Zakara, the daughter of one of the mightiest Eternal Guardians, is his perfect woman. But she’s impervious to Ryder’s advances. Each attempt to sway her to his will pushes him deeper into a dreamscape she seems to be controlling. To survive, Ryder will need to find a way to master his sexy new prey. Excerpt:

The door swung open in front of her. She gasped and jerked back. Then focused on Ryder—the man who’d just turned her world upside down in every way possible—as he stepped into the room barefoot, wearing those low-riding linen pants she remembered from last night and a heavy red flannel shirt he had to have gotten from that closet.

“You’re awake.” He closed the door at his back and smiled down at her, his dark hair rumpled, his cheeks rosy from the cold, a sexy layer of scruff on his jaw making him look drop-dead gorgeous in the early morning light. “I thought you’d sleep awhile longer.”

“I…” Holy hell, her brain was complete mush. She willed herself to step away from him, but her legs didn’t seem to want to listen. The scents of leather and pine with just a hint of citrus surrounded him as he moved toward her, making her whole body melt with the remembered feel of his fragrant skin rubbing up against hers.

“I couldn’t sleep so I went for a walk. I didn’t want to wake you.” He reached for her arms, gently tugging her close as he ran his hands up and down her tight muscles, then leaned down and softly kissed her.

Her head grew light. She lifted her lips to his without even realizing she was doing so and sighed as his mouth brushed hers. He drew back and smiled down at her, still massaging her arms, still as blindingly beautiful as the sun. And as she blinked up at him and tried to tell herself he was a stranger, that she should be wary and cautious and smart, she realized…she didn’t want to be any of those things. She wanted him. Here, now, all over again. She didn’t care about the consequences.

Something in his eyes heated, and he leaned down and whispered, “I want you again too,” just before he kissed her once more. Only this kiss wasn’t soft and gentle and chaste. It was wet and erotic and demanding, and it burned through her entire body like molten lava on the move.

She was breathless when he drew away from her lips. Fuzzy-headed when he squeezed her arms and said, “But first we need to talk.”

ABOUT ELISABETH NAUGHTON:

Elisabeth Naughton is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author. From Elisabeth: “I was never one of those people who knew they wanted to be an author at the age of six. I didn’t have imaginary friends. I didn’t write stories in my journal or entertain my relatives by firelight after Thanksgiving dinner. For the most part, I was just a normal, everyday kid. I liked to read, but I wasn’t exceptional at it. And when my teachers complimented me on my writing abilities, I brushed them off. I did, however, always have a penchant for the unique and absurd. And as my mother told me all throughout my childhood, I should have been an actress—I was a drama queen before my time.

“Years ago, my husband bought me Scarlett: The Sequel to Gone With The Wind. If you ever saw the book, you know it’s a long one. I sat and read that thing from cover to cover, and dreamed of one day being a writer. But I didn’t actually try my hand at writing until years later when I quit my teaching job to stay home with my kids. And my husband? After that week of reading where I neglected him and everything else until I finished Scarlett, he vowed never to buy me another book again. Little did he know I’d one day end up sitting at a keyboard all day drafting my own stories.

“My writing journey has not been easy. I didn’t just sit down one day, decide I was going to write a book and voila! sell my very first attempt. As most authors will probably agree, the path to publication is filled with hours of work, pulling all-nighters I thought I’d given up in college, sacrifices, rejections, but a love I discovered along the way I just can’t live without. Instead of a big, thick book to read by lamplight (I do read much smaller ones when I get the chance), I’ve traded in my reading obsession for a laptop. And I’ve never been happier.

“I’m one of the lucky ones. I have a wonderful family and fabulous husband who put up with my writing—and obsessive personality—even when life is chaotic. More than once my kids have been late to swimming or baseball because I needed just five more minutes to finish a scene. Their support and encouragement mean the world to me. I also have amazing friends and a support network I couldn’t survive without. So to all of you out there who have encouraged me along the way, sent me emails and fan letters, phone calls and congratulations, I just want to say, thank you. You make this whole writing gig that much more enjoyable. I truly wouldn’t be here without you.”

My Review:

Ensnared is the newest in author Elisabeth Naughton’s Eternal Guardians series and is the latest release in the 2019 1,001 Dark Nights lineup.  I always know I can count on a stellar read from Ms. Naughton and this was no exception.  I loved it!

