Genre: Dark Mafia Romance

He consumed my mind. I never even crossed his.
From the moment I met Michael, mysteriously brooding and dressed like a dark
angel, there was something electric between us. Or so I thought.
What I believed was a seductive and undeniably raw attraction has ended up
being something else entirely, something I never foresaw.
Because he’s a skilled liar and a master manipulator, and I downright misread
his intentions.
And now I’m afraid that falling for the man in black might become my biggest
regret.
Michael
An overwhelming remorse haunts me after losing my fiancée, but I’m not a man
who can afford to lower my guard.
I’m a ruthless criminal, one of the top members of the merciless mafia, the
Chicago Syndicate, and I moved back home to keep to myself and do a job.
But when a curvaceous pastry chef with a beautiful smile and a possible link to
my former life catches me in a reckless moment, I’m forced to watch her and
strategize a plan.
Because I’m not sure if she’s out to get me or if she’s just an innocent
civilian who doesn’t know that the restaurant she works at is actually a front
to launder Syndicate money.
And I intend to find out if she’s playing me while I’m playing her. But then
the demons that haunt me force me to make a huge mistake…

Deceit has a price—I just have to make sure I don’t pay with her life.

A standalone novel from the Chicago Syndicate world.

Soraya Naomi has once again knocked my socks off with her infallible writing style and astounding characters.

The Man In Black is the tenth book in Soraya’s Chicago Syndicate series, but it can easily be read as a standalone within in this series.  So for those of you who have not read any of her books yet (WHY NOT?!?), grab this one and see why I love this series so much.

The Man in Black is Michael’s story.  He is reeling from the loss of his fiancé and never wants to go down that path again.  He takes his job very seriously and doesn’t care for recklessness.

Brielle has been used to living on her own for the last several years so when Michael starts poking around her and becoming strangely interested in her, it throws her off kilter a bit.

I am not saying anything else aside from this.  This book should be read with as little information as possible so it does not take away from the suspense.  Soraya has this brilliant way of bringing together a strong plot line (in this case a spy amongst them) and a side plot line of romance and making them work cohesively to deliver one h*ll of a great story.

Absolutely everything flows wonderfully in this story.  You are pulled into the suspense and mystery of the mafia along with the insane attraction between Michael and Brielle.  I love the banter between them and let’s just say there is no shortage of hot attraction.

If you have not gathered yet, Soraya is one of my top mafia writers.  She stays true to the lifestyle while still writing very intriguing stories and strong characters.  I highly recommend this book and her other 9 books in this series!!

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Rachel Van Dyken comes a new story in her Eagle Elite series…

Every family has rules, the mafia just has more….
Do not speak to the bosses unless spoken to.
Do not make eye contact unless you want to die.
And above all else, do not fall in love.
Renee Cassani’s future is set.
Her betrothal is set.
Her life, after nannying for the five families for the summer, is set
Somebody should have told Vic Colezan that.
He’s a man who doesn’t take no for an answer.
And he only wants one thing.
Her.
Somebody should have told Renee that her bodyguard needed as much discipline as the kids she was nannying.
Good thing Vic has a firm hand.

Heat wrapped itself around my body. It soothed my soul. I think I took my first deep breath in those seconds, my first big exhale, followed by another deep breath. I pressed my hand against the heat, and came into contact with a hard chest. I didn’t even care that it was the chest of my father’s murderer.
I was sick.
Sick that my murderer made me well.
I wrapped my arms around his neck and breathed him in. We were walking. I didn’t want to spoil the moment by speaking, so I kept my eyes closed, my voice silent as he walked and walked some more.
A door opened and closed.
It smelled like cigars and Christmas spices.
Gently, I was being set down. My body came into contact with something deliciously soft, and it wrapped around me.
And then whatever I was on moved, dipped under the weight of the one carrying me. Maybe if I just kept my eyes closed I could imagine that it was Vic without the word murderer hanging over his head like a blazing red sign.
Maybe I could give in to the fantasy that he was just a guy, I was just a girl. Spending the night in each other’s arms, using each other’s heat for energy.
Blankets were piled over my body, pushing me into the mattress with their weight. And then bulky arms pulled me back against the rock-hard chest again.
“Sleep.” His voice carried like a gunshot in the dark; it was a harsh whisper, a command I wasn’t allowed to say no to. Sometimes, you just need to be forced into rest—and when he’d walked in, I’d been tossing and turning in that stupid chair trying to get comfortable for hours.
But now? Now my body was heavy. My mind was silent.
“Did you kill anyone tonight?” I asked the dreaded question. I wanted to know if the hands that were holding me were hands that had washed off blood. I’d tortured myself with ideas of what he was really going to do tonight. Tortured myself with visions of my dad’s face begging for death.
His body was rigid as he bit out, “No, Renee. I didn’t kill anyone tonight.”
“Are you going to kill anyone tomorrow?”
He sighed. “Well, it is a Friday, those are my favorite days to take a life. What do you think?”
I smiled even though it wasn’t funny. “Sorry, stupid question.”
“Which earned an equally stupid answer.”
“Hey, Vic?” I turned to face him. His eyes were so bright in the darkness that it startled me a bit before I could gather my thoughts. “Did he really beg you?”
“Don’t make me talk about it. Not now. Not when you’re tired and upset. Not when you look at me like you’re disappointed. I can handle a lot of things, Renee, your disappointment in me is not one of them.”
I nodded. “I don’t want to be.”

