Author Bio

I’m a lover of all things books, a hopeless romantic, and have always had a passion for writing. Between being a sappy romantic, my love of an HEA, my crazy imagination, and ok, let’s be real, my dirty mind, I fell easily into writing romance.
I’m a huge baseball fan and yet, a complete girly, girl. I’m an obsessive reader and have a slight (hahaha! Slight? Yeah, right) addiction to signed books.
I’m married to my very own book boyfriend, an alpha male with a sexy, sweet side. He is the best inspiration, my biggest supporter and the love of my life. He is also incredibly patient and understanding about the fact that he has to fight the voices in my head for my attention.
I hope you enjoy reading my books as much as I enjoyed writing them!

She is slightly obsessed with Theo James and funny animal memes. If you don’t mind these things, you should add her on facebook. Even better, make sure you don’t miss a new release by signing up for the newsletter below.

I get asked where my ideas come from. A lot. That’s a really hard one to answer, because it’s usually a build-up of vague ideas, conversations overheard (I do like to lurk), things I’ve seen or experienced, and sometimes just that weird alchemy that is imagination.
I carry a notebook everywhere in case inspiration strikes, and I’m often jotting down notes while I walk by the ocean with my four-legged best friend.

Excerpt:

Keaton looked at the winding stone staircase that led to a patio and an entrance into the Four Seasons. He knew because he sprinted these stairs in the morning.
“Those will take you to the lobby.” He released her waist and fisted his hands to keep the hunger in the pit of his stomach from driving him to grab her back.
She stared at him as if he’d spoken a foreign language for a moment, then extended her hand. “Come with me.”
The offer was so…sweet. It encompassed everything Brooke was—real and loving and warm and caring and honest. It encompassed everything Keaton thought he wanted.
“I…” He raked a hand through his hair, struggling against his habit to give in to desire whenever it suited him. “I can’t. You’re too…”
Her hand dropped, and a little frown creased her brow. “Too…?”
“Too sweet. Too good. Too important to me. Just too.”
She exhaled, closed the distance again, and pressed her body against his.
Keaton closed his eyes on a moan.
“Some men say,” she told him, her voice a sultry hum, “that there’s nothing like a good girl with a dirty mind. Where you’re concerned, my mind is good and dirty.”
Fire flared through his groin, and he forced his eyes open.
She was looking up at him with a gaze like the sparkling Caribbean rimmed in thick black lashes. Eyes he wanted to see in every stage of pleasure. He wanted to watch her eyes light with fire as he teased her with the promise of wicked excitement. Soak in the need drenching her expression as he pushed her past her comfort zone until she begged for him. Lose himself in the wild passion unleashed inside her when he drove her to ecstasy. And finally, the shock and awe of bliss as she recovered.
But this was Brooke, not a casual hookup. If their situations were different…
But they weren’t.
“Stop fighting yourself,” she said. “I can see your thoughts battling behind your eyes. If you aren’t interested, just say you aren’t.”
“I am,” he said immediately, vehemently. “I’ve wanted you since I met you in Vegas. I wanted you in California. I want you now. But I’m backing off for the same reasons I did then. Because I’m me, and my life is this, and you’re you, and your life is…”
He heaved a sigh, disgusted that he could talk endlessly and flawlessly about shit that didn’t matter, but now, when he needed someone he cared about to understand, his words got all tangled.
“Okay, stop,” she told him, her voice compassionate. Then she pressed her cheek to his chest, tightened her arms, and said, “Just stop talking and hold me.”
He closed his arms around her and laid his head on hers, his gut aching with regret. “I’m sorry—”
“Shush.” She cut him off. “Now count to twenty slowly.”
“What?”
“Just do it.”
She had to be the sweetest drill sergeant ever. So he did it. But somewhere around nine, her hands found their way under his tee, and her nails scored gentle patterns on his back, draining the stress from his body. And he lost count.
After another moment, she pulled back to look up at him. “Let me put something into perspective for you. We haven’t seen or spoken to each other in a year. After tonight, I won’t see you again for a long time. Neither of us knows how long. It could be another year. It could be longer. So the idea of not being together now to keep a vital friendship intact isn’t very realistic.”
He frowned, mulling that over.
“I think the reason you’re twisted over coming upstairs with me is because you’re a really good person and you don’t want to hurt me. But I’m a big girl, Keaton, and I’ve been navigating my way through hookups for years. I may be sweet, but I’m very open to being whatever you want or need for the night.”
Holy shit. Keaton’s mind strayed deeper into those sexual thoughts again—undressing her, getting his hands on her bare flesh, pushing his hips between her thighs, having her completely and totally wrapped around him…
His resistance slipped a notch.
He lifted one hand and rubbed his face, hoping to pull himself from this haze. “I can’t think.”
“That’s a good thing.” Her hand slid down his chest, his belly, rested on the waistband of his jeans. “You’ve been thinking too hard.”
And she flipped the button open.

