Exclusive Excerpt:

“I see the way you look at her, Edric. Your eyes follow her, you dance the longest dances with her, and now, you’re sending her presents. I’ve known you too long not to know that this is unlike you. You’re not Kael. You don’t fraternize with the Affiliates who parade themselves in front of you, hoping for a scrap of your time. Yet here you are with this Cyrene. What is she to you?” Daufina asked.

At her question, Edric paced the long room. She watched him through the silence and wondered what he was thinking.

“You told me once that you would inform me if you wanted to take a mistress—”

“I do not want to take a mistress,” Edric snapped.

Daufina straightened in surprise. He never raised his voice with her.

“I apologize,” he said with a sigh. “I didn’t mean to startle you.”

“Just talk to me.”

“Would you believe me if I said that I didn’t want anything to do with her?” His eyes were pleading.

“No,” Daufina admitted.

“No,” he agreed. “No, I wouldn’t either. I keep telling myself that I’m acting like a fool, Daufina, but then I see her again.” He stroked his chin as he tried to find the words. “She has this pull. When I’m with her, the throne slips away, and I’m just a man with a beautiful woman. It both intrigues and terrifies me.” He splayed his hands before him. “I can never be anything but the king…but when I’m with her, I want to be.”

REVIEW

T. had contacted me wanting to know if I could read her debut novel in exchange for an honest review. Here I am a little over 2 months later finally reading it (she knew I was slightly busy with other commitments) and damnit I wish I would have read this sooner!

Alexa Crushed is definitely a book that needs to get into more hands than it has and pronto!

Alexa has some earth shattering events happen with her family and her strength and strong-will are tested after her the biggest blow – her parents dying. She has her best friends around to help her through everything and not let the drown in her sorrows.

Alexa’s best friend, Devin may have dropped from her life periodically but he will always be there when it matters most. As Alexa is struggling to get through her latest crushing blow, he shows up and gives her that stability she needs. And he comes in right as someone else vanishes completely.

There are some other variables that come into play and keep Alexa on her toes. Alexa is a sweet girl who has the best upbringing anyone could ask her. But it’s others that want to threaten that happiness.

T. does a great job of throwing quiet a few twists and turns into this beautiful story that keep you guessing. You know that something isn’t right, but what exactly it is, remains to be seen.

I truly enjoyed reading this book. It was definitely a quick, but really exciting read for me. T. paints Alexa’s life beautifully and you can feel her happiness and pain as she goes through it. The suspense is built up just perfectly and has you not so patiently waiting to see what comes next!!

Great debut novel by T.R. Cupak!! I am very excited to read the next book!!

AUTHOR BIO:

TR

T.R. Cupak was born and raised in the suburbs of a Bay Area city in California. She was the closet nerd who hid her love of reading and writing short stories and poetry when she was younger. Back then it wasn’t considered cool to be into those types of activities for pleasure, whereas today you have TV shows, movies and books that glamourize that being a nerd is actually cool.  T. lives in a quiet, little, country town south of where she grew up. She is happily married to an amazing man who supports her in everything she does and spoils her rotten. They have a crazy little Shih Tzu named Harley. He’s their fur-baby and even though he’s a pain in the arse most days, they love the little guy. She has an obsession with cars, especially fast ones. She enjoys her music louder than anyone should. Admittedly it’s to drown out hearing her own singing voice, or lack thereof. When she’s not at work or busy writing you can find her curled up reading a book on her Kindle with a glass of wine or Dirty Shirley. T. lost touch with her creative side and stepped off the path of all things written in her early twenties. Six years ago, her passion for reading was rekindled. She began to utilize reading as a way to escape everyday chaos. Late 2013 she began journal writing. After a couple of months of journaling T. realized that this form of writing wasn’t keeping her interest nor was it helping her to relax. After that realization settled in she changed the direction of her writing. Her creative aspirations were flowing once again and she happily embraced it. As her fingers started to dance across her keyboard she began to see her fictional characters begin to breathe life. Writing was only supposed to be a way for the new author to relax, but a story was born and T.R. Cupak is excited to be releasing her self-published debut novel, Alexa Crushed.

Your Voice Is All I Hear by Leah Scheier……Spotlight & Review

9781492614418

Title: Your Voice is All I Hear

Author: Leah Scheier

Pubdate: September 1st, 2015

ISBN: 9781492614418

Tradepaper/$9.99 ● Ages 14+

“I was the one he trusted. I was the one he loved, the only one who believed him, even when his own mother had locked him up and thrown away the key. And now, I was going to pass down the white tiled hallway, knock on his doctor’s office door, slam his secret notebook on her desk and make her read it, make her understand what he was hiding, make her see what only I had seen.”

