SYNOPSIS

Sometimes we must let go of what was, appreciate what remains and fearlessly embrace what comes next.

Sebastian “Bas”

Born to a family of outlaws, I was destined to ride with the Satan’s Knights MC. With mayhem and havoc in my blood and chaos living deep in my soul, I learned the Devil don’t sleep. You never hear him creeping and he often comes disguised as everything you ever wanted.

I was just teenager when she first showed, masquerading as the girl of my dreams. A whiskey shootin’ spitfire who knocked me on my ass and helped me turn the town upside down. The girl who stole my heart with her smile and never gave it back. The same bitch who ruined me and turned my blood to ice.

It’s been six years since I turned my back on Mac, my family and my club. I’ve pushed her to the back of my head, wrote everyone off and damned the Kentucky charter to hell. But, where God built a church, the Devil built a chapel.
Now, her life is on the line and it’s clear I’m still a sucker for her gorgeous chaos because I’m the one riding to her rescue.

Mackenzie “Mac”

I often dreamed of what it would be like to stare into Bas’ blue eyes again. To hear his raspy voice whisper his love for me and feel his strong arms around me. After all, it’s always been in his embrace that I felt the safest.
In my dreams, he abolishes my sins and forgives me for breaking both our hearts.
But this is no dream.
I’m running from a nightmare and the one running with me, looks at me with enough anger to burn the world to ash.
Once upon a time, we were in love.
Once upon a time, it was us against the world.
Once upon a time, he didn’t look at me and see the Devil.
If only he knew the truth.
If only he knew the Devil was a broken angel with tattered wings.
An angel who sacrificed her heart and soul for him.

Excerpt

Nothing will scare the shit out of a man more than waking up and feeling a pair of eyes drilling a hole in the side of his head. Especially, when you’ve been trying your hardest to sleep with one eye open because there’s a mark out for your girl and her kid.

Bolting up, I rub the sleep from my eyes and stare back at Ryder.

“Buddy, what are you doing?”

Crossing his little arms against his chest, he glances next to me at his sleeping mother. Thank fucking Christ she’s covered. The last thing I need to explain is why his mother is naked in the bed with me, his uncle.

How’s that for a family tree?

“Why are you in my mom’s bed?”

Dragging the sheet up to my waist with one hand, I reach behind me and cup the back of my neck with the other.

“Well, that’s actually a funny story…”

It’s not funny at all.

Not even a little bit.

But telling Ryder his mother and I fucked like rabbits after she rubbed her pussy all over me and woke me up, really isn’t an option.

“How about I tell you over breakfast?” I suggest.

“Pancakes?”

I have no fucking idea how to make pancakes.

“How’s about a bowl of cereal?”

“Okay,” he says, uncrossing his arms. He doesn’t move and suddenly, I’m intimidated by the little boy wearing SpongeBob pajamas and a scowl on his face. When did that happen?

The day you decided you wanted to be enough of a man to make him a better one.

“All right then,” I say offering him a smile as I look towards the door. “Why don’t you get a head start?”

I’ll buy you a puppy…hell, I’ll buy you the whole damn litter if you just let me grab my shorts, kid.

Debating, he glances at his mom again.

“Should we wake mommy?”

“Fuck, no…eh, I mean….” my words trail as I swipe a hand over my face. “Let’s let her sleep.”

“Okay, we can surprise her with breakfast in bed.”

Yeah, sure, if you want to get a peep show.

“Sounds like a plan.”

He takes another minute before he finally exits the room. I wait until I hear his footsteps on the stairs before, I lose the sheet and dig a pair of sweats out of one of my six bags of clothes. As luck would have it the day I decide to move my shit in here, Ryder catches me in bed with his mom the next morning. I’m not sure how I’m going to explain this one. Mac and I haven’t talked about telling Ryder about us and we’ve been cautious around him. I’m not sure why. I’m not going anywhere, and neither are they.

Making my way to the door, I pause and look back at Mac.

A man can get used to that.

He can die happy.

“Uncle Bas!”

Pulling the door closed behind me, I head downstairs and enter the kitchen to find Ryder trying to clean spilled milk off the floor.

“What happened?”

“I’m sorry!”

Lifting his head, he meets my eyes and I can tell he’s struggling to hold back tears. That fucking does something to me. It breaks my heart is what it does.

