About COLD MALICE

Available September 12th

ASAC Steve (Mac) McKenzie is out to prove himself by leading a task force investigating a series of murders in the heart of Washington, DC. His undercover work in an antigovernment compound twenty years earlier is related—as is the sweet, innocent girl he befriended back then. Now that girl is a beautiful woman, and she has something to hide.

Tess Fallon spent a lifetime trying to outrun her family’s brand of bigotry, but someone is threatening her anonymity by using the anniversary of her father’s death to carry out evil crimes and she’s terrified her younger brother is involved. She sets out to find the truth and comes face-to-face with a man she once idolized, a man she thought long dead. As the crimes escalate it becomes obvious the killer has an agenda, and Tess and Mac are running out of time to stop him.

Will the perpetrator use a decades-old dream of revolution to attack the federal government? And will the fact that Tess and Mac have fallen hard for each other give a cold-hearted killer the power to destroy them both?

“You want me to provide an alibi?” The glow drained from her cheeks.

Tension sizzled through the air as Mac watched her body language to see if it matched her words. “You know I have to ask.”

She crossed her arms, every line of her body defensive and resentful. “I don’t remember exactly where I was on Monday morning.” Her eyes moved up and right.

Shit. She was lying. People lied to cops and FBI agents all the time. The question was, what did she have to hide?

“But this morning, when the DJ was shot”— She’d already put together what the cops were officially refusing to admit—“ I was in a coffee shop and then on the Metro.”

“Got people who can verify that?”

She gave him the name of a coffee shop near Tenleytown and the metro stop where she’d got off the train.

“Don’t tell them why you’re asking,” she said. “Please.”

He grimaced.

She cradled her forehead in her hand and looked like she suddenly felt ill. Because, really, what were they going to think when the FBI started asking questions about her movements? He made himself push on. She wasn’t his friend or his date. He had a job to do.

“Any idea who might be committing these murders?”

“I told you. I’m not in touch with anyone from that life anymore.” “What about your brother?”

“Eddie?” An ugly laugh escaped. “I don’t have anything to do with that wacko.”

Eddie Hines was still incarcerated in the Idaho State Correctional Center. They’d pulled a bullet matched to his gun out of a SWAT officer’s vertebrae. The policeman had been lucky to not be paralyzed. To prove that point the officer turned up in a borrowed wheelchair and a “here but for the grace of God” sign every time Eddie came up for parole.

“I meant your other brother.”

She reached out to hold on to the back of the couch. “He doesn’t know about any of this.”

Mac frowned. “You mean the murders?”

“No,” she bit out sharply. “Any of it. Not the Pioneers. Not Kodiak Compound. Not who our family really is. Nothing.” Her fists clenched and unclenched. “And I want it to stay that way.”

What the hell? “Where does he think he comes from?”

“I told him we were the children of Trudy’s second-cousin on her mom’s side. I told him our parents died up in Oregon and Trudy took us in.”

“You lied to him about his parents?” Holy shit.

She put her hand on her hip. “Don’t use that judgmental tone with me, Assistant Special Agent in Charge Steve McKenzie.”

“Sorry, Tess.” He strode toward her until they were only a foot apart. “I didn’t realize you had the monopoly on changing your identity.”

She flinched and blinked rapidly as if fighting tears. “If anyone should understand why I wanted to leave that ugliness behind it should be you. You need to leave. Now.”

When he didn’t move she went to the front door and opened it, waiting for him to take the hint. Damn. He’d blown it. When he stood in front of her again he opened his mouth to speak.

She beat him to it. “Don’t leave town, right?” Bitterness was rife in the lines around her mouth. In the bite of her tone.

“I was going to say that if anyone from Kodiak gets in touch—”

“They won’t.”

“But if they do—”

“They won’t!” She appeared on the verge of crying, but fighting it.

He’d seen all sorts of tears during his time on the job. It was always the ones that didn’t fall that affected him most.

