About Burning:

“Never say never.”

Gabe James never thought he’d suffer from a broken heart. He never thought he’d have to work for a living. And he sure as hell never thought he’d fall for a woman that carries a torch for the man that is trying to ruin his life.

Jade McKenzie has danced with demons most of her life, and just when she feels like the dark clouds have lifted, a pointless fight with an ex-boyfriend leaves her with a scarred face and ends her ballet career. Now she dances on a stage where the sway of her hips trumps the pirouettes of her past, a mask concealing her marred beauty. But nothing will stop the pain of shattered dreams.

Except love.

With Gabe’s career on the line and the threat of financial ruin blazing on the horizon, he’s guarded against a woman threatening to distract him even further when he needs his focus most. Jade can’t escape the memories of her past or Gabe’s heated glances—even if he swears that it’s her enthralling him. The two together are like kerosene and matches waiting for a spark. For a woman with no future and a man on the verge of losing hope, the only things left to cling to are their determined wills and the promise of a burning love.

Excerpt:

I drop his cockroach down the front of his button-down as we’re sitting on the train back to Manhattan, and catch a glimpse of his abs when he opens his jacket and shakes his shirt to let it drop out.

And … wow.

Brett has a great body, which he works at constantly. When he’s not at rehearsal or a performance, he’s at the gym. I wonder if Alessandro is a gym rat too.

We ride the L to Eighth Avenue and climb the stairs to the street. But we’re not halfway up the stairs when I feel something fall into my cleavage from my shoulder. I press my hand between my boobs to keep it from falling farther down my shirt and fish his cockroach out of my bra.

He stops and watches with a grin plastered to his face. “Well, that worked out better than I could have hoped.”

“Very mature.” I pinch the bug between my thumb and finger and shake it in his face. “When you least expect it …” I shove it in my pocket and run up the last few stairs. But then I don’t know where I’m going, so I have to wait.

Alessandro knows this, of course, and emerges from the pit a few seconds later with a smirk. “By all means, after you,” he says, sweeping his hand toward Eighth.

I glare and turn back for the subway. “You know what? I changed my mind.”

He has a handful of my jacket sleeve before I reach the stairs and spins me to face him, grasping both my upper arms.

My heart thumps hard as he catches me in his smoldering gaze. I can feel the heat of his body, even through all our layers of winter wear, and I shudder with the sudden mind-flash of how it would feel to be this close without all those layers. His lips part, as if he’s feeling the same rush I am, and I decide right in this heartbeat that if he kisses me, I’m going to kiss him back. I picture our lips meeting—imagine how his would feel as they moved on mine, how they would taste. His eyes flare as he dips his head, his lips pausing just inches from mine. I stop breathing again, caught between wanting to close those last few inches, and wanting to bolt.

But I can’t bolt.

Taking Something -Front Cover

About TAKING SOMETHING:

I know what you’re thinking. “You were such a jerk, Nick!” Believe me, I know I screwed up the best thing I had going in my life, but that was kind of my thing. I’d learned how to run cons before I could even form complete sentences, and I’d always been selfish. But I changed. Lila forgave me, my brother and I were getting along, and I was trying to make a name for myself in the music world.

At least that was what I was trying to do when I negotiated my way into the recording studio with pop superstar Sadie Sinclair. I thought it would be a piece of cake—charm my way into her heart and into her record label’s good graces.

Just when I thought I had it all figured out, I got mixed up in a web of lies, manipulation, and deception. A web that had me questioning my motives and desires altogether.

Was the fame and fortune really worth the price?

Taking Something - Full Cover Wrap

Excerpt:

“Tell me again how you plan on pulling this off?” Lila asked as she sat down on the edge of my bed. I had called her first thing that morning to tell her that I was heading to Los Angeles to produce Sadie’s album, and within the hour she was knocking on my front door to offer her insight and suggest what was and wasn’t acceptable Hollywood attire.

“Same way I pull everything off,” I answered quickly.

“I don’t think making her fall in love with you is going to work this time, Nick.”

“Seriously?” I smirked. “Now you’re doubting my abilities with women?”

“Not women in general. Just this one.”

“She’s no different than the rest, Rae.”

“Yes she is,” she disagreed.

“How?”

“Well, for starters, she’s like the most famous person on the planet. You’re not going to be able to make her fall for your charms, record the songs you want her to, and then just bolt when it’s over. She’ll run your name through the mud and people will listen. So it will have all been for nothing if you can never get another job.”