“It was an accident,” he cries. He tears his eyes away from me and I watch his hands fumble as he pulls the paper towels off the roll.

“Ryder,” I rasp, crouching down beside him. Gently, I take the towels from his hand and place a finger under his chin, forcing his eyes back to mine. “It’s okay.”

“You’re not mad?”

“No,” I say hoarsely. “It’s just spilled milk, Ryder,” I add as I wipe his tears with my thumbs.

“My dad would’ve been mad.”

Biting the inside of my cheek, I control the anger simmering in my veins.

“I’m not him, Ryder,” I say with conviction.  “You never have to be afraid of me.” His blue eyes search mine and I pray he’s inherited his mother’s knack for reading me because they’re saying all the things I don’t know how to.

I love you.

I’ll jump off a cliff for you.

Run through fire for you.

I’ll kill for you.

Bleed and die for you.

Swallowing, I smooth down his hair and lean forward, kissing the top of his head.

“Let’s get this cleaned up and get started on making you and your mom breakfast.”

“We don’t have that much milk,” he says.

How fucking hard can it be to make pancakes?

“I thought you wanted pancakes,” I reply with a wink. His eyes light up and the smile he gives me is worth every bit of heartache that brought him into this world. I get it now. I understand what Mac meant when she said he was too precious to be labeled anything less than a blessing.

“Uncle Bas, I know you said I don’t have to be afraid of you but…”

“You don’t,” I assure him. “I would never hurt you. Never.”

“Does that mean you won’t hurt my mom either?”

Jesus.

It might not be my place, but I don’t give a fuck. It’s time Ryder, and I had a talk.

Man to little man.

Rising to my feet, I hold out my hand for him.

“C ’mere,” I tell him.

He places his little hand in mine and I pull him to his feet before leading him to the kitchen table. Sitting across from one another, we stare at each other.  I’m not sure if he’s looking at me with curiosity or if he’s sizing me up trying to decide if I’m the guy good enough for his mom.

“Why don’t you tell me what you’re thinking,” I suggest. “And remember, anything you ask me won’t make me angry.”

“Okay,” he says. “I don’t want anyone to hurt my mom. She smiles a lot and I like it.”

“She has a great smile,” I agree.

He nods.

“The best,” he whispers. Then as if a light bulb has gone off in his head, he looks at me with wide eyes. “If I promise not to be afraid will you promise not to take her smile away?”

“Ryder, I want you to pay close attention to what I’m going to tell you, can you do that for me?” I ask him as I lean over the table and level my eyes to his.

“I’ll try my hardest.”

“Fair enough,” I say, taking a deep breath. “Ain’t no one in this world going to take your mom’s smile away ever again nor will anyone hurt either of you. As long as I’m alive, you and your mom will always be safe and if I have a say in the matter, the both of you will keep sharing your smiles with me.”

“Does that mean you love her?”

“I’ve loved your mom for a really long time. What it means is I finally get a chance to prove to her and to you just how much I love you both.”

I let my words sink in for a minute before continuing.

“When a man loves a woman, he isn’t afraid of expressing it and his actions sometimes speak louder than his words. One day you’re going to be a man and you’re going to find a girl who knocks you off your feet. You won’t see her coming, you’ll ask yourself why she chose you and you’ll pray you never lose her. It’ll be the most exciting time of your life and the scariest too. You might make mistakes, but they’ll never be intentional because you’re going to think back to this conversation and remember how you wanted me to treat your mom.”

“I want you to be nice to her,” he whispers.

“I want you to be humble and kind,” I counter.

“Take her nice places,” he continues.

“Always hold the door for her,” I say.

“Tell her it’s going to be okay when she’s sad,” he adds.

“Do your best to nevermake her sad,” I counter.

“Make her smile,” he whispers.

“Cherish every smile she gives you,” I reply.

“Love her,” he pleads.

“Love her,” I agree.

A beat of silences passes between us before I hold out my hand.

“A man’s handshake is his word. It’s his promise,” I explain, tipping my chin to my hand, urging him to take it. Lifting his hand, he slides it into mine and he gives it a firm shake, sealing our promise to one another.

For him to grow up and be a good man.

For me to set the example by loving his mother.

