Personal Apocalypse: A World Without End novel

Josiah grew up in a dying world. The Holdout survived, but when you are the son of Sylvia Cragen, you give up delusions early. He knew that they would die bloody–it wasn’t a matter of if. Only when.
Parker shouldn’t be alive. He should have died long before scouts from the Last Holdout rescued him. And he knows better than to believe that sailing away from the safety of the Holdout is a good idea.
Now, without the Holdout to protect them, all of his nightmares are coming true. Josiah is just crazy enough to believe that a fresh start is a good thing. But Parker has lived as prey, hunted by zombies and survivors before–and he knows that no one really survives. In the wild, zombie claimed world outside the walls of safety, there is only the dead walking.

EXCERPT REVEAL:

I was seven when I realized that the world wasn’t always broken. That the way we live isn’t how it’s always been.
I beat the shit out of the little asshole who broke that news to me, and then ran to the Doc’s. Because she was always good for the truth.
Even when the truth was ugly as fuck.
I learned three things that day and it stuck with me, over the eleven years since.
Dusty Pate was fucking bully.
Punching someone in the nose is a learned skill set.
And the truth is better than a lie. Even when it’s ugly.
That thought more than any resounds through me as I stand on the rocking deck of a nameless boat in the middle of a nameless ocean, staring at a nameless coast.
Not really. All of them have names. But none of them matter and there’s no one left alive to give a fuck, so nameless works just as well.
“what do you think?”
I tilt my head just a little as Parker comes up behind me, reaching over my shoulder for my binoculars. He fits there, as natural as breathing, as familiar as the gun on my hip and the knife strapped to my back.
“I think we don’t have a lot of choices.”
He mutters a curse and from below, it’s echoed in a shrill furious voice.
“Any change in the princess?” I ask, my voice a low drawl.
Parker doesn’t take the bait. He’s still watching the coast and I take a moment to drink him in.
He’s still pale, even after the time on the boat, a kind of creamy paleness that begs to be dirtied. His straight black hair hanging in his dark eyes, and he’s tense. Coiled like a spring that’s waiting to burst, full of nervous energy that has been forced down and contained.
“No sign,” he murmurs. “We should go soon.”
I nod.
The truth is—I don’t like unknowns. I can patrol up and down the south eastern seaboard, in and around the deadzone.
I’ve built my name on that. On my cold assessments and willingness to defend the Holdout.
But I hate walking in blind. And I hate it most when Parker is with me.

Again by Elizabeth Reyes…. Read-A-Long

again-day2

What happened in chapter 11 – chapter 15?:

Sydney is jealous of Sly’s relationship with Sydney, and how much time he’s taking up that she used to spend with him, so he distracts himself with a movie star who lives in their building, Scarlet. He feels a little bit bad about using her as a distraction, but it’s sort of a mutual relationship.

One night Sydney gets a call from his mother in Arizona – there was a smaller fire in her garage. He leaves to immediately get on a plane, but he runs into Scarlet in the building when he’s leaving – she’s having a melt down over her mother publishing a tell-all about her life, so he invites her to come with him to see his mother.

They take off without a word, and Emi only finds out where he is and who he’s with from the paparazzi pictures of them at the airport.

Lynn calls Sydney and confronts him about Emi. She wants to know if he’s only seeing Scarlet because Emi is seeing Sly. Sydney tells her that Scarlet coming to see his mom with him was totally unplanned and they end up fighting about his feelings for Emi. Lynn thinks he should go for it, but he insists they’re too different and at entirely different points in their lives, with him looking to settle down and her being so much younger than him.

When Sydney gets back from Arizona, he and Emi get into a fight about him not telling her where he was going and not inviting her to go with him. He apologizes and tries to make plans with her for the weekend, but she’s flying out to Chicago for the weekend to be with Sly.

Their birthdays are fast approaching, and Sydney mentions to Emi that he’s considering going to Cape Cod with Scarlet for his birthday. She gets upset because they had been planning to celebrate their birthdays together, so he decides to stay and take her out drinking for her 21st birthday.

Emi is a lightweight and she gets wasted the night of their birthday celebrations. He takes her home and she does a strip tease, telling him that he loves her and she begs him to stay with her that night. He has trouble resisting her, but he doesn’t want take advantage of her drunken state.

Favourite Quotes:

“As much as Sydney hated to admit it, there were no two ways around it. Sly Sabian was a good guy.”

“Congratulations. You’ve done it again. You’ve fallen for your best friend.”

“What he had to admit after that day was that he didn’t just enjoy Em’s company. He craved it.”

“You have very suckable lips.”

Discussion Question:

  • Why do you think Sydney didn’t tell Emi when he left to see his mom?

againAbout AGAIN

No regrets. Just lessons learned.

Having lived through the torment of losing his first love to someone else–all because he never spoke up–Sydney Maricopa vowed never to repeat that mistake again.

So when he finally admits he’s fallen for his new best friend, he refuses to lose her too, especially once he realizes his feelings for her might be requited. There’s only one problem.