He pulled a business card out of his pocket, took her hand and folded her fingers over it. The skin on skin contact made something unexpected spread through his body. Despite her anger she felt it too— he could tell by the way her pupils widened and her lips parted on a gasp. She tried to pull away but he didn’t let go and he didn’t back down.

Instead he pulled her toward him into a stiff embrace. His breath brushed her hair as he kissed the top of her head— like she was still that little girl he’d known all those years ago.

“I’m not the bad guy here, Tess,” he murmured against her hair.

She kept her head bowed, and eyes closed, hand pressed like a fiery brand against his heart.

“Neither am I, but no one seems to care.”

She pulled away, and he let her go. Then he walked away just like he had nearly twenty years ago.

He sat in his car, staring at the house, knowing she was inside watching him right back.

The unexpected attraction had caught him off guard. He’d forgotten what it felt like to actually want someone. But he couldn’t afford to start something with the daughter of one of the most notorious white supremacist leaders in history. That would not look great on his résumé.

That stupid hug had knocked him off balance and made him sit here like a damn stalker. He’d hoped to neutralize some of the antagonism his turning up out of the blue had created and keep her onside should he need her help in the future. But now the fresh scent of her shampoo invaded his nostrils, and the feel of her soft skin tantalized his senses. The sight of her in that damp robe— knowing that she was naked underneath— had distracted the hell out of him. And damned if that embrace hadn’t felt like coming home.

Chances were she wasn’t involved in the current murders. It didn’t seem likely that an accountant, raised by a woman of color, would turn around and start killing people based on her daddy’s evil doctrine. But who knew? He’d seen crazier things in his career. Tomorrow he’d check out her alibi and cross her off his to-do list.

More’s the pity.

And so what if his mind turned dirty. It wasn’t going to lead anywhere. She was off limits. And he was in control of his wants and needs.

EVERYTHING UNDER THE SUN: A Novel
Jessica Redmerski

Fiction & Literature | Post-Apocalyptic | Suspense | Romance
683 pages

Thais Fenwick was eleven-years-old when civilization fell, devastated by a virus that killed off the majority of the world’s population. For seven years, Thais and her family lived in a community of survivors deep in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains. But when her town is attacked by raiders, she and her blind sister are taken away to the East-Central Territory where she is destined to live the cruel and unjust kind of life her late mother warned her about.

Atticus Hunt is a troubled soldier in Lexington City who has spent the past seven years trying to conform to the vicious nature of men in a post-apocalyptic society. He knows that in order to survive, he must abandon his morals and his conscience and become like those he is surrounded by. But when he meets Thais, morals and conscience win out over conformity, and he risks his rank and his life to help her. They escape the city and set out together on a long and perilous journey to find safety in Shreveport, Louisiana.
Struggling to survive in a world without electricity, food, shelter, and clean water, Atticus and Thais shed their fear of growing too close, and they fall hopelessly in love. But can love survive in such dark times, or is it fated to die with them?

EVERYTHING UNDER THE SUN – JESSICA REDMERSKI – COPYRIGHT 2017

“IT WASN’T SUPPOSED TO BE THIS WAY.”

