“I missed you today,” he says, his heated gaze lingering on my body.

I step back, and he follows.

He looks like he’s cornering his prey.

“Apparently not enough to make it to dinner,” I point out icily.

“I called the restaurant and told them I’d be late. Didn’t they tell you?”

I cross my arms and glance away.

“Brooke.” He steps closer and gently lifts my chin, forcing me to look back at him. “Fight with me tomorrow.”

I narrow my eyes, angry with him for shelving this discussion so casually. To him, it doesn’t matter that I sat in that restaurant alone, looking like a fool for nearly two hours. He’s brushing off my anger, stepping closer and forcing his way past my defenses.

“I think I’d like to talk about it now.”

I catch the beginning of a smirk just before he leans in to kiss my cheek.

“Are you sure there isn’t anything you’d rather be doing right now?”

He uncrosses my arms and brings them up over his shoulders then steps closer, towering over me. My arms tighten around his neck, but still, I turn away, keeping my mouth from him. His breath hits my neck and he pulls me taut against his hard body, growing more impatient with every moment I try to resist.

“Brooke,” he whispers huskily.

My eyes flutter closed as he bends and presses a kiss to my cheek, my chin, then lower, tipping my head back so he can reach the smooth recess at the nape of my neck. I shiver and he groans, obviously aware of what his touch is doing to me.

She swallowed and met his gaze. “All right. Let me get this straight. We’re going undercover to flush out a killer who’s obsessed with me, and you’re offering to play at being my man for real with no strings or future?” She hoisted the bag onto her shoulder. “That’s some ego. “Yes.” And that was definite interest in her eyes.

She clicked her tongue. “I’ll keep your offer in mind.”

“You do that.” He maintained a low and calm voice. “While you’re considering, let’s look at the situation. You have publicly made me your fiancé in order to draw out a killer, which means I have to act as such. She stilled, expressions crossing her face rapidly. “That’s a good point,” she said slowly.

Yeah. Sometimes reality helped him out a little. Plus, the killer had a hard-on for her, and he must already have plans to take her at some point. She’d just upped the timeline. “In addition, you need protection around the clock now, and I’m willing to provide that. So while you’re keeping my offer in mind, we’ll be staying in the same hotel room or same apartment.” He made sure he had her full attention. “While we plan the wedding, of course.”

Her challenging smile thrilled something inside him. “That’s fair.”

He stepped back to give her some space. “Good. Are you ready?”

“Yes.” She looked around the room. “I do have to ask. What if I didn’t agree with you about your keeping secrets from me? Considering people shoot at you, and I’m going to be at your side, it seems fair that you tell me who these people are.” She cocked her head to the side and focused back on him.

“I have more immediate concerns than being fair,” he said smoothly. “You brought me into this mess.”

A frown drew down her eyebrows. “Listen. I want an answer about you.”

“I just gave you one.” At her mulish expression, he searched for better words that wouldn’t end in an argument.

When Keri told me she was writing a story that has been in her head for quite some time and was nothing like she wrote before, I was all in. I didn’t even need a blurb or genre to want to read this book. That is just how great I knew this book would be. And I was not wrong at all.

Juniper Unraveling is Keri’s debut in the Dystopian world. It’s also a post-apocalyptic world and it’s slightly different even with her zombie-like creatures called Ragers. Keri adds a uniqueness to this story that sets it apart from other post-apocalyptic and dystopian stories we’ve read before.

The beginning of this book is told from two POV’s – two young, teenage girls who are living in this new world after a huge virus took out almost the entire world. Then midway through things start to coming together, all these bits and pieces from these two girls are starting to make sense BUT there are still so many unanswered questions that have you itching for answers. The second half has alot more action and is faster-paced because of everything finally hitting that crescendo and you can’t stop yourself from reading what happens next.

I found the buildup of everything from how the virus started, to the outbreak, to where they are now, to be quite interesting and entertaining. And even as they are living in this new world, all the testing and hush-hush experiments is just as deadly as the actual Ragers they are trying to kill – it all ties together somehow. Keri does a great job of brining everything to life on the pages – I felt like I had a movie playing out in my head as I was reading.

Keri has so much in this book – the survivors behind the wall living a “blind life” because they do not want to know what happens beyond the wall; those who are still living in their hives and not only fighting Ragers, but the Legion too; those who were living in hives but captured by the Legion – it’s those people’s lives that are most unique in this book, but every singular person plays an important role in this story.

