They call me Rage.

My real name is like a shadow, always close behind, but never quite able to catch up.

I fly under the radar because no one ever suspects I’m capable of the kind of brutal violence I commit each and every day.

You see, I’m a girl. I’m nineteen.

And I’m a killer.

This life is all I know. It s all I want to know. It keeps the s**t buried that I need kept buried. It allows me to live without thinking too much.

Without dwelling on the past.

Until him.

It all changes when an ordinary boy becomes my next target.

And my first love.

I have to choose.

The only life I ve ever known has to die, or he does.

Either way, I ll be the one pulling the trigger…

All the Rage is a STANDALONE

Prologue

It was once said that if you love someone enough you should let them go.  If they come back to you, they were always meant to be yours.

It’s kind of bullshit.

My story was a little different than most.  I was a little different than most.

Because in my story, if you love someone enough, you should first drop the gun.

review

I knew after we met Rage in Soulless, that we’d be seeing her again in her own book.  And she’s freaking rocks!!

Rage is exactly what you can expected when it comes to TM, but with added wit and humor injected into it.  All The Rage can be read as a standalone but if you’ve read Soulless,  your interests have already been piqued.

Rage isn’t what you would describe as a “normal” person when it comes to her reactions and feelings.  She’s tried fitting in but when she does, she realizes she isn’t herself.  But she does find a way to fit in the world as herself.

Rage is assigned to “babysit” Nolan on her next assignment.  And babysitting is the last thing she ever wants to do.  She’s an arsonist, a hitwoman.  She is to watch Nolan and learn more about him and his family, from afar.

Nolan is stuck at his grandparents cottage, healing from a serious hockey injury.  He’s your typical boy next door.  Nothing glamorous about him. However, Nolan somehow finds himself at the bottom of his pool, drowning and the only person to save him is Rage.  And so begins their story.

TM delivers a suspenseful, gritty and dark plot with some added humor tossed in.  There’s a lot of mystery surrounding both Rage and Nolan.  They both only give enough information needed and nothing more.  Rage has always been able to get the job done and move on to the next.  But as she slowly learns who Nolan is, her job becomes harder to continue.  Nolan is the first person to ever calm the anger and rage within her and she has no idea how to handle that.

I love how TM is able bring us refreshing new characters and keep her stories moving forward with a whole different twist.  Every character has their own demons and  yet we always find ourselves hoping a HEA in their story.

Bravo!!  I am looking forward to more!!

My purpose

My love

My soul

Death knocks on my door, I want to answer, but every time I reach for the handle — the promise I made her brings me back.

So I breathe.

I live.

I hate.

And I allow the anger to boil beneath the surface of a perfectly indifferent facade. I am broken, I don’t want to be fixed.

But the Empire is crumbling and it’s my job to fix it.

My job to mend the pieces that were scattered over thirty years ago.

A trip to New York, only one chance to redeem a lost part of our mafia family.

The only issue is, the only way to fix it, is to do something I swore I’d never do again.

An arranged marriage.

Only this time,

I won’t fall.

Or so help me God, I will kill her myself.

My name is Sergio Abandonoto, you think you know my pain, my suffering, my anger, my hate?

Empire Teaser #4 [19449]

The loving couple kissing in the rain on a turquoise background

review

WOW! WOW! WOW!  Where do I start???

Empire is part of the Eagle Elite series.  All of the books up this point, can be read as a standalone.  However, you MUST read Elude before reading Empire.  Trust me – you’ll regret it if you don’t.

And FYI – if you have not read Elude before reading this review, my review contains spoilers of Elude.  So again – read Elude before reading Empire.  PLEASE!!

Empire starts off where Elude finished – Sergio mourning the death of Andi.  In Elude, Sergio won me over with this changing ways when it came to Andi.  In Empire, he owned my heart and soul.

Sergio once again is asked to fulfill and honor a family promise.  And Sergio being a man loyal to his family, will do anything to protect his family, even when he’s struggling to move forward.

“Some of the most important treasures are ones we haven’t yet discovered.”

Sergio throws the same walls up that he did when he first met Andi.  He has felt love now and lost it.  He refuses to go through that again.

Val is the exact opposite of Andi.  She’s never been exposed to her true family secrets and is completely ignorant of what truly goes down.  She’s young, innocent and pure.  I loved Val from the start.  Even though she looks fragile, she is done being pushed around and left in the dark.

To say that Val and Sergio have a rocky start would be slightly off balance.  These two are at each other throats.  He shuts her out of his life and wallows in his despair.  Val does what she can to survive in her new life and surroundings.  There’s a lot of tension, hated and confusion between these two.

“Sometimes what we say we don’t want is exactly what we need, what we crave.”

I thought I cried a lot in Elude.  Rachel gutted me in Empire.  Yes, her humor and wit was there but the book had me crying a lot more.  Watching Sergio go through his stages of grief is gut wrenching.  Plus everything else that we read about, my heart just hurt.

I can say enough about this book.  Rachel’s writing style always pulls me in and keeps me glued to the pages til the end.  You will feel everything that Sergio goes through.  You will find yourself rooting for Val and offering your support of kicking Sergio’s ass.  LOL

Another fabulous hit by Rachel.  I can’t ever get enough of her writing.

“Even those who accepted the state of being lost…dream of being found.”

EXCERPT:

“Taxi.” I held up my hand. “It’s too cold to walk.”

“Is it?”

“For those of us who have hearts,” I said under my breath.

He paused and then burst out laughing. “Holy shit, was that a dig at me?”

I shrugged as the taxi pulled up.

“Damn, and you’re not even apologizing.”

“It was more of a passing comment under my breath…” I got into the taxi and slid across the cold, worn vinyl seat. “But true.”

Sergio slammed the door after him. “And here I thought I was making a good impression.”

“You offered to kill me if I kissed you.”

The taxi driver frowned into the rearview mirror.

“She’s kidding,” Sergio reassured him.

I refused to let him get off that easy. “You also look at me like you want to throw up.”

Mr. Taxi Driver’s nostrils flared.

“Uh.” Sergio laughed uncomfortably. “I just have a lot on my mind.”

“The wife.”

Taxi Driver’s eyes looked like they were going to bug out of his head. Yeah, this was probably the best entertainment he’d had all day.

“I don’t talk about it,” Sergio said in a drop-the-subject voice.

“Maybe you should.”

