The Consequence of Rejection by Rachel Van Dyken
Publication Date: March 26th, 2018
Genre: Contemporary Romance
CORejection_eBook_LowRes

You know the universe is trying to tell you something when you get struck by lightning, but only after getting hit on by the elderly, almost getting run over by a semi, and running into the one who got away.
Why do they say it like that anyway?
Like I accidentally lost her when she was the one that got in the car with my best friend and left me.
The day after I proposed.
We were eighteen.
I wanted forever.
She didn’t.
It’s been ten years.
I tried to move on, tried to get married, had that same wedding crashed by my now best friend who says the only way for me to stop pissing off the universe, is to gain closure with the one woman I can’t forget.
So I do it.
I embark on a journey down memory lane that not only lands me in prison but on the receiving end of a fist fight in front of the entire town, this naturally happens after drunken pool sex, climbing the same girl’s window, and getting threatened at gunpoint by her father.
To say the universe is trying to tell me something anything, is a giant understatement.
I just hope I survive the message.
And then, I hope I survive her—again.

I am really not sure there isn’t a genre out there that Rachel can’t write. I may have only read two of these books so far, but I love this series so much. It is hilarious!!

The Consequence of Rejection is Jason Caro and Maddy Summers’ story. Maddy walked away from Jason 10 years ago right after he proposed and never looked back. Jason has been trying to mend his broken heart ever since – was even engaged at one point. But has never been the same since high school when Maddy crushed his dreams and took his heart with her.

So you would think would be a sappy love story but let me tell you it is anything but that! Rachel made me love these characters. Jason has the had the worse luck lately and things don’t get any better when Maddy quietly returns to town. However, Jason’s friends are fed up with his hum drum attitude and want to try and change his luck now that Maddy has returned.

I won’t give you any details of what the boys have up theirs sleeves (really just Max), but you are in for some great belly laughs with this one. When the girls are whisked away for a spa weekend, Max recruits Reid and Colt to assist him in his idiotic, yet at times genius plan, to help Jason get over Maddy so he can move. Let’s just say that things are about to get really fun and enjoyable!

Rachel laid out a great story with some amazing characters. Not only do I love the main characters, but the secondary character are just as amazing and great. They all play an integral role in this one and just makes everything all come together. And Rachel really has me wanting to go back and read Max’s book now.

Another awesome story to add to this series. Great series with amazing characters. Each story will have you laughing so hard and wanting to know each of the other characters’ stories.

“Mixing humor, nostalgia, a dose of regret, plus just enough drama to keep things interesting, Neggers’ eighth Swift River Valley novel is a potent friends to lovers story.” ~RT Book Reviews

Excerpt:

Felicity didn’t charge off to find Gabe. She needed to get her bearings first. It wasn’t just Nadia Ainsworth and whatever was going on with her—and between her and Gabe— but being around him, his energy and drive. She didn’t want to get sucked in and lose herself, or at least her focus. She had a high-profile event coming up in her hometown. She was working. She had a job to do…  She spotted Christopher Sloan walking toward the popular restaurant from Main Street. He was the youngest of the five Sloan brothers, a firefighter in town…

Gabe had always been tight with the Sloans. Really, why couldn’t Gabe have stayed with one of them? Christopher was on his own and lived in the village. Surely, he had space.

Of course, a Sloan hadn’t bought the old Flanagan place.

Gabe would be gone in a few days, and if his stay helped him get over any emotions about the property being out of Flanagan hands, that wasn’t a bad thing.

Felicity noticed her Rover was getting warm. She turned on the engine and rolled down the windows just as Evelyn Sloan walked up the street from her house. She was in her eighties, using a cane these days but otherwise in good shape. She was the widowed grandmother of the six Sloan siblings, still living on her own. She paused at Felicity’s old Land Rover. “I thought that was you. How are you, Felicity?”

“Doing well, Mrs. Sloan, thanks.”

“You can call me Evelyn. I don’t mind. I understand your parents are traveling a lot these days. Good for them. Go while you can.”

Felicity smiled. “They’re enjoying retirement.”

“They’ve earned it.” She leaned in closer, as if she had a secret to share. “I heard Gabe Flanagan is staying at your house on the river. Are you two back together?”

“We’ve always just been friends.” And for a while, not even that.

Evelyn frowned. “Just friends? Okay.” She straightened, adjusting her cane. “Have a nice afternoon. I don’t care for this hot weather, but it does feel nice on my old bones today. Back in the day I’d be tempted to take a dip in the river myself. Gabe stopped at the farm for a rope. I understand he plans to go out to your swimming hole on the river. You kids used to have a blast out there. It’s a lovely spot. Still, it’s never a good idea to swim alone.”

The “farm” wasn’t a working farm these days, its old barn instead the offices for Sloan & Sons, a respected, busy construction company in town owned and run by Evelyn’s son and his wife and grandchildren. Gabe had worked for them through high school and until he dropped out of college.

