Closer is told from both Teller and Ella’s POvs. It’s told from both their past and present. These two will infuse themselves into your bones.

“This is what happens when wrecked and damage collide.”

I won’t go into any details on this book. These two are each other’s support through everything. Especially when a tragic accident effects them and everyone around them.

I will just leave these quotes to give you an idea of what you are in for.

“For seven years, she’s been everything to me. For the last seven years, I’ve taken what I can get from her and stolen what I could not.”

“I’m terrified of us. I can’t shake the feeling that we’re going to fuck up so bad one of these days and this will be gone. I won’t survive it.”

Those quotes are only small bits and pieces of what this story is about. I loved every single word of this story. I couldn’t get enough of it. I was drowning in their passion and didn’t care if I came up for air, ever.

Mary – you have just earned yourself another huge fan. I am not sure what rock I have been hiding under and have not read your work before. But I going to rectify that immediately. So if you are like me and totally new to Mary Elizabeth, I am begging you to read this book. I promise you, you won’t regret it.

He steps forward, close enough that I can feel his heat. “Do what?”

“Spend time with me. Come to my rescue. Make sure I make it home safely.” I wave a hand. “All of it. You don’t owe me anything.”

“You think I’m here out of a sense of obligation?” He laughs. “Fuck, that’s insane.”

“Is it? Can we just talk about the elephant in the room?” I ask him.

He’s staring at me, and it takes a few beats for him to process that I’ve spoken. I’d laugh if seeing him drunk didn’t also unsettle something deep inside me, some old part of me that still wants Sebastian to be my rock. But I’m not the girl recovering in the hospital anymore. I’m not the girl crying at her sister’s grave. Those experiences are part of who I am now, but I’m more, too. I’m stronger. I don’t need Sebastian’s strength to hold me steady. Or I shouldn’t.

I tuck my hands into my pockets. “Two years ago, the night before I left for Colorado…” He goes still, and I can’t make myself finish the sentence.

“I crossed a line,” he says.

I snort. God, the problem isn’t that he crossed a line—it’s that he didn’t. “Are you serious right now?”

He cuts his eyes to me again, the muscle ticking in his jaw. “It was a mistake, and you’re obviously still angry with me about it.”

I step away from him and wrap my hands around the porch rail. If I let myself look at him, I’ll overanalyze every expression that crosses his face. I realize I’m holding my breath and exhale. “It was a shitty thing for you to do.”

He’s silent for several heavy beats of my heart. When I can’t stand the silence anymore, I release the railing and turn to face him. “Let me make sure I understand,” he says. “Since I almost kissed you two years ago, I can’t walk you home anymore?”

“I don’t want…” I take a breath as I search for the words to explain how this makes me feel. “I don’t want a pity friendship.”

“What the fuck is a pity friendship?”

“It’s when you spend time with someone because you don’t want them to be alone.”

“You’re an expert on what I want now?”

“I think you made it perfectly clear what you do and don’t want from me two years ago.”

He takes half a step forward, and his gaze drops to my mouth. Can you feel someone looking at your lips? Because his gaze is so intense on my mouth right now that I’m sure I could close my eyes and still feel it as distinctly as a touch. “Dammit, Alex, if I’d have known you’d hold such a grudge for thirty seconds of weakness, I would have kissed you that night. Fuck my better judgment. At least then I’d know how you taste.”

I swallow hard and tell my pounding heart not to make more of this than it is. “You’re drunk, Sebastian.”

Stepping back, he drags a hand over his face. “Yeah.” He takes another step back. “Good night, Alex.”

I unlock the door and go inside, shutting it behind me without looking at him again. Slowly, I take the stairs up to my old room, close the door behind me, and lean against it. Only then do I allow myself to squeeze my eyes shut and take a long, deep breath to calm my racing heart.

His words replay in my head, making the muscles in my stomach grow tight. Just once I’d like Sebastian Crowe to make good on one of the fantasies he inspires. Just once I’d like him to follow me into this room and lock the door before pushing me against it and lowering his mouth to mine. I’d like to feel those rough hands slide under my shirt to unbutton my jeans…

I pull out my phone and text Bailey, letting her know I made it home okay. Then, without washing my face or changing my clothes, I fall into bed, close my eyes, and break a promise to myself by fantasizing about Sebastian Crowe.

