I also had the pleasure of interviewing Lorelei for the 1,001 Dark Nights Monthly Newsletter.

Here is a snippet:

I adored Roped In. Sutton Grant was sweet, shy, and sexy while London Gradsky was a total spitfire I would love to hang out with. What made you choose Sutton and London for your 1,001 Dark Nights novella?

I adored Sutton in TURN AND BURN, he was such a great friend to Tanna—and it intrigued me that he wasn’t a wild cowboy on the rodeo circuit like so many of the male characters I’ve written. As much as I love all of my secondary characters, not all of them have enough conflict to carry a full length book, so I knew Sutton’s story was perfect for a “slice of life” novella. And London just blew onto the page, the in-your-face cowgirl with a smart mouth who was the perfect match for the laid-back steer wrestler.

Ok….so you mention a whole closet full of cowboy boots. Do you have a favorite pair?

I have a new pair that are mango-colored embroidered with flowers that are awesome. I’ve been eyeing a new pair with fringe but I’ve resisted temptation…so far.

The book titles for your Blacktop Cowboys Series and Rough Riders Series are some of my favorite out there. Do you have a hard time choosing a title that reflects what the story is about?

I have to have a title before I can even start a story. With the Rough Riders series some of the characters’ names were great for a play on words in the titles (RAISING KANE, ALL JACKED UP, CHASIN’ EIGHT) and I’m such a sucker for song titles as book titles. With the Blacktop Cowboys, I like using the ___ and ___ theme, then mix it up for the next book and find a western word or phrase. Sometimes I have to fight for my titles. My NAL editor wasn’t crazy about HILLBILLY ROCKSTAR, but she agreed to let me use it and she grew to love it. I think it helped that the title fit the character so much. I originally had HORSE OF A DIFFERENT COLOR as the title for RODE HARD, PUT UP WET. And uh, yeah, my editor at the time nixed that title and I’m grateful.

You have a touching real life experience that made it into Chasin’ Eight about an adoption in your extended family. Have you ever heard from any readers saying you’ve maybe helped them with a personal experience of their own?

I get tons of email from readers who are happy to tell me that reading my books have made them grab onto their significant other and have a more satisfying sex life. I also get readers who’ve contacted me and relayed their experiences when something I’ve written about strikes a chord with them. Most recently a woman’s husband had been put in a medically induced coma, like Carolyn McKay in COWBOY TAKE ME AWAY, and she said when he came out he could tell her things she’d said to him while she sat by his bedside. Those types of things are so gratifying to hear because readers are happy that I’ve touched on an experience in their lives that they can relate to.

About 1,001 Dark Nights:

1001 Dark Nights is a collection of novellas that are breathtakingly sexy and magically romantic. Some are paranormal, some are erotic. Each and every one is compelling and page turning. Inspired by the exotic tales of The Arabian Nights, 1001 Dark Nights features 12 New York Times and USA Today bestselling authors. In the original, Scheherazade desperately attempts to entertain her husband, the King of Persia, with nightly stories so that he will postpone her execution. In our versions, month after month, each of our fabulous authors puts a unique spin on the premise and creates a tale that a new Scheherazade tells long into the dark, dark night.

About the author:

A bit about me: When I’m not squirreled away behind my laptop writing fun, sexy, contemporary erotic romances set in the modern day Wild West, I can be found reading everything under the sun, practicing yoga until I’m a pretzel, shootin’ my .22, watching the Professional Bull Riders tour on Versus, and running a kid’s taxi service, all in the guise of avoiding housework and rustlin’ up vittles.
Why do I have a particular fondness for all things western? Well, I’m a fourth generation South Dakotan, living in the Black Hills, which is chock-full of interesting characters, including cowboys, Indians, ranchers, and bikers. The geographical diversity of the surrounding area showcases mountains, plains, and badlands. Living in and writing about rural settings gives me a unique perspective, especially since I’m not writing historical westerns. Through my fictional world, I can show the ideals and the cowboy way of life are still very much alive.

Catch Me If You Can by Christine Bell….Review

CMIYC cover

Synopsis:

Sadie Leighton might spend her days slinging hash, but she spends her nights in disguise, conning the rich and undeserving, taking what she needs from the worst of the lot to make ends meet. This last job will be the mother lode…the one to get her out of the biz altogether, if only she can get past the infuriatingly gorgeous stranger intent on foiling her plans and haunting her dreams…

Jake Callahan has one thing on his mind, and that’s revenge. After years of preparation, he’s finally got all the pieces in place to destroy the man who cost his father his career and, ultimately, his life. Now that the end is in sight, he won’t let anything get in his way. Especially not some fake Countess trying to steal his mark, no matter how sexy she is.