Felicity started to say something about swimming holes, but Evelyn was already on her way up the street. “A rope,” she said, rolling up her window. “Leave it to Gabe.”

Felicity and Gabe’s story is simply sweet. The River House is an old school romance novel that will melt the hearts of those that have been reading romance for a long time. Neggers takes the “good” in romance writing and places it right into this book. The River House is not raunchy or all about hot sex but it is about love. It is a love story that will wrap you up and cuddle you like a good old blanket. It is truly sweet and romantic. It is a slow paced book and not rushed for all those who like to take their time reading. A great book to recommend to friends and family.

Risen by Cole Gibsen…Release Day Blitz & Review

Blurb

Fans of Vampire Diaries and Twilight will be thirsting for this latest vampire addiction…

My aunt has been kidnapped by vampires, and it’s up to me to save her. Only…I had no idea vampires existed. None. Nada. I’m more of a reader than a fighter, and even though I’d been wishing to escape my boring existence in the middle of nowhere, I’d give anything to have it back now if it meant my aunt was safe.

Then there’s the vampire Sebastian, who seems slightly nicer than most of the bloodsuckers I’ve run into so far. Yes, he’s the hottest being I’ve ever come across, but there’s no way I can trust him. He swears he’s helping me get answers, but there’s more to his story. Now I’m a key pawn in a raging vampire war, and I need to pick the right ally.

But my chances of surviving this war are slim at best, when the side I choose might be the one that wants me dead the most.

So this book took me by surprise. The blurb had me intrigued enough to take a chance on this author (she is new to me) and since I have love of paranormal reads, figured it would at least be something I enjoyed. I did not expect to really get so wrapped up in the story.

There are so many vampire books out there, that it is truly hard to find out that stands out from the rest. Cole has definitely done in her job in making this story unique and different from other stories I have read.

Charlie has had this inkling of wanting to escape her aunt’s little cabin for quite some time. They never venture much outside the woods and as a teenager dangling on the edge of adulthood, Charlie’s anxiety of seeing what else is an itch that needs scratched desperately. And Charlie does get her wish, just not in the way she expected.

“The veil that’s hidden a strange, darker world from what I know has only been pulled back a fraction. I’m not sure I’m ready for more.”

Charlie is taken on a journey she never intended to embark on. Sebastian, a vampire who is her captor, is also her only hope of finding her aunt and rescuing her. Sebastian has many questions and knows that Charlie is a key part of finding those answers.

We are thrown into a world where vampires have different species and have been battling for ages. A war is impending amongst them and as Charlie learns of these different species, she is grasping with her new knowledge and what this means for her. The readers are given a lot of interesting and entertaining facts, but we are left with more questions than we started with and an intense need to know what happens next.

Cole has definitely set up an intriguing world with great characters. The plot development is engaging and just when you think you know everything, she throws in another twist that has you second guessing everything you just thought. I love it!

I cannot wait for the next book to arrive to see what it is in store next for Charlie, Sebastian and Opal. Great start to what I feel will be a very enthralling series.

Excerpt from Risen:

“Don’t say it like that, Charlie. I wanted to protect you.” She tugs on the edge of my cardigan, pulling me toward her. “I love you. You’re the most important thing in my life, do you understand?”

There’s a desperation in her eyes that tightens my throat. Swallowing hard, I nod.

She lets go of me with a sigh. “Maybe I took it too far.” She sweeps her dreadlocks over her shoulder and twists them tightly. “All I’ve ever wanted was to keep you safe.”

Safe. The world spirals, cold and slippery, down my spine. “What are you so afraid of?”
She opens her mouth only to shut it again.
Jax growls.
We turn as he claws at the door.
“The only thing there is to be afraid of,” she whispers. “The monsters.”

Julie does it again with another hot, sexy and quick romantic read. In Your Eyes is book six in this series and is Parker an Megan’s story. I was bit bitter when I first started this one because I really wanted Megan with Griffin and had a sore taste in my mouth in starting this one. But Julie won me over with Parker and his devotion to Megan.

Parker and Megan are acquaintances from back in LA and it’s by sheer coincidence that they both move to Austin and are sort of starting over in each of their careers. Megan has been laying low after running from and ex and Parker is just looking to fix his reputation and build a great business.

In Your Eyes is fast paced romance that will sweep off your feet and have you loving both Parker and Megan. They are both attracted to one another and were back in LA, it was just bad timing. And now that nothing stands in Parker’s way, he wants to show Megan that he wants more from her than his previous elusive playboy style.

I am loving these quick reads from Julie (some more than others) and as much as I didn’t not like that Parker and Griff aren’t together, I really enjoyed this one. And now we wait for Derek and Amanda’s book next!!