“At least then I’d know how you taste.”

“Yes. See, I left the cottage I’m renting without using the bathroom by mistake,” she began, twisting her fingers together, “and I was planning on running a loop around the farm, but it’s bigger than I thought.”

“Ah. So you were looking for a bathroom in the woods?”

“Well, yes.” She swallowed. “Sort of. But then I heard a splash and saw you…” Her cheeks were practically purple now.

I played dumb. “Saw me what?”

“Saw you naked, OK?” she blurted, throwing her hands up. “I admit it—I saw you naked.”

I had no hangups about nudity, but I was damn serious about my privacy, and about people sneaking up on me. But her embarrassment was funny. The two times I’d seen her before, she’d been so polished and poised. It felt good to put her in her place a little. “So you climbed a tree for a better view, is that it?”

Bowing her head, she dragged the toe of one shoe across the wood planks of the porch floor. “Something like that.” Then she looked up at me. Took a breath. “I’m really sorry. I shouldn’t have done that. I was—I mean, I got—I couldn’t—” She sighed, briefly closing her eyes. “I have no excuse. Will you accept my apology?”

She was prettier without makeup, I decided. And the way she wore her hair off her face emphasized the wideness of her eyes, the angle of her cheekbones, the arch of her brows. Her lips didn’t need all that glossy crap, either. They were a perfect rosy pink, and I wondered if they’d feel as soft as they looked.

Fuck. I hadn’t kissed anyone in three years.

Clearing my throat, I took a step back. “Yeah. It’s fine.” Now get out of here.

She didn’t move. “So you’re not going to fire me?”

“I never hired you.”

“I know. But I really want this job. I think I can help, Jack. I know I can.”

“Suit yourself. I want nothing to do with it.” My name on her lips was trouble. Needing some distance from her, I started walking toward the dock to get my shoes and socks, but she followed me. God, she was a pest. It reminded me of the way Steph used to tag along after the boys when we were kids, wanting to get in our games.

“Are you going to be like this the entire time I’m here?” she asked.

“Like what?”

“Moody and uncooperative?”

“Probably.”

“Why? Do you hate me that much?”

“I don’t hate anybody. I just don’t see why we should pay some city girl who’s never set foot on a farm to advise us.” We reached the dock, and I leaned down to get my stuff.

“I’m not even asking to be paid, so piss off!” she shouted, her voice carrying on the water.

I straightened. “Oh, you’re working for free?”

“Yes!”

“Then you’re an idiot. Or so rich you don’t need the money.”

“I’m not an idiot,” she said through clenched teeth.

“So you’re rich, then.” I don’t know why I was being such an asshole. But for some reason, I did not want to let her see another side of me, or see another side to her. “I should have guessed.”

She crossed her arms. “And what’s that supposed to mean?”

“It means you look like you’ve led a charmed life. Like you’ve had everything you’ve ever wanted handed to you. Like you’ve never gotten your hands dirty.”

“So get them dirty.”

I almost fell off the dock. “What?”

“Get them dirty. Teach me about working this farm. I want to learn.”

Was she serious? The last thing I needed was to drag her ass around all day, explaining things. Or stare at her ass all day, imagining things. But one look at her defiant face and I shook my head. “Why do I feel like if I say no, you’ll just keep bothering me?”

She smiled and clasped her hands behind her back, rocking forward on her toes. “Because I will. I don’t like being told no.”

“Of course you don’t.” Jesus, she was trouble. A bad apple—smooth and shiny on the outside, spoiled rotten on the inside. But for no good reason, I found myself giving in. “Fine. Go change your clothes.”

My Review:

The Only One is part of author Lauren Blakely’s One Love Series as well as book number eighteen in the 2016 1,001 Dark Nights lineup. If you don’t already know I’m a HUGE fan of Ms. Blakely’s and was so excited to hear she would be in the 1,001 Dark Nights project and let me tell you, this book was amazing. It had everything I have grown to love from a Lauren Blakely book…heat, emotion, humor, and so much more. I loved it!

