By Gillian Archer

On Sale January 16th | Ballantine/Loveswept

Officially, the world knows me as His Royal Highness Prince Lucien of Monaco, but you can call me Luc. A long time ago, I vowed never to let my heritage stand in the way of a good time. Now the party’s over.

With the death of my father and my twin brother, I’ve lost a part of my soul—and my freedom. My heartless older brother tells me that not only do I have to settle down, I need to marry a girl with the right bloodlines. AKA, a princess. Yeah, I’ll get right on that . . . after one last trip to Vegas.

That’s where I meet Hannah. Not only is she gorgeous and down-to-earth, she reminds me what it’s like to live completely in the moment. Plus she has no idea who I really am. Hanging out with the locals, I feel like I can just be myself again. Besides, our chemistry is undeniable—especially after we take things to the next level.

What happens in Vegas is special, and I don’t want it to stay there. But I’ve been keeping a secret that will tear us apart. The last thing I expect, though? Hannah’s been keeping a secret of her own . . . one that might just bring us together.

Reluctantly Royal By Gillian Archer

Excerpt

With a song like “Sexyback” playing, I thought we’d be grinding against each other, all full of sexual tension and steps away from going home together.

Not so much.

Hannah bounced around the small dance floor with her hands over her head, apparently without a care in the world. It felt like the entire bar was watching us, but Hannah didn’t seem to notice. She bounced and gyrated and yelled the lyrics along with the tone-deaf singer on stage. She was pure joy and didn’t appear to have a single worry. It was intoxicating and impossible to ignore.

Not that Hannah would let me just stand there and watch her dance.

On her second trip bopping around the dance floor, she grabbed my hand and pulled me into her insanity. In seconds I was laughing, gyrating alongside her. Dancing like this was so far outside my comfort level, but I don’t think I’d ever enjoyed myself so much in my life.

All too soon the song ended, and I found myself breathing a bit harder than before and staring into her hazel eyes. “That was . . . fun.”

“You’ve got some moves. I wasn’t sure at first—you were just standing there like a bump on a log. But once you loosened up—”

Whatever she was going to say next was cut off as the karaoke host took over the mic. “That’s it for me. Thanks for partying with me tonight. I’m gonna leave you with the sultry sounds of Beyoncé’s “Naughty Girl” as I pack up, and then it’s the digital jukebox after that. Night, all!”

The guy had the balls to wink at me as the music started.

Hannah burst out laughing. “I think he’s playing my song.”

“It would be rude to disappoint him.”

She lifted her hands over her head again and started to do this hip-shake thing that immediately got my dick hard.

I shook my head and grabbed her hand to pull her to me. “This time we’re dancing my way.”

Hannah laughed as she fell into my arms, but she didn’t complain or protest. No, she did that hip-shaking thing against my body. I groaned and ground my hard dick into her soft belly. Hannah made a soft keening sound, then burrowed her head into my chest.

“Not so funny now,” she murmured.

I hummed in reply as I tried to get my dick under control. But it was no use; Hannah was just too fucking hot in my arms. Instead I brushed the hair off her face. Merde, she was gorgeous.

She looked up at me with a question in her eyes.

So I answered it by ducking my head and covering her lips with mine. Her body went rigid for a second, then melted in my arms as my lips coaxed a response from her. Then it was she who was the aggressor. She buried a hand in my hair and held me firmly against her. My scalp tinged with pain, and I’d be damned if I’d let her take the lead either on the dance floor or with our sexual chemistry. My tongue probed the seam of her lips until she opened her mouth to me. I quickly lead her in a parry and thrust motion that I couldn’t wait to repeat with other parts of our anatomy later.

. . . Or now, but for the fact that we had an audience.

It was that last thought, combined with the faint roaring of a crowd, that drew me out of our hormone-induced fog. And I became aware of the fact that the Beyoncé song was over and a rowdy crowd of soldiers at a table near us were cheering on our floor show.

Hannah registered our audience a second later than I and pulled away, ending our kiss. She buried her face in my chest, her shoulders shaking. I had a second to wonder how I was going to calm her down when I realized she wasn’t crying.

She was laughing.

After a beat Hannah stepped away from me, turned, and dropped into a theatrical curtsy to the whooping table of soldiers.

