Bourbon and Bonfires is the fourth book in Andrea Country Road book (not including the novella) and I have enjoyed each and every one of these cute little romance stories. They are not your southern cowboy charm, but these southern stories are perfect for me since I am not cowboy lovin’ woman.

Anyway – Bourbon and Bonfires is Landon’s story, the one I have been patiently waiting for. Why is that the one story I really want at the beginning of the story, is the one I have to wait forever (it seems like forever). Well I was not disappointed in at all and enjoyed every bit of this sweet romance.

Addy is still struggling to move on from the destruction her ex-husband left behind when he just upped and moved on with his life, without Addy and their son. Addy isn’t pining after him in any way, but she is having a hard time with her son lately and that has her frustrated enough to finally take her brother up on his offer and move closer to him. It just so happens that Taylor, Addy’s brother is the owner the of the bar that Landon and his buddies frequent. Landon also so happens to remember Addy quite well from a recent wedding she attended.

Landon truly won me over in this book. He may come across as a playboy, but he has a heart of gold. But make no mistake, Addy does not make things easy. It’s not that she plays to hard to get, she just has a lot baggage and can’t wrap her head around why Landon would want her of all people.

Andrea doesn’t make her stories too angsty and for once, I am perfectly fine with that. Her stories work beautifully with all the easy and less dramatic flare ups. These people handle themselves like the adults they are and talk things through. I love it.

Another really enjoyable and sweet romance from Andrea.

Lauren captivated me with those big brown eyes of hers, and
I knew my life would never be the same. What started out as friendship, has
turned into so much more.
I was shocked when Tristian asked for my number. There hasn’t been a day since
that I haven’t heard from him. He may be the drummer, but that deep sexy voice,
it turns me inside out.

I assumed it would be one and done, but that’s not how our story ends.

I worry it’s not what he wants. He tells me he’s Definite.

This book gets right to the point! Kaylee Ryan always captivates me with her writing and Definite most definitely got my attention from the beginning. I love how Lauren and Tristian come into each other’s lives. The opening of the book was a perfect way to start their love story. Kaylee Ryan does not dangle this love story right in front of the readers face but just gets right too it. It is actually a nice change of pace to a romance reader because I did not see what happens to this couple coming their way.

Lauren and Tristian are so in love and reading their love story was quite enjoyable. Tristian knows what he wants and just goes and gets it. Honestly, if you want a quick read without all the drama of how a couple finally becomes a couple- Definite is a great choice. I read it as a stand-alone and could keep up with all the characters with no problem. In fact, I will read the first two just because I enjoyed this one.

Summary:

I thought I knew him. He thought he knew me. We were both wrong…

Dr. Corinne Cabot is living the American dream. She’s a successful ER physician in Chicago who’s married to a handsome husband. Together they live in a charming house in the suburbs. But appearances can be deceiving—and what no one can see is Corinne’s dark past. Troubling gaps in her memory mean she recalls little about a haunting event in her life years ago that changed everything.

She remembers only being in the house the night two people were found murdered. Her father was there, too. Now her father is in prison; she hasn’t been in contact in years. Repressing that terrifying memory has caused Corinne moments of paranoia and panic. Sometimes she thinks she sees things that aren’t there, hears words that haven’t been spoken. Or have they? She fears she may be losing her mind, unable to determine what’s real and what’s not.

So when she senses her husband’s growing distance, she thinks she’s imagining things. She writes her suspicions off to fatigue, overwork, anything to explain what she can’t accept—that her life really isn’t what it seems.

When I heard that Courtney Cole was writing a psychological thriller, I was all in. The I read the blurb, and I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this one.

Such Dark Things is a twisted thriller with a bit of romance added in. There are some situations that appear in this book that those who read Courtney Cole’s other books may not be able to handle in this book. It’s why she chose to publish this under a pen name. So please keep that in mind if you decide to read this.

This book hooked me from the start. It’s told from two POVs – Jude and Corrine’s. They are a married couple; he’s a psychologist and she’s an ER doctor. And it’s from the both the past and present with the past leading up to the present.

Seventeen years ago on Halloween, Corrine witnessed her father kill two people but she remembers nothing about that night except standing next to the two dead bodies. Her father is serving time in prison for the murders and she’s been fighting demons from that night ever since.

Corrine is very dedicated to her job and spends alot of her time there. It also helps her from focusing on her nightmares that comes around this time of year. As Corrine is struggling to get a hold of her nightmares, she feels her husband is pulling away from her. Jude knows that Halloween is a very difficult time of the year for Corrine so he always gives her extra space to work through it. But he finds himself seeking out the attention of a younger woman. She gives him the attention that he’s missing from Corrine. And once he makes that first mistake, she makes it impossible for him to stop.

Courtney throws a lot of twists and turns into this story. I really enjoyed watching how everything played out. Every single character is unique and plays a significant role. Jude’s brother Michel, Corrine’s sister Jackie and best friend Lucy are all intricate in Jude and Corrine’s life.