“What makes you think I’m going to bolt? We might actually fall in love.”

“Are you capable of that?”

Ouch. That hurt.

“I’m just saying that you might want to consider convincing her in a way that makes her not think she has a future with you. Nothing is worse than a scorned woman, Nick. Look at how Brynn took it. She told everyone that would listen how big of an asshole you were. It’s a wonder you made it through graduation without being murdered.”

Brynn was a mistake. She had run a couple cons with me a few years ago when Lila went and fell in love with my brother. I should have known better than to sleep with her, but dammit she was good looking. Not to mention a hellcat in the sack. I had needs. Sue me. It wasn’t my fault that she hadn’t understood our arrangement. Run cons and have sex. I never said anything about a relationship.

“I have other ways of making women bend to my will,” I said, trying to convince Lila.

“Do you?” She laughed, obviously not buying it. “Don’t get me wrong, Nick. You’re a good guy, deep down, but you know as well as I do that every single scam we ever ran was based on one thing. She’s gotta be different if you want to turn this chance into a career. You break her heart and you’re as good as done in that world.”

“Celebrities date and break up all the time.”

“You’re not a celebrity.” She shook her head. “I mean, you’re kind of known, but…”

“Are you here to give me a pep talk or completely kick me in the nuts? Jesus,” I sighed.

“You know what I mean,” she smiled. “She’s more well known. People will take her side. Believe me. I’ve read enough gossip magazines to know what happens to the guy who dumps America’s Sweetheart. Have you seen Kevin Federline lately?”

“I don’t even know who that is, Rae.”

Her eyes went wide and hands went up as if she’d proven her point. “Exactly.”

Review….The Descent by Alma Katsu

The Descent COVER

Book links:

Amazon  ~  Barnes & Noble  ~  Goodreads

Synopsis:

The final installment in the “mesmerizing” (Booklist, starred review) and addictive trilogy—find out who truly holds the key to Lanny’s heart and whether she’ll ever be reunited with her beloved in this gripping supernatural tale of magic, lust, and longing.

Lanore McIlvrae has been on the run from Adair for hundreds of years, dismayed by his mysterious powers and afraid of his temper. She betrayed Adair’s trust and imprisoned him behind a stone wall to save Jonathan, the love of her life. When Adair was freed 200 years later, she was sure that he would find her and make her existence a living hell. But things turned out far different than she’d imagined.

Four years later, Lanore has tracked Adair to his mystical island home, where he has been living in self-imposed exile, to ask for a favor. She wants Adair to send her to the hereafter so she may beg the Queen of the Underworld to release Jonathan, whom she has been keeping as her consort. Will Lanore honor her promise to Adair to return? Or is her intention to reunite with Jonathan at any cost?

Of all the forces of the universe, the most mysterious, confounding, and humbling is the power of love. The epic story of love and loss, magic and destiny that began with The Taker and sparked a chase around the world in The Reckoning comes to a surprising conclusion with The Descent.

My review:

The Descent is the final book in author Alma Katsu’s The Taker Trilogy.  After reading, and loving, the first two books I was beyond anxious to see how things would end for Lanny, Adair, Luke and Jonathan.  Well, the ending was far better and more awe-filled than I ever could have imagined.

After being curiously spared from Adair’s wrath over his imprisonment, Lanny had lived the last four years peacefully with Luke.  All was well until the nightmares began.  Nightmares of Jonathan being tortured in the underworld.  Lanny had been able to dismiss these for quite some time but now the dreams were more frequent and more violent.  Fearing these dreams were Jonathan calling her subconscious for help, she knew she had to do something about it.   Knowing full well there was only one person who could help her, she sets off to find that person.  Adair.  Her journey not only takes her to a secluded and remote island and to Adair’s home, but also to the underworld and to visits with many of the people and places that make up her past. The question remains, will she be able to find and help Jonathan before it’s too late or was this whole trip wasted effort?

