button synopsis

Ever since he rescued her from a dangerous kidnapper, Mystery Mullins has wanted Axel Dillon. When he returned her to her Hollywood father and tabloid life, she was grateful…and a little in love. Mystery wasn’t ready to let Axel go, even after the soldier gently turned her away because, at nineteen, she was too young.

Now, six years later, Mystery is grown, with a flourishing career and a full life—but she’s still stuck on Axel. Disguised, she propositions him in a bar, and the night they spend together is beyond her wildest dreams. Mystery steels herself to walk away—except the sheets are barely cold when her past comes back to haunt her.

Once he realizes Mystery isn’t the stranger he thought, Axel is incensed and intrigued. But when it’s clear she’s in danger, he doesn’t hesitate to become her protector—and her lover—again. And as the two uncover a secret someone is willing to kill for, Axel is determined to claim Mystery’s heart before a murderer silences her for good.

REVIEW

Jessica Sorensen is the reason I love reading YA so much!!  And this book just proves why she rocks at it!!

This book made me feel giddy throughout the whole thing.  Yes, there were some moments where I wanted to bash some heads but the overall feeling was happy and proud.

Luna has some very odd and off-the-wall parents.  How she survived living with them til now, is completely beyond me.  But she’s had her awesome group of friends to keep her moving forward and not completely falling into the messed up world her parents think is normal.

Grey – even at his young age, he makes me swoon.  LOL  He’s a good with a great head on his shoulders, but for quite some time, it was clouded by outside forces.  After he’s dealt a huge blow, it opens his eyes a bit more.

Luna and Grey really grew throughout this book.  And they helped each other along the way.  Watching their interactions with each other and Luna’s friends just really makes you smile.

Jessica really knows how to keep things intense yet light.  You get drawn into the story and find yourself grinning, laughing and next thing you know, the book is ending.  She’s that damn good!!!  All of the characters are quite interesting and we are given tidbits of information about each of them – just enough that we are going to want to know more.

I am looking forward to reading more in this series!!  Great start!

Excerpt

He reaches out and molds his hands around mine, bringing me the smallest amount of comfort. “Can you do me a favor? The next time something happens when you feel that pressure, can you talk to me first before you do anything?”

“You really want me to keep talking to you after what I just told you?”

“You think I’d stop liking you because you steal sometimes?” He shakes his head in disbelief. “Luna, I let my friends torture you for years. If anything, you shouldn’t be sitting here, talking to me.”

About A Lover’s Lament:

In a matter of seconds my entire world changed, and it was in that moment that I stopped living and simply began to exist.

In my grief, I sent a letter to the first boy I ever loved. I hoped in writing it I’d find some peace from the nightmare I was living, some solace in my anger.

I didn’t expect him to write back. I wasn’t prepared for his words, and I certainly wasn’t ready for the impact this soldier would have on my life. A deep-rooted hate transformed into friendship, and then molded into a love like I’d never known before.

Sergeant Devin Ulysses Clay did what I couldn’t: he put the shattered pieces of my heart back together, restoring my faith in humanity and teaching me how to live again.

But now that I’m whole, I have a decision to make. Do I return to my life as I knew it and the fiancé I left behind, or do I walk away from it all for the only man to ever break my heart?

***

I’ve been living in hell, but you won’t hear me complain.

These men depend on me, as I do them, and this brotherhood is the only family I’ve ever known.

The Army saved me from a callous mother and a life on the wrong side of the tracks that was quickly spiraling out of control. So unlike most of the men in my platoon, going home wasn’t something I longed for.

I was content overseas, spending my days defending this country that gave me my life back. Fighting became my new normal … until her.

A letter from Katie Devora—a letter that I almost didn’t open. Her words put a fire back inside of me that I didn’t know I’d lost. She gave me hope during a time when I was fighting every day just to stay alive, and now it’s time I fight for her.

My Review:

A Lover’s Lament is a joint work from author KL Grayson and debut author BT Urruela and is, hands down, one of the most emotional and touching books I’ve ever read. I loved every single second of this book.

