Manhunt by Tyler Anne Snell….ARC Review

24753060

Synopsis:

An innocent beauty looking for answers turns to a detective looking for vengeance

One day. One town. Three missing women. Things like this didn’t happen in Culpepper. Except that they had—once before. Eleven years ago, young Braydon Thatcher was unable to stop a tragic murder, one that hit painfully close to home. Now a detective, Braydon can’t help but notice the eerie similarities between the two crimes. But he has to focus on the present and keep distractions to a minimum. Distractions like Sophia Hardwick, who crashes into town like a Florida thunderstorm, demanding to know where her missing sister is. The attraction between them is nearly his undoing. But he has to protect her, because it’s clear someone is resurrecting ghosts in order to punish Braydon. And if he lets his emotions for Sophia get the best of him, she could become yet another victim…

My review:

Manhunt is the debut work from author Tyler Anne Snell and was a thrilling and suspenseful freshman novel. A true who-done-it leading up to a twist at the ending, I was on the edge of my seat from the very first page.

Detective Braydon Thatcher and Sophia Hardwick are thrown together by the worst of circumstances…the disappearance of three local women, one of which was Sophia’s sister, Lisa. It’s that disappearance that leads Sophia into Braydon’s town and into his life where they will form a bond while working to get to the bottom of this mystery and hopefully find these women alive. Braydon never expected that his past would play a part in this investigation and when he realizes who is responsible for these kidnappings, and murder, it may be too late…not just for the three missing women, but for Sophia as well.

Wow, this book really kept me in a white-knuckled grip on my e-reader! From the very beginning, we are thrown into the investigation and mystery surrounding these women and detective. I loved the immediate relationship Sophia and Braydon form when she marches into his office and demands not just answers, but that she will be along for the ride as he finds those answers. Braydon is a determined and focused man who also knows not to make Sophia any more riled up than she already was. Smart man, that detective! Sophia is a total spitfire who refuses to sit back like a wall flower. I really enjoyed her personality and determination to find her sister, no matter what the cost. Now, as for the actual crime, I thought it was really well done with a background that makes this mystery even more diabolical and nerve-wracking. Even though I had an idea as to who was responsible, there was a twist at the end that totally threw me for a loop and I love that in a story!

Overall, if you like a good mystery with a dash of romance, this should be on your to-read list. Thank you, Tyler, for one heck of a thrilling read!

The Nashville Series by Inglath Cooper…Spotlight & Author Q&A

Nashville - Part Eight - R U Serious

Synopsis:

The Nashville Series begins when CeCe is stranded on the side of the road with her Walker Hound named Hank Junior, when two football players from Georgia — Holden and Thomas Franklin — come to her rescue. With very little cash in their pockets but their hearts full of dreams, this unlikely trio sets out to discover their fate in Music City.

Author Q&A:

What inspired you to write The Nashville Series?

Writing fiction has always been my first love, but several years ago, I decided I wanted to learn how to write lyrics. I had fallen in love with country music because of the way the songs so often tell a story. So I started going to Nashville, taking classes, and eventually meeting other writers I went on to co-write with. I loved everything about the Nashville songwriting community. I don’t think I’ve ever met a more generous group of artistic people. At some point, my fiction writing brain took over again, and a story started to ask to be written.

Are your main characters – CeCe, Holden and Thomas – inspired by people in your life?

The characters of CeCe,  Holden and Thomas have become real to me, maybe because they embody many of the qualities I loved about so many of the people I met in Nashville. They each have the dream of making music their life’s work, and they go after it heart and soul.

Your love of dogs is evident in your books. Are you involved with rescue dogs?

Hank Junior, CeCe’s Walker hound, is inspired by my dog Roscoe. He was left at our local pound as a young dog, and his life was about to be ended when I got him out. He all but talks and is one of the loves of my life. I became involved with rescue, fostering many dogs and helping to get the first No-Kill Adoption Center in our county built.

Where do you get your inspiration for your novels?

In people, I think. I’m always fascinated by people’s stories. Mostly in what’s made them who they are. I believe that we’re shaped by our experiences in life, the things that happen to us, good and bad.

Do you have a routine or special place you like to write?