It wasn’t supposed to be this way. I was supposed to travel with him until he got me out of Lexington City and then I was to make a run for it, kill him if I had to—but I didn’t. I was supposed to stay with these people and leave Atticus to do what he wanted, go where he wanted, without me—but I couldn’t. I was supposed to be afraid of him not only because of the terrible man he was when I first laid eyes on him, but also because he was a man—but I wasn’t. I wasn’t afraid of him.
I was afraid for him.
I was afraid of being without him…
“Thais?”
I looked up; my bottom lip quivered.
“I will wait for you,” I said, trying to be strong. I wiped my tears, swallowed hard and nodded.
Atticus dashed outside, pushing the barn door out of his way. Seconds later he came back with the horse. He tossed the quilt we’d slept on the night in the barn, over the horse’s back. Then he went over to the backpacks, stepping around Rachel’s unconscious body, and shoved everything back inside. He helped my arms into the straps of the larger backpack.
Fitting his hands on my hips, Atticus hoisted me up and set me on the horse; I grabbed a hold of the horse’s reins.
“Stay out of sight of the house,” he said as he fitted the smaller backpack and his jacket between my legs. “And cut through the woods there”—he pointed toward the back of the barn—“that’s west; just keep as straight as you can in that direction, but don’t leave the woods.”
I nodded.
He walked with me outside the barn, stopped to look out at the flat land beyond the highway where those who were coming for us would likely be, and then led me around the barn. The deep woods beckoned me out ahead; I couldn’t help but feel intimidated by them, as if they were some kind of final leg of our journey—or the beginning of my journey alone.
Steadying my breath, I looked down at Atticus once more, transfixed on his intense blue eyes, the sculpted shape and rough texture of his handsome face, and I couldn’t imagine at this point never seeing it again.
“I’ll come for you,” he promised.
Tearing my gaze from his, I faced forward and tightened my grip of the reins.

Q&A with Jessica

Tell us a little about why you write in so many different genres. Does it work for you?

I can’t stick to one genre. I love writing all types of stories. Does it work for me? Yes and no. Yes, because I’d start to feel claustrophobic if I had to write in the same genre all the time. No, because I think it confuses my readers that I write everything under the same author name. I regret that decision to this day. My advice to authors considering it: Don’t make this mistake!

How do you plot your novels? Do you outline?

I never outline because I like to let the story and the characters take me where they want to go. Some authors can outline very well and it works for them, but I can’t do it. It has always felt more natural to me to just go along for the ride and see where it takes me, kind of like in real life, I guess. Some scenes in my books were figured out ahead of time, but not ‘planned out’ ahead of time, and there’s a big difference. The only exception to this method is that I do always know my ending before I begin. (Except with my book DIRTY EDEN)

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

I’m impatient. Very impatient. It’s challenging for me to get through the first 2‐3 chapters of every book because I have a bad habit of looking at how much I have left to go. I just want to be done with it already so that my readers can enjoy!

What is your favorite part of the writing process?

The last sentence. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love getting into the story, living out my character’s lives, but there’s nothing like a finished manuscript. It’s a huge accomplishment and I doubt I’ll ever tire of it.

What would you like for readers to take away from your
novels?

I just want readers to be able to connect on some level with the characters I create, and take with them an experience rather than just a story.

When did you first realize that you wanted to become a writer?

I started my first novel at the age of thirteen and I’ve been writing ever since. Writing has been the one consistent thing throughout my life and I can’t imagine life without it.

What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?

I never stop writing for the day at the end of a scene or sentence, but instead right in the middle of them. This helps me prevent writer’s block and keeps my mind fresh.

Do you have a routine that you use to get into the writing frame-of-mind?

Coffee.

Do you think children are more encouraged these days to read and/or write?

I think more than ever children are encouraged to read and write and I LOVE it. I know Harry Potter had A LOT to do with this and that’s just another reason why I have so much love and respect for J.K. Rowling.

When it comes to writing, what are your strong points? What are your weaknesses?

I love to write dialogue. It feels and flows more natural to me. I feel like I struggle a little more with description, because I’m impatient and sometimes it feels like the description is slowing me down. But I pace myself! If I didn’t, the entire novel would be one giant conversation.

My Review:

The Good Daughter, the newest work from author Karin Slaughter, had me glued to each page from the very first chapter.  Well-written and full of twists, turns, and emotion, I was kept transfixed to each page as I read.,,,and now I’m in total book hangover mode.

Two young sisters’ lives, Charlotte and Samantha, were ripped apart by an unimaginable violent moment.  Everything they knew changed.  Their family and relationship was forever altered and it would take another unimaginably violent event in the small town they grew up in to bring those broken pieces together.

Charlotte stayed in that small town while Samantha left and, even with years and miles between them, deep down I think they both knew one day they would be able to have a relationship again.