I shook my head and laughed. My eyes met Nicolas’s across the room; despite the distance, I could read the disapproval in his expression. My chief bodyguard wasn’t as capable as Dimitri at hiding his expressions.

Not that I gave a fuck.

I turned to the soldiers’ table and did a little bow of my own, then grabbed Hannah’s hand and pulled her to me just as a new-to-me slow techno song started to play.

This time Hannah let me lead her as we swayed on the dance floor. She looked up at me with laughing eyes. “I kinda forgot where we were for a second. Good thing we really didn’t give them a floor show.”

“What was it you said to me a few minutes ago? Wh—”

“Wanna get your sexy on?” Hannah interjected.

“No.” I laughed. “But I guess that works, too. I was thinking when you asked me: ‘Who said tonight was over?’”

“Hmmmm.” Hannah smiled up at me. “Well, one, I don’t do public displays of affection. Usually. And two, I never have sex on the first date.”

“Wait, that’s a lot for me to process in my second language. You’re considering this a first date?”

“Maybe. I guess we’ll have to see how it goes. It could be our first date. Could be our last date.”

“No pressure.”

“Exactly. Just so you know, I’m grading your every move.”

Christ, she was hot. And challenging. And complex. Somehow I didn’t think I’d be able to figure her out in just one week. A girl like her would take time. Time I sadly didn’t have.

Fake Wife by Stacey Lynn..Excerpt Reveal

Synopsis

This marriage is strictly business… until the temptation gets way too real.

Corbin: I loved my grandma, but I don’t need her money. All I care about is keeping the house—the only place that’s ever felt like home. That, and screwing over my dad, who wants to turn the property into a mall. There’s only one catch: To receive my inheritance, I have to get married within six months. Me, the guy who’s never dated a girl for more than six minutes. Now I need to find a woman I can trust. So when I’m rear-ended by a Prius, I figure it’s a sign that I’m supposed to meet gorgeous, down-to-earth Teagan Monroe.

Teagan: First I lose my job. Then I come home and find out—in the most graphic way possible . . . yeah, that way—that my boyfriend is a cheating jerk. And then I speed off and nearly kill Portland’s sexiest bachelor. Corbin Lane should be pissed. Instead, he offers me more money than I’ve ever seen in my life to marry him and live together in a mansion for two years. No sex. No feelings. Just cash—enough to make all my dreams come true. Then we go and break all our rules . . . and I realize I’m falling in love with my fake fiancé.

Excerpt

“We’re going to be married, Teagan. Don’t you think it is your business to know what your future husband is doing, and where he is?”

She has a small carrot halfway to her mouth and freezes, looking up at me through her lashes at my words.

“We’re . . . we’re not . . . it’s different for us.”

“Is it?”

A blush heats her cheek, turns brighter than the peach-colored top she has on. And when she bends over, I see a hint of a matching colored bra.

Fucking hell. I want to tear her clothes off, throw her on the counter, and fuck her until she’s screaming her head off, and she’s casually chomping on fresh veggies.

Christ.

“Teagan,” I say, my voice commanding. “Are you telling me you don’t care what I do? Where I go? Who I’m with?”

I’m prodding. Bordering on turning into the asshole she’s seen too many times, something truly uncharacteristic of me, but damn if I don’t want a reaction from her. And I do. Her jaw clenches and her shoulders pull tight.

She bites a carrot, chewing it like it’s hard as nails. “What do you want me to say?”

“I want you to ask me. I want you to be curious. That yeah, you want to know where I am when I’m not with you.”

I want you to care about me.

The reality slams into me, making my chest burn. I do. I want her to give a shit about me for more than a monthly allowance and an easy couple of years to start her own business.

I want her to want me more.

“Okay. So what kind of work do you do out at Cannon Bluffs?”

“You know that bed in your room there?”

“Yeah.”

“I built it. Started a company a couple years ago, been slowly refining the craft, growing local customers. Trying to expand it regionally.”

She freezes, a soft look passes over her features, and her gaze moves to my living room before slowly coming back to me.

“You make . . . furniture?”

God. Why does her approval mean so damn much to me? And yet the fear of not getting it holds me back.

“Have to do something other than be a playboy trust fund baby.”

“Don’t do that,” she says, shaking her head. “Don’t talk about yourself like you have nothing to offer anyone. You’ve helped me, given me a place to stay when I needed it, and you have really good friends who care about you. Plus, Caitlin told me you helped her.”