I adore this series’ spin on the paranormal and Greek mythology.  It’s always interesting and entertaining.  Ryder and Kara were two more prime examples of the rich characters Ms. Naughton creates.  Kara is one kick ass heroine and Ryder is one deliciously sexy alpha male.  Their journey is filled with trials and tribulations and, if you can believe it, a dash of humor.  It’s nice to know that even otherworldly parents are as overbearing as us mere mortals 😉

If you’re looking for a sexy sweet read guaranteed to have you glued to each page, Ensnared needs to be on your list! Whether you’re new to Elisabeth Naughton’s work or this is the first you’re hearing of her, I know you’ll love this book.

EXCERPT:

She’d never been to this beach. She didn’t know if it was somewhere in Argolea—the blessed realm created by Zeus for the ancient heroes’ ancestors—or if she was somewhere in the human realm. All she knew was that she liked it. She liked how peaceful it was. Liked how breathtaking the scenery was. Liked that here—wherever she’d taken herself this time—no one was telling her what to do or pressuring her to be something she wasn’t.

“I’d say you look lost, but something tells me you are exactly where you want to be,” a deep male voice said at her back.

Kara whipped around, her long blonde hair blocking her vision before she brushed it aside, and stared at the man reclined on a padded chaise lounge on the beach. A man and chaise that hadn’t been there only moments before. A man who was vaguely familiar though she couldn’t figure out why.

“I…who are you?” she asked.

“Who do you want me to be?”

His question made her blink. Who did she want him to be? She had no idea. All she knew was that an odd heat was building inside her. One she’d never experienced before.

When he only continued to stare at her, she narrowed her eyes, running her gaze from his thick dark hair down his very muscular body. With his hands clasped behind his neck, his expression expectant, he looked relaxed and just the slightest bit amused. But there was a mysterious glint to his blue-green eyes that belied his stress-free exterior. And though he was gorgeous—tall, dark, and handsome in every way with that chiseled jaw, lush lips, and mesmerizing eyes—something in the back of her mind warned her to be careful.

“Where did you come from?” she asked hesitantly. “We both know you weren’t here two seconds ago.”

One side of those perfect lips curled. “I’m sure if you concentrate, you’ll know exactly where I came from, Zakara.”

She didn’t like his riddles. And she didn’t like that he knew her name when she was still struggling to figure out who he was and why he was so familiar. But the longer he stared at her, the warmer she grew. And as his words circled in her head, it suddenly hit her like a baseball bat right to the forehead.

“You’re that guy…” Her eyes grew wide with disbelief. “From my dreams.”

He chuckled—a low, deep, captivating sound that was too perfect to be real. “That I am.”

Excerpt:

“Gemma!”

She glanced in the direction that her dog had run. She hated storms. Her parents and Kyle knew that. Why hadn’t they helped her? Anger seethed within her. They hadn’t helped because they wanted to leave Daisy behind.

Well, Daisy was hers, and if she had to leave her friends and her home, she wasn’t leaving her dog.

“Gemma!”

She ignored both her parents, who were now shouting her name as she raced after Daisy. If she had to carry the forty-pound dog to the boat, then that’s what she’d do. Just as soon as she found Daisy.

Another flash of lightning bathed the land in light, giving her just a glimpse of the dog as she headed toward the house. Gemma ran as fast as her seven-year-old legs would carry her. She reached the house and Daisy.

“Hey, girl,” she said to the terrified dog. “It’s going to be all right.”

It took her four tries before she was able to lift the dog. She shook badly, but at least she wasn’t trying to get free. Gemma knew her parents were going to be furious with her. She didn’t know why they were sneaking away in the middle of the night in a storm, but the fear in her father’s voice and her mother’s face let her know that the questions would have to wait.

In less than two hours, they had packed up all they could and put it on the boat her father owned. She’d asked where they were headed, but her parents hadn’t answered and her brother had shot her an irritated look.

Once she got on the boat with Daisy, she hoped someone would tell her something. She hated not knowing what was going on. Kyle didn’t care. He always said that their parents would tell them when they needed to know.