Such Dark Things was riveting and captivating. While I did figure out a thing or two, I was still surprised by a few shocks that Courtney threw in and had my jaw dropping. I am really hoping that Courtney continues to write in this genre because she wrote one hell of an spellbinding read.

Excerpt

Prologue-
My skin is sticky with blood.
My waistband is wet with it, and I can taste it on my lips. It’s splattered on my face, and it tastes like metal that has been rotting in the sun and rain for a hundred years. The night makes me shiver, the cool breeze rustling my hair, and for a split second, I’m back there in that house, standing in that blood. My bare toes feel the warmth of the liquid turn cool as the minutes tick past.
Goose bumps raise on my neck, and a knot that I can’t swallow is lodged in my throat. My feet are frozen frozen frozen on the ground, and I can’t move.
Their eyes are open and lifeless, although they stare at me.
They see me.
Yet they see nothing.
I can’t breathe.
My lips are ice, just like theirs.
My heart is pounding and racing and stuttering, and I can’t breathe I can’t breathe I can’t breathe.
“Corinne. You’re safe here. Corinne.”
And just like that, I’m not there.
I’m here.
“There was blood all over me.” My words are stilted and fragile, like glass.
I stare at my hand, and even though it’s clean now, I see it as it was seventeen years ago, covered in the blood of two souls…souls that were living and that aren’t anymore. It’s hard to wrap my mind around. First they were breathing, and then they weren’t. It happened in a split second. I inhale shakily.
“Think about that moment,” the doctor instructs. “Who can you see?”
I think on that. “Melanie is next to me on the floor. Her head is bleeding into a pool. There is so much blood that it looks black.” I close my eyes, because it had been the first time I’d seen blood like that, and it terrified me. “Joe is on the bed. His blood is splattered all over the wall. Both of them have their eyes open.”
Staring at me.
The emotions welling up in me are like a wave, swelling, swelling, swelling…until I can’t handle it anymore. The horror and the guilt and the pain are just too much.
“I can’t do this,” I blurt out. “I’m done for the day.”
Dr. Phillips looks at me, and he’s calm and detached.
“Corinne, why are you here?”
I pause. What a stupid question. “You know why I’m here.”
I hate it when they treat me with such condescension.
“Humor me,” he tells me. “Why are you here?”
I grit my teeth and look away.
He waits.
“You’re saying that I tried to hurt myself. But I wouldn’t do that.”
I look at him now, and he’s so fucking emotionless. I look down at my left wrist, at the bandage covering up the stiches.
“I wouldn’t,” I insist again. “I’m a fucking physician. I wouldn’t have cut my wrist horizontally. If I really wanted to hurt myself, I would’ve known to cut vertically along the vein.”
I finger the gauze. Beneath it, the cut throbs, evidence of something I don’t remember doing.
“I’m not crazy,” I add. And I don’t know if I’m trying to convince Dr. Phillips, or myself.
“You’re not crazy.” He nods. “But you’ve experienced a mental break. You’re here because you need to deal with the causal underlying issue so that it won’t happen again. Right?”
He’s a fucking asshole.
I stare at the wall. At the whiteness, at the sterility.
“You need some plants in here,” I tell him, avoiding the question. “Greenery puts patients at ease. All this blankness…it’s maddening.”
“I’ll keep that in mind,” he says wryly. “Corinne…”
I interrupt. “Dr. Cabot,” I tell him. “I’ve earned it.”
“Dr. Cabot,” he corrects himself. “You’re right. You’ve earned it. You worked a long time to finish medical school and your residency. You’re a top ER physician. You have a life envied by everyone around you. You’ve got to take care of yourself, so you can protect this life you’ve built.”
I close my eyes. Behind my eyelids, it’s dark and safe. It’s black and warm.
“Protect it from what?” I whisper.
“You tell me,” he answers. “You’ve got something inside of you that is triggered now, something that creates panic and a fight-or-flight response. We know what your father did so long ago. What we don’t know is why…or what damage it has caused in you, damage that seems to be affecting you now.”
“I don’t know either,” I say helplessly, my eyes opening to the white walls again. “I can’t remember. I never could. You know that.”
“I know.” Dr. Phillips nods again, and he tries to be so fucking comforting. “You have a history of dissociative behavior. You blocked out what your father did so long ago, and it stands to reason that your brain has developed that as a defense mechanism. It’s doing it again now. If we don’t get to the bottom of why your memories are being triggered now, after all of these years…you’ll never have peace. Do we agree on that?”
Reluctantly, I nod.
“So we have to start at the beginning. You have to stay here and focus.”
Anger flares in me, red and hot, and I stare him down. He doesn’t blink and neither do I.
“Focus?” I ask him, and my words are sharp and I wish they would cut him. “You think it’s as simple as sitting down and focusing? How dare you sit there and tell me what to do, when you have no idea what it’s like?”
I stand up to leave, but the psychiatrist’s next sentence holds me in my place, freezing me.
“Corinne, you promised Jude you’d try.”
Jude.
My beautiful, understanding Jude.
I swallow hard. I did promise. And I have to follow through, even though the pain it causes me is immeasurable. I owe it to him. I’ll do it for him. Not for this psychiatrist, but for Jude.
My body folds back into the seat, and I finger the medical bracelet circling my right wrist. Corinne Elizabeth Cabot, Female. It’s me, condensed into one stark sentence, yet I’m a stranger to myself right now. That’s why I’m here. I don’t know myself or my thoughts. My memories are foreign, blocked, nightmarish, out of control.
“Fine.” There’s nothing else I can say.
Dr. Phillips is quietly triumphant. “Let’s begin again. Take a deep breath and close your eyes.”
I do, drawing the cool air in a rush over my teeth, expanding my lungs and holding it, before I let it slowly exhale. I do it again, then again.
“Think back to that night, Dr. Cabot. Stand in that room. Tell me where your father is.”
I envision it, I see it in my mind like it was yesterday. My father in his bloody steel-toed boots. “He’s on the porch, waiting for the police to come.”
“He left you alone in the house with two dead bodies?”
“Yes.”
“He didn’t try to run?”
“No.”
“Okay. What did you do then?” my doctor asks me calmly, unfazed by the ugliness of my story.
“I was stunned. I think I was in shock. My hand was bleeding.”
Dr. Phillips looks at my hand, because I’m stroking the scar now, an unconscious nervous tic that I often do when I’m anxious. “What happened to your hand?”
“I don’t remember.”
“Is there a lot that you don’t remember from that night?”
“Yes. You know that.”
“Yes, I do,” he acknowledges. “So you’re standing in the middle of a bloody crime scene because your father left you alone. What did you do then, Corinne?”
“I looked out the window,” I tell him. “I was frozen. I couldn’t move. My feet felt like concrete and I was afraid if I moved, my heart would explode. So I took deep breaths. I watched the trick-or-treaters walking by. I looked at the blood on my shoe. I looked at the jack-o’-lanterns that were lit on porches, and the ghosts hanging in the trees. There was a full moon. There was light on my shoulders.”
“Anything else?”
“I stared at the street sign on the corner. All Hallows Lane.”
“That’s ironic,” the doctor points out needlessly.
“Yes.”
“How long did you stand there?” His question is quiet.
“Until they came and took me away.”

