Mixed Up Love by Natasha Madison….Excerpt & Review

Hunter

When my business partner asked me to do him a favor, I had no idea he was sending me on a blind date his mother arranged for him. I walked in the bar, saw the woman drinking her third martini, and knew I was in for an eventful night.

After the unexpected second date, she didn’t know my real name or who I really was. By that time, the lie was too far gone, and I wanted her too much to admit the truth.

Laney

It’s not every day you find out your ex-boyfriend is engaged.

I shouldn’t have agreed to the blind date. My mother insisted, and I wasn’t in any position to turn down a night out.

I will admit, I definitely shouldn’t have ordered that fourth martini before said blind date even arrived.

The man turned out to be swoon worthy, handsome, condescending—a perfect distraction. Then I found out he was a liar.

I’ve never been in over my head to this degree.

Then again, I’ve never been in love.

I pull up to the front door, and the valet meets me at my door once I stop. “Good evening, sir,” he says once I open my door.

“Yeah, I won’t be here long,” I tell him as I get out, not bothering to take off my sunglasses when I hand him the keys.

“No worries, sir. It will be here when you are ready,” he says, handing me the ticket for later. I put it in the inside pocket of my suit jacket. I walk inside to the hostess table, where a woman who looks like she is eighteen stands smiling.

“How may I help you?” she asks sweetly. I stop and look around to see if I might recognize the woman I’m here to meet, even though I’ve never met her. I spot a couple of women at the bar, but I instinctively know they aren’t her. I also check for exits. It’s not my fault; it’s just instilled in me.

Looking to the left, I don’t see anyone sitting alone, but then I look to the right, and I see her. I don’t know why I know it’s her, but I just do. With curly long blond hair, she downs a martini, then picks up another one and brings it to her mouth. I spot a waiter walking with two more martinis on his tray, and I’m not surprised when I see him approaching her table. “Great,” I say under my breath. “I found her,” I tell the hostess and start walking toward the table. She spots me and watches my every move. Luckily, the glasses I’m wearing stop her from seeing my eyes.

The closer I get to her, the more my pulse speeds up. What the fuck? This is weird. I look around maybe to see if something else is piquing my interest or maybe I spotted something to elevate my pulse, but no, it’s her. The fact that a gorgeous woman is sitting by herself and drinking like a fish is enough to get any man’s adrenaline pumping. Isn’t it?

“Are you Laney?” I ask, taking off my glasses, and my gray eyes finally meet her blue ones. She opens her mouth, expecting, I think, something to come out, but nothing does. I continue looking around to see if anyone is watching her, and it’s no surprise that I spot two guys at the bar sizing her up.

“Here are two more.” The waiter smiles at her, putting two more glasses down on the table and taking the two now empty ones away. She laughs nervously, and I want to reach out and trip him when he walks away.

“It isn’t what it looks like.” Her soft voice breaks me out of my plan, and I turn back to her as she smiles at me, causing my heartbeat to skyrocket. The collar of my shirt suddenly feels tight, but it’s not even buttoned.

“Really? I find it hard to believe,” I finally say. Looking around again, I spot the same two guys in suits sitting at the bar watching her. This time, one of them spots me and looks back down at his drink. “It looks like you’re sitting here waiting for something bad to happen.” I pull out the chair and sit in front of her.

“Um.” She still doesn’t say anything.

Mixed Up Love is a very quick romance – both with how fast I read it and how quickly everything happens.

I really am not sure exactly what to say as I enjoyed the book but I really wish it was longer and the story more developed.

Hunter and Laney meet on a blind date and everything after that happens within 2 weeks. Everything just seemed to move along too fast for my taste. While I could see the attraction between the two, the love part just seemed too far fetched.

I really enjoyed the banter and the witty comments with all the characters involved. The side characters definitely helped add to the enjoyment of the book. I’ll be honest and state that I wish the side characters could have had their own books instead of their stories tying into this one and everyone practically getting their HEA in this book. I know that was author’s decision and I’m not taking that into consideration on my rating, but I am just saying that would have been nice.

Overall, it was very quick romance that was cute and sweet. I wish there was more development on the plot and that things took place over a longer time period.

When her nose isn’t buried in a book, or her fingers flying across a keyboard writing, she’s in the kitchen creating gourmet meals. You can find her, in four inch heels no less, in the car chauffeuring kids, or possibly with her husband scheduling his business trips. It’s a good thing her characters do what she says, because even her Labrador doesn’t listen to her…