I’ve pretty much taught myself to write anywhere. Starbucks, in the car(as a passenger!), outside. But I do commit myself to writing 2500 words a day at least five days a week. That’s a comfortable pace for me and makes me feel productive.

Holding Strong by Lori Foster…Blog Tour Stop & Review

Book 2_Holding Strong by Lori Foster_cover

Synopsis:

An up-and-coming MMA fighter wants more than just one night from a woman fleeing her past in Lori’s irresistible new novel.

Heavyweight fighter Denver Lewis plays real nice, but he doesn’t share. That’s why he’s been avoiding top-notch flirt Cherry Peyton. But a man can only resist those lush curves for so long. Their encounter surpasses all his fantasies, bringing out protective urges that Cherry’s about to need more than she knows…

Denver’s combination of pure muscle and unexpected tenderness has been driving Cherry wild. Yet no sooner does she get what she’s been craving than old troubles show up on her doorstep. And this time, Cherry can’t hide behind a carefree façade. Because the man by her side is one who’ll fight like hell to keep her safe…if only she’ll trust him enough to let him…

My review:

Holding Strong is the second book in author Lori Foster’s steamy and sexy MMA fighter series and focuses on the uber alpha fighter Dallas and the sweet and kind Cherry. From the very beginning the heat rose up off the pages and drew me in. Then the suspense took hold and I was a goner. This book was fantastic.

Denver and Cherry had been denying a mutual attraction for too long. Denver thought she was too sweet and pure for him. Cherry thought he was too hard and tough for her. Neither one could have been more wrong and finally, after denying the attraction for far too long, they both concede defeat and give into the heat. And oh, my, was it hot. Before either one can realize it, the sex they share seals the deal and solidifies things between them and takes the from friends to lovers. But it wouldn’t be that easy a transition and they have to wade through emotional waters as they both learn how to love one another. As if that wasn’t a hard enough challenge, both of their pasts decide at that moment to come back to haunt them. It would prove to be difficult, but with each other to lean on, certainly they would be able to weather the storm…all while staying alive.

Honestly, between the heat and steamy scenes and the suspense and mystery surrounding both characters, I don’t know what I enjoyed most. I loved Denver for his take charge attitude and his willingness to take care of his girl. Whether it be an illness or someone threatening her safety, he was so good to her and it was totally swoon-worthy! Cherry was equally enjoyable with a huge heart and a penchant for taking care of herself without any help. She was strong and had live through a childhood no one should have endured. But she realized that had made her stronger today and I really appreciated that. Now, the scorching heat between them? Delicious. I loved that because they already had a friendship of sorts they were able to start out hot and heavy. Mmmhmmmm!

Overall, another hot and thrilling read form Lori Foster that had me hooked! And of course, I can’t wait to see what’s next for my favorite MMA fighters!

Excerpt:

“Whatever! My soccer-mom mini-van rocks. Now, since I didn’t welch on our bet, and I did exactly what I was supposed to do, do I get my prize?”

I knew exactly what she was referring to, but I couldn’t give in that easily. “And what prize is that?” I asked.

She placed the tip of her index finger on my chest and slowly dragged it down my button-line as she said, “I want my Longer Than Necessary Lingering Hug.”

I stepped even closer to her, placing my hands on her hips and slowly sliding them around to her back. I moved in until our bodies were pressed together. As I grabbed her tightly around her lower back, she wrapped her arms around my neck. We both pulled the other in tight and just held one another in the vacant parking lot.

Lauren started to release her grip, and I pulled her tighter and whispered in her ear, “Not yet.” She responded only by hugging me tighter than I had been hugged in a very long time.

I softly kissed her neck, and I kissed again, only slightly higher toward her ear. I then gently kissed her cheek, inching closer to her lips with each kiss, until she suddenly turned her head for our lips to delicately meet.

I tenderly kissed her lips as I brushed my thumb along her cheek bone. I don’t think I was able to kiss her lips more than three or four times before we erupted into a passionate, beautiful kiss. I felt like I was on a plummeting roller coaster, with my stomach dropping as our tongues met for the first time. Never in my life had I felt a kiss like this, and the intensity grew with each fleeting second.