I am hands down in love with this series! I adore MC series but this one is WONDERFUL! I love the passion, the second chance love story, and oh my goodness, Bas. Seriously, this book squeezed my heart so much. I adore Mac and Bas as a couple! I love the banter, the suspense and the passion that literally jumps off the page.

I would suggest reading the entire series from the beginning but this can be read as a standalone for sure. The complete series will give a new reader a great background on the characters. You will not be disappointed!

Captivated by Bethany-Kris…Blog Tour with Review

CAPTIVATED

by Bethany-Kris
Publication Date: July 9, 2018
Genres: Adult, Romantic Suspense, Organized Crime. Erotic Romance, Standalone

AVAILABLE NOW!

SYNOPSIS

A shadow meets the light …

When someone needs to disappear, the Chicago mob calls on Joe Rossi. A man who can move without a sound, and kill without a word, they don’t call him the Shadow for nothing.

This time, it’s a New York crime family in need of his skills, but it takes one glimpse of her to make him agree to the job.

Liliana Marcello is every inch a principessa della mafia. Her life has taught her to be wary of strangers, yet her ballet career contradicts everything by putting her on display.

It’s a man with a dark smile and a constantly changing demeanor that makes her feel safe again, but it’s the unknown that holds her back.

It takes one look …
One dance …
One word …
One smile to captivate a man.

And one second to kill a woman because of it, too.

Not all monsters hide in the shadows.
How are you supposed to see them coming?

CAPTIVATED MUSIC PLAYLIST

Sizzling, suspenseful, and sweet is how I would describe Captivated by Bethany-Kris. However, I enjoyed this book the most because I was not able to figure out the plot. Yes, I had some idea on how it would go but was pleasantly surprised as I continued to read. Bethany-Kris also wrote Joe, a mafia hitman, so well that I completely forgave him for being a killer. You will absolutely fall in love with this character as well.

Joe is summoned to New York to help the mafia bosses get rid of some high-profile people. It is in New York he sees the one of the boss’s daughter, Lilliana, and instantly is attracted. Now this is what I love about Captivated, it is not an instant fall in love with each other book filled with just sex scenes. Bethany-Kris takes her time writing the romance between Joe and Lilliana all the while adding in suspense. I have read a few books this year that have tried to combine these two genres together and I felt they did not flow as well as Captivated. The suspense did not feel like a second thought which was refreshing.

I will also admit having a hot mafia bad ass is always a bonus in a story. I love that Joe is tough but to those who are close to him, he is sweet and gentle. Lilliana is going through her own internal battles (I don’t want to give away some of the plot) but I like that Joe allows her to go through it. It is not just instantly written away by Bethany-Kris. This is for sure a hard copy worthy book.

Excerpt Reveal….Love Machine by Kendall Ryan

A best-friends-to lovers standalone romance from New York Times bestselling author Kendall Ryan.

After a rather uncomfortable ladies’ night involving a cucumber-wielding instructor with judgy eyes, I’m forced to admit my weaknesses. Rather than point blame at my lack of a sex life, I’m ready to roll up my sleeves and get to work.

As a junior executive who’s clawed her way up the corporate ladder, failure is not in my vocabulary. Confident and bold in other areas of my life, I have to admit it’s time to up my bedroom game.

Asking my friend Slate Cruz is really the only option. Slate is like a walking billboard for sex. The man gets more ass than a toilet seat. There’s no way I’ll want more from this playboy than a little inspiration to revive my inner sex kitten.

Except, what happens if I do?

“I can’t believe I struck out every single time,” Keaton says with a whine. “I tried all night and not one goddamn penis wanted me to touch it. God, my fucking feet hurt so bad.”

I loop my arm around her waist, partially to comfort her and partially to hold her up as we stagger down the sidewalk to her apartment. It’s almost two in the morning, and the streets are deserted. Only the predawn stars are watching over us.

“Don’t think of it as striking out. Think of it as . . .” I wave my hand, searching for a positive spin. “Being selective. You just didn’t meet a good match, and it’s better to go home alone than with the wrong guy.”

She growls loudly in frustration. “I’m notlooking for a friggin’ husband; I’m just trying to get laid! There’s no point in being picky. Face it, Slate, it’s not me who has the high standards here. Guys just don’t like me. End of story.”

I stop in my tracks. “That’s not true.”

