Winner of the 2015 Beverly Hills Book Award, Suanne Laqueur’s astonishing debut novel follows a young man’s emotional journey to salvage relationships destroyed in the wake of a school shooting.

Synopsis:

As a college freshman, Erik Fiskare is drawn to the world of theater but prefers backstage to center stage. The moment he lays eyes on a beautiful, accomplished dancer named Daisy Bianco, his atoms rearrange themselves and he is drawn into a romance both youthfully passionate and maturely soulful. Their love story thrives within a tight-knit circle of friends, all bound by creativity and artistry. A newcomer arrives–a brilliant but erratic dancer with an unquenchable thirst for connection. And when this disturbed friend brings a gun into the theater, the story is forever changed. Daisy is shot and left seriously injured. And Erik finds himself alone in the aisle, looking down the muzzle of a pistol and trying to stop the madness. He succeeds, but with tremendous repercussions to his well-being and that of his loved ones.

Traumatized by the experience, the lovers spiral into depression and drug use until a shocking act of betrayal destroys their relationship. To survive, Erik must leave school and disconnect from all he loves. He buries his heartbreak and puts the past behind. Or so he believes.

As he moves into adulthood, Erik comes to grips with his role in the shooting, and slowly heals the most wounded parts of his soul. But the unresolved grief for Daisy continues to shape his dreams at night. Once those dreams were haunted by blood and gunfire. Now they are haunted by the refrain of a Gershwin song and a single question: is leaving always the end of loving?

Spanning 15 years, The Man I Love explores themes of love and sexuality, trauma—physical and mental—and its long-lasting effects, the burden of unfinished business and the power of reconciliation. Through Erik’s experience we reflect on what it means to be a man, a son and a leader. A soul mate, a partner and a lover. What it means to live the truth of who you are and what you feel. What it means to fight for what you love.

My review:

The Man I Love is the debut work from author Suanne Laqueur and let me say, what an amazing debut it is. Packed with raw emotion, beauty, horrors, and so many ups and downs, I was riveted and glued to each page.
Ok, so the synopsis is pretty much self-explanatory so I will skip to telling you all why this book was just so amazing.

The relationships that author Laqueur builds between these characters was done thoughtfully and lovingly. They are friendships and first time loves that we all have been through. It was wonderful to read these talented and artistic young group’s journey into becoming quite a close-knit group. I loved the individual personals that add so much to the group as a whole. They banter, their conversations, their work at artists. It was refreshing and exciting and just so different from what I’ve been reading these days. And then it’s all shattered. When I got to the pivotal moment in this book, I was reading wide-eyed and with sweaty palms. I was nervous and nauseated and so sick with worry. To me, that’s the sign of a great story. I felt all of the emotions the characters felt. Then things got better…only to get awful again. I went through such a range of emotions while reading this story and I loved every gut wrenching moment.

I felt for every one of these characters. They all have their ways of dealing with the trauma they endured one fateful day and good, bad, or indifferent, it shaped who they end up being as adults.

Of course, I felt most for Erik and Daisy. So much so. They find love, experience so many wonderful first time things together, grow together as couple and then it’s all ripped away. But I understood it all. I understood how dealing with a life altering event at such a still fresh-faced age would be difficult to deal with alone, yet alone together. Of course just because I understood it didn’t make it less painful to read.

Now, I won’t ruin anything as far as the ending but I will say that I was pleased with where we left off and I am certainly looking forward to see what is next!

Thank you, Ms. Laqueur, for one hell of an emotional story.

The Curvy Girls Club by Michele Gorman…Review

The Curvy Girls Club US cover
Synopsis:

Where Confidence is the New Black. Fed up with always struggling to lose weight, best friends Katie, Ellie, Pixie and Jane start a social club where size doesn’t matter. It soon grows into London’s most popular club – a place to have fun instead of counting carbs – and the women find their lives changing in ways they never imagined. But outside the club, life isn’t as rosy.

My Review:

The Curvy Girls Club is the second work of author Michele Gorman’s work that I’ve read and was an enjoyable read with likable characters, relatable experiences and circumstances I’m sure most women, including myself, have experienced.

Friends through their issues with weight, Katie, Ellie, Pixie, and Jane come together after deciding that instead of trying to fix what they think is wrong with themselves, they should embrace who they are and celebrate their diverse sizes. It’s this decision that leads them to create The Curvy Girls Club, a club where women (and some men) can try different things like salsa dancing and theater while putting their insecurities aside, even if for one evening. Wildly successful, the ladies are thrilled….until other issues in their separate lives threaten to derail their friendships and the very reasons they came together in the first place.

The things I really enjoyed about this book were the relatable moments each of these women experience. Feeling down on yourself because your jeans don’t fit, having a crush on a man you know will never reciprocate your feelings, being stuck in a relationship you don’t know how to end, always thinking the grass is greener on the other side…just to name a few. This story is really about embracing who you are, not just on the outside, but the person you are deep down and sometimes may be afraid to let out. I felt for these women at times and cheered them on at other times. I also wanted to shake them a time or two while reading…but overall it was a heartwarming story and I really enjoyed it!

Thank you, Michele, for another fun read!

The Vineyard by Michael C. Hurley…Review

?????????????????????????????????????????????

Synopsis:

From Michael Hurley, winner of the Chanticleer Reviews Grand Prize for his debut novel, THE PRODIGAL, comes a complex and ambitious tale of old money, young passion, and ancient mystery in a classic New England seaside town.

Dory Delano, Charlotte Harris, and Turner Graham have been drifting through life since their days as roommates at Smith College, ten years ago. Dory is resisting taking the reins of her family’s legacy and fortune even as she relishes the fabulous lifestyle it affords her in the fashionable seaside resort of Martha’s Vineyard. She invites her old friends to join her for a summer on the Vineyard in hopes of rediscovering the innocence of old days and healing new wounds. But hidden in their midst and unknown to all but a few, a reclusive—some say dangerous—fisherman wanders alone, fueling wild speculation about his purpose and his past. None of these women can imagine the events their encounter with the fisherman will set in motion, the shadow he will cast over their destinies, or the transformation that awaits the world they know.

My review:

The Vineyard is a work by author Michael C. Hurley and had piqued my interest after reading the synopsis. It is a story that straddles the line between genres I normally gravitate to and genres I don’t usually seem to pick up that often.

This book was rather intriguing and held my interest, primarily because of the mystery of “the fisherman” and what was going on with the group of three girlfriends who had come to Martha’s Vineyard for a reunion of sorts. Dory, the daughter of wealth and high society, Turner, the flighty spitfire who can’t seem to settle down, and Charlotte, the newly divorced mother who had last her only child.

Three unlikely and very different friends have come to spend some time together after a tragedy had broken one of them. Spend time healing and strengthening the bonds of their friendship. Along the way, they meet an odd stranger who will end up helping them in ways that no one will be able to explain. Even to this day.

This story really, in my mind, focused on just how far in different directions people’s lives go and the paths they travel down in their own personal journey. It also brought home just how special friendship is in life and no matter what, and no matter how unlikely the relationship, true friends will always be there. These women share so much in just one summer. There were health scares, bouts of serious depression, wedding plans, scandalous behavior, and even a few miracles that happen along the way. It was really amazing to see in one summer just how much these gals change throughout the book. They each began the summer as one person, and ended it completely changed.

If you’re in the mood from a departure from your normal reading material, and are looking for something intriguing and absorbing, The Vineyard is a book you should pick up. Thank you, Mr. Hurley, for a thought-provoking and enjoyable read!