Never one to back down from a challenge, Sadie engages Jake in a battle of wits, but winning it just might put her in danger of losing her heart…

My review:

Catch Me If You Can is the newest book from author Christine Bell and was a thrill ride from start to finish!

When two cons meet up for the same mark, sparks ensue and not just because their jobs are in jeopardy. Sadie and Jake both have different reasons for going after the same man and neither one of them are about to back down. So what happens when you can’t beat em? You join em…and that’s exactly what Sadie and Jake do. They join forces to bring the mark down. But with combined risk comes a bigger risk of danger and the stakes are much higher than a prize. It could mean life or death.

I really enjoyed the premise of this story. It had a great Mr. & Mrs. Smith fell to it where duplicity and sex appeal had equal measure. Sadie and Jake were both interesting characters that made me want to cheer them on, even though they were technically trying to commit a crime. The chemistry was also great between them with the added thrill of being caught in the chase fueling the intensity of their attraction. I also admired the reasons behind both Sadie’s and Jake’s motivation for the con.

I certainly don’t want to ruin any of the story and the tense and exciting situations that arise but take my word that it is a fantastic roller coaster ride!

Thank you, Christine, for an exciting and smoking hot read!

Harbor Island by Carla Neggers…Blog Tour Stop & Excerpt

Harbor Island COVER

Synopsis:

When an FBI agent’s clandestine meeting with an anonymous informant turns into a cold-blooded murder scene, the only clue seems to involve the most legendary and elusive art thief in the world. From the New York Times bestselling author of more than sixty books, Carla Neggers, comes HARBOR ISLAND (Harlequin MIRA, September 2014, $24.95 U.S./$27.95 CAN.), her latest novel featuring former nun and art crime expert turned FBI agent, Emma Sharpe.

Emma Sharpe is still getting used to life with her new fiancé and fellow FBI agent, Colin Donovan, when she receives an anonymous phone call asking her to come to a remote island off the Boston Harbor.
Emma arrives, to find a dead woman lying in a pool of blood. Gripped in the victim’s cold palm is a stone bearing the signature Celtic inscription of an international thief whom Emma’s family of art detectives has been chasing for the past decade.

Emma discovers that the victim, Rachel Bristol, was a filmmaker working on a movie based on the exploits of the legendary art thief, but her research may have led her too close to the truth and gotten her killed. Or perhaps she is the victim of her former husband and stepdaughter, Travis and Maisie Bristol, two of Hollywood’s most powerful movie producers. The Bristols are working on their own film version of the art thefts and clearly didn’t appreciate the competition.

And what of Oliver Fairbairn, a Hollywood consultant on matters of Celtic mythology exactly like the type inscribed on the stone in the dead woman’s hand? Suspicion even falls on Emma’s friend Finian Bracken, a tortured Irish priest now living in Maine. Ten years ago, however, Father Bracken was Mr. Bracken, a happily married businessman who now has ties to the same Irish village where the now infamous art thief struck for the very first time.

Emma knows this is no movie, however, but real life with real lives in danger, including those of her own FBI team and everyone they care about. To protect them, Emma must solve a case that has, for over a decade, stymied the smartest detectives in the world, including her own grandfather…and she must solve it now.

HARBOR ISLAND is available wherever books are sold, and at www.Harlequin.com.

Excerpt:

