John O’Malley’s sister is missing. All the clues of her disappearance lead to Hayward County, Wisconsin and the crooks and questionable sheriff that reside there. Pretending to be one of them, John takes a job as bodyguard for the sheriff’s beautiful sister, Grace. It seems like the perfect way to investigate their crimes and corruption, but when someone threatens to kill Grace, the job proves harder than he thought. Is she an innocent witness to a crime, or just as guilty as everyone else?

Grace Sullivan just wanted a normal life: find a good man, get married and have a family. She has had enough of looking the other way while her brother hides behind his sheriff’s badge to conduct shady dealings. Hiring a gangster named John to watch her is the final straw. When a face from the past threatens her life, she is forced to put her life in John’s hands, but as time goes on, all she really wants is to be in the gangster’s arms.

Excerpt

“Grace, I have the seeds in that you ordered. Unfortunately, the fabric is not here yet.” The shopkeeper rattled on and on, but Grace kept her gaze on the young man by the car.
“Mrs. Kallstrom, do you know who that fella is? The one who’s fiddling with my brother’s car?” The older Norwegian woman waddled down the store aisle. She pushed her glasses up her nose and peered out the shop window.
“No. Afraid not. Could be one of those men from Illinois?” Her accent made it sound like ill-a-noise-ah. “Don’t know what this world is coming to. Gangsters in Hayward County.” She made the sign of the cross and walked to the candy counter.
“I’ll be just a minute,” Grace called, as she walked out the door. An overhead bell jingled as she passed. “Boy! Get away from that car.” She hurried down the wooden steps. Her heels clicked on the wood sidewalk as she rushed to Daniel’s vehicle.
He stood. His height now blocked the sun and shadowed his face. This was no boy. She had to look up to see his face. Grace cupped her hand to her forehead in hopes of seeing him better. His eyes were hazel. His jaw was clean-shaven, but already forming a shadow of whiskers. A straight nose and full lips accented his handsome face. The man was dressed cleanly and neatly in a blue shirt with white stripes, a navy tie, and reddish brown vest and trousers. A matching suit coat lay carefully folded on the wheel of the car.
“I, uh, I beg your pardon, sir.” Grace swallowed as her eyes fell to watch him slowly rub his hands on a clean rag. Not one to be lost for words, she struggled to find her next one. Her heart fluttered faster and her palms started to sweat.
“John, I see you’ve met my lovely sister.” Her brother grabbed John’s shoulder from behind. “Ain’t she a beauty?” John nodded in greeting, but remained silent. “Grace, this here is John. I’ve hired him to help around here and the homestead. He’s a wiz with cars too.” John continued to stare at her as Daniel introduced them.
“Well then, I’ll leave you two to finish whatever you were doing and I’ll continue with my purchases. I will see you at dinner time.” It was rude, but she couldn’t help it. John was the second man to unnerve her in less than twenty-four hours, and she hoped the pattern would not continue. Her stride brought her quickly to the store and she slammed the door. The bell clanged.
“Ah, there you are. Is there something else I can help you with today, yah?” Mrs. Kallstrom always seemed to answer all her own questions with an affirmative.
“Yah,” Grace shook her head, “I mean, no. That will be all, please.” Why the young man unsettled her, she did not know. He didn’t seem dangerous, but he troubled her nonetheless. She unclenched her fists and reached for her coin purse.
Payment paid in full, Grace gathered her purchases and placed them in a basket. “Thank you, Mrs. Kallstrom, and please give my regards to Mr. Kallstrom.”
“Oh, yah. Have a nice day.” She accompanied Grace to the front of the store. “Will Mr. Sullivan be driving you home now?”
“No, I prefer to walk.” She reached for the door handle.
“Be careful of the gangsters.” The shopkeeper tossed out before continuing the lecture in Norwegian. A knot formed in her throat, as the man’s face from last night flashed before her eyes.
Grace risked a look in the direction of her brother. Maybe she should have him drive her home, but he was still engaged in a conversation with the new guy. Her brother may be the county sheriff, but she never knew if he was talking to one of the good guys or one of the bad, especially now.

Lakam

book one from The Mana Series

The Mana Series, Mana is Filipino for ‘legacy’.
It is 1607. The Spanish have landed on the shores of the Philippines to pacify the natives, convert them to Christianity, and mine the islands for its gold.

Headstrong and loyal, Lakam, a Babaylan, refuses to submit to Spanish imperial authority and convert to Christianity. With her village destroyed and her people killed, she seeks refuge in the Cave of Rituals in the jungle vastness of the sacred mountains, but she is caught, raped and tortured. On the eve of her execution, she regains her freedom with the help of her jailer, Joaquin Santiago, who refuses to see her killed. Now a remontada (outlaw), Lakam realizes the old ways will cease to exist unless she finds a way for it to continue in the ruined ashes of the world she knows.

