I really enjoyed the first book in this series so it was a no brainer to read this one. Both books can be read as standalones as there is very little that interconnects the two.

Let me start off by telling you that if you are hoping for a romantic suspense, don’t expect much from this book. This is definitely more suspense with a tad of romance added in. Her first book was very much the same way, so I was not shocked to find the same with this one. However, I still enjoyed the overall plot.

As you know for the blurb, Maggie is now a park ranger. Vic is still in the BAU and is currently tracking a murder who’s victims are hikers. After a lone hiker is found strung up in Maggie’s park, Vic is called in because it fits the description of his killer. Maggie and Vic have a past, but this part of the story, the romance, is definitely a second thought as it is not well plotted out and honestly, I could care less. LOL

We meet a group of young hikers, who you know will the ones to on the radar for the killer. This is where Katee excels in this story. She does a great job of building the suspense and tension; she leaves us little bread crumbs, and has us guessing who the killer could possibly be. I may have figured out who it was, but it still enticing to read. While I enjoyed how Katee plotted things out, I did wish she delved into more about the killer and the why’s behind it.

Overall, it was ok read for me. I felt that the romance portion fell completely flat and this book should just be considered suspense not romantic suspense. There were some things that were left unknown between the secondary characters and they seemed to be an important part of the book, so I expected more there too. As I said, if you are hoping for a romantic suspense, don’t expect much romance in this one. There’s a ton of suspense with a splash of romance added in. But again, I still enjoyed the plot enough to give the book 3.5 stars.

Vic’s gaze fell on his phone. Maggie’s number was now in the contacts folder. It would be easy to dial it, just to check on her.

Except it was late, and she hadn’t asked for him to babysit her.

He’d gone years without seeing her, and now that they were in the same general area, it was like they were two magnets that could barely resist the pull. He wanted to hear her voice, to sit her down and share a meal that wasn’t military issue, to actually talk.

His phone rang, which startled him so much he almost dropped it. Vic stared at the screen for several precious seconds, wondering if he was more tired than he’d thought, because it sure as fuck looked like Maggie was calling him. “Sutherland.”

“It’s me.”

He sat on the edge of the bed, suddenly painfully aware that he wore only a towel. It shouldn’t matter. She couldn’t see him, didn’t know what he was or wasn’t wearing, but it did matter. “Hey, Maggie.”

“I have to apologize.” He could almost feel her soft sigh. “You were right, and I was acting like a stubborn kid. This whole thing—the murders in the park and having to deal with my past and you—has got me all twisted up.”

Maybe it was the events of the last two days, but he was so goddamn tired of doing the noble thing. He never put himself or his personal shit before a case. Not once.

He’d never wanted to before.

“I twist you up?”

“As if you didn’t know. I had something of a crush on you when we were partners—which I’m sure you knew after I threw myself at you—and apparently I didn’t outgrow it as much as I thought.”

The dimness of the room evoked an intimacy he didn’t deserve. Was Maggie sitting in her bedroom in low light, too? He liked the picture that made. “You have nothing to apologize for.”

“I’ve been making an ass of myself since you stepped off that helicopter.” She shifted, the sound painfully loud in the near silence. “And I’m doing it again, apparently. My whole point was that I’m sorry and I’ll be professional from now on. You don’t have to worry about any breakdowns or hissy fits.”

If he was smart, he’d take her apology for what it was and allow it to move them back to solid ground. There were lives on the line and a condensed timeline that was only going to get more condensed with each body that popped up.

But when Vic spoke, he didn’t move them back to firm ground. He threw them right over the edge of the cliff. “Fuck being professional. I want you, Maggie. Not the former FBI agent. Not the park ranger. I want you.”

I close the door and lean against it with a heavy sigh after Nick returns to his car.

What does it say about me that I can spend two hours looking after my terminally ill friend yet come home feeling sorry for myself when Nick practically ditches me at my front door? I feel adrift in my own house, left alone with just my thoughts and my worry for the friend I already feel slipping away from me.

It’s too late at night to call Tasha or my mom, and when I phoned Lita from Kathryn’s to update her on the situation, she informed me that she’d caught a cab home from the auction and was headed to bed.

That’s where I should be heading too. That is, if I had any hope of going to bed and not lying there for the next several hours thinking about Nick.

Wanting him.

Needing the kind of contentment and comfort I’ve only ever felt in his arms.

I pick up my phone, my fingers itching with the urge to dial his number. I could ask him to come back. I know he would. I also know that if I’d invited him into my home tonight, into my bed, we’d be crossing a threshold with no turning back.

If we try to return to each other again and fail, it will be for the last time. For my own sake, for my sanity, it would have to be.

As much as I wish I had Nick’s strength to lean on, I’m not sure I’m ready to face that much finality in one night.

“I love you too.” Presley lifted her chin and pressed her lips against his. “I’ll call you tomorrow.” With a final goodbye, she stepped into the waiting car and gave the driver her address. The entire ride, all she could hear were Dylan’s angry words telling her it was all her fault.

WOW!! Where and how do I begin this review?!? Flutter was so much more than I expected. And it’s Olivia at her best!!!

Flutter is romantic suspense that Olivia wove together with her intricate web of twists, turns and surprises that will leave you wanting more. From the very start, you are pulled into the story and immediately need to know what happened and where the story goes.

Flutter is told in 3rd person narrative but goes back and forth between the present and the past. I am not usually a huge fan of 3rd person POV but Olivia made this work really well; it almost felt like I was watching a movie play out before me. It was gripping and powerful and flowed at the perfect pace.

Dylan and Presley are two characters that will stay with you forever. The blurb says it all – this is a book of deceit, betrayal and revenge at it’s finest. It’s heartbreaking in so many ways watching Dylan realize the past is not only a lie but that in order to fix the past, he must do the unthinkable – relive it all over again. Presley will pull at your heart strings – my heart hurt for her in ways I never thought possible. And Dylan’s ally, it’s impossible to not love this character deeply.

Olivia has definitely upped her game with Flutter. The delivery and her writing technique make this book one my top faves this year. It’s a romantic suspense with a touch of psychological thriller added in and will keep you engrossed in the story til the very end. Flutter is a book I will be recommending to everyone!

“Kill me?” she whispers, her fingertips caressing my cheek. I want to push my body onto her, and feel her warmth against my skin one more time before I take her life and her body cools. I’m going to enjoy her. She’s dark and twisted.