Boston, Massachusetts
As she wound down her run on the Boston waterfront, Emma Sharpe could feel the effects of jet lag in every stride. Three days home from Dublin, she was still partly on Irish time and had awakened early on the cool November Saturday. She’d strapped her snub-nosed .38 onto her hip, slipped into her worn-out running shoes and was off. With less than a half mile left in her five-mile route, she was confident she hadn’t been followed. Not that as an art-crimes specialist she was an expert at spotting a tail, but she was an FBI agent and knew the basics.
Matt Yankowski, the special agent in charge of the small Boston-based unit Emma had joined in March, hadn’t minced words when he’d addressed his agents yesterday on a video conference call. “This Sharpe thief knows who we are. He knows where we work. It’s also possible he knows where we live. If he doesn’t, he could be trying to find out. Be extra vigilant.” Yank had looked straight at Emma. “Especially you, Emma.”
Yes. Especially her.
This Sharpe thief.
Well, it was true. She was, after all, the granddaughter of Wendell Sharpe, the octogenarian private art detective who had been on the trail of this particular serial art thief for a decade. Her brother, Lucas, now at the helm of Sharpe Fine Art Recovery, was also deeply involved in the stepped-up search for their thief, a clever, brazen individual—probably a man—who had managed to elude capture since his first heist in a small village on the south Irish coast.
Emma slowed her pace and turned onto the wharf where she had a small, ground-level apartment in a three-story brick building that had once been a produce warehouse. Her front windows looked out on a marina that shared the wharf. A nice view, but people passing by to get to their boats would often stop outside her windows for a chat, a cigarette, a phone call. Although she’d grown up on the water in southern Maine, she hadn’t expected her Boston apartment to be such a fishbowl when she’d snapped it up in March, weeks before the boating season.
Had the thief peeked in her windows one day?
She ducked into her apartment, expecting to find Colin still in bed or on the sofa drinking coffee. Special Agent Colin Donovan. A deep-cover agent, another Mainer and her fiancé as of four days ago. He’d proposed to her in a Dublin pub. “Emma Sharpe, I’m madly in love with you, and I want to be with you forever.”
She smiled at the memory as she checked the cozy living area, bedroom and bathroom. Colin wasn’t anywhere in the 300-square-foot apartment they now more or less shared. Then she found the note he’d scrawled on the back of an envelope and left on the counter next to the coffee press in the galley kitchen. “Back soon.”
Not a man to waste words.
He’d filled the kettle and scooped coffee into the press, and he’d taken her favorite Maine wild-blueberry jam out of the refrigerator.
Still smiling, Emma headed for the shower. She was wide awake after her run, early even by her standards. After three weeks in Ireland, she and Colin had thoroughly adapted to the five-hour time difference. Their stay started with a blissful couple of weeks in an isolated cottage, getting to know each other better. Then they got caught up in the disappearance and murder of an American diver and dolphin-and-whale enthusiast named Lindsey Hargreaves. Now, back home in Boston, Emma was reacquainting herself with Eastern Standard Time.
Making love with Colin last night had helped keep her from falling asleep at eight o’clock—one in the morning in Ireland. He seemed impervious to jet lag. His undercover work with its constant dangers and frequent time-zone changes no doubt had helped, but Emma also suspected he was just like that.
Colin would know if someone tried to follow him. No question.
She pulled on a bathrobe and headed back to the kitchen. She made coffee and toast and took them to her inexpensive downsize couch, which was pushed up against an exposed-brick wall and perpendicular to the windows overlooking the marina. She collected up a stack of photographs she and Colin had pulled out last night, including one of herself as a novice at twenty-one. Colin had put it under the light and commented on her short hair and “sensible” shoes. She wore her hair longer now, and although she would never be one for four-inch heels, her shoes and boots were more fashionable than the ones she’d worn at the convent.
Colin had peered closer at the photo. “Ah, but look at that cute smile and the spark in your green eyes.” He’d grinned at her. “Sister Brigid was just waiting for a rugged lobsterman to wander into her convent.”
Emma had gone by the name Brigid during her short time as a novice with the Sisters of the Joyful Heart, a small order on a quiet peninsula not far from her hometown on the southern Maine coast. In September, a longtime member of the convent and Emma’s former mentor, an expert in art conservation, was murdered. Yank had dispatched Colin to keep an eye on her. He’d tried to pass himself off as a lobsterman—he’d been one before joining the Maine marine patrol and then the FBI—but Emma had quickly realized what he was up to.
“I bet you were wearing red lace undies,” he’d said as he’d set the photo back on the table.
Emma had felt herself flush. “I don’t wear red undies now.”
He’d given her one of his sexy, blue-eyed winks. “Wait until Valentine’s Day.”
They’d abandoned the photos and had ended up in bed, making love until she’d finally collapsed in his arms. He was dark-haired, broad-shouldered and scarred, a man who relied on his natural instincts and experience to size up a situation instantly. He didn’t ruminate, and he wasn’t one to sit at a desk for more than twenty minutes at a time. She was more analytical, more likely to see all the ins and outs and possibilities—and she was a ruminator.
As different as they were, Emma thought, she and Colin also had similarities. The FBI, their Maine upbringings, their strong families, their love of Ireland. Their whirlwind romance wasn’t all an “opposites attract” phenomenon, a case of forbidden love that had come on fast and hard. They hadn’t told anyone yet of their engagement. On Monday night in Dublin, Colin had presented her with a beautiful diamond ring, handmade by a jeweler on the southwest Irish coast. She’d reluctantly slipped the ring off her finger when they’d arrived at Boston’s Logan Airport from Dublin late Tuesday.
Emma was so lost in thought, she jumped when her cell phone vibrated on the table. She scooped it up, expecting to see Co-lin’s name on the screen. Instead, it was a number she didn’t recognize. A wrong number? She clicked to answer, but before she could say anything, a woman spoke. “Is this Emma Sharpe? Agent Sharpe with the FBI?”
“Yes, it is. Who are you?”
“What? Oh. My name’s Rachel Bristol. I need to talk to you. It’s important.”
“All right. Please go ahead.”
“Not on the phone. In person. Meet me on Bristol Island. It’s in Boston Harbor. There’s a bridge. You don’t have to take a boat.”
“Ms. Bristol, what’s this about?”
“It’s about your art thief. Bristol Island, Agent Sharpe. Be at the white cottage in thirty minutes or less. There’s a trail by the marina.” She paused. “Come alone. Please. I will talk only to you.”
Rachel Bristol—or whoever she was—disconnected. Emma sprang to her feet. Thirty minutes didn’t give her much time.
She ran to her bedroom and dressed in dark jeans, a dark blue sweater, a leather jacket and boots. She grabbed her credentials and strapped on her service pistol. She didn’t leave a note for Colin. She would text him on the way.
Meeting confidential informants was a tricky business even with protocols, training and experience. But it didn’t matter. Not this time.
Her thief.