Her perfect boyfriend.

Still, Sydney’s determined to fight for the girl he loves this time. He has what it takes to go up against Mr. Perfect. Most importantly, he and his new best friend have something even her boyfriend can’t compete with–their profound connection. One he intends to use to win her over.

Until he finds out what she’d be giving up if she chooses Sydney.

Something no one should ever give up. Would he dream of selfishly asking her to? Or should he do the honorable thing and sacrifice his own happiness for hers? Allow the girl he loves to sail off into the sunset with another man as he stands back and watches in agony . . . again?

review

I truly, truly enjoyed reading this book. It has been quite some time since I have read a book by Elizabeth Reyes (not on purpose). And this book just brought back all the reasons why I love reading her books. I will definitely be going back and reading books 2 and 3 in this series.

Again is Sydney and Emi’s story. Sydney is Sarah’s best friend from way back and I am so happy that he got his own book. Emi is part of the Moreno/Romero in an extended way. These two are living in the same building and don’t realize how close they really are til a family gathering.

They develop a beautiful friendship, one that neither expected due to not only their age differences but where they are in their lives. But their friendship grows and becomes one that neither can live without. That makes things extremely difficult when Emi becomes serious with Sly and he is not thrilled that her best friend is a guy. Unfortunately, that is the only obstacle or problem that Emi and Sydney face. I won’t give away much more about the plot or the storyline. Just know that this is one story where you are thrown a few curve balls at very unexpected times.

Elizabeth does a fantastic job of making this story so real and very relatable. The banter between all the characters is amazing. There isn’t one instance that seems too far fetched. The entire story moves at the perfect pace and keeps you entertained. There were a few scenes where I found myself having to put the book down because I was overcome with emotions and had to get myself together before continuing. But I found myself smiling a lot in this book.

Even if you have never read any of the previous books in this series or her other series, you will still thoroughly enjoy this book. Elizabeth does a fantastic job of giving each of the characters a brief overview of how they all intertwine and it doesn’t deter from the story line.

I am looking forward to reading more from Elizabeth in the future!

More than a little, actually, but that’s the problem. Kori won’t admit her own desires. She’s afraid of him and what he has to offer. Luckily for her, helping patients face their fears is one of his specialties.

She’s just found a place where she can belong. Another failed relationship is the last thing she needs. It’s better to guard her heart and let Kai think she’s frightened of his dark, dominant nature.

“How did everyone else get here?”

“My brother seems to be stalking me and Case came over because he was worried about you. Apparently he knew about someone vandalizing your car.”

That was news to her. “He did? I didn’t tell him.”

“Who did you tell?” The question came out with an edge of irritation.

“Sarah and Mia. I decided to wait until this morning to call someone because it was late last night.” And I’d been trying to avoid you only to end up having the best sleep of my life because I was wrapped around you. Yeah, she wasn’t going to say that.

“How about the police? Were you going to call them? If you’re going to make an insurance claim, you’ll need a police report. Or are you going to claim that your tires died of natural causes?”

She held her hands up, attempting to placate him. Why did her room seem so much smaller when he was in it? It was a good-sized room, but Kai took up all the space. “You’re right. I should have called last night, but I was tired and I wanted to get home and get in bed.”

His gorgeous eyes narrowed. “You weren’t in bed. You were sitting up with your friends drinking wine. Try again.”

“Kai, what’s going on here? It’s a couple of tires.”

“You were supposed to call me if you got in trouble.”

“I wasn’t really in…” What was she doing? Before yesterday she would never have lied to Kai. Not right to his face. “I was nervous about seeing you after the scene.”

“Finally some honesty. I’ll handle it. I’ll deal with the police and get you what you need for your insurance. The boys from McKay-Taggart will set up some discreet surveillance cameras around our parking lot.”

There was a reason they didn’t have that. “I thought you didn’t want the patients to feel like they were walking into a secure zone.”

Some of them had serious issues with people watching them. They dealt with a lot of PTSD patients.

“I will deal with them. Your safety is more important. Now turn around, pull your pants down and place your palms flat on the bed. It’s a count of thirty.”

She could actually feel her womb spasm. “What?”

Nothing about his face or stance conveyed that he was anything but dead serious. “This was a condition of your employment. It has been from the beginning.”

If she wasn’t careful her damn jaw was going to hit the floor. “I remember the conditions of my employment. Are you saying if I’d been late and hadn’t called, you would have spanked me?”

“I suppose we should be happy you’re a very prompt girl. And you tend to be good about calling. We’ll never know. What I do know is that after last night, I will definitely spank you and you’ll enjoy it. You might start showing up late just so you can walk into my office and present that juicy ass to me.” He moved in front of her, staring down at her with heat in his eyes. “I want you to think before you tell me no. I want you to question which side of the Kori I know is going to win this battle. Is it the funny, happy, brave Kori who never stands down from a challenge, or the one who’s denied herself for years because some idiot asshole Dom made her feel small. I won’t ever make you feel small. My job in life will be to lift you up, to help you be strong.”