This story was told in a way that we got to see what happened to both sisters, both separately and together, that horrible night in their childhood and then brought to the current moment in time and see their lives today.  As the case currently rocking their small town runs its course, their father will need both of them to work together to find the truth.  The road to that truths has so many brilliant twists and turns.  Written with hints and breadcrumbs along the way, leading us on a long and twisted path.

Added into the sisters’ search for the truth were messy emotions and complicated personal issues.  A crumbling marriage, a loss of a spouse, infidelity, infertility, and many other relatable human moments.

Oh, and the characters themselves were superb.  Brilliant, flawed, multi-faceted, quirky, real. I loved every one of them.

Man, this story was just phenomenal.  Now, I will give you a  bit of a warning that some of the descriptions are a bit graphic, but I wasn’t bothered by it as I felt it really drove home the horror of the moments these woman had lived through.

My final thought?  This is one helluva great book! Thank you, Ms. Slaughter.

Cover Reveal….Three Heart Echo by Keary Taylor

Three Heart Echo
Keary Taylor
Publication date: September 12th 2017
Genres: Adult, Paranormal, Suspense

The demented thing is that this evolved from the most sickly sweet, heart-wrenching love story you’ve ever heard. I went to Sully because I just couldn’t get over Jack’s murder. I couldn’t deal.

Iona came to me for the same reason most did: because there was no closure. A love cut too short. She begged me to open the gate between the living and the dead.

We should have left it shut.

This. This is not a love story. This is a possession story. A story of lies. A story of two faces. This is a story of death and violent echoes from the other side.

And there will be no happy endings.

Dylan Walker has spent six years trying to move on from the loss of his girlfriend, Presley Cooper. Motivated by grief and the desire to do for others what he couldn’t do for her, he burns the candle at both ends to make it through medical school. After graduation he moves west, putting as much distance as possible between his past and his present.

Or so he thought.

Unknowingly, Dylan has been set on a path that will destroy everything he thought he knew. All the pain, all the grief, was all for nothing. With the help of an unexpected ally, Dylan must find the answers and save the girl he loves before it’s too late.

Deceit.

Betrayal.

Revenge.

A second chance at love.

But first, he must find a way to make her remember her past. Remember him. Remember everything.

What do you want from me?” Dylan twisted his hands in his hair and paced in front of her. “I don’t know what you want me to say. Every fucking day for over a month I’ve asked you if you were okay. I’ve begged you to talk to me, but all you’ve done is pop another pill and tell me you’re fine. You won’t talk to me. You won’t let me in.”

“Because you don’t want to be in here!” she screamed, pointing to her head. “It took you a week to get over what happened. It’s like it never happened as far as you’re concerned. Like you never really cared!”

Dylan stared at her, his face colored with disbelief. “Are you fucking kidding me?” he choked, his eyes glistening. “I begged you not to do it, and when you did, even though it killed me, I told you it was okay, that we would be okay because I fucking love you. And still, you pushed me away. Every fucking day, you’ve pushed me away when all I’ve wanted is to be with you.”

“Because I hate myself,” she cried, tears running down her cheeks.

“That’s your fucking problem! You don’t get to be angry at me for doing something I never wanted in the first place, Presley!”

Presley’s face fell, and all the anger drained from her body. “You’re right,” she whispered, taking a step back. “It is my problem.”

Dylan’s face twisted with pain and regret. “I didn’t mean that. I’m sorry.”

Presley shook her head and looked toward the curb. She lifted her hand and signaled for one the waiting cars to pull forward. “I’m going to go.”

“No, baby, please don’t,” Dylan begged, moving forward to catch her. “The last time you ran away from me in a cab was the worst moment in both our lives. Please don’t leave me like that again.”

Tears pooled in Presley’s eyes as her stomach bottomed out. “This isn’t like that. I just want to go home. I need to be alone. I’m messed up, Dylan, and I’m the only one who can fix me.”

“Please don’t go,” he whispered, his face solemn.

“I’ll call you tomorrow. I promise. I just need to think. Please.”