Her problem.

About the author:

New York Times bestselling author Carla Neggers is always plotting her next adventure—whether in life or for one of her novels. She wrote her first stories when she climbed her favorite sugar maple with pad and pen at age eleven. Now she is the author of more than sixty novels of romantic suspense and contemporary romance, including her acclaimed Sharpe & Donovan and Swift River Valley series. Her books have sold in over thirty countries, with translations in two-dozen languages, and have earned awards, rave reviews and the loyalty of readers.

Growing up in rural western Massachusetts with three brothers and three sisters, Carla developed an eye for detail and an enduring love for a good story. “My parents moved to New England just before I was born,” says the author. “My father was a Dutch sailor and my mother is from the South. We kids learned about Holland and the Florida Panhandle—faraway places to us—through stories our parents told on walks in the woods or sitting by the fire.”

Carla’s curiosity and vivid imagination are key to creating the complex relationships and deep sense of place in her books. At the core of every novel she writes is what Publishers Weekly has called her “flair for creating likable, believable characters and her keen recognition of the obstacles that can muddle relationships.”

Carla sold her first book not long after graduating magna cum laude from Boston University with a degree in journalism. An accomplished musician, she studied with members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and freelanced as an arts-and-entertainment reporter—always with a novel in the works. After the birth of her first child, Carla finally worked up the courage to submit a manuscript to an agent. “I would type with my daughter on the blotter next to me,” says Carla. “Then she learned to roll over, and I put her on a blanket on the floor!”

When she isn’t writing, Carla loves to read, travel, hike, garden and spend time with her large family. Get-togethers at her family’s tree farm on the western edge of the Quabbin Reservoir are a favorite. She and her husband, Joe, a native of middle Tennessee, have two grown children and two adorable grandchildren. They are frequent travelers to Ireland and divide their time between Boston and their hilltop home in Vermont, not far from picturesque Quechee Gorge.

Priceless by Raine Miller…Release Day Event

Ivan Everley, 13th Baron Rothvale, would admit he’s the last person on
earth who should have custody over a priceless collection of art. British law
affords him the title of ‘Lord,’ but underneath all the trappings he’s just a
regular guy, despite being a world champion in archery, and
certain…proclivities of a private nature. But Ivan’s public celebrity is
merely a sham–a carefully guarded secret borne out of the pain of betrayal.
Even his cousin Ethan Blackstone doesn’t know the truth behind the man he
considers a brother.

Lord Rothvale has a plethora of problems piled up to his aristocratic eyeballs,
but that doesn’t stop him from complicating his world further when a beautiful
art conservationist shows up to appraise his inherited collection of paintings.
Once Ivan gets a taste of Gabrielle Hargreave, mistaken
identity or not, he can’t think of anything but how good the green-eyed beauty
felt in his arms.

The chase is on, and Ivan’s dominant side isn’t taking ‘no’ for an answer–but
yet, Gabrielle might just teach our discontented lord a thing or two about
life, and about himself, and help them both discover the undeniable truth in
what it means to find something genuinely… priceless.