She sways in my arms to face me with tipsy defiance. “Really? Because literally everything that happened tonight says different.”

“So you had one bad night? Big deal. Plenty of guys like you.”

“Prove it,” she insists, her eyes brimming with need and wounded pride.

Her body is so warm, her scent so sweet, and it all feels perfectly natural to just lean in and . . .

Our lips meet. She squeaks in surprise, but before I can pull away and apologize, she kisses me back. Hard.

Her hot, soft mouth crushes against mine, opening with an intense hunger, her tongue demanding entrance, and I can’t help devouring her right back. I couldn’t stop, even if I wanted to.

Why the hell haven’t I done this before? What have I been missing out on all these years?

All my reservations and doubts are swept away in a wave of desire. No overthinking, no self-doubt, just chemistry. Pure, primal instinct. Our tongues touch and my heart rate triples because, holy fuck . . . I’m kissing my best friend.

And, fuck me, I really, really like it.

We break the kiss, both flushed and breathing a little harder, a powerful new tension buzzing between us. Goddamn . . . just that one moment of contact was enough to send every drop of blood traveling from my brain straight to my dick.

Keaton’s never given me wood, not even once. Okay, that’s a lie. There was this one time that she rubbed my shoulders and her boob brushed my arm by accident, but that was just biology. That’s all that was.

“That was . . .” I pause.

It should have felt weird, like kissing my sister. I’ve always had a strictly platonic relationship with Keaton. But I can’t lie. It was perfect. Like a textbook-perfect kiss, chemistry and attraction, and just the right amount of tongue. And I want to do it again as soon as possible.

“Yeah,” Keaton murmurs. Her gaze has darkened. She licks her lips and glances up at her apartment building. “Want to come inside?”

I Think I Love You by Lauren Layne…..Release Day Blitz & Review

I Think I Love You

Ballantine Group; Loveswept | On Sale: July 10th, 2018 | ISBN: 9781101969557 | Pages 200 | Price: $4.99

A game of seduction between two best friends goes deliciously wrong in an irresistible Oxford Novel that brims with wit and sexual tension. Library Journal hails Layne’s work as “exemplary contemporary romance.”

Brit Robbins knows that dating in New York City is hard—she just hoped to have it mastered by age thirty. But after yet another promising suitor says they have no sparks, Brit decides it’s time to torch her dating game and try a new plan. And who better to coach Brit through the art of seduction than the guy who first gave her the “let’s be friends” card?

Hunter Cross has always figured there’s nothing his best friend Brit can do to surprise him. But Brit’s request is a surprise he doesn’t see coming—and one he’s definitely not prepared for. Hunter and Brit have always been careful to keep things perfectly platonic, but the fake dates and faux flirting are starting to feel like the real deal. And soon Hunter realizes he has taught Brit too well. Not only has she become an expert at seduction, the man becoming thoroughly seduced is him.

“I want you to teach me.”
The silence stretched on and on, until finally Brit forced herself to look up at Hunter.
“Teach you what?” His voice was kind but completely confused.
“How to seduce a guy.”
His head snapped back, and he inhaled through his nose. “No way.”
“Why not?” she said, giving an impatient little bounce of irritation on the couch. It was what she’d expected, but it was frustrating all the same. “You’re the perfect person.”
“How you figure?”
Ah. Now, this she was ready for. She and the girls had talked out this part of her argument, and Brit was armed and ready with her answer. Setting her glass aside, she began to count out the reasons on her fingers.
“For starters, you apparently have some sort of innate charisma. You said it yourself—women are physically attracted to you, even when you don’t want them to be. It’s the very opposite of my problem, and I want to figure out what the difference between us is.
“Second,” she continued. “You date. A lot. You’ve got a ton of experience, and you’re a guy’s guy. You know what makes them tick, especially in the dating world.”
He frowned. “I could name a half dozen other guys who also fit into those categories. Ask one of them. Hell, I’ll ask them for you.”
“There’s one more reason,” she pressed on, ignoring his objections. “You’re you. We’re us. I trust you in a way I don’t trust anyone else. Plus, you’re single. I can’t ask Lincoln, or Nick, or Cole. They could give me advice, probably, but they’re all married or involved with some of my closest friends. I can’t practice on them.”
Hunter choked on his drink. “What do you mean, practice?”
“We’re talking the art of seduction here,” she said practically. “I’m not an expert, obviously, but I know it means more than just words. It’s about looks, and touch, and … moves.
“Don’t you dare laugh at me,” she said quickly, lifting a finger in warning when his lips twitched.
“Moves?” he said, trying to hide the impending smile and failing. “Is this high school in the nineties?”
She leaned forward and gave him a not-so-gentle punch on the arm. “Will you help me or not?”
“Not.”
Brit scowled. “You said you’d do anything for me.”
“Yeah, but not teach you how to … mate.”
“Mate? Okay, that’s worse than moves. And it’s not so tawdry as that. I just need some pointers on how to get guys to stop viewing me as a pal. That’s all.”
“Oh, is that all?” He said it sarcastically, dragging a hand over his face. “It’s weird, Brit. You’re my friend. My closest friend.”
“Exactly the problem. Every other guy wants that role too.”
“Do I have competition in the friend department?” He smiled as he said it, but she noticed he was watching her as though he cared about the answer.
“Of course not. You’re still my number one.”
“You’re flattering me now.”
“Is it working?” she asked hopefully.
“Nope.”

