First off, let me tell you that I enjoy reading R.L.’s stories. Her book, Quiet Lies is one of my favorite books and my favorite by her. And I was so hoping that this book would rank right up there with it. But somewhere along the lines, things fell short for me.

Bleed The Water Red is not a bad book by any means. I know a lot will enjoy this book more than I. And I do hate that I didn’t enjoy this book as much as I wanted to. But let me explain myself.

The plot line was amazing. I love how we were given small snippets throughout the story and were able to piece together our own thoughts. What I didn’t like was how things felt disjointed at times. It’s hard to explain without giving away parts of the story, but things are left out it seems or overlooked. It makes the writing come across as scattered. And that’s what hurt the story and pace for me. I felt all over the place at times. And I do understand that part of a psychological thriller is to have pieces left out, but in this particular scenario, the pieces were obvious but at the same killed the vibe for me. I knew what would happen in the end because of this. And for me, that really sucked.

Like I said, this book is good. I love R.L. and her writing. However, her writing in this book was not what I have to come expect from her. I know that this story came to her fast and I get that you just need to get it out. However, as a beta reader, proofreader and editor, there are a lot of things that I personally would have changed/edited. I am in no way knocking any of the proofreaders or editors on this, there is nothing wrong in that aspect. But for me, certain things were not working and made it plainly obvious what the outcome was going to be.

The characters are very well written. I love their backgrounds and where they are from. The amazing friendship between Layla, Poppy and Austin is awesome – I love these three so much. I enjoyed learning about Layla’s past with Gent and how all that comes together in the end. This part of the story was beautiful and heart-wrenching to watch unfold. Layla has some growing struggles to deal with it and does come in to her own eventually. It’s a really good story with different avenues that all come together in the end.

With that being said, please give the book a chance. It’s a great story line. I loved how this is tied to Quiet Lies. If you have read it before, you will like the tie-in. If you haven’t, it won’t hurt the story at all. I gave this book 3.5 stars because my only gripe was the disjointedness that I felt and how I was able to figure the ending immediately but the overall story line was what kept me moving forward and not stopping.

Will I continue to read R.L.’s books – hell yes! She’s writes amazing stories. This one just want for me and that sometimes happens. But it won’t stop me from reading any of her books.

Excerpt from NEVER SURRENDER:

Candace’s eyes flew open in the darkness when the mattress shifted and a warm, naked body pressed to hers. Her heart rate shot up as she rolled away, then a low, masculine chuckle penetrated the roaring of blood in her ears, an instant before that distinctive, spicy scent registered.

Ryan. As the wave of alarm receded, relief and joy took its place.

“Hi,” he whispered, sliding one arm around her to draw her close.

Excitement punched through her. She rolled into him, wrapping her arms around his neck and smiling against his mouth as he kissed her. “Hi. Am I dreaming?” She cuddled in closer and held on tight, squeezing her eyes shut. He was here, safe and sound, and this one embrace soothed all the emotional bruises she’d been feeling.

“Nope. Want me to prove it?”

“Mm-hmm.” God, he felt good. No surprise, he was already fully erect and hot against her abdomen. Arousal stirred, warming her from the inside out.

He brought his mouth down on hers and the kiss changed from slow and lazy to hungry in a single heartbeat. It felt like a year since she’d last held him this way, rather than months. He tasted like toothpaste and felt like heaven.

When he raised his head a minute later, she was breathing faster and her entire body tingled, crying out for more. “I can’t believe you’re really here,” she whispered, running a finger down the side of his cheek, over the short, neatly-trimmed beard.

Her handsome, proud warrior. In the last picture she’d seen of him a few days ago, the beard had been wild and bushy after spending almost two weeks out in the mountains.

“Things settled down a lot so I managed to get leave a few days early. Found a flight that got me in an hour ago and drove straight here to surprise you.” He leaned back slightly, his grin flashing white in the soft moonlight coming through the blinds that covered the window above the headboard. “So are you surprised?”

