Excerpt
My back was against the ground and he crouched on his knees beside me. “We’re going to have to reenact this, and like I said, if you have a problem with any part of it, stop me immediately.”“Okay,” I whimpered looking up at him, his face hovering above mine. His hand reached over to my legs, motioning me to open them. He took his position between me, his arms propping him up as his face remained free of emotion.

My heart rate climbed significantly as I felt his crotch lean right up against mine. Holy shit, the fabric between us was way too thin, and I could feel every single inch of him. I bit my bottom lip as his eyes met mine. “You haven’t even taken me out to dinner yet and I’m already under you.”

I laughed at my own joke, not because I thought I was hilarious, but because he was making me edgy. He was unyielding in his visage, so serious and intimidating. “Wrap your legs around me tightly.” He grabbed at my thighs and hoisted my legs up higher. “Lock your ankles at my back.”

I easily obeyed, and my body shuddered against him as he clenched my arm and wrapped it around his neck. “Closeness at this point will be your friend. One arm will be around my neck and the other at my arm.” He buried his face at my shoulder and instead of scaring me the way it should have, I found it hot, sexy, and a turn on. I could feel him all over me the way I had pictured, and felt like this whole situation was a bit messed up. I was supposed to be fighting an attacker, not thinking about the ways I wanted him to ravish me.

“Now, I want your hand that’s holding my arm to reach toward the hem of my shirt and lift it up toward my neck. Understand?”

Oh, I understood. He was asking me to undress him, and this was supposed to be self-defense? “Um, how is this going to protect me?”

“Trust me.” He glanced up at me, our bodies tangled like a pretzel. He guided me toward each step, showing me how to choke him, put my foot on his hip, keep my face close to his neck so he couldn’t use his hands to punch me, and then eventually pull myself away. We tried the move several times. At first slow, as he walked me through each step, reminding me of how easy it could be for him to pull away and win. My moves were shaky, but with each go I found myself getting more confident.

After at least half an hour practicing the routine over and over, I finally got it down. We tried one last go and instead of pushing away I stayed in place, feeling his humid breath on my neck as I held him down. He pulled away to look at me, his pupils dilating as his body wriggled on top of me. “You aren’t towing through this one, Red. What’s wrong?”

We both paused, our breathing labored. I licked my lips, loosened my grip on his shirt as my eyes hooded with lust. I could feel his body twitch against me and I whimpered as my hips instinctively lifted, rubbing against him with the sweetest ache. His skin was hot to the touch, and I was drowning in a sea of dark blue.

The sweetest groan from him made me senseless as it rang in my ears. His fingertips trailed my lips as he rested on top of me, the both of us locked in each other’s embrace. Foreheads touching, we were so close, extremely close, to achieving a goal I never knew I had wanted so badly. Our lips hadn’t even glazed over each other when he inhaled and lifted himself off of my body with a jolt.

He cleared his throat as he shifted his shirt down, trying to smooth it over his chest. “That’s enough for today. We can continue this another time.”

Challenge by Amy Daws….Release Day Blitz

Title: Challenge

He’s her patient. She’s his doctor. They shouldn’t. But God, do they want to.

Camden Harris, the famously hot, hulk of a footballer is laid up in a London hospital. But his busted knee doesn’t stop him from running his well-practiced game on Indie Porter—his redheaded spitfire of a doctor. She’s not his type, not even close. But she could be the perfect distraction from the soul-crushing damage this injury could cost him.

Indie’s tired of her naivety putting a target on her back. As a gifted child, she’s let her education take the front seat her whole life. But a fling with a footballer like Camden might be just what she needs to grab life by the balls.

And he could be the perfect guy for the plan she’s been sitting on for over two years.

But when feelings make a final play, there’s no amount of medicine that can heal the damage to their hearts.