April won’t let Jonah go without a fight. He’s her boyfriend—her best friend. She’ll do anything to keep him safe. But as Jonah slips into a dark depression, trying to escape the traumatic past that haunts him, April is torn. To protect Jonah, she risks losing everything: family, friends, an opportunity to attend a prestigious music school. How much must she sacrifice? And will her voice be loud enough to drown out the dissenters—and the ones in his head?

 REVIEW

I honestly am not sure how to start this review. I knew getting into this book that it dealt with mental illness, but what I wasn’t expecting was the depth at which it took me.

Mental illness is unfortunately something that is very easily overlooked and misunderstood by our society as a whole. It gets overshadowed by other diseases such as cancer, leukemia, or many other diseases that people see as treatable. I’m not saying those illnesses are any less important, but they aren’t viewed the same as mental illness is. This book really hits home in the fact that mental illness isn’t something anyone should be afraid to hide or be afraid to discuss with others.

Leah Scheier does a superb job of giving a great light on this subject. And she does it in a setting where most people are more than likely to judge the person before trying to understand them.

April is a sophomore in high school and sort of a loner. She’s not picked on or anything by other students, but she doesn’t really fit into any of the crowds. She’s always had one best friend who is now going to a new school, so her sophomore year at high school will be more boring than usual with truly no-one to talk to.

Jonah is new to the school. He moved to the area after his best friend passed away earlier in the year. You can tell from the beginning, he’s like April in that he just wants to blend into the crowd and not really be noticed.

As their friendship/relationship progresses, April sees different changes in Jonah but doesn’t know what to make of it. It’s not until he really starts to have episodes where he isn’t making sense and is finally admitted to a psych ward that she starts to put things together.

Throughout the whole time that Jonah is admitted and is working on becoming “healthy” again – April doesn’t leave his side. Jonah goes through so much during his time there; different medications, different dosages, art therapy, talking to a therapist, etc. It’s not easy watching someone you love, not be themselves.  It’s difficult to slowly see the life in their eyes go blank. It’s hard to understand what is going on inside their head, when even they can’t explain it to you.

The part of the book that broke me was right before Jonah was admitted a second time. It really smacks you in the face when you see how easily someone can hide what they are really feeling inside. How easily we misinterpret a few words they said to us during a conversation. How a loved can go from seeming to be on the healthy path when in their reality, they are only sinking deeper and deeper.

I loved at the end of the book when April gave her history presentation to her class. How something so simple, opened up the eyes of not just peers, but anyone who will read this book. It gives you a new perspective on things. And the new doctor who treated Jonah the second time around really understood what it meant to heal and learn from this illness The treatment wasn’t to numb him with drugs; it was to help Jonah understand why his illness is able to take over and how he can fix.

This is one book that will forever stick with me. I will recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading. It will open your eyes, one way or another.

An Excerpt:

I KNOW MY WAY AROUND THE MENTAL HOSPITAL. I doubt most of the girls in my neighborhood could claim that, even though many of us lived just a few minutes from its leafy, sterile grounds, and some of us picnicked on the lawn outside its gate during summer break.

By the end of tenth grade, I knew Shady Grove Hospital better than I knew my school. I knew that the security guard’s name was Carla and that she’d worked at her depressing post since the place was built. I knew the quiet path behind the topiary garden where I could wait until visiting hours began and she let me in. I’d memorized the shape and color of his shadow behind the dark-red curtains, and I knew where I had to stand so he could see me from his eleventh-story window. From that distant spot, I could even guess how well the medicine was working for him that day; I could tell what kind of visit it would be by counting the paces of his shadow.

I had the place mapped out, his daily routine memorized, the doctors’ names and call schedule, every pointless detail carefully recorded in his special little book. He’d given me those notes as if they were classified secrets, the papers wrapped in strips of hospital linen sealed together with bubble gum, long wads of partially chewed Wrigley’s tied into a crisscrossed mesh. That tat- tered spiral notebook was crammed with data he’d gathered over months: patients’ names and histories, nurses’ phone numbers, the cleaning crew’s shift hours. I would never know how these bits of information came together for him or how he even found them out. But somewhere in these random nothings, he’d put together a story for me, a clue of how to get to him, a coded message that, for some reason, he believed only I could read. I was the one he trusted, the only one who had not betrayed him. I was the one he loved, the only one who believed him, even when his own mother had locked him up and thrown away the key.

