room. The petite blonde wore a flashy red dress that clung to her slender body like liquid silk. The neckline plunged low in front, the slit in the skirt slicing high up her leg, baring a lot of creamy thigh with each gliding step she took toward Massioni.

What the f*ck?

Savage hadn’t realized there was a female in the mansion. Not that he felt much sympathy for anyone who associated with a thug like Massioni. And not that it should stop him from pushing the button on the detonator. But still…

His thumb froze, hovering over the trigger.

“Unidentified female on the premises,” he murmured into his mic. “Stand by, base.”

“Standing by,” Trygg said. Then he made a low, appreciative noise that might as well have been a wolf-whistle, coming from the eternally inscrutable warrior.

Yeah, the female was hot. Savage barely contained his own primal growl at the sight of all those slender curves poured into a column of scarlet silk. He’d long avoided blondes—for personal reasons of his own—but everything male in him responded to the sight of this one like flame to gasoline.

I love Kendall Ryan and her quick, sweet and sexy reads. Any book I read by her, I devour in no time. And after reading the Hitched series, I had to read this one since it was about the naughty Sterling Quinn.

Sterling and Camryn already know of each other through Olivia and Noah. They’ve never really hung out together and would be considered more as acquaintances then friends. However, it’s hard for anyone to not know who Sterling Quinn is and his bad boy reputation.

Sterling is given a deadline to marry in 6 months as part of his requirements to receive his inheritance. Sterling is a divorce attorney – marriage was never in the cards for him. He became even more jaded about true love and marriage after his father left his mom when she became sick.

When news of this makes the airwaves, Camryn in hired to help him out. Become his matchmaker. And she does believe in happy ever after. In finding your lobster. Just maybe not in this manor.

Watching these two being forced to work together is quite entertaining. They both fight the chemistry. She knows he’s nothing but heartache, even without the pending marriage. He knows that he’ll hurt her in the long run. But there is no denying the sparks between them – both in and out of the bedroom.

While I loved how everything played out in this book, I hated the cliché of needing to marry in order to inherit money. It was the same as the Hitch series and felt a little played out. But it was a great read other than that small gripe.

Kendall is always great at keeping me glued to the pages and rooting for the HEA. A perfect quick read.

I twist the doorknob, and finding it unlocked, let myself inside.

Sterling’s place is compact, but modern and classy. It suits him. After a quick glance around the living space, I spot him on the balcony outside, just beyond the glass doors at the far end of the living room. He’s facing away from me, his hands gripping the railing, his head bowed.

My smile from moments ago is gone. Seeing him like this—looking distraught—brings the reality of our situation crashing back.

Sterling suddenly turns and we lock eyes. A thousand emotions are revealed in his eyes, but mostly there’s anger. There’s also a sadness in his gaze that I’ve never seen. It’s haunting.

I swallow a lump in my throat, wondering what’s going on.

“Sterling?” I ask, slowly approaching the balcony.

It’s beautiful—plush pillows and twinkling lights, and a chilled bottle of white wine all nestled together in a romantic picnic for two.

He lets out a heavy sigh and runs one hand through his hair.

“This is beautiful,” I say since he hasn’t spoken, hasn’t even moved from the spot where he’s rooted, and his stony silence is killing me. “Are you okay?”

“Just fine,” he says curtly, his gaze looking past me.

He doesn’t seem fine. He seems off. Why go through all the effort if he’s just going to act sullen and withdrawn?

And what could have possibly changed in the twenty-four hours since we last spoke on the phone? He seemed so excited—like he hadn’t a care in the world. Now it seems he doesn’t want me here.

“If this is a bad time, if tonight doesn’t work . . .” I trail off, my voice suddenly shaky.

“The meal’s already prepared.” He brushes past me, headed toward the kitchen.

Unsure what to do, I follow behind him.

He’s acting like an asshole, and I suddenly feel so stupid for getting all done up tonight. I’m not going to stand around and embarrass myself by begging for his attention.

“You know what? Never mind. This was a bad idea, anyway. I’ll see myself out.” I turn and head for the front door, anger and rejection dueling inside me.

With him so near, the combination of his clean soap and his spicy cologne intoxicates me. Memories of our intimate dinner rush back. But apparently tonight is not meant to be a repeat. Waiting to see what he’ll say next, I inhale and hold my breath.

When he doesn’t continue, I ask, “Is everything okay?”

SHANNON WATCHED STEVE swing his ax. He was built like the very mountains he loved: strong and stable, with layers of hard-earned muscles born from honest, hard work. Pure perfection. And that hair? Shannon had been surprised by how much she’d missed Steve when she’d gone home for her eldest brother Cole’s wedding. She and Steve hadn’t spent more than a few stolen moments together during the weeks she was here for her first assignment. Usually she’d catch him working on equipment, or in his yard, before she returned to her uncle’s ranch in the evenings. He wiped sweat from his brow, his tanned skin glistening in the morning sun. “Need anything from town?” he asked, setting another log on the stump.

She couldn’t pry her eyes from his rippling abs and his bulbous biceps flexing with every move. “Town?”