Raine Miller has
been reading romance novels since she picked up that first Barbara Cartland
book at the tender age of thirteen. And it’s a safe bet she’ll never stop,
because now she writes them too! Granted Raine’s stories are edgy enough to
turn Ms. Cartland in her grave, but to her way of thinking, a hot, sexy hero
never goes out of fashion. A former teacher, she’s now writing sexy romance
stories full time. She has a handsome prince of a husband, and two brilliant
sons to pull her back into the real world if the writing takes her too far
away. Her sons know she likes to write stories, but gratefully have never asked
to read any, thank God! Raine loves to hear from readers and to chat about the

Full Exposure by Sara Jane Stone…Review

full exposure cover

Synopsis:

No touching allowed . . .

After serving her country, Georgia Trulane craves adventure–and sex. She’s set her sights on her brother’s best friend–now her boss, since she took a temporary job as his nephew’s live-in nanny. Only problem? Eric refuses to touch her. That doesn’t stop Georgia from seducing him. But an earth-shattering encounter leaves her fully exposed, body and soul.

Eric has a long list of reasons to steer clear of the woman he has wanted for as long as he can remember. For one, he refuses to be her next thrill ride. When he claims her, it will be for good. But the attraction is undeniable, and the more they fight it, the stronger it pulls. But will it be enough to conquer their obstacles?

My review:

Full Exposure is the first book in author Sara Jane Stone’s Independence Falls Series and is the first of her work that I have read. Well, I’m hooked and am anxiously awaiting the next in this series. This book was fantastic!

Veteran Georgia is home now and is silently struggling with the experiences from her time overseas at war. She has found a few things that work to keep the nightmares at bay…sleeping as little as she can manage, jumping from one adrenaline rush to the next, and Eric. Eric, her brother’s long-time best friend, her as-long-as-she-can-remember crush, and currently her boss. Eric now had custody of his nephew and she was the new nanny, which gave her daily, up close and personal time with him and was driving her crush into whole new level. If surviving war had taught her one thing it was that life could end in an instant and that you should go after what you want in life. It’s that lesson that made up her mind to go after Eric. Now the question was, what would reaction be?

Logging company owner Eric has had a whole lot on his plate the past few months and the one person who had become a reliable constant was Georgia. He was so happy she was home safe and now under his roof, helping him with his nephew. Of course all of that was making his attraction to her hard to ignore. But he knew there were a million and one reasons why he needed to stay away from Georgia. For one, his best friend and her brother, would kill him. Unfortunately, he has to push all of that aside when a fire starts on his mountain and threatens not only an entire town, but the future of his logging business.

The odds seem to sway back and forth between favorable and unfavorable for Eric and Georgia. Just when we think they will be able to face their mutual attraction something gets thrown in the way. The push and pull between them starts off immediately and oh my, the heat building was fantastic to read.

Georgia’s demons are numerous and trying to deal with her PTSD alone is a perilous situation. She is one hell of an admirable character to read and I really felt for her. It was actually a bit of fresh air to read a female veteran and her struggle was touching. She is strong and capable and grabs on to life with both hands, prepared for the ride. Of course, that could also be a bad thing and she ends up worrying the people who matter most to her with her, sometimes, overzealous lust for life.

Eric is also a terrific character. He’s got broad shoulders and carries a whole lot on them. He’s loyal and caring and puts the happiness and well-being of others ahead of himself more often than not. He’s strong and sexy with a heat of gold. But he’s still a man and you know how men can be sometimes. Yep, he messes up a few times along the way but because he’s got that huge heart, he always more than makes up for it!

Together these two make one hell of a couple and I loved reading their journey from friends to lovers.

The added suspense with the mountain fire and trying to find what started it, and at some points wondering if it could have been Eric’s best employee, who also happened to be Georgia’s brother and his best friend, added an extra element to this story that I really enjoyed.  It was well done and kept the reader guessing until almost the very end.  I love that in a story!

Thank you, Sara Jane, for an amazing story. I cannot wait for the next installment!

My Control Synopsis:

Mark’s POV novella

I have lost the man I once was, letting guilt and heartache define who I am. Darkness has controlled me, and one woman has seen what no one else has seen in me, what I do not wish to exist. My hunger for her has driven me to the edge of sanity, but no more. She’s about to find out that the Master has returned.

Amazon | Barnes and Noble |My Control Goodreads

My review:

My Control is story number 4.1 in author Lisa Renee Jones’ Inside Out Series, is from Mark’s point of view and is leading us up to the final novel in the series, coming in November.

Mark Compton is slowly losing the only thing he has been able to relay on…his control. His control on everything from his role in the bedroom, his role as a Dom, to how he handled business. His control was his comfort. The investigation into the disappearance, and possible murder, of his submissive, Rebecca, has him unraveling faster than a weathered rope pulled too tight in a turbulent winter storm. The only thing keeping him even remotely grounded is Crystal….but the last thing he wants to allow himself is any kind of a relationship. No matter how much she pushed. No matter how much he wanted to admit she was right for him at this moment of need. There was too much happening and being tired of sitting by and just waiting for new of Rebecca, he knows it’s time to take matters into his own hands. Consequences be dammed. He would;t drag another woman he cared about into some sort of danger.