* review contains strong language *

If you read my review of Heartless (first book), you know that I hated Carter with every fiber of my being. And I still do. HA! I actually think Willow made me hate him even more, if that were possible.

So why the four stars if I loathe a main character so much???

I can’t connect to him in an emotional way. I know I am totally in the minority on this one, but I really struggle to see any good in him. Even as we get glimpses of what his past was like – it still does not excuse for the horrific ways he treats Aria. His actions and what he does – I just have a hard time understanding his reasoning for everything. He doesn’t care for her – she brings him pleasure and is a pawn in this war

Aria is a tortured young woman who has no idea what the fuck to think or do. Carter has her so messed up, that she does things because she knows it’s what he wants and it prevents her from getting punished. How can she love a man who treats her like a fucktoy and nothing more?? When she is upset, he soothes her by giving her pleasure. Uhhh…not exactly how you treat someone that you want to stand by your side. I mean hey – the scenes are hot as hell and Aria enjoys the hell out of it (which she herself finds fucked up). But no, I just don’t get it.

So again – why did I rate this 4 stars if I have such an issue with pretty much the main plot??

This is where my fucked up mind comes into play. While I do not give two shits about Cater, what I find intriguing is Aria. She herself sees how demented and fucked up the whole situation is. It is her inner strength that has me loving this book – in different ways, she defies Cater and I love it. She pushes him and makes him do things he normally wouldn’t do. It is her feistiness and refusal to give in completely that keeps me coming back.

Yea – my feelings on Carter may be in the complete minority on this but it is Aria who has me loving this story so much. I can’t wait to see what Willow brings us in the next book because that ending has me going, “HELL YEA BITCHES!!!”

When someone needs to disappear, the Chicago mob calls on Joe Rossi. A man who can move without a sound, and kill without a word, they don’t call him the Shadow for nothing.

This time, it’s a New York crime family in need of his skills, but it takes one glimpse of her to make him agree to the job.

It takes one look …
One dance …
One word …
One smile to captivate a man.

And one second to kill a woman because of it, too.

Not all monsters hide in the shadows.
How are you supposed to see them coming?

CAPTIVATED MUSIC PLAYLIST

Sizzling, suspenseful, and sweet is how I would describe Captivated by Bethany-Kris. However, I enjoyed this book the most because I was not able to figure out the plot. Yes, I had some idea on how it would go but was pleasantly surprised as I continued to read. Bethany-Kris also wrote Joe, a mafia hitman, so well that I completely forgave him for being a killer. You will absolutely fall in love with this character as well.

Joe is summoned to New York to help the mafia bosses get rid of some high-profile people. It is in New York he sees the one of the boss’s daughter, Lilliana, and instantly is attracted. Now this is what I love about Captivated, it is not an instant fall in love with each other book filled with just sex scenes. Bethany-Kris takes her time writing the romance between Joe and Lilliana all the while adding in suspense. I have read a few books this year that have tried to combine these two genres together and I felt they did not flow as well as Captivated. The suspense did not feel like a second thought which was refreshing.

I will also admit having a hot mafia bad ass is always a bonus in a story. I love that Joe is tough but to those who are close to him, he is sweet and gentle. Lilliana is going through her own internal battles (I don’t want to give away some of the plot) but I like that Joe allows her to go through it. It is not just instantly written away by Bethany-Kris. This is for sure a hard copy worthy book.

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT

“Drink?”

Liliana made a face. “You know, I probably shouldn’t.”

“Ah, dancer.”

She shrugged. “Everything needs to be exactly as they want it.”

“As long as one of the things they want isn’t for you to starve yourself, or work yourself dead then … whatever makes you happy, Tesoro.”

“Some girls do.”

“Hmm?”

“Starve themselves down to nothing but sticks in the hopes of being noticed, or whatever the case may be. Their brains and mind get so sick from it all that they don’t even realize how much they need help. It’s sad, really. Scary. Once, I might have been one of those girls, too. Not so much anymore.”

Joe glanced down at the glass of whiskey he had poured, and twirled it a bit making the ice inside click against crystal. “Can’t say that’s a bad thing, though.”

“No, growth is … good.”

“It can be.”

Joe kept his gaze on the whiskey, and Liliana suddenly decided to be a little bold. They weren’t outside where anyone could see, or where her sister was right there to watch and make her feel nervous. There was no stumbling over her words, or feeling skittish.