Allie was so furious, she could barely put two words together. “You don’t get to just decide that we’re having a conversation and haul me out here to do it.”
“If I was going to haul you anywhere, it’d be over my shoulder.”
Her body clenched at the thought of him doing exactly that, but she fought her reaction back. “You are insufferable. Do you know when the last time I had a vacation was? Ten goddamn years ago when I was still in freaking high school and on spring break. Ten. Years. Becka had to twist my arm to get me here, but I was enjoying myself—”
“I know exactly how thoroughly you were enjoying yourself.”
She ignored that because if she tried to deny it, she’d be a red-faced liar. “That changes nothing. The point is that I’m not enjoying myself now, and the only one to blame for that is you.” She went to push him back a step, but her hands had a will of their own. They stayed on his chest, and she sucked in a breath at how warm his skin was. The man might be a corporate suit, but he looked perfectly at home in his shorts without a shirt on here in the growing darkness near the beach. It was almost enough to forget all the reasons she never wanted to see him again.
Allie stepped closer and lowered her voice. “Nothing you say can make me believe you’re anything but a goddamn shark.”
“Who said I’m trying to convince you of anything?” The words brushed her mouth as he leaned down, just a little. “I am a shark, Allie. I’ve never pretended to be anything else.”
She started to call him a liar, but he was telling the truth. He hadn’t tried to seduce her with sweet words to get her into his bed—he’d offered her exactly what she wanted in as many words. Black-and-white. Simple.
It wasn’t simple at all.
“I despise you.”
“You want me.” His hands rested lightly on her hips. “It tears you up inside that you crave my cock, but you can’t fight it no matter how hard you try.” He backed her up, step by slow step, until she bumped a tree. Roman kept coming, the side of his face brushing hers. “Did you think about how good it’d feel to have my fingers sliding into these yoga pants?”
“No.”
“Who’s the liar now, Allie?” His lips caressed her earlobe. “I’d love a private yoga session. Just us. No friends, no instructors, no clothes. How long do you think we’d last before I was on my back and you were riding my cock?”
She couldn’t breathe. Her skin felt too tight, as if it were several sizes too small, and her core pulsed in time with her racing heart. “I would never—”
“No, Allie. No more lies between us. You’re pissed that I’m here—I get that—and you’re even more pissed that you want me. Trust me, I know the feeling. I was never supposed to fuck you, and if I’d known who you were…”
She leaned back enough to look at his face—or what she could see of it in the darkness. “If you’d known who I was, you wouldn’t have gone there with me.”
Roman cursed. “Even if I’d known your name, that wouldn’t have stopped me from wanting you. Needing you.”
She stroked her hands down his chest to the waistband of his shorts. “Do you need me now?”
“I never stopped.”
This was the worst idea. She needed her head clear, and it was nothing but muddled around Roman. He was too big, too beautiful, too overpowering. Even now, she leaned forward, the few inches between them too much distance. He let her, his hands on her hips branding her—but not trying to guide her. Allie inhaled deeply. “Do you drug your cologne? Because, seriously, how am I supposed to think straight when you smell so good?”
He chuckled. “I’m not wearing any.”
He was gorgeous and a god in the bedroom, and he had to smell good naturally. Because of course. “I don’t like you.”
“You don’t know me.”
She could argue that, but it didn’t feel completely accurate. Allie traced the waistband of his shorts with her fingers. She shouldn’t…but she was going to. She unbuttoned his shorts and slipped her hand in to grip his cock. “I don’t have to know you—I know this.”
“You’re playing with fire.”
“Maybe.” Definitely. If she was smart, she’d release him, walk away and spend the rest of her vacation in as close to bliss as she could get, throwing herself into relaxation before she had to go back to reality. She stroked him again, liking the way his body went tense but his hands stayed still on her hips.
As if he was waiting for permission.
The realization sent a thrill through her. She kept stroking his cock, teasing him. “Did you really think it would be that easy?”
“What would?” He spoke through gritted teeth, and her body gave another thrill of pleasure.
“Getting your way.” She squeezed him around the base and nudged his pants down a little farther so she could cup his balls with her free hand. “You thought you’d show up here, interrupt my vacation and, what? I’d fall all over myself to give you exactly what you wanted?”
Roman released one of her hips and braced his hand on the tree behind her. The move brought him closer to her, but not so close that he impeded her movements. She stroked him harder as he slid his cheek against hers, his breathing hitching with every downstroke. He nipped her earlobe. “Isn’t that exactly what happened last night?”
She glared and gave his balls a squeeze that was just shy of vicious. “You’re awfully cocky for someone who’s got their nether bits in my hands.”
“They’re very capable hands.” He shifted to press butterfly kisses along her jaw and down her neck even as his hand on her hip squeezed her. “Don’t stop.”
“I should.” She didn’t. “I should stop right now and leave you with a wicked case of blue balls.” Why was her breath coming as harshly as his? He’d barely touched her, but having his cock in her hands and him so close… Intoxicating. There was no other word for it.
Roman gave her collarbone an openmouthed kiss and dragged his hand up her side to palm her breast. “I’ll just go back to my villa and jack myself off thinking of your sweet pussy. Not as good as the real thing—nothing is—but you gave me more than enough inspiration to get the job done.” He tugged the strap of her tank top off her shoulder. It was one of those things with a built-in bra, so the motion freed her breast. He repeated the move with the other side, and she shivered as the breeze coming in off the water teased her nipples. “Beautiful,” Roman murmured.
“You go overboard with the compliments.” She kept up her leisurely stroking. It was like the rest of the world ceased to exist outside their little sphere. It was just her and Roman, driving each other crazy.
“I give credit where credit is due.” He bent and sucked one nipple into his mouth. The position meant she had to let go of his cock, which she did with reluctance. He cupped her through her yoga pants, the coolness of the tree against her back only highlighting how warm his body was. “If I slipped my hand in here, would I find you wet and wanting? I think so.” He traced a single finger up the seam of the pants—right over her clit. “I think having my cock in your hands turned you on as much as the fact that we’re ten yards away from the bar and anyone coming up from the beach will get the show of their life.”
She pushed back against him even as her hips rolled into his touch. “That’s not true.”
“Liar.” She felt more than heard the word as his breath caressed her neck. “You get off on this as much as I do.” Another stroke through the fabric. “Would you take my cock right here, right now?”
She started to say yes, but common sense reared its ugly head. “I’m not fucking you without a condom.”
“Mmm.” He kissed her neck. “I know.” Roman pulled her pants down in a swift movement. She started to protest, but he went to his knees in front of her and yanked her foot free. Oh. He looped one leg over his shoulder and she caught the glimpse of white teeth when he grinned. “Have a little faith, Allie. I’m not a complete monster.” And then his mouth was on her pussy and she didn’t have the breath to argue.