“I have enough money to afford a therapist, thank you,” he said through clenched teeth.

“Money doesn’t buy happiness,” I fired back.

Sergio released a string of pithy curses. “Did someone spike your milk this morning during show and tell?”

“Lactose intolerant.”

“Sorry. Your Kool-Aid.” His eyes narrowed. “It’s like you’re trying to piss me off.”

Bingo. I smiled. “Funny, that’s what Dante says to me all the time. Just think of all the things you get to look forward to. Isn’t that what you said you wanted?”

Sergio looked ready to strangle me. “No. I don’t believe I asked for an annoying little sister, but if that’s what you’re offering, please don’t let me stop you. Just know, I won’t hesitate to put you over my knee if you get out of hand.”

The minute the words left his mouth. I froze.

He froze.

The taxi driver stared little laser-like holes into the rearview mirror.

And Sergio leaned toward me.

I swallowed as tension swirled around us.

He gripped me by the chin and turned my head to the side, his lips brushing my ear. “It’s like you have a death wish.”

“You wouldn’t do it.”

He pulled back as both of his eyebrows shot up, and then he looked down, like something had caught his eye.

I followed the direction of his gaze and let out a little gasp as a gun dug into my stomach.

“It’s been directed at you for the last four minutes,” Sergio said through a practiced smile. “I meant what I said. Listen well. I keep my word. Kiss me, and blood will be spilled.”

“Y-you’re a crazy person!” I hissed, shoving at his chest. “And I wasn’t going to kiss you!”

“Sure you weren’t.” He put the gun away. “Good talk though, right? Oh look, the movie theater.”

To say that I scrambled out of the car like a kid running away from her kidnapper would be a gross understatement, but the minute my feet hit the pavement, I paused.

My body told me to run.

The guy had pulled a gun.

On me.

I didn’t even watch violent movies, I’d just panicked and said the first thing that popped into my head!

And I was about to go to the theater with a guy who probably showered in blood on a daily basis and by the looks of it — got off on it.

Shivering, I forced myself to take a deep breath and wrapped my jacket tighter around my body.

That was the thing about men like Sergio, or maybe just loyalty in general. He’d promised he would keep me safe, but I wondered if that promise was only extended until I was more trouble than I was worth.

I was safe, not because of what I was to him.

But because of who my dad had been to him.

I was nothing.

And yet, a part of me still yearned to be… something.

Anything really.

Pathetic.

“Change your mind?” Sergio’s smooth voice interrupted my thoughts. He was the type of man you felt even when he wasn’t speaking. His presence was impossible to ignore, kind of like his ridiculous good looks.

Weren’t mafia guys supposed to be old?

Fat?

Chain smokers who bought Cuban cigars and sat behind large desks while counting money and ordering hits on people who pissed them off?

“No.” I finally found my voice. “I was just thinking….”

“About?” His hand touched my back, ushering me forward, but not pushing, almost as if he was giving me the option of still saying no.

I increased my pace so that I couldn’t feel the warmth of his fingertips. “Popcorn.” I turned and winked, hoping it would hide the fact that my body was shaking.

Maybe I was the crazy one.

Because he was armed.

The man was armed.

And he had no qualms about pointing his weapon at me whenever I got too close.

Huh, we’d have a happy marriage.

I guess we’d never argue, since I liked living.

And, you know, breathing.

It would suck not to make my twenty-first birthday because I didn’t fold the towels just right.

And again, I froze.

Was he that neurotic? Or was it just the closeness?

“On a scale of one to ten…” I was proud of the way I kept the shaking out of my voice. Why was I so scared? Oh right, because he’d pointed a gun, no, shoved a freaking gun into my stomach and done it with a smile on his face. “How OCD are you?”

An easy laugh escaped him as he glanced around the movie theater lobby and then back at me. “What makes you think I’m OCD?”

“Things.” I gulped then forced a smile that I didn’t feel. How was I supposed to go through an entire movie knowing he was one uncomfortable conversation away from losing it? “So?”

“What can I get you?” A teen boy looked at Sergio then smiled wider when his eyes fell to me.

Immediately, Sergio wrapped a protective arm around me, basically forcing my body to curve into his warmth. “My wife and I will have two buckets of popcorn, two packs of Sour Patch Kids, and a bottled water.”

I didn’t correct him about the water.

“Wait.” Sergio held up his hand. “Sorry, Dr. Pepper mixed with Coke.”

The teen scrunched up his face then rung us up. His eyes fell to me again then back at the register, like he was trying not to look but couldn’t help it, which was comical, since I didn’t really think I was anything to look at.

When he handed Sergio back his change I could have sworn I heard a growl from my “husband.”

As it was, he jerked the candy so hard out of the kid’s hands that I was surprised he didn’t do a front flip over the counter.

“He’s a boy,” I whispered under my breath. “No need to shoot him too.”

Sergio glanced down at me, muttered a curse. “He was staring.”

“He looked about one science project away from solving world hunger via his mom’s basement… hardly the type of guy that I’d date.”

“Date?” Sergio said it so loudly the people in front of us waiting to show the attendant their tickets jumped and then turned around. “What the hell do you mean date?”

Crap. I’d messed up again.

My palms went sweaty while my face felt numb with fear. Regardless of how pretty he was to look at — I was finally fully aware of how dangerous he was to me.

To everyone around me.

Sweat trickled down my lower back as I gulped down more soda and shrugged. “I just mean, he’s not my type.”

“No shit he isn’t, because you don’t get a type anymore.”

“Right.” I licked my lower lip, pretending not to be scared, pretending to be the brave person I wasn’t was wearing on me.

By the time we made it into the theater I was dizzy.

It was too much all at once.

“So…” Sergio’s voice was in my ear. I jumped a foot. He frowned as if he couldn’t figure out why I’d be so jumpy. “Dante sits behind you, right?”

“Right.” I exhaled in relief. I forgot. It wasn’t a date. It was a challenge. He’d called me his sister, so therefore he was my brother, right? Hah. I relaxed a bit as I pointed to a seat a few rows back and quickly stole the goodies out of his hands then made my way to my own seat before he could object.

The credits started rolling.

And I found myself ducking in the chair.

The hair on the back of my neck stood on end.

As if I was being watched — because I was.

Ten minutes into the movie, I was so stressed out, I almost burst into tears. My back was to him.

Wasn’t that a big no-no? My back was to the dude with the gun.