About the Book

A second chance with her son’s secret father!

Widow Savannah Caldwell faces the challenge of her life: begging Trent Caldwell—her former fling and late husband’s brother—to save the family’s ailing music business. That she’s still attracted to Trent makes things hard; that Trent is her son’s secret father makes things impossible!

Trent is fiercely proud of making his own fortune, despite his controlling father. And he’s always believed his brother got the girl who should have been Trent’s. Now he’ll have the family business, and his brother’s widow in the bargain. But will their romantic reunion be waylaid by Savannah’s shocking baby secret?

Song Playlist: A prepared playlist of songs that embodies the book’s characters and their love story.

Savannah has loved Trent since she was a child. At first she had just wanted him to like her, and then as she entered high school, she’d developed a full-blown crush on him. It wasn’t until she went to New York City at eighteen to become a model that he started to see her as a woman. But she wanted to get married and a traditional family wasn’t something he couldn’t give her. And then she married his brother and Trent realized just how important she was to him. These songs reflect her longing and his regret.

Love Me – Katie Perry

Breathe – Michelle Branch

For the First Time – LeAnn Rimes

Love Story – Katharine McPhee

Take You High – Kelly Clarkson

Mumford & Son – Little Lion Man

I’m So Sorry – Imagine Dragons

Love Lessons Learned: Real life romance lessons learned from the book.

I love a second chances/reunited lovers story. How often do we not appreciate what we have until it’s gone? Trent Caldwell gets a pretty major reality check when the woman he takes for granted ends up marrying his brother. For a guy who never thought he’d ever let himself get attached, he finds out that’s not the case at all. Biggest lesson learned from The Black Sheep’s Secret Child, don’t assume those you love will always be there. Appreciate them every day.

Q&A with Cat Schield– The Black Sheep’s Secret Child

  • How did you come up with the relationship between Savannah and Trent? I always start with the conflict. And nothing says trouble like two brothers involved with the same girl.
  • What is your favorite part about writing for Billionaires and Babies? Is there anything more adorable than alpha men with babies? The first meeting between Trent and his son is adorable. I absolutely love Dylan. He’s a charmer.
  • Many of your books feature children, is family important to you? Family is everything. But for me it’s not always about those you’re related to. I think it’s about those people who stick with you through thick and thin.
  • What was the first book that made you cry? Black Gold by Marguerite Henry
  • How long do you spend researching before beginning a book? I usually jump right in without much research. For me the fun of writing the story is immersing myself in the details of the world. And I do a lot of research. Much of it never shows up in the book because I tend to run wild finding out about things. For The Black Sheep’s Secret Child I spent a fair amount of time learning about record labels and how many of them have struggled in the digital age.
  • How do you select the names of your characters? I whip out my favorite baby book and flip through the pages until something seems right. In the case of the Club T’s books, I needed 3 men with “T” names. So I have Trent Caldwell, Nate Tucker and Kyle Tailor.
  • If you didn’t write, what would you do for work? I think I’d take up creating marketing materials for authors. Book covers. Book trailers. I have a blast working on my own stuff.
  • Do you believe in writer’s block? No. Some books are painfully hard to write. I think a lot of writers have avoidance tendencies. I’m always choosing between sitting down to the computer and pushing through a challenging scene or watching yet another HGTV show. Often HGTV wins.
  • What is your favorite thing about fall? Fall in Minnesota is such a beautiful time of year. The trees burst into glorious colors. The days are warm. The nights are cool. It smells like campfires and dry leaves.
  • Are you excited for Halloween? If so, do you have a favorite scary story? I love Halloween. The pumpkin carving. Handing out candy. My daughter is 17 and too old for me to take trick or treating and I miss it. There’s something magical about helping her pick out a costume and walking the neighborhood and seeing all the fantastic decorations. No favorite scary story, but I do love going through a haunted house. Creepy!