His words cut through her. “What are you saying, Kai? Is this about you being my boss or acting as my play partner?”

She thought they’d worked it out last night.

His hands cupped her cheeks, forcing her to look up at him. “I’m acting as your Dom, Kori, and you know it. You can pretend all you like. You can call it whatever you want to, but you know how this ends. This ends with you and me.”

She shook her head. “Kai, yesterday we were nothing more than friends.”

“Yesterday I didn’t understand you. Today I do, and I want you more than I want my next fucking breath. I’ll go slow. I’ll give you all the time you need to wrap that gorgeous brain around the idea. I’ll be indulgent as hell with the exception of two things.”

“Do I dare ask?”

“You play with me and only me. I won’t play with anyone but you. And when something goes wrong, you call me. You give me the chance to protect you, to shelter you.”

“I thought we agreed to keep it to the club.”

“I didn’t agree to that and why should we?” He sounded so reasonable. “What does scared Kori say?”

“Scared Kori thinks this is all moving too fast, but she’s kind of drowned out by Wants to Kiss You Kori.”

His lips curled up in the sweetest smile. “I know who I’m voting for. Come on, baby. We’ve been dancing around this since the day we met. I’ve put up stupid boundaries because I was scared, too. I’ve pushed away a lot of good in my life because I couldn’t trust it. I cuddled you last night and all I could think about was the fact that I trust you. Of all the people in the world, I trust you most. I want to be with you. When I’m with you I’m not lonely.”

The man knew exactly what to say to shut Scared Kori up. When she was with him, she didn’t feel the hole in her soul the way she did before. Somehow even simply being friends with the man had filled her in a way no one had before. Was she going to let him go because Morgan had been a giant massive asshole?

If he hadn’t been, she wouldn’t have found Kai.

She went on her toes before she could talk herself out of it and brushed her lips against his. Warm, soft. Those lips were plump and sensual and he somehow made them masculine. They were like the rest of Kai. Utterly beautiful and on someone else perhaps a bit feminine, but Kai was all man.

He was still as she kissed him, her lips moving softly over his. It wouldn’t last long. He was giving her this time. He would take over and her whole body thrilled at the idea. He was right. They couldn’t go back after last night. They’d connected in such an intimate way that she didn’t want to. Yes, she was still afraid, but this man was worth the risk.

When she eased back down, he was smiling at her. “Do you know how long I’ve waited for you to kiss me?”

“Probably since last night.”

His hands smoothed back her hair, making her feel so wanted and cared for. “Since the day I met you.”

OOF FOR WEB - Copy*** Upper New Adult Spinoff Standalone to the USA Today Bestselling Novel, Under the Influence***

“Shhhh, Cassandra, it’s our little secret.”

Secrets are stubborn things when they refuse to remain hidden. They tear through your soul, clawing and lashing until the pain becomes so unbearable, you’re left no choice but to silently scream your agony. No one hears you, of course. You smile on the outside and drift through life as though your mind is at peace, but all the while, you remain your own tortured prisoner. Sealed inside the darkened, soundproof room of your conscience, deafening cries echo as you plead for someone to unlock the door and release you from your nightmares. And eventually, when no one comes, you find ways to cope. To dull the suffering the only way you know how.

But what happens when you’ve become so numb, when everything around you has become so blurred, that you begin to lose focus on the saving grace standing directly in front of you? When you’ve anesthetized yourself to the point of losing consciousness, forced to watch as his once solid image fades away, lost to your reach in the haze as it smothers you?

What do you do then?

You fight. You heal. Then you bring him back.

Well, my name is Cassie Cooper, and it’s time.

No more secrets.

This is my story.

***WARNING – The subject matter of this novel centers around the psychological effects due to sexual abuse experienced during childhood. For this reason, as well as sexual situations, language, and adult themes, suggested reading age is 17+.***

Only twenty-three years old, and I’m so goddamn tired.

I used to be so much stronger. I somehow kept the voices at bay, the memories locked away safely, contained within the confines of my mind. But with each passing day, I feel the glow of my once-luminous strength fading. Darkness encases me now, bowing the walls of protection I put into place years ago. My past is an ever-present nightmare, repeatedly tapping, slowly fracturing the window of my sanity.

I have no doubt that it’s only a matter of time before the glass finally breaks. Blackness will eventually seep through its cracks and deliver me from the safety of my façade into a reality that will destroy me.

My reality.

I’ve done my part. I’ve kept the secrets thrust upon me with dedicated believability. My portrayal of who I am has become a blurred, hazy version of the once very distinct Cassie Cooper.

I read an ungodly amount of trashy romance novels.

I’m the overtly sexual and foul-mouthed friend who will say anything to get a laugh.

And I have exactly zero fucks to give to what anyone else thinks about my actions.

But the reality, the actuality, is this:

I read obsessively to escape my own world. To live the dreams of others when, for so long, the reoccurrence of my nightmares has been my reality. I read to fall in love and find a happily ever after, even if it is purely imagined. With each story I read, I’m able to live and love vicariously through the characters in my books. It’s the only plausible way for me to survive.