He cocked a smile and hoisted the ax again. “Town. You know, the place where people who like Pinterest live?”

She forced her eyes away, glancing at the trees swaying in the breeze, the rocks at her feet, anywhere but at him.

“I know what town is. I’m just surprised you’re going there.” Everyone knew Steve hated to leave his precious mountain.

“Gotta take care of some business.”

Going into town was a big deal. Unlike a quick trip to the store from her apartment in Peaceful Harbor, the drive into town took at least thirty to forty-five minutes, depending on which town he was going to. She’d realized last night she’d forgotten two very important supplies. Pop-Tarts and toilet paper. She could probably live with the single roll of toilet paper she had in the cabin for another few days if she needed to, but Pop-Tarts were pretty much a necessity. Besides, maybe she could convince Steve to help her scout gray-fox habitats at dusk. Perfect!

“Can I come with you?” she asked hopefully. “I need to pick up a few things.”

“I’ll get them for you. What do you need?”

She bit her lower lip, willing herself not to fib. But if she asked him to pick up what she really needed, he’d leave and she’d have to go searching for habitats by herself. Now that she’d thought about going later with her yummy mountain man, she’d already settled on it in her mind.

“It’s girl stuff. You won’t want to get it.” So much for not fibbing. “Can I please go with you?” She gave him her best pleading look. “I promise not to talk your ear off.” Fib, fib, fib! She had no control over what came out of her mouth, especially around him.

He muttered under his breath and set the ax against the stump. “I’m not making a hundred stops.”

She leapt with delight and ran over to hug him. Her heel slipped out of her boot and she stumbled into him in a half hug, half full-body-draped-over-Steve embrace. His skin was hot, his body was hard, and getting harder by the second. He smelled like man and musk, and…she was still plastered against him.

She cleared her throat and managed, “Thank you.” Using his chest for leverage—yum, yum—she found her footing and pressed her heel back into her boot. “One stop. That’s it. Promise.”

“You’re excited to get those supplies.” He picked up the logs he’d chopped and piled them on his forearm like they were toothpicks.

“I’m just excited to be back. Maybe at dusk you can help me map out the habitats? It’ll be fun to scope them out together.”

He gave her a curious look. “Haven’t heard anyone describe hanging out with me as fun in a long time.”

“Then you’re hanging out with losers, and I’m taking that as a yes.” She grabbed the coffee mugs, unable to stop smiling.

“I’m leaving in twenty minutes.”

“I’ll be back lickety-split.” With a bounce in her step, she headed toward her cabin and heard him mutter, “Lickety-split,” followed by a chuckle.

My Review:

Midnight Untamed is the newest release in author Lara Adrian’s Midnight Breed series as well as novella number 15 in the 1,001 Dark Nights 2016 lineup. I have loved the midnight Breed series since first finding paranormal romance over ten years ago and I always look forward to a new release. Midnight Untamed is a prime example of all of the things Ms. Adrian does so well. This story was filled with heat, suspense, action, and even a bit of mystery and I devoured it in one sitting.

I love a good long-lost-love-reunited story and the reunion between Savage and Bella was done so beautifully. I loved that I got enough of their backstory to make me want a future for them and have me understanding all of the things that have gone on in their past. The pull between them was intense and meaningful and I loved going along on their journey of initial shock to an overwhelming feeling of rightness and ultimately ending with a sense of contentment no one could deny.

Along the way there was plenty of danger and suspense and we meet a character that I still have not been able to get out of my head. A man I really hope we get to learn more of because I can already tell his story is going to be heartbreaking and emotional as all get out! (I will say that when the 1,001 Dark Nights newsletter drops tomorrow, you’ll get a hint as to who this mystery man is and if we get to see more of him!) I won’t spoil anything for you but I know you will love this novella from start to finish as much as I did!

Whether you’re a die-hard Midnight Breed fan or a new reader, this is a story you’ve got to get on your bookshelf. Thank you, Ms. Adrian, for another amazing visit with some of my favorite vamps!

Q&A with Cat Schield– The Black Sheep’s Secret Child

How did you come up with the relationship between Savannah and Trent? I always start with the conflict. And nothing says trouble like two brothers involved with the same girl.
What is your favorite part about writing for Billionaires and Babies? Is there anything more adorable than alpha men with babies? The first meeting between Trent and his son is adorable. I absolutely love Dylan. He’s a charmer.
Many of your books feature children, is family important to you? Family is everything. But for me it’s not always about those you’re related to. I think it’s about those people who stick with you through thick and thin.
What was the first book that made you cry? Black Gold by Marguerite Henry
How long do you spend researching before beginning a book? I usually jump right in without much research. For me the fun of writing the story is immersing myself in the details of the world. And I do a lot of research. Much of it never shows up in the book because I tend to run wild finding out about things. For The Black Sheep’s Secret Child I spent a fair amount of time learning about record labels and how many of them have struggled in the digital age.
How do you select the names of your characters? I whip out my favorite baby book and flip through the pages until something seems right. In the case of the Club T’s books, I needed 3 men with “T” names. So I have Trent Caldwell, Nate Tucker and Kyle Tailor.
If you didn’t write, what would you do for work? I think I’d take up creating marketing materials for authors. Book covers. Book trailers. I have a blast working on my own stuff.
Do you believe in writer’s block? No. Some books are painfully hard to write. I think a lot of writers have avoidance tendencies. I’m always choosing between sitting down to the computer and pushing through a challenging scene or watching yet another HGTV show. Often HGTV wins.
What is your favorite thing about fall? Fall in Minnesota is such a beautiful time of year. The trees burst into glorious colors. The days are warm. The nights are cool. It smells like campfires and dry leaves.
Are you excited for Halloween? If so, do you have a favorite scary story? I love Halloween. The pumpkin carving. Handing out candy. My daughter is 17 and too old for me to take trick or treating and I miss it. There’s something magical about helping her pick out a costume and walking the neighborhood and seeing all the fantastic decorations. No favorite scary story, but I do love going through a haunted house. Creepy!