Tempting Little Tease by Kendall Ryan…Blog Tour & Review

A hot new standalone romance from New York Times bestseller, Kendall Ryan.

She’s the tutor I hired to teach me Italian.

She’s way too young for me, but she’s also gorgeous, bright and filled with a curiosity about life that I find incredibly refreshing.

It’s fucking adorable.

I’m old enough to know better, but this pretty young thing tempts me beyond belief. And for the first time in my life, I can see myself falling.

***
Is this what it’s like to be pursued by an older man? The complete confidence, the lack of expectations, the sincerity?

My God, it’s exhilarating.

Quinn Kingsley is totally unexpected. I’m moving to Italy in three weeks to teach English, and while I never expected something so real to develop between us so quickly, our chemistry is undeniable.

There’s something so sexy about this back and forth he and I share. Flirting with this man is like playing with fire, and I’m bound to get burned.

Io sono attratto da te. I’m attracted to you, he tells me.

But is our attraction enough to get us through the complications of a massive age gap and an international love affair?

Only one way to find out…

AVAILABLE NOW

Amazon | iBooks | Nook | Kobo

Tempting Little Tease was a great ending the trio of Kingsley’s brother stories, but not the end of this series. Oh no, no, no. Kendall threw us a little surprise in this book which will continue the Forbidden Desires series. YAY!!

I had been looking forward to Quinn’s book since this series started. He is the eldest of the Kingsley brothers and the one that seems to have his shit together. He’s never been one for relationships and he is quite ok with that. There isn’t anything in his past that has given a bad outlook, it’s just something that was never a big deal to him.

Quinn meets Alessandra, when his tutor has some medical problems that lands him in the hospital. Alessandra is getting ready to leave for Italy in 3 weeks, but until that time comes, she has been fulfilling her duties as a full time nanny and an Italian tutor. Alessandra becomes Quinn’s tutor and they both quickly become infatuated with each other, regardless of their age difference.

Alessandra makes it known that she has only has a few weeks left in America before she moves to Italy as part of her life-long dream to be an American tutor there. Quinn has never been one for relationships and sees this as a great opportunity to woo her during the time they have left. Except neither anticipates her departure to be so difficult when it comes.

As most of you know, I am not one for insta-love romances. They are very hard sell for me but I love how Kendall spins this one. For me personally, I think what started as lust transformed to love for these as they got to know each other. I love that Quinn didn’t occupy Alessandra’s time while still in America and gave her the freedom to be herself. I love that Alessandra didn’t make her last few weeks all about Quinn and stayed the girl she was before meeting him. Too many times in stories, do I see where the heroine forgets about everyone else in her life and just clings to the man as though she needs his air to breathe. Quinn and Alessandra compliment each other well in this relationship and I really enjoyed that aspect a lot.

Kendall has one again written another beautiful and sweet romance that readers will cobble up quickly and love.

Escort by Skye Warren…Blog Tour & Review

ESCORT_BLOGTOUR

“Hypnotically romantic…this book reads like a sensual dream and I didn’t want to wake up.” – Tessa Bailey, New York Times bestselling author

Escort, a sexy new contemporary romance standalone from New York Times bestselling author Skye Warren is now LIVE!

Escort.jpg

There is no shame in pleasure. And no love in business.

I have a blind date tonight, and I know with 100% certainty that I’m getting lucky. There shouldn’t be any surprises, not for one as jaded as me, but when I walk into the penthouse suite of L’Etoile, everything changes.

1) For one thing, Bea is heartstoppingly gorgeous. Pale green eyes and endless freckles. Curves I want to spend all night exploring, as if her body was made for me.

2) Her innocence makes me want to use my entire inventory of bedroom tricks on her and then invent a few more.

3) Except that . . . she’s a virgin.

I can initiate her into the world of desire without letting her get attached, can’t I? A few hours of tutoring, and at the end of the night a small fortune will be deposited into my bank account.

Yes, you read that right. There are many words for what I do. After all, mine is the oldest profession. I’m an escort, which means this date is nothing more than a mutually enjoyable transaction.

But once I realize one night with her won’t be enough, I’m the one who’s screwed.

Escort is the first book I have actually read by Skye Warren. Yes, yes I know – I am an idiot for not reading any of her books sooner. I have just about every book of hers on my TBR, I have just never had the time to read any. And wow, I actually hate myself for not making the time to read any of her works sooner.

This book was amazing to me. There was no deep-rooted plot or an in-depth look into these characters. If anything, there is very little digging real low beneath the surface of Bea and Hugo yet they were so captivating to me. They both have a past that plays into this and their story and their interactions were exquisite and enticing. I could not walk away from this book, even if I tried.