Make Me Crave is the second book in Kate’s Make Me series, which I would describe as short erotic romances. I did not read the first and still enjoyed this one.

This book read very quickly and what I would surmise as day beach read that will definitely leave you hot – so be by a pool. LOL

I won’t go into details because of how short the book is – I would end up surmising the entire thing. What I will say is that this book will appeal to some and to others (like myself) will be just be ok. It’s not that I did not enjoy the story, but I wanted more depth. So be prepared for a very fast paced book with what I would consider a “high level” plot line.

Katee is a magnificent writer and I love reading her other series and books. This is definitely a different side to her writing that many will enjoy for summer reading.

Bare by Sarah Robinson….Release Day Blitz & Review

Today we have the release blitz for Sarah Robinson’s BARE! Check it out and grab your copy today!

Title: BARE: A Hollywood Romance

Author: Sarah Robinson

Series: Exposed, Book 2

Genre: Contemporary Romance, Standalone

About BARE:

Following the popular series debut—NUDES was praised as “passionate, emotional and uplifting” by #1 New York Times Bestselling Author Lauren Blakely—contemporary romance author Sarah Robinson weaves a new standalone story where a second chance at romance is found on a Hollywood film set and secrets always have a way of being…exposed.

Reed Scott is the hottest actor in LA…

Being a Hollywood heartthrob has its perks, and I’ve damn sure enjoyed every one of them, both on and off the silver screen. The tabloids loved every second of exploiting my privacy, chronicling my mistakes in ink for the whole world to see. Accepting the lead role in a romantic dance film was guaranteed to make me a box office hit and help me rewrite my image, until the choreographer hired to train me turned out to be the only woman I’d ever loved and lost.

As beautiful and enticing as ever, Tegan walks in and reminds me of the worst mistake I’ve ever made. She should hate me, and now she has the power to destroy everything I am.

Tegan Reynolds is picking up the pieces…

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice…never going to happen. I fell in love with Reed Scott once and it nearly killed me—literally. The last thing I want to do now is teach him how to dance, but I need this job and there’s no way I’m letting him take yet another thing away from me.

Reed is in my world now, and this time we’re dancing by my rules.

Bare is a standalone in Robinson’s Nude series; no need to read the first in order to read this one.

This book didn’t wow me like the first one did. If you saw my face right now, I have my lips sort of scrunched up on one side and I am thinking to myself “I was hoping for more.” It missed the mark for me but wasn’t terrible.

Bare is a second chance romance for Teagan and Reed. They were college sweethearts who were both aiming for fame, but in different directions. And instead of talking things out, Reed leaves her high and dry.

Many years later, they are brought back together for a film production and it’s like old flames rekindling – that fire never died out. But the trust is gone. Teagan holds a lot of anger and resentment towards Reed but Reed never stopped loving her.

While these two try to work their shit out, once again, the lack of communication because a barrier for them. This is where the whole plot line was a miss for me. These two have great chemistry (those scenes were spot on) but when it comes to communicating between each other, they totally suck. And that frustrates me beyond anything, especially with older, mature characters.

Anyway, you still get the fun stuff of a Hollywood novel – the acting, agents, paparazzi, etc to make the story entertaining all the way around. There were parts that Sarah did a great job with and that’s what kept me continuing on with the story. I have a feeling this was more a personal miss for me and that more people will enjoy this book more than I did.

Even though this one wasn’t my fave of the series so far, that won’t stop me from reading the next one.