Dylan stared at her for a long moment before his shoulders dropped in defeat. He stepped forward and wrapped her in his arms. “I love you, Elvis.”

“I love you too.” Presley lifted her chin and pressed her lips against his. “I’ll call you tomorrow.” With a final goodbye, she stepped into the waiting car and gave the driver her address. The entire ride, all she could hear were Dylan’s angry words telling her it was all her fault.

WOW!! Where and how do I begin this review?!? Flutter was so much more than I expected. And it’s Olivia at her best!!!

Flutter is romantic suspense that Olivia wove together with her intricate web of twists, turns and surprises that will leave you wanting more. From the very start, you are pulled into the story and immediately need to know what happened and where the story goes.

Flutter is told in 3rd person narrative but goes back and forth between the present and the past. I am not usually a huge fan of 3rd person POV but Olivia made this work really well; it almost felt like I was watching a movie play out before me. It was gripping and powerful and flowed at the perfect pace.

“When we meet real tragedy in life, we can react in two ways – either by losing hope and falling into self-destructive habits, or by using the challenge to find our inner strength.” ~ Dalai Lama

Dylan and Presley are two characters that will stay with you forever. The blurb says it all – this is a book of deceit, betrayal and revenge at it’s finest. It’s heartbreaking in so many ways watching Dylan realize the past is not only a lie but that in order to fix the past, he must do the unthinkable – relive it all over again. Presley will pull at your heart strings – my heart hurt for her in ways I never thought possible. And Dylan’s ally, it’s impossible to not love this character deeply.

Olivia has definitely upped her game with Flutter. The delivery and her writing technique make this book one my top faves this year. It’s a romantic suspense with a touch of psychological thriller added in and will keep you engrossed in the story til the very end. Flutter is a book I will be recommending to everyone!

“I’m wrecked, ruined, destroyed, and in awe.” – #1 New York Times bestselling author, Rachel Van Dyken

The next captivating installment in New York Times bestselling author Molly McAdams’s Redemption series.

As the Princess of the Irish-American Mob, there’s no shortage of men ready to help guard and protect me. To slowly suffocate me to the point of seeking freedom—a place where I can breathe.

Kieran Hayes has been saving me for as long as I can remember. It’s in his blood, and one of the many reasons I fell in love with him. Until my favorite trait became his biggest flaw, making me resent the man I love. An unwavering warrior, his love for me has been shrouded by those instincts.

Save Lily. Protect Lily. Hide Lily. Cage Lily.

What I wasn’t prepared for was Dare—the man who would set my world on fire with just one touch. He saw straight through to my soul, as though he knew I was desperate for freedom, and silently demanded my heart from the beginning.

And I didn’t expect Dare to be Demitri Borello—the reason for so many deaths in my family. A man who will take my life the moment he finds out who I am.

Despite it all, I’ll love him until that moment comes.

A fire will die if there is no oxygen for it to consume. Ours is rapidly stealing every last breath we can sacrifice to it.

“Nothing’s getting past me,” I assured her.

Her breath washed over my lips as I leaned in to kiss her again when she whispered, “I thought we were talking about you.”

I paused for a few seconds, then looked up into her hazel eyes. “What?”

“I think I’m in danger from you.”

My brow pulled tight, and I forced out a low, frustrated laugh. “Me.”

She nodded again, the movement of her head so slow as her eyes explored mine. “I need you to let me go for so many reasons, but I easily forget why when you don’t. I think there was a reason neither of us crossed that invisible barrier before today. Because being in your arms?” She hesitated, her tongue quickly darting out to wet her lips. “Trust me, it’s dangerous.”

A weight pressed down on my chest, making it hard to breathe. Because damn it if she wasn’t right.

There were dozens of girls over the years who’d meant nothing more than a night. Maybe two. Not one could I remember the name of, most I couldn’t remember their face.

Then there’d been one who I would’ve sold my soul for if I could’ve had one more night with her.

