You know that movie where the devastatingly handsome billionaire falls head over heels for the former rent-boy with a heart of gold and they ride off into the sunset with their limo, their unicorn collection, and a cuddly little Bichon Frise?

Okay, me neither.

Nobody’s ever gonna make that movie, because nobody would buy the premise. Not even if Julia Roberts does make the prospect look all kinds of glittery-ever-after on camera. And for real, I’m telling you I could rock a string of diamonds just as well as her (I could!), even if you wouldn’t catch me dead in an evening gown. Or doing a douche who drives a five-speed penis-mobile.

Well…maybe it would depend on the penis-mobile.

God bless Richard Gere’s fine ass in a three-piece, though. I may have a rule against dating a guy like the one he plays in Pretty Woman, but there’s nothing wrong with a little fantasy. Like a big ol’ slab of red velvet cake, it may not be healthy for you to eat, but looking doesn’t cost any calories.

Rule #1: Watch out for rich guys in business attire. They’re sleek, gorgeous, and powerful looking, like jungle cats, and as likely to take a chunk out of you when your back is turned.

Eight-twenty A.M. and I already need an effing shower. Ugh. Running late for an eight-thirty A.M. meeting. I thought a cab ride would be the answer and certainly cooler and quicker than walking, or God forbid, taking the dreaded subway on a sweltering Manhattan morning. But no. I emerge from the cab, with my now translucent white silk blouse pretending it’s a soggy second skin gearing up for our fabulous win in today’s “Who’s Got the Perkiest Nipples” contest. Shoot me. Just shoot me.

As I slide sideways into an elevator, the doors already half closed, I have the distinct honor of joining two techy nerd boys returning from their eight-fifteen A.M. smoke. Lucky me. The unkempt duo reek of cigarettes, yet I can’t decide which is worse, that, or the stench of their general shoddy hygiene and filthy jeans. Nerd Boy #1 is enjoying my transparent, wet tank blouse and my not-shy nipples. I catch him and he pretends to look at my necklace, a gold mermaid, just grazing my cleavage.

The door opens on my floor. Eight twenty-six. I’m not late yet. On my way out of the elevator, I lean over and whisper to Nerd Boy #1, “Great necklace, isn’t it. Would be better if it were pearl.”

I hear him choke as I exit. Schwing.

Review

“One little Maraschino cherry represented so much more.”

Slave to Love will make your insides bubble up with giddiness and happiness. You can’t help but smile throughout the majority of this book. I found myself laughing out loud many times from the banter between the characters. And I absolutely loved the background on the whole story – quite interesting.

“You’ve set the benchmark and you’ve set it high.”

Once you meet Sierra, you will fall in love with her. She is sassy, smart, witty and a very strong woman. She’s worked her way up the corporate ladder and she’s not about to put her morals to the side just to move up further.

Hale is WOW. I don’t even know where to start. He comes across at first as the typical male with a huge ego. But we quickly get to see a side of him that he truly surprises even himself. Sierra is this man’s kryptonite.

“You scare me more than having a gun pointed at my head, close range, although you both hold the power to stop my heart.”

I loved watching these two build a very strong working relationship that buds into something more over time. The flow of this story is absolutely perfect. It’s the perfect buildup. There are a few bumps in the road but what relationship isn’t without it’s ups and downs.

Julie’s writing always pulls me into the story and makes me feel everything. And now just from the main characters but also the secondary characters. You get a sense of their protection over their friends. As I said before, I found myself laughing quite a few times throughout this book. I really enjoyed the humorous and comical ribbing between everyone.

“No mistake, Hale. I’m walking out with my dignity.”

Julie wrote another beautiful love story. Not only will fall you in love with the story, but you will fall in love with these characters. I am hoping that we get to read a few more stories from some stand out secondary characters.

I’m really not quite sure what to do with her. She’s not like the women I date. She’s not like the women I fuck. Yeah, I have women in my company, just not in my inner circle. So, I’m not sure how to balance having a close work confidante that I want to bang. So damn bad.

Would it be a bad thing to keep her in the conference room after dismissing the rest of the team, lock the doors, pick her up and seat her on the edge of the conference room table. Feel her melt into my hand as I run my fingertips down the front of her silk tank top. When she shivers, twist her taunting nipples until they harden, then stop and listen to her moan. Would that lost animal sound be coming from what I was doing to her or because I stopped? I wouldn’t wait to find out as I pushed her underwear aside, and harden even more, the moment I feel her wetness. Using her slick juices to moisten her clit, I’d finger her until she is gasping for air and reaching for me. I’d let just her nails and the tips of her finger graze my hard cock as I hang just out of reach. I would totally get off knowing that it is her need to grab me, making her wilder, and that crazed instinctual desire in her eyes would have me titanium hard. I need to be buried deep inside her.

I know my face is portraying a practiced and perfected look of deep concentration when my VP of Product Development asks for the second time, “Can we get the go-ahead on that, Hale?”

Shaking my head and drawing my brows together, “Give me your full brief in writing.” I act as if there’s something bothering me in what he presented, when in actuality I’m just buying time because I didn’t hear a word he said.

I’m so excited to be returning to one of my favorite events this March: the Liberty States Fiction Writers Create Something Magical Conference in New Jersey. It’s a wonderful event that I enjoy each year and highly recommend attending. I am honored this year to be hosting an interview each week with the attending speakers! What made you want to become a writer?
I don’t know that it was a conscious decision. I’ve been writing since I learned how. Still have the very first story I wrote in first grade about being a raindrop who fell from the sky with her friends—written on a big piece of yellow paper that had the dashed lines on the bottom and a big open space on the top for illustrations. Hmmm, maybe I should have been an artist too.