Excerpt:

“Go back to your homes and prepare your belongings, but only what is necessary— food and clothing. Leave anything that will slow our journey. The white men will return soon and they must not find us here. I will send messengers to tell you when we leave and when you see them you should be ready to go,” The Datu told his people.

Everyone hurried away to do their chieftain’s bidding. Their hushed tones of alarm sounded like the waves against the breakwater. Children bewildered at not being able to play whined beside their mothers. A strong sea breeze rustled the coconut fronds overhead, dangerously knocking the coconuts against each other. People stayed away from the base of the trees burdened with fruit to avoid these falling on them. The warriors waited for the Datu to leave before they too went to their own families to make their own preparations. As soon as they were ready, they would bring their families to the great hall in the Datu’s house so they could be sure of their families’ safety and look after the Datu at the same time.

Lakam faced the wind defiantly, like the change she refused to accept. However, she knew after today things would never be the same again.

Seven for a Secret

1920’s Historical Fiction Meets Contemporary RomCom

Available August 12th on Amazon, BN.com, or ask for it at your local bookstore!

It’s the year 2000, and twenty-four-year-old Kate moves into a new apartment to find a new state of independence in a new millennium. Almost immediately, she starts crushing on a hot guy who lives in her building. Deciding to take a break from her boyfriend Dexter, Kate believes the only thing now separating her from the fresh object of her sexual fantasies is the thin wall between their neighboring apartments.

A former 1920s hotel, Camden Court has housed many lonely lives over the decades—and is where a number of them have come to die. They’re not all resting in peace, however, including ninety-year-old Olive, who dropped dead in Kate’s apartment and continues to make her presence known.

For Olive has a secret she’s dying to tell. One linking her to the sex, scandal, and sacrifice of a young dreamer named Lon. As the past haunts the present, Kate’s romantic notion that the thrill-of-the-chase beats the reality-after-the-catch unexpectedly entwines her modern-day love life with Lon’s Jazz Age tragedy.

With a little supernatural and a lotta’ razzle-dazzle, Seven for a Secret is where historical fiction meets contemporary rom-com—from the Roaring Twenties when the “New Woman” was born, to the modern Noughties when she really came of age.

SUMMARY:
Chris, a sexy tattoo artist, tries to win the heart of Sarah, a grad student with little interest in him, in this second e-short and follow-up to Helena Hunting’s gripping love story, Clipped Wings—“twisted, dark, incredibly erotic…a love story like no other” (USA TODAY bestselling author Alice Clayton).

Part owner of the Chicago tattoo shop Inked Armor, Chris Zelter is a talented artist who decorates skin with gorgeous designs. He might look the part of the typical jacked-up, inked-up bad-boy, but underneath is a fiercely loyal, complicated man. Kicked out at sixteen, Chris has had to fend for himself for the last twelve years, making his Inked Armor crew as much family as they are business partners. For him, it’s enough—until he meets Sarah Adamson.

A grad student waitressing at the local strip club, Sarah is used to propositions and crude comments. The job is a means to an end—finish her MBA, pay off the tuition loans, and get a good job. Then she won’t have to rely on anyone to take care of her. So when brawny, tatted up Chris begins hanging out at the club, she rebuffs his advances. At first. But Chris isn’t like her usual clientele: despite his hard exterior, he’s almost…sweet.

Sometimes, the people with the roughest edges have the biggest hearts.

EXCERPT:
At the end of my shift I changed out of my slut attire and back into my jeans and T-shirt, then headed out the back door. The security guard had changed. He was one of the ones I didn’t know. Or trust.

He gave me a sidelong glance. “You want me to walk you to your car?”

“I’m right there.” I pointed to my Tercel.

His eyes narrowed. “That’s your ride?”

It wasn’t much of a ride, compared to some of the flashy cars parked out here. The girls who performed the best also got the best perks, leased cars being one of them. I was perfectly happy not to be among the privileged few. “Yeah. Have a good night.”

“I think I should walk you over.”

I was parked under one of the lights. If he was looking for a little end-of-night action, it wasn’t the most covert place to have it happen. He must have read the skepticism in my expression.

“One of the guys on camera detail warned me that some dude was out here fucking around by the cars. It was during shift change, so there wasn’t anyone here. I’d feel better if you let me check things out.”

I glanced nervously at my car and shrugged. “Yeah. Okay.”

I trailed behind him as he stalked across the lot. He walked around the vehicle, looking for . . . signs of forced entry maybe? When he didn’t find anything sinister, I pulled on the handle to find that it was locked.

“Huh, that’s odd.”

His shoulders rolled back and his eyes shot around the dark lot. “What?” His hand went behind him, as if he was getting ready to go for a piece. It wasn’t the first time I suspected the security was armed with more than brass knuckles and walkies.