TEASERSUNSHINE

Portrait of a beautiful blonde girl lying on a white bed

Excerpt

The door to his office opened before he finished unloading the bags. It was Stone. Oh joy. Perfect way to ruin lunch.

“You eating in here?” he asked. Again, he was dressed like he was going to a frat party, not to work with Jasper.

“Yes, and there isn’t enough for three. I thought you had a business lunch.”

He shrugged. “It’s over. Not hungry,” he paused and glanced briefly at me. “Just didn’t expect you to be eating in here.” He left out the “with her”, but it was understood in the tone of his voice.

“Better company in here,” Jasper told him, and at that moment, I wanted to kiss Jasper’s face. He had no problem with me. He didn’t think I was below him. Sure, I worked for him but he accepted me as a human. Unlike Stone.

“I’ve got the contract I picked up at lunch today if you want to go over it while you eat.”

I didn’t look at either of them. I kept my eyes focused on the food Jasper was placing in front of me. I felt like I was in the way, like most of the time Stone was around. He managed to make me feel awkward and unwanted.

“I’m going to enjoy my lunch date, and then I’ll look it over. Leave it on the desk.”

Again, the urge to kiss Jasper emerged.

“Date?” Stone asked, his voice sounding displeased as if the word “date” was crude or distasteful.

“Yes, Stone. Date.”

“She’s your employee,” Stone told him as if he’d somehow forgotten.

“Jesus, you can be an ass,” Jasper said with a chuckle. “Can you leave us to our lunch if all you’re going to do is be a dick?”

I am going to put it out there that yes, Sweet Little Thing, reminds me of Abbi Gline’s Fallen Too Far book. However, it is not a negative for me. Fallen Too Far is one of those books you pick up and read in a day, fall in love with the characters, and want more of them instantly. Think of it this way- You know when you get a book and every page is turned faster and faster so you can see what happens? Sweet Little Thing is like this for me. When I got to the end, I seriously was mad I finished it so fast because there is a huge cliff hanger which means now I have to wait for book two. This is going to be such a long wait.

Beulah and Jasper are endearing together. Beulah is an amazingly sweet character that is strong as well. She has been dealt some pretty shabby cards in life. Jasper entering into her life not only makes her world turn upside down but he makes it better. Jasper, I did not even like in the beginning but at the same moment Beulah fell in love with him, I am pretty sure I did as well.