Once again, this book proves that a true writer will win you over with their words, regardless of how deep the plot goes. I became so entangled in their story, regardless of how brief and quick it was, that I needed to know how everything turned out. I was so enamored by Hugo and Bea and their lives. And that tiny little twist that Skye adds in just makes this book all the more entertaining.

This book was perfect for me. I devoured it in no time and it left me, elated, aroused and feeling amazing. Yea – words really can do that. If you are like me and have never read one of her books, I highly urge you to read this one. And if you are already a die hard fan of hers, I have no doubt you will love this book too.

Excerpt

The word seems to take her aback. “Pleasure?”

“That’s the nature of my business, yes.” My body tightens, because it would be pleasure indeed to touch this woman. To kiss her. To make her moan for me.

Although I might have to rethink that plan, because the word pleasure might as well have been medieval torture based on the way Bea looks at me. “I thought we were going to have sex.”

She sounds so forlorn it could break my heart.

Instead I laugh, a small huff of breath, because I can’t afford to have a heart.

“Sex,” I say, standing to full height, circling the scuffed oriental coffee table, standing behind her chair. “And pleasure. Pleasure and sex. They’re interchangeable.”

I brush my knuckles over the side of her neck, a demonstration. Her wild curls tickle my skin.

It’s provocative, this. If she had agreed to dinner I would have started with small touches, a glance of my palm against the small of her back as I pulled out her chair, holding her hand while we talked over a glass of wine. Perhaps being so bold as to run a finger along the inside of hers, where it’s more sensitive. She would shiver; her gaze would meet mine.

There’s an order to these things. You can move fast or slow, but there’s still an order.

“We can skip the pleasure part,” she says, her voice high, her breathing faster. Her chest rises and falls in the black dress, made all the more alluring by how much it covers. She’s a mystery. The black sky in the city. I have to work to see her secrets.

“No,” I chide gently. “We focus on the pleasure. That’s the point.”

“What if—” Her breath catches as I drop the back of my hand over her collarbone, a reverse caress. That’s what one does for a skittish creature like her. “What if I have a different point?”

“And what point would that be, my sweet Bea?”

“I want to lose my virginity,” she says, so fast it comes out as a single word.

IWANTTOLOSEMYVIRGINITY. It takes my lust-warmed brain a full minute to comprehend. She’s not only nervous, this woman. She’s a virgin.

My hand freezes. I yank it away. “Pardon me?”

I can’t have heard her correctly. There is no chance in hell that this beautiful young woman, as strange and interesting as she is, is a virgin. No chance in hell that I was the one tasked to be her first. I could not possibly spread her legs and thrust inside her, knowing that no one’s ever been there. It would be a physical impossibility. Never. No possible way.

“It doesn’t have to take long,” she says, suddenly earnest. Almost begging me. “I don’t need…you know…whatever you do for other women. I only want the sex.”

My God. “You are insane.”

A scrunch of her nose. “Well, you don’t have to sound too surprised. It is what I requested when I called. The woman said that’s what you do.”

“I’m not taking your virginity.” On some level I might have guessed this about her. If I had considered it even possible, I might have. Virgins don’t hire me. They stammer and giggle and turn away from me, their protective instincts strong enough to send them in the opposite direction. So perhaps I can be forgiven for not recognizing this one, so forthright.

Bea frowns. “Is that a different department or something?”

She’s mocking me. She’s mocking me for being, well, prudish, and I feel strangely buoyant. I could float away with the absurdity of it. “Yes, it’s a different department. The department of a frat boy who fumbles around in the dark.”

“Are you seriously not going to do it?”

The irony is enough to flatten me, that this is a woman I might have pursued outside this job. She would have been too young for me, even if I weren’t an escort and she wasn’t my client. That wouldn’t have stopped me from wanting her.

But in another incarnation, if I had been one of those fumbling frat boys, I would have followed this woman to the ends of the earth. That’s a hypothetical scenario on multiple levels, but I’m good at hypotheticals, which is another reason I’m good at my job.

So good that I please every single client I’ve ever had.

Bourbon and Bonfires is the fourth book in Andrea Country Road book (not including the novella) and I have enjoyed each and every one of these cute little romance stories. They are not your southern cowboy charm, but these southern stories are perfect for me since I am not cowboy lovin’ woman.

Anyway – Bourbon and Bonfires is Landon’s story, the one I have been patiently waiting for. Why is that the one story I really want at the beginning of the story, is the one I have to wait forever (it seems like forever). Well I was not disappointed in at all and enjoyed every bit of this sweet romance.

Addy is still struggling to move on from the destruction her ex-husband left behind when he just upped and moved on with his life, without Addy and their son. Addy isn’t pining after him in any way, but she is having a hard time with her son lately and that has her frustrated enough to finally take her brother up on his offer and move closer to him. It just so happens that Taylor, Addy’s brother is the owner the of the bar that Landon and his buddies frequent. Landon also so happens to remember Addy quite well from a recent wedding she attended.