This was a great, intense, and quick read with a whole lot of emotion, and heat, packed into the pages and a great addition to the Inside Out Series. I’ll be looking forward to find out what happened to Rebecca, who is responsible, and what’s next for Mark and Crystal!

Thank you, Ms. Jones, for a great read!

Excerpt:

The bouncer lifted the velvet rope and ushered them into Splash. The bar had an aquatic theme. Parts of the floor were cut away and replaced with glass. Bolt noticed goldfish swimming under his feet. Lights flashed under coral and shells.
“You made it.” Eagle slapped him on the back. “This place is crazy, isn’t it?”
“Yeah.” Bolt looked around. “So where is this guy? Have you already grilled him? I don’t even know his name.” He looked past an aquarium that spanned the length of the bar. He thought there might be sharks swimming inside.
“Goes by Hammer. I don’t know his call sign story yet. He was just at the bar.” Eagle squinted. “Oh shit. He’s over there.” He pointed past the sharks to a high-top table.
“Why did you say ‘oh shit’?” Bolt followed his friend’s stare.
“Shit.”
Hollywood walked toward them. “What’s going on?”
“Over there.” Eagle nodded.
Hollywood shook his head. “Shit. What are you going to do, man?”
Bolt decided not to answer. He wasn’t prepared for the adrenaline that pumped through his body. It was possible the vein on the side of his neck was noticeably throbbing. He didn’t have a plan other than to walk toward the table. That, and undo everything from two weeks ago.
It was loud in Splash. He couldn’t hear what they were talking about, but the new guy was laying it on thick. It was obvious he was hitting on her, and Bolt hadn’t decided yet whether she liked it. He couldn’t see her eyes.
“So, are you trying to vet our pilot candidates now?” Bolt stood in between Skye and Hammer. He had to smile. She looked stunned.
“Wha—what are you doing here?” Skye stammered.
Hammer hung his head over his beer. It didn’t take introductions for him to know he had just stepped in the middle of something that could easily cost him the job interview.
“I’m here with the guys.” He nodded toward Hollywood, Eagle, and Ranger, who all raised a beer in their direction. “We’re interviewing a new candidate for the squadron. What about you?” He noticed she was wearing a suit, sort of like the one she had on the first night they met. He had to direct his eyes to look at her face and not wander.
She seemed flustered. “I’m here for work. My company did the opening night promotions for the bar. I’m here for moral support.” She smiled, letting the corners of her mouth turn higher.
“And you?” Bolt eyed the new guy.
“Hammer, sir.” He extended a hand.
Bolt shook it. “And you’re rushing the Rebels?”
“Yes, sir. I was just making conversation over here. That’s all, sir.”
Bolt chuckled. The kid was scared shitless. He couldn’t blame him. Skye was beautiful. Seeing her with someone else had made every muscle in his body tense and flex. He was glad he wasn’t going to have to punch the new guy.
“You know, if I were you, I’d be buying Hollywood and Eagle drinks. I think we’re good over here.” He glared at Hammer.
“Yes, sir. Got it, sir.” Hammer grabbed his beer and headed toward the other pilots without even saying good-bye to Skye.
“What was that all about?” She eyed Bolt.
“New guy. It’s my job to give him a hard time.” He smiled at her.
“You’re pretty good at giving a lot of people a hard time.” Her grin turned to straight-lined lips.
He didn’t have an apology prepared. In fact, he never planned on apologizing. He had always thought she was the one who blew the whole thing out of proportion until he saw Faith this afternoon. Seeing Skye again seemed to make the argument fade into the background. What was it Faith had just told him? He was happy Skye was standing next to him—her black suit and frown. Maybe there was a chance he could right all his wrongs.
“Yeah, about that. I’m sorry. I was a jerk.” He waited for her eyes to tell him if all was forgiven. “Can I buy you an apology drink?”
“Drinks are free tonight.” She held up something in a glass that was pink.
“Oh. Ok, how about dinner?” He thought he caught a glimmer of a smile.
“I already ate.”
“Hmm…what about dessert?”
She shook her head. “I don’t know.”
He edged closer so his arm brushed against hers. “Look, I know I was an ass the last time I saw you. But I can’t tell you how much of an ass, if you don’t at least give me a chance. One dessert.”
She chewed on her bottom lip. “One dessert?”
“Yep. Your choice.” He could see her weighing the pros and cons in her head. She was making him sweat it out.
“Hey, there you are!” A slender blonde sashayed next to Skye. “I was looking for you.” She stopped when she saw Bolt. “And who is this?”
He extended his hand over the table. “Ben. Nice to meet you.”
He saw recognition flash in her eyes. “Ben?” Skye must have talked about him. The good and the bad.
Skye nodded.
“Oh, well hi Ben. I’m Kari, Skye’s friend. We work together.”
“Nice to meet you. Maybe you can help me out. I’m trying to get Skye to go get dessert with me, but I really screwed up so she needs convincing.”
“Ha, she needs convincing about everything.” Kari winked.
“Kari, I can’t believe you just said that.” Skye elbowed her friend in the arm. “What about Dave? I’m supposed to meet him here tonight.” Bolt noticed the exchange between them was full of inside information.
“Just go. Have fun. You’ve done your part here. No one will even notice if you’re gone. I’ll call Dave now and tell him we’ll do it another time.”
Bolt wanted to ask who Dave was, but now wasn’t the time.
“I—I thought you might need me to stick around and help you with the promo swag.”
Kari sighed. “No, get out of here. I can do the rest.” She nudged Skye. “Bye, Ben. It was nice to meet you.”
He took his opportunity and wrapped an arm around Skye to steer her away from the table. “Bye, Kari. You too.” He winked as they rounded the shark tank.
“Whoa, whoa, whoa. Where in the hell do you think you’re going?” Hollywood stood in front of them. “Hi, Skye.”
She waved lightly. “Hi, Hollywood.”
“We’re headed out. The guy’s got my vote.” Bolt slapped Hollywood on the back. “I don’t need to have any other conversations with him. I’m fine with him.”
“But we’re getting ready to take shots.” Hollywood whined.
“Take one for me, man.” Bolt smiled and headed for the exit.
Outside, the line for Splash hadn’t shrunk. The new club had drawn a bigger crowd by the minute. Bolt threaded his fingers through Skye’s.
“And just like that you think you can sweep me off my feet?” Skye turned and studied his face.
He smiled. “Just like that.”