Young love wasn’t very kind to Devin and Katie. The love that they found in their youth had been torn apart when Devin moved away and even though, years later, they had both moved on in very different directions, they both thought of one another often. Neither one of them ever could have imagined that by a cruel twist of fate they would be brought back together. Neither one was  ready for what lay ahead for them but one thing they both knew: this was a second chance, one they needed to grab onto with both hands and hold on tight.

But sometimes second chances aren’t without sacrifice, pain, and loss…

I can assure right now that as I sit and type this review I am indeed crying. As I said earlier this was one of the most emotional books I have ever read. Knowing BT is a veteran and that the things Katie and Devin go through in this story is a very real situation the men and women in our military deal with every day made my heart hurt. It also gave me such a deep appreciation for what they do and the families they have supporting them along the way. Of course it also gave a taste of what they live through day in and day out and the worry for their loved one’s safety. I can’t even imagine what it must be like. That being said, the letters and emails between Katie and Devin were such a bright spot and gave me such hope for this rekindled relationship. I wanted nothing more than for Devin to return home to Katie and for them to live their lives together. Their correspondence gave such beautiful depth to their relationship and I loved reading it. There truly is something to be said for long distance love and the bond that it creates.

Now, I have to say, this ending of this book had me in hysterics. No joke. I was ready to hyperventilate. To say that I was worried sick would be the understatement of the year! Luckily, even though it wasn’t without some sadness, things end up ok. I honestly don’t think I have ever, EVER, been that worried for a book couple as I was in this instance.

Emotional, beautiful, moving, and touching, A Lover’s Lament is a book everyone needs to read. I gained such an appreciation for so much I have in my life after reading this book and an even bigger appreciation for all the men and women in uniform and the loved ones who support them. Thank you K.L. and B.T. for writing this story. It’s truly a gift.

Exclusive Excerpt:

I wake before the sun has checked in for the day and scan the tent, noting my men still sleeping heavily. My morning ritual, at least the days I have time to do it, requires a bit of privacy, and I make certain I have it before I begin. Most of these clowns will just jerk it from their cots in the middle of the night with the rest of us passed out around them. There’s always been something odd about that to me. On a regular basis, I’ve woken up to the sounds of heavy breathing and skin slapping skin, and it pisses me the fuck off. If I’m not dog-tired, they’ll get a boot heaved in their direction, aimed straight for the dick and with the express purpose of putting them out of business for a while.

No, jackin’ the beanstalk in public isn’t for me. Unfortunately, that leaves only one other place to do it—the Drop Zone. Porta-shitters, as we like to call them, sit for weeks without being emptied and capture every bit of the sun’s heat. It’s like a fucking greenhouse in there, and one breath in that motherfucker while beating off and your dick is in full retreat.

So there’s a trick to doing this just right; you have to prep him first. You get him up and going, and then you quickly finish in the shitter. For most of these guys, the bikini-clad chicks above their cots or the porno mags stashed in their bags are a necessity for a proper jerk-off, but I’m an imaginative guy. I close my eyes and my mind becomes like a time machine of fuck. Marilyn Monroe in Some Like it Hot … bam! … cum everywhere. Farrah Fawcett in her iconic red swimsuit bent over the counter … set the time machine and go.

This time my mind goes for none other than Jackie O. She’s spread-eagle, with my tongue lightly flicking her throbbing clit while she’s begging for my dick. And, of course, I’m making her call me Mr. President. I laugh at the last thought but notice it’s at least gotten the job started. Since my dick is half-mast and ticking its way to full form, I slink my way to the tent’s entrance.

Stepping out, I’m met by the sun creeping softly over the tops of the barriers, and I hurry toward the porta-shitters, positioned just past the Humvees in front of the eastern wall. This two-hundred-yard walk is the most important part of the process. You have to walk with speed but not urgency, in hopes that you don’t attract attention from the few others also awake—all while the imagined porn still reels in your head.