On a whim, K. Bromberg decided to try her hand at this writing thing. Since then she has written The Driven Series (Driven, Fueled, Crashed, Raced, Aced), the standalone Driven Novels (Slow Burn, Sweet Ache, Hard Beat, and Down Shift), and a novella (UnRaveled). Tell Me Again by Michelle Major….Spotlight with excerpt & giveaway

tell-me-again-cover

About Tell Me Again

As a teenager, Samantha Carlton used a career in modeling to break free from her painful childhood—walking away from her reckless twin sister, an alcoholic mother, and the boy she loved. Yet she never outran the guilt of abandoning her family. When the past shows up on her doorstep in the form of her late sister’s daughter, Sam opens her home and her heart to the girl she never knew existed. But it’s not so easy to face the man she left behind…

Sam had shattered Trevor Kincaid’s heart, and he’d sought comfort in her sister’s arms. But he’d pledged to shield his daughter, Grace, from the drama that followed the Carlton women. Now Grace has tracked down Sam, and Trevor is forced to deal with the one woman he wanted to forget.

History has a way of repeating itself, and the sparks between Sam and Trevor reignite an old flame. But as much as Sam wants a new future, is walking away again easier than risking her heart for a second chance at love?

Excerpt:

Trevor’s hand settled over hers, squeezing gently.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered. “It was a jackass thing to say, and I’m sorry.”

She didn’t pull away her hand, but she wouldn’t look at him, either. “Part of you believes it.”

“That’s not—”

“Part of me believes it,” she said with a harsh laugh, yanking on the latch and in doing so, shaking off his touch. “I may not want to hear it, but that doesn’t make it less true. It was another form of selling myself . . . my face . . . a promise of something that wasn’t real. And the way I acted supported it. God, the things she’s seen if she’s Googled me.”

She opened the door and stepped into the shed, wiping down the bow and placing it in its case on the shelf. The familiar movements settled her frayed nerves. When she turned, Trevor was blocking her way out.

He moved closer, crowding her, and then reached for her when she would have turned away again. “You’re real and you’re not the person you were before,” he said, cupping her face with his hands.

They were warm, the pads of his fingers slightly callused. Her eyes drifted closed as a thousand sparks buzzed along her skin, a tremor of awareness moving up and down her body, lighting the dormant fires of need and want she’d safely buried.

Nothing about Trevor was safe.

“Look at me, Sam.”

She did, meeting the intensity of his pale blue eyes. The golden slivers that ringed them seemed to glow with desire as he looked at her. Desire for her.

“I’m sorry,” he said again. “You got out of that town. Away from your mother and all the bad shit that filled her world. You made a life for yourself, and I can’t fault you for that.”

“It could have been different for all of us. I wanted to take you with me. I wanted you and Bryce both to—”

“I know, honey.” He leaned in, brushed his mouth across hers. The touch was featherlight, and his lips were soft, completely at odds with the hard strength of the rest of him. His hands cradled her, making her feel cherished. The gentle pressure of his mouth made her feel wanted.

It was embarrassing how much she craved this wanting. Trevor was the only man who had ever expected her to be more than a pretty face. He saw her, and while it was terrifying to think she might come up lacking, it was also exhilarating.

Despite her fears and doubts, she deepened the kiss. She invited him in, shyly tangled her tongue with his. He moaned, and the sound was like a hundred gold stars for good behavior. It gave her confidence to press her body to his, to twine her fingers in the soft hair at the nape of his neck.

Not surprisingly, they fit together perfectly. In this way, they always had. His kiss turned demanding and Sam met each of his silent claims with a demand of her own. Desire swirled through her and when his hand skimmed down her neck to trace the hollow at the base of her throat, she sucked in a breath.

And wanted.

God, how she wanted.

More. Everything. To pretend like nothing else mattered except this moment.

But it did.

Sam couldn’t forget the past that had shaped her and the fact that he’d kept her from her sister’s child.

Gasping for air, she pulled away, pressing her fingers to lips that were swollen from Trevor’s kisses.

“We have to get back to Grace,” she said, ignoring the rough edge to her voice. The need still pulsing through her.