Even though he was supposed to protect me with the gun, all bets were off now.

Sweat pooled in the palms of my hands.

The music rose as one of the actresses ran down the stairs screaming.

I couldn’t take it.

And then, a body sat down next to me.

Sergio gave me a suspicious look then put a seat between us.

I exhaled.

But it wasn’t relief.

At least I knew where he was.

And where the gun was, he was right handed, so there was that.

I finally allowed myself to relax enough to watch the movie when I saw Sergio’s right hand duck into his jacket.

I gripped the plastic arm rests, my fingers digging into the cheap sticky plastic material as he slowly pulled something out.

He turned.

And I flinched so hard that there was no mistaking what I thought he was doing.

Even though he had grabbed a black cell phone.

The damage was done.

My entire body shook as a big fat tear escaped, I tried to wipe it away but I wasn’t fast enough.

“S-sorry.” I shoved past him and ran.

But my body was too scared.

Too tired

To make it very far.

Get the beginning of Sergio’s story in Elude on sale now.

Twenty-Four hours before we were to be married–I offered to shoot her.

Ten hours before our wedding–I made a mockery of her dying wish.

Five hours before we were going to say our vows–I promised I’d never love her.

One hour before I said I do–I vowed I’d never shed a tear over her death.

But the minute we were pronounced man and wife–I knew.

I’d only use my gun to protect her.

I’d give my life for hers.

I’d cry.

And I would, most definitely, lose my heart, to a dying girl—a girl who by all accounts should have never been mine in the first place.

I always believed the mafia would be my end game–where I’d lose my heart, while it claimed my soul. I could have never imagined. It would be my redemption.

Or the beginning of something beautiful.

The beginning of her.

review

Well, Nazarea, N to most everyone, has knocked another out of the park for me!!  And it was nothing like I expected.

DSS is very much a suspenseful and thrilling romance.  But what drove this book was the suspense and learning all about these characters – not just the main characters, but the secondary ones as well.

“The brutality we saw this week.  It was one family’s secrets and rage.  I wonder if that will be the end of it.  But I know, it’s not.  Because secrets.  They’re everywhere. And they’ll come to light.”

I truly don’t even know where to start explaining great this book is and not give any important details away.  N writes a very intertwined and secretive thrilling mystery.  The book is told from Hazel and Archer’s POV.  They have their own secrets together.  But it’s when the secrets of others come to light, that they start hiding things from another.  They also realize, they’ve been in the dark on other things because they chose to not see what was really right in front of them.

I absolutely loved all the twists, turns, secrets revealed, and how everything is truly tied together.  N truly crept me out with Michael, John and Hannah – like goosebumps all over.  As I was reading this whole book, I could visual everything and everyone.  Like a damn series on TV and I couldn’t stop watching it all play out before.  I had to know the who, why, what.

“Three killers, two cops and a journalist walk into a bar.  Sounds like a bad joke, right?  It’s not.  It’s the end – dear God I hope it’s the end – of the worst day of my life.  I just hope we walk out alive.”

And don’t get my wrong.  The romance was there in this book, it just didn’t play a very huge part of the plot.  And I think N wrote the romance part perfectly – it was just right added touch needed to this book – to bring it all together.

I am looking forward to what N brings us next!

Love Sick: A Memoir by Cory Martin

Love Sick by Cory Martin

LOVE SICK
A Memoir

“Unflinchingly honest and vulnerable, Martin’s book says all the things people need to hear and few are brave enough to voice. Full of humor, absurd situations, and wry observations, her story inspires us to never stop looking for love.” – Stephanie Savage, co-creator Gossip Girl

“This is an honest book that does not hesitate in pulling its punches. Packed with emotion, it will leave you turning the pages in anticipation…” – New York Journal of Books

“Many women spend their thirties trying to get settled in their careers, friendships, and love lives, Cory Martin spent hers trying to do all that while dealing with an insane medical curveball. An incredible story told with honesty, humor, and hope.” – Leila Gerstein, creator Hart of Dixie, writer Gossip Girl, The O.C.

“Candid, wise, funny, heartbreaking and ultimately inspirational: in an unpredictable world, Cory Martin’s Love Sick reminds us of what really matters.” – Matt Ward, writer Madam Secretary, Suburgatory, My Name Is Earl

“I expected Cory Martin’s memoir about a girl’s diagnosis and struggle with multiple sclerosis to be heart-breaking, but I didn’t expect it to also be a hilarious, hip, and sexy trip through her adventures in dating and her un-jaded quest for true love. You’ll cry but more importantly you’ll laugh.” – Marianne Wibberley, writer Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, National Treasure

From a former writer on the once popular television show, The O.C., comes LOVE SICK (Write Out Publishing, February 9, 2016, $24.95, hardcover) a smart and witty account of dating while navigating a life of uncertain health. This powerful memoir speaks to a new generation of women, sparking the conversation: when you’re dealing with illness and you’re still single, what do you do? Face it alone, or look for love?
At 28, Cory Martin thought she had it all, a budding career as a writer in Hollywood, an apartment of her own, and a healthy obsession with yoga. But when she found herself on the floor of her apartment wailing into the phone, ‘but I don’t want to be sick,’ her entire world came crashing down.
A doctor had just revealed that she had multiple sclerosis, a potentially debilitating disease, her good friend was getting married that weekend and the only people she wanted to call were her parents. In a time when she was supposed to be coming into her own as an adult, all she could think was who’s going to want to marry me now?
As she embarked on a medical quest, subjecting herself to countless MRIs and a painful spinal tap that landed her in the ER, Cory simultaneously threw herself head first into dating. But no matter how many doctors she saw or men she met there would never be a cure for MS. And if you think it’s hard to get the guy you’re dating to give you a ride to the airport, try getting him to drive you to the hospital. Add to that an unfortunate incident with a blue thong and a cute young doctor, and Cory quickly realized that just as there was no concrete method to diagnose and treat the disease, there was no surefire way to find “the one.”
Written from a place of strength and vulnerability, LOVE SICK is an unforgettable tale of heartache, perseverance and love. True to life and relatable, it is a story of facing one’s fears head on with humor and grace. There is no magical ending and no grand epiphany. Instead it is Cory Martin’s desire to be loved and feel normal that makes her journey so poignant.
Write Out Publishing is an independent press based in Los Angeles, publishing books and short stories. Its mission is to “write out” the world’s problems one story at a time. They are committed to donating ten percent of the profits from each work sold to a charity of the author’s choice. review

From time to time I find myself drawn to memoirs or autobiographies.  Cory Martin’s publisher contacted me in regards to receiving an arc in exchange for an honest review.  I saw that it was a memoir but to be honest, what made me jump on board to read it was that Cory written for the hit television show, “The O.C.” which just happens to be one my all-time favorite shows.  So I jumped at the chance to read her memoir.