I manage to make it into the shitter undetected and quickly go to work on my shaft while my left hand pinches my nose like a vise and my eyes squeeze tightly shut. Only this time it isn’t someone famous that I picture. It’s Katie.

Even as early as it is, the Drop Zone is like a sauna, and beads of sweat collect on my forehead. I try desperately to hold in my breath as the seconds tick down. Just as my lungs begin to demand air and my body stiffens, I toss my head back with a stifled groan. My body recovers from its high much quicker in this setting, but at least the job is done. Two weeks of combat stress gone, just like that.

Exclusive Excerpt:

A screech echoes through the woods. The sound is like a nail scraped against tin and raises the tiny hairs on the back of my neck. It’s the unmistakable caw of a crow. Spinning, I search the dimness for the source. Before my eyes can focus, a glossy black shadow bursts through a sheet of Spanish moss draped on a nearby live oak.

Shrieking, I cover my head with my hands and duck, then dart toward the path that brought me here. The bird pursues, flapping its large wings and gaining ground fast. With a whoosh, it swoops from the sky and slams into me, sinking its talons into my arm. I scream, then thrash around, trying to knock it loose. Its spiky nails clamp deeper into my flesh.

“Get off her!” Cooper’s voice booms.

Tears, the very best kind, surge. I’ve never been so happy to have him near. “Help!” I lamely shake my arm again, but the psychotic bird hangs on.

Cooper’s feet pound against the dirt as he races toward me and my winged assailant. As he draws close, the crow squawks, then jams its beak into my scalp, yanking out a clump of hair.

Pain, brilliant yellow and blinding, flashes across my vision. I wail, overcome.

“Emma, duck.”

I drop to my knees. Something hard thumps against the bird, launching it into the air like a golf ball from a tee. Its piercing caw bounces across the clearing. As the bird soars into the moonlit sky, it attempts to beat its wings, but something’s wrong. Only one of its feathered sides extends. Midair the shiny black crow stalls then careens back toward the earth. Just as I’m sure it’s headed straight for us, the lame wing unfolds then beats furiously to avoid what is sure to be a deadly collision. Veering off, it follows a wobbly flight path toward the shadowy forest.

Cooper tosses a long, heavy stick onto the ground, then reaches for my hand and pulls me to my feet. “Are you okay?” His wide hands clutch my arms as his eyes search mine.

“I—I think so.” My voice shakes as I work to process all that’s happened in the last few minutes. My temperature drops as shock sets in. Was it real, or just an immensely screwed-up dream? One glance at the slick streak of blood dripping down my skin confirms my new wound, though I can’t tell how bad it is until I see it in the light.

Grabbing me close, he wraps his strong arms around my back. The heady scent of his Cooperness swirls around me, filling me with familiar warmth that heads off my shock. My thoughts zoom to the red stain that has likely already smeared his polo. “I’m bleeding.” I try to pull away.

“I know.” He grips me close, like he’s fallen from a ship and I’m the only life preserver.

“But it’ll get it on your shirt.” A tear streams down the side of my face.

He pulls away, just enough to meet my gaze. “Who cares about my shirt? I thought I lost you, Emmaline.” Brushing his thumb against my cheek, he wipes away the salty liquid.

“But you didn’t. You saved me.”

“I was almost too late.” His voice is breathy and so full of despair it nearly breaks my heart.

Tensions are high on the ranch when circumstances threaten to take it under. His dad and brothers pressure him to stay home and become an active cowboy on the ranch. However, Merek is addicted to the road and rodeo. He’s home anytime he can be and provides plenty of money to keep the family ranch afloat, but sometimes it takes more than what’s in the bank to protect tradition.

Now home on a three-month break, Merek finds himself all tied up with the new girl in town. She’s quiet and reserved but there’s something about Challis’ green eyes and feisty attitude that makes her irresistible. When he runs into her at a rodeo and catches a glimpse of her on horseback all hopes of leaving her alone flies out the window.

There are several rumors floating around town about her, however that doesn’t stop Merek from going after what he wants. He knows she’s off limits and only full of trouble, but Merek thrives on trouble and adrenaline.