I love a good second chance romance and when it involves some serious heartbreak, it makes things that much better. I know, I know, I can’t help it! That kind of emotion gets me every time. Add into that two characters you want nothing more than to have a second chance at a passion that sizzled off the pages and I was glued to each page of this book.

A sad twist of fate tore new lovers Penny and Gabriel apart years earlier and neither one ever forgot the other. Now, with fate wising up, they find themselves in a chance meeting. What happens next is pure magic. I mean how could it not be? Gabriel is a sexy, sweet, tattooed chef with a passion for everything he does (yes, that includes Penny 😉 ) and it’s impossible not to swoon over him. Penny is a gal with a great head on her shoulders and a huge heart. She’s a gal I would love to be friends with! Together they burn up the pages and melted my heart. I couldn’t get enough!

Whether you’re already a Lauren Blakely fan or this is the first of her books you pick up, I have no doubt you’ll love this story! Thank you, Ms. Blakely, for a delicious read!

YUM! I loved this recipe book. It contains really simple easy to make recipes that are Divine! This book is so easy to use and even comes with a fast shopping list. What I loved about it was that there are not long steps to make cupcakes. It is simple and the best part was they are sooooo good. My daughters, who are super picky eaters, never like any cake unless it is from the box. These cupcakes they loved! Their favorite was the strawberry shortcake cupcakes. The icing recipes are also easy and taste heavenly as well. One other factor I adore about this book is that you do not find yourself with too much batter. The measurements are just perfect what the amount calls for. If you are gluten free or even want sugar free cupcakes, Bethany Lopez puts in her book what to do. It is such a great on-hand cookbook to have that can be used for many occasions. Plus you will not find yourself in a kitchen for hours!

These are also gourmet cupcakes you can easily bring to a party and they will be the hit dish. They are tasty, easy to make, cheap to make and if my daughters love them any one will.

My Review:

The Darkest Torment is book twelve in author Gena Showalter’s Lords of the Underworld series, a series I have been loving for years. I am always so exited for a new installment in this series and once again, Ms. Showalter nails it. I adored Baden and Katarina’s story!

Baden and Katarina’s relationship starts off in quite a bit of turmoil when Baden, in search of an item he must steal in order to not only attempt to find a bit of relief from the new being inhabiting his soul but also to appease his new master, bursts into her wedding and starts making demands from her new husband. Of course, as it turns out, this isn’t exactly a husband she’s thrilled to be married to and her main concern quickly goes from just getting by to surviving and keeping her beloved dogs safe. Turns out this is only the beginning of what will become a story of twists, turns, emotion, heat, and even humor.

I love the internal struggles the Lords go through. I love that in each book we get a closer look at a specific character and getting to know more of Baden in this book was so fantastic. You can’t help but fall in love with these guys. Baden was gruff and short with everyone. Pretty darn unlikable. But because we get to read what he’s thinking and what he’s going through, you’ll end up loving him and will totally understand why he is the way he is. Katarina is equally as fantastic a character. I loved her feisty, spitfire attitude and her ability to keep a somewhat level head in some seriously stressful situations. Then, she goes from all of that already awesomeness to a total badass! Baden and Katarina’s relationship is one helluva enemies to lovers that I just adored reading and I know you will to.

Another one of the things I love about this series is that not only do we meet new characters along the way, but we get to see all of our favorite characters form the very beginning of the series. They really have turned into a family of sorts and to have been able to read that from the beginning is so special. While I’m sure you can pick up each book and read it alone, I think reading the series as a whole is an amazing journey and one I highly recommend!

Thank you, Ms. Showalter, for another amazing story! I can’t wait to see what you have in store for the Lords next.

Chapter One

It is the moon that wakes her.

It is always the moon that tells her, somehow, that sends the rush of fight-or-flight chemicals into her blood, galvanizes her body with a warning of danger, a command to wake and act. The eerie light is bright through the window, shimmering in the room.

Now the metallic scratching on the door announces Its presence.

It is here again, the monster, coming for her. The thing that butchered her family. That left her scratched and bleeding and almost dead.