She placed her hands flat against my chest, touching me as our lips and tongues drove each other wild. I lowered my hand and groped her through her dress. I realized we were in an open parking lot, but my lust commandeered all control of my senses. I placed my hand under her dress and firmly caressed the back of her leg until I reached her smooth ass. I slid my hand under her panties, and she raised her knee, rubbing the inside of her thigh against my leg.

“Adam, I want you,” she softly groaned.

Squeezing the grip my hand had on her ass was my only response, and my other hand, which was on her ribs, moved up to her breasts.

“Oh my God, I want you,” she groaned again. “But I can’t.”

“Don’t do anything you aren’t ready for,” I reluctantly said.

At that moment, I wanted her more than anything, but I also didn’t want her to do anything she wasn’t fully comfortable with. I wanted her badly, but I also wanted her to take her time.

“I’m sorry, but I’m married.”

“But you’re separated, aren’t you?”

“Yes, I am,” she said. “But I am still married. I want this to be right, in every way. There’s something about you; I don’t know what it is, but there’s something about you that just feels so right. Everything about you feels right, and I really don’t want to risk ruining this.”

“There’s something about you, too,” I told her. “And I definitely don’t want you to fuck this up.”

“Thank you,” she said with a sigh of relief. “But I like the way I worded it a little bit better.”

“You say tomato, and I say tomato,” I said, now realizing that the line made a lot more sense in our verbal dialogue than it does written here. I went on, “Can I just ask you one thing?”

“You can ask me anything, Adam.”

I gave her a devilish smirk and a sly wink as I asked, “Would a blowjob fuck it up?”

“Some….. thing…. else!” she chuckled. “Remind me again why I like you?”

“Aha! You just admitted you like me!”

“I do, a lot!” she whispered with a final soft kiss on my lips. “But I’m about to turn back into a pumpkin, as, you so eloquently put it, even though I think it’s the carriage that turned back into a pumpkin and not Cinderella.”

“You’re seriously correcting me, Miss Livingstone?”

“Good night, Mister Smart-ass,” she said as she opened the door to her mini-van and sat in the driver’s seat.

“Good night. Text me when you’re home, so I know you’re safe,” I said as I closed the door for her.

I started walking back to my own car, and I wasn’t more than ten or fifteen feet from Lauren’s mini-van when she lowered the window and called to me, “Adam!” She paused for a moment and continued, “I like you,” as I looked back to her.

“I like you, too, Lauren.”

I got home and set my keys on the kitchen counter just as I was receiving her text: “I’m home safe. Can’t wait to dream of you. XOX!”

What an amazing night, I thought. What an incredible and fucking amazing night!

By Sea by Carly Fall…Review

23234901

Synopsis:

While fighting the War on Drugs in Latin America, Marine Brody Teller was involved in an accident that left him with a supernatural power: a deep connection to the sea and the ability to control it.

When the mysterious Joe Smith approaches him with an incredible job offer, Brody thinks it’s too good to be true. His life-saving need and his desire to be near the ocean while earning a living are rolled into one perfect job.

Rayna Lopez lives a quiet life as she tries to climb her way up the CIA ladder, always in fear the government will learn of her family lineage. When her father asks for help getting her famous and belligerent half-sister out of trouble, Rayna reluctantly agrees to travel with her and they board a yacht where they will be protected.

Brody and Rayna realize they’ve met before, and despite a significant lack of trust between them, they face an attraction neither can deny. As they fight to keep Rayna’s sister alive, lies are revealed and secrets are told. They must both learn to trust each other, and—if they live through their voyage—figure out what to do about their whirlwind romance.

My review:

By Sea is the first book in a new series from author Carly Fall and the cover and blurb alone piqued my curiosity and from there it was a suspenseful and sexy ride that I truly enjoyed.