“I don’t lock my doors.”

“What?” He looked at me like I was crazy.

“Do you see this?” I gestured to the Tercel and then motioned around the lot. “Of all the cars here, who would choose mine to steal?” I peered into the backseat. All the doors had been locked. Only one person would do that.

I rummaged around in my purse until I found my keys. After unlocking the door, I bent down and felt around under the front seat until my fingers closed around a keychain. I bit my lip to stop the stupid grin from breaking out. Though it would be more convenient to have my own key, there was satisfaction in knowing he’d drop one off for me because he wanted to see me. “It’s cool. My b— friend was just leaving me a key.” I almost stumbled over the word.

“Next time, tell your friend to leave it with one of us instead of sneaking around back here. We’ll get it to you.”

“Yeah, sure. Thanks.”

Chris would never leave his key with one of these beefcakes. I slid into the driver’s seat and let the bouncer shut my door. He waited until I pulled out of the spot before he ambled back to his post. He was a lot nicer than some of the other guys who worked for Xander, surprisingly.

I checked my phone at the first red light. There were several texts from Chris—the most recent were admonishments for not locking my doors. The ones before and after contained an invitation to stay the night and a message about the key he left under the driver’s seat. Tonight hadn’t been bad, so I wasn’t about to pass up the offer. I was glad I’d packed an overnight bag, as I always did.

I pulled into the parking spot reserved for Chris’s bike. He’d angled it at the top of the space so there would be enough room for my car. He was always thoughtful like that. It made me feel like a bitch for not inviting him over to my place more often, where parking wasn’t an issue.

It had been too long since I’d spent any real time with him. I didn’t like how much that bothered me, or how excited I’d been about the text and key. That I constantly packed a bag in advance was a red flag I chose to ignore.

I was quiet as I made the trek up the stairs to his apartment and unlocked the door. The light above the ancient, avocado-green stove was on, casting a pale glow over the dated kitchen. There was a note propped up on the counter with my name written across the front in Chris’s elegant cursive. I always teased him that he wrote like a girl.

I set my bag down quietly, though a bomb could go off and Chris would sleep right through it. I left my shoes on, because Chris insisted I never walk barefoot around his place, and crossed over to the counter. There were little doodles in the corners of the note he left me. Designs that reminded me of the tattoos he put on other people. Ones he refused to put on me.

Hey sweetlips,

I hope you had a decent night. There are fresh towels in the
bathroom and a sandwich in the fridge. Give me a kiss before you
pass out.

~Chris

I folded it and put it carefully inside my bag. I had a little box of notes like these from him in my bedroom. I kept every single one.

Shadow Hunter by Kait Ballenger….Tour Stop & Review

ShadowHunter_FINAL

Shadow Hunter (Execution Underground 0.5)
by Kait Ballenger
Release date: August 4, 2014

Blurb:

See where it all began in this exciting prequel to The Execution Underground, Kait Ballenger’s sexy paranormal series about the men who hunt evil and the women who love them.

Vampire hunter Damon Brock’s first assignment with the Execution Underground is Rochester, New York. But he isn’t the only hunter in town gunning for vamp blood. Tiffany Solow is ruthless when it comes to slaying the monsters that destroyed her family—and she works solo. But when she meets the mysterious hunter who wants more than just her turf, the line between good and evil blurs as they must decide between their lifelong beliefs…and their newfound desires.

My review:

Shadow Hunter by Kait Ballenger takes us back to the very beginning of
Damon’s story and his role in The Execution Underground. I was dying
to hear more about Damon and learn his backstory. Well, Shadow Hunter
gave all of it and it was amazing. Emotional, tense, tender….just
amazing.

Damon Brock is settled in Rochester, NY, and is ready to get down to
business and go after one of the biggest vampires in the city. Never
in a million years did he expect to run into a rogue vampire hunter
after the same mission he was….and it was a woman. Tiffany Solow.
Women weren’t allowed to be a part of The EU and even if Tiffany was
one hell of a hunter, she was still crossing all sorts of lines she
shouldn’t be crossing.

Now, after getting her out of a sticky situation, and realizing the
vampires they are hunting have a few new traits that are making them
an even bigger force to be reckoned with, he starts to have a nagging
suspicion that he knows Tiffany. He fears the reason he may know her
is because she’s the girl he had been paired with as pen-pals when he
started training with The EU. The problems are numerous if that was
the case. One, because he had fallen in love with that girl through
her letters, and two, because she was the sister of his best friend.
A best friend whose death he was responsible for.

Now, with mounting attractions, big vampire trouble, and trying to
keep and entire city safe, tensions are running high between Damon and
Tiffany. Are they doomed before they even had a start?