Yea, I know I did not give you much to go on in terms of the plot and I won’t. Keri writes a very enthralling and entertaining tale. As with all of Keri’s books, there is dark undertone and there some scenes that some may find too graphic, but it’s so damn good that if the scenes weren’t written that way, it just wouldn’t work. Plus she adds in her fabulous panty-melting scenes that are a great mix with this book. Everything just flows flawlessly.

If you love dystopian or post-apocalyptic reads, you definitely need to read this book. Hell, even if you have never read either genre before, I beg you to give this book a go. I have no doubt you will find yourself loving a new genre.

Keri Lake is a dark romance writer who specializes in demon wrangling, vengeance dealing and wicked twists. Her stories are gritty, with antiheroes that walk the line of good and bad, and feisty heroines who bring them to their knees. When not penning books, she enjoys spending time with her husband, daughters, and their rebellious Labrador (who doesn’t retrieve a damn thing). She runs on strong coffee and alternative music, loves a good red wine, and has a slight addiction to dark chocolate.

As soon as Abby saw the mare, the smile that pulled at her lips displayed her joy. She oohed and ahhed over the horse.

“Her name is Diamond.”

“Diamond,” Abby repeated as she stroked the horse’s neck. “It fits you.”

The mare had fallen for Abby almost immediately, and Clayton could understand why. There was something about the woman that drew people and animals. She was quiet and unassuming. He suspected that might be because so many people overlooked her. That was their loss because there was so much about Abby that was intriguing.

“You’re staring,” she said as she cut her eyes to him.

Clayton lifted one shoulder in a shrug. “I like what I see.”

She paused in her caress of the mare. Then she took a step back, and then another and another before she turned and walked away.

He frowned as anger spiked through him. He’d moved too fast. Abby was like a spooked mare. He should’ve trodden slowly. Earned her trust first.

When Abby reached the back of the barn, she stopped and looked at him over her shoulder. It was the seductive curve of her lips that halted his thoughts. As soon as she turned the corner, he started after her.

His blood rushed through him in a frenzy before pooling in his cock. With his heart beating furiously, he found her leaning back against the barn.

Clayton stood before her. His palms ached to feel her skin, to hold her glorious curves against him. He couldn’t seem to catch his breath, and as he took a step closer to her, he realized that it had been years since he’d hungered to kiss anyone as he did Abby.

Her lips parted, drawing his attention to her mouth. The longing he’d suppressed for days consumed him. He took the final step that brought their bodies close. The soft light from over the barn couldn’t reach them in the shadows.

Clayton lowered his head, her eyes drifting shut right before their lips met. He softly plied her mouth with light kisses until her hands moved up his arms and twined around his neck. When she sighed, he slid his tongue against her lips.

As her mouth opened, and their tongues met, need coursed through him. The desire, the yearning to have her seized him, overwhelmed him as the kiss deepened. He wound one hand into her long hair while his other splayed over her back. With each lick, each sigh, each moan, the hunger grew. Without a doubt, he had to have her. Not because he was in need, but because he ached for her.

But now wasn’t the time. He wouldn’t have their first time together be against the back of the barn in the shadows so no one saw them. He wasn’t ashamed of Abby, and he wanted her to know that. He cared about her.

That in and of itself shocked him, but he accepted it. What choice did he have, really?

Clayton knew he had to end the kiss now before he was past the point of no return. Already he was circling down that drain. He forced himself to pull back. Then he saw her heavy-lidded eyes and the way her chest heaved.

He ran his thumb over her swollen lips and briefly thought of picking her up and riding somewhere where no one could find them. Luckily, there was enough sanity left in him that he was able to keep dominion over his desire.

“Why did you stop?” she asked.

He was glad she didn’t know how easily she could’ve broken through his restraint by simply pulling his head down for another kiss. That’s all it would’ve taken. He wanted her so badly he shook with it.

“I’m already walking a tightrope, Abby,” he confessed. “If I keep kissing you, I won’t stop.”

“I don’t want you to stop.”

He groaned at her husky words. If he wanted to stay in control, he had to reason with her, and he knew just the thing to say.

“You don’t want your brothers finding us, do you?”

Just as he expected, it was as if she were doused with cold water. “Or your parents.”