Reading the last book in a series you have enjoyed is always bittersweet. While this series did start off as just ok for me, the books only got better and better.

I Think I Love You was the perfect ending to this series and I loved every bit of this book. This can be read as a standalone and it will make you fall in love with these characters so much that you will want to go back and read the other books.

I won’t go into any details because the blurb pretty much tells you what to expect as for plot. However, it’s how everything plays out that makes this book so good. It all sounds cliché – friends to lovers, he teaches her how to seduced and ends up being the one to be seduced in the end. But it’s how Lauren plays this out that just sucks you in.

The sexiness, the playfulness, the teasing – all of the interactions between Brit and Hunter are so real and fluid. Lauren writes her characters to where everything just feels natural and true to life. Lauren’s writing style is what makes her stories stand out from the rest and it’s why I will always read her books.

Lauren makes falling in love so beautiful and sweet – it’s impossible to not fall in love with her characters and their stories.

Lauren Layne is a USA Today bestselling author of contemporary romance novels. Prior to becoming a writer, she worked in e-commerce and Web marketing. In 2011 Lauren and her husband moved from Seattle to New York City, where she decided to pursue a full-time writing career. It took six months to get her first book deal (despite Lauren’s ardent assurances to her husband that it would take only three). Since then, she’s gone on to publish ten books, including those in the bestselling Sex, Love & Stiletto series, with more stories always in the works. Lauren currently lives in Chicago with her husband and their spoiled Pomeranian. When she’s not writing, you’ll find her at happy hour, running at a doggedly slow pace, or trying to straighten her naturally curly hair.

My Review:

Kissing Jenna is the newest work in author Kristen Proby’s Big Sky series (a series that ties in with her Love Under the Big Sky series – so I kind of consider them all one big series in my mind) and I have to say, while I usually never like to pick favorites of a series (c’mon it’s like picking your favorite child lol!), I have to admit, this may be my top pick!  Man, oh man, I loved this book!

Jenna is my kind of gal.  Honest, loyal, independent, funny, and open.  She doesn’t mince words. Snows what she wants and goes after it. Shed does what she says and says what she does.  I adored her as a character and would SO hang out with her!

Christian is equally amazing.  He’s all alpha with a soft side I swooned over from the very start.  He’s got a big heart, and although it’s guarded, when he opens up to Jenna it is so special and it made me love him even more.

Together the heat and chemistry between them is delicious.  They clicked from the very beginning and to watch the physical attraction grow into something so much deeper was amazing.  I freaking love these two!

I have to say, I also love seeing the characters we’ve grown to love over the span of this series continue to pop into each other’s books.  It’s like a big family I always love visiting with.  Oh, and I have to give a shoutout to Ms. Proby and her descriptions of the town and the book’s surroundings.  I was lucky enough to have been to Montana twice and she makes me feel as if I’m back there again while reading.  It’s such a treat!

I’m already looking forward to more form this series *dreamy sigh* Thank you, Ms. Proby, for another amazing read!

Five Loves

Meet Kristen:

1P0A9162

Kristen was born and raised in a small resort town in her beloved Montana. In her mid-twenties, she decided to stretch her wings and move to the Pacific Northwest, where she made her home for more than a dozen years.