I threw away my virginity at the age of thirteen just to prove something. And when I found that proof, that vindication I was looking for, I sought it every chance I could. Sex is about control for me. Nothing more. The act will never be about making love, like it is for the heroines in my books. I will never be granted the beauty of that gift.

I use humor as a form of avoidance. I draw upon laughter to block the pain. And I smile to mask the agony of the eight-year-old soul who weeps within me.

And the fucks . . . well, that’s not entirely accurate either.

I have given two to be exact: One to my best friend of seventeen years. She knows nothing of my past, and although she so willingly disclosed the horrors of hers, mine remains hidden for no other reason than to avoid the pity she would undoubtedly cast my way if I were to ever tell her. I don’t want her pity. I would sooner die than have her look at me in any other way than with pride.

The other died with the person to whom it was given. Anthony “Rat” Marchione. He was my one allowance of naïveté. The one person I actually wanted to touch me, to hold me, to love me. He was going to rescue me from my brokenness as though I were a character in one of my books. Young and senseless, I thought he was to be my eventual happily ever after, but tragically, he was murdered five years ago.

Black coldness waits in vain to leech the void where his once beautiful existence filled the pieces of my irrevocably shattered heart. Where he temporarily healed the hurt of the innocent child and quieted the voices that tormented her.

He’s gone now. I’ve accepted that. And in turn, I have relinquished all dreams associated with finding the light at the end of this miserable tunnel.

I will keep trudging through this life . . . this sentence handed to me for someone else’s crime, my payment shackled by secrets and weighted with lies. I will continue to do so with the same fraudulent smile on my lips and play the part of the strong heroine so convincingly, that even I believe it.

It’s only a matter of time before my fictional strength wears out—when I’m no longer hidden safely inside my protective blur—and I have to face the very real and lucid image of my past.

But until that time comes, I’ll do all I can do.

All I have ever done.

I will pretend.

One Day Soon by A. Meredith Walters….Release Blitz

ODS available now graphic 3

OneDaySoon AmazonHe found me in blood and tears.

I stayed with him through darkness and fire.

We loved each other in the moment between innocence and bitter truth.

We were the kids easily ignored, who grew into adults we hardly knew.

We weren’t meant to last forever. And we didn’t.

He ran away.

I tried to move on.

Yet I never stopped thinking about the boy who had fought to keep me alive in a world that would have swallowed me whole. He was the past that I buried, but never forgot.

Until the day I found him again, years after believing I had lost him forever.

And in cold, resentful eyes, I saw the heart of the man who had been everything when I had nothing at all. So I vowed to hold onto the second chance that was stolen from the children we had been.

Sometimes fate is ugly. Life can be twisted.

And who we are can be ruined by who we once were.

For two people who had survived so much, we would have to learn how to hold on before we were forced to let go.

“Maybe I should tell you a story. It’s been a long time since I’ve done that. You always liked when I made up dumb stuff to get you to smile.” I chuckled. “The more improbable the better, right? So let me think of something completely unrealistic.”

I sniffled, wiping my wet cheeks. I hadn’t realized I was crying.

“Once upon a time there was a sad, lonely boy who was actually a forgotten prince. No one knew that he was rich and powerful and had a family that was searching for him.” I smiled sadly, wishing, more than anything, that this particular story had been true.

“One day he met a girl who swore that she would help him get back home to the castle. They fell in love. The prince wanted her to come back to the castle with him so they could live there together. They fought dragons and defeated ogres. They ran from witches and swam through oceans. And finally they found the castle. The prince’s family welcomed him home and he married his princess. And they lived happily ever after.”

I rested my forehead on the back of his hand, hating how cold his skin was. “You always loved your fairytales,” I mused, wishing he had been able to find his.

The hand in mine stirred and I bolted upright. Yoss’s face was contorted in pain, his eyes fluttering.

I got to my feet and reached for the call button so I could alert the nurse that something was wrong.

Then he let out a breath and his eyes opened. They were clouded and confused as they darted around the room, taking everything in.

I was rooted to the spot, not moving. He frowned and then winced when he tried to sit up.

“Uh, you shouldn’t do that. Take it easy,” I instructed, my voice shaking.

Then the wild, green eyes found me. There was no immediate recognition and I felt the crushing weight of disappointment.

He doesn’t know who I am.

His eyes were cold. So cold. Dead. He groaned as he lifted his hand to his face, touching the bandaged skin.

“Let me call the nurse. Your doctor will want to see you now that you’re awake—”

“Where am I?” he asked, his voice rough and hard.

It was a voice I had heard a million times in my dreams.

A voice I never thought I’d hear again. Not in real life.

“You’re at Lupton Memorial Hospital. You were brought in last night.” I didn’t give him any more details. I wasn’t sure he was ready for all that. He had just gained consciousness after all.

“The hospital,” he repeated. He struggled to sit up and hissed in pain at the effort.