“I haven’t had any boyfriends since you,” I admitted, feeling kind of silly admitting it. At the same time, I felt strong. I’d never felt the need to fill a void in my life with a man. I’d never needed a man to define me. What Grant and I had had was special, and what we’d created together was even more special. I wasn’t about to let some shmuck looking to get a little piece of ass cheapen my whole experience with relationships.
The corners of Grant’s mouth were twitching, but he didn’t let the smile form. “What about dates?”
I leaned toward him. “Same story.”
He let the smile form then.
“And I thought we’d agreed to move on from the dating topic earlier tonight.” Giving him the look didn’t faze him—it never really had. Even my most impressive Look.
“Fine. No more talk about dating.” He lifted his hands in the air and pretended like he was getting back to finishing up the last few remnants of our gluttonous feast. When he just kept twirling the same fry in a gob of ketchup, I knew he hadn’t moved on yet. “How many have you had sex with?”
“Grant . . .”
“I need to know, Ryan. I know I don’t have any right to know. I also know you had a right to sleep with whoever you wanted.” He paused, his face looking like he was being tortured. “I just need to know.”
My lungs felt like limp bags when I thought about answering his question. Not because I was embarrassed or ashamed or anything like that, but because he’d know once I told him. He’d know the reason why, and he’d know he was that reason why.
He’d know I’d never really moved on from him, and I couldn’t have him knowing that because I needed to keep a careful distance between us. I needed to protect him, not from himself this time, but from me.
But even though I knew all of that, I also knew that the truth had never been optional when it came to Grant and me. Never a choice. The truth wasn’t what we picked when it was convenient. It had been the standard from the beginning, and if I had anything to do with it, it would remain the standard to the end.
The truth. I’d told him almost everything I had to. Almost. The one last thing I was withholding would have to come out soon.
“You were the first person I had sex with, Grant Turner.”
He slowly twisted toward me, his legs spreading wide, tucking around the outsides of mine. His hands lowered to my kneecaps, like he was trying to show me that no matter how I answered, he still wanted to be here with me—eating greasy food in an old diner that had already locked its doors.
One of my hands covered one of his. “And you were the last person I had sex with too.” It came out in one long exhale, my fingers braiding tighter through his with each word.
He was quiet for a minute. And then another. When his silence continued, my eyes lifted to see what was the matter.
His forehead was folded in half a dozen creases, his eyes narrowed in confusion. “Are you saying . . .?” He leaned in closer, confusion settling deeper.
“You’re the last person I had sex with.” I thought I’d spelled it out pretty solidly before.
His face ironed out, blinking like he was just waking up. “Does that mean . . .?”
I sighed. “I haven’t had sex in seven years? Yeah. That’s what it means.”
Glancing behind the counter, I made sure the owner and cook, who’d generously agreed to let us stay late, were still way in the back and preoccupied with something other than the conversation happening at the two end counter stools.
Grant leaned closer, his head moving just outside of mine. His breath was just rushed enough to notice. “Are you saying I’m the last man you’ve had inside you?”
His words surprised me, sending a shiver winding down my spine. I didn’t want him to know that his question or his proximity or his labored breaths were affecting me, but they were. I was feeling very, very affected in certain locations of my body.
“I think that’s the general definition of sex, yeah,” I answered, glancing down to make sure nothing too obvious was showing through the thin material of the dress. Thank god I’d gone with the thicker lined bra, because Grant’s eyes followed mine a moment later.
When my gaze dropped to a certain spot on his body, I found his own arousal not so easily disguised. It made the inhale I’d been taking sound more like more of a gasp than a breath. He knew what I was looking at, he knew what was on display, and he didn’t do anything to adjust or hide it. He wanted me to know. He wanted me to see.
Realizing that sent a rush of pleasure through my body, pooling between my legs.
“I’m going to kiss you, Ryan.” His head nuzzled my neck. “I should probably ask permission, but fuck, I don’t want to, because I have to kiss you. Whether you think it’s a good idea or not.”
My arms went limp, my legs following, from the sickness I had for this man. The one that crippled me. The one that paralyzed me. My eyes squeezed closed when his face came around in front of mine. “You don’t want to kiss me, Grant.”
He pulled me closer. “Like hell I don’t.”