Then the road calls again and it’s time to leave.

8 Second Decision Teaser

Excerpt

It’s nearly dusk as the light clouds whirl around in the sky. My head begins to spin even faster and I feel my back sink down the side of the trailer. I slip off the ledge I was halfway sitting on and take a chug from the bottle. My ass hits the ground with a thud and I laugh out loud. Fuck, even my laugh sounds slurred.

“You okay?”

I look up into the most beautiful face I’ve ever seen. Unfortunately, it’s attached to Merek’s body.

“I’s fineeee.” I draw out the word fine to cover up why my speech is so slurred. I stiffen into an upright position trying to act as sober as possible.

Merek kneels down in front of me.

“Wants a drink?” I hold out the bottle to him noticing there’s only about a swallow or two left.

“Challis, did you drink all of this?”

I just shrug my shoulders.

“You’re going to be one hurting cowgirl in the morning.”

I watch as he sets it down at his feet.

“Drink,” I yell. His eyes flash between me and down to the bottle.

“What?” I try to stand on my feet. “Am I not good enough for you?”

“Challis.” His hands grip my shoulders as I tumble forward.

“I just set a fucking record in that arena. Beat all the hometown girls with their daddy’s money behind them and you won’t drink my wisskey?”

Merek has me wrapped up in one arm while he chuckles at me, which only pisses me off even further.

“Don’t.” I pound into his chest.

“Okay, sorry. Sorry.” He bends down, snagging the bottle from the ground. “Is this what you want, Challis?” He dangles the bottle in front of my face.

“I want you to have a drink with me.” I clutch the bottom of the bottle and help guide it to his lips.

“Okay, okay, calm down.” He parts his lips just enough for the opening of the bottle to rest on his bottom lip, and I pour all the liquid into his mouth.

I feel him backing us up until my back smashes into the side of the trailer, and it’s not until this moment that I realize I have one hand wrapped around his neck and the rest of my body pressed up against his.

“Happy now?” He crooks an eyebrow at me.

I let out a giggle.

“What’s so funny, Challis?”

“You’re cute, Merek Slatter.”

“You’re fucking wasted, Challis Jones.”

I shrug my shoulders. “This is my first rodeo since my daddy died.”

Tears fall down both cheeks this time as I hold nothing back nor have the willpower to hide the pain anymore.

“Come here.” Merek guides my head down on his shoulder and my tears flow down the crook of his neck. I feel his hand rubbing circles on my back in a soothing motion and I don’t fight any of it.

A long time passes before either of us move or even talk to each other. I allow my body to melt into his and let him hold me as I try to calm the wild stream of tears.

“Merek.” We both look up to see the blonde once again and it’s as if all my senses snap right back into place.

“Go. I’m sorry.” I push back on his chest. “I’m fine.”

Merek takes a step back from me and I feel my body sway. My feet try to find steady ground, but none ever comes and then my body is free falling to the ground. I feel Merek’s hands on me again and pulling me right back into his chest.

“Fine, uh?” He brushes a stray hair from my cheek. “I’m going to introduce you to Madison.”

“No.” But before I can put up more of a fight, the nosy bitch is standing feet away.

“Challis, this is Madison, and Madison, Challis. Madison and I were best friends growing up.”

I listen to the bullshit flying from his mouth but don’t react.

“Nice to meet you, Challis.” She runs her hands down the front of her short shorts, then turns to Merek. “I’m leaving, just wanted to tell you nice ride tonight.”

She steps up and places a peck on his cheek with me cuddled in his arms. I wipe at my eyes, making sure I just witnessed the scene that went down.

“You have a ride home? I know you’ve been drinking.”

She turns and points to a tall and lean cowboy talking to Merek’s brother.

“Fuck, you picked a roper out of all the cowboys around to take you home.”

“Yep, see ya, Merek.” She slaps him on the ass and bounces off.

Merek turns back to me and must see the obvious stunned look on my face.

“I thought…I thought…I mean, isn’t she your girlfriend?”