During that time, Kristen wrote many romance novels and joined organizations such as RWA and other small writing groups. She spent countless hours in workshops, and more mornings than she can count up before the dawn so she could write before going to work. She submitted many manuscripts to agents and editors alike, but was always told no. In the summer of 2012, the self-publishing scene was new and thriving, and Kristen had one goal: to publish just one book. It was something she longed to cross off of her bucket list.

Not only did she publish one book, she’s since published close to thirty titles, many of which have hit the USA Today, New York Times and Wall Street Journal Bestsellers lists. She continues to self publish, best known for her With Me In Seattle and Boudreaux series, and is also proud to work with William Morrow, a division of HarperCollins, with the Fusion Series.

Kristen and her husband, John, make their home in her hometown of Whitefish, Montana with their two pugs and two cats.

Release Day Blitz….Murder Girl by Lisa Renee Jones

Title: Murder Girl
Author: Lisa Renee Jones
Release Date: July 10, 2018
Series: Lilah Love #2
New York Times bestselling author Lisa Renee Jones returns with the second book in her electrifying series featuring Lilah Love, an FBI profiler who doesn’t fight her dark side—she embraces it.
It’s Lilah Love’s job to inhabit a killer’s mind. The unapologetically tough FBI profiler is very comfortable there. But her latest case is making her head spin. It’s a string of brutal assassinations carried out across the country, each tied to a mysterious tattoo. Body by body, she’s followed the clues all the way back to her hometown. And every step of the way, the killer has been following her.
Here, beneath the glamour of the privileged Hamptons community, is a secret long buried but never forgotten. It’s bigger than Lilah. It’s powerful enough to escape the reach of the FBI. And it’s more personal than anyone can imagine. Because it’s hiding in Lilah’s own past. To fight it, she’s forced to turn to her lethally tempting ex, Kane Mendez. He’s an expert at bringing out Lilah’s darkest impulses. If she plans to survive, she’s going to need them.**You MUST read book one, MURDER NOTES, prior to reading this book.

I enter the building and ignore the pretty brunette behind the triangle-shaped stone desk and head to the stairs.
“Excuse me,” she calls out, but I ignore her. Kane knows I’m coming. He has people watching me and this building. He knows I’m in the building by now. I don’t need “sweet thing” down there to announce me in yet another way. I’m at the top of the stairs before she finishes her fourth excuse me, which is now a bit louder, as if I just haven’t heard her the other three times. I turn down the hallway and walk toward the desk outside Kane’s office where Tabitha sits, minus any more originality today than the last time I was here. She’s still bleached blonde, with her fake, giant-ass boobs hanging out of a silk blouse with numerous buttons undone that turn it into a slut show that could have been professional.
I pass her without a word, approaching Kane’s double doors, when she says, “Drama follows you, Lilah Love.”
“No,” I say without looking at her. “Dead bodies follow me.” I glance over my shoulder at her. “You should remember that.”
And with that statement that really had no purpose other than it felt really damn good, I open Kane’s door.
I step inside Kane’s office and find him sitting behind his desk, just in time to hear him say, “She’s here,” into his intercom and then release the button.
With exaggerated drama that I reserve for moments when I want to be a smart-ass or simply announce my fucking presence, I use my body to shut the door, but I don’t hang out and wait for it to grow roots. I rotate and charge toward Kane and that King Mendez desk of his that he doesn’t get to use as shelter. By the time I round the wooden atrocity, he’s standing, towering over me in a charcoal suit and a purple shirt with black stripes and some sort of black-and-gray tie. It’s flashy, expensive, and works on him when it would not on nine out of ten other people. But then, while I keep a low profile—aside from the door drama, of course—and favor my black nondescript looks, his entire persona says “look at me” with the intended message of “I have nothing to hide.” A lie he tells the world and, after he drugged me to keep me from knowing what happened last night, apparently me.
We stand there for a beat or ten without words before he says, “Lilah,” and the very fact that he says it like sex is all it takes for me to snap.
I slap him in the face, because my bare fist is too small to hurt him the way his jaw would hurt me. It’s also a disgrace to a man to be slapped, which is why one UFC fighter I’ve watched here and there does it to his opponents. And Kane is my opponent. He turns his head with the force of the blow, my palm stinging in the aftermath.
“Well now, beautiful,” he says, fixing me with a brown-eyed stare. “I know you like it rough, but is now the time? We both have questions we want answered.”
I slap him again, and this time he catches my wrist before I pull back. I try to slap him with my free hand, and he catches it as well, this time before contact. “You get two, not three.”
My gaze flicks to the handprint on his right cheek that matches the one on the left before I meet his stare and say, “Two was pretty damn satisfying.”
“Why didn’t you tell me about your stalker?” he demands, his question low, lethal, his anger banked just beneath the surface, while mine is the cherry on top of every lie he’s told me. “Because we both know that’s what we’re dealing with here,” he adds.
“Let go of me, Kane,” I bite out, my voice taut with impatience. No. Make that a desire to smack him again.
“After you tell me about your stalker and the notes.”
“Let go of me, Kane,” I repeat slowly, “or my next move will be a knee to your family jewels. And I promise you, it will be hard enough that neither of us will have to worry about our urge to fuck ever again.” My jaw sets hard, but he doesn’t release me. “You drugged me,” I remind him, “and then searched my house before leaving me with a gun that I was too drugged to use. So if you think I won’t do it—”
He releases me but doesn’t step back. “I didn’t leave you with a gun you couldn’t use. I kept you at my house until sunrise, and I left a team guarding your place, front and back. I protected you, like I always do.”
I don’t analyze why that makes me angrier. That’s for later. For now, there is this: “I’d pull my gun on you and back you off, Kane, but I swore the next time I did that, I’d shoot you. And I need information from you.”
“I’m all yours, beautiful,” he says, holding his hands out. “I always am.” He motions to the sitting area to his left and behind him. “Let’s sit and make this peaceful.”
“Peaceful, my ass,” I say.

