From the bestselling author of Bad Romance (“A sexy, emotional, steamy read.”—Addison Moore) comes an edgy novel about a reformed bad boy training to be a priest and the fallen angel who makes him think twice about giving up earthly pleasures.

Growing up hard and fast on the mean streets of Chicago, Thorn McKinney didn’t have a prayer—until tragedy inspired him to join the seminary. And now he finds himself torn between duty and desire, entranced by the seductive pull of her trusting eyes, innocent heart, and sinfully sweet curves.

Trying to let Thorn pursue his calling, Rose Gallagher has been hiding some things: namely her abusive boyfriend and her job as a stripper. But when she hits rock bottom, Thorn is there for her—and now there’s no denying the raw temptation that draws them together in their darkest moments. Midnight in Berlin by James MacManus..Blog Tour Stop and Author Q&A

MIDNIGHTINBERLIN_cover image

Midnight in Berlin, by James MacManus a summary

This is a historical novel which tells a story of love and betrayal in the dark heart of Berlin on the eve of the Second World War. The book is based on the true story of the plan by a British diplomat to assassinate Hitler in March 1939.

Colonel Noel Macrae, a decorated veteran and an excellent shot, arrives in Berlin as military attaché at the British embassy in 1938. He quickly realises what western governments refused to accept; that Hitler is bent on war and that the West’s appeasement policy, always a failure, had now become an actual incentive for conflict.

Macrae argues that only pre-emptive action against the Nazi regime can forestall a new European war. In a breath-taking departure from the moral and diplomatic code of the day, he proposes to assassinate Hitler on his 50th birthday, April 20th 1939. Macrae’s apartment is only 100 metres from the reviewing stand in central Berlin where Hitler takes the salute on his birthday. It would be an easy shot.

The novel recounts the British government’s rejection of the plan because “it would not be sportsmanlike behaviour.” The Gestapo’s aware only of Macrae’s hostility attempts to compromise the military attaché and force his dismissal. The secret police runs a brothel in Berlin disguised as a smart restaurant called the Salon Kitty.

The leading lady is Jewish, Sara Sternschein, personally chosen for her role by the satanic Gestapo chief, Reinhard Heydrich. The use of a Jewish courtesan greatly increases the Gestapo’s powers of blackmail. Macrae is taken to the Salon Kitty under false pretences one night, meets Sara and the two begin an affair.

As the world moves towards war in the spring of 1939, the novel tracks the blind diplomacy of West, the unfolding affair between Macrae and Sternschein and the attaché’s final desperate attempt to defy his government kill the German Fuhrer in order to avert a global conflict.

Who Was Colonel Macrae?

The character is based on the actual British military attaché in Berlin in 1938-39, Colonel Noel Mason-MacFarlane. He did indeed propose the assassination of Hitler and argued that in the aftermath the Nazi regime would be swept from power by a military coup. The proposal went as high as the Foreign Secretary, Lord Halifax who said, in March 1939:”We have not yet reached a stage in our relations with Germany when we need to substitute assassination for diplomacy.”

As a result Mason-Macfarlane was removed from Berlin and sent back to a desk job in England. He died in 1953 at the early age of 63.

Who was William Shirer?

With Ed Murrow, Shirer was one of the most famous US correspondents of the WW2 era. He was CBS European Bureau Chief based in Berlin in the late 1930s and reported on the rise of Nazi Germany. He stayed in Berlin when war broke out and   followed German armies in their blitzkrieg across the Holland, Belgium and France in the summer of 1940. Censorship and the attentions of the Gestapo forced him to leave Germany at the end of 1940.

Ed Murrow was both a mentor and friend to Shirer but the two men fell out after the war in a broadcasting dispute which resulted in Shirer leaving CBS. As a journalist, Shirer’s reputation rests on his pre-war reporting from Berlin but as an author he is better known for his best-selling and widely praised book, The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, published in 1960.Shirer died in 1993 aged 89.

Why is World War 2 so intriguing for a novelist?

Firstly because of the colossal characters involved: Hitler, Churchill, Roosevelt and Stalin painted in vivid colours on a global canvas and changed the history of the 20th century. Those leaders cast long shadows and we feel their presence still. Think what Shakespeare would have done with such men. Secondly, the privations and horrors of wartime allow writers to strip characters to their essence revealing their real emotions at times of danger, sadness or joy.

Thirdly, there is a continuing public fascination with the period; the horrors of Nazi Germany, the insane delusions of Hitler, the ghastly fate of the Jews and other victims amount to a purity of evil which we find impossible to fully understand and for that reason strangely compelling.