As far as this being similar to Abbi Glines Fallen Too Far series, yes it seems to have a touch of the same elements. However, it is NOT the same story. I know that when I love a series, and I mean really love it, I read it over and over. I even read the male characters POV if one comes out. I sure as heck would read a series that was similar because it touched my heart. As a reader, I beg for authors to write more books like the ones I loved of theirs. Abbi Glines gave me more of what I love about her writing. Sweet Little Thing gives the reader the drama, passion, and undying love between

WHDK cover FINAL_1

On the northeast side of town, there is a house.

The house was once magical, filled with love and joy and plans for the future.

Inside its walls are many things that belong to me — my books, the china from my mother on my wedding day, the beautiful cage once home to two birds, now empty, just like me.

And a man.

A man who also belongs to me.

A man I no longer wish to keep.

A man who, no doubt, has not slept, though the sun is rising. Because the house where he waits is where I laid my head to rest every night for eight years. Until last night.

No one who knows me would believe Charlie Pierce, the quiet, bookish girl who never made waves is pulling out of the driveway of a man who isn’t her husband.

But they don’t know me at all.

I don’t even know me.

Not anymore.

They say there are two sides to every story, and I suppose in most cases, that’s true. But the one I live inside of? It has three.

On the northeast side of town, there is a house.

But there is no longer a home.

They say there are two sides to every story, and I suppose in most cases, that’s true. But the one I lived inside of? It had three.

I am on of the few who believe there is never two sides to a story – most would consider me cynical in my thinking and that is quite alright with me. Because there is never two sides to a story – there is side A, side B and the truth. And in this book, this story has ALOT of sides and each one is the truth, just depends on which character is telling you the story.

For those of you who are not fans of love triangles and cheating, this book will be difficult for you to read. If there is no way for you to understand why someone would cheat, do not read this book. For the rest of us, this book will be a great read to us.

Kandi does a great job with this book and the story of these characters. Everything plays out perfectly and the flow of everything is so smooth and natural. Nothing is rushed and you get to relish in the minute details of the story. This book is told mostly from Reece and Charlie’s POVs, as the story surrounds them and their past and how that leads to decisions they both make in the present.

I won’t go into details about what happens as the reader needs to experience everything firsthand. I will tell you that Charlie is kindergarten teacher who has been married to Cameron for 8 years. Cameron works for the same company that Charlie’s father started. Reese is Charlie’s brother’s best friend from high school and close to Charlie’s family. Reese is moving back into town for a teaching position as the same school Charlie teaches at.

I like Charlie – she may be quiet and reserved but she’s always been that way. She’s not exactly naïve, but she definitely doesn’t get out a lot. I love that she battles with herself – with her feelings, with her decisions, with her relationship not only with her husband, but with Reece. I love that she never gives up.

Reese – I have a lot of mixed feelings on him. He’s respectful of Charlie and her marriage. He wants to be her friend, if nothing else. But when she is at her weakest, he uses that to his advantage and doesn’t care at that moment that she is married. And that does not sit well with me. I know that he is fighting for what he wants, but damn that just irks me.

Cameron – I don’t like him one bit. Nope, you can’t change my mind either. I don’t give a shit how hard he tries to win her back – too little, too late. I get that he has his own demons from his past, but dude needs to realize he fucked up 5 years ago and that’s what broke everything.

“I love him Reese,” I whispered, the words cutting me like a dull razor blade as they left my lips. I knew they penetrated him just the same.
“Doesn’t change the fact that you love me, too.”

While I enjoyed the plot and angst given, just didn’t care for the two men. However, it’s not because I couldn’t relate to them, but because their actions annoyed me. How do I explain this – there are times when I don’t care for characters because the author just wrote shite characters (can’t relate to them, they bring nothing to the story). In this case, Kandi wrote characters that you are either going to love or hate because of how well she wrote them and the role they play in the story. And in this case, I want to tear their balls off and shove them down their throats For me, that’s what makes a book great – I feel strongly about a character, good or bad.

Overall, this book was great. Was it outstanding for me, no. I did not get that whole “holy shit, this book is a MUST READ” feeling. Mostly because I didn’t feel 100% vested in the characters; my heart wasn’t vested in the story as much as I have been in others. And that’s ok – others will feel more than I did. I do want to know how this story ends and where these characters end up. I just somehow missed the whole emotional roller coaster on this one.

I don’t know what love is anymore.

Well, that’s not entirely true, but I’m going to tell you a little secret: I’ve lost the spark.

You know the kind of spark I’m talking about?

Where butterflies take flight in your stomach from two hands innocently colliding. Or catching your breath when you first meet someone attractive. Yeah, that spark.

Except I haven’t felt that feeling in forever; there is nothing left inside of me.

Normally, this wouldn’t be a problem–but I’m a writer on a serious deadline, and my editor is breathing down my neck for a romantic, Nicholas Sparks type love story. No pressure, right?

That’s how I find myself flying across the country to crash a wedding in the name of research, dress and heels stuffed into my small suitcase.