“No, longtime best bud and fuck buddy.”

I throw my spinning head back while I let Merek still hold me up. “Good lord, I need another drink.”

“You got it, cowgirl, but no more whiskey. Let’s just keep this drunken state up.”

“Thanks, Champ.”

“I hate it when you fucking call me that.”

“Good, I’ll keep calling you it.” I tilt my head back down and tap him on his nose.

My lips lightly brush his and he doesn’t pull back. The sweet and masculine taste lingering on them intrigues me and makes me want more. This time my lips linger on his, nuzzling from side to side, then my tongue darts out absorbing his delicious taste into my mouth.

“Kiss me, Merek.”

He doesn’t back away and talks on my lips. “Sober Challis wouldn’t like this at all.”

“Sober Challis worries too much. Please kiss me, Merek.”

Reservation fills his eyes, but then he clenches them shut and attacks my lips. My back is pressed up to the trailer again. Both of his large hands grab the sides of my face as he kisses me hard. I wiggle my way up to him and throw all of my body into him. After several seconds of his lips attacking mine, I play back and begin kissing him, not missing the moans of pleasure he releases in my mouth.

His taste is nothing I’ve experienced before and damn near addicting. My tongue laps up every ounce of it. A few hoots and hollers fill the air and I know they’re directed right at us. I remove Merek’s hat and cover our two faces with it, blocking out our little make-out session.

“I see you’ve kissed a cowboy a time or two,” he mumbles into my mouth.

“Maybe.” I shrug. “Or just watch a lot of western movies.”

“Which is it, Challis?”

“Shut up and kiss me, Champ.”

His lips are back on mine, kissing me even harder if that’s possible, as my one free hand tugs and pulls the man closer into me. Once sealed together, I trail it down the front of his shirt and search for the top of his jeans, and once I find his buckle, I flip it undone with ease.

Merek begins shaking his head side to side. “Nope, not tonight.”

“C’mon.” I nod toward the front of my trailer.

He grips both sides of my face and forces me to look up at him. “Challis, you’re going to hate me in the morning for just kissing you.”

I drop my head and mumble. “Yeah, go for the skanks anyway. I ain’t no buckle bunny.”

Merek doesn’t respond. Instead, he hoists me up and over his shoulder, slaps my ass, and begins limping. I can tell he’s in pain from the way my body sways side to side, and I feel as if I’m going to slide right off his shoulder.

“Merek, put me down now.”

He doesn’t listen to me, and when I look up I see the back of his pickup and feel him stop and slide me down his chest. He settles in on the tailgate of his truck and leaves me staring dumbfounded at him. He holds out a hand to me, but I don’t grab it and soon feel his grip on my forearm as he tugs me into his lap, twirling me around first. I settle nicely between his legs and look around to all the staring people.

I struggle a bit to get free, or at least turn and face Merek, but he keeps my hips firmly planted.

“Here, Sis. This will help.” His brother hands me a drink. “Maverik, by the way.”

“Yeah, thanks. I’ve waited on you in the bar.” I grab the drink and pound it, welcoming the burning whiskey. “Another.”

He chuckles and walks away. Looking back at Merek, I’m relieved he’s deep in conversation as my drunken state has begun to wear off a bit. Maverik hands me another solo cup and I slam it and then nurse the beer he handed me.

Merek’s telling tales of traveling up and down the road and the different buckers he’s been on. I sit and listen to him and almost feel like I’m back home with my rodeo crowd just bullshitting after a rodeo. I relax back on Merek’s solid chest, laying my head on his shoulder, gazing up at the star lit night sky.

“Too much whiskey?” he whispers in my ear.

“Yeah, I’m fucked up.” I reach up and lightly pet the scruff on his jawline. And even in my drunken state I know this has gone way too far already.

I remember his iced leg from earlier. “Hey, are you okay? What did you hurt?”

“I just tore some…”

My eyelids become heavy as his words slur together in my head, swirling around until my eyes finally shut and a welcoming darkness takes over.