Trevor gave a small nod and placed his hands on his hips. His chest rose and fell in the same way hers did, and it was a slight comfort to know she wasn’t the only one struggling to regain control at this moment.

They were silent as they left the shed. Trevor shut the door and locked it but took Sam’s hand as they moved toward the path. The sky was beginning to streak with patterns of pink and gold. She felt suspended in this quiet corner of her property, the forest around them lending to the intimacy of the moment.

“I will apologize for a lot of things when it comes to you,” he said, lifting her knuckles to his mouth. “But not for kissing you.”

“We shouldn’t go there,” she whispered, even though she wanted to go there so badly it left a gaping hole in her heart.

“We’ll see about that,” he answered with a wry smile. “Getting my hands on you seems to be the only thing I’m clear about right now. ”

Top 5 Things You Need to Know About Trevor Kincaid

  1. He’s a contractor so you know he’s good with his hands.
  2. His daughter means the world to him. So much so that when she was little, he learned to braid hair and could throw a mean tea party.
  3. He thinks women are most beautiful with no makeup, preferably waking up in his bed.
  4. He can rock a pair of low slung jeans like nobody’s business.
  5. Trevor likes to believe he’s strong, but Sam Carlton may be his one weakness.

His Best Mistake by Dian Alberts…Excerpt Reveal

Shillings Agency #6

One night with a stranger…

Security expert Mark Matthews has loved, and lost, and has no intention of ever loving again—especially not a woman who thrives on her life being in danger. Now, hot, meaningless sex with strangers he had no intention of ever seeing again? That’s a whole other story. And it’s all life as a single father allows him to enjoy. But when he meets a woman who refuses to tell him her real name, the game is on, because she’s everything he swore to stay away from. Daisy O’Rourke has bad idea written all over her, but he’s in too deep to walk away now…

