Carrie has really upped her writing with this book.

Hometown Heartless is a standalone from Carrie Aarons and one that took me by surprise. I have read a fair amount of Carrie’s books and this is first book that I have seen Carrie take on a topic that is riddled with so much emotion and depth to it.

Carrie has always been an author that I could depend on for a sweet romance with a bit of drama sprinkled in her stories. But none of her other books compare to this one. It’s my first five-star book from her and a book that shook me in ways I had not anticipated.

Hometown Heartless is about two high school friends with always skirted around being more but never took that leap. When Everett chose to serve his country, he and Kennedy took that their feelings to paper and opened up more in those letters than they allowed themselves before he left.

Now Everett has returned home and he’s not the same person he was when he left. He’s haunted, secretive and keeps everyone at a distance. As much as Everett tries, the connection he shares with Kennedy will eventually blow up.

Carrie does a phenomenal job of making this story about more than the romance and the explosive chemistry between Everett and Kennedy. It’s a story about overcoming demons, healing and finding yourself again.

Kennedy and Everett both grow a lot in this book, both together and separately. Carrie allows everything to happen naturally and organically with these characters. The flow of this book blends everything together so seamlessly and it was impossible to put down.

Carrie – you just reached another level in writing. You can see how much research you put into this book to make it all the more authentic. Hometown Heartless is a great way to start off my 2020 reading list!

Christ, nothing is ever simple with her.

“Why did you say it like that?”

“Did I not do it right?” she mumbles to herself. “See, I knew I was doing something wrong.”

“No, why did you say bridegroom?”

“Oh, well, that’s what you would be. You see, that’s what they used to call men who were soon to be married . . . a bridegroom. But then somewhere along the way they shortened it to groom. But if you marry me, I would give you the dignified pleasure of retaining the honorable title of bridegroom.”

“Don’t call me bridegroom.”

“Boss man bridegroom?” she asks with a cheeky grin.

How the fuck did I allow myself to get in this position? With my quirky and sometimes annoying but mostly efficient assistant, kneeling in front of me . . . proposing.

Proposing to me.

In a pair of belly-covering slacks and suspenders, hair pulled back into a tight bun like she often wears it, looking up at me through her red-framed glasses, her bright blue eyes shining past the lenses, begging me to go along with this ridiculous scheme I suggested.

Like the goddamn idiot I am, I thought hey, why not start an HR nightmare and have my assistant ask me to marry her?

Don’t worry, so am I.

Where do I even start? Maybe from the beginning?

Here is a quick rundown: my ex, who used to work with me, left me for bigger and better things. We don’t talk about her, ever, because she took my heart with her. Instead, I buried myself in my work. I became a hermit in my office, firing one assistant after another because they weren’t good enough or their voice annoyed me, or they thought salt was sugar and gave me one bad cup of coffee that ended their career at Westin Enterprises—that mistake was on them.

The Fight for Forever is the final book in the Legend Trilogy. Meghan wraps this story up well, albeit a bit too fast near the end compared to the rest of the story. However, it still ends with a bang and tied up all the loose ends.

This trilogy is probably my second favorite from Meghan and I think that’s because this story felt more authentic and real to me. In all honesty, regardless if the characters don’t truly match Meghan and Jacob – these are the two people I kept imagining when I read this book. It’s the passion, the connection and their demeanors that just made me see them in these characters.

Meghan does a nice job of blending the romance with the suspense in this book and the whole story. There is never any confusion as to what is going on and the flow of the story, while at times slow for me, made sense. Things had to happen in order for everything to come together right. And the chemistry between these two is off the charts and it’s not just the attraction. You can tell that their affection goes deeper than that even without it being said.

Overall, this is a trilogy that any romance lover will really enjoy. Meghan does a great job of giving her readers just enough in each book to keep them vested, loving the characters and wanting to see how things end for everyone involved. While it may have wrapped up a little too fast for me, I truly enjoyed how it ended.