Exclusive Excerpt:

Am I cursed? Teagan stared at herself in the mirror of her small apartment bathroom. She felt cursed. Reed-Scott-freaking-cursed.

Life certainly hadn’t handed her the easiest go, and now, just when she’d thought things were finally turning around because she’d landed a fantastic job as a film choreographer, fate was still proving it had other plans for her. This job was supposed to be her big break—well, break-ish. Sure, it wasn’t what she’d wanted out of her life, but her dreams were no longer an option.

And this job? Most people would kill for it. So, she was choosing to be grateful.

She had to choose to be grateful a lot, actually. If she didn’t, then life would have gotten the better of her years ago. Teagan glanced down at her legs, tracing a finger across the long scar that stretched from her knee to her hip. She tried to hide it under leggings and skirts, but it wasn’t always possible.

When she’d almost died in a car accident at the age of twenty-one, she’d thought she’d never walk again. Hell, the doctors had told her exactly that. And dancing? That was an impossibility.

The years and years she’d spent training to become a professional dancer had all been wiped away in less time than it took for that car to slam hers into a ditch. Despite the doctor’s predictions that her wheelchair would become a permanent fixture, though, she’d proved them all wrong. She’d spent years learning to walk, and then dance, again. Sure, she’d probably never have the agility to become the famous dancer she’d always dreamed of being, but she could at least teach. And with that, she’d found a way to keep doing what she loved…even if it was not exactly what she loved.

So, she chose to be grateful.

But seeing Reed Scott again? The man who made her believe in everlasting, soul-deep, earth shattering love and then left her standing alone at the altar on their wedding day? The man who had left her just to star in a movie that would make him famous?

She was not grateful for that—or for him—one bit.

Teagan finished putting on the last touches of her makeup then changed into a new pair of leggings and a leotard. Glancing one last time in the mirror, she fluffed out her wavy brown hair nervously. As much as she might hate him, she found herself wanting to look her best for him anyway. Make him eat his heart out. Make him regret ever leaving her like that in the first place.

She swallowed, trying to push away her frustration. That didn’t seem possible right now, though. Sighing, Teagan grabbed her car keys off the small table by her front door and gave one last glance around the small Los Angeles apartment she called home. Benson, her incredibly fat tabby cat, was lounging on the windowsill, lazily yawning and watching her. “Bye, Benson. Be good.”

He didn’t even blink at her. He’d probably still be lying in that exact same spot when she came home later.

Teagan blew him a kiss then headed out, locking her front door carefully behind her. Within a few minutes, she was behind the wheel of her car and heading toward the studio. It was still dark outside, but she didn’t mind one bit. She enjoyed early mornings when the world was quiet and the roads were clearer. Driving was still something that made her a little tense after her car accident, and traffic in Los Angeles was always horrendous. But, at five o’clock in the morning, it was a lot more manageable and didn’t make her feel so…terrified.

Luckily, her commute was short and she arrived on set twenty minutes later. She headed straight to the studio where she’d told Reed to meet her, but he wasn’t there yet, which she’d expected since she was a bit early. Placing her dance bag on the shelf to one side of the studio, she pulled out her heel dancer shoes with a cute buckle T-strap over the top of her foot and put them on. She pulled on a loose fitting, light sweater over her leotard for some coverage, since it reached almost to the bottom of her ass.

Next, she began to shimmy out of her leggings, since she was able to work a lot better in her leotard without restriction to her legs. She got down to her knees before she realized that being bare legged would reveal the scar on her leg. Quickly, she slid them back up her legs.

“Shit.”

Teagan whirled around, looking for the person who’d just broken the silence around her.

Reed Scott. Of course.

“You scared the crap out of me,” she told him, grateful that he hadn’t been able to see her scar from where he was standing for the brief moment her leggings had been down.

“Sorry,” he replied, clearly making an effort to look anywhere but at her. “I didn’t know you’d be…uh, I mean, I wasn’t expecting…”

She rolled her eyes. Actors were so dramatic. “I’m not getting naked, Reed. I was just, uh, putting on my leggings to dance.”

“Sure. Right. Yeah.” He was rambling, clutching the gym bag over his shoulder. “So, time to get started?”

“Yep. Put your stuff on the shelf and we’ll get started,” she instructed, doing her best to ignore the butterflies fluttering in her stomach at the very sight of him. Fuck, he looked even better than he’d looked the last time she’d seen him. Tall, broad shoulders, olive skin under thick black hair with a scruffy beard she remembered was very soft. And those eyes…God, the way those light green eyes pierced through her.

He stood you up at the altar, she reminded herself. For a damn movie.

“Sure.” He headed toward her and placed his bag on the shelf. “What are we practicing today?”

“It’s a pretty short routine today, actually. It shouldn’t take us too long.” Though she doubted he’d be the quickest learner after his warning yesterday. “Ready?”