My days with her had been everything. A slow burn that had built over time until I hadn’t been able to get enough of her. Until she’d meant too much.

And there hadn’t been a girl since.

Not a second glance. Not a thought. Nothing.

Until one morning at Brooks a few years ago.

But there was nothing slow about the thoughts and needs for the girl pressed against me. There hadn’t been since the very first morning I’d found her staring at a mirror like it had the power to destroy her world. Like that possibility fascinated her.

Fuck, if I didn’t need to find out why.

Dangerous was exactly what we were. Only she had no idea just how much.

My gut twisted as unwanted thoughts entered my mind, but I pushed them away. Because I knew what I needed to do. I needed to let her go and force myself not to follow.

But when there’s a flicker of light in your life after so much darkness, it’s impossible to stay away.

And this girl burned so damn bright.

Calling to me and beckoning me toward her, and I knew no matter how many times I let her slip away, I would follow her just to catch her again.

I brushed my thumb across her full lips. “Goddamn firefly.”

How can one author’s words make you feel so deeply??? I don’t think there is another author out there like Molly McAdams that is able to reach into the depths of my heart and make me feel the things I feel with every single one of her books.

Last year was the first time since 2012 that I read another of her books because she crushed with me Taking Chances and From Ashes. Don’t get me wrong, those two books are 5+++ star books for me, but my heart ached the emotions those books put me through. Too The Stars didn’t gut me as much as those two books, but I still felt her words deep inside.

“Love isn’t something people like us have the luxury of. It’s used against us. It’s used to slowly destroy you over the years. I was ignorant enough to think I could have it, and it ruined me. I won’t make that mistake again.”

And now here I am, almost 18 months later reading Firefly. I wanted to read Firefly because the series it’s in is a different genre that Molly has not written in before – romantic suspense and dark romance. While this book isn’t dark like I am used to, Molly definitely delivered on the suspense and angst in this book and still had my heart being battered with emotions.

“We are like fire, but fire never lasts. And when it’s over, devastation is left in its wake.”

I had an inkling of what I was getting into after reading the blurb, but nothing prepared me for the onslaught of emotions that I would feel reading this book. And you would think I would prepare myself better knowing that it’s Molly McAdams, but I don’t think I will ever be prepared for her words and how much they would seep deep into me.

Lily, Princess of the Irish-American mob, is a prisoner in her own world. She’s torn between loving and hating the one man she always thought she would marry; the one who promised they would run away from this life and start anew. But one deadly night changes everything and Lily’s future is forever caged and changed. Til she meets Dare.

“You’re a dream inside a living nightmare, and I’m a bastard for pulling you in.”

Dare is Demitiri Borello, the Boss of the sworn enemy of her family. With Dare, Lily finally finds the freedom she’s been seeking for years. Unfortunately, neither know who the other really is. And with all the drama going on between their families, their own deceit between them, their delicate and fragile love won’t survive through it all.

From page one, I was immediately hooked on this story. Molly’s brilliant writing, her enthralling characters and their strong attributes, bring you a story that will leave you breathless and encompassing your every thought. You won’t be able to put the book down once you start reading. Dare and Lily had me at the edge of my seat the entire time and had my heart in their hands. And don’t even get me started on Kieran/Nightshade – oh my poor heart. And the secondary characters have me pleading with Molly that they get their own stories down the line because they are so much an integral part of this story.

“I would let me heart be destroyed a thousand times if it meant a thousand more days with him.”

Throughout this whole book I felt myself gasping and living in these characters shoes. I have no idea how Molly does it, but she makes me feel every single emotion – hope, hurt, anger, dread, fear, love – you name it, I felt it in this book. Molly writes like no other and proves once again she is able to step outside her comfort zone and write a unique story that keeps you coming back for more.

A powerhouse romantic suspense that will have you questioning your morals and second guessing your view on love.

