Inside Sheoul, the demon realm sometimes called Hell, evil was everywhere.

It dripped off the sides of the sheer rock walls in streaks of black acid that ate into the stone with a hiss. It wafted through the humid air on tendrils of mist that reeked of sulfur and decaying flesh. And, as Vex watched, it oozed like toothpaste from out of a fissure in midair that only people like her could see.

Her purple-tipped black hair, already short and spiky, stood even more on end as the thing squeezing out of the fissure, a dead demon’s soul, popped free of whatever realm and mystical enclosure it had been inside. She was what her parents had called a daemani, a demon soul magnet, a person to whom souls stuck like glue. According to them, most daemanis couldn’t prevent it from happening, and that was a serious pain in the ass. If a demon died near Vex, not even the Grim Reaper’s personal daemanis, creatures called griminions, had a chance to collect the soul before it got sucked into her and stored as a glyph on her skin.

The demon shrieked, a sound only she or another soul-sensitive person could hear, as it struggled to keep from being sucked into the prison of her body. In a futile attempt to avoid the inevitable, she fled, her booted feet nimbly negotiating the rock shard-strewn ground that was all too common in this part of Sheoul.

I don’t know how long I sat there, staring at her beautiful face before my eyes, subconsciously rubbing the tattooed key that was placed over my heart. I couldn’t take it anymore, and the desire won over the haze.

It was too powerful.

It was too vivid.

I grabbed my phone. “Baby,” I said into the speaker. The ringing quickly
followed, going straight to voicemail. I hung up and tried again. “Baby,” I urged with desperation in my tone.

Still nothing.

I tried again and again and again.

I would try until the end of time if that’s what it took for her to answer.

To talk to me.

To save me.

To crave me.

Time just seemed to standstill, as my life slowly played out in front of me. Trying to balance in between the light and the darkness when all I could see was gray.

“What?!” she screamed into the phone, finally answering after I don’t know how many
failed attempts. “What the hell do you want now?”

“Mi cielo.” I breathed a sigh of relief.

She ignored my term of endearment. I hadn’t called her that in such a long time.

My heaven.

“What do you want, Austin? Why are you calling me? We’re over! I can’t do this anymore!”

I shut my eyes and let my mind wonder, allowing it to go to another place in time where she didn’t hate me.

“I remember the first time I made you smile,” I chuckled, as if it had just happened.

My nerves were on fire. The mere sound of her breathing through the phone was too intense for me. I licked my lips, my mouth suddenly dry.

“I remember when you used to smile just for me. Do you remember, baby? Do you remember what my love feels like?”

I heard her faintly breathing.

“Do you remember my hands on you? My lips? My tongue? The first time I made you come with my mouth? Do you remember all the times since? Tell me I’m not forgotten. Tell me you remember, baby.”

Silence.

“I love you, Briggs. I love you so fucking much. You’re killing me, don’t you see
that? I’m dying without you.”

“No, Austin. You were dying with me,” she rasped, knowing that it killed her to say
that.

“The first time I saw your face, I thought to myself, damn, this beautiful girl is goin’ to be the death of me. You were perfect in every way. I was a cocky son of a bitch who needed you then, as much as I need you now.”

More silence.

“I had a dream about you, baby. I always fucking dream about you. In my dream you had a ring on your finger. A ring I put there. You belonged to me. Only mine.
Forever fucking mine. You were pregnant, Briggs. You looked so goddamn happy. I saw light at the end of the tunnel for the first time in years.”

She sniffled into the phone.

“I made love to you. Slow, just the way you love. Taking my time to touch every last inch of your body. Memorizing every last bit of you. Making you come until you begged me to stop. I didn’t.”

“I can’t—” she tried to interject, but I didn’t let up.

“I kissed your stomach. Our baby. Letting my lips linger there, whispering sweet
lullabies, letting her know daddy will always be there. Baby, it was so real.
For a second I gave you the one thing you so desperately wanted, the one thing I can’t give you.”

She couldn’t breathe. Her pulse jumped, and the most feminine part of her body came alive. A current of desire and electricity bounced between them, both their breaths quickening. He stepped closer until they touched. Her chest rose, and his fell. Javier’s hand moved to her bicep, drifting, sliding. Z is the newest addition to author Larissa Ione’s Demonica Underworld as well as the latest in the 1,001 Dark Nights 2016 lineup. I am a ridiculously huge fan of Ms. Ione’s writing. I always swoon over a chance to visit with my fave underworlders and I can say that this was another amazing addition!