Anyway, as I started reading this book, I was just completely amazed about how honest, real and raw she is.  She doesn’t hide anything – she explains exactly what she was thinking, how she felt, when she was diagnosed with MS (multiple sclerosis).  There were times I just wanted to hug her and take away her frustrations, anger and confusion.

Love sick isn’t about the ins and outs, dos and don’ts of MS.  It’s about Cory’s daily, weekly, annual journey of what it’s like to find out you have MS and then what happens afterwards.  But she also makes you laugh with her quirkiness and openness about her thoughts and feelings.  Cory brings up many important questions that I am sure anyone diagnosed with an incurable disease will have.  She doesn’t hold back on anything.

I enjoyed reading about Cory’s journey and all the ups and downs she had.  Even though Cory may not have seen it when she was going through everything, she was and is an extremely strong woman.  She never gave up on learning more about MS.  Yes, doing google searches probably causes us all to get more information than we probably want or need, but when you are getting undecided answers from doctors – what are you to do??  And Cory is flat-out honest in her path to figure out what exactly is causing her to have all these unusual aches and pains.

I applaud Cory for writing this memoir.  I urge anyone to read this – it’s very thought-provoking and moving.  And the best part – 10% of the profits from this book will be donated to the National MS Society.

Questions for Cory Martin, author of LOVE SICK.

At what point did you decide you wanted to be a writer?

Before I became a writer in any sense, I was an avid reader. I remember the first book I actually learned how to read – Dr. Seuss’s Are You My Mother? To this day I can still feel that excitement when I read the words to my mom and she praised me for getting them right. From then on I read every book I could get my hands on. Eventually I learned to write and that started to transform from classroom assignments to my own explorations in writing. In high school, I frequently found ways to turn ordinary writing assignments into creative writing pieces. Junior year we had to write a piece about fate vs. free will and what that meant to us. While the other kids in my class wrote their straightforward opinions, I wrote my paper as a ‘choose your own adventure’ book. I compared fate and free will to these books and explained it by giving the reader the option on how to read my paper. It wasn’t until college however that I really decided that I wanted to be a writer. When I first left my small town in Indiana to go to school in LA at USC, my major was undecided. I’d looked at journalism and communications, but they didn’t appeal to me that much. So I stayed undecided and I took a required GE class on writing papers and instead of writing mine as assigned I once again turned it into a creative writing piece. This time however the professor acknowledged my skills and then wondered if I’d ever considered majoring in Creative Writing. I hadn’t. In fact, I didn’t even know you could major in it. So I chose Creative Writing and I’ve never felt more sure of a decision since.

Creative Writing classes mainly focus on short stories and poetry, how did you end up working in Hollywood?

When you go to a school like USC that’s known for producing some of the Hollywood greats, you kind of get sucked into it. But truthfully, the industry has always fascinated me – there’s something about the draw of celebrity and fantasy that a shy Midwestern girl finds hard to resist (yes, growing up I wanted to go to school with Donna, Brenda and Kelly – because life in 90210 looked perfect). Also, I thought making a living as a novelist would be too hard, and all you hear about in Los Angeles is writers selling scripts for a million dollars. So I devised a plan. I’d work in Hollywood so that I could make enough money to retire and write novels. Funny thing is, the first thing I ever got paid to write was a novel.

You were fairly young the first time you got paid to write, what was that experience like?

I was twenty-four when I wrote the first novelization of the television show The OC. It was crazy because I was also working as an assistant to Stephanie Savage, the producer behind Gossip Girl, The OC, Astronaut Wives’ Club and others. I was basically working ten to twelve hours a day on the TV shows and movies she was producing and spending whatever extra time I could find to write the novel. I remember I got the assignment in December. I figured, since all I had ever read about writing novels was that it took writers years to write books, that I would have at least a year to write this one. Boy was I wrong. I turned in one chapter in mid-December. I thought Scholastic would send me some notes and I’d keep going from there. Instead, they called in January and asked if I could have the book done at the end of the month. I was flabbergasted. In my head I thought I was going to be the next great American writer and I did not want to be rushed. I needed extra time. They gave me until the end of February. I got the work done and went on to write two more of those novels for Scholastic. Since then every other book I’ve written I’ve done in shorter and shorter amounts of time. The last book I wrote, Yoga for Beginnners, I wrote in three weeks. My memoir, Love Sick, however? That’s a whole other story.

Okay, so how long did it take you to write your memoir?

Eight years. Now that doesn’t mean that I sat at my computer every day for eight years straight and wrote the thing. In fact it was quite the opposite. I wrote in spurts. When I first came up with the idea for the memoir, I had just been diagnosed with MS and my mind was flooded with thoughts on how it would affect my life and I knew there had to be a story in there somewhere. So one month after that fateful day at the MS specialist’s office I signed up for a memoir writing class at UCLA extension. I wasn’t expecting much in terms of the instruction (yes, I still have a USC bias), all I wanted was for someone to give me assignments and hold me accountable to a few deadlines and give me some feedback on my writing. What I got was far more than that. Deanne Stillman, the instructor and an accomplished writer herself, gave us amazing prompts and assignments each week and those became the first fifty pages of the memoir. Well, the first fifty in the original version, but that’s beside the point, because also in that class was a writer by the name of Chris Miller. He’s one of the writers behind the movie Animal House. He wrote for the Lampoon and has his own memoir, The Real Animal House. Anyway, the only reason I bring this up is because after we had to read our first assignment aloud in class, Chris came to me afterwards and said. “You’re really funny. You’ve got what it takes to do this.” I was so flattered because I had never thought of myself as funny. In fact, if you meet me in real life I am quiet and am constantly rethinking what I say. But hearing that the man who helped create the iconic movie that is Animal House thought that I had something to offer as a writer was the first bit of encouragement I needed to keep going. From there the book got written in bursts of fifty pages here and there and a thousand different rewrites. And that’s why it took eight years.

How did you come up with the title?