Excerpt:

Chapter 1

March 16, 2003

Payson, Arizona

He thought he was dead.

Steam hissed from the crumpled front end of the RV that had folded accordion-style against the guardrail. His face stung from the punch of the airbag. His lungs burned from that awful talcum powder that drifted through the cabin as the bag deflated. The chemical dust, suspended in the air, seemed to be frozen in time.

His nose was numb and swollen. He tasted blood trickling down the back of his throat like a cocaine drip. He peered through the cracked windshield, his eyes adjusting to the reddish glow of a desert sunrise. The crushed-in hood had jarred upward. The chassis was off balance. The whole vehicle wobbled as he shifted his weight in his seat.

Oh my God.

He cranked the door handle and heaved his shoulder into it to pop it off the jamb. He hopped down onto the highway. The winds were heavy and dry, rustling the sage and scrub oaks that dotted the rugged landscape along the Beeline Highway. A sliver of fiery light barely illuminated the peaks of the Mazatal Mountains, which rose and fell against the horizon. Giant saguaros stood like sentries.

The back half of a red two-door sedan lay beneath the shredded front tires of the RV. Flattened like an aluminum can. On impact the RV must have bucked forward, rolling up onto the rear bumper of the smaller car, coming to rest on its roof. The significant weight of the RV crushed the sedan into something you might see stacked in a junkyard.

The highway was quiet. Just the rush of hot wind crackling the delicate spines of the sagebrush. He got his bearings quickly, the initial shock of the crash having passed. A sobering experience. Literally. Half a handle of Jack Daniels coursing through his veins had been replaced by something stronger.

Panic.

He saw long hair, a young female’s. How he could tell her age by the back of her head, he would never know. Maybe by its length and sheen—bright, yellow-blond. Slick with blood. Her forehead propped on the steering wheel. The driver-side window blown out. The windshield was a shattered web.

The man beside her—or boy, he was arguably young—was out cold, his body positioned in the passenger’s seat in a gimpy, off-kilter fashion. The passenger side had been thrust into the guardrail, which molded itself to the frame of the car. His head lolled against the door. Blood leaked from his ear and ran down his neck.

“Are you okay?” he screamed, although he knew he would get no reply. His voice resonated throughout the valley. “Hello?”

He braced himself against the ruined front end of the RV. He felt a surge of bile and whiskey come up in the back of his throat. He heaved forward but held it in. He was lightheaded.

Oh God, please let this be a dream. Oh God, please…this can’t be happening, this can’t be happening. This isn’t happening. This isn’t happening…

LAST HOPE [908935]

Blurb

Mendoza: I grew up in the slums and lost everything I loved to poverty, illness, and death. I had only one skill to leverage myself out of my circumstances—violence. Being hired out as a mercenary hitman brought me money and built an empire. But all that I’ve fought for is in jeopardy. My next job: Steal secret information that could bring down world governments. Find my target. Destroy it. But then, I meet her.

Ava: Karma hates me. When my best friend Rose is kidnapped, I have no choice but to take a job as a mule for a pair of criminals intent on selling top-secret information to the highest bidder. I should have known that bad luck tends to cling, because the plane I’m on goes down. That I survived a crash-landing was a miracle. And so was being rescued by Rafe Mendoza—hot, sexy, dangerous. The thing is, he wants the information that I need to free Rose. I can’t let him have it, but I need his help. And I need to fight this crazy attraction for this mercenary with hungry eyes. Rose is depending on me, and I won’t let her down, no matter how appealing Rafe is.

REVIEW

This is probably the most difficult review that I have to write. Not because I can’t find the words or I am still reeling from the book. But because I absolutely love Jen Frederick and any books she writes but also this series has been a favorite of mine. Til this book. UGH

I really loved the plot. The beginning and ending of this book was so great. It was the middle part and Ava that just didn’t do it for me.

Ava seemed so strong and determined at the very beginning to rescue her friend. She had her wits about her and understood what truly the possible outcome was – she wasn’t being naïve about anything. And she held her own throughout the book. But when it came to Rafe and her, I just couldn’t connect there.