We arrive at my building and take the lift up to my fourth floor flat. As I’m unlocking the front door, she asks, “Are you a good dancer, Camden?”
This question is odd, even for her. “Why do you ask?”
She sighs and leans against the wall just as I open the door. “I envisioned you were tonight when I was dancing with some bloke.”
My jaw clenches. “I don’t need to hear about you dancing with other guys.”
She smirks. “But I was thinking about you so it shouldn’t count.”
“It counts.”
“I think I like this jealous side of you. I might have to use it to my—”
Her snarky comment is cut off by a satisfying yelp as I wrap my arms around her waist and throw her over my shoulder.
“What are you doing?” she squeals as I savour the feel of her bare legs in my hands.
I turn and walk her inside, kicking the door closed with my foot. “Do you think you’re smart, talking to me like that?” I ask, completely unable to hide the smile on my face.
Her hair tickles my back as she giggles. “I am quite smart, actually. I skipped three whole grades in primary school. Did you know that?”
“I didn’t know that. Tell me then, what did they do to punish clever girls with smart mouths in boarding school?”
“Oh, naughty, naughty things.” She giggles again and I have a momentary desire to put her down just so I can see her face when she does it.
“I might need a demonstration.” I walk down the hallway and straight to my room, forgoing the polite flat tour, the offering of drinks, and the inane small talk. Our arrangement is for sex and sex alone.
“I might be inclined to oblige.” Her voice is breathy when we reach the quiet darkness of my room.

Q&A with Rachel Lee – Conard County Marine

1 ) Where did you gather inspiration for Conard City?

Conard County had been rolling around in the back of my mind for some time until it emerged as the setting for Exile’s End. Before I knew it, I was setting a second book there (Cherokee Thunder). Interestingly, my editor called as soon as she’d finished reading the first book and asked if there would be a second. I told her I was already working on it, and that I thought of these as my Conard County books. And there it was.

Nothing in particular inspired it. The town itself, Conard City, is based on a conglomeration of small towns where I’ve lived.

2) How do you think the setting affects the story?

The setting has a huge effect on the story. Given that it is limited to one county with a low population, I can’t do just any kind of story believably. It constrains me in some ways, but those constraints can be useful creatively. It also allows me to have continuing characters which both my readers and I enjoy.

3) Is anything in your new release based on real life experiences or purely all imagination?

That’s a very hard question to answer. Some emotional realities are clearly part of my life experience. Actual events, such as amnesia, are not. It is part of my job as a writer to vividly imagine myself in someone else’s experience. I need to be there, to imagine it until I feel it… and I’m sometimes quite surprised by what I discover or learn. The thing is, no matter how vivid and true my imagination is (and many have written to tell me that they’re astonished that I understand so well) I never forget that however well-realized a character is, it will not be everyone’s experience. We are all very different but in many ways all the same. It’s an interesting conundrum that never fails to intrigue me.

4) How long on average does it take you to write a book?

That depends on the book and other demands on my time. Some books are more difficult. Sometimes life needs attending as it does for everyone. I write seven days a week when I can, but I can’t always. So I will not say how long it takes. It takes however long it needs.

5) What is the biggest misconception about your genre?

That it’s pure fluff. That it’s mind candy. Or that it’s just an excuse for titillation. Many of us romance authors deal with very real human problems and situations. In fact, as I’ve said before, I think of my books as a novel with a romance.

To those who scorn the genre, I suggest you look at music. How many songs are there about love?

6) Did you hide any secrets in your books?

Not that I’m aware of, unless my subconscious played a game on me.

7) Any tips to get through the dreaded writer’s block?

Write. Just write anything. Two words often lead to ten, and ten into a paragraph. It doesn’t have to be work on your book or story. But write. Soon the words will find you again.

8) How do you relax?

I am a great Cricket fan. I especially love One Day Internationals and Twenty-20s. But one of the things I enjoy is the huge international participation. I have favorite teams all over the world, and favorite players, too. Cricket has also brought me friends from around the world. Merely mention a team or a player’s name and you can converse with people from almost anywhere.

9) What is your favorite book and why?

J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings trilogy. Tolkien had the greatest story-telling voice I’ve ever read. His words carry you along. Dive in anywhere to read a passage and you may emerge hours later. He’s hypnotic, his prose lyrical, and those books will simply sweep you away.

10) What is your current end-of-summer read?