Oh man, this was a great story. I was so intrigued by Damon when I
read Immortal Hunter and was dying to know what had happened in his
past to cause him the pain that was lying just under the surface.
Well, we got a lot of answers in Shadow Hunter and it was fantastic.
I’m going to try not to give any spoilers away but I will say that the
connection Tiffany and Damon shared from their letter writing days was
beautiful and really helped fuel their physical attraction when they
come face to face. Tiffany is one hell of a tough cookie and I really
enjoyed her resolve and tenacity. Damon is amazing as well. A
skilled fighter with a heart is a combo that’s hard to beat. And
throw in the whole mystery of what was going on with this new breed of
vampires and this story was non-stop action from the very first
chapter.

This is absolutely a series I will continue to look forward to and
thank you, Kait, for giving us Damon’s start! I loved it!

ARC Review….Show Me, Baby by Cherise Sinclair

Show Me Baby COVER

Synopsis:

A Masters of the Shadowlands Novella

After his last lover chose her career over him, Jake knows he wants a woman who will put him at the top of her priorities—as he would with her. One of the trainees, Rainie, has caught his attention. Lush body, a gift for living life to the fullest, always laughing or smiling. Yeah. She trips all his switches. But she’s never given him a second look and that’s damned annoying.

Rainie has been burned enough times that she’s not going to get serious about any man. Sure, the BDSM club trainees are supposed to be looking for a permanent Dom, but no harm, no foul—they don’t need to know she lied. Trainees get to be involved in everything—and with everyone. But there’s one she avoids. Master Jake is always frowning at her. No matter how gorgeous he is, she doesn’t need any disapproving Dom up in her business.

Unfortunately, her best friends are having a double wedding. Little hearts are floating in the air. Every breath is filled with romance. Rainie is doomed.

My review:

Show Me, Baby is the 9th story in author Cherise Sinclair’s Master of the Shadowlands Series as well as novella number 7 in the 1,001 Dark Nights Series. Admittedly, this is the first of Cherise’s works that I have read and oh boy…I am hooked and have just purchased the entire series!

To say Rainie has had a sad life would be the understatement of the century. Having a mother who didn’t want her, a father who left her at seven, living in foster care homes with one in particular that left deep emotional scars, and never really feeling she was good enough to fit in anywhere, you could say her issues cup overfloweth. But she was determined. Determined to rise above all of the adversity in her life and become someone. She finally finished school with an MBA and has found a place where she felt she somewhat belonged…Club Shadowlands. Sure, she still had her issues and she was still new to the BDSM scene, but she knew deep down this was a home of sorts for her. Only problem? Jake. The delish Dom was a blast from the past she was trying to forget. He was her secret crush all of high school. He had no idea who she was back then and just seeing him now brought back too much pain. But even that pain couldn’t stop her attraction to him. Even after all these years, he was still everything she wanted. But surely he wouldn’t be interested in someone with a past like hers…..or would he?

Jake has it all. A successful career as a veterinarian, a nice home, a position as a Master at Club Shadowlands, good looks and a killer body. There’s only one thing missing…a woman to share his life with. His last lover had left him and even though it still stung, he was ready to move on. And the one he’d like to move on is the sassy and beautiful new trainee at the club…Rainie. There was something about her. She had a lust for life, was loyal and kind to her friends she’s made at Club Shadowlands and had a huge heart. Now, if only she would give him the time of day. Seems when it came to him she was always taking off in the opposite direction. Luckily for him, she was in need of a reevaluation and he was just assigned the Dom in charge of it. This was exactly the opportunity he needed to convince Rainie to take a chance on him.

Rainie and Jake take off on a journey of self discovery and stumble across love along the way. The question is, will Rainie be able to shake her feelings of unworthiness and give a relationship with Jake a chance?

Oh my, I adored this story. Rainie broke my heart. Her childhood was positively wretched and I felt so bad for her. I also totally understood her feelings of being less than everyone. No one really ever told her she wasn’t so how could she think anything different? But her resolve and strength was admirable beyond words. She picked herself up, brushed herself off and kept on going. She is amazing that way. She is also fiercely loyal to her friends and I adore that in a character. Jake is just, um, totally drool worthy. He is handsome, successful, charming and commanding. The total package. He knows Rainie better than she ever thought and he gives her all of what she needs. And damn, it is beyond smoking hot! Together they make an incredible couple. Giving each other what each other needs and forming a beautiful emotional connection. Of course, there are a few stumbles along the way but that just makes this story that much better.

So here I am, proof that even if you haven’t read this series before, you will love this book and this was a great intro to The Masters of Shadowlands. I can’t wait to read more of this series! Thank you, Cherise, for Jake and Rainie and their amazing story.

She hit it big as America’s country sweetheart, but a year of living like a rock star plus a stint in rehab has killed any good will she had with her label. The suits have ordered Kit to shape up or ship out of the limelight. The last thing she needs is a hot, sexy distraction with a sinful smile.