The Lord of Lost Causes by Kate Pearce…Review

Synopsis:

.
Struggling to support her family after her husband’s death, Caroline Harding attracts the attention of the ruthless Captain Francis Grafton who offers her a devil’s bargain to pay back her debts to him. Outwitting her enigmatic employer and unwillingly gaining his approval significantly changes her life for the better, but can she win his loyalty and his heart when he appears to care for nothing but profit?
.

My Review:

.
Little secret: my very favorite romance genre is the tiny little niche of historical erotic romance. There’s something about the prim and proper perception of historicals that gives an extra edge of naughty and forbidden when the sex is especially hot, and I just love the contrast and urgency that comes along with it. Kate Pearce is one of the big names in the genre, and you can always expect stories that push the limits, in a good way.
With The Lord of Lost Causes, Pearce strikes out on her own with a new series and a delicious, enemies-to-lovers tale caught up in the period between Regency England and the Industrial Revolution of the Victorian era. It’s a fascinating time not seen or heard of much in historical romance, and it lends a gritty backdrop to the proceedings, one that’s appropriate for the setup—one that shockingly begins with the hero Francis blackmailing Caroline, the heroine, into becoming his mistress.
Caroline is a widow and the eldest sister of a trio, along with their eccentric mother, and Caroline is essentially the head of the household. It’s a tough era, when women had little power to their name, and the family is in dire straits. So when Caroline learns just who her demanding landlord is, she may have to choose an unholy bargain to save her family.
In some ways, this premise strikes back to the days of the bodice ripper romance—so if that’s your thing, you’ll love it. Pearce doesn’t shy away from the unconventional or going outside the norm. She has a talent for getting to the heart of the characters and making less than desirable circumstances work out for good to craft a lasting, memorable romance. Francis and Caroline have an immediate spark and antagonistic banter, and their dirty secret makes for some steamy scenes! The circumstances behind the setting will speak to readers even today, as issues of class and society are woven seamlessly into the romance. It’s a time and a place that I want more of, since not all is rosy and Pearce is guaranteed to keep us on our toes.
If this is your kind of story, Kate Pearce is not to be missed, and The Lord of Lost Causes is a really wonderful start to a series I can’t wait to see more from.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

With over 1.5 million books sold world wide, Laurelin Paige is a New York Times, Wall Street Journal and USA Today Bestselling Author. She is a sucker for a good romance and gets giddy anytime there’s kissing, much to the embarrassment of her three daughters. Her husband doesn’t seem to complain, however.
