Excerpt

As she stepped up to the lane again, he should’ve tossed another cocky taunt at her, some barely disguised innuendo, but he could only watch. Despite her protests regarding bowling, they were having a good time. His head had been quiet so far. Not once in the last hour and a half had he thought of that fucking cell in Iraq. The crowd around him, the deafening noise, hadn’t triggered anything ugly, because he was lost in her, in keeping her smiling and laughing.

By the fourth game two hours later, they both played so lousy he laughed every time he stepped up to the lane. Cassie, though, was ahead by five points. This game would decide who won his little bet.

As it turned out, his ball curved off into gutter. Leaving all ten damn pins still standing.

Cassie let out a victorious squeal behind him, meeting him at the ball return with a grin plastered across her face and her chest puffed out with pride. She stepped into his personal space and poked him in the chest. “You. Are. Mine. I won, fair and square, soldier boy.”

He leaned down and touched his nose to hers. She might have won, but he could still pull a few punches of his own. “I’ve always been yours. Believe me, princess, I’m going to enjoy letting you have your way with me.”

That got her. Cassie froze, heat flaring in her eyes. A heady shiver moved through her as she stared up at him. “So, what now?”

“Well, that depends on you, but”—he leaned his head beside her ear and lowered his voice—“I’m dying to peel you out of those jeans.”

Her breathing hitched. When he met her gaze again, she stared at him for one tension-filled moment, grabbed his hand, and marched off, tugging him behind her. He followed in silence out of the bowling alley and into the quiet of the night. She didn’t say a word or even turn to look at him as she led him to where his brother’s car was parked at the back of the lot. Once there, she pressed him against the driver’s door. Hands braced on his chest, she lifted onto her toes and captured his mouth, all fire and determination. She pushed her tongue inside, her kiss hot and desperate, and he was pretty sure they were both shaking.

As suddenly as she’d kissed him, she released him, pausing a moment to catch his gaze. Hers was filled with the same need that had him tongue-tied. Then she moved around to the passenger side of the car.

His fingers shook as he dug his keys from his pocket and hit the fob. Once the doors unlocked, she climbed inside. When he got in after her, she reached over and threaded her fingers with his. “You should get this car moving, because in about two seconds, I’m going to climb into that seat with you. I need you. I…”

She shook her head, glancing over at him, vulnerability rising in her eyes.

She didn’t have to say the words. What she meant hung in the air, igniting a solar flare between them. She needed what he needed. Something soft and slow. A complete meshing of bodies. He had a feeling they really wouldn’t be sleeping tonight. Not out of physical need, but the soul-deep desire to be as close as possible. To make up for lost time. Three years apart was a lifetime, and the need in her eyes, mixing with the tears hovering at the edges of her lashes, told him she thought something similar.

He squeezed her fingers, then pushed the button to start the car and moved their combined hands to the gearshift. “Me, too, baby. Me too.”