He doesn’t know the meaning of the word.

A Nashville firefighter, he’s living the single life with a revolving door of parties, friends, and a different woman in his bed every night. When his normal life suddenly collides with the girl on his favorite Rolling Stone cover, he sees the perfect chance to fulfill his ultimate fantasy and see just how bad Kit can be.

Sometimes bad is so very good.

With three weeks until Kit leaves for her big tour, Max promises to give her a break from being the good girl–no strings attached. But when hot days lead to sultry nights, the lines get blurred and suddenly three weeks of bad might not be good enough.

My Review:

Temptation is the newest novel from author Robin Covington. Being a high Robin fan, I was so excited to read this story. Well, Robin delivered once again. This book was hot, sexy, and sweet all rolled into one exciting package.

Country music star Kit Landry is still learning. She’s learning how to deal with the public, who she can trust, if she can stay clean and sober and if this is really how she wants her life to be. Not saying she isn’t grateful for all her fame and success, but things can get a little crazy now and then and just a tad overwhelming. Of course, all of this seems unimportant when she could very well be burned alive in the fire she was currently trapped in. Lucky for her, Max comes to the rescue. Literally. The firefighter that saved her life also turns out to be insanely sexy and handsome and when a scheduled PR event to celebrate Max’s heroics turns into a swoon worthy kiss, Kit knows this is exactly the kind of distraction she wants but can’t afford.

Firefighter Max Butler had been a huge Kit Landry fan since she came onto the country music scene…and he had just pulled her from a fire. What were the odds? And after that kiss he just gave her at the PR event, there was no way he could get this girl out of his system. She may have told him that she didn’t have time for any kind of relationship, but she did have three weeks before her next tour. Perfect. He wasn’t interested in anything long term either, not after his heart was broken a few years ago. So, three weeks was just the right amount of time to spend with Kit….now, if he could just get her to see the smoking hot brilliance of his plan.

It’s only fitting that the fire that brought Kit and Max together has ignited one between them. A fire that burns hot and isn’t going to be put out any time soon. And thank goodness for that because these to together are insanely hot!

I believe in a previous review I had mentioned that Robin can write one hell of a sex scene. Well, I emphatically make that statement again. This book was HOT! But besides that, Max and Kit were amazing characters. Kit has been through a a lot in her short life and is determined to put it all in the past and rise above. She has, for the most part, but it wasn’t without a few stumbles. But no matter what those stumbles are, her talent outshines and outweighs the negative press and she is so thankful for that. Max is sex on a firefighter uniform clad stick. He’s also a hard worker, determined and loyal. Oh, and that boy can speak some dirty talk! Yum! But the thing I loved most about Max and Kit was that in the end, after enduring more that a few issues in the weeks they spend together, realize they have found something special in each other. Sure, they are both reluctant to admit it, but when they do? It’s magic. There weren’t many dull moments in this book, if any, and I loved that fast pace. From starting out with a burning building, to snakes in the music industry trying to take Kat down, to jealous firehouse members, this book had it all!

Thank you, Robin, for giving us Max and Kit! I can’t wait to see what you have in store for us next.

Excerpt: Meet Jax and Lily

Dinner and a dirty mouth
My face pinks when the waiter clears his throat, no doubt he’d heard Jax’s last comment.
“Are you ready to hear the specials?”
“Are we?” Jax arches an eyebrow, his eyes gleaming with delight. He’s not the slight bit embarrassed, but knows I am and is quite enjoying himself.
“Yes. Please.” I give him the evil eye and force my full attention back to the waiter. The entire time the waiter talks about the specials I feel Jax’s eyes burning into me.
“I’ll give you a moment to let you decide.” Graciously, the waiter excuses himself.
“Why did you do that?” I scold, my voice low.
“Do what?” He leans back in his seat, crossing his arms over his thick chest.
“You know exactly what I’m talking about.”
“Do I?”
“You enjoy watching me flustered, don’t you?”
Jax arches both eyebrows. Bad choice of words.
“You know what I mean.”
Leaning in, his voice gritty and sexy, he looks me straight in the eyes when he speaks. “I love watching you. Period. But what I like best is watching you pretend you’re unaffected. It’s like an unspoken challenge.” He pauses and leans in even closer. “I love the pink that creeps up your cheeks when I say something dirty. The way your pussy throbs when I mention what I’m going to do to you later, and you wiggle in your seat trying to control it. So yeah, I guess I do like watching you flustered. You sit and give your attention to the waiter, trying to pretend you’re listening to whatever he’s saying instead of thinking of me feeding you my cock later, but we both know you didn’t hear one word he said. Hell I didn’t hear one word watching you, just knowing what you were thinking about.”
This time, I see the waiter before he’s close enough to hear us. He smiles as he reaches our table. “So what can I get for you this evening? Did I interest you in one of our specials?”
I look at the waiter, then Jax, who arches an eyebrow with a knowing smirk on his face, then back to the waiter. “The specials all sounded delicious. I just can’t decide for myself. I’m going to defer to my date to pick one for me.” I return my eyes to Jax with a cheeky grin.
He throws his head back with a chuckle and looks at the poor confused waiter. “We’ll take whatever two are your favorites. Surprise us.”