The original title was M.S. to M-R-S. It was a play on words, or letters shall I say. I came up with it when I was twenty-eight and all my friends were getting married around me. I thought my time would come soon and wouldn’t it be clever if I wrote a book about MS and dating and eventually got married, thus turning the M.S. into an M-R-S in front of my name. Of course, years later when I realized this was not going to happen and making life choices based on trying to keep a title of a book was not the best way to go about life, I dropped that title and started searching for something new. I kept a little notes section going in my phone and whenever I had a title idea I would write it in there. For almost a year I did this and nothing was sticking. Then one day I was out for a walk and it hit me. Love Sick. It was the perfect play on words. A few days later I looked it up on urban dictionary and found this: “A deep often depressing feeling of wanting to find love. To be longing for love; to be without a companion to share one’s life with, though it is desired deeply.” And I knew I had made the right decision.

A big part of the struggle you went through in dealing with MS was wondering when you should tell people or if you should tell at all. When did you tell people? And do you have any advice for others dealing with this?

Honestly, up until about five months before Love Sick was about to come out I kept the MS a secret from most people. Except for my family and my close friends, no one knew. Then one day in October, 2015 I saw that Playboy announced that they were getting rid of nudes from their magazine. And I thought, oh my gosh, I have a story that would go perfect with this. There was a chapter that used to be in my book that talked about all the things I wanted to do with my body before it failed me. It was a bucket list of sorts, only I called it my wheelchair list. In this piece of writing I talked about the kinds of things that you would only fantasize about if you were dealing with the fact that one day soon you might end up in a wheelchair or lose control of your body. On that list was posing naked in Playboy. It was a tongue in cheek look at what happens when you face something like MS and you let your imagination run free. Anyway, I pitched the story to XOJane, the online women’s magazine, and they liked it. Two days later that article ran. I posted it to my own Facebook and Instagram pages and watched the comments roll in. People from all stages of my life were commending me for my braveness, and that’s when it occurred to me I wasn’t just showing off another piece of my writing I had literally outed myself to all of my friends that I was dealing with MS. If you had told me years ago to go and do that I would’ve thought you were crazy. I would’ve been scared out of my mind to post something so personal about something that I believed made me so ugly and unlovable. But posting it under the guise of my writing made me realize that I had a story to tell and that I could help others by sharing it. It also helped me to get over any fear I had of telling others about my disease, or publishing my memoir. Now, I don’t recommend to others who might be in my situation that they should go out and shout their health matters to the world, but if you have a story to tell or you believe others can relate then I think you should share it with them. This doesn’t have to be so public either. It can be on a case-by-case basis. Think about who you’re going to tell and why you’re telling them. Is it because you want them to know that you understand a struggle they’re facing? Is it because you need help or support? Or is it because you’re beginning a relationship with them and you don’t want to have secrets? Whatever the reason, make sure it is one that will be satisfied by you telling the person. Because I have learned from experience that if you tell the wrong people and you are not ready for their reaction it can be devastating.

Your story, or life for that matter, has not been easy and yet you have such an optimistic and humorous approach to it. How do you do this?

You know, I wish I could tell you, because if I could I would sell that idea in a heartbeat. I would make myself the next self-help guru and knock Tony Robbins on his feet. What I can tell you is that I am very lucky to have the family I have. My parents have been extremely supportive and they always made me feel like I could accomplish anything I wanted. But also, they kept me grounded. While I was a fairly good student growing up, I had a few bad grades on tests and assignments here and there. I remember the first time I brought a bad grade home. I was scared to death to show my parents. But when I finally mustered up the courage to give it to them, they laughed and hung the big F on the refrigerator. They wanted me to own what I had and not be ashamed. And that’s the lesson: If you can’t own your shortcomings or your failures or the shit life deals you, and laugh through it all then life is going to be quite difficult. So now I own what I’ve got.

Besides writing, yoga seems to be the one thing in your memoir that gives you respite from the disease. Can you talk about this?

Ah, yoga. You would think I’d have come to it after getting the MS diagnosis as a way to stay healthy. But honestly, I found yoga a year prior to receiving my prognosis. It was after a bad break up with a not so nice guy. Our relationship was extremely unhealthy, we ate like crap together and never worked out. I was probably in the worst shape of my life after that breakup. So I decided to make a change and again, own my shit and take responsibility for it. I signed up for a six-week transformation program at my local health spa. It included yoga, time with a nutritionist, another workout plan and acupuncture. It was amazing. I got back in shape and despite the fact that I had always thought yoga was weird and too soft for me, I became addicted to it. At first it was all about the physicality of the poses, being able to do crazy things with my body that I probably hadn’t done since I was a kid on a jungle gym or in gymnastics class, but then it became about far more. It started to seep into other parts of my life and I started to feel so great, and when things started to get more serious with the testing and the doctor’s ideas of what was actually wrong with my body, yoga was there to help me keep a sense of calm. Obviously, if you’ve read my book you know that it’s become a far bigger part of my life, but I don’t want to give anything away. Instead I want to leave you with this, yoga is not always about the poses, if you practice it often enough it becomes a way of life, and for me, nothing has ever rang more true.

Title: Heroine Hearts

Genre: Dark Romance
Release Date: March 28, 2016
HEROIN
hɛrəʊɪn
noun
-a highly addictive analgesic drug derived from morphine, often used illicitly as a narcotic producing euphoria.

HEROINE
hɛrəʊɪn
noun
-a woman admired for her courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.

He saw me as one.
I became addicted to the other.

He saw us as forever.
I saw our love story as bittersweet.

Why?

Simple.

It was all caused by one thing – total, abominable darkness.

But that was what we loved the most.

After all, darkness made these heroine hearts.