“It’s easy to help people when you have money.”

“Maybe.” She steps forward, hesitant little steps, and a pink spreads from her cheeks down her neck. God she’s pretty. If my plan was to find a normal girl to marry, I failed hugely. There’s nothing normal about Teagan. Her hand presses against my chest, a barely there glimpse of a touch, and before she can pull back, I grip her hand and hold it against my chest.

“Teagan—”

“It might be easy to help people if you have more money than God, Corbin, but you also have to have a heart.”

She’s making me lose it. The feel of her hand sears my chest like a branding iron and I want that . . . to be branded by her. Perhaps if I hold her hand to me forever, I’ll become the guy she thinks she sees.

A groan builds in my throat, the tension between us crackling, spreading, swirling around us, pulling us together, and I can’t help myself.

She’s all I have thought about for a week, all I’ve craved since I moved her in here.

I don’t want to think about contracts and pretending. I want to truly see what we can have.

I try to make a quiet entrance and make my way to my desk without anyone noticing Milo, but apparently my dog has other plans. He barks as soon as his beady little eyes focuses on a stranger and everyone looks over to me.

“Oh my goodness, a puppy!” Shayla squeals as she jumps from her chair and dashes over to me. “It’s so precious!”

“Can I hold it?” Carrie Jo asks, holding her hands out. I place Milo in her arms and watch as he licks her face and barks, his tiny tail wagging. “I wish I could take this cute little thing home with me! What’s its name?”

“His name is Milo,” I say as Carrie Jo passes him to Shayla. Leo and Caesar walk over.

“What’s all the fuss—OH SWEET JESUS, IT’S A PUPPY! I NEED THE PUPPY!” Leo exclaims and nearly snatches Milo from Shayla.

“Hey! I wasn’t done cuddling him!” she complains. Leo holds Milo close to his chest and scratches him behind the ears.

“Isn’t he the cutest little thing!” he says. “If I had a dog this small, I would dress it in the cutest little doggy fashion. He would be the most fashionable dog on the block.”

“I’m sure,” I say and giggle.

A throat clears behind us. “Why is everyone standing in the middle of the floor and not preparing for work?” Free Willy barks. I roll my eyes. It seems like baby Jesus is taking a little longer than I’d like in making her fall in to a sewer drain and disappearing.

Milo barks and growls, squirming in Leo’s arms. I take him back and scratch him behind the ears to calm him as Madicunt walks over to us. I know, Milo. I don’t like her either, the cunt.

“You brought a dog here?” she asks. I fight the urge to roll my eyes again. Well, yes, Captain Obvious. I think the furry animal in my arms would classify as a dog. When I don’t answer, she scoffs. “Last I checked, this isn’t a doggy daycare.”

And last time I checked, this isn’t SeaWorld, yet here she is.

“I have Gary’s permission and that’s the only person’s opinion I care about in regards to my dog,” I answer.

“He’s cute and all, but why is he here?” Caesar asks, scratching under Milo’s neck.

“Yeah, Blake, why is he here?” Madicunt repeats, standing next to Shayla and folding her arms across her chest. I almost want to slap the smirk that’s settled on her lips, but I have something that’ll do the trick.

“Well if you must know, Silas and I have something to work on this evening and there’s no telling when I’ll get back home,” I say, gauging Madame Cunt’s face. “I don’t want to leave my helpless little puppy all alone for hours when I could be gone all night. What kind of puppy mom would I be to do such a thing?”

“A project, eh?” Caesar asks and chuckles. “Is that what you kids are calling dates now?”

Before I could answer, Gary walks into the work space and claps his hand. “Okay, guys, everyone get to work,” he says and points to me. “I told you not to let that puppy be a distraction.”

“He won’t be. I promise!” I say and scurry to my desk.

Madicunt stomps off to her desk and glares at me from across the room. I bet that pea-sized brain of hers is probably churning with all kinds of thoughts as she tries to figure out what Silas and I are going to be doing. Wouldn’t be surprised if she even questions him about it. She’s such a nark.

The Spring Girls by Anna Todd…Release Blitz with Review

SBPRBanner-TSG-RB

The Spring Girls by Anna Todd
Release Date: January 2nd, 2018
Genre: Contemporary Romance

the spring girls cover

Four sisters desperately seeking the blueprints to life—the modern-day retelling of Louise May Alcott’s Little Women like only Anna Todd (After, Imagines) could do.