Meet Liv Michaels
It may have been seven years, but I’d know him anywhere. Sure, he’s grown, filled out in all the right places, but his captivating blue eyes and cocky grin are exactly the way I remember. Even though I’d much rather forget.

Liv Michaels is almost there. She’s smart, determined and weeks away from landing the job she’s dreamed about for years. Time healed old wounds, even her broken heart from the devastation of being crushed by her first love.

Meet Vince Stone
Women love a fighter, especially a good one. Lucky for me, I’m damn good. But there’s one woman that isn’t interested. Not again, anyway.

Vince ‘The Invincible’ Stone is every woman’s fantasy…strong, sexy, confident and completely in control. Growing up surrounded by chaos, he’s learned never to get too attached. Love will drag you down. He adores women, treats them well, puts their own needs before his own…for the night anyway. With the biggest fight of his life coming up, his focus should be on training.

When fate brings Vince & Liv back together again, there’s no denying the chemistry is still there. But can Vince erase the old scars their past left behind? Or will Liv hurt him instead?

About DANGEROUS TERRITORY

A SEXY STRANGER
Flirting with danger is reporter Grace Grainger’s modus operandi. But she’s learned the hard way not to grow attached to the soldiers she’s embedded with in Afghanistan. To escape from her pain and loneliness, she fantasizes about the hot night she spent with a gorgeous stranger three years before in D.C. Grace never thought she’d see him again-let alone need him to rescue her . . .

AN EXPLOSIVE NIGHT
Air Force Master Sergeant Josh Travers knows journalists are nothing but trouble. So when he has to risk the lives of his team to save some reporter who’s been separated from her patrol, he’s not happy-until he recognizes her stunning eyes and delicious curves. Josh has never wanted a woman like he wants Grace. Even in an Afghan cave with a sandstorm and enemy troops closing in, he can’t deny the desire. This might be the end for both of them-or one hell of a beginning.

My review:

My review:
Dangerous Territory is the introduction novella to author Emmy Curtis’ Alpha Ops series and talk about a hot, steamy and pulse pounding start! I loved this story from start to finish.

Reporter Grace Grainger is used to the battle field and all that came with it. It’s why her motto up until recently had been to keep detached and not make any connections. The problem was she ignored that on her last assignment and it ended up causing her enough pain that she vowed to never slip up again. She lost a friend in the war and the memory would haunt her forever. Now, the night before her leaving on her newest assignment, she was looking for a distraction and the liquor in her glass wasn’t cutting it. Luckily the sexy stranger that just walked into the hotel bar looks like he could do the trick. A one time, no real names, night of hot sex is just what she needed. And he seemed to be up for the task….

Ready to head out on his next deployment, Josh Travers walked into the hotel bar never expecting to see a gorgeous and mysterious woman, let alone end up spending an unforgettable night with her. A night that has haunted his dreams for years. That same mysterious beauty was the absolute last person he ever expected to see here in the middle of a war zone. But here she was, and she was in need of rescuing. Lucky for her that’s exactly what he did for a living. Unlucky for him was him finding out she’s a reporter….the one profession he loathed. Just as well since he never wanted any kind of relationship anyway. Now, if he could just believe that.

Thrown into a tense situation after meeting years earlier and spending that one unforgettable night, emotions are bound to run hot between Grace and Josh. Will they be able to weather the emotional storm and turn their passion into something more than what they shared that one night?

Oh man, I loved this book! It started out with plenty of heat and passion and only got better from there. Being thrown into an impossible situation and being forced to spend time together was exactly what Grace and Josh need and fate certainly had a hand in getting the ball rolling. I loved both characters and their personalities meshed so well. Grace had me laughing out loud more than a few times with her wit and attempts at lightening their bleak situation. Josh was oh so alpha and oh so delicious. Love that in a character! They both have their own reasons for wanting to stay unattached and they are certainly valid, but they both realize quickly that those reasons are all thrown out the window…and thank goodness for that. The ending of this book was freaking amazing and had me sporting a big goofy grin. Have I mentioned I love Josh?

If you love a good romantic suspense with a great balance of heat and action, this is a book for you. I cannot wait for the rest of this series. Thank you, Emmy, for a great read!