It should be the easiest book research ever. Drinking some free champagne, basking in the love of two strangers, and tapping into my romantic side. That will be a breeze. I’m a pro. I can handle this.

Until I mistakenly end up in the wrong hotel room, naked as the day I was born, with the sexiest human I have ever met staring me down, wondering what I’m doing taking a shower in his bathroom. I don’t think calling it research will get me out of this pickle.

Anyone who knows me or reads my reviews, knows that I am HUGE Meghan Quinn fan – and I mean HUGE!!! She writes it, I am reading it without a clue to what’s it about. SIGN ME UP!! And this book was no different, however, I did know what it was about – Beck.

We met Beck in her book, Three Blind Dates. No, you don’t need to read that book first, but I highly recommend it just because you get that initial meeting of Beck and what is to come in this one. Beck was my runner-up in choices for Three Blind Dates (read it to find out what I mean) and I was so excited to know that his book was next after finishing it.

I really do not even know how to describe Beck except to say that he is he deep yet knows how to live life fully. He was so much more than I expected and I love getting to know this character more. He is the perfect match for Rylee.

“Sometimes you have to take a chance on something that makes you happy, regardless of the unknown.”

Beck has been pushing forward after some dark times in his life but his friends find that he doesn’t do much else aside from his work and passions. They want him to get back into the dating pool and have fun again. After a bum go on a blind date (again, read Three Blind Dates to see what happens), he is very hesitant to put himself out there. So his friends come up with the idea to go to Key West with them, crash a wedding they’re attending and maybe hook up with a single lady while enjoying the time away.

Rylee has been living life in the shadows and only recently started to come back to herself. She is a romance author who finds herself staring down a deadline with writers block in her path of completion. Zoey and Victoria are her best friends and writing buddies trying to help Rylee get her mojo back, but nothing seems to be working. Then the girls come up with a plan to have Rylee Crash a wedding that Zoey and Victoria are attending to see if that get Rylee’s groove back.

You can see where this is going – yes, Rylee and Beck meet. Their vacation fling is amazing. And even when they return to their lives, things just keep getting better. These two together was so funny and natural to watch. Things moved at a decent pace and nothing was rushed, which I enjoyed. Rylee is dead set on keeping things light and easy, Beck has other intentions.

Beck has no problems holding back on what he is feeling – he just lays it all out. Let me tell you, I am impressed by Rylee’s self control – if a man talked dirty to me like that when I was single, I would be climbing that man like a damn monkey – just saying. But he is also sweet and enduring, which is something new for Rylee to have directed at her from a man.

Rylee is really out of her element when it comes to Beck. He’s what she writes about, not what she gets in real life. I love that she is cautious yet flirtatious and tries her damn best to not get caught up in everything. But Beck just never gives up and that makes it harder each day for Rylee to walk away.

The Wedding Crashers is definitely a slow-burn romance. Meghan moves this book at the perfect pace though. Everything happens within a few months, but with the way Meghan has it all play out, it feels like so much longer (and that’s a good thing). It’s not boring, it’s natural progression of things and that just makes it even more intense and intriguing. I agree at times, I wanted things to move a bit faster, but in the end, I was so glad that it didn’t.

Meghan has written another amazing story with great characters that you will find yourself loving from the second you meet them. I almost feel like I know these characters personally and want all the best for them. Bravo Meghan!

Chills scream their way down my arms and legs, my nipples pucker, and just like that, with one word, all humor vanishes from our little conversation and awareness of this all-consuming man wrapped around me hits me hard.

Gathering myself, I say, “Tell me something Chris and Justine know about you.”

“Hmm.” His thumbs hook under the waistband of my shorts, playing with the lower part of my hipbones. His touch spurs on my pelvis, needing to rock, begging for him to go lower. My toes curl in my sandals and my back slightly arches, reaching for more. “Something they know about me.”

His mouth doesn’t stray from its position against my ear, and his hips start to slowly move underneath me, his legs tangling with mine. Involuntarily, one of my hands hooks the back of his neck as I hold on tightly to him, feeling like I need support from the onslaught of sensation I’m feeling.

I hear him say something, but it doesn’t register in my brain, which has turned to mush as his thumbs stray from my hipbones to right above my pubic bone.

There is no denying how turned on I am, how wet I am from his mere touch, how much—despite my reservations—I want this man.

With each stroke, my head turns farther and farther to the side until our noses are touching, Beck’s head bends forward to meet me halfway. My eyes flutter shut for a brief moment before I open them and am captured by those flecks of green and gold.

The air stills around us, our breath mixing, swirling between us, our lips so close.

One swipe of this thumb.

Another one.

I can’t breathe.

I can’t focus.

Another swipe, my head leans even closer, my tongue wetting my lips.

One more swipe . . .

My heart hammers in my chest, my skin prickling with awareness.

Beck brings his mouth even closer, only a whisper away now, and he waits.

Holding still.

His breathing feeling erratic beneath me.