About IGNITED

He promised to take me as far as I could go—and I wanted to go to the edge.

My whole life has been a cover, a con, a lie. I was born into the grift, raised on the thrill of playing someone I’m not. As a rule, I never let anyone get too close—until Cole August makes it impossible for me to stay away.

Cole is tough, sexy, and intensely loyal, yet his secrets are dark and his scars run deep. Not many women can handle his past, or the truth behind his fierce demands. But something about him beckons me—and our desire is a game I must play.

I know he’s dangerous, that even his touch is trouble, but what is passion without a little risk?

Excerpt:

He let go, then moved to face me. I missed his touch, but the trade-off was worth it. I’m not the kind of girl who swoons over hunky firemen calendars and I’ve only seen Magic Mike once. But as far as eye candy went, Cole was a walking, talking Milky Way bar, and at least as tempting.

“Really,”he confirmed. An easy smile bloomed on his face, and he shook his head slowly, with obvious pleasure. “I didn’t realize that working as a barista required such honed salesmanship.”

“I’m a woman of many talents,”I said, then fluttered my lashes.

“Damn right you are.”He drew in a breath as he looked at me, and try as I might, I had no clue what he was thinking.

“That was quite the commission you just brought in,”he finally said. “I have a feeling you’ll be getting Christmas cards from Tiki for the rest of your life.”

“I look forward to it. What about you?”I asked boldly, and blamed it on the wine. I met his eyes, and fervently hoped that mine really were a window to the soul, because right then I wanted him to see straight inside me. “What will I get from you?”

“That depends on what you want.”

“Want,”I repeated. Where Cole was concerned, what didn’t I want?

“I told you earlier that you owed me,” he said. “Do you want to call us even?”

“Do you?”

He was silent for a moment, and then one moment longer. “No,”he finally said.

I lifted my chin. “Good.”

His expression remained perfectly stoic, but he lifted his hand toward my face, then dropped it, as if he were a child who’d caught himself about to do something naughty.

“It’s okay,”I said, my voice almost a whisper. “I won’t break.”

“Don’t be so sure, blondie. I’ve been known to destroy even the most resilient things.”

“I’m not a thing. And you won’t destroy me.”I hesitated only a second, then took one step closer. The difference was only inches, but the air seemed suddenly thicker, as if my lungs had to work harder to draw in oxygen. “It’s okay,”I said again.