**This is a dark romance, due to the subject material within the book. Heroine Heart is advised for readers of a mature nature and not suitable for any readers under 18. Read at your own discretion. Use of tough subject matter includes rape, substance abuse, and violence.**
“What’s wrong?”
His head snaps up with my innocent question.
“Are you serious right about now?” he asks me, his eyes wide and boring into me. “You’re asking me what’s wrong…”
“Yeah,” I say, gulping back against my dry throat. “You can’t be angry about this.”
“I can’t?” he queries, his eyebrows shooting up, his eyes widening.
“I deserve this,” I say, reiterating the words to make them real.
“Come here,” he orders gently, ignoring my plea.
I do as I’m told, moving toward him slowly. It’s as I get close enough, he reaches inside, placing a hand around my left wrist. He pulls my arm out and through the bars, forcing it to become outstretched and on show. His fingers begin to trail across the points which Santiago forced those needles into my veins, getting his immediate response to me on drugs. They left angry pinpricks across my skin, showing exactly where the high started.
“It’s nothing,” I tell him once more, trying my hardest to get my hand back from him.
He scoffs on that response, not letting me go. “What have they been forcing you to take?” He asks, his fingers falling away from the track marks.
“Heroin,” I whisper, my eyes dropping in shame.
“And you want some more?” he asks me, his eyes coming up to meet mine.
I don’t speak, I just bite down on my lip.
Javier’s face darkens once more, but he’s yet to let me go.
“You do don’t you?”
“It’s all I can think about,” I admit, shamefulness filters into my system, positioned right next to the deep rooted craving. “Just something to make me feel better.”
“It won’t help,” he tells me, trying to make me face up to the facts.
“It will… for a moment,” I admonish foolishly. I yank my arm away from him, moving a little further away from the bars. “It’ll help,” I say it more to appease my own fragile mentality, not to force Javier to believe me. “It will, Javier, it’ll make this all better.”
And now he sees the girl who was presented to him on his first day. The girl with the slow burning addiction and the eager need for punishment in order to justice her every sin.
I took everything that was dealt my way as a way of chastisement. My boss and his son had no idea they were helping a criminal get her penalty for being just as bad as everyone else. Now Javier sees it. He’s slowly seeing what Eighteen is really made of.

Soooooo….another book that I am torn on.  While I enjoyed the whole concept and the plot of this book, the characters just fell flat for me.

Kirsty does a good job of keeping you interested in the story but I had a hard time of really grasping onto the characters.  I felt disconnected from them and that really hurt staying in tune with the book. I found myself many times walking away from the book and only continuing on because I wanted to see how the story ended – not really caring about the characters though.

Heroine Hearts is definitely and ugly and dark.  And that’s what made me love the plot – I love books that do not follow the norm or the happy go-lucky.  The cartel life is no peach and Kirsty does a great job of depicting the nastiness – no sunshine here.  There’s a lot of abuse and lots of drug use and all around fuckedupness.

I am sure that I will be in the minority where the book didn’t wow me and that was due to the disconnect with the characters.  Other than that, the concept and plot are great.

Will I read another book by Kirsty – definitely.  Not every book will be for every person.

review

So I am torn on this book.  I liked it but I didn’t love it like I have with my previous LL Books.  However, I also realize that this book has characters who are younger than the other characters she’s written.  So nothing is going to be the same.

Good Girl is definitely a NA novel, if not a tad YA, for me. The characters are slightly juvenile in their choices and are in need of some growing and maturing.  And that’s not necessarily a bad thing either – not every character should have their sh*ttogether so young.  It was refreshing to see how young kids would act when their lives are throw into the spotlight and rumors start to unfold for the whole world to give their opinion on.

I think Lauren wrote her characters well for their age and maturity.  As I said, they needed to grow and learn, which they did as the book progressed.  Do I agree with everything they did, no. But again, it’s the author’s creativity and the book isn’t suppose to be true to life.  It was nice watching them fight a losing battle and see their inner struggles.

My biggest thing was I knew exactly how the book was going to go almost immediately.  So if you are looking for something with some angst and a bit of suspense, don’t expect it from Good Girl.  It’s a very simple and enjoyable read of young adults learning the ways of the world.

Overall, it’s a nice read.  If you have read LL before, do not expect to get the same thing in this book.  While it is still well written, it’s a much easier and breezier read and very simplistic in it’s plot.  Definitely a summer read.

My demise.
review

I really have no idea where in the h*ll to start this review.   Crave Me crushed me.  It wrecked me.  But in the most devastatingly yet beautiful way.

With every book in this series, my heart was racked harder and harder each time.  I swear my heart can’t anymore.  This book gutted me completely – and I didn’t think that was possible after the previous book.

“You’re signing your life away to the devil, and you don’t even fucking realize it.”

As with all her books, Crave Me deals with some really messed up situations and problems that truly exist.  And she doesn’t sugarcoat a damn thing – what is written, is truly what happens in life – the gritty, raw and ugly parts.  Along with the beauty that comes from it.  You can’t find a rainbow without weathering the horrific storm beforehand.

Crave Me is Austin’s story and let me tell you, it’s not a pretty one.  Drugs make you a completely different person and an addict will never see that.  Briggs (Daisy) is the only light in Austin’s life.  She is his reason for finally living again – not just surviving.  But an addict needs to want to heal for themselves, not for anyone else.

“You’re addicted to drugs, Austin.

And I’m addicted to you.

And our love is just as fucking toxic.”

My heart broke for Briggs.  At the young age of 5, her life was wrecked and nothing was never the same.  She carries so much guilt and yet she’s so strong.  The sh*t she goes through would break most people.  Yet she still moved forward and tried to find the beauty in everything around her.

Austin and Briggs story will rip you apart.  You will see all their love and passion for one another along with their destruction, suffering and pain.  These two go through a lot – highs, lows and everything in between.   I felt every emotion that Austin and Briggs felt, there is no way I couldn’t.  Monica wrote a heartbreakingly beautiful story.   This is one story that you will find yourself craving and not being able to walk from til you finished it.