Chapter One

He’s been dead for two years. Two long, lonely years.
At times, it was almost impossible to believe it had been that long since she lost him, and at others…it felt all too possible. She missed him more and more every day. If anything, the pain just deepened and split her open inside, like a huge, jagged chasm that would never go away no matter how much time passed.
“Next up on the Augusta Eye Witness News, tragedy on Sixth Street.” The newscaster on the television gave a half smile, her pink-lipstick-coated mouth parting to show perfectly white teeth. “Police were dispatched to a home on the fourteenth block of Greene Street today in response to a domestic disturbance. Authorities say a man held his wife at gunpoint, but the Maine State Police were able to end the standoff with no casualties. More to come on the eleven o’clock news tonight.”
Daisy tightened her grip on her empty martini glass, frowning down at the cast on her arm. “You see that? Look what we’re missing.”
A month ago, she’d been on a case similar to that one. The perp had been an abusive husband who’d been two bottles of cheap whiskey into a binge. When she’d tried to take him down, he evaded her on a fire escape, and when she tried to follow him, she’d slipped on the wet metal and her arm snapped like a twig. So now she was stuck on desk duty until it healed, while the asshole who’d thought beating his wife and then fleeing down a wet fire escape had been a good idea walked free…after his wife dropped charges.
It killed her that she wasn’t out on the streets, doing what she did best…saving lives. Without her job, without her passion, she was floundering in the middle of the ocean without even a hope of a rescue boat coming along to save her. It was who she was.
And now she was stuck with nothing.
Her phone buzzed, and she glanced down at the text.
It was her best friend, Lauren. Are you there yet?
Daisy rolled her eyes and picked up the phone. Yes, mother.
I can’t help it that I’m worried about you.
Relax. I’m at a hotel less than an hour away from you. It’s not like I ran away to live in a foreign jungle with Tarzan.
The reply was immediate. I wish you would run away with Tarzan. You need some action.
No, I need peace and quiet.
Three dots popped up, and then: Fine. Whatever. Enjoy it. I’ll be there late tomorrow morning. See you then?
I’ll be here.
Though she still wasn’t really sure why she was here in the first place. She knew the couple getting married tomorrow, sure, but not well enough to be invited to their wedding. The only reason she was on the list was because she was friends with Lauren, whose fiancé worked for the groom as a private security agent at The Shillings Agency, and that somehow gained her an invite.
Whatever.
She’d take it.
God knew she could use a break from her normal life…which was why she was at the hotel a day early. Living with a roommate who was also on the force was both a blessing and a curse. Lately, it had been more curse than blessing. It was just…she just felt so…
Empty.
The news music played, and Daisy glanced up again.
“Good evening,” the newscaster said. “Tonight, our head story is a tragic crash on Werner Street that ended in a horrifying death. A gray sedan was driving—”
That’s just what I needed tonight. Another reminder of what I’ve loved and lost. Thanks, Universe. I needed that.
Turning away, Daisy blinked rapidly and held her glass up to the bartender. She didn’t usually drink, with good reason, but tonight was an exception to that rule. And it was time for another one. And then maybe another. Her plan was to drink until it didn’t hurt anymore…as many as it took. Like father, like daughter, she supposed.
As the server made his way over, someone sat beside her. Daisy glanced over, already annoyed because she wasn’t here to flirt, or talk, or make friends. She was here to forget.
But then she locked gazes with the deepest, darkest, prettiest brown eyes she’d ever seen, and any irritation at the interruption of her emo mood was shattered. The man next to her was tall, impossibly so. Even though he was sitting down, she’d easily place him at six foot three or more. He had blond hair, which looked as if he constantly ran his fingers through it all day long, and stubble darkened his jaw…which had a freaking dimple in it. He glanced over at her and froze, his eyes narrowing when he caught her staring.
Cheeks heating, she turned away as fast as she could, breathing quickly. Her stomach tightened into a knot, and she stiffened because this was a feeling she hadn’t experienced in two years.
Ever since…
“Hello,” the man next to her said, offering an easy smile. Damn it, he was even hotter when he smiled. Why couldn’t he have crooked teeth, or an even more crooked smile? Couldn’t the universe do her one teensy weensy favor and make this guy a little less attractive?
But noooooooo.
“Mind if I sit here?” he asked quietly, his voice filled with deep respect. She had the feeling he was the type of guy who would never raise his voice in anger. Never lose his cool.
She happened to like men who were calm in the face of chaos.
“And if I politely decline?” she asked, like she always did when men hit on her in bars. It always made them shrink away and seek out easier targets.
He blinked. “Then I’d politely sit and drink my drink without bothering you, one seat over this way, because I want to watch the game, and the TV is over here.”
Gah! That was the perfect response.
Damn him.
Tucking her probably frizzy hair behind her ear, she forced a cool smile despite her racing heart. “I’m not saving the seat for anyone, so feel free to sit where you want.”
“Excellent.” He set his phone down on the bar next to hers. “How are you tonight?”
“Good. Great. Wonderful.”
A smile played at his lips again. “You’re empty.”
How did he know? “What?”
“Your glass.” He pointed at it. His fingers were long and lean, yet somehow strong, and coated with a light dusting of blond hair. “It’s empty.”
She tore her eyes off his fingers, pressing a hand to her stomach, which felt a hell of a lot emptier than her glass. Get over yourself, Daisy. They’re just fingers. “Oh. Right. I was about to get another.”
“Excellent.” When the bartender came up, the guy next to her gestured at her glass. “We’ll have two of whatever she’s having.”