Brody Teller and Rayna Lopez met briefly before setting sail in an attempt to keep Rayna’s famous sister safe from a crazed fan. Their initial meeting, though brief, was intense. Working for the CIA, Rayna had been assigned to check up on former Marine Brody Teller, who had been discharged and off the grid since a terrible accident during one of his missions. She hadn’t expected someone so sexy and brooding when she arrived and he hadn’t expected someone so beautiful and fascinating when he answered the door. Now, months later, and after Brody had gotten an offer he couldn’t refuse from a mysterious man, they were both on the yacht he was captaining and in charge of keeping Rayna’s sister safe from harm. Both of them were surprised to see one another on this boat and both of them were finding it harder and harder to keep the mutual attraction at bay…

From start to finish this story was packed with mystery and suspense. From finding out what happened that left Brody with his powers to who was after Rayna’s sister, it was a thrill a minute. The sexual tension and heat between Rayna and Brody added a delicious layer that balanced out the intensity when it came to the impending danger and I really enjoyed it. Both Rayna and Brody were equally enjoyable for both their strengths and weaknesses. They were great together and worked well when the chips were down and danger was at their front door. They truly made a dynamic, ass kicking couple! This book was also a fantastic intro to the series and left me curious to see what Carly has in store for us next!

Thank you, Carly, for a fantastic read!

Excerpt:

“You have very pretty hair,” Lila tells Casey, who preens from the compliment.

“It’s just like my mom’s,” Casey says innocently, and the stab to my heart is immediate. It’s lessened with time, thankfully, but in these simple moments, it catches me off guard. “It’s really curly. And red.” She wrinkles her nose.

“That explains it,” Lila says, looking at me with surprised eyes. “I was expecting you to have dark hair like your daddy.”

“Nope. I got the red.” Casey sighs. “And the freckles.”

“You know, my best friend has red hair and freckles, and she’s just as gorgeous as you are.”

Casey smiles up at me, then back at Lila. “Cool.”

“So what are our plans for the rest of the day? Surely you don’t intend to try to entertain me all day.” Lila takes a sip of her water, watching me over the rim.

“I do intend to entertain you all day. And don’t call me Shirley.”

Lila laughs, a happy, loud laugh that makes my stomach clench. She tosses her hair over one shoulder and shakes her head at me. “You’re silly.”

“He’s really silly,” Casey agrees and claps her hands as our pancakes and bacon are served. “But he’s handsome. Don’t you think?”

“She’s really subtle,” I inform Lila dryly. She simply pours maple syrup on her pancakes, so much that I wince and then chuckle at her. “Do you want some pancakes with your syrup?”

“Maybe.” She winks at me and turns her attention back to Casey. “Yes, your daddy is handsome.”

“And he’s smart. And he has a good job. And he can fix things.”

“Really?” Lila takes a bite of her bacon and leans in like Casey is about to tell her all of life’s secrets. “What can he fix?”

I watch Casey, also interested to hear what it is, exactly, that I can fix.

A Message from Kristen Proby:

Dear readers,

As you know, the With Me In Seattle series came to a close earlier this month with the eighth and final installment, FOREVER WITH ME. I’ve been steadfast in my decision that there would be no further stories from the series, no spin-offs, nothing more. In my mind, it was complete.

And I still feel that the Montgomery/Williams families are complete, and I maintain that I’m happy with their happy-ever-afters.

But, I’ve also heard you when you’ve said that Asher, Matt Montgomery’s partner in TIED WITH ME, deserves to have a happily ever after for himself and his daughter Casey. So, when the lovely ladies from 1001 Dark Nights asked me to participate in their wonderful project, I thought long and hard about whose story it should be about. Seattle is finished, and I’ve moved on to New Orleans for the new Boudreaux Series… And then it occurred to me: why not do both, and offer a companion novella to each of the series?

And so, because you, the reader, has been so insistent that you want to see Asher and Casey find their perfect person, I’m excited to introduce you to EASY WITH YOU. I think you’re going to love Asher and Lila’s love story this spring…

Happy Reading,
Kristen Proby

All For You by Christi Barth…Review

23208633

Synopsis:

Small-town park ranger Casey Hobbes has spent her life under the radar, carefully guarding a secret. “The forest flirt,” as her best friend calls her, keeps things casual with men. That way she’ll never care enough to be tempted to share the truth about her past. But when she spots a half-naked stranger on the lake’s edge, Casey can’t resist his muscles or his charm and she’s all-in for enjoying both, while keeping emotion out of it. What could be the danger of one summer fling?

Professor Zane Buchanan has built his entire career on exposing the dark realities of cults, but one—the Sunshine Seekers—remains infuriatingly impossible to crack. Zane’s shocked to discover its sole anonymous survivor is hiding in his new hometown. It’s nearly impossible to concentrate on work, however, when he’s derailed by his attraction to the beautiful blonde in khaki uniform shorts.