One.

More.

Swipe.

And I’m gone.

I bring my mouth to his, slowly parting my lips ever so slightly, just enough to maneuver my mouth across his.

A low, provocative moan escapes Beck as one of his hands snags the back of my head and holds me in place, almost as if he lets go, I’ll disappear.

Needing more, I shift on his lap so I’m straddling him once again, my hands on his bare chest, feeling the powerful sinew that holds him together.

Our lips press and mold, mingling, taking, begging . . .

Desperate.

Beck’s tongue runs against my bottom lip, eliciting a moan from deep within me, lighting a fire so hot, so wild, my hands start to travel up his neck to his cheeks where I grip him, positioning his head so when I open my mouth, I can expertly dive my tongue onto his.

He groans, his lap shifting against mine now, his hard-on pressing against my wet and throbbing center. I match his rocking, using my position on his lap to take advantage of his length I can feel through his board shorts.

This is exactly what I didn’t want to happen, but God, am I happy it has. Maybe I really should live in the moment, maybe I should take advantage of the opportunity, maybe I should…

Born in New York and raised in Southern California, Meghan has grown into a sassy, peanut butter eating, blonde haired swearing, animal hoarding lady. She is known to bust out and dance if “It’s Raining Men” starts beating through the air and heaven forbid you get a margarita in her, protect your legs because they may be humped.

Once she started commuting for an hour and twenty minutes every day to work for three years, she began to have conversations play in her head, real life, deep male voices and dainty lady coos kind of conversations. Perturbed and confused, she decided to either see a therapist about the hot and steamy voices running through her head or start writing them down. She decided to go with the cheaper option and started writing… enter her first novel, Caught Looking.

Now you can find the spicy, most definitely on the border of lunacy, kind of crazy lady residing in Colorado with the love of her life and her five, furry four legged children, hiking a trail or hiding behind shelves at grocery stores, wondering what kind of lube the nervous stranger will bring home to his wife. Oh and she loves a good boob squeeze!

—-

White Knight is a standalone in the same world as King of Code, with its own beginning, middle, and end. You don’t need to read anything else to read White Knight.

Oh how I wanted to love this book more than I did. I love C.D. Reiss’s descriptive and detailed writing – it helps bring the stories to life. But for the life of me, this one just felt like it needed more, if that were even possible.

Christopher and Catherine had a sweet, young romance at 16 years old that was over too soon for them. Fast forward 13 years later and things have changed. Catherine still loves in her childhood home helping those in her community thrive, while Christopher is now rolling in the money in New York from hedge funds he creates. But neither feel completely fulfilled.

There are parts of this book that I really enjoyed – the characters and their small home town feel. Christine hit the nail on the head with this part. Loved everything about it and the feel I got from it. I enjoyed the beginning of this book so much when we were given flashbacks of their past that helped pave the way to where they are today. What I did not like was later in the book where a lot was told that happened and were not given those experiences to live through with the characters. That really hurt in me believing this whole HEA and their ending.

This book didn’t quite captivate my attention was much as King of Codes did (both can be read as standalones) and I just had this overall “meh” feeling about it. I felt like I was gipped on a lot later in the book and left me wanting so much more from these two.

For me, this book wasn’t great and it wasn’t terrible. It’s a slow, reminiscent story of young love when adults find each later on in life. Give it a try, you may enjoy it more than I did.

Excerpt:

I crossed the train tracks, looking both ways as if the freight ran on a thoroughfare. It was a few steps to the rows of mobile homes that defined that side of Barrington.

The playground was in a little clearing just west of the center of the trailers. My fingertips were cold, but the rest of my body thrummed and pulsed so hard that I made my own heat. I told myself I didn’t know what to expect from this meeting, but if I didn’t know what to expect, I knew what to hope, and they were pretty much the same thing.

“Catherine!” Chris wasn’t loud, but the excitement in his voice made him sound as if he were shouting.

“Chris?” I spun around, looking for him in the darkness.

And on a three-quarter turn, he crashed into me, all lips and hands, digging his fingertips into the muscles of my back as he pulled me close. I tasted the minty toothpaste in his mouth and thought he brushed his teeth for me. He kissed me as if he would never kiss me again. He kissed me as if this was the last kiss he would ever have in his life. As if he wanted to eat me alive. I’d given over my freedom and my choice to this thing with him, to this moment, to this stupid set of choices that would ruin me forever. As surely as the sun would rise, I was the designer of my own destruction.

I wanted to be destroyed by that kiss.

When Chris took my hand, I imagined I could feel the blood pulsing through the veins, the cells in his skin. I imagined that when my nerve endings vibrated at his touch, they connected to his somehow.

Everything felt new. I was discovering that my body had routes between one place and another that I never knew existed. I never knew that when a man touched my hand or kissed my nipples, I could feel it between my legs.

There was a click behind the tree line, and he stopped kissing me with a jerk. We froze long enough for him to smile.