I just finished this amazing book and I am still in awe over this series ending.  I have had mixed emotions since the very first book between Jonathan and Adair and who, if either, were the right choice for Lanny.  I was leaning heavily toward Adair but had a sneaking suspicion that he wasn’t to be trusted and that there were tricks hidden up his sleeve that would end up hurting Lanny.  On the flip side, I was tired of Jonathan and his inability to love Lanny the way she had been longing for since, well, forever.  Then there was Luke, the safe choice.  I wanted to like him much more than I did, but he was just too vanilla for Lanny.   More and more I kept pulling for Adair and I wanted so badly to believe he was honest in the astounding changes he’s made within himself.  Almost right up until the end, I wasn’t sure of who was right for Lanny.  My choice ended up being Adair.  But was it Lanny’s?  My lips are sealed.

Lanny’s journey into the underworld to rescue Jonathan was like a trip down memory lane and gave her a chance to revisit some of the characters we met earlier in the series.  Some were good visits, and some painful.  Peppered in between the chapters of her journey are snapshots of Adair’s earlier life and how he came to be the man he was today.  Magic, alchemy and the occult all playing a part in shaping him.  But one thing Ms. Katsu has done from the very beginning was subtly letting the reader know that nothing is what it seems…and oh boy, by the end of this story it was clear that what we had believed to be true was anything but.  The ending threw me and had me dumbstruck…but in the best kind of way!  Many secrets are revealed and puzzle pieces made to fit.

In a word? Brilliant.

This series is beautifully written with description that makes characters seem real and places seem tangible.  If you haven’t read the first two books, I do recommend reading them before this final installment for you to truly appreciate the web of relationships that has been spun from the very beginning.  Thank you, Ms. Katsu, for a trilogy that will stay with me for quite some time and for characters I have thoroughly enjoyed.

Review….Hunting Kat by P.J. Schnyder

Hunting Kat COVER

Book links:

 Amazon  ~  Barnes & Noble  ~  Goodreads

Synopsis:

As a mercenary, Kat Darah doesn’t have to pass for a normal human. On the edge of the solar system, she’s just another biped. Most of the time.

Nearing the end of his military tour, Lt. Christopher Rygard debates the idea of hanging up his uniform for good. Looking for answers at the bottom of a glass of scotch, he meets Kat. One shared night of mutual desire seems harmless. But when attackers hunting Rygard interrupt their tryst, Kat must reveal her other form, the predator beneath the human façade.

Together they embark on a dangerous mission a race against time to meet the enemy’s demands, while trying to deny the passion between them. Rygard is faced with a terrible choice in the face of duty: Report the existence of a human turned shape-shifter. Or forget he ever met her.

My review:

Hunting Kat is the first in author PJ Schnyder’s Triton Experiment series and is a sci-fi romance that I absolutely loved!

Finally somewhat able to deal with her painful past, mercenary Kat Darah has found a place in life where she belongs.  She has a Captain she trusts and one close friend and that’s been enough for her.  The only empty spot in her life is where the only man she had ever been close to once was.  He’s gone, though, and his death hit her hard.  But if Kat kept herself busy she didn’t have time to let the lack of a man bother her.  That was until her captain and best friend stuck her on leave for two days when their ship docked.  Now she was stuck on this mini-vacation and too much time to think.  Time to it the bar…of course just when Kat is looking to avoid being tricked by her friends into spending time with a man, she happens to find one that sends her senses into overdrive.  Maybe this wasn’t such a bad idea after all?

Lt. Christopher Rygard is at a crossroads in his life.  Deciding whether to stay in the military at the end of this tour or give up the only life he’s ever known.  A few things happened on the last few missions that haven’t sat right with him.  But you can’t exactly go against your CO’s orders.  Which puts him here, in this bar, wondering what the hell to do.  Luckily a sexy mercenary walks in and takes his train of thought away from anything other than her.  He’s set his sights on her and if there’s anything he’s sure of at this moment it’s that he will have her.

What starts out as a hot night of passion and sex turns into a fight for their lives when the very problems Rygard was pondering come pounding on their door.  Now, he has no choice but to right his wrongs and he needs the help of the sexy merc shifter.

What a fantastic story this was!  I think what I liked most was that it wasn’t overly futuristic.  It had just enough to create a vivid picture in my mind without being distracting with foreign terms.  Kat is one hell of a strong gal and I loved her spirit.  She’s loyal and takes her friendships very seriously. She knows how quickly a person can be taken from your life or how quickly things can go from good to bad.  Rygard is totally delicious with confidence and swagger to spare without being too cocky.  Their night together was written sinfully and sexily and damn the heat jumped off of my ereader!  PJ sure has a way with words…yum.  The mission they end up working on together had my pulse pounding and I was so worried for Kat! No spoilers from me but I will say that it ended with me feeling content but wanting more.  The sign of a great beginning to a series!