The Spring Girls—Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy—are a force of nature on the New Orleans military base where they live. As different as they are, with their father on tour in Iraq and their mother hiding something, their fears are very much the same. Struggling to build lives they can be proud of and that will lift them out of their humble station in life, one year will determine all that their futures can become.

The oldest, Meg, will be an officer’s wife and enter military society like so many of the women she admires. If her passion—and her reputation—don’t derail her.

Beth, the workhorse of the family, is afraid to leave the house, is afraid she’ll never figure out who she really is.

Jo just wants out. Wishing she could skip to graduation, she dreams of a life in New York City and a career in journalism where she can impact the world. Nothing can stop her—not even love.

And Amy, the youngest, is watching all her sisters, learning from how they handle themselves. For better or worse.

With plenty of sass, romance, and drama, The Spring Girls revisits Louisa May Alcott’s classic Little Women, and brings its themes of love, war, class, adolescence, and family into the language of the twenty-first century.

Hands down a must read for anyone that loved the original Little Women! Anna Todd did a fantastic job taking the four sisters (Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy) and relating them to our new age world. Living on a military base in New Orleans, the story is written to follow each girl lives. Anna gives each girl at least one chapter in their point of view, which really helps a reader connect to each woman.

I also love this book is not exactly “happy” but really a drama. I felt each woman’s ups as well as their downs. In fact, it was refreshing to read since much of what I read are contemporary romance novels. I would recommend this for anyone who loved the classic as well as anyone who wants a heartfelt drama.