Her heart squeezed. “Yes, I’m so glad you’re here.” She had been tired when she’d gone to bed, but not so tired she should have missed the sound of the door opening or him coming into the room. He did have crazy stealth powers, however.

He huffed out a laugh and bent to find her mouth with his once more. “Missed you, Ace.”

He backs me into the wall. “I’m giving you one chance, Lou-Lou. One chance to tell me what the hell is going on and why you’re really here.”
My heart thumps against my chest. “Fuck you.”
His eyes darken. “Is that your final answer?”
“No.” I give him a sugary sweet smile. “My final answer is—fuck you, asshole.”
I try and get out from under him but he leans into me causing every cell in my body to ignite. “Leave me alone.”
“Not a chance. Tell me why you’re going on a date with Tyrone tonight.”
I’m so thrown off by the change of subject I’m not sure how to respond. I decide to be blunt. “I don’t owe you any explanations.”
His jaw tics and he positions his hand beside my head. “You might not owe me any explanations but if you think I’m not telling my father about this you’ve got another thing coming, sweetie.”
I laugh because he thinks he’s got one up on me but he couldn’t be more wrong. “Go right ahead.” I stare at the bruise forming on his cheek. “Knock yourself out.”
The hand beside my head rattles so hard against the wall I jump. “I fucking knew it,” he says gruffly.
I crinkle my nose. “You don’t know anything.”

My breathing hitches when his eyes lock with mine, daring me to make my next move.
I slowly trace my finger along his jaw before running it over his lips. He plants a soft kiss on my finger and I’m transfixed when he parts his mouth and licks the pad of my thumb, inviting me to continue.
The electricity between us kicks up another notch and I slip my thumb past his lips.

The sound of my hand slapping his cheek takes both of us by surprise.
“I’m not leaving,” I say.
He rubs his cheek and his jaw works. “You don’t have to because once I tell Tyrone that you belong to DeLuca he won’t touch you with a 10-foot pole.” He smirks. “And once I tell DeLuca that you fucked up and let me in on the real reason you’re here—I’m sure you’ll be long gone.”
I smile when the thought hits me. “I think you’re forgetting something.”
“What’s that?”
I wrap my arms around his neck and drag my teeth along the shell of his ear before whispering, “You won’t have any friends once I tell them you’re DeLuca’s son and you’ve done nothing but lie straight to their faces for the past three years.”
The look he gives me could kill me right where I stand.
I lift my chin and push him off me. “Talk to you later, Ricky.”
The look on his face is priceless when I blow him a kiss and slam the door.

I don’t know where he is…but I know he’s close. I open my eyes and blink rapidly due to the rain coming down much harder now.
Tingles erupt on my skin and the air thickens when I look ahead and see the outline of him walking. Only he’s not walking toward me, he’s walking away from me. He must have just left.
When he takes another step, I realize he’s not actually walking at all…he’s stumbling.
He holds his arm out, bracing himself against the alley wall briefly and I continue to watch him. He waits a beat and attempts to walk again, but stumbles…even worse this time.
I’ve never seen Ricardo so out of sorts before. Panic jams in my chest with my next thought. Oh, god. What if he’s hurt? What if someone attacked him?
And just like that, I’m running as fast as I can to get to him. Since he’s less than a block away, I catch up quickly.
His back is turned to me but I reach for his arm as he begins to sway.
His arm twitches and I can feel the chords of his muscles begin to tighten.
Shit, he’s going to take a swing. He hates being touched.
“It’s just me,” I say quickly. “Only me.”
“I know it’s you.” His voice comes out slurred and gruff.
“Are you okay?”
He yanks his arm away. “I’m fine. Leave me the fuck alone. I don’t need your help.”
I force myself to ignore the sharp sting of his words before slowly backing away from him.
He falls against the alley wall and hangs his head. “Christ, I hate it when Tyrone’s right. I’m never drinking again.”
“Famous last words,” I say before I can stop myself.
Memories of the day we first met and when he said those very same words to me begin to play through my head like a slideshow…
That is until his head snaps up and he shoots me a look so threatening the entire world stops. “Fuck you,” he spews.