Molly grew up in California but now lives in the oh-so-amazing state of Texas with her husband, daughter, and fur babies. When she’s not diving into the world of her characters, some of her hobbies include hiking, snowboarding, traveling, and long walks on the beach … which roughly translates to being a homebody with her hubby and dishing out movie quotes. She has a weakness for crude-humored movies and fried pickles, and loves curling up in a fluffy comforter during a thunderstorm … or under one in a bathtub if there are tornados. That way she can pretend they aren’t really happening.

Dylan stood in front of his bathroom sink, a towel wrapped around his waist as he wiped the fog from the mirror. He studied his face, the lines that creased the skin around his blue-gray eyes and the shadows underneath that never seemed to fade. His eyes dropped lower, and his hand lifted of its own accord to trace the wing of the butterfly tattooed over his heart. The red ink curved and twisted to form a beautiful wing on one side, while the other was nothing but sharp, broken lines, the decayed black wing dripping with ink. It was the perfect tribute to Presley. She used to say he made her flutter. He regretted never telling her she did the same to him. When she left, she took that feeling with her.

For two FBI agents with a past, love becomes a matter of life and death in the new Hidden Sins novel from New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Katee Robert.

Maggie Gaines used to be an FBI agent—top of her class and one of the bright, up-and-coming stars—until she spectacularly fell apart during her first high-profile case. That was eight years ago. Now she’s a ranger at Glacier National Park, and she’s found some measure of peace. But when the body of a murdered woman is discovered, she must finally put the past behind her and work with the one man she thought she’d never see again.

For months, Vic Sutherland has been hunting a killer who’s been targeting unsuspecting hikers in national parks—and now the predator has come to Glacier. Vic knows the case will bring him face-to-face with his former partner, yet nothing can prepare him for seeing Maggie again after all these years, or for the memories of passion it stirs in both of them.

As the investigation brings them closer together—and closer to the killer—Maggie and Vic fear they have only each other to trust. But even that might not be enough to make it out of Glacier alive.

Vic thought he was prepared. He wasn’t the type of man to spend too much effort worrying about what could possibly happen—it made more sense to deal with what did happen. He knew seeing Maggie again after all this time would be a shock, but they’d been partners for twelve months at best. There was no reason to think he couldn’t roll with this development the same way he rolled with every other.

Then he arrived at Goat Haunt ranger station. He followed Wyatt out of the chopper, using a hand to shield his face from the wind the blades created. The ranger station was set against Upper Waterton Lake, and with the mountains in the background, it could have been a scene out of a painting.

All of that paled in comparison to Maggie.

She looked good. Better than good. During her time as his partner, she’d been too thin, running on too little sleep and too much coffee, and her health had suffered as a result. Obviously being a park ranger agreed with her. The unfortunate uniform did nothing to hide how her curves had filled out, her body honed from the many hours of hauling around a pack similar to the one he now carried. Her hair was longer, too, the dark locks pulled back into a braid that hit just past her shoulders.

But she was still Maggie.

Even in the bright sunlight, he could see the way her dark eyes flashed as her shock wore off. And her nose, the only feature of hers that could never be termed pretty, was the same—long and slightly crooked from where it’d been broken in the FBI academy.

Maggie shook off her paralysis faster than he did. She frowned. “What are you doing here, Vic?”

“Agent Sutherland’s here for the murder.” Wyatt stepped forward, breaking what remained of the spell cast between them.

Rationally, Vic knew it had lasted seconds at most, but it felt like a small eternity. He struggled to put the past in the appropriate box to deal with when they weren’t on a case. When we aren’t on a case, I’ll leave . . . He shut the thought down. He had a duty to the victims, and letting himself get distracted by Maggie wasn’t going to find the unsub.

Even if Maggie was a bright, shining star in the midst of darkness.

He moved closer and slid off his pack. “Where’s the best place to talk?”

For a second, it looked like Maggie would pepper him with more questions, but she finally nodded. “This way.”