ONE
Declan
“Fuck!” Another roar rushed past my lips. “Doesn’t anyone work around here?” I pressed the towel tighter against my thumb, desperate to quell the throbbing. “Got time enough to put up these stupid-ass decorations, but no time for a bleeding man. Great emergency room response here. I’ll be sure to tell all my friends—”
“Hello, Mr. Callaghan, is it?” The curtain pulled away, revealing long, blond waves and a pair of iced-over blue eyes, trained directly on me. “So you’re the guy who’s been moaning like a dying cow back here.”
Both my eyebrows shot up, the incessant throb in my mangled thumb increasing another notch. “Pounding a nail through your thumb will do that, I guess.”
For the first time, my eyes dipped down her neck, over the soft swell of ample tits, a curvy little waist, and hips that looked perfect for digging my hands into when I—
“Can I get a look at the damage?” She stepped closer, eyes zeroing in on my aching hand.
This woman had more curves than a country road. Suddenly, the throb in my hand wasn’t as persistent as the throb in my dick.
I sucked in a quick breath when she slowly unwound the white towel, stained with dark slashes of red.
My blood.
Oh, shit.
My head swam as she discarded the towel and leaned in for a closer look. “That’s gonna need stitches.”
“You don’t say,” I blurted before I could put a lid on my mouth.
“You always such an asshole to people tryin’ to help you?” She shot me a glare.
“Well, I nearly bled out on the table waiting for ya. Isn’t the customer always right or some bullshit?”
She narrowed her eyes, the faintest hint of a grin turning up one side of her lips. “That’s in retail, so, no, that’s not a rule the emergency room subscribes to. Actually, we prioritize patients, and the elderly gentleman in cardiac arrest trumped you.” Her eyes were on mine again, mesmerizing in their depths. “And according to your intake paperwork, you’ve been here about four minutes, so I don’t think that constitutes bleeding out.” She took hold of my thumb to wrap it with a roll of gauze. “Are you always so dramatic?”
I shot her a cocky grin. “You’ve got a winning bedside manner—” my eyes shot to the name tag on her chest “—Dr. Snow.”
A soft grin ticked across her face at my words before she took a step back, cocking her head to the side. “My patients call me Dr. Aurora, and since it looks like I’m stuck with you for at least the next few hours, you’re welcome to as well.”
“No shit?” I settled a little deeper into the cot underneath me.
“No shit, what?” She pressed the clipboard to her tits, eyes holding mine.
“Your name is really Aurora Snow?” I didn’t believe it. I’d never met anyone with a name like that.
“Yup.” She began wrapping a blood pressure cuff around my bicep.
“Anyone ever tell you you look like that Disney ice queen? Ya know, the blond hair, the blue eyes?”
A soft huff pushed past pretty pink lips, and my heart nearly shattered like a fallen icicle. “The mean one? Nothing I haven’t heard before.”
She stood close as she waited for the machine to stop its incessant buzzing. I sucked in a quick whiff of her scent. Sweet, warm, like cinnamon hot chocolate on a winter day, she soothed my mind and made me hungry for something, way down deep.
I’d never met anyone like Dr. Aurora Snow.
“So how long am I gonna be holed up here with your sparkling personality?” I couldn’t help the dig. Something about the way she could take my sharp tongue drew me to her, made me want to demonstrate all the other things I could do with that tongue. The waves of pleasure cascading through her while she called my name at the top of her lungs.
“I’m off at eleven Nurse Harriet will be in after that—”
“Eleven?” I glanced at the clock hanging above the door. “It’s already nine.”
“Indeed, it is.” Her eyes glistened as they lit on mine. “Mind if I ask how it was you drove a nail into your thumb this time of night?”
I shoved my uninjured hand through my hair, thinking back on the hellish day I’d had. “Been on the worksite since six this morning, trying to get it finished before the holiday.”
“So you were at work?” She unwrapped the cuff on my bicep and set it aside.
I shook my head again, wishing to hell it was that easy. “Nope, left a little after eight and went straight to Mama’s house to hang up Christmas lights.”
A soft chuckle filled my ears. “You put a nail through your thumb hanging Christmas lights for your mom?”
“Seems so,” I grumbled.
“How sweet.” Her lips teased up in a smile. “Didn’t peg you for the festive type.”
I shrugged. “I’m not. I fucking hate the holidays, but hell if I can say no to Mama.”
“Well, you probably should have waited until daylight…also maybe on a day you didn’t work fourteen hours. You shouldn’t be so careless.”
“I know what I’m doing. I don’t need any advice from an—” Her eyes darted up, waiting on my next word. “Ice queen.” I winked at her.
She tried to stifle a smile behind her hand, but she failed, her cheeks pinking up the prettiest shade of red I’d ever seen.
A vision came to me of her spread underneath me, all that golden hair fisted in my hands, those lips attached to mine, and stealing all the air from her lungs.
“You work tomorrow night?” I asked, no longer giving a fuck if I ever got a stitch. My thumb could fall off for that matter, and as long as Dr. Aurora was in the room, I’d be just fine.
“That’s a probing question.” She averted her eyes as she tried to act busy. She wasn’t busy, just trying to hide her reaction to me. The way her thighs were shifting back and forth, how her gaze kept landing on my eyes, and everything in her expression again told me I was right.
“I can get a lot more probing than that.” I cocked a sideways smile.
“Are you always such a wiseass?”
“Just wondering what poor bastard is gonna be graced with your lovely personality next.”
“You’re a real…” She shook her head, no longer able to stifle her laugh.
“Bastard?”
“Cocky bastard,” she added, pushing that clipboard against her tits again before stepping away.
Hell, I wasn’t ready for her to leave yet. My stubborn ass began conjuring ways to keep her here. I didn’t give a fuck if she had a job to do. I wanted to be the center of her universe.
Aurora Snow might be walking away now, but not for long. Not if I had anything to do with it.

The front door slammed, shaking the walls in our small apartment. I snuggled closer to Anna’s side and buried my face in her hair.

Logan’s agitated voice cut through the fog of near sleep.

“Dude, wake up!”

Whatever mess my best friend had gotten himself into, he’d have to solve it on his own. This was one of Anna’s rare mornings off, and since we’d had the apartment to ourselves, we’d stayed up late, listening to the rain and having lazy sex until we’d passed out.

Smiling at the thought of a repeat, I grumbled in Logan’s general direction, “Go away. I don’t have any condoms. Carry your ass to the store like a normal person and leave us alone.”

His footsteps echoed in the tiny room, and then he was beside me, his long fingers digging into my shoulder as he gave me a hard shake. “I’m serious. Get up.”

Not happening.

A frustrated groan escaped my lips when Anna twisted in my arms. She propped herself up on one elbow, wiping the sleep from her eyes. “What do you need, Lo?”

A swift kick in the ass.

Rolling onto my back, I smothered my face with the pillow, hoping he’d get the hint. Of course, he didn’t.

Cursing under his breath, Logan rooted around under the comforter.