Really, Joe didn’t make her anything but comfortable.

And a little hot sometimes.

Crossing the distance between them, Liliana came to stand right in front of Joe. It was only then that he finally glanced up from the glass in his hands to give her one of his slow, easy grins. The kind that made her stomach do that weird clenching thing—like butterflies for big girls.

“Hey,” she whispered.

Joe tipped his head to the side a bit. “Hey.”

“Thanks for helping me today.”

“Don’t mention it.”

“Lucky you were there to help me, really.”

Joe quirked a brow high. “Yeah, lucky.”

Before Liliana could over think her next move, and while she was still feeling that bit of boldness in her heart, she stood on her tiptoes, and kissed Joe. It was a fast kiss—nothing too spectacular, and certainly not lingering. Just a sweet press of her lips against his, and then she was pulling away again.

As fast as it had happened, it was over.

Then, she waited.

For him, that was.

Joe’s gaze darted to hers, and she swore she saw a flash of heat behind his eyes. Without ever looking away from her, he set that glass of whiskey to the wet bar, grabbed her waist with a firm grip, and brought her even closer. She didn’t even get the chance to take a breath before he kissed her.

His kiss was not like hers.

Deeper, harder, and hungrier. A teasing stroke of his tongue against the seam of her lips, demanding she open up to him, and let him in. She couldn’t even help herself but to part her lips, and taste him.

Joe pulled her closer still until her chest was molded against his, and she found it hard to take in a decent breath. And only then did he pull away. His hand came up to cup her cheek, and his thumb stroked her cheekbone with a soft touch.

“I mean, if you’re going to kiss me,” he murmured as he pulled away, “then at least really kiss me, Liliana.”

She laughed breathlessly. “I wanted to see …”

“What?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did you see whatever it was?” he asked.

Liliana grinned widely. “I did.”

“And?”

“Would you like to go out with me sometime, Joe?”

About the Author:

International bestselling author Cora Kenborn writes twisted romances about damaged bad boys and feisty heroines. She promises her readers a happily ever after, although she may or may not take them on an emotional rollercoaster before giving it to them. (Okay, she totally will.)

A Southern girl from North Carolina, Cora says “y’all” way too much and has a lifelong addiction to sweet tea. She refuses to “adult” without coffee, thinks pajamas are acceptable daywear, and considers note-taking during true crime shows to be perfectly normal. On the rare occasion that Cora has free time, she spends it avoiding laundry and convincing her family that Hot Pockets are an acceptable dinner.

Oh, and autocorrect thinks she’s obsessed with ducks.

EXCERPT:

His large palm still gripped my shoulder, and my hand shook as I squeezed his fingers. Electric shocks jolted up my arm, but I forced myself to maintain the contact, lifting our entwined hands and settling them between us. He watched every movement, his eyes never straying. It was as if once he looked away, the moment would evaporate.

I wouldn’t let that happen. This moment meant everything.

For years, I’d held onto the belief that he’d walked away from me without a second thought. I’d tried my best to hate him for the events that led up to his abandonment and the mind games that plagued me afterward. However, what he’d said to me at Brody’s left me starving for the truth. I had to know, even if what I found out left me in more jagged pieces than before.

“What did you mean when you said I didn’t know the whole story?”

“Now’s not the time for this, Leighton.” Mateo let out a heavy sigh and pulled away from me, severing our brief connection.

He could pull away all he wanted, but I wasn’t backing down. “Really? Where else do we have to go?”

His eyes narrowed. “You want to hear the truth?”

The sudden predatory danger radiating off him shook me. I was honestly confused if I did or didn’t, but I stood my ground. “I think I deserve it.”

Mateo let out a sardonic laugh. “You think this is about what you deserve?” He stalked toward me, backing me up until my spine bumped against the hard marble of the kitchen island. “What exactly do you think happened that night, Star? You think I just didn’t feel like having the perfect life with the perfect girl and decided to piss it all away?”

“I—I don’t…” My words broke off and stuck to the inside of my throat like molasses. All I could breathe in was the scent of his leather jacket as he planted a hand on either side of me. We were so close that if he took a deep breath, his black T-shirt would rub against my tank top and judging from the outline of the six-pack hugging the fabric, I wouldn’t survive the impact.

My gaze still traced the lines indenting his shirt when his hands settled on my hips, and I found myself being lifted into the air. My lips had just started forming the word “no” when my ass landed on the cold marble of the island with a hard slap, and Mateo slid in between my open knees.

“Have a seat, Star,” he said as if I weren’t already in place. It didn’t matter that I couldn’t speak. The deadly look in his eyes would’ve been enough to silence me. “What I have to say may knock you off that pedestal you’ve put yourself on.”

My chest heaved as he wedged himself tightly in between my legs.

“You think I sacrificed you? You immediately thought the worst and damned me without knowing the hell I went through. Get ready, little lamb. You’re about to find out the meaning of real sacrifice.”