Excerpt:

He withdrew his arm from her shoulders and grabbed his water bottle. “Do you want to rehydrate?”
“Sure, I drank all my water in the M-RAP.”
“Here.” He reached up into the darkness and his hand collided with bare skin. He felt further up and encountered more bare skin. “What the…?”
“Oh! That’s embarrassing. When you bought me in from the bathroom, I had only put my panties back on. My jeans are still out there.”
“What? You take your pants off to pee?” He was getting a strange insight into women here, and he was incredibly uncomfortable and intrigued. Not about the pee, but about the type of woman who felt comfortable enough to take off her clothes in the middle of a war zone.
“I don’t have a dick, you know. How did you expect me to pee?”
“You might not have a dick, but you have balls,” he said grudgingly. “Do you want me to get your pants?”
“It’s okay. I’ll get them. I know where I left them.” Her voice trailed off as she went around the corner toward the entrance to the cave.
“No wait!” he hissed. Shit. What was he thinking, letting her wander around outside. He jumped to his feet, ignoring the pain that shot up his leg, and rounded the corner, to see her perfectly silhouetted in the mouth of the cave against the moonlit sky. “Get down!”
She turned to look at him instead of ducking. Damned civilians. He launched himself at her, pulling her to the ground, but trying to brace her fall. He didn’t really succeed.
Breath huffed out of her as he landed right on top of her. “Shh,” he said against her ear. In the distance, he could hear voices. With the echoes it was difficult to know if they belonged to people who were directly in front of them or across the valley. And suddenly, as the voices drifted off into the distance, he became aware of her body under his. The silence. When he moved slightly, his mind shifted to the perfect night they shared in D.C. The night he’d thought about so often. The night that had sustained him through some difficult deployments. He’d wanted to find her, but was honestly too scared to let go of his fantasy. Reality always sucked, and her being a damn reporter sucked the most.
He raised himself on his forearm and whispered against her ear, “Are you all right?”
She nodded, causing her short black hair to brush against his face. He closed his eyes and inhaled. His body weakened, and then got a lot harder. Fuck, he almost wanted to cry. He had dreamed of being this close to her again, to be on top of her, to be able to feel her scent overwhelm him again. But hell. Fate had played a dirty trick. Here, in a fucking cave in Afghanistan. What a fuck up.
She moved under him, and holy shit, he was sure she had moaned. Or wait, maybe that was a groan. “Am I hurting you?” he asked, suddenly concerned.
“In ways you can’t possibly imagine.” She let out a sigh. “No, I’m fine. I might need help up, though.”
He pulled himself off her and helped her up, and was very, very glad for the darkness of the cave. He knew his dick was tenting his BDUs. Thank god no one could see him. Then she stood to one side and the moon shone directly at him.
“Well, soldier, is that a night vision scope in your pocket or are you just pleased to see me?”
“I’m a fucking airman, not a soldier. And what did you expect, you writhing under me when I was just trying to save your sorry ass.”
“Oh. I’m sorry. I was joking, I thought that was your scope in your pocket. I was just trying…”
Shit. Shit. Busted.
He took a deep breath. And tried to laugh. “We seemed to understand each other better three years ago.”
“Well, we didn’t exactly do a lot of talking back then.” She smiled wryly.
Josh tried really hard not to close his eyes and give in to the emotion still coursing through him from being so close to her again after all those years of just dreaming about her.
Holding up one finger, she turned. She pointed at her jeans and nodded for his approval. He gave a tiny nod, and she virtually scampered out to pick them up.
As she entered the cave again, with a grin, he leaned against the wall to watch her in the moonlight. She bent to step into the pants and her glossy dark hair swung in front of her. She pulled them up, and started to fasten them. He couldn’t help himself, God help him.
His hand hooked over the top of the jeans, preventing her from finishing doing them up. She straightened. She should have had a quizzical look on her face. But she didn’t. It was like she knew. She met his eyes and he detected a tiny flicker of her eyebrows, as if saying “Yes?” Still holding her jeans, he pulled her toward him, his whole body throbbing for her. Every one of his cells felt as if they were reaching for her. Every feeling he had ever had, every warm thought, wrapped around her. He wanted her so badly. Had wanted her for three years. If he didn’t think about it, maybe he could forget she was a soul-sucking hack. His body certainly seemed to have forgotten already.
Desperate to taste those lips again, he abruptly pulled her against his body and in the same instant, claimed her mouth as his. She tasted every bit as good as his memory served. His body responded instantly, as if it had been waiting three years just to find itself in this very place.
Her mouth opened under his, kissing him back, her tongue dancing under his, making him long for the feel of her tongue elsewhere on his body.
A crack of a twig or something from outside put his instincts back in place as he wrenched away from her. Christ, what had he been thinking? He never broke the rules. She looked puzzled, but still she didn’t say anything.
He took a huge step away from her, shaking his head at himself. What. The. Fuck. Was wrong with him?
She took a deep breath in and let it go in a long sigh. But still she remained silent. Why didn’t she say something? Shit was she planning on writing about this? Of course she was. That was what she did. His career was over. His status as one of the most fast-tracked senior enlisted airmen in his career field was over. Damage control.
“I don’t know why I did that. I’m sorry for breaking protocol. I hope we’re still off the record?” He hated how hopeful he sounded.
She laughed lightly. “Exactly what about this…” she gestured around the cave. “…is protocol? Exactly what are you breaking?”