Gemma stumbled and fell to her knees. She pitched forward so that she had to release Daisy in order to catch herself, but she managed to keep a tight hold of the leash and pull the dog back to her. Daisy seemed to like being held, so she didn’t put up a fight.

“I’m coming!” Gemma shouted, hoping her family could hear her.

She couldn’t see the dock through the driving rain and dark. Which was odd. There was supposed to be a light on the dock. She knew the way to the water, so she hadn’t gone the wrong way. But…why wasn’t the light on?

About the 1001 Dark Nights Bundle Authors:

New York Times and USA Today best-selling author Heather Graham has always been an avid reader, from classics to sci-fi, mystery, horror, thriller, romance, and all kinds of non-fiction. She’s fairly certain that her mom’s deliciously crazy family–arriving in the US a bit before her birth from Ireland–gave her the love of storytelling. She started out in theater and commercials, but once her children began to arrive, she stayed home and gave writing a try. She’s incredibly grateful to be doing what she’s doing for a living. Heather belongs to MWA, RWA, Sisters in Crime, HWA, and ITW, and has the recipient of the RWA Lifetime Achievement Award, a Silver Bullet for charitable works, and this year, she will receive the Thriller Master title from ITW. She has over 200 novels in print, and has been published in 22 languages.

C.D. Reiss is a USA Today bestseller. She still has to chop wood and carry water, which was buried in the fine print. Her lawyer is working it out with God but in the meantime, if you call and she doesn’t pick up, she’s at the well, hauling buckets.

Born in New York City, she moved to Hollywood, California to get her master’s degree in screenwriting from USC. In case you want to know, that went nowhere, but it did give her a big enough ego to write novels.

Critics have dubbed the books “poetic,” “literary,” and “hauntingly atmospheric,” which is flattering enough for her to put it in a bio, but embarrassing enough for her not to tell her husband, or he might think she’s some sort of braggart who’s too good to chop a cord of wood.

If you meet her in person, you should call her Christine.

New York Times and USA Today Bestselling author Kristen Proby is the author of the bestselling With Me In Seattle and Love Under the Big Sky series. “Good morning, darlin’. Could I interest you in some breakfast sausage?”

The woman turned, her long, dark curls swinging around her shoulders. A look of disgust quickly washed over her face as her eyes locked on my bulge.

Ay dios mio, you’ve got to be f#cking kidding me,” she muttered, immediately taking her briefcase from the counter and marching to the front door, her red-bottomed heels clacking loudly on the hardwood.

“What’s the matter?” I asked, stumbling after her.

“Last time I do a favor for a friend,” she said under her breath, slamming the front door shut behind her.

Favor. Friend. Beautiful woman in a pencil skirt. Charlotte’s hotshot lawyer friend from Los Angeles.

Oh f#ck.

“Hey, uh, Valencia, wait up!”

I burst through the door to find her paused on the top step of the porch. She turned sharply to look me dead on, the fire in her eyes enough to burn me straight through.

“It’s Valentina,” she spat, crossing her arms and cocking her hip to the side.

“Valentina, right. My mistake. Listen, I’m really sorry about all this. We were out late last night for—”

“For the opening, I know. I was supposed to be there, but something came up at work. So instead, I got my ass onto a last-minute redeye to make it in time for our meeting this morning, but clearly you had other things in mind,” she said, her eyes flitting to my quickly-softening cock before turning again to leave.

“No, please, don’t go. This is completely unprofessional, I know—”

“That’s the understatement of the century.”

“But I promise, if you give me a chance, we can turn this meeting around.”

“Is it still a meeting when one person shows up with his dick out?”

“Oh, trust me, sweetheart, if my dick was out, you’d know it.”

“Sure, as long as I brought a magnifying glass with me.”

I paused, standing up a little straighter. She squared her shoulders, and our eyes locked, the tension between us thick enough to cut with a knife.

If we were going to make this work, I knew I had to be the one to budge. But dammit if this woman didn’t make me want to blow my lid.

“Look, I’m sorry. Please stay. If not for me, then for Luke and Charlotte.”

Valentina sighed and put a hand on her hip.

“Fine. Put some goddamn pants on first, and then we’ll talk.”

Hunky Heartbreaker by Kendall Ryan…ARC Review

Hunky Heartbreaker releases tomorrow, 11/27!