Then there is the righteous heroism of the allied forces, principally British and American, whose courage and endurance won the war for the forces of freedom. That is a great morality tale with a strong narrative that conveys a very powerful message. Readers and listeners from the dawn of storytelling like to be told that good does triumph over evil, however fierce the battle.

DIRTIEST SECRET

J Kenner

Release Day April 19

From the New York Times bestselling author of such “racy, sizzling Stark novels” (RT Book Reviews) as Release Me and Say My Name comes the provocative first Stark International Novel—the beginning of the S.I.N. series.

It was wrong for us to be together, but it was even harder to be apart.

The memory of Dallas Sykes burns inside of me.

Everyone knows him as a notorious playboy, a man for whom women and money are no object. But to me, he’s still the one man I desperately crave—yet the one I can never have.

Dallas knows me better than anyone else. We bear the same scars, the same darkness in our past. I thought I could move on by staying away, but now that we’re drawn together once more, I can’t fight the force of our attraction or the temptation to make him mine.

We’ve tried to maintain control, not letting ourselves give in to desire. And for so long we’ve told ourselves no—but now it’s finally time to say yes.

REVIEW

Dirtiest Secret is definitely not what I was expecting.  I have to say this was my first book involving this sort of taboo, cause well normally I wouldn’t pick it up knowing what it was about.   However, with that being said, I am glad that I didn’t know because I actually enjoyed the plot of this book.

I do not think that this whole plot would work if not for the taboo.  Yes – Dallas and Jane were kidnapped as teens and thankfully rescued.  However, their “relationship” is also what adds to the dirtiness of this book.

“And, yes, to curse the fact that the girl he wanted – the girl he loved – was the one he couldn’t have.”

Dallas and Jane are both trying to move forward with their lives.  They are using their past to help other families who find themselves in the unfortunate situation of a child being kidnapped.  However, they both have different views on how to help these families.

Jane doesn’t believe that vigilante groups help families rescue the children.  She feels they are in it just for the money.  Dallas is the owner of such a group but could care less about the money.  He started the group to find out who was behind their kidnappings but in the process has also become a company that people call upon to help find their children.

Will Jane and Dallas be able overcome their taboo love?  Or can they just walk away from each other?  And what happens when Jane finds out what it exactly is that Dallas does in secret?  These two have so much against them.  So many secrets between them.  But can love truly win once it’s all laid out there?

“Apart, they were safe.  Together, they were combustible.”

I truly enjoyed this book.  Yes, the taboo love has me a bit conflicted but like I said earlier, without it, this book wouldn’t be as intense and dirty without.  I am intrigued to see if I am correct on who I believe is behind their abduction as kids (I figured this out at about the 50% mark).  But that’s ok – I am more interested in how everything comes to light and what happens once all the secrets are revealed.

I am looking forward to what Julie brings us in the next book.

EXCERPT:

Even by Southampton standards, the party at the nine-thousand-square-foot mansion on Meadow Lane reeked of extravagance.

Grammy Award–winning artists performed on an outdoor stage that had been set up on the lush lawn that flowed from the main house to the tennis courts. Celebrities hobnobbed with models who flirted with Wall Street tycoons who discussed stock prices with tech gurus and old-money academics, all while sampling fine scotch and the season’s chicest gin. Colored lights illuminated the grotto style pool, upon which nude models floated lazily on air mattresses, their bodies used by artisan sushi chefs as presentation platters for epicurean delights.

Each female guest received a Hermès Birkin bag and each male received a limited edition Hublot watch, and the exclamations of delight—from both the men and the women—rivaled the boom of the fireworks that exploded over Shinnecock Bay at precisely ten p.m., perfectly timed to distract the guests from the bustle of the staff switching out the dinner buffet for the spread of desserts, coffee, and liqueurs.

No expense had been spared, no desire or craving or indulgence overlooked. Nothing had been left to chance, and every person in attendance agreed that the party was the Must Attend event of the season, if not of the year. Hell, if not of the decade.

Everyone who was anyone was there, under the stars on the four acre lot on Billionaires’ Row.

Everyone, that is, except the billionaire who was actually hosting the party. And speculation as to where he was, what he was doing, and who he was doing it with ripped through the well-liquored and gossip-hungry crowd like wildfire in a windstorm.

“No idea where he could have disappeared off to, but I’d bet good money he’s not pining away in solitude,” said a reed-thin man with salt-and-pepper hair and an expression that suggested disapproval but was most likely envy.

“I swear I came five times,” a perky blonde announced to her best friend in the kind of stage whisper designed to attract attention. “The man’s a master in bed.”

“He’s got a shrewd head for business, that one,” said a Wall Street trader, “but no sense of propriety where his cock is concerned.”