“Seriously, you should wait and let me call the nurse—”

His eyes flashed in my direction and the cloud of confusion lifted as he speared me with a look that I felt in my bones.

Recognition.

His eyes widened and his mouth parted in disbelief.

I wanted to say something—anything—but my tongue felt frozen behind my teeth.

Yoss shook his head and closed his eyes. He let out a noise that sounded a lot like a sob and my heart knew the sound of pain when it heard it.

When he opened his eyes again, they were wet. Long, dark lashes spikey with tears that refused to fall.

A hundred memories arched between us. A thousand words spoken softly in the dark.

A dozen promises never kept.

His lips curved upwards into the shadow of a smile that I remembered and loved so much.

“Imi,” he whispered.

I nodded, still otherwise paralyzed.

“Imi,” he said again, a tear traveled the length of his cheek and dripped off his chin.

“It’s me, Yoss,” I said finally, forcing myself to speak.

Our eyes met. They held.

They clung and they devastated.

Fifteen years had passed but none of that mattered.

In that instant we were kids again. Remembering a time when, to each other, we were everything.

Suspicious Minds by Elizabeth Reyes….Blitz & Read-A-Long

breaking-day3

What happened in chapter 11 – chapter 15?:

Olivia confesses to Lorenzo her conversation with Margie, and tells him everything that happened with Jay, including the recent texts that’s she ignored. Olivia ends up blocking Jay on everything – her phone, e-mail, all of her social media.

Lorenzo is out golfing with Olivia’s brothers when they start talking about Olivia’s boss, Elton Hollingsworth. Olivia had briefly mentioned him to Lorenzo before, saying he was a silent partner and she just owed him money for the truck. But her brothers don’t like him and they confront Olivia about still having any sort of contact with him.

Knowing that they were talking about him to Lorenzo, Olivia decides to tell Lorenzo the whole truth about Elton and the offers he’s made her in the past, exchanging sex to remove some of her debt. Lorenzo explains to her that it’s sexual harassment and inappropriate, and Olivia agrees to ask Elton to stop coming by the truck and inviting to her lunch when he doesn’t ask any of the other girls he works with.

One day Elton shows up with a puppy – the kind of dog she’s always wanted to have. He tells her it’s a no strings attached puppy, and he paid for it several months ago and she should have it anyway.

Then Jay shows up. Margie is missing.

Not knowing anything about what happened that day with Elton and Jay, Lorenzo accepts a temporary deployment – he’ll only be gone for a couple of days.

Favourite Quotes:

“I’m not in the habit of going out with anyone more than once if I’m not serious.”

“I’m beginning to think you just might be perfect.”

Discussion Questions:

  • Do you think Olivia should have rejected the dog from Elton?

He pulled back a little, resting his forehead on mine to
look into my eyes. To cripple me in ways I never thought possible. There was a
hunger in his glare that I couldn’t quite place, he wasn’t even touching me and
yet I still felt him all over. Both of us were panting, our breathing mirroring
one another’s, our hearts escalating higher and higher and beating beside each
other.
So intense.
So consuming.
So mind-blowing.
In that second, in that minute, in that hour… I wanted him.
I wanted his touch, I wanted his kiss, I wanted his taste, I
wanted all his movements, all his adoration and his love, all his devotion, his
laugh, his smile, everything, anything.
Every. Last. Part.
Him.
I reached for the front of his shirt, unbuttoning it and
pulling it away from his body and he let me. I touched the pulse of his neck,
down to his heart, passed his taut abs until I reached his belt. The warmth and
velvetiness of his skin made my sex clench and my stomach flutter. The
butterfly feeling never got old. It was becoming one of my favorite feelings.
A feeling only he could ignite in me.
I gasped when he unexpectedly gripped my hand, stopping me.
“Are you sure?” he huskily rasped, my favorite sound in the
world.
Before I could assure him, tell him what I felt so deeply in
my heart, tell him how much he meant to me, how much I wanted to be his and
only his, how much I wanted him to undo me.
Own me.
He hoarsely murmured against my lips, “Suga’ once I start
there will be no going back. I won’t stop until I’ve explored every last inch
of your flesh… until I’m etched so far into your heart that you’ll never be
able to touch your skin and not feel me.”
With wide eyes I swallowed hard and breathed out, “Promise?”
“Always.”
He let go of my hand and I unclasped his belt, next were his
slacks, pulling them apart and lowering the zipper. Before I could touch him
where I really wanted to, where I had been craving since the second I saw him
in his black tuxedo, he slapped my hand away.
“This isn’t about me. This is about you.”
His gaze set me on fire, my heart kicked into overdrive. I loved
having him look at me like that. Knowing I never wanted him to stop looking at
me in that way, the way that made me feel like we were the only two people in
the world, like I was the only girl in the world. He had my heart in his hands,
to do what he pleased with.
I knew right then and there that I would never be able to go
without him.
He licked his lips and leaned in to kiss me. The second his
tongue touched mine, it turned into its own moment, its own creation, its own
world. His body fell forward and mine backward, pushing me further into my
mattress. My legs spread wider and he readily lay in between them, placing all
his weight on his arms that were cradling my face. The room was dim, but I
could sense him everywhere and all at once.
“You’re so fucking beautiful, Aubrey. So damn beautiful,” he
groaned into the side of my neck as he placed soft kisses down to my cleavage
and toward my nipple. He sucked it into his mouth as his hand caressed my other
breast, leaving me withering beneath him. Chills running up and down my waiting
body. My back arched off the bed, wanting more and he obliged. I could feel his
erection on my wet core as he purposely moved his hips, grinding against my
heat, creating a delicious tingling that I felt all over.
I sucked in my bottom lip to conceal the moan that was about
to escape.
“Darlin’, I want you to make every fucking noise possible.
Do you understand me?”
I moaned in response and it earned me a forceful yet tender caress
of his hand against my clit. He manipulated my bundle of nerves and within
minutes my legs started to shake and I couldn’t keep my eyes open. He
effortlessly made his way down my body, pushing his fingers into my opening and
sucking on my nub in a back and forth motion.
My hands immediately gripped his hair and he grunted in
satisfaction. I couldn’t take it anymore, the room started to spin and my
breathing faltered.
“Hmm… ah… mmm…” I exhaled.
The next thing I knew, he was kissing me, and I tasted myself
all over his mouth. It was intoxicating as much as it was arousing. He knew my
body better than I did, spending hours upon hours exploring it until he
memorized every last curve.
I heard a rustling of some sort and opened my eyes to see
that he was opening a condom as he kicked off his slacks and boxer briefs. I
watched with fascinated eyes as he rolled it up his big, hard cock, barely
being able to contain my need for his body to once again be on top of
mine.
He kissed me again, giving me exactly what I craved and
placed the tip of his dick at my opening.
“I love you,” he whispered in between kissing me.
“I love you, too. More than
anything,” I murmured, not breaking our kiss and eye contact.