Rafe and his men had been watching her for some time and she stirred something in Rafe that was foreign to him. But he knew what there mission was and couldn’t get distracted. He’s a mercenary – hired for a job and kill whomever necessary to complete the task.

I totally understand Rafe’s reaction to Ava – he’s been watching her for a bit of time and his feelings have been there for quite some time. Ava only just met him and her feelings are exactly the same for him?? HUH?? No – just no. I can’t fathom that, I honestly and truly can’t, even for a book. I get that some things will be slightly unreal bit a few days, sorry I can’t see it. And then she’s more worried about other “issues” than saving her friend, completely contradicts who she was in the beginning of the book. Yes, Ava has inner dialogue with herself about Stockholm syndrome, etc but that still doesn’t make it any better (for me).

The last 30-33% was really good and kept me intrigued to see what would happen and where things would end up. Rafe acted the way I expected him to. It was real and honest – he’s a mercenary. I really enjoyed the action an suspense in this book. That’s what kept me glued to it.

Overall – the plot and suspense was really good. The sex scenes were good and in-tune with these characters (read the book and you’ll understand what I mean). However the whole romance part just seemed to rush and too unrealistic for me. Those parts deflated the book and caused it get a lower rating from me.

Jen and Jessica are phenomenal authors. Outside of the romance issue for me, everything flowed well.

But I am looking forward to reading more from them both.

LAST HOPE EXCERPT

The ricochet of the bullet has swollen my eye shut. I might be slightly concussed from the free fall from six thousand feet into the jungle. I’ve no clue where we are and we have no supplies, but I’ve never been happier than when Ava stuck her tits into my face. Those babies felt like the softest pillows ever created and I would’ve been happy to suffocate in damp valley of cleavage. Maybe I’d even get the chance to lick her sweat away.

I might have groaned and pretended my injury was worse to lengthen the moment. Her delicate hands smoothed over my forehead and, it may have been my imagination, but it seemed liked she might’ve lingered over my hair. Dig in, I want to grunt.

“What the heck is that sound?” Ava clutches me to her.

If I don’t answer, does that mean I can stay in this position forever? Because I want to. Actually, no, I’d like to move over and suck one fat tit into my mouth until it’s hard as a diamond. Then I’d like to slide down until my mouth is level with her pussy and see how salty sweet she tastes between her legs. The beast between my legs roars to life and it’s a good thing that the monkeys above us scream again, causing her to jump and strike my good eye with her elbow. The pain serves as a reminder of where we are, who I am, and what the fuck I should be paying attention to.

“It’s the howler monkey. They sound like humans screaming or sometimes like the jaguar. They’re kind of dumb and if we found Afonso’s gun, we’d be able to kill one and have meat every night for a week.”

She shudders. “I don’t want to eat monkey.”

The jungle is hot and wet during the day and cold at night. If the mosquitos don’t eat you alive, the jaguars and anacondas might. Not very many people can crash-land into the middle of the Amazon and make it out alive, but I’m upping our odds from around 20 percent to 50 percent based on Ava’s positive attitude. Unless my eye heals up, I’m not giving us more than that. If we could find the Boy Scout bag, though, we could bring our odds up significantly.

“There’s plenty of food in the Amazon from plantains to fish, so if you don’t like monkey, we won’t eat it.”

She shudders again. “Thank you.”

“You a vegetarian?”

No, that couldn’t be right. Didn’t she eat some prosciutto at the café? But I want to hear it from her. I want to know everything about her.

“No, but for some reason eating something that screams like a human freaks me out.”

“Monkey is off the menu,” I say, making no attempt to move away from her rack. “I have a knife in my belt.”

“Do you have anything else besides the knife?” she asks. Her tone is accusatory like I’m holding out on her.

“No,” I say slowly. “Just the knife.”

She narrows her eyes and then reaches out with her good hand and pokes my waistline. “What about that?”

“My pants? I don’t think that they’d fit you or they’d be a good weapon. Besides, I’d rather my legs didn’t get eaten by mosquitos.”