“Oh, honey, no. He’s not relationship material.” A brunette celebrating a recently inked modeling contract shivered as if reliving a moment of ecstasy. “He’s like fine chocolate. Meant to be savored in very limited quantities. But so damn good when you have it.”

“More power to him if he can grab that much pussy.” A hipster with beard stubble and a man-bun wiped his wire-rimmed glasses clean with his shirttail. “But why the fuck does he have to be so blatant about it?”

“All of my friends have had him.” The petite redhead who pulled in a six figure wife bonus smiled slowly, and the flash of her green eyes suggested that she was the cat and he was the delicious cream. “But I’m the only one of us to enjoy a second helping.”

“All your friends?”

“How much pussy?”

“At least half the women here tonight. Maybe more.”

“Man, don’t even ask that. Just trust me. Dallas Sykes is the King of Fuck. You and me? Mere mortals like us can’t even compare.”

the argument teaser 3

From the New York Times Bestseller Pepper Winters comes a snarky standalone full of romance.

They say the key to a good relationship is one with no drama.

They say you’re not trying hard enough or married the wrong person if you fight.

Sorry, but I call bulls***.

I’ve had plenty of relationships: some sweet, some happy, most an utter failure.

Until I met Harriet.

Our first conversation was an argument.

Our second conversation was an argument.

Our entire connection was based on…yep, an argument.

We tore up the rules of chance encounters and polite first meeting etiquette. And after the week I’d had, I was ready for a punch-up.

Hell, I craved one.

And Harriet was there to antagonise me.

The first time we met, we spent every hour from dusk to dawn, arguing.

And when the sun rose, neither of us wanted to stop.

Because there was something so refreshing about being honest. Saying exactly what you thought. Picking faults just because you itched to fight.

It was only supposed to be one night. A night where the town was our battlefield, the clubs a microphone to our bickering, and the stars a listener to our squabbles.

Only…I wasn’t ready to say goodbye.

You see, arguing turned out to be the best damn thing I’d ever experienced.

So, instead of agreeing to the terms we’d set, I revoked them. I went home with her. I refused to leave. And our argument turned into something so much more than a random quarrel.

It turned into war and our love wasn’t sweet…it was hostile.

Excerpt:

He was either falling deeper into her web or she was getting closer to him. It didn’t matter tonight. Tonight, all that mattered was she was here.

“So, how are you really feeling? Will told me I should give you something if your muscles start to ache.” It was the only damn reason he hadn’t attacked her in the shower. Sometimes it took a few hours for the pain to set in. He didn’t want to give her more. He could wait.

Her hand went to his thigh as she moved slightly away from him so she could look at his face. “I feel great. I feel better than great. I am tired though. Long day. Maybe we should turn in.” She frowned. “I don’t have a toothbrush.”

Oh, she of little faith. “I had one delivered along with the prescriptions Will called in for you if you need them. One’s for pain and the other is an anti-inflammatory.”

“I don’t need them.” She sat back and it was the first time since the shower that she hadn’t been touching him. “Where do you want me to sleep?”

“You can take my bedroom.” He probably wouldn’t sleep at all. He would sit out here and work. It was what he usually did at night. He would sit in his perch high above the city and work until it was almost dawn. “The bed is very comfortable.”

“But you won’t be in it.”

This was the moment he’d been waiting for, kind of dreading and desperately anticipating all at the same time. “Not if I think I could hurt you.”

She huffed a little and stood up. “I’ll be back.”

He reached out and gripped her wrist. “Where do you think you’re going?”

“To find a doctor who will write me a note so you’ll have sex with me.”

He couldn’t help but smile at that. She was pouting like a kid who’d lost her favorite toy. This was why he’d pushed her to cry in the shower. He needed this Amy back. His Amy. He’d hated how polite and courteous she’d been when they’d been in public. Oh, she’d allowed him to handle some things, but her smile hadn’t reached her eyes and not a single sarcastic remark had passed those luscious lips of hers. It was wrong and counter to everything he’d come to know about her.

This Amy boldly told him what she wanted and was willing to do whatever it took to get it.

This Amy wanted him.

 Excerpt

Ryder sat back and blew out a breath, feeling a flutter of nerves. He laced his fingers behind his head and only realized then that Dmitri was still in the room. He slid his gaze to Dmitri.

“What are you up to?” Dmitri asked. “You know that lass. I could see it on your face. If you have Tristan bring her up here, you’ll feel Con’s wrath.”

Ryder dropped his hands to the arms of his chair. “That occurs all the time, and I do know Kinsey. I’m no’ yet sure why she’s here. But I aim to find out.”