The bartender started to walk away, but she held up a hand and he stopped, smiling flirtatiously at her. He’d been acting interested all night, but it hadn’t done a thing to her insides. Not like the guy beside her had within seconds of arriving. Ugh.
“You might want to rethink that, sir. I’m having a cosmo,” Daisy said, eyeing the man who’d managed to turn her on…or upside down…whatever. “It’s pink. And frothy.”
The man hesitated, laughing. “Uh…I happen to like pink drinks.”
“No, you don’t,” she said, tapping her fingers on the bar, and shooting him what was hopefully a playful smile, but probably came off more like a hyena on the prowl because she didn’t have a single frigging playful bone in her body and never had. “You’re just trying to play along. Act cool. Pretend not to be emasculated by the threat of a pink drink. Go on—get a whiskey instead, if you want. I won’t think less of you.”
Yep. That totally came out as more of a challenge than a flirtatious reply.
Daisy: 0. Hot guy: 1.
“Two cosmos, please. The pinker, the better.” After the bartender headed off, hot guy leaned in, shooting her an easygoing grin. “It happens to be my favorite color.”
She lifted a brow. “Is that so?”
“Yeah.” He lifted his leg. “I’ll prove it.”
Daisy blinked down at it in confusion. “What—?”
“See?” He rested the bottom of his black shoe on the side of her bar stool, lifting his pants leg. His socks were gray-and-pink plaid. “Told ya.”
A laugh escaped her. She couldn’t help it…but she did choke it off right away. It felt wrong, being amused by another man, today of all days. “Okay. Fine. I get it. You like pink. I do, too.”
“Is it your favorite color?” He smiled. “Because if it is, we already have something in common.”
Fighting back a smile, because he was so refreshing and playful and different from the men she usually met at bars, she shook her head. “Sorry.”
He held a hand to his heart. “Darling, you’re killing me. Please say it’s not blue.”
“It’s not,” she said, laughing, then pointed to the purse sitting next to her phone on the bar. “It’s yellow.”
He eyed her purse. “Yellow?”
“Yep. Guilty as charged. Guess we don’t have anything in common after all.” She lifted a shoulder and shoved her hair behind her ear again. To the left of them, a gorgeous blonde who was perfectly put together from head to toe watched the man next to her with hungry eyes. Daisy forced her focus off the other woman uncomfortably, because she had a feeling her eyes were just as hungry, and she didn’t like that. “Sorry.”
“I don’t think I’d say that…” He lowered his foot, watching her closely. The way he looked at her, all heated stare and hard jawline, made her stomach tighten enough to scare the crap out of her. She didn’t know this guy—didn’t need to be feeling things she had no interest in feeling.
It was time to end this flirtation before she did something stupid…
Like kiss him.
After a few seconds of silence on her part, he cleared his throat and held his hand out. “Since we exchanged favorite colors, I guess I should introduce myself? My name is—”
“Don’t,” Daisy inserted quickly, her tone tinged with a little bit of panic. The second she learned his name, she would never forget it…or him. It’s better not knowing.
His brow furrowed. “Don’t what?”
“Don’t do your spiel on me. The flirting. The smiles. The shared laughs. It won’t work.” She pushed his hand down, not shaking it. “You don’t have to tell me your name, either.”
He frowned. “Okay. I was just—”
“Look. You’re a nice guy and all, but I’m not the kind of girl who is going to go back to your room and show you if my panties match my purse. And I don’t need to know if your boxers match your socks.” She gestured to his feet, her cheeks on fire because, God, this is why she didn’t go out with guys, or engage in idle conversations with them at the bar. She wasn’t ready. Plus, she sucked at small talk. And flirting. And, you know, being cute and friendly. “I’m not that girl. I’m just a girl in a bar, drinking a few drinks, before I go back to my room…alone.”
When he didn’t say anything, just stared at her, she did the worst thing possible.
She started blabbering, because she and awkward silence we’re not friends.
“I’m not being a bitch. I just don’t play games, and you seem like a nice guy, so I don’t want to waste your time. If you’re looking to get laid tonight, you’ll have better luck with the blonde in the corner. She’s watching you like she’s just waiting for me to walk away so she can pounce.” She pointed at her, not even bothering to hide it. “I bet she’ll like your socks.”
“Wait.” He blinked, shifting back, but not leaving. “Are you saying that you don’t like my socks?”
“I…” She opened her mouth, closed it, opened it again, and nothing came out. Because out of all the things she said, he focused on that? “I…I like them. They’re perfectly nice socks.”
“So you do like my socks?”
She let out a nervous laugh. “Yeah. Sure. I like your socks. But that’s not the—”
“Oh, thank God.” He gave her an easy smile. How did he do that? Look so…so…casually hot? “I was about to get up and walk away.” The bartender came over with their drinks, and he paid before she could even open her purse. “Thank you,” he said to the server, who nodded and left them alone again.
She wasn’t sure what this dude’s game was, but if he walked away because she’d told him he wouldn’t get laid, that would say a lot about him.
He turned back to her, still smiling. When he saw her staring at him speculatively, he sighed. “Look, I didn’t come over here to get you naked in my bed. I came over to talk to you because, to be honest, you looked a little sad. And I hate seeing women sad.”
She swallowed hard, not sure what to say to that because he was right. She was sad, but it wasn’t something she wanted to talk about, especially with a stranger.
When she remained silent, he shifted closer. “If you don’t mind, I’d like to keep talking to you. But if you’d rather be alone, I’ll take my pink drink, and slide over a seat or two to give you space. I’m not interested in the blonde woman. I’m interested in you, and making you smile a few times, if you’ll let me.”
She should send this guy packing, because he was tempting her in ways she wasn’t ready to be tempted. She opened her mouth, and the stupidest thing she’d ever said came out instead. “I’d like that. You can stay.”