A stack of books is waiting for me.   I venture across many genres, and I read a lot of non-fiction for ideas and information. My favorite romance authors are there, of course (I won’t name them for fear of overlooking someone I adore) and I finished the most recent Jack Reacher novel a few weeks ago. At the moment I’m studying Practical Homicide Investigation.

About the author:

When Rachel Lee was 9 years old, her mother would tell her to go out and play, but, instead, she hid in the basement reading and writing stories. Now, four decades later, Rachel would like to go out and play in the Florida sunshine, but her editors force her to hide in her office and write.

That may be the only straight line in Rachel Lee’s life. From anthropology to computer science, from UFOs to Atlantis theories, from egrets and herons on graceful wing to Siberian Huskies pouncing around the living room, there’s little that has not or might not attract her inquisitive attention.

Despite varied interests, Rachel is, above all, a student and observer of people. How they stand, whether in couples or casual groups. Facial expressions. Strides. Gestures. And, when talking with people, the question she most commonly asks is, “Why?”

Rachel’s wide range of interests, particularly that in people, infuse her books with variety, detail, and a depth of human emotion that draws readers into her imagination and brings her characters to life.

BROKEN GOD Blurb:

Power is a strange and broken thing.

He was the sun god, the god of healing and song.

And prophecy.

Apollo has lived alone for centuries, content to spin out the years wandering a new and strange world, lost in the past and endless versions of the future. He has cut all ties with the remains of Olympus and his power, and hidden himself in humanity.

His twin thinks he’s depressed, spending his time in coffee shops, hospital waiting rooms, and concert halls…and nothing matters. Not really.

Until her.

Iris. With her teasing mouth and soulful music and eyes that remind him of the past.

He can’t resist her smile.

A girl as wild as he was, once, with a poet’s tongue and the body of a siren, who for one night makes him forget all the years and everything he gave up.

And he can’t stop fate.

Gods knows he’s tried.

He can’t help taking her.

Even if he knows better.

When Iris wakes up screaming, caught up in visions of the future, Apollo realizes that he didn’t leave his power quite as far behind as he thought.

He’s the god of prophecy and he’s been running from it, for centuries.

Iris is everything he has to avoid.

Now he has a furious Oracle on his hands, his sister trying to fix him, and someone is killing the gods.

It’s not just his tenuous sanity that hangs in the balance this time.

It’s all of Olympus.

Godhood really wasn’t supposed to be this hard.

Excerpt:
There are a few things that will never change, despite everything else that has.
When I call, my sister will come.
Always.
It is the unshakable truth that my entire world is built on, from my first memories to this day. So when I piece it together, I don’t think.
I slide my phone out, even in the hospital room while Iris murmurs at her brother and Heath eyes me like I might break her.
Stupid boy. I already have.
I text her and slide the phone away. I don’t need to watch to know she’ll answer, any more than I need the answer to know she’ll be at my apartment when we return.
This is Artemis, who has made a life of taking care of me and worrying about me.
I listen to Heath and Lily talk around Iris, listen to her increasingly fragmented babble, and when Heath sends Lily a confused look, I intervene. Catch her hand and let a thin trickle of power seep from me to her. “We had a very long day, and she didn’t sleep well. I think I should probably take her home and let her get some rest. Do you mind?”
Heath does. I can tell, the way he’s bristling but Iris slumps into me and yawns, impressively, backing up every lie I’m spinning.
“I’ll be back tomorrow, ok? You just. You rest. I’ll be back tomorrow.”
She’s still looking over her shoulder when I pull her from the room.
Her eyes are wide and serious when we duck into a stairwell. “What happened to him?” she asks. Staring at me like I might give her answers. Like she has the right to demand answers from me.
Smart girl.
I tuck her hair back, behind her ears and ignore the low growl of warning it earns me. “If I promise to tell you when we reach my apartment. Will you trust me a little bit longer, sweetheart?”
Her eyes narrow. “Last time we got to your apartment, you and I didn’t do much in the way of talking.”
I grin at that. Because. Fair point.