Praise for The Hidden Sins Series

“…a captivating read, made all the more rewarding when good triumphs.”—Washington Post

“Robert shows off her impressive versatility in this fast-paced and inventive new Hidden Sins series. The small-town setting is a masterful blend of quaint and oppressive, which ratchets the menace and thrill factor. The protagonists carry the full weight of their pasts with them, making their growing relationship as compelling as the mystery element in The Devil’s Daughter. With plenty of twists and betrayals, this is a book that is sure to earn Robert a wealth of new fans.” RT Book Reviews

 About CASUAL IMPRESSIONS

In this electrifying novel from USA Today Bestselling Author Kennedy Layne, the Safeguard team is coming ever closer to catching an elusive serial killer who might very well be hunting one of their own…

Sawyer Madison has spent the last few months hunting down a sadistic killer.  He and his team don’t seem to be any closer to solving this particular case that has hit a little too close to home. Fortunately, they had all served in the Corps. That kind of training and dedication meant none of them considered quitting before the mission was done.

Camryn Novak had spent most of her childhood, and a large part of her adult life, dealing with her overprotective brother. So when an admirer becomes a little too obsessed with her due to her high-profile career, she decides it would be simpler to reach out to someone a little less emotionally invested.

Sawyer never expected to bump into the sister of one of his teammates while traveling on assignment.  Women like her were off limits—one shouldn’t mix business with pleasure.  One burning touch was all it took to make his good intentions go up in flames.  Unfortunately, it won’t just be her brother’s wrath he’s forced to face when an unknown perp targets Camryn—it might very well be the same psychopath they’ve been hunting all along.

The elevator chimed before either one of them could say anything else. Sawyer stepped aside after making sure the hall was empty and rested a hand on the left side of the elevator door, preventing it from closing before she crossed the threshold onto the blue and burgundy carpet. She wasn’t sure of the reason, but butterflies had set up camp in her stomach. She hadn’t experienced fluttering of this sort since her first audition for her breakout film.

“I’d like to take a look around your room, if you don’t mind,” Sawyer said as he watched her slide the card key into the slot. A green button lit up and announced her success in unlatching the lock.

“Of course. Please, come in.” Camryn quickly tried to recall how she’d left the room, but Sawyer had already slipped past her after closing the door behind them and stepped into the powder room on the right. He left the faint, heady fragrance of his cologne in his wake. It didn’t take him long to search the hotel suite, including checking the closets and adjoining doors to make sure they were properly secured. He left her once again wondering what she would say that could thank him for what he’d done last night and today at the police station. “I truly appreciate what—”

“Camryn, you don’t need to thank me.” Sawyer slowly reached up with both hands and gently removed his sunglasses until there was no barrier between them but space. His blue eyes searched hers for something she couldn’t put her finger on, but the quietness of his tone held an intimacy she’d been craving since they’d met at the airport. “You’re Brody’s sister. We look out for our own in our close-knit family.”

Heat had been making its way through her body when his words crashed over her like ice water. Why did everything have to come back around to her brother? Yes, that was their initial connection, but she didn’t want it to be the only thing that bonded them together. She instinctively reacted without thought, lifting herself up on her tiptoes and using his chest as leverage to keep her balance.

“I’m not just Brody’s sister, Sawyer. I’m also not yours,” Camryn whispered, right before she pressed her lips to his to prove her point.

Time stood still.

Camryn was pretty sure she actually heard the crackling of electricity in the air as she waited for him to decide how much further to take this moment. The answer came when his warm hands wrapped around her waist and pulled her closer. Her heart stuttered until he finally deepened their kiss.

His tongue stroked hers. Arousal slowly worked its way through her body, warming every inch of her that had been cold since last night. He tasted of coffee, mint, and something else that had her craving for more of the same.

Camryn arched farther into him when he used his right arm to wrap around her waist, bringing her even closer. She couldn’t help but let out a small whimper of pleasure when his left hand cupped the side of her face, tilting her head back so that he could nip her bottom lip before deepening their kiss once again.

The slight bite sent shivers up and down her spine. Before she could move her hands from his chest and around his neck, Sawyer abruptly pulled away… leaving Camryn craving more.