As things between Casey and Zane heat up, she struggles with keeping her past from him. And Zane’s on a quest to expose the truth, no matter the consequences. Will their growing emotions finally unseal Casey’s big secret? Or will she turn her back on love to keep the past safely buried?

My review:

All For You is the second book in author Christi Barth’s Shore Secrets series, a series I fell in love with in the previous book and my love continued with this next installment. Two amazing characters drawn together with a secret that could tear them apart just as they begin their relationship? Yep, I was totally hooked and loved every minute of Casey and Zane’s story.

Park ranger Casey Hobbes and new-in-town professor Zane Buchanan meet under less than ideal circumstances, thanks in part to Zane’s misadventure with diving in their local lake in colder temps than he’s used to. Luckily, Casey has seen it all before and didn’t make Zane feel worse than he already did about the whole “I’m almost a bona fide mansicle” situation. Zane knew better than to dive when it was too cold but he can’t even be angry with himself since it was this situation that introduced him to this gorgeous park ranger. The heat and attraction between them is immediate and unable to ignore. Luckily Zane would be in town for a little bit, interviewing for a position at the university, and with a little bit of luck, would get a chance to explore things with Casey.

But what seems to be a delicious match on the surface may prove to be a match that is doomed from the start. Zane’s life’s work has been studying cults and the dangers and darkness within them, specifically The Sunshine Seekers. A group of extremists with only one lone survivor left and that survivor is the person he has his sights set on. Zane had no idea that he was closer to that survivor than he ever imagined…and Casey had no idea that her secret, the one she’s kept for so many years, was the closest it’s ever been to being revealed. Were Casey and Zane destined to lose what they have just found between them?

Oh, how I love this series. There is something so wonderful with this town and all of the characters it holds. I have loved Casey since meeting her in the previous book and I was so happy she would have a chance at love. And who better than with the sexy newbie, Zane? He’s everything a gal could want. Smart, sexy, curious, and witty. Casey is also smart and witty on top of dedicated and caring. The banter they share is fantastic and beyond enjoyable. I love that between a hero and heroine. Adding to that is the smoldering heat that sparks between them almost immediately and continues to grow and at a delicious pace. Oh, my, only a few pages in and I was hot for teacher. Of course, as I read, I realized what Casey was keeping secret and that it had every potential to ruin things between them and I was so worried! It was s secret that could make Zane’s career, his life’s work, and solve a mystery that has been plaguing him for years. I just kept worrying that this whole thing would end in a crash and burn, with Casey hurt. Luckily, Christi writes some pretty amazing men and Zane was no exception. (I can’t give anything away but trust me when I say the ending was “dreamy sigh” worthy). And it’s not without a lot of emotion along the way!

Adding to their story is the continuing appearances of all of the people in the town I adore. It was like visiting with old friends!

Thank you, Christi, for another wonderful addition to the Shore Secrets series and I cannot wait to see what you have in store for us next!

Exclusive Excerpt:

I pulled off the main road of Paige’s home and slipped my truck into park. An overwhelming sense of relief filled me when I saw she’d made it home safely. All the lights were off, and nothing seemed to be out of the ordinary.

Except the lonely ache I felt inside.

I’d barely ate or slept in four days. But in this moment, I just wanted Paige, nothing else mattered.

The thought of her sleeping alone in her bed without me combined with the desperate need to feel her body against mine had me slouching forward and resting my forehead against the steering wheel.

I closed my eyes briefly, and muttered, “Don’t do it, idiot,” as I fought the impulse to go to her.

I could practically feel her heart beating—her soul calling to mine—I was that connected to her.

I was a starved man, yearning to have her in my arms. Before I was able to stop myself, I was striding across her front lawn, feeling an internal pull to be with her. I went around to the backside of the house and tapped on her window.

While standing there my attention fell to the grass, and all of the reasons why this was a bad idea oppressed me. I shouldn’t be here. Staying away from Paige was the only way I could protect her. I couldn’t let Hank see how deeply mine and Paige’s love went for one another, or he could possibly take his animosity for me out on her. And if Hank hurt Paige in any way, it would be game over—there was no telling what I would do. She was my weakness and my strength all rolled into one, right around my heart.