And now, nearly three months after they’d taken him away, I was finally ready. I was going to march up to the security window, look into the tired guard’s blurry eyes, state my name and the name of the patient I was visiting, and hear the buzz and click of the locked gate sliding open. I was going to walk down the white- tiled hallway, knock on his doctor’s office door, slam his secret notebook on her desk, and make her read it, make her understand what he was hiding, make her see what only I had seen.

I was finally going to do it. I was going to betray him.

“Do you enjoy the view?” King Edric asked.

“The rains have made the gardens bloom, and it warms my heart to see it so.”

“It is good to know that the gardener approves of the work.”

Cyrene laughed lightly. “I have not gardened in a month’s time. I fear I can no longer call myself a gardener.”

She remembered when she had told the king of her interest in gardening at the last feast day almost a week ago. After that dance, Queen Kaliana added a list of plants to her assignment, forcing her to reread every page she had already dredged through for information. It had wasted two entire days.

“Perhaps I could change that,” he offered.

He directed her down the staircase and into the courtyard below lit solely by the setting sun in the distance.

Her stomach churned at the thought of him offering assistance to any of her needs. It was like what she had read in her children’s books of the tales of Leifs, and how one request would be necessitated by a much larger sacrifice. Her biggest sacrifice at the present moment was time. She wanted nothing more than to finish her work on agriculture and prove that she could get moved somewhere that involved traveling…and adventure.

“On the contrary, My King, I am fully enthralled in my Affiliate duties, and believe that gardening would only distract me from my work.”

“You cannot spare one afternoon to spend in my gardens?” His blue-gray eyes searched her face. “If you have half the green thumb you suggest, then it would be delightful to have you on the grounds.”

She swallowed. “I really have much work to accomplish before we go on Processional.”

“I could speak to the Queen and request it be lessened,” he whispered into the evening air.

“No!” It was the first time he had ever admitted to discussing her with the Queen. Hearing him admit it aloud made her voice come out strangled.

Cyrene missed her footing on the pebble path and stumbled forward a pace. Edric steadied her. He turned his body to face her in the middle of the garden, and her breath caught at the sight of him in the setting sun.

“You do not wish me to speak to the Queen?”

“I spoke out of turn. Please forgive me.”

“I cannot forgive that which I do not understand. Did the Queen somehow offend you?”

Cyrene shook her head. “I fear that the Queen does not…like me.”

Edric laughed softly, taking one of her hands in his own. “Oh Cyrene, I believe that the Queen likes no one but herself.”

Cyrene found that she, too, could laugh at his comment.

“Now, tell me what the Queen has done to make you believe that she dislikes you.”

“It’s nothing, my King.” She turned her face away from his. She couldn’t possibly tell him the real reason.

“Enough to infuriate you, which is enough for me.”

When she looked back up into his blue-gray eyes she felt that same magnetic pull between them. Somehow she had not realized how close they were standing. His hand felt warm against her bare skin. His body only a few inches away from her. His breath hot on her face. Her heart contracted in her chest, and she forced herself to respond.

“She speaks of…of your interference, as if…as if you…”

Time stretched between them, and she thought for a split second he might move even closer to her. She was rooted in place, captivated by his gaze.

“Yes?” His other hand drifted to her waist, and she was suddenly on fire.

Their breath mingled together as she murmured, “As if you favor me.”

“And do you think that?”

“I…”

“Yes?” he asked, stepping closer.

“I think you have your queen,” she breathed.

Excerpt

I watched as Asher hurried over to where I was standing. Cain rolled his eyes before joining the opposite team. I made room as Asher crowded between me and the boy standing next to me.

“What are we playing?” he asked.

“Dodgeball,” I said.

“What’s that?” he asked.

“Seriously? You’ve never played dodgeball before?”

He shook his head.

“Basically, everyone attacks each other with those balls in the center of the gym. The goal is to hit as many people as you can without getting hit yourself. Once you’re hit, you’re out.”

“Seems simple enough,” he said.

I glanced at the muscles in his arms. I had no doubt that hurtling balls at innocent students would be easy for him. “Just don’t hurt anyone.”

He grinned when he noticed me staring at his arms. “I wouldn’t.”

Mr. Reynolds blew the whistle, and everyone took off at a full sprint toward the balls—that is, everyone, except for Amanda and me. We were both smart enough to stay against the wall as balls started flying.