Is there one piece of advice you would give an aspiring writer?

Read. Read some more. Keep reading. You can pick up on the nuances of story-telling by “seeing” storytellers at work.

If you could co-write a book with any author, dead or alive, who would it be?
James Patterson. I want in on that franchise/exposure.

Who is on your bookshelf?

Can you tell us about one of the most memorable moments in your writing career thus far?
Absolutely. I was at an RT Convention and my first series was out. I was standing in the lobby talking to a friend of mine and all of a sudden, I hear from the opposite side of the very large (atrium) lobby, “Oh my God, it’s Judi Fennell!” and this woman comes running across with her arms outstretched and gives me the biggest hug, crying that she’s so thrilled to meet me. My rock star moment.

Tell us about your newest release/current work in progress:
Geez, which one? LOL. I’m almost finished Manley Maids #5 (What A Guy Wants), am writing the next two Mer books almost simultaneously (Marianna’s and Pearl’s stories), have started the next BeefCake, Inc. book and have a romantic suspense idea germinating in my brain. A typical day in the life of a writer.

About Judi:

I have been writing for as long as I can remember, winning my first writing award in a second grade Caldecott Medal contest. Readers’ Digest gave me my very first publishing credit in April, 1994, and I was hooked. I seemed to have followed writing contests around, being a finalist in such online contests as American Title III, sponsored by Romantic Times BOOKreview Magazine and Dorchester Publishing, and two First Chapters contests, sponsored by Gather.com and Simon & Schuster/Pocket Books.

My imaginary friend was Casper the Friendly Ghost. The little ghoul even had a special place set for him at our dinner table and got blamed for many of my childhood mishaps. I grew up watching Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannieand The Addams Family–my mom looked like Elizabeth Montgomery and I had a special Barbie outfit that looked like Morticia Addams’ dress. My favorite books are Bewitching by Jill Barnett and A Knight In Shining Armor, by Jude Devereaux, so it should come as no surprise that I like to write tongue-in-cheek lighthearted paranormals and contemporaries.

I love pop culture and manipulating language, so you’ll find lots of puns, double entrendre, plays-on-words, alliteration, clichés, and twisting of phrases, as well as several one-liners in my stories that give me a few chuckles. I studied Spanish at Penn State (Go Lions!), lived in Spain, and traveled throughout that beautiful country.

I’ve always written and still have my journal from fourth grade where, even then, my stories were full of fantastical creatures, whimsy, and magic. I wrote my first romance in 9th grade and still have that story in my memory chest. Even back then I dreamed of being a writer.

Now with kids, a house, a social life (Go Survivor Girls!), a menagerie of four-legged babies, I get to live my dream of being a writer!

Nick Brennan’s boots sounded off against the neat stretch of pavement in front of his apartment, and he inhaled a deep breath full of frozen air and screaming back pain. He’d learned to cope with an extended and somewhat brutal version of winter upon moving to Pine Mountain two years ago.

The pain was a little more difficult to swallow, but then again, the snap, crackle, and pop running the length of his spine was more rule than exception. After a little over two years, Brennan had learned to suck it up and lock it away.

After all, there were worse things than blowing out a couple of vertebrae. Not to mention worse ways to deal with the pain.

Brennan stuffed back the thought, popping the locks on his Chevy Trailblazer and sliding into the well-worn driver’s seat. The Double Shot’s staff schedules weren’t going to write themselves, no matter how much his back creaked like a hundred-year-old staircase, and he needed to get to work, stat. Brennan might’ve closed the bar last night, and yeah, the four before it too, but his friends Adrian and Teagan needed all the help they could get.

With business booming under the new management of the burly head chef and the owner’s daughter, busy shifts were a foregone conclusion, especially around the holidays. Not that Brennan minded. All that work kept him moving forward, and that was a good thing. Because going back?

Not an option.

The handful of country miles between his apartment complex and the small-town bar and grill started flashing by in a late-morning slide show of snowy pine trees and mountain backdrops, and Brennan cracked his window to take another deep breath despite the December chill in the air. Dwelling on the past and the physical pain that went with it only spelled trouble, and he forced the muscles in his shoulders and back to unwind as he slid more air into his lungs.

until he could know for sure that the darkness within him wouldn’t touch Hailey, he had to hold himself back. He’d known he was playing with fire by waiting, by watching for years and never doing more. But she’d held back, too. She’d known it wasn’t the right time yet.

The letter smelled like her.

Like rain.

He ran his thumb over the corner of the paper, and closed his eyes briefly. Memories rose to the surface, feeling like hope and possibility.

Q: What did you choose to set your book in Jackson Hole, Wyoming?

A: I love the Jackson Hole, Wyoming area, the Grand Tetons National Park is about 12 miles north of the cow town. And about 40 miles further north is Yellowstone National Park. I simply love the clean, fresh air, the gorgeous Teton Mountains, the incredible wildlife that you can photograph just from your car. It’s an exciting area for me and I wanted to infuse my readers with it, as well.

Q: What are some of your guilty pleasures?

A: Looking forward to the one chocolate I can eat a day. Sitting so much of the time to write makes for easy weight gain. I love chocolate, but I won’t indulge in more than one a day. It’s something I usually look forward to mid-afternoon after finishing my scene or chapter for the day.