Landon truly won me over in this book. He may come across as a playboy, but he has a heart of gold. But make no mistake, Addy does not make things easy. It’s not that she plays to hard to get, she just has a lot baggage and can’t wrap her head around why Landon would want her of all people.

Andrea doesn’t make her stories too angsty and for once, I am perfectly fine with that. Her stories work beautifully with all the easy and less dramatic flare ups. These people handle themselves like the adults they are and talk things through. I love it.

Another really enjoyable and sweet romance from Andrea.

Series: Soul Serenade #3
Author: Kaylee Ryan
Genre: New Adult
Release Date: March 20, 2018

Lauren captivated me with those big brown eyes of hers, and
I knew my life would never be the same. What started out as friendship, has
turned into so much more.
I was shocked when Tristian asked for my number. There hasn’t been a day since
that I haven’t heard from him. He may be the drummer, but that deep sexy voice,
it turns me inside out.

I assumed it would be one and done, but that’s not how our story ends.

I worry it’s not what he wants. He tells me he’s Definite.

This book gets right to the point! Kaylee Ryan always captivates me with her writing and Definite most definitely got my attention from the beginning. I love how Lauren and Tristian come into each other’s lives. The opening of the book was a perfect way to start their love story. Kaylee Ryan does not dangle this love story right in front of the readers face but just gets right too it. It is actually a nice change of pace to a romance reader because I did not see what happens to this couple coming their way.

Lauren and Tristian are so in love and reading their love story was quite enjoyable. Tristian knows what he wants and just goes and gets it. Honestly, if you want a quick read without all the drama of how a couple finally becomes a couple- Definite is a great choice. I read it as a stand-alone and could keep up with all the characters with no problem. In fact, I will read the first two just because I enjoyed this one.

Summary:

I thought I knew him. He thought he knew me. We were both wrong…

Dr. Corinne Cabot is living the American dream. She’s a successful ER physician in Chicago who’s married to a handsome husband. Together they live in a charming house in the suburbs. But appearances can be deceiving—and what no one can see is Corinne’s dark past. Troubling gaps in her memory mean she recalls little about a haunting event in her life years ago that changed everything.

She remembers only being in the house the night two people were found murdered. Her father was there, too. Now her father is in prison; she hasn’t been in contact in years. Repressing that terrifying memory has caused Corinne moments of paranoia and panic. Sometimes she thinks she sees things that aren’t there, hears words that haven’t been spoken. Or have they? She fears she may be losing her mind, unable to determine what’s real and what’s not.

So when she senses her husband’s growing distance, she thinks she’s imagining things. She writes her suspicions off to fatigue, overwork, anything to explain what she can’t accept—that her life really isn’t what it seems.

When I heard that Courtney Cole was writing a psychological thriller, I was all in. The I read the blurb, and I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this one.

Such Dark Things is a twisted thriller with a bit of romance added in. There are some situations that appear in this book that those who read Courtney Cole’s other books may not be able to handle in this book. It’s why she chose to publish this under a pen name. So please keep that in mind if you decide to read this.

This book hooked me from the start. It’s told from two POVs – Jude and Corrine’s. They are a married couple; he’s a psychologist and she’s an ER doctor. And it’s from the both the past and present with the past leading up to the present.

Seventeen years ago on Halloween, Corrine witnessed her father kill two people but she remembers nothing about that night except standing next to the two dead bodies. Her father is serving time in prison for the murders and she’s been fighting demons from that night ever since.

Corrine is very dedicated to her job and spends alot of her time there. It also helps her from focusing on her nightmares that comes around this time of year. As Corrine is struggling to get a hold of her nightmares, she feels her husband is pulling away from her. Jude knows that Halloween is a very difficult time of the year for Corrine so he always gives her extra space to work through it. But he finds himself seeking out the attention of a younger woman. She gives him the attention that he’s missing from Corrine. And once he makes that first mistake, she makes it impossible for him to stop.

Courtney throws a lot of twists and turns into this story. I really enjoyed watching how everything played out. Every single character is unique and plays a significant role. Jude’s brother Michel, Corrine’s sister Jackie and best friend Lucy are all intricate in Jude and Corrine’s life.

Such Dark Things was riveting and captivating. While I did figure out a thing or two, I was still surprised by a few shocks that Courtney threw in and had my jaw dropping. I am really hoping that Courtney continues to write in this genre because she wrote one hell of an spellbinding read.