“Hey!” I snarled, tossing the pillow at him. “Whatever you’re looking for, I don’t have it.”

Running an agitated hand through his blond hair, Logan glared at me.

“Where’s your remote?” Anxiety laced his tone when I didn’t answer right away. “For the TV, douchebag—where’s the remote?”

Anna fumbled around on the nightstand and then handed him the clunky device. “What’s wrong with the TV in your room?”

Logan walked to the end of the bed and took a seat.

Anna sat up, scowling. “Make it quick.” She slumped against the headboard, glaring at the back of Logan’s head. “Seriously, Lo, hurry up. I have to pee.”

Logan ignored her, all his attention focused on the screen as he flipped through the channels. His shoulders sagged when he reached CNN.

Cable News? Now he had my attention. The only things Logan ever watched were MTV, VH1, or the Cartoon Network.

I popped up to see what was so important, but something told me I didn’t want to know. “What’s going on?”

“Quiet,” Logan whispered.

Buttoning my lip, I reluctantly focused on the screen where a stone-faced commentator stood in a field, fat droplets of rain pelting her microphone.

“. . . live footage from the scene of the tragic accident outside of Fredericksburg, Texas this morning where two members of the super-group Damaged lost their lives in a fiery crash. At this point, we’re unable to confirm the identities of the deceased. Damaged, arguably the hottest band in the country, just completed a series of shows in the Southwest and . . .”

The camera panned out for a wide-angle shot. Wisps of smoke rose from the wreckage, dissolving into the gray morning sky.

A gasp from Anna. “Oh my God.”

She crumbled against me, her small hand curving around my waist as she buried her face in my chest. Unable to make sense of what I was seeing, I stroked her hair with numb fingers.

After a few moments of stunned silence, Logan jumped to his feet. “What the fuck is she smiling about?”

Confused, I blinked at him. “Who?”

“The fucking reporter.” He pointed at the TV with a shaky hand. “What the hell is she grinning for?”

I shifted my gaze back to the screen, and sure as shit, the reporter was smiling. Just a slight upturn of her glossy lips.

I tightened my grip on my girl. “It’s her job, man. She doesn’t . . .” Emotion clogged my throat, and I struggled for breath. For words. “She doesn’t know them.”

But then, neither did we. Not really. Damaged hailed from Austin, our hometown. And over the last five years, as their star ascended, our paths had crossed on occasion.

Our band, Caged, was one of the many groups on Sixth Street that loosely followed the Damaged blueprint. Since high school, we’d been playing the same bars where Damaged got their start, hoping a little of their magic would rub off.

The news report abruptly cut to KVUE, the local ABC affiliate. Terri Gruca, the nighttime anchor, sat stoically behind the half-lit desk, her co-anchor nowhere in sight.

“Thank you, Sandy.” Terri blinked into the camera. “We’ve just got word at the studio that Rhenn Grayson, lead singer for the Grammy winning band Damaged, and Paige Dawson, lead guitarist, were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident on Highway 290 this morning.” She looked down at the copy wobbling in her shaking hand. “Rhenn’s wife, singer Tori Grayson, and drummer, Miles Cooper, were airlifted to Brackenridge Hospital via Care Flight. According to band manager, Taryn Ayers, Mrs. Grayson and Mr. Cooper are both in critical condition. The bus driver was also pronounced dead at the crash site.” Still photos of Rhenn and Paige appeared on a split screen in the background behind Terri’s head. “Our prayers go out to the families. After a brief commercial break, we’ll cut to the CNN studio for further updates on this tragedy and a look back at the lives of these two gifted musicians.”

My head pounded as a commercial for toaster strudel flickered across the screen. Smiling faces and cheery voices, touting the virtue of strawberry jam tucked inside a fluffy pastry shell. Somewhere, people were probably eating that shit.

But not Rhenn or Paige.

“They were twenty-four years old,” Logan murmured.

As he turned to face me, questions clouded his arctic blue eyes. The same questions I’d seen every day since the first time we met. About death, and why it visited some while leaving others alone. Death was what brought Logan and me together, after all. Our shared bond. Two kids whose mothers would never sit at the long table in Mrs. Varner’s classroom handing out cookies. Because our mothers had “passed.”

That’s the polite term people used when someone died. The same folks made sure to tell you they were “sorry for your loss.”