About the Author

CD Reiss is a New York Times bestseller. She still has to chop wood and carry water, which was buried in the fine print. Her lawyer is working it out with God but in the meantime, if you call and she doesn’t pick up she’s at the well hauling buckets.

Born in New York City, she moved to Hollywood, California to get her master’s degree in screenwriting from USC. In case you want to know, that went nowhere but it did give her a big enough ego to write novels.

She’s frequently referred to as the Shakespeare of Smut which is flattering but hasn’t ever gotten her out of chopping that cord of wood.

If you meet her in person, you should call her Christine.

GETITON_TEASER3

Get It On is book five in this series, but can be read as a standalone. Each book is about a particular couple, but if you want to get the whole feeling and follow the underlying story (saving The Fix on Sixth), then read them in order.

Get It on is Tyree’s book. He’s the owner of Fix on Sixth and is now relying on his friends and community to save the bar. As a man who’s been fate’s punching bag, dealing with the loss of something is nothing to Tyree. However, he’s not about to let this one go without a fight and he is putting his all into saving his bar. Then in walks Eva and his focus becomes shifted.

Eva and Tyree’s story could so easily have been one of those perfect slow burns, but alas, that was not the case with this one (in part because it’s told as part of short novella series). It was still enjoyable, but I just felt things were too rushed at times.

Julie, as always, writes amazing third person POV’s stories – she is one of the few authors that I do read who write in 3rd person. It’s extremely hard to right characters in 3rd person POV and allow the reader to still connect to the characters and the story but Julie does it flawlessly.

Eva had always thought that Tyree died in war and when these two are face to face again, the chemistry has changed on bit. But it’s Tyree’s war between his head and heart that cause a lot of problems in the moving forward. This is where I wished we had more to the story and the results played out in a slower motion – I just felt things were wrapped up to quickly and perfectly. As much as he was confused on things, he was able to sort them all out quickly with no problems.

Overall, it’s not my favorite in the series, but it was still a good read.

All I am going to say is, “Hell yeah I have something to look forward to every month!”. Okay Down on Me gives you that romance fix you need but aren’t sure you have enough time to get it. By that I mean, it is short, fast paced and to the point. I feel like J. Kenner is really using this first book in the Man of the Month series to really set it up. The great thing is that you get to know the key players and how this Man of the Month comes about. What is also fantastic is that you get to have a new book monthly as well as a cookbook!! YYYEEEESSSS- book and food- you cannot go wrong, just BYOB and you are all set readers!

True to J. Kenner form, the story of Jenna and Reece is so fun and hot to read. I literally read this in two days! It has a little bit of a rushed ending but why prolong something you know is going to happen? You really need this one to start the series off so you can get a good understanding of how everything unfolds. This is really a must-read series from a great romance author. I cannot wait to tell you about the next one because the Epilogue to the next book in the series is juicy!

Menace by Laramie Brisco…Release Blitz with Review

Title: Menace
A Moonshine Task Force Series Novel
Author: Laramie Briscoe
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: March 9, 2018
Blurb
Mason “Menace”
Harrison
“Single and ready to mingle……”

Those are the words above every picture of almost every female that strikes my
interest on this dating app my son talked me into getting. After being a single
dad for seventeen years, I’m ready to spread my wings, just not with most of
the co-eds who keep hitting on me and calling me daddy.

Now that Caleb’s in his Senior year of high school, I feel like I can let go of
the iron-clad control I’ve had on myself without his Mom in our lives. I’ve
enjoyed raising him, love the relationship we have, and while he went off the
rails for a bit last year, we’re closer than we’ve ever been. He’s got a full
ride to the University of Alabama, and I’ve settled into my spot with the
Moonshine Task Force.

But my son doesn’t warm my bed, he isn’t someone I can share my dreams with,
and he’s not the person I want to grow old with by my side. I’m not sure who
that is yet, but the smokin’ hot lady going by the name BeachBum83 definitely
has every single bit of my interest.

Karina Holland

“Looking for a good time, maybe more…..”

Those were the lamest words I ever typed in my life, but it was the best I had
for the dating app my friend, Violet talked me into joining. I didn’t have any
high hopes for myself. As a High School English teacher, I’m sick of pervy
Dad’s hitting on me when they come in to discuss their child’s lack of
motivation to read the classics and apply themselves.

Until the day Mason Harrison walks into my classroom. I had no idea Caleb’s Dad
was the man I met off that dating app who showed me how flexible I really am in
the back of his Jeep. Within minutes of the parent/teacher conference he proved
the sparks weren’t one-time only when we christened my desk.

Mason and Caleb? They touch a part of my heart that no one’s ever touched
before, and when a threat from the past shows up, I prove just how tough I
really am.

Okay I am just in LOVE with Laramie Briscoe’s books. I am truly professing it right here-right now. I had the pleasure of being a new reader last year and she is not disappointing me. I know that I am bias to a tattoo police office story but let me tell you when that said officer is a hot, caring, loving dad of a teenager- I mean come on- I am more than hooked.