I take another step forward and peer down at her. “You think I would hurt you?”
She glares at me, pure venom in her eyes. “Yes.”
I won’t let her know how much it kills me that she would think that. How much I hate that she has every right to think that…because it’s the truth.
Her mouth parts in surprise when I reach down and skim my thumb along her cheek. Before she can protest, I cup her jaw firmly with one hand and trace the delicate line of her neck with my other, pulling her closer.
Her pulse races beneath my fingertips as I continue tugging her until she’s pressed against me and can’t escape my hold.
My cock twitches so hard against her tight little body—straining to be inside her again, it’s almost painful. She looks up at me with hooded eyes when I shift against her, giving her no choice but to feel me, and I can practically taste both her desire and her surrender right fucking then.
I lean down until my lips are ghosting over hers. When her tongue darts out and she licks that lower lip—it takes everything in me not to suck it into my mouth, throw her up against the wall, rip off that trashy outfit she still has on, and take her over and over again in front of everyone…right here, right now.
Instead, I tighten my grip on the back of her neck and look into her eyes. “You’re right…I would.”
I let go of her abruptly and she stumbles back, her expression a combination of shocked and pissed the hell off.

Old Maids at Versailles – Guest Blog Post by Sally Christie

Louis XV, who ruled France for a good part of the 18^th century, fathered 10 children with his long suffering Polish wife: Eight daughters and two sons. Six daughters and one son (the father of the ill-fated Louis XVI) survived to their teenage years.

His two eldest daughters were twins and were known as Madame Elisabeth and Madame Henriette (daughters of the king were always known as Madame, even if they weren’t married). True to royal form, Madame Elisabeth was married off to Spain just two weeks after her 12^th birthday. It wasn’t the most prestigious match – she was only marrying a younger son, not the heir to the Spanish throne – but it helped solidify the France /Spain alliance.

Then, the marrying stopped. Louis XV’s five other daughters – Henriette, Adelaide, Victoire, Sophie and Louise – never married, an almost unheard of situation in the history of royalty. Traditionally, princesses were valuable as pawns for securing alliances between countries and building new ones. So what happened? Why did the five of them never marry?

It was a combination of factors. For starters, there were not as many potential Catholic bridegrooms in a Europe that was half Protestant. Had Charles Stuart, the Young Pretender, succeeded in regaining the British throne, he would have been a good candidate, but his attempt failed and the French king was not eager to ally himself with a stateless pretender.

Louis was also very fond of his daughters, at least when they were younger, and was reluctant to send them away. He was also a wee bit lazy, and never made their marriages a priority. The princesses themselves, of course, loved their father and their life at Versailles, and would not have wanted to leave the comfort and luxuries of (arguably) the most magnificent palace in the world for some inferior court in a foreign country.

The third book in my trilogy about the many mistresses of Louis XV, The Enemies of Versailles, opens in 1750 when the five sisters were between 13 and 22 years old. One of the running themes in the book is their fear of getting married and what they would do to avoid it: the youngest, Louise, was even rumored to stuff one shoulder of her gown to make herself look misshapen and crippled, and therefore unmarriageable! Only Madame Henriette had any semblance of a love affair. She and the handsome young Duc de Chartres, a cousin of the king, fell in love and wanted to wed. The King couldn’t agree, for it would mean the Orleans family would become too powerful and upset the balance of power amongst his nobility.

As they got older and lost some of their youthful charm, the unmarried spinsters became objects of ridicule and figures of fun. As shown in both The Rivals of Versailles and The Enemies of Versailles (half of which is told by Madame Adelaide), the king’s daughters pitted themselves against their father’s mistresses and gradually became more and more estranged from the king and from any sort of influence at court.

The decision to never marry the princesses had serious consequences. Each princess, as a “Daughter of France” had the right to an enormous household, each containing hundreds of officers and servants. This, of course, cost the government a great deal of money. By the time their three nephews (including the future Louis XVI and his wife Marie Antoinette) married and had children, there were more royal households at Versailles than ever before, all of them draining the coffers of the country and increasing its debt, no small factor in the coming Revolution.