“Alice Gaines will tantalize your romance taste buds with a book you can’t put down until the very last page.” NYT bestselling author Jasmine Haynes

Her brother’s best friend is not only the hottest man Michelle Dennis has ever seen, he’s the one man she hopes to avoid after leaving town eight years ago. Of course he’s the one waiting at the airport. Worse, he made sure they’re staying in the same house.

Pro football player Alex Stafford is expecting to pick up his friend’s kid sister, not a full-fledged bombshell. He was planning to apologize for their past, but the feelings he had years ago come roaring back…and this time, there’s no denying them.

Keeping his hands off is a test he’s bound to fail—especially when they’re stuck in close quarters. But falling in love with Michelle, living in her world, isn’t an option for a guy like him. And remembering that will save them both a lot of heartache…

My Review:

There are romance tropes that I just can’t get enough of and this story had some of my favorites. Best friend’s sibling? Check. Forced together or stranded? Check. (Even if it was contrived by out hero.) Opposites attract? Check. Second chance romance? Check. I also really liked the premise – that after having her heart broken by our hero, Alex, eight years earlier before leaving home for college, Michelle decides that she can muster up the strength to return home for the first time to attend the anniversary party for Alex’s parents who she’s very close with.

Michelle figures she can handle just one week with Alex.

Except she can’t. And thank god or we wouldn’t have much of a story! Just One Week was a fun, sweet, light-hearted romance. Alex is a professional football player and Michelle is a brainy, nerdy type. I loved watching them overcome their differences in personality as well as their past to get to their happy ending.

Just One Week is an enjoyable read with a likable couple you want to root for, some great secondary characters in Alex’s family, and just enough humor and chemistry. Bonus points for thoughtfully working in a learning disability plot line.

Excerpt:

Later that night, Alex found the opening he’d been looking for ever since deciding he’d surrender to the inevitable and make love to Michelle. He’d sat in his bedroom after everyone had gone to bed, digging up enough courage to go out and knock on the cottage door. Instead, he watched as she emerged into the moonlight and walked slowly toward the pasture.

An invitation? She couldn’t be sure he hadn’t gone to sleep. On the other hand, she would know that she’d be visible from his window. She could have simply taken a chance he’d realize she was out there. She’d won.

He stuck his feet into his slippers and put on his robe. Before he left the room, he grabbed the condoms and put them in his pocket. He’d need at least one tonight. Then he left his room and went downstairs as quietly as he could manage.

No sound came to indicate he’d awakened anyone. The house was silent except for the hum of the refrigerator as he let himself out the back door. A little mental geography told him the direction to go in, and before long, he spotted Michelle where she stood with her face lifted toward the moon.

She wore something of a filmy, white material that glowed in the soft light. A breeze ruffled the material around her legs. With her graceful limbs and her hair falling down her back, she resembled a character from mythology—a creature you could only find in the moonlight and could never truly call your own. Someone who’d evaporate like mist in the heat of day and only return in your dreams.

Poetic and probably silly, but real in his heart. He stepped on something that made a snapping sound. Most likely a twig. She turned and spotted him, and a smile tugged at her lips.

“Following me?” she said.

“Did you come out here to invite me to join you?”

She shrugged. “I thought you’d gone to bed.”

Yeah, sure. Everything about her smile said she’d planned this encounter to invite him into her web. But then, he’d come of his own will, needing nothing more than an opportunity.

He’d make love to Michelle Dennis tonight. As surely as the moon spilled silver light over both of them, they’d be joined before the morning came.

“Lovely, isn’t it?” she said. “I’ve missed this.”

“You must have full moons in Massachusetts.”

“I don’t mean the moon,” she said. “I mean being with you.”

Of course, their togetherness could be nothing like their earlier, innocent friendship. She’d never come to him wearing a negligee, and he’d never had condoms in his pocket. She shivered a bit, and he got up close behind her. When he opened his robe and wrapped it around her, she fit against him like pieces in a puzzle. When he bent to place the side of his face against her, the perfume of her hair surrounded him. He almost groaned out of pure pleasure.

“What am I going to do with you, Dr. Dennis?”

She gave him a wicked laugh. “I can think of three or four things off the top of my head.”

“Evil woman.”