KEANU
I like her,” Kent says, talking in hushed tones as we rinse and stack the dishwasher.
“I love her.” I’m not ashamed to admit it. For years, I told my family nothing about the girl who had captured my heart. Now, things have changed, and I’m not going to hide her or my feelings anymore.
“I know, bro. I always have.”
“I’m not letting her go this time,” I say, wiping down the counter. “Selena is it for me.”
Kent eyes me circumspectly. “You really mean that.”
I toss the damp dishcloth in the sink. “Yeah. I do.”
He thumps me in the shoulder. “Guess I’ve permanently lost my wingman, huh?”
“I was never a true wingman, and we both know it.”
“Yeah. You were a miserable fuck most of the time. I’ve seen you smile more this past twenty-four hours than I have in the last two years.”
“She makes my heart sing.”
He sticks two fingers in his mouth, gagging. “Fuck no. Not you too.” He shakes his head. “There is no one left. All my brothers have turned to the dark side.”
Only Kent could refer to love as a darkness. Like it’s an illness or something.
“Love isn’t a burden, bro. It’s the best feeling in the world. Even when the girl of your dreams yanks your beating heart out of your chest and stomps all over it, it’s still worth every ounce of pain. Wait and see. You’ll meet a girl, and she’ll nail your heart to the wall, and you’ll be powerless to do anything about it.”
He shakes his head. “It’s not gonna happen.”
“Why the hell not?” I grab two bottles of water out of the refrigerator while I eye my cynical brother.
“Because we both know I’ll somehow fuck it all up.”

Releasing Keanu is definitely one of the lesser dramatic but sweeter books in this series. However, it does have some dark undertones to it. It can be easily read as a standalone within the series. Siobhan does a superb job of giving you glimpses of the other characters in her series and it’s just the right amount to give you want you need in this story but make you want to read their stories too (if you have not already).

Anyway, I digress. Releasing Keanu may not have all the dramatics and flare as some of the other books in this series, but it is just as intense read as though. It has some dark undertones due to Selena’s past so be warned that certain parts might be triggers for some readers. Siobhan (like she always does) does not make light of any situation but also tries to keep from going too dark too. It is very emotionally charged read, more than I anticipated.

This is definitely powerful story of true love. I love Keanu and Selena so much. I will be honest – they were not a couple high on my list for wanting their story, but I am so glad that I read it. They quickly became a favorite of mine.

Selena is an extremely strong and unbreakable woman. Her past has made her experience things we could never conjure up in our worst nightmares. Yet, she refuses to allow it to define her and run her life. However, she does have her moments when her past returns and things become too much for her.

Keanu is the most understanding, empathetic and selfless character I have read in quite some time. Hell – I wish he was real. LOL From their past relationship, he already knows how to handle Selena and will stop at nothing from keeping her by his side.

Siobhan writes these characters and their actions exquisitely. These two are so compatible and Siobhan shows not only their weaknesses but matches them perfectly with their strengths and they are this super power couple.

You can see that Siobhan has truly done her research on many things within this book because it all is very accurate and real. This is very little drama and action in this book. Instead, Siobhan chose to focus more on Selena, her healing and mending the relationship with Keanu. While the ending felt rushed, I think it was done on purpose so the focus wouldn’t be on the more dramatic parts.

Overall, another great book in the Kennedy Boys and another couple to add to my list of faves.

The Trouble with Gravity is standalone within the Gravity series. You do not need to read any of the other books to thoroughly enjoy this one.

Initially after reading this book, I truly loved it. Now that it’s been about two weeks (completely forgot to write review), I have to say that my love for this book isn’t quite as high. It’s not to say that I still didn’t really enjoy it, but I can sit back and relook at everything instead of that through that initial high you get when you finishing a really good read.

Kai and Sebastian’s story is a sweet romance but it starts off very rocky. Sebastian is a selfish asshole who has been burned in the past. But he’s allowed those past problems dictate a lot in his life, especially how he handles things. Kai has overcome some difficult times in her life but there are still things that she hasn’t been able to face head on.

When Kai auditions for a part in production that Sebastian is running, she’s not sure she is right for the part. Sebastian has his own personal reasons for wanting Kai to take the lead and Kai has her own fears to face in order to take part. However, they both aren’t exactly what one would call friendly with one another. The encounters they have had are heated, at best. But at the time winds down, Kai finds herself seeing less reasons to not take the role.

Allen plays this story out at the perfect pace. Kai and Sebastian slowly to get to know one another on the professional level but also somewhere along the lines, it turns into a friendship. And then when they both stop fighting the chemistry between them, it becomes more.

I love that there aren’t any clichés in this book and everything that happens feels so real. As I said – I don’t have the same high as when I finished it, but I still remember so much about this book. And for me, that still makes for a great book to read.

The Trouble With Gravity is another great read from K.K. Allen.