Excerpt

Prologue-
My skin is sticky with blood.
My waistband is wet with it, and I can taste it on my lips. It’s splattered on my face, and it tastes like metal that has been rotting in the sun and rain for a hundred years. The night makes me shiver, the cool breeze rustling my hair, and for a split second, I’m back there in that house, standing in that blood. My bare toes feel the warmth of the liquid turn cool as the minutes tick past.
Goose bumps raise on my neck, and a knot that I can’t swallow is lodged in my throat. My feet are frozen frozen frozen on the ground, and I can’t move.
Their eyes are open and lifeless, although they stare at me.
They see me.
Yet they see nothing.
I can’t breathe.
My lips are ice, just like theirs.
My heart is pounding and racing and stuttering, and I can’t breathe I can’t breathe I can’t breathe.
“Corinne. You’re safe here. Corinne.”
And just like that, I’m not there.
I’m here.
“There was blood all over me.” My words are stilted and fragile, like glass.
I stare at my hand, and even though it’s clean now, I see it as it was seventeen years ago, covered in the blood of two souls…souls that were living and that aren’t anymore. It’s hard to wrap my mind around. First they were breathing, and then they weren’t. It happened in a split second. I inhale shakily.
“Think about that moment,” the doctor instructs. “Who can you see?”
I think on that. “Melanie is next to me on the floor. Her head is bleeding into a pool. There is so much blood that it looks black.” I close my eyes, because it had been the first time I’d seen blood like that, and it terrified me. “Joe is on the bed. His blood is splattered all over the wall. Both of them have their eyes open.”
Staring at me.
The emotions welling up in me are like a wave, swelling, swelling, swelling…until I can’t handle it anymore. The horror and the guilt and the pain are just too much.
“I can’t do this,” I blurt out. “I’m done for the day.”
Dr. Phillips looks at me, and he’s calm and detached.
“Corinne, why are you here?”
I pause. What a stupid question. “You know why I’m here.”
I hate it when they treat me with such condescension.
“Humor me,” he tells me. “Why are you here?”
I grit my teeth and look away.
He waits.
“You’re saying that I tried to hurt myself. But I wouldn’t do that.”
I look at him now, and he’s so fucking emotionless. I look down at my left wrist, at the bandage covering up the stiches.
“I wouldn’t,” I insist again. “I’m a fucking physician. I wouldn’t have cut my wrist horizontally. If I really wanted to hurt myself, I would’ve known to cut vertically along the vein.”
I finger the gauze. Beneath it, the cut throbs, evidence of something I don’t remember doing.
“I’m not crazy,” I add. And I don’t know if I’m trying to convince Dr. Phillips, or myself.
“You’re not crazy.” He nods. “But you’ve experienced a mental break. You’re here because you need to deal with the causal underlying issue so that it won’t happen again. Right?”
He’s a fucking asshole.
I stare at the wall. At the whiteness, at the sterility.
“You need some plants in here,” I tell him, avoiding the question. “Greenery puts patients at ease. All this blankness…it’s maddening.”
“I’ll keep that in mind,” he says wryly. “Corinne…”
I interrupt. “Dr. Cabot,” I tell him. “I’ve earned it.”
“Dr. Cabot,” he corrects himself. “You’re right. You’ve earned it. You worked a long time to finish medical school and your residency. You’re a top ER physician. You have a life envied by everyone around you. You’ve got to take care of yourself, so you can protect this life you’ve built.”
I close my eyes. Behind my eyelids, it’s dark and safe. It’s black and warm.
“Protect it from what?” I whisper.
“You tell me,” he answers. “You’ve got something inside of you that is triggered now, something that creates panic and a fight-or-flight response. We know what your father did so long ago. What we don’t know is why…or what damage it has caused in you, damage that seems to be affecting you now.”
“I don’t know either,” I say helplessly, my eyes opening to the white walls again. “I can’t remember. I never could. You know that.”
“I know.” Dr. Phillips nods again, and he tries to be so fucking comforting. “You have a history of dissociative behavior. You blocked out what your father did so long ago, and it stands to reason that your brain has developed that as a defense mechanism. It’s doing it again now. If we don’t get to the bottom of why your memories are being triggered now, after all of these years…you’ll never have peace. Do we agree on that?”
Reluctantly, I nod.
“So we have to start at the beginning. You have to stay here and focus.”
Anger flares in me, red and hot, and I stare him down. He doesn’t blink and neither do I.
“Focus?” I ask him, and my words are sharp and I wish they would cut him. “You think it’s as simple as sitting down and focusing? How dare you sit there and tell me what to do, when you have no idea what it’s like?”
I stand up to leave, but the psychiatrist’s next sentence holds me in my place, freezing me.
“Corinne, you promised Jude you’d try.”
Jude.
My beautiful, understanding Jude.
I swallow hard. I did promise. And I have to follow through, even though the pain it causes me is immeasurable. I owe it to him. I’ll do it for him. Not for this psychiatrist, but for Jude.
My body folds back into the seat, and I finger the medical bracelet circling my right wrist. Corinne Elizabeth Cabot, Female. It’s me, condensed into one stark sentence, yet I’m a stranger to myself right now. That’s why I’m here. I don’t know myself or my thoughts. My memories are foreign, blocked, nightmarish, out of control.
“Fine.” There’s nothing else I can say.
Dr. Phillips is quietly triumphant. “Let’s begin again. Take a deep breath and close your eyes.”
I do, drawing the cool air in a rush over my teeth, expanding my lungs and holding it, before I let it slowly exhale. I do it again, then again.
“Think back to that night, Dr. Cabot. Stand in that room. Tell me where your father is.”
I envision it, I see it in my mind like it was yesterday. My father in his bloody steel-toed boots. “He’s on the porch, waiting for the police to come.”
“He left you alone in the house with two dead bodies?”
“Yes.”
“He didn’t try to run?”
“No.”
“Okay. What did you do then?” my doctor asks me calmly, unfazed by the ugliness of my story.
“I was stunned. I think I was in shock. My hand was bleeding.”
Dr. Phillips looks at my hand, because I’m stroking the scar now, an unconscious nervous tic that I often do when I’m anxious. “What happened to your hand?”
“I don’t remember.”
“Is there a lot that you don’t remember from that night?”
“Yes. You know that.”
“Yes, I do,” he acknowledges. “So you’re standing in the middle of a bloody crime scene because your father left you alone. What did you do then, Corinne?”
“I looked out the window,” I tell him. “I was frozen. I couldn’t move. My feet felt like concrete and I was afraid if I moved, my heart would explode. So I took deep breaths. I watched the trick-or-treaters walking by. I looked at the blood on my shoe. I looked at the jack-o’-lanterns that were lit on porches, and the ghosts hanging in the trees. There was a full moon. There was light on my shoulders.”
“Anything else?”
“I stared at the street sign on the corner. All Hallows Lane.”
“That’s ironic,” the doctor points out needlessly.
“Yes.”
“How long did you stand there?” His question is quiet.
“Until they came and took me away.”