He turned around to look at her, his eyes trailing down her body in a way that made her heart pound faster and faster. Suddenly his gaze stopped, pausing on her legs.

Her heart pounded, terrified he could see through her thin leggings to the bump of her scar. But he said nothing, and his gaze kept traveling. She was safe.

Honestly, she was a little surprised he didn’t already know about her accident. It hadn’t been a secret. Everyone in her life knew, and she’d certainly expected someone to pass along the message. Or for him to check in, even once.

She’d waited for him in the hospital, expecting him to come. Expecting him to apologize. Expecting him to beg her forgiveness, realize what an idiot he had been and take her back, care for her, return her to health with his love and affection.

That hadn’t really worked out.

Finally, his eyes returned to his face, and his tongue slid across his bottom lip. “You look…damn, Teag. You look amazing.”

“Listen, Reed,” she began, setting her jaw and sticking out her chin. “We work together. That’s it. You don’t get to look at me like that anymore.”

Reed looked startled, taken aback at her abruptness. Then the saddest look she’d ever seen passed over his face. “You’re right. I’m sorry.”

“Let’s get started.” She moved to the center of the studio. “I’ll show you today’s sequence, and then we’ll go through it step by step. Okay?”

He nodded, but said nothing.

Carefully, she posed herself in the center of the room with her toes pointed and her arms around her waist. In one slick move, she sidestepped and kicked one leg out to her left, flipping her hair with the motion. She then tucked her foot, her knee pointed out horizontally from her body and spun in a circle.

On her second spin around, she kicked up high, like an incredibly tall karate kick. When her foot touched back down on the ground, she lunged to the right and threw her arms out, tossing back her head with the motion. She curved her spine outwards, pulling her stomach in as she moved her arms in a circular motion toward herself.

She twirled then, spinning on the tips of her toes while keeping her eyes on one stationary spot so she didn’t get dizzy. After her fourth spin, she shoved her arms down by her sides and lifted her chin. With that, she spun back in the direction she’d just come from and leaped multiple times across the room with her arms out and her fingers pointed.

Finally, she came down on one foot and spun in several circles before coming to a stop in front of Reed. “Annnnnd, that’s it.”

“Shit, that looked complicated as hell,” he admitted. “Though you looked incredible doing it.”

She ignored his compliment. Or, rather, she tried. Admittedly, her heart pounded a little harder. But, that was being ignored for now. “Let’s go over the first step.” She repeated the side steps and kicking her leg to the left. “Just like that. Let’s see what you can do.”

Reed followed in her footsteps, and honestly, it wasn’t terrible. It wasn’t great either. “Like that?”

“Close,” she admitted. “Let’s go through it again.”

Yup – there is always one of us in the crowd and I am usually that one. :/ But bare with me and I will explain myself.

Ok, so I apparently missed the boat on this one. I see so many 5 stars with this book and I feel like I missed something. Or maybe it was just bad timing in reading this book for me. I was so looking forward to reading this book, that I think maybe too much time passed for me between the books and I lost the “oomph” I had from the last book.

I remember Closer so well and was super excited to start this one. But as I was reading this book, somewhere in between 25% and 50%, I felt the book go flat and lost the momentum I had going in. Teller and Ella started to annoy me with their tendencies and felt like they were moving nowhere – rinse, wash, repeat but just in different atmospheres. UGH

It was until the huge bomb was dropped that things sort of picked up for me, but at this point, I had almost DNF the book but refused to only because I enjoyed Closer so much and wanted to see where Teller and Ella ended up. Everything seemed to move at a better pace for me and these two stopped doing their dysfunctional dance and moved forward.

I have to say that Mary’s writing is unique and beautiful. It’s another reason why I stuck with this story. I think the time frame between these two books is what hurt me the most – not that I forgot anything that happened, but the intense feelings I felt after finishing Closer, were gone. 🙁

Mary does do a great job of keeping her characters as they are, but I felt there were portions that things were dragged out, which hurt the book for me. I love the dysfunction of Teller and Ella – that’s what makes this duet stand out from others. They aren’t cookie cutter and they stay true to themselves. That’s another reason why I continued on with this book. But it wasn’t enough to make me feel everything I felt in that first book.

Overall, I am sure if these two books are read back to back, I have no doubt they will be perfect and people will love them. For me, it was a letdown from book one and I hate that, I really do. But that won’t stop me from reading any other books by Mary. I truly believe this was just the case of it’s me, not the book. And truly, that sucks.

Licks is the third book in an inner-connected series (Legs, Stub and Licks). Each one can definitely be read as a standalone and I have to say they each carry a different weight within the contemporary romance genre. Licks has more of the drama, angst and suspense in the story.

Licks is a two-plot story that was interesting to see play out. Gwen and August were friends growing up but when things got in the way that they couldn’t resolved properly because of being young and immature, they missed out on a lot of years til now.