“You have no idea how evil.” She turned in his arms, and now her softness pressed against him everywhere. He wouldn’t be able to hold her this way for long before he became completely aroused. The stirrings had begun when he’d first spotted her out here and the reality about what he was going to do registered.

She became even bolder, lifting her face to nuzzle the tip of her nose against his jaw. She followed that with a kiss to the underside of his chin.

“You know what’s going to happen if you keep doing that, don’t you?” he said.

“I do.”

“And you’re giving me permission?”

“Complete and total.”

my-review

This story melted my heart in so many ways.  And it’s not the lead male or female that stole heart – it’s the little girl, English who runs away it.

I won’t go into too many details about this book.  You have to experience all the feels of this book firsthand.  Trust me, you will be under the rainbow after reading this book.

Beck unexpectedly finds himself being at father at the young age of 19.  Fast-forward six years later and you get to see what kind of father he is.

English is starting her first day of school and Sheridan is her teacher.  As much as English doesn’t want to go, it’s Sheridan’s great thinking that wins English over.  And that’s where everything starts.

I love the slow build of everything.  Sheridan and Beck do not hit off right away and even as things progress, you can see that Sheridan isn’t really impressed by Beck other than being a great father.  Outside of that, he’s a butthole – seriously that’s what Sheridan calls him.

Annie wrote a very endearing and true to life story.  The interactions between not just Sheridan and Beck but with Beck’s parents are so honest and heartfelt, you truly forget this story isn’t real.

But what made me love this book even more was English.  That little girl stole the limelight in this book.  She’s a true angel and such a bundle of joy and energy.  I kid you not, after reading this, I couldn’t help but hold my own little one and just squeeze her a little tighter.  Our children are our world and we will do anything for them.

Another smashing hit for Annie!

One day, on her way home from work as a sales manager, USA Today bestselling author, A. M. Hargrove, realized her life was on fast forward and if she didn’t do something soon, it would be too late to write that work of fiction she had been dreaming of her whole life. So she made a quick decision to quit her job and reinvented herself as a Naughty and Nice Romance Author.

She fancies herself all of the following: Reader, Writer, Dark Chocolate Lover, Ice Cream Worshipper, Coffee Drinker (swears the coffee, chocolate, and ice cream should be added as part of the USDA food groups), Lover of Grey Goose (and an extra dirty martini), #WalterThePuppy Lover, and if you’re ever around her for more than five minutes, you’ll find out she’s a non-stop talker.

“Bentley!” Brock barked and shook his head.

“What?” Bentley shrugged then smoothly walked over to Jane and pulled out a box of black high-heeled pumps in a size eight and a half. “Your foot, milady?”

Brock rolled his eyes. “Give it a rest, Bentley. She can put on her own damn shoes.”

Bentley completely ignored him. “I love a woman’s foot.” He grabbed Jane’s broken shoe and tossed it to the side while his hands danced along the arch of her foot. His fingertips danced along her skin. Seduction by foot rub? That was new.

“It’s sexy, the arch.” He leaned over her, his lips parting just enough to give her the impression he was thinking about kissing her. “The curve of a woman’s foot reminds me of her body…see? Sexy.” He slid the shoe on a very terrified looking Jane and stood. “Perfect fit.”

Jane’s mouth opened then closed as a rosy flush crept over her face. “Th-thank you.”

“I bought you my favorite brand.”

Her eyebrows arched. How did he know about Manolo Blahnik? “Oh.” And then she nodded and said loudly, “Ohhhh! That makes sense!”

Bentley’s eyes narrowed. “Me buying women’s shoes?”

“You wearing them,” she explained. “That’s great. I mean, good for you. I’m sorry I’m so awkward at things like this, but it’s good you’re…you know…” She bobbed her head and sputtered. “Out and…comfortable with it.”

“Out?” Bentley repeated. “I’m confused.”

“Of the closet,” she said slowly then saw the scowl on Bentley’s face. “Or maybe you just like to dress like a woman?” She straightened her shoulders and tried again. “In either case, congratulations on your choice to wear women’s clothing!”