Thank you, PJ, for a kick ass story!  I can’t wait to see what the future holds for Kat!

Excerpt:

Suddenly alarmed, my eyes dart to the case as I watch the single remaining row of beautifully crafted cupcakes diminish until there are none left. My irritation flares as I glance at my number—97.

The beautiful stranger hands the clerk his credit card and waits to sign the slip.

“I was number 97, my number was before yours,” I say as he’s handed the bag that holds his treasure.

“Oh, I’m sorry. Here let me get the sales clerk’s attention so you don’t have to take another number,” he says.

I want to stomp my feet. I want to scream. I don’t want her attention. I don’t want another number. I want the cupcakes that he stole from me.

“Miss,” he calls draping his perfectly fit body over the case. She looks his way and with a charming grin he says, “Can you help this lovely lady? She missed her number being called.”

“Of course, I’m so sorry. How can I help you?” the girl asks averting her eyes from the man who looks like he should be on the cover of GQ magazine, over to me.

He smiles at me with a face that belongs on a billboard. “Don’t fall in.”

I swear he’s goading me. But then he tips his chin and a sexy, smoldering grin passes over his lips and I’m not so sure anymore. He turns to look at me one more time before he exits, and excitement flushes over my face. I nod a slight cursory acknowledgement, then he disappears and disappointment washes over me—he’s gone. Crap. The cupcakes are also gone. Double crap. And now I’m left wondering if he saw me staring at that flavor? Did he distract me on purpose so he could purchase them first? Urrr…I’m so angry right now I consider walking out, but when the clerk asks me what I’d like I settle for the Vanilla Milk Chocolate cakes—they are the mirror reflection of the black and whites, with vanilla cake and chocolate frosting, but they are not nearly as good.

About the author:

I live in Florida with my husband and four kids. I’ve always had a love for reading books and writing. Being an English major in college, I wanted to teach at the college level but that was not to be. I went on to receive an MBA and became a project manager until quitting to raise my family. I currently work part-time with my husband and full-time embracing one of my biggest passions—writing.

I wear a lot of hats! Writer, book-lover, wife, soccer-mom, taxi driver, and the all around go-to person of the family. However, I always find time to read. One of my favorite family outings use to be taking my kids to the bookstore or the library. Today, my oldest child is in college and my twins are juniors so they no longer go with me on these outings. And although I don’t need to go to the actual store anymore because I have the greatest device ever invented—a Kindle, I still do. There’s nothing like a paperback. So now my four year old and I make dates out of going to the bookstore–it’s time I love and cherish.

I like to believe in soulmates, kindred spirits, true friends, and Happily-Ever-Afters. I love to drink champagne, listen to music, and hopes to always stay young at heart. <3

Stud has to prove himself as the new President of the Destructors, and Sex Piston and her crew’s attitude isn’t helping. If he has to sacrifice his body to tame the bitch then that’s exactly what he’s going to do even if it means losing his heart in the battle.

SP Kiss My Ass

Excerpt:

Sex Piston smoothed her leather skirt down over her hips then smoothed down her tumbled hair before adjusting her breasts in the halter-top. When she was finished, she went to the door. Her hand was on the doorknob when Stud stopped her again.

“Sex Piston?”

“What?!” She turned back around.

“Come here.”

She started to ignore him, but for some inexplicable reason she found herself going back to him. He pulled her toward him when she was within reach, giving her a sweet kiss that tugged at her heartstrings. He then released her with a pat on the ass.

“Now you can go.”

She turned on her heel, leaving him in the bedroom, not even slamming the door behind her at his arrogant attitude. The kiss had been that good. He deserved a reward.

To soothe her bitchy side, she told herself that next time, she’d make him eat his nuts if he got mushy with her again.

About the author:

I was born in a small town in Kentucky. My family began poor, but worked their way to owning a restaurant. My mother was one of the best cooks I have ever known, and she instilled in all her children the value of hard work and education.

Taking after my mother, I’ve always loved to cook, and became pretty good if I do say so myself. I love to experiment and my unfortunate family has suffered through many. They now have learned to steer clear of those dishes. I absolutely love the holidays and my family puts up with my zany decorations.

For now, my days are spent at work and I write during the nights and weekends. I have two children who both graduate next year from college. My daughter does my book covers, and my son just tries not to blush when someone asks him about my books.