Gwen and her friends, Ainsley and Rachel made a pact on their birthday (they share the same date) to fulfill a major goal in their life before their next birthday. Gwen’s just so happened to me finding out who her father is. But she now has less than 36hours to fulfill that goal and she is no closer now than before. And then in walks August.

August has not seen or spoken to Gwen since her birthday nine years ago. Some major shit went down that he was not able to get over. He quit college and went on to become a musician. He became a huge hit in Europe and moved there. But now he’s back to take care of some personal things and one them having to deal with Gwen. But it’s not what you think.

I have to say that I loved the overall plot line on this one. However, I think it was the delivery that has me not loving this one. I had an extremely hard time connecting to this one and feeling these characters. It’s not Kelly’s writing, but I felt that maybe there was too much inner monologue and that hurt the flow of things. I found myself skimming a lot because I got bored of what the character was thinking. But it did not keep me from moving forward – I never once wanted to stop. I had to know how everything turned out in the end.

Overall, it was just an ok read for me. It is told from both Gwen and August’ POVs so that definitely helped with the story too. I just missed the connection somewhere and felt something was missing. But just because this book didn’t work me, doesn’t mean it won’t work for you. I have read plenty of her other books and loved them. This was just an unfortunate miss for me.

The Swedish Prince by Karina Halle….Release Blitz

TheSwedishPrinceSBPR

The Swedish Prince, an all-new emotional standalone by Karina Halle is now LIVE!

Swedish Prince AMAZON

I never believed in fairy-tales.

Never held out for Prince Charming.

Growing up poor in small-town California as the oldest of six siblings, I knew I would never ride off into the sunset with anyone. That was even more apparent when a senseless tragedy took the lives of my parents, forcing me to become the sole guardian of our dysfunctional household at the mere age of twenty-three.

Then a fateful encounter literally brought Prince Charming to my dusty doorstep.

At first I thought Viktor was just your average businessman passing through, albeit obscenely handsome, six-foot-five, blue-eyed, and mysteriously rich.

But soon I discovered the truth behind Viktor’s façade.

Beneath his quiet, enigmatic gaze and cocky charm, is a man who is running away from who he really is. A role he’d rather not fulfill.

He is Viktor of House Nordin, His Royal Highness, The Crown Prince of Sweden.

Yet uncovering Viktor’s secret was only the first step.

I didn’t expect to fall in love with him.

I didn’t expect to have my whole life turned upside down.

When you’re from two different worlds, can your hearts meet somewhere in the middle?

Or do happily-ever-afters only exist in fairy-tales?

The Swedish Prince is a standalone romance inspired by Roman Holiday.

My Review:

Royals are all the rage. And I gotta say, I like it. If romance is all about fantasy, what better way to escape than with a real-life book prince or princess hero or heroine? The latest trend in romance has seen a really strong showing, from stellar authors like Emma Chase and Lilah Pace, and now Karina Halle throws her take in the ring with The Swedish Prince, and she can always be counted on for gripping, page-turning romance, while this is also a slight detour for her.
.
My personal favorite thing about Karina Halle is when I affectionately dub her the Queen of Travel Romance. She writes the best books about exotic locations, faraway places, and well-researched travels and incorporates beautiful love stories into them, and I can’t get enough. She’s able to do that here too, as the eponymous title suggests, with Swedish royalty, as Prince Viktor, always the spare never the heir, is thrust in line to the throne when his older brother dies tragically and all eyes turn to Viktor. With such an abrupt alteration to his plans and his future, even a prince sometimes needs a time out, so while on holiday in America, Viktor stumbles upon Maggie Mayhem McPherson, who’s experienced more than a little tragedy of her own and is now primary guardian of her five younger brothers and sisters.
.
Viktor and Maggie seem to be complete opposites, but they have more in common than meets the eye, and theirs is a fairy-tale romance. If you love your romance of the sweep-you-off-your-feet variety, you will love this. The story really shines once we’re back in Sweden—snowy winter, royal palace, Scandinavian history. There’s even potential for more stories with Viktor’s royal friends, Norwegian Prince Magnus and Denmark’s King Aksel, and if we’re headed back across the pond, I’m all in.

—-

White Knight is a standalone in the same world as King of Code, with its own beginning, middle, and end. You don’t need to read anything else to read White Knight.

Oh how I wanted to love this book more than I did. I love C.D. Reiss’s descriptive and detailed writing – it helps bring the stories to life. But for the life of me, this one just felt like it needed more, if that were even possible.

Christopher and Catherine had a sweet, young romance at 16 years old that was over too soon for them. Fast forward 13 years later and things have changed. Catherine still loves in her childhood home helping those in her community thrive, while Christopher is now rolling in the money in New York from hedge funds he creates. But neither feel completely fulfilled.

There are parts of this book that I really enjoyed – the characters and their small home town feel. Christine hit the nail on the head with this part. Loved everything about it and the feel I got from it. I enjoyed the beginning of this book so much when we were given flashbacks of their past that helped pave the way to where they are today. What I did not like was later in the book where a lot was told that happened and were not given those experiences to live through with the characters. That really hurt in me believing this whole HEA and their ending.