All around us, the party continued, but I’m not sure either one of us was aware. Instead, it felt as if we’d stepped into a vortex, and at least in our little corner of space and time nothing else mattered or even existed.

I held my breath, wanting his touch so badly I could taste it. And when he finally brushed the side of his thumb over my cheekbone, it was all I could do not to moan aloud.

All too quickly he took his hand away, leaving me bereft.

All too quickly he stepped back, forcing the world around us to come back to life.

“I just had to see if I was right,”he said.

“About?”

“Your skin. It’s like touching a promise.”

“Is it?”I murmured.

“Tender,”he said. “And a bit mysterious. With layer upon layer just waiting to be discovered.”

My breath stuttered in my chest. “I didn’t know you thought that,”I said. “I didn’t know you thought about me at all.”

He was silent for so long I began to fear he wasn’t going to answer. When he spoke, his words cut through me, sharp and sweet. “I think about you more than I should.”

It was suddenly very warm in the gallery. Little beads of sweat gathered at the hairline on the back of my neck. I needed air, because it seemed as if all the oxygen had been sucked out of the room.

Somehow, miraculously, I formed words. “What are you thinking now?”

People I Want to Punch in the Throat: Competitive Crafters, Drop-Off Despots, and Other Suburban Scourges…ARC Review

Releases tomorrow, 9/9

PIWTPITT cover

Synopsis:

A debut collection of witty, biting essays laced with a surprising warmth, from Jen Mann, the writer behind the popular blog People I Want to Punch in the Throat

People I want to punch in the throat:
• anyone who feels the need to bling her washer and dryer
• humblebraggers
• people who treat their pets like children

Jen Mann doesn’t have a filter, which sometimes gets her in trouble with her neighbors, her fellow PTA moms, and that one woman who tried to sell her sex toys at a home shopping party. Known for her hilariously acerbic observations on her blog, People I Want to Punch in the Throat, Mann now brings her sharp wit to bear on suburban life, marriage, and motherhood in this laugh-out-loud collection of essays. From the politics of joining a play group, to the thrill of mothers’ night out at the gun range, to the rewards of your most meaningful relationship (the one you have with your cleaning lady), nothing is sacred or off-limits. So the next time you find yourself wearing fuzzy bunny pajamas in the school carpool line or accidentally stuck at a co-worker’s swingers party, just think, What would Jen Mann do? Or better yet, buy her book.

My review:

Ok, so I love Jen Mann. If you don’t know of her, or her laugh-so-hard-you-snort blog, People I Want To Punch In The Throat, then I am here to introduce you to some of the funniest and most real parent and life posts you will ever read. No really. And if you do know of her, high-five!

Her newest book, People I Want To Punch In The Throat: Competitive Crafters, Drop-Off Despots, and Other Suburban Scourges, touches on all of the joyous *heavy on the sarcasm* wonders of being a suburban mom in the prim and proper Pinterest age….and it is one of the funniest books I’ve ever read.

Question: Have you ever left your house in pj’s to drop a kid off thinking no one will ever see those pj’s, only to find out you HAVE to get out of the car and parade your pj clad self into the school?

-OR- Had to suffer through a playdate chatting it up with a mom who, under any other circumstances, you would never want to associate with for even one tenth of a nanosecond, but because your kids are friends and you HAVE to stay through the playdate you’e stuck with said parent?

-OR- How about dealing with those obsessive parents, living vicariously through their kids to make up for all that lacked in their own childhood?  They are gems….

I see you nodding after reading those questions and that’s exactly why you need this book. Not only does Jen write her completely relatable experiences, but she writes with such snarky comedy genius that you can’t NOT laugh. I mean I annoyed the hell out of my poor husband while reading this because I would be reading, start laughing, shove the book under his nose and say: “read this! It’s just like *censored to save face with my friends and neighbors*!”. And guess what? He thought it was hilarious, too!

But aside from the hilarity of this book, is that fact that Jen puts it all in perspective. Life, kids, parenting, suburban society, the pressures of raising kids in an age where Pinterest makes you feel like a slacker every time you log on…. all of it. She makes us realize we aren’t alone in this craziness and that it’s ok to take life with a grain of salt. It’s ok to not want to suffer through a play date or not want to spend 6 months crafting dat and night for a kid’s birthday party. It’s ok to head out without makeup on and in your bunny pj’s. It’s ok to want to punch people in the throat!

So while this book is a break from my normal genres, I will always pick up a book written by Jen because she reminds us that life isn’t perfect and you may as well have a good laugh along the way! Thanks Jen, you freaking rock and I love ya lots!