Just as I was about to walk away and let Paige be, a dim light flickered on. The white curtain covering the window pane was drawn to the side, and I lifted my gaze. Paige stood before me staring through the clear glass, dressed in a long white tee. The conflicting emotions in her beautifully brown eyes reflected the way I felt inside, and it caused my heart to thump unevenly.

She lifted the window and then leaned forward while wrapping her fingers around the window frame, peering down at me.

“Colton,” she breathed my name, and I was uncertain if it was meant as a greeting or a question.

“Can I come in?” I queried, getting straight to the point before I came up with reasons to force myself to leave her be.

“Yes.” She stepped aside.

I braced my palms on the bottom ledge and hoisted myself upward. My right shoulder hit the window framing as the upper half of my body made it inside her room. I hadn’t crawled through this window in ages, but the damn thing seemed smaller.

I lowered my feet to the ground and stood tall before briefly turning to close the window at my back. When I faced the room again, Paige was at the edge of her bed. She sat down and nestled herself under the comforter. When her eyes met mine, she grasped the corner of the blanket and lifted it as though a silent invitation.

Without a single sound, I slipped off my boots and went to her. Once climbing in next to her, she let the comforter gradually fall over me and stretched over to the nightstand where she turned off the light. Then, she settled back down on her right hip, her back toward me. I could feel her hesitation as she tried to distance herself from me.

To feel that kind of uncertainty pouring out of her was the same as someone cracking open my chest and grabbing ahold of my heart. But in truth, I couldn’t blame her for feeling this way, because it was my fault for being hot and cold all over the place. It wasn’t fair to her.

Desperately craving her warmth and needing to know that we were okay even though it was wrong of me to do so, my arm came to the center of her stomach, and in slow motion, I hauled her into my chest. She didn’t fight me.

I outstretched one arm above her head and rested my cheek on my bicep while scooting closer till my nose rested against her hair, so I could inhale the sweet scent of her. With my other hand still at her center, I began to methodically rub tiny circles on her abdomen with the pad of my thumb. Her breathing increased with every full loop.

My eyes began to fall heavy with the weight of the last few days. I was so damn tired, but lying here with Paige—just like this—was all I ever wanted.

“Colton?” she asked suddenly out of the blue.

“Yeah?”

Her hand came to my wrist and she caressed it softly. “What are you doing here?”

Paige couldn’t have asked me a tougher question, and I bit back the defeat I felt inside. I didn’t hold the answer she was looking for. Instead, I made light of the situation, hoping to make her smile. “Sneaking in your window. Which shrunk drastically in size over the years, by the way.”

A quiet laughter seeped out of her, and I found myself genuinely smiling for the first time in days. She rotated to face me and set her hand on my chest. “It didn’t shrink. You have—” She skimmed her palm across my chest up to my shoulder—“broadened, so you don’t fit through it as well as you used to.”

“Maybe,” I grinned mischievously.

In that instant, so many childhood reminiscences with Paige flashed through my mind, all of them filling my soul with sense of peace.

As a teen, there had been countless nights where I longed to see her so I’d go to her house and knock on her window. Paige would come outside, and we would lay in the grass for hours, watching the stars.

Even in the midst of my darkest days, those memories could bring a smile to my face. It was her that kept me going.

An unexplainable calm tranquility settled over me at having Paige’s body pressed against mine. She gave me hope I’d find myself again, and she made me believe someday I could let go of the hate and revenge I carried inside of me.

A profound tiredness took over me from the build-up of the past several happenings, and I was losing the will power to keep my eyes open.

Paige rose her hand to touch my cheek, caressing it. Her skin was so soft.

“Colton?” she repeated my name, softer this time.

I gazed down at her. “Yeah?”

The movement of my thumb paused on her stomach from the intensity burning in her eyes. “You know that’s not the answer I was looking for…”

“No, it wasn’t,” I agreed, knowing she deserved an honest explanation. “I don’t know why I’m here, only that I didn’t have the strength to stay away, so please, just let me hold you.”

“Okay.” She set her finger on my lower lip and gently ran it back and forth. Then, she leaned in and softly kissed the corner of my mouth. “Goodnight, cowboy.”

“Night,” was all I had time to say before sleep carried me away.