Synopsis:

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Kendall Ryan comes a new story in her Whiskey Kisses series…

Everything’s bigger in Texas.

And that includes Duke Wilder’s sexual appetite.

Together with his twin brother, he runs a whiskey distillery, and when their business takes off—suddenly he’s got it all. Success. Money. Family. But he doesn’t have a woman to share it with.

When Valentina storms into his life, her presence is only supposed to be temporary. She’s a feisty attorney hired to help clean up his company’s recent legal mess. He never counted on her being the one to turn his whole world upside down.

After spending most of his life living in the shadow of his brother, Duke has something to prove, and he’s not about to let this distraction get in the way of his plans, no matter how hot things get.

My Review:

Hunky Heartbreaker is the newest work from author Kendall Ryan and is the second to last release in the 2018 1,001 Dark Nights collection. I love these novellas because they always deliver a great story to spend a few hours with and this was no exception.  Sexy and sweet, I loved Hunky Heartbreaker!

When a sticky legal issue brings Duke and Valentina together, I knew from the very beginning these two would ignite the pages, and boy did they ever!  Duke is sexy and charming with a soft side I loved getting to see.  Valentina is sassy and no-nonsense and I adored her for giving Duke a run for his money.  Their banter an attraction was simply delicious and watching their relationship evolve was so much fun.

Whether you’re already a fan of Kendall Ryan, or this is your first taste, I know you’ll love Hunky Heartbreaker as much as I did!

Excerpt:

“Okay,” he said gently. “You’re convinced the blood was real?”

“You don’t believe me!” she said indignantly.

“No, I believe you. I just want you to think carefully. It is Halloween. You don’t think the young woman was in costume, or the blood might have been faked?” he asked.

The clerk was about twenty-four years old, tiny in height, dark-eyed and dark-haired, with a round, friendly face. Right now, however, her eyes were large, pupils dilated, and she appeared to be frightened.

“Mr. McFadden,” she said. “I’m telling you, I’ve worked here since I got out of high school. I…I know kids at Halloween—and adults at Halloween. This woman…she was crazed. I think she…that she—she ate someone, somewhere.”

“Ate them?” he asked carefully.

“Or drained them of blood. I could smell blood on her—it had that rusting tin kind of smell…”

He did know the smell. He might be a consultant at the moment, and not officially a Krewe agent yet, but he’d been military, he’d been a private eye—and, unfortunately, he’d already been on more than a few murder investigations.

“Oh, I don’t know—she ate someone—someone munched on her neck. There was just so much blood.”

“It could have been fake,” he said gently.

“Not unless she ordered some ‘Eau de Blood’ to go with it! I know costumes and makeup. We’re right by the theater, and,” she added dryly, “I have witnessed Halloween all my life. And at Halloween, there are always people running around in costume—and not just the players. But this…this was real blood.”

“All right, you said she was covered in blood. And it could have been hers. Could she have been hurt somehow?” Brodie asked. “Was there any kind of an injury you could see?”

“Oh, God!” the young clerk said. “I don’t know. Maybe. Maybe she was in real pain. But she was obnoxious—threatening. She wanted opioids. Yes, I mean, I guess that would mean she might be hurt. Her neck was all red—but the blood was all over the costume, too. At a distance, I thought maybe she was doing a just-enjoyed-dinner vampire or something. But when she got closer…there was that smell!”

“And when she got belligerent at the pharmacy counter, you heard her—and walked up and warned her you were going to call the police?” Brodie asked.

Rebecca nodded solemnly.

He glanced quickly at the notes on his cellphone. The woman was young, but as she said, she’d been there several years.  She was a clerk, and an assistant store manager, and she had called in the incident—which might have been a non-incident, not something that would normally involve the FBI.

Except Detective Angus Hilton of the D.C. police was close friends with Jackson Crow, head of the Krewe unit of the bureau. Since Brodie had just picked up Jackson to head to the theater—all who could were gathering for the last children’s and adult Halloween season shows—he had found himself investigating what might have been an addict’s attempt to fulfill a craving.

Halloween—like a full moon—brought out the crazies.

Excerpt:

Brody Chabot.