Karina has given us another fantastic story.
Karina delivers another impactful and emotional story.  The Lie deals with a very delicate situation and Karina holds nothing back.
The chemistry between Brigs and Natasha is beautiful and is so easily seen.  However sometimes you fall in love with right person at the wrong time.  Brigs and Natasha’s story is not an easy one.   I loved how Karina had all this play out.
The Lie is told from both Brigs and Natasha’s POV. I love how it goes back and forth between the past and the present.   It ties everything together and gives the story the depth and more intense.  Karina’s writing will draw in and keep you captivated til the end.
Fabulous story Karina!!

EXCERPT

Without even thinking, I end up in Natasha’s neighborhood, on her street. I pull the car over and stare at her building. I can drive off. I can go blow off some steam with Lachlan. I can drive and scream and wish to god that things were different.

But I don’t want to do it alone.

I get out of the car and head to her flat.

I knock on her door, wondering if she’s even in, if she might still be sleeping. It’s still early on a Saturday and we don’t see each other on the weekends without it being work related, such as seeing a classic film at the cinema. I hadn’t planned to talk to her until Monday, her last week of work as my research assistant before going back to London.

My heart pinches at that thought.

She’s leaving me.

What the hell am I doing?

But then the door opens slowly and she’s staring at me with wide eyes, her hair piled on top of her head in a messy bun, a fluffy robe around her body.

“Sorry,” I say quickly, immediately feeling bad. “Did I wake you up?”

She yawns. “Kind of, but I should be getting up anyway. What’s, um, up?”

I rub my lips together. “I…I wanted to know if you wanted to go for a drive?”

“Where?”

I shrug. “I don’t know. Far away. But not too far. I have to be back by twelve-thirty for Hamish.”

“What time is it now?”

“Eight-thirty.”

She rolls her eyes. “And you were wondering if you woke me up. I should still be sleeping for at least another two hours.”

I nod, embarrassed at my enthusiasm. I’m being inappropriate. “I should go.”

I turn around, but she reaches out and grabs my arm, holding tight. “No, don’t,” she says. “I want to go with you. Just give me five minutes, okay?”

I turn to look at her and she’s flashing me a persuasive smile.

“I’ll be in the car,” I tell her.

Somehow she’s true to her word. In five minutes she’s jogging down the steps of her building, dressed in jeans and a tank top that shows off the tawny warmth of her summer tan. She hasn’t touched her hair at all; it’s still up in that bedhead bun, and there isn’t a bit of makeup on her. She doesn’t need it. She looks joyful. She looks absolutely beautiful.

“You’re fast,” I tell her as she slips into the passenger seat.

She giddily drums her hands across the dash and beams at me. “I’m fast when I want to be. I love this car. Where are we going again? Oh right, somewhere far away. Can we get coffee first? I’m dying.”

I can’t help but grin at her as I turn the key. The car starts on the first turn. She’s my good luck charm. “You don’t seem like you need coffee.”

“I always need coffee,” she says emphatically. “You know this. So where to?”

“I honestly don’t know. You pick.”