TEASERSUNSHINE

Portrait of a beautiful blonde girl lying on a white bed

Excerpt

The door to his office opened before he finished unloading the bags. It was Stone. Oh joy. Perfect way to ruin lunch.

“You eating in here?” he asked. Again, he was dressed like he was going to a frat party, not to work with Jasper.

“Yes, and there isn’t enough for three. I thought you had a business lunch.”

He shrugged. “It’s over. Not hungry,” he paused and glanced briefly at me. “Just didn’t expect you to be eating in here.” He left out the “with her”, but it was understood in the tone of his voice.

“Better company in here,” Jasper told him, and at that moment, I wanted to kiss Jasper’s face. He had no problem with me. He didn’t think I was below him. Sure, I worked for him but he accepted me as a human. Unlike Stone.

“I’ve got the contract I picked up at lunch today if you want to go over it while you eat.”

I didn’t look at either of them. I kept my eyes focused on the food Jasper was placing in front of me. I felt like I was in the way, like most of the time Stone was around. He managed to make me feel awkward and unwanted.

“I’m going to enjoy my lunch date, and then I’ll look it over. Leave it on the desk.”

Again, the urge to kiss Jasper emerged.

“Date?” Stone asked, his voice sounding displeased as if the word “date” was crude or distasteful.

“Yes, Stone. Date.”

“She’s your employee,” Stone told him as if he’d somehow forgotten.

“Jesus, you can be an ass,” Jasper said with a chuckle. “Can you leave us to our lunch if all you’re going to do is be a dick?”

I am going to put it out there that yes, Sweet Little Thing, reminds me of Abbi Gline’s Fallen Too Far book. However, it is not a negative for me. Fallen Too Far is one of those books you pick up and read in a day, fall in love with the characters, and want more of them instantly. Think of it this way- You know when you get a book and every page is turned faster and faster so you can see what happens? Sweet Little Thing is like this for me. When I got to the end, I seriously was mad I finished it so fast because there is a huge cliff hanger which means now I have to wait for book two. This is going to be such a long wait.

Beulah and Jasper are endearing together. Beulah is an amazingly sweet character that is strong as well. She has been dealt some pretty shabby cards in life. Jasper entering into her life not only makes her world turn upside down but he makes it better. Jasper, I did not even like in the beginning but at the same moment Beulah fell in love with him, I am pretty sure I did as well.

As far as this being similar to Abbi Glines Fallen Too Far series, yes it seems to have a touch of the same elements. However, it is NOT the same story. I know that when I love a series, and I mean really love it, I read it over and over. I even read the male characters POV if one comes out. I sure as heck would read a series that was similar because it touched my heart. As a reader, I beg for authors to write more books like the ones I loved of theirs. Abbi Glines gave me more of what I love about her writing. Sweet Little Thing gives the reader the drama, passion, and undying love between

What He Doesn’t Know by Kandi Steiner
Publication Date: March 15th, 2018
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Photographer: Perrywinkle Photography, Lauren Perry
Cover Designer: Kandi Steiner

WHDK cover FINAL_1

On the northeast side of town, there is a house.