Which I always found funny, since my mother wasn’t lost. She was dead.

Rhenn’s voice boomed from the speaker on the worn-out TV. Smiling his most iconic smile, he stood back to back with Paige as he crooned the band’s latest hit.

I leaned forward to drink it all in. Because that’s all that was left now, bits of light and shadow caught on tape.

Slithering from my loose hold, Anna stumbled to her feet. “I’ve got to pee.”

Before she got away, I swung my legs over the side of the bed and then slipped my arms around her waist to pull her between my knees.

Resting my forehead against her chest, I breathed deeply, her peach scent soothing me like a balm. “I love you, Anna-baby.”

She sifted her fingers through my hair until I stopped shaking, and then kissed the top of my head. “Love you too.”

Reluctantly, I let her go, and she retreated into the tiny bathroom. Through the paper-thin walls, I heard her crying softly.

When she returned, her face splotchy and her eyes glistening with leftover tears, I gave her a soft smile and lifted the covers so she could crawl in beside me.

An hour later and we still hadn’t moved, like if we stayed here, it wouldn’t be real.

But it was.

When they showed the Care Flight helicopter on the roof of Brackenridge Hospital for the second time, I snapped. “Change that, will you?”

Logan flipped the channel to MTV while I reached for the pad of paper I kept beside the bed to jot down lyrics.

Like everyone else, the music channel was covering the Damaged story. But instead of reporting what everyone already knew, they were running a special broadcast about the three lesser-known bands that had followed Damaged up the ladder.

A solemn voice spoke over a montage of snippets flickering on the screen.

“While it stands to reason that Leveraged, Revenge Theory, or Drafthouse will fill the gaping hole left by today’s tragic event, a few lesser-known groups from Austin have amassed quite a following.”

Jolted by the familiar beat, my gaze snapped to the television where footage of Caged performing at the Parish flashed on the set.

“One such group, Caged, is currently playing the same venue where Damaged got their start some five years ago.”

The camera panned to the front of my drum kit where the band’s logo, a lion inside a gilded cage, shimmered under the lights.

“Like many of the smaller Sixth Street bands, Caged is still fighting for notoriety outside this small, but illustrious, stretch of road.”

“Oh my God,” Anna whispered, squeezing my hand. “That’s you.”

Guilt flooded my insides, sweeping away the momentary jubilation.

They’re dead, I reminded myself, turning my attention back to my lyrics.

Voices dying on the breeze, eyes now see what no one sees.

Will you be among the masses, forever frozen as time passes?

As I pondered the morbid compilation, the incessant ringing roused me from my next thought.

“Answer that call, dude,” I grumbled to Logan’s back.

He glanced down at his hand as if he just realized he was holding the phone. Swiping a finger over the screen, he took a deep breath before lifting the device to his ear.

“Hey, Chase.” Logan pushed to his feet and began to pace in a tight circle, glancing at the television every few seconds. “Of course I heard.” Stopping in his tracks, he listened intently. “Tonight?” He glanced at me, brows drawn together over troubled blue eyes. “I don’t know. Let me talk to Sean first.”

Tossing the phone on the bed, Logan dropped his head back and stared at the ceiling. “That was Chase. He wants us to do a set tonight.”

My stomach twisted as the shock rolled through me. “Why tonight?”

Logan’s eyes met mine, conflicted. “There’s going to be some kind of candlelight vigil.” He cleared his throat. “They’re expecting music, so someone’s got to take the stage.”

Might as well be us.

Distance from where he worked. Distance from him, his body, and his soul-searing eyes.

But the more I stayed away, the more our lives merged. Now my life—my normal—is unraveled. My heart, my hope, my new future all in the hands of a tall, tatted bartender.

I planned my forever with the perfect man. But sometimes the heart wants more than stability, more than security, more than what others want for you. One thing’s for sure—destiny can’t be planned.

Oh man, oh man! Let me tell you all what a hot and sexy romance this is! Cade Ryder is everything and more! Tattoos- check, hot-check, goes after what he wants-check, loves hard-check, and above all-down right sweet-check!!!!! I don’t want to forget about Angelica. If there is ever a girl you want to pick a better man for her-she is the one. Angelica is in a relationship that has gone stale and she is fighting to try to make it better. This is an example of how Mia Kayla takes a character and makes them so relatable. It is a love that a lot of us have experienced. The kind of love where you love a person but are not in love with them any longer. I love that Angelica takes control of her own life and goes for what she wants. That want my friends is Mr. Cade Ryder. These two together are amazing and sexy!!!! You will find yourself routing for them from the beginning.