This book didn’t quite captivate my attention was much as King of Codes did (both can be read as standalones) and I just had this overall “meh” feeling about it. I felt like I was gipped on a lot later in the book and left me wanting so much more from these two.

For me, this book wasn’t great and it wasn’t terrible. It’s a slow, reminiscent story of young love when adults find each later on in life. Give it a try, you may enjoy it more than I did.

Excerpt:

I crossed the train tracks, looking both ways as if the freight ran on a thoroughfare. It was a few steps to the rows of mobile homes that defined that side of Barrington.

The playground was in a little clearing just west of the center of the trailers. My fingertips were cold, but the rest of my body thrummed and pulsed so hard that I made my own heat. I told myself I didn’t know what to expect from this meeting, but if I didn’t know what to expect, I knew what to hope, and they were pretty much the same thing.

“Catherine!” Chris wasn’t loud, but the excitement in his voice made him sound as if he were shouting.

“Chris?” I spun around, looking for him in the darkness.

And on a three-quarter turn, he crashed into me, all lips and hands, digging his fingertips into the muscles of my back as he pulled me close. I tasted the minty toothpaste in his mouth and thought he brushed his teeth for me. He kissed me as if he would never kiss me again. He kissed me as if this was the last kiss he would ever have in his life. As if he wanted to eat me alive. I’d given over my freedom and my choice to this thing with him, to this moment, to this stupid set of choices that would ruin me forever. As surely as the sun would rise, I was the designer of my own destruction.

I wanted to be destroyed by that kiss.

When Chris took my hand, I imagined I could feel the blood pulsing through the veins, the cells in his skin. I imagined that when my nerve endings vibrated at his touch, they connected to his somehow.

Everything felt new. I was discovering that my body had routes between one place and another that I never knew existed. I never knew that when a man touched my hand or kissed my nipples, I could feel it between my legs.

There was a click behind the tree line, and he stopped kissing me with a jerk. We froze long enough for him to smile.

About the Author

CD Reiss is a New York Times bestseller. She still has to chop wood and carry water, which was buried in the fine print. Her lawyer is working it out with God but in the meantime, if you call and she doesn’t pick up she’s at the well hauling buckets.

Born in New York City, she moved to Hollywood, California to get her master’s degree in screenwriting from USC. In case you want to know, that went nowhere but it did give her a big enough ego to write novels.

She’s frequently referred to as the Shakespeare of Smut which is flattering but hasn’t ever gotten her out of chopping that cord of wood.

If you meet her in person, you should call her Christine.

GETITON_TEASER3

Get It On is book five in this series, but can be read as a standalone. Each book is about a particular couple, but if you want to get the whole feeling and follow the underlying story (saving The Fix on Sixth), then read them in order.

Get It on is Tyree’s book. He’s the owner of Fix on Sixth and is now relying on his friends and community to save the bar. As a man who’s been fate’s punching bag, dealing with the loss of something is nothing to Tyree. However, he’s not about to let this one go without a fight and he is putting his all into saving his bar. Then in walks Eva and his focus becomes shifted.

Eva and Tyree’s story could so easily have been one of those perfect slow burns, but alas, that was not the case with this one (in part because it’s told as part of short novella series). It was still enjoyable, but I just felt things were too rushed at times.

Julie, as always, writes amazing third person POV’s stories – she is one of the few authors that I do read who write in 3rd person. It’s extremely hard to right characters in 3rd person POV and allow the reader to still connect to the characters and the story but Julie does it flawlessly.

Eva had always thought that Tyree died in war and when these two are face to face again, the chemistry has changed on bit. But it’s Tyree’s war between his head and heart that cause a lot of problems in the moving forward. This is where I wished we had more to the story and the results played out in a slower motion – I just felt things were wrapped up to quickly and perfectly. As much as he was confused on things, he was able to sort them all out quickly with no problems.

Overall, it’s not my favorite in the series, but it was still a good read.

I feel like I am hitting some sort of book slump because I keep finding myself in the minority on books where everyone else is loving them. It’s sort of frustrating because I feel like I am missing something. LOL But it is what it is.

Secret Lucidity was a good book. I enjoyed it. But I wasn’t “wow’d” by it like other readers. It was another right down the middle enjoyable read. Secret Lucidity was a slow burn romance for me. I was hoping to get more angst but I still didn’t mind the overall story. It’s a forbidden student/teacher romance and I just felt that there wasn’t a huge build up for that drama.

Cam is going through a very traumatic moment in her life when David comes in to her life. She never expected him or for things to go the way they did. I did like how Ms. Blair had the romance between Cam and David move forward and play out. I will say that I personally felt that in the beginning it almost felt like she relied on David because he filled the role the one person she just lost. However, it felt natural for them and nothing felt forced after things became open between the two of them.