The house was once magical, filled with love and joy and plans for the future.

Inside its walls are many things that belong to me — my books, the china from my mother on my wedding day, the beautiful cage once home to two birds, now empty, just like me.

And a man.

A man who also belongs to me.

A man I no longer wish to keep.

A man who, no doubt, has not slept, though the sun is rising. Because the house where he waits is where I laid my head to rest every night for eight years. Until last night.

No one who knows me would believe Charlie Pierce, the quiet, bookish girl who never made waves is pulling out of the driveway of a man who isn’t her husband.

But they don’t know me at all.

I don’t even know me.

Not anymore.

They say there are two sides to every story, and I suppose in most cases, that’s true. But the one I live inside of? It has three.

On the northeast side of town, there is a house.

But there is no longer a home.

They say there are two sides to every story, and I suppose in most cases, that’s true. But the one I lived inside of? It had three.

I am on of the few who believe there is never two sides to a story – most would consider me cynical in my thinking and that is quite alright with me. Because there is never two sides to a story – there is side A, side B and the truth. And in this book, this story has ALOT of sides and each one is the truth, just depends on which character is telling you the story.

For those of you who are not fans of love triangles and cheating, this book will be difficult for you to read. If there is no way for you to understand why someone would cheat, do not read this book. For the rest of us, this book will be a great read to us.

Kandi does a great job with this book and the story of these characters. Everything plays out perfectly and the flow of everything is so smooth and natural. Nothing is rushed and you get to relish in the minute details of the story. This book is told mostly from Reece and Charlie’s POVs, as the story surrounds them and their past and how that leads to decisions they both make in the present.

I won’t go into details about what happens as the reader needs to experience everything firsthand. I will tell you that Charlie is kindergarten teacher who has been married to Cameron for 8 years. Cameron works for the same company that Charlie’s father started. Reese is Charlie’s brother’s best friend from high school and close to Charlie’s family. Reese is moving back into town for a teaching position as the same school Charlie teaches at.

I like Charlie – she may be quiet and reserved but she’s always been that way. She’s not exactly naïve, but she definitely doesn’t get out a lot. I love that she battles with herself – with her feelings, with her decisions, with her relationship not only with her husband, but with Reece. I love that she never gives up.

Reese – I have a lot of mixed feelings on him. He’s respectful of Charlie and her marriage. He wants to be her friend, if nothing else. But when she is at her weakest, he uses that to his advantage and doesn’t care at that moment that she is married. And that does not sit well with me. I know that he is fighting for what he wants, but damn that just irks me.

Cameron – I don’t like him one bit. Nope, you can’t change my mind either. I don’t give a shit how hard he tries to win her back – too little, too late. I get that he has his own demons from his past, but dude needs to realize he fucked up 5 years ago and that’s what broke everything.

“I love him Reese,” I whispered, the words cutting me like a dull razor blade as they left my lips. I knew they penetrated him just the same.
“Doesn’t change the fact that you love me, too.”

While I enjoyed the plot and angst given, just didn’t care for the two men. However, it’s not because I couldn’t relate to them, but because their actions annoyed me. How do I explain this – there are times when I don’t care for characters because the author just wrote shite characters (can’t relate to them, they bring nothing to the story). In this case, Kandi wrote characters that you are either going to love or hate because of how well she wrote them and the role they play in the story. And in this case, I want to tear their balls off and shove them down their throats For me, that’s what makes a book great – I feel strongly about a character, good or bad.

Overall, this book was great. Was it outstanding for me, no. I did not get that whole “holy shit, this book is a MUST READ” feeling. Mostly because I didn’t feel 100% vested in the characters; my heart wasn’t vested in the story as much as I have been in others. And that’s ok – others will feel more than I did. I do want to know how this story ends and where these characters end up. I just somehow missed the whole emotional roller coaster on this one.

Kandi Steiner is a Creative Writing and Advertising/Public Relations graduate from the University of Central Florida living in Tampa. Kandi works full time as a social media specialist, but also works part time as a Zumba fitness instructor and blackjack dealer.

Kandi started writing back in the 4th grade after reading the first Harry Potter installment. In 6th grade, she wrote and edited her own newspaper and distributed to her classmates. Eventually, the principal caught on and the newspaper was quickly halted, though Kandi tried fighting for her “freedom of press.” She took particular interest in writing romance after college, as she has always been a die hard hopeless romantic (like most girls brought up on Disney movies).

When Kandi isn’t working or writing, you can find her reading books of all kinds, talking with her extremely vocal cat, and spending time with her friends and family. She enjoys beach days, movie marathons, live music, craft beer and sweet wine – not necessarily in that order.