Colors blended together making it hard to focus on one thing. I blinked a few times
and just like that…
I saw her face.
As if she was standing right in front of me.
Smiling.
Happy.
Laughing.
My whole world…
My girl.
I felt my lips curl up slightly at the vision as I reached out for her. Wanting
to touch her, needing to hold her, yearning to kiss her. Craving, God, craving
to fucking love her.
“I’m sorry,” I murmured out loud to no one but the illusion of my drug-infested
mind. “I’m so fucking sorry,” I repeated repentantly, longing for her to
believe me.
Aching for her to love me again like she used to.
I don’t know how long I sat there, staring at her beautiful face before my eyes,
subconsciously rubbing the tattooed key that was placed over my heart. I
couldn’t take it anymore, and the desire won over the haze.
It was too powerful.
It was too vivid.
I grabbed my phone. “Baby,” I said into the speaker. The ringing quickly
followed, going straight to voicemail. I hung up and tried again. “Baby,” I
urged with desperation in my tone.
Still nothing.
I tried again and again and again.
I would try until the end of time if that’s what it took for her to answer.
To talk to me.
To save me.
To crave me.
Time just seemed to standstill, as my life slowly played out in front of me. Trying
to balance in between the light and the darkness when all I could see was gray.
“What?!” she screamed into the phone, finally answering after I don’t know how many
failed attempts. “What the hell do you want now?”
“Mi cielo.” I breathed a sigh of relief.
She ignored my term of endearment. I hadn’t called her that in such a long time.
My heaven.
“What do you want, Austin? Why are you calling me? We’re over! I can’t do this
anymore!”
I shut my eyes and let my mind wonder, allowing it to go to another place in time
where she didn’t hate me.
“I remember the first time I made you smile,” I chuckled, as if it had just
happened.
My nerves were on fire. The mere sound of her breathing through the phone was too
intense for me. I licked my lips, my mouth suddenly dry.
“I remember when you used to smile just for me. Do you remember, baby? Do you
remember what my love feels like?”
I heard her faintly breathing.
“Do you remember my hands on you? My lips? My tongue? The first time I made you
come with my mouth? Do you remember all the times since? Tell me I’m not
forgotten. Tell me you remember, baby.”
Silence.
“I love you, Briggs. I love you so fucking much. You’re killing me, don’t you see
that? I’m dying without you.”
“No, Austin. You were dying with me,” she rasped, knowing that it killed her to say
that.
“The first time I saw your face, I thought to myself, damn, this beautiful girl is
goin’ to be the death of me. You were perfect in every way. I was a cocky son
of a bitch who needed you then, as much as I need you now.”
More silence.
“I had a dream about you, baby. I always fucking dream about you. In my dream you
had a ring on your finger. A ring I put there. You belonged to me. Only mine.
Forever fucking mine. You were pregnant, Briggs. You looked so goddamn happy. I
saw light at the end of the tunnel for the first time in years.”
She sniffled into the phone.
“I made love to you. Slow, just the way you love. Taking my time to touch every
last inch of your body. Memorizing every last bit of you. Making you come until
you begged me to stop. I didn’t.”
“I can’t—” she tried to interject, but I didn’t let up.
“I kissed your stomach. Our baby. Letting my lips linger there, whispering sweet
lullabies, letting her know daddy will always be there. Baby, it was so real.
For a second I gave you the one thing you so desperately wanted, the one thing
I can’t give you.”

About DEAR HEART, I HATE YOU:

I didn’t plan on him.

Or for him.

Or anything that had to do with Cal Donovan from Boston.

Meeting him had been a complete and utter surprise, taking me one hundred percent off guard. I met new people every single day in my line of work and none of them affected me. Wasn’t that the way of things though? You could meet a thousand people and they’d all mean nothing to you. But then you’d meet that one and they suddenly meant everything.

I couldn’t put this book down after I started it.  Even though I had a pretty good idea of how the book would end, I needed to know how they got there and everything in between.

I was sucked into Jules and Cal’s story from the get-go.  They are both workaholics and had the determination to get where they wanted to be in their jobs and not allowing the opposite sex get in the way of that.

When Jules and Cal meet other each in a bar during a conference she is attending, they hit things off.  But both are smart about their expectations and don’t try to read further into it.  They try to maintain friends and keep in touch over text and calls when Jules returns homes to California.

I loved how real and honest this story was.  It felt like I was watching a movie based off a true story play out in front of me.  Both of their reactions were natural and can be easily relatable.  Jules actions were no surprised when she started thinking with her heart and not using her head like she had before Cal.  And Cal did things that I wasn’t really surprised at – I do have to say I thought he was a bit more mature to do what he did, but all men have their “douche canoe” moments in life.

Jenn always knows how to make you feel everything in her books.  There is no way around it.  Her writing and characters draw you in and you feel like you are right there.  Another fantastic hit for Jenn!

CAL’S POV
I was currently sitting at a table with my hand on Jules’s thigh, breaking my number-one rule: No women.
Work was too damn important to me, and women were a distraction. Even the best ones seemed to turn into something else once we started dating, taking on personality traits that hadn’t been there when we first met. They were good at hiding the parts of them they didn’t want you to see until just the right time. And while I understood that most women needed things from a relationship that were seemingly normal, like my time and attention, I couldn’t give it to them.
That was what led me to formulate my life plan in the first place—too many clingy, needy women, and my realization that I wasn’t ready for any of that yet. My plan was solid and ladies didn’t factor into it; at least, not for another three or so years. Yes, I even had a timeline.
Women had their own timelines. They wanted to be married by a certain age, have two point five kids and a house by another. The only problem was my timeline and theirs tended to be off by several years. I needed two more years to make partner within my firm, another six months or so to get settled into the role, and then—and only then—could women possibly come back into the equation, depending on what else I was involved in by that point.
Coldly categorizing my life into a series of boxes I wanted to check off wasn’t a romantic notion, but my career had nothing to do with romance and everything to do with reality. I wanted to be firmly rooted in it before allowing myself to be distracted by a relationship.
But right now, with my hand touching Jules’s thigh, my brain wasn’t the least bit involved, and I wasn’t sure what was real at this point. She was real. Her long blond hair and fierce green eyes, those were real.

J Sterling - headshotAbout J. Sterling:

I got fired from my last job.

It’s true.

I know you’re sitting there thinking, “Jenn, how could anyone in their right mind fire someone like you?” And I’d love to give you a good reason, but the truth is that sometimes being all sorts of awesome isn’t fun for other people. They don’t always tend to like it. lol

So I picked my pride off the floor, bought a laptop and started writing my first book. And you know what I realized? Writing stories that meant something to me was a million times better than working my ass off for someone who didn’t really care about anything other than the bottom line.

My soul has never felt more satisfied.

My heart has never been more full.

I’ve never worked so hard in my life, but I love every second of it. I truly do.

It is SO worth it.

All of it.

Every moment.

The journey it took to get to this point- I wouldn’t change a thing.

Stout by Georgia Cates….Review Tour

Stout_Release_Day_Banner_1

Stout Cover Art_SmallerCraft beer and the sexy men who brew it.

A beautiful neighbor. A complete stranger. That’s all she was when I moved in next door.

Adelyn Maxwell is my neighbor but she’s no girl next door. The more I come to know her, the more I discover she’s a good girl with a lovely dark side. And maybe I don’t want her to stay on her side of the fence.

I want to disturb the rhythm of her pulse.