Currently, I am writing three series of books- The Last Riders that is fairly popular, The Dark Souls series, which is not, and The VIP Room, which we will soon see. My favorite book I have written is Soul Of A Woman, which I am hoping to release during the summer of 2014. It took me two years to write, during which I lost my mother and brother. It’s a book that I truly feel captures the true depths of love a woman can hold for a man. In case you haven’t figured it out yet, I am an emotional writer who wants the readers to feel the emotion of the characters they are reading. Because of this, Teased is probably the hardest thing I have written.

All my books are written for one purpose – the enjoyment others find in them and the expectations of my fans that inspire me to give it my best. In the near future I hope to take a weekend break and visit Vegas (hopefully be next summer). Right now, I am typing away on the next story and enjoying the holidays. Did I mention I love the holidays?

Synopsis:

The United States has collapsed. Those citizens who are left are in one of two classes. One: Citizens who have undergone forced lobotomies, as mandated by the United Nations. Two: Those who fight against their tyranny.

Petra Kingsley falls under both classes. She falls in line with the drones, pretending her procedure worked. Four years she’s existed among their ranks, hiding in plain sight, being worked to the bone and starved almost to death.

Lawson is a bounty hunter of sorts. His target isn’t the guilty, it’s those who are lost in the folds of a broken society.

When he spots Petra working in the masses, he stops at nothing to help her escape.

But he has no idea who exactly he’s helping—and who will now be hunting them both?

Year 2031

Subject 99856691

This is how I’m gonna die. Not by machine or a shot to the head. I wouldn’t be lucky enough to just get thrown into the furnace. No, this effing hangnail—well, used to be hangnail, would be the end of me. A throbbing, pustule filled toe cavity would evolve into a full blown infection and then sepsis. Yes, death by sepsis. Now that sounds like my luck. Fever and a bum toe, so damned classy.

I would’ve dug into myself, pulled out a lung and happily traded it for a dollar store first aid kit and some toe nail clippers at that point—I really would’ve. I’d picked the object of my malcontent from my toe with a sliver of metal I’d found on the ground in the factory. I didn’t often find metal in my factory, so I scooped it up at once, hoping the cameras didn’t detect my movement. That night by the light of a flashlight I’d stolen from one of the maintenance drones, I fashioned a rudimentary pair of tweezers out of the sharp, ragged metal. They didn’t work very well. Jerking and pulling, it took me nearly a damned hour to release the painful, jagged hangnail from its solitary confinement on the side of my toe. And I used the same tool to break through the bubble which had taken residence in its place. Hissing through my teeth at the sea sick green globule emerging from my toe, I wished for hydrogen peroxide—or that new skin stuff that burned like glowing brimstone itself. It released its prisoner of infection and throbbed in protest. I washed it the best I could with grime water courtesy of the hyper-recycled water bottle I’d once found behind the building. I used it to steal water from the bathroom in the factory.

I’d never stolen in my life before the collapse.

I’d once perfected the good girl routine, at least superficially. I dressed the part, cutesy vintage dresses that showed just the peep of a knee and nothing more. I kept my hair at that length, below shoulder—so that I could be accused of neither having short hair nor long. I certainly didn’t want to anger anyone with the length of my hair. My shoes were not flats which registered goody two shoes, but they weren’t too high, because that registered whore. I made straight A’s, I smiled when prompted and I never—ever moved an inch out of my little square. That’s what was expected of me. And I didn’t let anyone down.

But that time of my life and my family were long gone.

I tore a strip of cloth from my blanket and tied the wound up in a makeshift bandage. It would have to do until the next day. Then I’d have to take it off, letting the open, gaping hole exposed to the elements, the filth of the streets and the dirt of my work. It would get infected for sure. A wound that before could be cured with a hefty co-pay and five minutes of the good doctor’s time. But all the doctors, nurses and anyone else who had the knowledge or knowhow they needed had been swept away to other countries.

Robots didn’t need medical care.

She is a stay at home mom to three wild children and three boisterous dogs and her high school sweetheart husband encourages her daily. Between writing books, she loves to read and watch sappy 80’s movies. Favorite things: ice cream, anything purple, roller derby and any kind of music she can get her hands on. If you’re looking for her, try looking in the swamp, she’s probably duct taping something under the shade of a Cypress tree.