In Vex’s search for a way to rid herself of her latest batch of evil souls dwelling inside of her, she never expected to find a fallen angel certain she was his long-lost mate…well, holding his long-lost mate to be exact. Inside of her. Yeah, talk about a bit of a hiccup in her plan to meet up with the Grim Reaper himself in her rid-herself-of-the-evil-souls mission. Funny how things work out though because while Vex didn’t really believe she was carrying this fallen angel’s mate, she couldn’t deny this unexplained connection she felt to him. Stranger things have happened when it came to the underworld but could there be some truth to what he was saying? Could they be fated to be together again after all these years apart? If they were, she wouldn’t complain…he was hot, after all.

Here’s the thing with Larissa Ione’s Demonica series: I freaking adore everything about it. She writes complex stories that aren’t hard to follow and aren’t overwhelming. You can pick up one of her books at any point in any of her series and not be lost. To me, that is a talent and a gift. Z was no exception.

There was so much to love about this novella. With Ms. Ione’s signature strong, witty heroines and the heroes capable of meeting them at every turn and loving them for who they are, this story is a total win from start to finish. I loved Vex. Her personality jumped off of the pages and had me admiring her strength and wit. Z is a beautiful match for her. He’s loyal and has a heart bigger than the moon. Their similarities were few but their differences really made their relationship shine. Where Vex is willing to bend the rules, Z is steadfast in sticking to them. Where Vex is unbelieving of her connection to Z, he is unwavering in his faith that she is his lost love. But my favorite thing is when we learn that Z is very inexperienced compared to Vex’s more experienced past when it comes to being intimate…and if that didn’t just make me love him more!

But all of this is yet another gift Ms. Ione gives us…complex, vulnerable, multi-faceted characters that evoke so much feeling while reading you can’t help but experience a wonderful range of emotion.

Whether you’re already a fan of Ms. Ione, or this is the first of her works you pick up, I guarantee you will love this story!

She headed for her favorite booth, but drew up short when she saw that it was occupied. Her brain took precious seconds to catch up to her eyes. Her body zinged to life in a way it hadn’t in months. It was all too easy to take a walk down memory lane and feel him lifting her against that wall and shoving his cock home, growling filthy words in her ear in that same tone of voice he was using now.

Shit.

She held his gaze even though all she wanted to do was look away. James wasn’t pretty. He was far too masculine for that. The first time she’d seen him, she thought he’d look perfectly at home on the back of a Harley, and that perception hadn’t changed with time. Everything about him screamed danger in a way she wasn’t used to. The men in her family were dangerous—there was no doubt of that—but it was a polished danger. James’s wasn’t. He was gritty and primal and…She really needed to stop. Right now. “I wouldn’t put anything past you at this point.”

“You wound me.”

“You kidnapped me. I’d say we’re nowhere near even.” Something she had to keep reminding herself, though the fact she kept forgetting annoyed the hell out of her. Only a weak woman would get all aflutter over a man who obviously meant her harm. A weak woman or one with a death wish.

What are your Top 5 must haves for writing?

As a mom of two young kids, the wife of a man with a very non-traditional work schedule, and just someone who isn’t very good at following a rigid schedule, writing for me happens whenever and wherever it needs to. I don’t have much of a ritual, or ‘must-haves’ for writing.

However, there are certain things that get me in the mood to write, or help me focus when I have such luxury.

First, I make a Spotify soundtrack for each book I’m working on. It helps set the mood, and then if I’m switching between edits on one book and writing another, as I am often doing, switching soundtracks helps me immediately get into the right headspace. In fact, if you have spotify, you can listen to OUTLAW COWBOY’s soundtrack here. It’s heavy on the Dierks Bentley, as so many of my soundtracks are.