There were certain moments where things was glazed over too. I understand that certain parts are import to the overall story, but if you aren’t going to clarify certain parts in a scene, then don’t mention them at all because it sort of leaves things open and the whole story doesn’t feel complete.

The secondary characters were definitely a needed part of this story. They helped add the drama to the situation and kept the story interesting. Cam’s mother was a piece of work but I felt her actions were glazed over the most and wanted a bit more from that aspect.

Overall, I did enjoy the story. I did want more angst and drama added in the overall story because it just felt like slow burn romance with some bits of angst here and there.

2.5 Stars
It’s rare, if not possibly a first, that we’ve posted a review where the rating wasn’t 3 stars or higher.  But I chose to share my review because while I find myself warring between a 2 or 3 star review, I still want fellow readers to see where I struggled to enjoy this book where others loved it. And even though this book didn’t wow me, I want others to still give this book a read.

I requested to review this book because I not only saw all the raving about it, but I also read great reviews about this author in particular. Gods and Monsters is the first book I have read from Saffron and to be honest, for all the amazing reviews about her, I was let down with this book.

I am right down the middle for this book. And because I had such high hopes, this book just deflated even more for me. I am definitely in the minority on this one and I am fine with that. This is just my opinion and how I was left feeling after reading this book. A three star rating in my opinion is still a decent book to read. But I will be honest, I struggled rating this one – so I settled for an overall rating of 2.5 stars.

The first part of this book started off brilliantly and I could see why people rated this book so high. Hell, after the first part, I was rating this book a 5 star read. I loved the story line, loved the characters and how everything was coming together.

The second part totally killed the vibes I was feeling in the first half and left me wanting more. No, more isn’t the right word. It left me a bit dry despite all the damn sex going on. I found myself stopping a lot while reading the second half and truly not giving a shit how this ended, I really didn’t. However, I pushed forward and did finish the book.

While I did not care for how the story played itself out, that’s not the reason for my rating. I won’t rate a book because I didn’t like that the author went a different route than what I wanted. My rating is because the book lost it’s mojo and excitement for me. I no longer felt vested in the characters and no longer cared what happened to them. And for me that just took the book from 5 stars to somewhere between 2 and 3 stars.

Overall, I did enjoy this author’s writing style and will give her other books a look. This book wasn’t my fave but I’d still urge anyone to give it a go.  Many others enjoyed this book,I sadly wasn’t one if them.  I am hoping that Sky and Duke are given their own book and that I will read.

I breathe in deep through my nose and out through my mouth—an exercise my therapist taught me when I started to feel like I was going to fall apart. I can slowly feel myself start to relax when the doorbell rings.

Sighing, I get up. My housemates must’ve forgotten their keys or be carrying too many bags to unlock the door.

I glance through the window, but no one is there.

Another doorbell ditch?

My blood runs cold as I open the door.

An envelope is sitting on our mat. The world turns mute as the blood rushes to my ears. Bending down, I scoop up the envelope. It’s addressed to Isaac. And it looks like exactly the one that came for Sonny.

No…

I turn it over and pull out the note. My hands are shaking as I read:

YOUR TURN

“Isaac!” rips from my throat.

“What?” he calls from his room down the hall. My voice is trapped in my throat as I look up and down the street. There are still a few folks leaving flowers, looking at the makeshift memorial in front of our house. Did one of them do this? Did one of them see who left the note? I feel so exposed. Vulnerable.

I draw back inside and shut the door, trembling.

Isaac’s footsteps thud from his bedroom into the foyer. “Lylah, what?” His face falls and his eyes widen as he sees what’s in my hand. “Is that another note?”

Nodding, I hand it to him.

“Jesus,” he whispers. “Who was it addressed to?”

I look up at him, my vision blurring with tears. “You.”

You Will Be Mine is a YA thriller/suspense that revolves around a group of college kids living together.

As you will be able to tell, I am torn on how to write this review. While I did enjoy the book, I wasn’t overly excited with everything going on. And once again, it’s because I struggle with connecting to the characters. The storyline itself is interesting but the lack of character development hurt the story overall for me.

As I said the storyline was interesting; Lylah and her friends start receiving anonymous letters that are addressed to a particular person. When each person starts winding up dead, things start pointing to one person. While I was able to easily figure out who the murderer was, it was still interesting to watch the mystery play out.

Natasha does a good job of throwing in different aspects and people’s reactions to things to keep the “suspects” list open to so many. I have to say that the mannerisms in which the friends die is quite gruesome and that will leave the reader doubting a lot of their suspects.

I do enjoy Natasha’s writing. She always keeps the story itself gripping and entertaining. I may only rate her books 3 stars, but I do enjoy reading them and will continue to do so.

Overall, it was a good read for me. If you enjoy a good mystery and suspense thriller (and don’t hate that you will possibly figure out the killer) this book will be for you. Just don’t expect a lot of depth into the characters.