Brock about died laughing as Bentley’s horrified expression went from stunned to genuine confusion.

“You heard her.” Brock held his laughter in check. “Congratulations, brother. I’ll take care of the press release: Bachelor Playboy Bentley Wellington and his private women’s shoe collection.”

Bentley let out a strangled laugh. “Yes, and while we’re at it why don’t we remind the press that the clock is ticking on that auction of yours? Hmm?”

“Auction?” Jane asked.

“Don’t.” Brock shook his head. “You don’t want to know.”

“But she probably already does.” Bentley pointed out. “Unless she doesn’t read the news…?”

They both stared at her, waiting for an answer.

“I, uh…” She ducked her head, blushing again. “I read books.”

“How pure.” Bentley smiled and sat down next to her. “And just so we’re clear.” He leaned in as though he was going to kiss her. “My bat only swings one way…and I can assure you, every time I get thrown a pitch, I hit it out of the park.”

Jane isn’t entirely sure that Cinderella got such a raw deal. Sure, she had a rough start, but didn’t she eventually land a prince and a happily-ever-after? Meanwhile, Jane is busy waiting on her demanding, entitled sisters, running her cleaning business, and . . . yep, not a prince in sight. Until a party and a broken shoe incident leave Jane wondering if princes—or at least, a certain deliciously hunky billionaire—maybe do exist.

Except Brock Wellington isn’t anyone’s dream guy. Hell, a prince would never agree to be auctioned off in marriage to the highest bidder. Or act like an arrogant jerk—even if it was just a façade. Now, as Brock is waiting for the auction chopping block, he figures it’s karmic retribution that he’s tempted by a sexy, sassy woman he can’t have. But while they can’t have a fairy-tale ending, maybe they can indulge in a little bit of fantasy . .

A long time ago..

I was young and naive. I thought I could save the world. I thought that protecting those around me from hurt and pain was what I was born to do. She made me feel that way. Ava Links, the little girl who was too fucking stubborn for her own good. The little girl who absorbed the hurt and pain of everyone around her and tried to bring sunshine to them all. The little girl who didn’t give a damn if people picked on her about wearing a crown and tutu every day. A little girl who somehow looked at me, expecting—no, damn near demanding—I protect her.

I saw the pain she hid, and as I grew older, I understood that pain. The pain of being so much to so many that there is really never a “you”.

I took control of my life…

I had to get away from everyone who pulled at me in order to claim myself. When I became the man I was destined to be, I began to live. Then, one drunken night, Ava Links, no longer a little girl, said the right damn thing to me, and everything changed. After seven years of fucking her while home on leave with no expectations, now my life is out of control…

One bad dream, one I love you, one night of pushing her the hell out of my life, one drummer stealing her heart, and one explosion took everything away.

Lies are told.

Lies are unraveling.

Lies are going to destroy.

These are my truths.

Excerpt

Outside, Sandman screams and chants as we hurry him down the pre-planned route. Trigger is on the phone, giving coordinates to the guys in the sky for evacuation as he and Killshot go back inside the building we were occupying to grab our equipment.

Again, Sandman puts up a fight, and I am forced to the ground with him.

A whistling buzz pierces my ears, followed by an earth shaking explosion.

The building has been hit!

The ringing in my ears is horrific. The pain I feel as brick and metal hit me is allowed for five, four, three, two, one, and now I dismiss it.

Sandman easily pushes away from the grip I have on him because, lucky for him, he was covered by my body. When I grab him, I quickly realize my shoulder is dislocated, but fuck if I let him go. Not when we spent years looking for him.

I hear Trigger yelling but, with the ringing in my ears, I have no idea what the hell he’s saying.

I look back at Sandman, who has a sick smile on his face. I push him to the ground and look back for my team.

Trigger is a mess. Blood is everywhere as he pushes parts of the building off of him. But I don’t see Killshot. I am caught in a moment of needing to help my men, yet not wanting to release my captive.

I look back at Sandman who knows the conundrum I am faced: His live capture or helping my men. What he doesn’t know is who I am.

Another whistle and another explosion rocks us.

I pull out my piece and look at the sick fuck.