I highly recommend this book. If you love romance stories with a happy ending but you are just not sure how a character will get theirs- this is the book for you! In fact, I love that it is part one in a series, The Ryder Boys, because the end left me wanting more of this couple and their family! Just amazing and beautiful to read!

“Would you like to dance?” He gestured toward the wide spot of linoleum in front of the piano.

Dancing with Clint meant having his arms around me, feeling his breath on my cheek. I wanted to jump up and accept his offer. I looked around and no one else was dancing. He was standing there with his tattoos showing and his leather vest, a real tough guy—he couldn’t really want to dance with me in the middle of the senior community center.

I laughed. “You’re joking, right?”

“Uh, no. I wasn’t joking.” Clint shrugged and grabbed a newspaper off the rack next to me. He sat back down. “I just thought it might be fun, something different.”

Oh shit. He really did want to dance and I had totally blown it. He opened the paper to the sports page and then skipped to the local section. I’d hurt his feelings because I was afraid to take a chance. What could I say to make this better?

“I’ll dance with you, young man.” The woman in her seventies got up and held her hand out to Clint. “My name is Alma, and I know what to do when a handsome man asks you to dance. You say yes.”

Clint was caught. He looked from Alma and then back to me, unsure of what to say.

“All right.” He got to his feet. “Foxtrot?”

Excerpt:

J.C. looked incredibly handsome in a shepherd’s coat, jeans and boots, with snow dusting his thick, black, uncovered hair.
“You never wear a hat,” Colie mused, trying not to let her hands tremble as she took the coat to hang up for him. He was so tall that she had to stand on her tiptoes to pull it back off his shoulders.
“I hate hats,” he remarked. He glanced at her as she put the coat on the rack in the hall, his pale gray eyes narrow and appraising on her slender, sexy body. She dressed like a lady, but he knew all about women who put on their best behavior around company. She was just out of school; college, he was certain, because she had to be at least twenty-two or twenty-three. Catelow had several thousand people, and J.C. didn’t mix with them. He only knew what Rodney told him about his sister. And that wasn’t much.
“I noticed,” Colie said as she turned, smiling.
His eyes flickered down to her pert breasts and he fought down a raging hunger that he hadn’t felt in a long time. He had women, but this one stirred him in a different way. He couldn’t explain how, exactly. It irritated him and he scowled.
“It wasn’t a complaint,” Colie added quickly, not understanding the scowl.
He shrugged. “No problem. What are we eating?”
“Leftover turkey with cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, salad and apple pie.” She hesitated, insecure. “Is that okay?”
He smiled, his perfect white teeth visible under chiseled, sensuous lips. “It’s great. I love turkey.” He chuckled. “I like chicken, too, although I usually get mine in a bucket.”
Her eyes widened. “You put it in a pail, like you milk cows with?” she asked, shocked.
He glowered at her. “There’s this chicken place. They sell you chicken and biscuits and sides…”
She went red as fire. “Oh, gosh, sorry, wasn’t thinking,” she stammered. “Let’s go in! Daddy’s already at the table.”
Rodney went ahead, but J.C. slid a long finger inside the back of Colie’s sweater and gently stopped her. He moved forward, so that she could feel the heat and power of him at her back in a way that made her heart run wild, her knees shiver. “I was teasing,” he whispered right next to her ear. His lips brushed it.
Her intake of breath was visible. Her whole body felt shaky.
His big hands caught her shoulders and held her there while his lips traveled down the side of her throat in a lazy, whispery caress that caused her to melt inside.
“Do you like movies?” he whispered.
“Well, yes…”
“There’s a new comedy at the theater Saturday. Go with me. We’ll have supper at the fish place on the way.”
She turned, shocked. “You…you want to go out with me?” she asked, her green eyes wide and full of delight.
He smiled slowly. “Yes. I want to go out with you.”
“Saturday?”
He nodded.
“What time?”
“We’ll leave about five.”
“That would be lovely,” she said, drowning in his eyes, on fire with the joy he’d just kindled in her with the unexpected invitation.
“Lovely,” he murmured, but he was looking at her mouth.