Second, I always have a Pinterest board for each book. In the beginning, it usually helps orient me, helps me decide how I want the characters, houses, settings to look. As I’m writing, I often go back to the Pinterest board if I’m stuck, hoping it will spark an idea. I’ve actually written a lot of scenes that were inspired by happening upon a random pin. In fact, in OUTLAW COWBOY both Delia’s engraving on the bottom of her boot, and Rose’s engraving on her gun were inspired by Pins I found. Third, well I mean I have to have my computer (that should probably have come first) to do all of these things. I never write by hand anymore. Sometimes I will plot on pen and paper (when desperate measures are needed), but everything I do is typed. First drafts, edits, what have you, I have become so computer oriented that I recently wrote a letter to my grandparents and it was nearly illegible as it had been FOREVER since I’d had to hand write anything. I can type much faster than I can handwrite, and I can dictate even faster than I type, which is how I’ve been writing books lately. So, Mr. Computer is most important in the must haves, that’s for sure.

Fourth, in the world of beverages, I am a caffeine queen. If it’s morning, I usually have a mug of coffee at my elbow, and if it’s afternoon, I’ll have a can of pop/soda/whatever you call it. Usually it’s a Coke, and it is what gets me through the afternoon.

Lastly, my deep dark probably not at all secret is that, although I like chocolate, it’s not my go to writing snack like it is for so many romance writers. I love fruity candy—Starburst, Skittles (greens picked out), Jolly Ranchers (no watermelon, please!), Nerds, Twizzlers, Now and Laters, it’s a sad day indeed if I’m out of my favorite candy. (There may be a mountain of Starburst wrappers at my elbow as I type because, even though it’s morning, mentioning candy necessitates eating it). I even had a candy bar at my wedding, as my love of candy is known far and wide. I can tell you far too much about the way different candies have changed their colors over the years (RIP lime Skittles, Lifesavers, and lemon Jolly Ranchers).

Also, a shout out to my bed, where I can curl up and happily work when my husband is on day shift and my kids are at school. A truly important must-have runner up.

Damned MacDonells.

Why the hell did those bloody fools have to keep raiding? Had they not yet learned their lesson?

Laird Torsten Mackenzie crouched just out of arrow’s reach from the high, thick walls of the MacDonell’s castle.

The fortress loomed up in the moonlight, but despite its fortifications, he planned to breach it this very night. A promise

he’d made the last time the bastards had dared to cross onto his land.

Torsten was certain he’d been clear that any further raids on his lands would not be tolerated. Another raid from the

MacDonells was a declaration of war, he’d even put it in writing so the imbeciles would not be confused. Yet, despite

Q&A for Maisey Yates – Take Me, Cowboy

How did you first get started writing romance? I had always fiddled around with writing, but didn’t know what I wanted to write until I picked up my first Harlequin Presents. That was when it clicked for me. So really, I started writing romance almost as soon as I started reading it. I fell in love, and that was it.

If you could be any villain from your favorite novel, who would you choose and why? I think I would have to be Narcissa Malfoy, from Harry Potter. Just because she has awesome hair and I have a thing for Lucius. (Well, as played by Jason Isaacs)

Out of all the books you’ve read, which one would you turn into a book to film adaptation, (if it has not been done before)? That’s a hard one. I’m going to have to go with Megan Crane’s Edge of Obsession. I love the world that she’s created in that series, and I would really enjoy a chance to see these dystopian Vikings on screen.

List five adjectives to describe yourself.

Caffeinated. Busy. Creative. Hungry (typically). Bad dancer.

What’s your favorite place for inspiration? I get inspiration from everywhere. Music, the view, good weather, bad weather. That’s the great thing about writing. If you really look around, and listen, inspiration is everywhere.

Do you have one thing that can completely distract you while writing? My virtual social life. I have a few friends that I text way too often. And I can get involved in a conversation and forget that I’m supposed to be on task.

9. What is your trick to getting over “Writers Block”?

Writing through it. That’s the only way I know to solve a problem with the book. If I leave it for too long, it becomes easier to stay away from it. I have to face it head on, or avoidance can become an issue.

When it comes to book covers, what inspires you? Pinterest. I put together a board of visual inspiration when I plot my books, and then I usually send that board to the publisher.

While you were writing, did you ever feel as if you were one of the characters? None of my characters are ever me exactly. But, I definitely borrow from real-life experiences and feelings. Particularly various issues and insecurities, though, I usually apply them to situations I’ve never been in, just to keep it removed.

If you could ask any character in Take Me, Cowboy a question, what would it be? I would ask Anna where she got her great collection of old musicals on Blu-ray.

What are you working on next? Right now I’m working on finishing up edits for Tough Luck Hero, and upcoming book in my Copper Ridge series.