Exclusive Excerpt:

Jayce discovers that Violet is receiving threatening text messages from a stalker. He escorts her home and stays at her apartment—on the couch—when it’s clear the stalker is watching them. This is from Violet’s perspective the morning after.

The silence stretches between us, growing more uncomfortable as I feel his eyes on me. I sip my coffee, desperate to have something to do, plotting my escape so I can shower and change and … why is he still here?

“You didn’t have to stay.”

“I did.” His voice is low, intense.

“I’m a big girl. I can handle it.”

“Doesn’t mean you should have to handle it alone.” Jayce slides a shiny iPhone across the small table to me. “This is for you. A private number.”

What the what? “You can’t give me your phone,” I say stupidly.

“I’m not. This is your phone. A new number, so you won’t have to deal with those texts. Take it, Violet.”

I know I should be grateful, for this and for everything he’s done for me so far, but anger flares instead. Presumptuous, arrogant jerk. “Do you think you can just throw money at a problem and it’ll go away?”

“It works sometimes, Violet.”

My cheeks flame with embarrassment that he thinks I need to be rescued. “Well, it doesn’t work for me.”

Jayce pushes back from the table and grabs our empty plates, spinning toward the kitchen. Plates clatter and water runs.

I lean on the wall by the sink. “Since when do you think you can just wave your magic rock star wand and do this? Fix this? I don’t want your pity.”

There. It’s out there—a four-letter word that stings worse than any filthy epithet. Pity.

“Fuck pity. I don’t want some nasty stalker sending you messages like the ones from last night. Call it a gift.”

I plunge my hand deep into my hair, trying to hold onto my fraying composure. “I don’t like your mouth,” I hiss, hating the F-bomb as it explodes from his lips.

Jayce gives me a slow look, intimate and searching. His hands drip with water, but he reaches to touch my face. I steel myself. I will not flinch.

“Oh, but I love yours,” he murmurs, his thumb ghosting across my lower lip. He strokes my cheek as my color rises. I’m frozen under his gaze. “And this blush. I can’t help it. Seeing what he wrote makes me a bit … protective.”

I stumble backward out of his grasp. I don’t know Jayce from Adam. I was stupid to let him take me home, and to trust him in my apartment while I freaked out and melted down. He could be another stalker, for all I know.

“I don’t want to be protected,” I say, and the lie slides out of my mouth as I edge back toward my room, wishing Neil would hurry up in the bathroom so I could dive in there and get away from Jayce. “I want to be left alone.”

“As you wish, princess,” he says, and he winks. He stinking winks, like he knows I’ll get that line from The Princess Bride. Like he knows I can’t stay mad at him because he’s irresistible.

I can’t. He is. But that’s not the point.

“You can’t just come in here and act like you own me, like you can just do things and I’ll be OK with that,” I say, pointing to the phone, but my argument’s already losing steam.

Jayce shakes his head and picks up his keys from a side table. I think he’s going to walk out the door—and an apology is on the tip of my tongue—but he spins and walks straight to me, invading my space, backing me up against my apartment wall with a soft thud.

His chest rises and I feel heat radiating off him, less than an inch separating our bodies. There’s something so powerful, so masculine about him that my heart beats fast in my chest, and he threads his fingers through the wild tangles of my hair.

“I don’t act like I own you,” he says, his breath on my cheek, tickling the corner of my mouth.

“You act like you want to control me.” I whimper as his hand tightens to a fist in my hair.

“Ah, but control is a different thing entirely. Control can be earned. Power can be given.” Jayce’s nose brushes my cheek. “You gave me control last night. You let me protect you.”

I raise my hands to his chest to push him away, to put distance between us, but I falter as I feel his chest rise and fall, feel his heart beat hard inside it. I shake my head. “No.”

Jayce’s shoulders drop and he allows another inch of air between us, his hands skimming through my hair as he releases me. “No is a word I respect. Always.”

I feel his body shift to turn away from me and I’m suddenly bereft without his touch, limp like I could slide down the wall. “But—”

His body is hard against mine in an instant, erasing the air between us. “But I want to have you. And I will.” Jayce’s mouth twists toward mine and I part my lips, anticipating a kiss. Instead, I feel a sharp sting in my lower lip.

He bit me!

And in one motion, Jayce turns and walks out the door.