“Meaning?” Dmitri urged.

“We were lovers three years ago. Until I realized that I’d fallen in love with her. I didna want anyone to know that our spell preventing us from feeling deeply for humans no longer worked with me.”

Dmitri leaned forward, his brow furrowed deeply. “That was around the time Hal fell in love with Cassie.”

“Cassie arrived at Dreagan right after I returned from Glasgow.”

“All right,” Dmitri said as he rubbed his jaw. “So you fell in love before Hal. No’ a big deal.”

Ryder lifted one shoulder in a shrug. “I suppose no’. No’ compared to her seeing me in dragon form a few weeks ago when I was in Glasgow to protect the city from the Dark invasion.”

“Oh, fuck.”

Anger crackled through him every time he thought about how close Kinsey came to dying that night. If Ryder hadn’t been there, she would’ve been taken by the Dark, her soul drained. “There was a Dark after her. I shifted into human form to help her. Unfortunately, she saw it all.”

“And?” Dmitri pressed with a brown brow raised.

Ryder looked at the screens, following Kinsey from one to the other as Tristan walked her to the manor. “I’ve never seen anyone so terrified before.”

“Of the Dark?”

Ryder wished. That night still haunted him. No matter how many times he thought over what happened, there hadn’t been another way to save her. “Of me. I can still hear her scream before she ran away.”

“So she doesna know you’re here?”

“I doona believe so. She’d rather walk through the fires of Hell than be anywhere near me.”

Dmitri sat there for a moment before he gave a slow shake of his head. “You’re having Tristan bring her to you, are you no’?”

“I am.”

“That . . . could be a bad move.”

“It probably is.” In more ways than one.

Subject X by Emma Hunter…Review

BLURB

Recent Harvard graduate Charlotte Kane tends to be the most practical person in the room. A self-proclaimed nerd and former tomboy, Charlotte still isn’t used to the world’s reaction to her since she traded in her sweatpants and hoodies for skinny jeans and sundresses. And she’s just begun to settle into her new job as a research assistant at a prestigious biotech powerhouse, Philadelphia’s Genesis Life Systems, when Owen Becker walks into the subject waiting room.

Owen Becker is pure, distilled masculinity. He’s also been the subject of a shadowy Genesis research study for twenty-seven years—a classified one now run solely by Charlotte’s prickly and secretive boss. With just one glance at Charlotte Kane, Owen knows he has to have her. But he fears that the secret behind his study might be too much for the new researcher to understand—and far too dangerous for her or anyone else to know about.

When a chance accident on their second date reveals something unbelievable about Owen Becker, Charlotte’s world is turned entirely upside-down. As she struggles to reconcile what she’s learned about her irresistible new boyfriend with everything she knows to be true about science and the world she lives in, her lingering dislike of her new boss shifts into something more like suspicion. Determining that he’s up to something dark—and that Owen is at the center of that something—Charlotte is forced to test the limits of what she’s willing to do for love and lust.

review

I have to say, Emma Hunter rocks it with her debut book, Subject X.

When I read the blurb, I was definitely intrigued to see how this would play out. Some have marked this as a paranormal book, but it’s definitely not. This is definitely more Sci-Fi/Fantasy and it’s quite interesting.

Owen is a subject at Genesis where Charlotte just started working as a research assistant. Owen is quite unique – he has a gift. Only two people know about it…until Charlotte.

Will she be able to see past this? Will she be scared and run? What happens in their relationship?

The instant attraction is obvious to both Owen and Charlotte. Their relationship does move at a faster pace and Charlotte finds herself questioning a lot of what she is doing. But at the same time, she finds it hard saying no to Owen. And Owen finds it hard to keep himself away from Charlotte. Neither can explain the electricity they feel but they aren’t going to deny it either.

As things heat up quickly between Owen and Charlotte, things at Genesis are also getting sticky and more uneasy. Charlottes’ boss is acting more on edge and not himself.

Does Charlotte chance putting her job at risk to see exactly what her boss is up to? Or does she let things lie and chance her relationship with Owen?

What I love about this book is that there are so many variables in play. It’s not just about the romance, but about the science behind everything. I was highly pulled into the whole plot and kept wanting to know what was going to happen and what the outcome would be.

I have to say, I was not expecting that ending. I actually had chills go up my body with that ending. I am definitely hoping we don’t have to wait long for the next book in this series.

All in all – great debut by Emma Hunter.

BLURB:
It finally happened, I lost my virginity. Cue applause and cheers.

For a while life was all rainbows and kittens prancing in a sky full of cotton candy clouds…that was until the demands of the real world set in.