Laramie has this uncanny ability to take real life situations and transform them into hot, steamy, sexy written words. I love the dynamic of these characters, Mason (aka Menace) and Karina. They are a great couple to read individually and together. They actually meet on a dating app and you just want both of them not to be lonely any more. Karina is Mason’s sons teacher which makes quite an interesting situation but it is so fun to read how this plays out.

Menace is a great addition to the Moonshine Task Force series. This book is a fast read because it gets right to the point (*wink-wink) but it doesn’t start strong and end dull. There are some twist and turns that were absolutely wonderful and refreshing to read. For real people, you have to pick up at least one of Laramie Briscoe’s novels because you will not be disappointed.

Cake by Carmen Jenner…Blog Tour & Review

Cake_Carmen_Jenner_Blog_Tour.jpg

Cake, an all-new romantic and hilarious standalone from USA Today bestselling author Carmen Jenner is available NOW!

Cake_Carmen_Jenner_AMAZON 4.52.14 PM.jpg

Poppy Porter’s ex is getting married … to her ex-best friend. To land her dream job of partner in the most prestigious firm on the Upper East Side, Poppy must now pull double shifts as their wedding planner and maid of honor. And the icing on a truly craptastic cake? Leo Nass. Handsome, infuriating, womanizer, and … the best man. Despite their longstanding loathing, Poppy doesn’t see Leo coming. Literally.

One ruined cake.

One archnemesis.

One hour to save the wedding.

Can they put their hatred aside long enough to save Poppy’s job and Bridezilla’s head from exploding?

Piece of cake, right?

Excerpt:

I sneak closer to the bed, my heart pounding as I throw the pillow at him. The guy shifts in his sleep, and his breathing slows, but a beat later the snoring starts again and I have to resist the urge to scream. Instead, I raise my poker and jab the sheet covered body. It’s not hard, just a quick jab or two, but he still doesn’t stir.

“Hey, asshole!” I shout, and whack him hard in the butt with my poker.

The giant freak jumps up and seizes my hand. His grip forces me to drop my weapon. He yanks me toward him—on top of him—and this is how I find myself eye to eye with the beast. He breathes his heavy, stinking breath on my face, and I wince and wrinkle my nose.

Leo’s eyes crinkle in the corners as he laughs. “Morning, Pop Tart.”

“Get the hell out of my bed. And brush your goddamn teeth. What are you doing in my house, Nass?”

“Ah, still feisty, huh? Is this like an all-day thing with you, or do you eventually turn from an angry sea witch into a person? Would coffee help?”

“Fuck you, Leo.”

“Darlin’, you wish.”

“You’re disgusting. I wouldn’t touch you if—”

“Yeah, yeah, if I were the last man on Earth. I’ve heard it all before, sweet cheeks, and I don’t buy it for a second.” He flips us so suddenly my head spins. I’m beneath him, my wrists pinioned to the bed above my head by just one of his strong hands. The other glides up my side. My sheets have twisted up around us, but from this angle it looks as if Leo Nass is very much naked in my bed.

“Goddamn it,” I complain once I find my voice. “I’m going to need to burn these sheets after you leave.”

His eyebrow quirks, and the grin he gives me is all-out salacious. He shifts his weight between my legs, then he drops his hips and grinds his erection against me. I’m stunned, speechless. I have no words. They’ve all left me because my brain has turned to mush and my vagina is the only one thinking, and I’m really not okay leaving her in charge. “Why burn them when we’re not done messing them up?”

Carmen Jenner, bravo on this one!! I loved every bit of this book.

I was not sure what to expect when I started this book, as this is only my second book by Carmen, but I know that I enjoyed her writing on the first book I read. So I at least knew I would enjoy the writing; but I absolutely loved this whole story.

“Nass the Ass”

Those three words will forever be stuck in my head and will always remind of this book and why it is so great. “Nass the Ass” is Leo Nass, Poppy’s archnemeis and best friend of her now ex-fiancé. The ex-fiancé’s who’s wedding she is now assisting to her best friend, well now, ex-best friend. And let me make it clear that Poppy is not letting them walk all over her with this one. She’s doing it to keep her job and also get that damn promotion she’s wanted. So, Poppy is being the bigger person and taking one for the team.

But not only is she coordinating this wedding, her supposed best friend wants Poppy to be her maid of honor!! Oh people, let me tell you it’s just getting started. To top it all off, Leo is bestman. So everyone that Poppy would prefer to never deal with again, they’re all front and center of her life right now. And it’s quite the spectacle. LOL

I loved the interactions and banter between everyone. I don’t think there was a time I was not double over laughing at something. And it wasn’t anything too over the top or too cheesy either. It felt all flowed naturally with these characters and I felt like I was watching a TV show or movie play out.

This is one book that I highly urge EVERYONE to read!!