No one can take him down. He’s unstoppable.

But even a suit of armor has its weak point, and Grant’s has always been Ryan Hale.
They were a couple of kids when they fell in love, and just when it looked like the happy ending neither expected was within reach, Ryan disappeared. No explanations. No good-byes.

Grant coped by throwing himself into the game for seven years, and he’s finally moved on. Or so he thinks.

When she walks back into his life, all of those feelings come crashing back, despite the warnings in his head that tell him she’ll leave him again. Grant can withstand the league’s toughest defensive line, but he’s always been weak where she’s concerned.

No man can take Grant Turner down.

But one woman certainly can.

One woman will.

Grant motioned for me to wait when I started to open my door, then he jogged around to open it himself. “This is a date. That means I drop you off in front, walk you up to the front door . . .”
He took my hand and helped me out, grinning all goofy-like when the hem of my dress slid up my legs as I crawled out.
“Give me a goodnight kiss?” I added as I let him take my hand.
He peered over at me, brow raised. “Or a good night something.”
Giving him a light shove, I tried not to pretend that a good night something sounded as appealing to me as it did to him. “I never should have told you it’s been seven years since my last time.”
“Yes, you definitely should have.”
“Why’s that?”
He grinned at the ground. “Because I can use that knowledge in my favor.”
“How does knowing that work in your favor?” I angled toward him as we climbed the stairs together.
After we’d stopped in front of the door, he turned and pulled me closer. “Because I know how bad you need it now.”
The skin on the back of my neck raised, my lips parting from the acceleration of my breath. “How do you know it’s not a case of the longer you go without it, the less you need it?”
“No,” he said at last, his head slowly shaking. “Not with something like that. Not with someone like you.” Grant moved closer, not stopping until his chest was pressing into mine, walking me backward until my back ran into the wall. “In fact, I bet you’ve gone so long, I could barely touch you and you’d fall apart in my arms. Am I right?”
My chest was brushing against his, my legs feeling weak from what was happening. Or what was about to happen. Or what I was imagining was about to happen.
“No,” I whispered, “you’re not right.”
His eyes called me out. “There’s only one way to know who’s right.” He kissed the outside of my neck before lightly sucking on my earlobe.
The moan he drew from me seemed to sweep across the entire estate. My hand clamped over my mouth, but he pried it away.
“No. I don’t want you stifling the sounds you make for me.” Holding my wrist, he slid my hand up the wall until my arm was fully extended above me. The stone was still warm from the sun, heat seeping into my skin. “Other hand,” he ordered before sinking his teeth into my lobe.
The sensation made me jolt against him, but all he did was press his body into mine harder until I felt trapped between two walls of stone. When I lifted my other hand for him, he gathered it up in his hand with my other wrist. The task of winding around both of my wrists was no challenge for hands the size of his.
Once he had me pinned, he rocked his hips into mine, practically lifting me up the wall. Another moan escaped from my mouth, but this one was more a cry of pleasure. He was right. He’d barely have to touch me.
His other hand moved from the bend of my hip to reach something above us.
“What are you doing?” I breathed, my ribs feeling as though they’d crack from the way my heart was pounding.
“Unscrewing this light bulb,” he said, right before the wash of light disappeared and darkness moved in around us. “And now, I’m going to take care of you.”

To her, he’s a distraction, yet Kade Evans is everything she shouldn’t want. Instinct tells her to run, but she can’t get him out of her mind.

But maybe, just maybe, he can be the one to pull her from the shadows before the darkness swallows her…for good.

Exclusive Excerpt

“Why? I don’t understand what the big deal is. Can’t you just move it so I can go out and live my life?”

Another crack of lightning illuminates the sky. The responding thunder rumbles in the background as the torrent of rain falls upon the ground. The cold, bitter wind howls against the glass as it presses forward, matching the mood inside the car.

“The big deal? Adrienne, you’re sixteen years old. There is no way we’re going to let you go to an overnight concert two hours away with that boy,” Mom says from the front passenger seat.