“Do you have a map?”

“Of Scotland?”

“Yeah.”

I nod at the glove compartment. “In there.”

She opens it and it falls open with a clunk. She takes out an old faded road map and starts looking it over.

“Anything strike your eye?”

“I’m looking for Loch Ness.”

“That’s too far.”

“Okay, is there like another lake with a swamp monster?”

“Nearly all the lochs are in the Highlands.”

Arrrrrrrrrr in the Highlands,” she says playfully, imitating my accent.

“Okay, maybe no coffee for you.”

“Don’t be cruel, Professor Blue Eyes.” She goes back to studying the map but the mention of my nickname makes a small fire build inside me. And not one of anger.

She points on the map. “Here. Balmoral.”

“That’s where the Queen lives.”

“I know. I want to say hello.”

“It’s a two-hour drive,” I point out.

“Well, then we better get cracking,” she says. “The Queen is expecting us.”

She’s definitely full of spirit today. It seems to latch onto me and I ingest it like a tonic. She’s erasing all the humiliation and pain from the morning.

We head out of the city, taking the A-90 to the M-90 and speed north. After we get her some coffee and we share a couple of sausage rolls for breakfast, I warn her that we literally will see the estate and have to head back. But she doesn’t mind.

And honestly, neither do I. I crank the old radio on the car to pick up an oldies station playing a special on Otis Redding. The day is warm and gorgeous, and even though we’re going fast, our windows are down, enjoying the wind and the sun on our skin.

About an hour into our drive, Natasha turns to me and says, “Tell me the truth. Why did you come to get me this morning?”

“Was it that unusual?” I ask without looking at her.

“Yes,” she says. “The last time you came to my house without me knowing…”

“Back then I was following up on an email. I wanted to know if you were all right,” I tell her before she can tell me anything else about that night.

“And now I want to know if you’re all right,” she says gently.

I glance at her. There’s a softness in her eyes that undoes me. I grip the wheel hard, conscious of my every movement and how they might appear to her. A good man, after the night she kissed me, the night I kissed her right back, would have never been alone with her again.

But I’m not a good man.

I’m a man who is slowly but surely falling in the wrong direction.

review

Current is the first book I have ready by Abby McCarthy and really enjoyed it.

Current is a story about second chance love – a love that truly never went away.  A love that was ripped from each of them.

Abby writes an interesting plot and that’s what keeps you attached to the story and the characters.  June is thrown some hefty curve balls in her life.  Just when she things are going perfect for her again, it’s all torn away from her.

You can’t deny such a strong current between two people.  But when another current is going against them, are they really strong enough to hold on and pull through it?

I enjoyed the twists and turns that Abby added to the story to give it more depth.  The characters were intriguing and believable.  Overall, it was good read. I look forward to seeing what Abby comes out with next – hoping maybe another book in this series about some secondary characters.

Current Teaser 6

Prologue

“Jake! Where the hell are you? We should’ve been out on the water by now!” Shit, Jake thought. The old man didn’t sound good today. He wondered if he even slept. When Jake left early this morning, his old man hadn’t come home yet which could mean so many things.

Jake looked over to June who was decent and breathed a sigh of relief as his dad walked through the clearing. If his dad was just minutes earlier he would have seen June. The thought sickened Jake.
June stood up as soon as she saw Mr. Daniels, her cheeks flushed pink from embarrassment and she hoped he had no idea what they had been up too.

“Hi, Mr. Daniels,” she said.

“You again, huh? You’re the reason Jake isn’t where he’s supposed to be, aren’t you?”

June didn’t know what to say. She heard Mike Daniels say unkind things to Jake, but he had never been rude to June before. Jake reached June and slipped his hand in hers and gave her a look that said don’t answer him.

“I’m coming now, Dad,” Jake said. June was instantly sad that she had to leave Jake.

“I’m good at cleaning fish. I bet I’d be a great help on the boat Mr. Daniels,” June offered up ignoring the glare Jake gave her. She knew he didn’t want her around his old man, but she also knew her time was coming to an end.

Mr. Daniels was quiet and thought for a moment and said, “Fine. Let’s go.”

Jake felt it low and in the pit of his stomach that something about this was a bad idea, but when June squeezed his hand and said, “Please,” he couldn’t deny her.

The fishing boat was not a luxury boat. It was a dirty, slightly rusty boat, with large nets hanging off the front of it, and other fishing contraptions off the back that June had no idea what they did. When she thought of fishing, she thought of how her dad did it with a pole, a couple of beers and a day out with friends. There were poles attached on the side of the boat and baskets attached to the opposite side. It became very clear to June that this was not a leisurely trip down the river.

Jake cringed when June sat on the bench that he knew had dried fish guts staining it. He hated that her pretty dress was going to be ruined before the day was over. He hated even more, when he saw his dad take the whiskey bottle to his lips before pushing off their small dock. He never wanted June to be around his dad, and for once, he instantly regretted giving in to her quiet plea to go with them. He was shocked his dad agreed in the first place.
The boat pushed off the dock and Jake dropped cages to catch crawfish and he explained to June that they would sweep back around and grab them on the way back.