“Look, if you just plan on leaving me behind, then do it now. Don’t string me along.”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about.” Just my luck to perv on a crazy woman.

“That!” she spits out, and this time her finger jabs lower, right into the meat of my dick. I flinch back. “I can tell you’re packing something. What’s that thing in your pocket?”

“None of your fucking business,” I growl out, my happy feeling sucked away. I can feel the heat rising in my face that has nothing to do with the humidity. I will my erection to subside but as she stares at it, it does nothing but grow.

“Oh my god. Is that a . . . that’s not a gun, is it?” Her lips part in shock.

“No.” The erection isn’t going to go down anytime soon. Not with her eyes wide with wonder. She raises her gaze to me and then drops back down again, and hell if she doesn’t lick her fucking lips. I turn away, unzip, and then pull the shaft straight up behind the waistband of my cargo pants. I fasten the zipper, carefully, and then pull my T-shirt down over the top. It hides most of the problem. “Let’s go.”

“I’m sorry,” she mumbles.

I surge to my feet, catching her off guard. She stumbles back and thankfully stops staring at my junk. “Enough,” I growl more roughly than I intend. “We have important things to concentrate on, like where are we going to sleep for the night.”

She looks stricken and nods in agreement. “Sorry, I just was taken by surprise. You don’t have to tell me what’s in your pocket if you don’t want to. But I need to remind you that we’re in this together.”

I feel like an ass. I don’t know whether to laugh or cry that she thinks my dick is fake. That’s a new one.

Jill Myles has been an incurable romantic since childhood. She reads all the ‘naughty parts’ of books first, looks for a dirty joke in just about everything, and thinks to this day that the Little House on the Prairie books should have been steamier.

After devouring hundreds of paperback romances, mythology books, and archaeological tomes, she decided to write a few books of her own – stories with a wild adventure, sharp banter, and lots of super-sexy situations. I was his lucky Penny. He was my light in the dark, hope in despair. Our bond was one of survival, friendship… first love. But then we were ripped apart and Blake Weston became the memory I turned to when everything else in my life fell apart.

Seven years later, a summer working at Camp Chance is supposed to be my fresh start. Beautiful scenery and the chance to better the lives of foster children–kids like me. But when my eyes land on him across the fire, time stands still and feelings come rushing back to the surface. I thought I’d moved on, tucked him away in my heart. One look into his soulful blue eyes and I know I’m wrong. Blake Weston can heal the broken parts of me. Restore my hope. Love me.

It’s our second chance. A sign we are supposed to be together.

Isn’t it?

I was twelve when I survived the accident that killed my parents. Fourteen when I survived the devil. And sixteen, when I survived a heartbreak of the worst kind.

But in my twenty-three years, Blake Weston might just be the first thing I won’t survive.

Excerpt

“You look like you’ve seen a ghost, Penny?” Marissa nudged me again, only this time when I turned to face her she was wearing a look of confusion, while I was trying to fight back the panic rising in me.

“I, I’m not sure. The tall one, he looked familiar.”

“You mean Blake?”

Blake?

My heart beat in double time.

Then crashed.

And for a moment I was certain it stopped beating.

Everything stopped.

I couldn’t breathe.

I couldn’t swallow.

I couldn’t get out the words almost choking me.

“Penny?”

My eyes snapped up at the sound of Marissa’s voice, and something caught my attention. Through the flames I saw the two guys talking. The one I thought I recognized was listening to the other guy, but he wasn’t looking at his friend. His blue eyes were set firmly on me.

Eyes I’d spent days and nights dreaming of.

Eyes that had kept the nightmares at bay.

Eyes I thought I’d never see again.

“Penny, you’re freaking me out a little over here.”

Marissa’s voice deflected off my impending meltdown. I came to Camp Chance to heal. Not to have every scar I’d ever been inflicted with ripped open again and laid bare.

But my past and present had just collided.

I never thought I’d see Blake Weston again, but he was sitting across the fire from me.

A ghost from my past.

Looking right at me.