“Brooke?” A slow grin spreads over that sexy mouth, and I have to take a minute to just soak him in. He’s grown a couple more inches, making him ridiculously tall. His dark hair is cut short around his ears, and a little longer on top, stylishly messy.

He’s in cargo shorts and a polo shirt, due to it being the hottest day of the year so far out there.

“Hi, Brody,” I reply and swallow hard. “Thanks for meeting with me.”

“Hi, Brody,” Maisey says with a smile. “Welcome back.”

He blinks and nods, then tosses her a friendly smile. “Thanks. Good to see you.” He turns back to me as he tucks his sunglasses in his pocket. “I thought, since the space next door is empty, we could walk over there.”

I nod and tuck a piece of my hair behind my ear. “That works. Maisey, do you and Micah have this?”

 “Of course. Take your time.”

I send her a look that says thanks, but if I’m not back in an hour, come get me.

Brody leads the way and unlocks the glass door, then holds it open for me and waits for me to go ahead of him. He locks the door back up and follows me in.

The room is empty, aside from a glass countertop that used to display knick knacks. Brody walks behind it and leans on it casually, crosses his arms over his chest, and takes a moment to look me up and down, from my toes to my head.

“You still look sixteen,” he says quietly. Just like that, his voice does things to me. It’s deeper now, and his brown eyes aren’t the eyes of a boy anymore. He’s 100% pure sexy man, and I’m suddenly wishing I’d asked Maisey to attend this meeting with me.

“I don’t feel sixteen,” I reply with a small laugh and rest my hands on the countertop across from him. I’m only five-feet-two, so I have to look way up to meet his gaze. His eyes are guarded, but happy. I look at his left hand, and notice that he isn’t wearing a ring.

“You’re not wearing one either,” he says quietly.

 “No.”

He nods once. “I’m assuming you wanted to meet about the letter.”

“I do, yes. Brody, I need you to reconsider.”

His eyebrows climb in surprise. “Excuse me?”

“You heard me. I’d like you to reconsider selling the building. If you sell, and I have to relocate, I could very well go out of business, and this business is important, Brody.”

 “To you.”

 “To this community.”

EXCERPT:

Caroline walked down the hallway where doors opened into dressing rooms, storage, prop, and costume rooms. She had grown into one of the company’s stars and had her own dressing room near the stairs, allowing for quick costume changes when need be.

On the way, she noticed the prop room door was ajar. She paused to close it and was startled by a leering face. She laughed softy to herself because it was the mask used by the monster in the show. In this twist on the original story, the horror of the creature only showed at certain times. And when it did, there was no time to transform the actor on stage.

The mask, conceived to look like a death’s head, made its appearance in the second act. It was horrible, created as a skeletal face with narrow bones, huge black eyes and a gaping mouth that twisted into a leering scowl.

She’d seen the mask at dress rehearsal, but it was still a chilling sight. It was set atop a stand that had been draped with the monster’s cloak, and it appeared to be as real as possible—without an actor even wearing it.

“You scared me!” she told the mask.

And closed the door.

Despite the lack of light here now, it was easy enough to feel her way to her dressing table in her small—but oh, so special and appreciated—dressing room. And even to find her little bag. She knew exactly where she’d left it. She grabbed her reticule, hurried out and paused—the prop room door was ajar again. The leering death’s head was sticking out at an odd angle.

Something had to be wrong with the way the thing had been set.

Sighing, she started to walk back to the room and see what the difficulty could be.

The face on the thing was cruel and menacing.

“Quite frightening,” she told the piece, approaching it.

“Caroline.”

She froze. It had seemed to say her name. Fear spread through her with a vengeance.

It would have to remain as it was, she decided. She was not staying a minute longer and Judson was right upstairs.

She turned to walk away and wound up running.

But as she reached the stairs and started up them, she knew that someone or something was behind her. She turned, compelled by some unknown force.

And she was stunned to see that the thing, the horrible mask, worn by someone who had also donned the cloak, was there before her.

She started to let out a scream.

It never left her lips. The thing came after her, seeming to float up the stairs, black cloaked arms flying…

Encompassing her and whispering before she could scream.

“The theater is mine, don’t you understand? The theater will always be mine.”

Its arms tightened as she choked out a dying, muted cry for help.

But she was silenced.

Forever.