My best friend is getting married and she asked me to be her maid of honor. She’s not worried about flowers, or the dress, or the food at the venue. No, she’s worried about the bachelorette party, what kind of penis crown she will wear, and the nipple size of the stripper who will be attending.

I’m in way over my head trying to balance life with a boyfriend, planning a penis party, and writing my romance novel. Something is bound to give.

This is my life after my happily ever after…

Her bosom heaved at an alarming rate as his rough hand found its way down to her soft, yet wiry briar patch…

Can you say briar patch in a romance novel? What about meat sword? That’s what it is…a meat sword, right, all meaty and sword like, slaying through the inner dungeons of a woman’s dark desires. What about breasts? Do bosoms really heave?

God, I have no idea what happens when private parts touch.

I’m a virgin trying to write a romance novel and can’t seem to write past a sex scene thanks to my lack of experience.

My two best friends encourage me to drop the pen for a while and gain some real life practice through multiple dating facets such as blind dates, online profiles, and random hookups.

But losing my virginity is proving to be tougher than expected…

About the Author:
Born in New York and raised in Southern California, Meghan has grown into a sassy, peanut butter eating, blonde haired swearing, animal hoarding lady. She is known to bust out and dance if “It’s Raining Men” starts beating through the air and heaven forbid you get a margarita in her, protect your legs because they may be humped.
Once she started commuting for an hour and twenty minutes every day to work for three years, she began to have conversations play in her head, real life, deep male voices and dainty lady coos kind of conversations. Perturbed and confused, she decided to either see a therapist about the hot and steamy voices running through her head or start writing them down. She decided to go with the cheaper option and started writing… enter her first novel, Caught Looking.
Now you can find the spicy, most definitely on the border of lunacy, kind of crazy lady residing in Colorado with the love of her life and her five, furry four legged children, hiking a trail or hiding behind shelves at grocery stores, wondering what kind of lube the nervous stranger will bring home to his wife. Oh and she loves a good boob squeeze!

Claimed by the Warrior by Eliza Knight…Spotlight & Excerpt

Claimed by the Warrior
The Conquered Bride Series
Book 3
Releasing 3/31/16
He came to conquer…
A widower, Laird Torsten Mackenzie, has worked long and hard to regain the respect his clan deserved after his older brother turned traitorous. Even in death, Cathal’s  crimes remain a mar on Torsten’s conscience. Setting aside his grief, Torsten devotes his life to his people, and to his young, motherless daughter. When a rival clan attacks his lands unprovoked, he’s determined to put them in their place once and for all. Marching on their gates, he’s taken by surprise when Lady MacDonell steps through the opening instead of her wayward husband. Reacting impulsively, Torsten exacts his revenge by whisking her away.
But she laid claim to his heart…
Headstrong and fierce, Éabha MacDonell’s true nature has been buried for six long years in a marriage that fills her with shame, and has kept her tucked in the shadows. But the death of her husband, and being forced from the only home she’s ever known, brings freedom in a way she’d never imagined. Free to rediscover parts of herself she’d thought never to behold again—her love of art, her desire for children. But most of all, the tug at her heart, the warmth of a secret glance and the heat of a passionate embrace.
In the arms of her captor, Éabha’s more liberated than she’s ever been before and Torsten might just have found the one person who can make him whole again.

Excerpt:

“Is this what ye want, Lady Éabha? Ye want to kill me?”

Teeth bared, chest rising and falling in erratic breaths, she glowered at him, but said not a word.

“Killing me will not solve anything.”

Her arm twitched, the blade nicking his skin ever so slightly. He could feel a tiny trickle of blood rolling down his throat.

She wriggled against him, horror showing on her face at what she’d done, but he held her tight. Every curve of her pressed against him. He stared at her mouth which had gone from a fearsome growl to open shock. Lord, but she was a beauty. Everything he’d ever wanted in a woman, and everything he couldn’t have.

Her eyes dipped just enough to stare at his mouth. Without thinking, Torsten lowered his lips to hers. At first it was a soft brush, a simple slide of his lips over her warm, rage-filled mouth.

But then she dropped the knife, gripped onto him tight, her body shuddering in a sigh that seemed filled with surrender.

Torsten deepened the kiss, claiming her with one, then two, then three swipes of his tongue between the seam of her lips. Tasting her. Delving inside her delicious mouth. Dining on the thunder and fire of her nature.

Éabha clung to him, kissing him back with frantic need. Her fingers curled into his shirt, and he fisted his hand in her hair. Torsten walked her back to the wall, pressing her body up against it. Pinning her there, though he allowed her free reign with her hands.

He kissed her until he couldn’t breath.