“Less talking. More work,” Mr. Daniels yelled more angrily than necessary at the young couple.

June quickly asked, “What can I do?”

Jake tensed at his dad’s tone and then tensed again when he watched him take the fifth of whiskey to his lips finishing the bottle.

Eventually, they reached a spot on the river where Mr. Daniels swore the fish would be biting. Jake showed June how to bait and cast out a line, taking his time in making sure she learned it right.

“If I’d thought this was going to be a day of you trying to get in your girlfriend’s pants, I’d have thought twice about letting her tag along,” Mike Daniels spat at the two, jealous that they had each other and angry that he no longer had his sweet wife. She was always the only person who made him good. Without her, he had nothing. He never felt connected to Jake. Jake always occupied his wife’s time and Mike resented that. He hated Jake even more for it when he no longer had her.

Jake cringed again at the vulgar words his dad used around June, mouthing, “Sorry,” to her.
June responded by squeezing Jake’s hand and for the first time she got a small glimpse at what Jake went through on a daily basis. Her heart hurt for him and she was going to do her best not to let Mr. Daniels harsh words get to her.

Mr. Daniels pushed past the two and intentionally shoulder-checked Jake. Jake knew not to stand up to his old man, especially not when June was there, so he gritted his teeth and tried to check his temper. Jake was angry that his dad was acting like this in front of June. He could take it, but didn’t need for June to put up with it.

Mr. Daniels threw a line out, stationed his rod and then cast another, doing it all rather clumsily. The boat swayed side to side and Jake thought there would be no swimming for the pair tonight, the river was far too choppy. It was one of the reasons he didn’t rush to the boat. He never thought his dad would want to fish in this.

June squealed with excitement when she felt a tug on the line. Jake told her to reel it slow at first and let the fish think that he was getting the bait, that way the fish would really get hooked. She did as instructed and after a few minutes of give and take on the line, she reeled in her first fish. It was small, too small to sell, and so Jake showed her how to unhook it and then he threw it back in. Jake caught several large fish while his dad had yet to catch one.

The clouds looked heavy and low, signaling to Jake that a bad storm might be coming.

“I don’t think we should stay out here, not if we’re going to pick up our baskets on the way back,” Jake said to his dad.

Mike Daniels looked furiously at Jake. He knew when to call it quits. It was his boat. He’d been fishing on this river since he was a boy. Maybe he shouldn’t have had that extra fifth of whiskey with breakfast-who was he kidding-for breakfast, but it didn’t matter he knew when to call it quits and that wasn’t yet. He needed more fish. He needed a bigger haul. He lost big on the tables last night and if he didn’t come up with money to pay Mr. Stevens there would be hell to pay. He’d already lost the farm and that shit son of his couldn’t even catch enough fish to help pay his debts. What good was he, anyways?

“The fuck did you say, boy? I’ll tell you when we’re ready to go.”

June flinched at Mr. Daniels tone but tried to not let Jake see it had affected her. She also tried not to flinch when Mr. Daniels threw out his line and snagged his rig against a bunch of turned up branches that the coming storm was pushing down the river.

“That’s a fifty dollar rig. Get your ass in the water and go get it,” he said to Jake. Jake wanted to argue about the fast current and how dangerous it was. He also hated the thought of leaving June alone with his old man even for a second, but he could tell by his old man’s tone that today could get even worse than it already was. Jake stripped off his jeans, into his boxers and quickly jumped into the murky water, looking back at June once before plunging under the water.

June’s stomach tightened. Every second Jake was in the water was a second she felt like she couldn’t breathe.

It happened fast. Mike Daniels was too close to June for comfort.

“You know I saw you two together. I didn’t figure you for a whore, but at least my boy is getting some. I’m thinking I should get a taste. See what all the fuss is about that’s been keeping him so busy.”

June froze. She didn’t want Mr. Daniels to come any closer to her, but she needed to make sure that Jake was okay.

Jake emerged from under the water near the brush. The water was choppy, and there were more limbs below the surface than above. He reached out and tried to unhook the rig, but the tumultuous waters pushed a sharp jagged stick into his ribs. He felt it cut his skin, but he had to go on.

“Stop!” he heard the faint cry from June, and turned his head back to see why she was yelling. His dad had his hands on June and was groping one of June’s breasts.

“No!” she yelled again and he watched as she struck out and smacked his dad. He needed to get to her, he knew what happened when he tried to fight back and. Fighting back only made it worse.

He couldn’t swim back fast enough to the boat. His arms burned with how hard he was trying to get to her. The sky opened up and sent large pellets of water everywhere. Jake could barely see through the dense rain. He pushed himself as hard as he could but felt like he was failing when he saw his dad grab her by the back of her hair and force her to her knees, with his other hand around her throat. He knew his dad was sick, but he never imagined him trying to do something as vile as this.

Jake reached the boat just as his dad’s belt buckle was being undone and his world went black.