I want to see the way her hair spills on the bed when she lies beneath me.

I want her to teach me the dirty pretty things she desires behind closed doors. And she does.

But mostly I want to leave my mark on the most intimate, untouched part of her body. Her heart.

A seemingly insignificant intersection of our lives neither of us recalls suddenly becomes a pivotal moment in our future. We aren’t strangers at all. And our paths aren’t crossing for the first time.

These twists and turns of fate will become one of two things: a wrecking ball to tear us apart or the connection to bond us together forever.

Oliver Thorn’s POV

“Control. And how I feel when you exert your strength over me. Domination. Power. Control. All of it turns me the fuck on.”
“Why?”
“There’s something primal and exhilarating about a man who takes complete control in the bedroom. That’s what it’s about for me. I want to feel desire. Real desire. I need a man who will grab me and make me feel small and vulnerable and feminine. Without hurting me.”
She releases my hands and sits upright, still mounted on top of me. “Outside of the bedroom, it’s all a level playing field. I’m an independent woman, and I control everything in my life. But in the bedroom . . . I want to be controlled by a strong man.”
“And choked.”
“I need an alpha male. I crave the dominance and show of strength he has over me.” She reaches for my hands and intertwines our fingers. “You’re the first man I’ve trusted in years. I couldn’t have let anyone else put their hands on me that way. It had to be you.” She releases my hands and leans over me, propping on her lower arms, but her hands grasp my face. She presses a soft, closemouthed kiss on my lips. “Only you, Thorn.”
She wants an alpha. A controller. A choker.
God help me, I like what I just did to her. I want to do it again. And that’s totally fucked up.
I spent my childhood being controlled, dominated, choked. What kind of person does it make me if I do those things to her? Even if it’s what she wants?
“I can’t, Max.”
She presses her forehead to mine. “You can. You did.” I did. And it was wrong.
So. Fucking. Wrong.
“But not again.”
“I saw your face. You liked my submission. You liked putting your hand on me like that. You weren’t repulsed. And in those few moments when you held my life in your hands, I belonged to you. I knew it. You knew it. And you liked it.”

review

Stout is the second installment in the Lovibond series but each can be read as a standalone.  Stout is Oliver’s (Stout) story.  We met him in Tap, he’s Lawry’sbrother and business partner with Tap.

Oliver meets Adelyn when he moves next door to her and they form an instant friendship.  They are both hesitant to become more than friends even though they both feel something more.  They’ve been betrayed in the past and both have their walls for their own protection.

I really enjoyed watching Oliver and Adelyn grow into stronger people, not just together, but individually.  Adelyn has a really rough past with relationships but the way Oliver handled it and stood by her, spoke volumes.  There were a few surprises thrown into this story that I did not see coming and I think both Oliver and Adelyn dealt with those perfectly and naturally.

Georgia did a great job of writing a story that not only had you rooting for the characters but felt so real too.  The interactions between everyone was just another added bonus to this story and helped keep the book moving at a great pace.

I look forward to reading the next installment in this series and see what Georgia brings us next!

Georgia resides in rural Mississippi with her wonderful husband, Jeff, and their two beautiful daughters. She spent fourteen years as a labor and delivery nurse before she decided to pursue her dream of becoming an author and hasn’t looked back yet.

When she’s not writing, she’s thinking about writing. When she’s being domestic, she’s listening to her iPod and visualizing scenes for her current work in progress. Every story coming from her always has a song to inspire it.

BLURB:
I make my living as a hustler, and I’m great at it.
I don’t have a single tell and use that to my advantage to manipulate any situation.
I’ve always known what a person is about to do before they’ve even decided.

That is, until I met Nell.
I can’t get a read on her, and what’s worse, she doesn’t want anything to do with me.
Which only makes me want her more.

Now I’m in for the hardest hustle of my life.
Somehow I have to convince Nell that she belongs with me.
Good thing I’m always up for a challenge.

review

Like most of us, I am always a tad hesitant to read any book that is written by two authors, even if I love books by both those authors. You never know how those two authors are going to blend their talents and make sure that the book is smooth. Well Meghan and Jessica have done just that – I can’t tell who wrote what and this book was very well written.

Hustler is a romantic comedy with lots of hotness added in. Gavin and Nell are two extremely strong characters yet they are extremely stubborn and set in their ways. Gavin is the top rated poker player and wants to maintain that status. He’s a hustler both at the tables and in the bedroom. Nell is trying to live her dreams but since she’s arrived in Vegas three years ago, she’s been stuck waitressing at the poker tables, barley making ends meet.

But Gavin meets his match when he comes across Nell. She refuses to fall for his playboy charm and will give him a run for his money at any chance she can get. These two are combustible anytime they are in the same room together. But you can’t deny the chemistry that makes the air sizzle.

Meghan and Jessica have written a very hilarious, steamy and somewhat angsty read. And those secondary characters – woah!! I can’t wait to see what happens there – I definitely see a few more books in the future.

Bravo on writing a seamless story. The pace of this book is perfect and everything just flows together. I am looking forward to reading more from these two in the future – both together and by themselves. 🙂

About the Authors:
Born in New York and raised in Southern California, Meghan has grown into a sassy, peanut butter eating, blonde haired swearing, animal hoarding lady. She is known to bust out and dance if “It’s Raining Men” starts beating through the air and heaven forbid you get a margarita in her, protect your legs because they may be humped.
Once she started commuting for an hour and twenty minutes every day to work for three years, she began to have conversations play in her head, real life, deep male voices and dainty lady coos kind of conversations. Perturbed and confused, she decided to either see a therapist about the hot and steamy voices running through her head or start writing them down. She decided to go with the cheaper option and started writing… enter her first novel, Caught Looking.
Now you can find the spicy, most definitely on the border of lunacy, kind of crazy lady residing in Colorado with the love of her life and her five, furry four legged children, hiking a trail or hiding behind shelves at grocery stores, wondering what kind of lube the nervous stranger will bring home to his wife. Oh and she loves a good boob squeeze!
Find me on Goodreads:
Jessica was born and raised in Texas–where she’ll stay because she claims the cost of living in Texas excuses the god-awful weather. She is first and foremost a wife and mother. Because of those two things, she’s also a self proclaimed wino and coffee addict.

She’s always been and avid lover of all types of books, but romances are her main favorites.
Jessica’s husband likes to say reading is her obsession, but she likes to call it her passion…there’s a difference.
