I am having the hardest time writing this review. On one hand I really enjoyed this book – I love dark, thrilling reads. However, I had an extremely hard time connecting to one the characters who plays an extremely large part in this book. So I felt like I was reading this book without any emotional ties to it and for me, that is a hard thing to overcome.
I won’t go into the details of what happens in this book – for me, that is the best part of this book. I love how Willow plotted this book out and how everything unravels. Regardless of missing the emotional connection to a main character, this story was just too good to walk away from.
Carter is a dick. I don’t consider him an alpha male in anyway – he’s a fucking dick. He’s controlling to the point that it was ridiculous and I couldn’t stand him. I get that he can’t be a softy but the shit he puts Aria through and how he treats her, for me, it was too over the top – those type of men never truly win the heart of a women. I found no redeeming qualities in him and honestly wish he would rot in hell.
Aria is a very strong and fierce woman. While I loved that she stayed strong for so long, she was a victim the whole book and my heart hurt for her. I truly believe her change ended up being due to Stockholm Syndrome and nothing more. I understand that Carter wanted her to break her but to go to the lengths he did, her reaction in doing anything was only due to the fact that she finally broke and just wanted out. Nothing more, nothing less.
As I said, I love this story’s plot. I love a dark thriller. This book does end in a cliffhanger and I will no doubt read the next one to see how everything plays out. However, I will be rooting for Carter’s demise because it will take a shit ton of overhaul on him for me to see any good in him. He doesn’t deserve to breathe let alone get Aria in the end.
Finding any smidge connection between Aria and Carter is null for me and why I didn’t give this book 5 stars. But rating in lower than a 4, felt like I wasn’t giving the writing or the story the credit it deserves. This is a very compelling and well written story. It’s what kept me captivated the whole time.
Willow, I have to applaud you on writing such an intense story and for writing a character I loathe so much. I look forward to the next book.
Willow Winters is so happy to be a USA Today, Wall Street Journal and #1 Contemporary Bestselling Romance Author. She likes her action hot and her bad boys hotter. She certainly doesn’t hold back on either one in her writing!Willow started writing after having her little girl, Evie, December 2015. All during her pregnancy with Evie she continued to read and she only wanted to read romance. She was reading a book a day — sometimes two.
In January 2016 Willow was staying up late with Evie and just thinking of all these stories. They came to her constantly so she finally sat down and just started writing. She always wanted to do it so she figured, why not? Today Willow cannot be happier for making that decision!