Over half of both teams were hit within the first five minutes. After they were gone, things got harder for me. Without as many bodies to aim for, I soon became a target. I ducked and jumped out of the way as several students tossed balls at me. One hit right beside my head, and I winced. Whoever had thrown that one meant business.

I looked up just in time to dodge another ball flying right at me. It hit the wall just as hard as the other one. I glanced at the opposing team and noticed Jenny glaring at me. Of course it had been her.

She grabbed another ball and threw it. I dropped to the ground just in time.

The next few minutes passed in a blur as I dodged ball after ball. Almost all of them were from Jenny. Finally, she managed to hit me. Luckily for me, it was in the chest instead of the face. I glared at her before walking toward the bleachers to sit down with Amanda. I winced as another ball hit me in the back.

“Whoops. Sorry, Ella. I didn’t realize you were already out!” Jenny shouted sweetly.

“Skank,” I muttered under my breath as I sat down.

Two seconds later, I heard Jenny shriek in protest. I looked up just in time to see a ball nailing her in the chest. She frowned across the room at Asher before walking to the bleachers. Asher shot me a smile before turning his attention back to the game. I couldn’t help but smile back. He’d seen what she did to me, and he’d gone after her. I was really starting to like Asher.

For the rest of the game, my attention was split between Asher and Cain. I whistled under my breath as Cain nailed another guy hard enough to knock him down. The boy didn’t mess around. I counted my blessings that it was Jenny who’d hit me instead of him.

Finally, it was just Asher and Cain still standing. I looked back and forth between the brothers. They both openly glared at each other.

“This should be entertaining,” Amanda said from beside me.

“My money’s on Asher,” I muttered.

From across the room, Asher turned and grinned at me like he’d heard what I just said.

I rolled my eyes at myself. That’s ridiculous.

He was twenty feet away from me in a roomful of noisy seniors, and I hadn’t spoken very loud.

“Quit standing there, looking at each other, and throw the balls!” Mr. Reynolds shouted at the brothers.

Cain’s glare disappeared, and his trademark smirk returned. He grabbed a ball off the floor and threw it in Asher’s direction. Asher jumped out of the way just in time and grabbed a ball of his own. He threw it at Cain, and I tensed as it bounced off the wall. He’d thrown it with a lot more force than necessary.

“Come on, brother. That all you got?” Cain taunted as he tossed a ball at Asher.

On and on it went.

Both boys were throwing their balls without holding back in the slightest. The class went silent as we watched the epic dodgeball battle in front of us. My mouth dropped open when Cain did a flip in midair to avoid Asher’s ball. As soon as his feet touched the ground, he tossed a ball at Asher. It missed by inches and hit the wall next to the mats. I was only a few feet away, and my eyes widened in disbelief when I noticed the indent in the wall.

That’s impossible.

There was no way he could have thrown the ball hard enough to dent the wall. I was pretty sure the walls were made of concrete.

Cain growled in frustration when he saw that the ball had missed. Asher smirked as he picked up two balls at once. I watched in awe as he launched both of them at Cain. Cain dodged the first one, but the second made contact. It hit his lower stomach with enough force that he flew backward several feet.

Damn. That’s going to leave one heck of a bruise.

“Now, that’s how you play dodgeball!” Mr. Reynolds shouted.

Cain stood back up. Neither brother paid any attention to the teacher. Both were locked in a glaring contest.

Finally, Asher broke it. He glanced over at me and then back at Cain. “That all you got, brother?”

Review

Once again, K.A. delivers another amazing story!!
Ultimate Temptations is about Heaven and Hell but with a slight twist on it.  Ella’s life completely changes one day but not the way she expects.  Cain and Asher enter her life when things are spiraling out of control.  But it’s the other actions when no-one else is around but her that make her question everything.   And that is all I am giving you about the story and even that I feel may too much.
K.A. does a perfect job of building up the plot of this story and giving us the background on the characters and each of their stories.  I love the new spin she puts on Heaven and Hell and how everything in between works.  I was immediately drawn into this story from the very beginning.  There are certain things that will be quite obvious to any reader, but it’s how Kelly writes that keeps you hooked and wanting to know where the next step leads.  There are quite a few things going on and you definitely need to pay attention to EVERYTHING!  While certain things seem obvious, they are other twists and turns that will leave you with even more questions as the story progresses.
“Do not fear me. You will be stronger that anything they’ve ever seen.  This is the gift I give you.”
K.A. really knows how to paint a picture with her words.  I am really excited to see where the next book takes us in this adventure of other realms.