He forced a smile even as he missed the sexy woman who had been begging for more kisses a moment before. But he’d find her again soon enough. “Exactly.”

During my youth I was into theater, song and dance, commercials and boys. I loved romance surely, but I had never read a romance novel until my late teens. “Hey, Cora,” he said, his gravelly morning voice so damn sexy.

“Hey,” she said, tilting her head back to look him in the eye. She wondered if she should get off him, but didn’t really want to.

Not making any move to get up, Slider just looked down at her. “How you feeling?”

“A lot better,” she said, hyperaware that her hand was lying on his chest. His heartbeat faintly registered against her palm. “Still achy and a little off, but better.”

“Good. You should probably take it easy today, though. Whatever that was isn’t likely out of your system yet.”

She nodded. “I will.”

Talking like this, their faces so close, felt so damn intimate that Cora could almost imagine that nothing existed outside of Slider’s bed. She almost didn’t want it to. Especially when his arm squeezed a little tighter around her shoulders and brought them just a little closer. Cora shifted into his embrace, pressing her chest totally flush against his die, and sliding her thigh up until—

Oh, hell. Until she felt the part of him she’d accidentally seen. And it was hard.

He sucked in a breath, and his hand clamped around his thigh. “Shit, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean—”

Ok, so I have been DYING for Slider’s story since we met him in the very first book. I have looked forward to every peek we would get of him in every book in this series. There was something about his story, his history, his heartbreak, that drew me in and had me on bated breath for this book. And now, after finally getting to read this book, I can tell you is was SO worth the wait. This book was everything.

I adore Laura Kaye and her writing. She always delivers a well written story with multifaceted characters and a plot brimming with heart and soul but there was just something special about Slider and Cora. The evolution of their relationship was heartbreaking and beautiful. Touching and meaningful. Emotional and sexy. They both have to overcome painful pasts and in order to do that, they will need to earn on each other. Both were hesitant at first. Slider has built up so many walls, Cora never thought she would be able to break the down. Cora was betrayed in the worst possible way and never though she would be able to open up to a man again. They’re both 100% valid in the way they are today and when they start to open up and let one another in, it was pure magic. Their journey was a rough one with more than a few stumbles along the way but when they finally find their path is simply sublime.

I have to also give mention to Slider’s two sons. Man, if Laura was already pulling at my heartstrings with Slider and then she had to go write these two adorable boys! Being the mom of a boy (and the wife of a Benji!), I’m sure you can imagine how full these two little characters made my heart!

If you haven’t picked up this series, you must….I guarantee you will love it! Thank you, Ms. Kaye, for Slider’s story. I loved every single second!

Once again – another book that I enjoyed while reading, but it’s one that I don’t find myself remembering in a short time or wanting to go back and re-read because it was that damn good. And it’s these reviews that I hate the most writing.

I love Rebecca and her books – she writes beautiful stories. And while I am reading, I am so into the story and the characters and how everything pans out. But once it’s over, I move on and forget about it in a few weeks. :/ UGH

Rebecca gives us a story on second chances. Frankie moved out of town after her freshman year of college and hasn’t looked back since. She’s forced to return back 10 years later when her mom’s health is failing. And she hopes that while she is back in town she doesn’t run into the one person who made her flee all those years ago.

Cole made the hardest decision when he had Frankie believe a lie that forced her to leave their hometown. He has not been the same man since but has chosen to try and forget Frankie in booze and women. But he’s also tried to become a better man by rebuilding his small hometown in the process along with expanding his father’s business.

Cole knows that Frankie is returning home but doesn’t expect to be able to make any amends for their past. But they both are holding and hiding so much back from one another that tension between them is bound to snap. And snap it does.

As I said, I really enjoyed this story as I read it. The story line is sort of played out but Rebecca brings it some fresh air but adding in her own style and letting things play out naturally. Cole and Frankie were inseparable growing up and you can tell that time hasn’t changed that connection. I truly loved that it wasn’t these two apart for like 90% of the book and then poof, HEA. No, Rebecca has them easing into the start of something new about 60% and building that strong foundation they once had. Yes, there are still some road blocks thrown up I loved that we got to see them slowly achieve that HEA, like life normally is.

As I said before, I liked the book. There wasn’t anything that wow’d me but it wasn’t a bad book either. It was just a really nice and enjoyable read. There were some small angsty parts but nothing overly dramatic and it all worked out in the end.