That boy? Ugh, why does she have to say it like he’s a disease? Just because Brian isn’t from our side of town doesn’t mean he’s not good enough. Sure, he dresses in nothing but baggy jeans and leather jackets, but he listens to me, treats me like a human and not a piano playing robot. In fact, half the time we’re able to sneak away together, the piano never comes into the conversation. I don’t have to pretend to be someone I’m not with him. I can just be me, whoever that is. Most days I’m not even sure anymore.

“You know how important this weekend is to your career. You need to be there,” Dad adds.

I let out a frustrated groan and stomp my foot. “No! I’m sick and tired of playing on your schedule. You’re always trying to run my life. When do I get to have a say in what I do, or where I go, and when I play?” I run a hand through my hair, yanking at the roots. “You know what? Maybe I’ll give up the piano altogether just so I can be a normal teenager for once in my life!”

Playing the piano has been my world since I first crawled onto the bench at the age of three. My fingers hit the keys and played a simple melody: Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. I had listened and watched my mother play it so many times I knew exactly what to do. That’s when my life, my freedom to choose, ended. Piano lessons, performances, traveling concerts, scholarships to private schools to work on my music, voice lessons, and anything else related to better my ability. Not once have I been able to go out on a Friday with friends. Those nights were dedicated to showing everyone that the local piano prodigy is going to make a name for herself.

“Sweetie, you have the rest of your life to do what you want. What we’re doing now is helping you succeed for the future. You have a gift, and it shouldn’t be wasted,” she says. “Trust me, Adrienne, you’ll thank us later. Besides, it’s only for a few more years.” She turns and pats my leg. “I wouldn’t be surprised if the orchestra asks you to play with them for the new season.”

“Maybe I don’t want to play with the orchestra. Maybe I want to do something for myself.” I can feel the heat crawl up my neck the more this conversation doesn’t go my way. Time for the kill. “You can’t live your life through me. Eventually, you’re going to have to deal with the fact that you’re a washed up nobody who can’t play the piano anymore, Mom.”
A twinge of pain hits me as I watch my mom’s face fall from the sharpness of my words. It’s not like I’m asking for much. One weekend of normalcy is all. That shouldn’t be too much to ask for.

“Adrienne, you’re not going, and that’s final. You will go to this performance, and you will play the piano. And when they offer you the seat with the orchestra, you will accept.” The scowl Dad gives me in the rearview mirror almost makes me shrink back in my seat. “We are done talking about this. It’s what’s best for your future,” he says with the utmost finality in his voice.

I lift my face to the ceiling and let out a frustrated yell. “You don’t understand! I hate you! I hate you both! I’m nearly an adult. I should be making decisions about my life!”

Angry bolts of lightning flash across the sky, creating a distraction from the deafening rain pelting the car. Within seconds, the car shakes and rocks with the roar of thunder and gusts of wind. Darkness surrounds us again as the sky opens up, releasing its fury.

Suddenly, the car jerks and we float across the water on the road. Dad’s knuckles turn white before he corrects us. The wipers can barely keep up, making it nearly impossible to see.

Dad turns his head to say something, only he never has the chance to speak.

Mom clutches his shoulder, pulling at his shirt.

Everything moves in slow motion. Scenes flash before my eyes. Blinding white lights pour in from the oncoming vehicle. Our screams echo in my ears as I brace for impact.

And then there’s nothing.

No sound.

No lights.

Nothing.

I don’t know where I am or how much time has passed. Faint voices sound above me, while machines beep in the background. I can’t move. I can only listen to what the voices are saying.

“We need to get her to an OR, stat,” a man says.

“How’s her pressure?” someone else asks.

“Eighty over forty.” The woman’s voice grows fainter as the darkness threatens to pull me under again.

“Now, people, move it! We’re going to lose her.”

I want to move, but nothing works. I want to cry, to scream, to ask what happened, but I have no voice. Something’s wrong. Why won’t my body respond?

Sounds fade in and out, the voices and machines are a constant now, the only reminders I’m still here.

“She’s stable now,” a familiar masculine voice says. “She’ll need to stay here in ICU for a while, though. How’s her family?”

“Died on impact,” another voice says. “They never had a chance. She was lucky she was in the back seat.”

Darkness.

Quiet.

Alone.

It’s what I wanted.

It’s what I asked for.

I guess what they say is true.

Be careful what you wish for.