I am not a huge fan of reading books out of order. I have a crazy case of OCD that just won’t put up with that kind of non-sense. However, I was able to power through and read the seventh book in the Seven Forbidden Arts series by Charmaine Pauls!
I CAN’T TELL YOU HOW HAPPY I AM THAT I GAVE IT A CHANCE!
This was my first Charmaine Pauls book and it definitely will not be the last. I can’t wait to read the first six books while (un)patiently waiting for the release of the eighth book.
In this story, we meet Sara and Wayne. Sara is a ranger with the South African National Parks board and, thankfully, she really has a way with animals. Wayne is an introverted ex-con who is trying to get back to his life after serving time for murder.
The two meet after Sara has an unfortunate run in with two of Knysna’s most notorious troublemakers, Nelis and Thinus Theron. They make a living as Woodcutters, like most people in town, and they harbor a pure hatred toward the SAN Parks Board. Nelis and Thinus decide to welcome Sara to town by drugging her food with mushrooms before she takes off on a hike in the woods. They follow her with plans to attack her, but Wayne is hot on their trail and rescues Sara before too much damage is done. When he realizes that she was drugged, he takes her back to his cabin to get her cleaned up and let her sleep it off.
“There were a few scrapes over her ribs and a cut on her hip, but nothing serious. He sat down on the edge of the sofa and dabbed disinfectant with a cotton swab onto the red lines that marred her golden skin. She stared at the fire, not at his face, so he let his eyes wander over the curves of her body. Lying like that with her knees slightly drawn up, the dip of her waist emphasized the swell of her hips and breasts. Her body looked like the gentle surf of a lake on a windy day. In the light of the fire her tanned complexion had a warm glow. The underside of her breast peeked from the towel. An image of the curve, small and firm, popped into his mind. Her areolas would be dark and her nipples hard, sweet on a man’s tongue. Desire filled his veins, flooding his brain and hardening his dick. It had been too long.”
Later that night, after the drugs have worn off a bit, Sara drops a bomb on Wayne about why her current assignment has brought her to Knysna. She needs to locate the near-extinct elephants that roam a certain part of land in that area. Wayne’s land, to be exact. She informs him of a proposition that the SAN would like him to consider. The land that Wayne owns is the only reminder that he has left of his family and he is hell-bent on keeping it in the family.
Despite Wayne’s stubbornness and outright admissions that he will fight her tooth-and-nail before ever giving up his land freely, Sara can’t fight the attraction that is growing toward Wayne.
“He’d given her a pair of his boxer shorts, sweatpants, and a T-shirt. The fabric smelled of him, of cedar and pine. It was the intoxicating scent she’d noticed in the truck, when he’d driven her to his cabin. She’d also noticed his hard body and the size of his enormous hands as he’d taken care of the cuts on her skin. Her body had taken notice of him in ways it had never noticed a man. Moisture had pooled between her legs and her breasts had tingled when he’d run his fingertips over her sides, but he was a stranger and she was drugged. Worse, he was the owner of the land she had to reclaim. Best not to notice his outdoorsy, addictive smell, or his big, callused hands.”
Then, when some out-of-towners travel to Knysna for a hunting expedition start mysteriously dying, everyone in town is pointing the finger at Sara. Between Wayne’s sordid past, the land reclamation, and the accusations over the hunter’s deaths, will Wayne and Sara’s connection be severed before it has a chance to grow?
An amazing, mysterious, fun read that I wasn’t able to put down! Charmaine Pauls knocked it out of the park!

(This excerpt is unedited and subject to change.)Wayne West looked up from his oxtail stew when the female walked into the bar. Her ponytail bounced as she approached the counter where Jack lifted a wary head. A few brown tendrils that had escaped the elastic band feathered over her cheeks. Green eyes, the color of a new leaf caught in the morning sun, smiled in tune with her generous lips, at no one in particular, because she wasn’t looking at him, Nelis, or Thinus. In fact, she seemed oblivious to their existence, never mind the stares from the scruff cousins at the corner table facing the TV screen.

Khaki pants stretched over a tight ass as she propped one cheek onto a barstool, resting a hiking boot on the foot bar. It was the green vest with the SANParks emblem on the breast that held Wayne’s attention.

“Diet Coke, please,” she said to Jack, dropping a day hiking bag at her feet.

Thinus nudged Nelis with an elbow, his cracked lips peeling into a grin under his blond moustache. Jack tore his eyes away from the rugby match and straightened his heavy frame. Jack had seen the logo too, even if his eyes went back to the screen as he banged a can of Coke down on the counter and slid a glass her way. Jack had eyes in the back of his head. For a mammoth sloth he was deceptively perceptive.

“Thanks.”

The husky voice was too old for her young body. She cracked open the can and took a long drink without bothering with the glass. There was something poetic about the arc of her neck and the swallows that rippled her throat, like the graceful cast of a fishing line and the peaceful bob of the fly on a stream.

She rested her arms on the counter.

“What’s on the menu?”

“Oxtail,” Jack said, his eyes glued on the game.

Her brow pleated. “Do you have anything vegetarian?” Jack graced her with an incredulous glare and said, “Oxtail,” before turning back to the screen.

“Sandwich? Anything that hasn’t been killed?”

Thinus’ voice rose from the corner. “This ain’t no fancy pansy roadhouse in the city, darlin’.”

Wisely, she ignored him.

“What do you serve with the oxtail? Salad?”

“Rice.” Jack popped a matchstick in his mouth.

“Haven’t had that in a while,” she said with sarcasm, but not without humor. “I’ll have a bowl of rice.”

Jack turned his head an inch and called, “One special, no meat,” to Johannes at the back.

The woman either didn’t notice the hostility or decided to ignore it. Either way, she was a fool walking into the Quteniqua Woodcutters Bar with a South African National Parks Board jacket. Wayne brought the fork to his mouth, watching from hooded eyes while Nelis and Thinus giggled like high school girls.

“Where’s the bathroom?” she said.

Jake threw a thumb over his shoulder.

She picked up her backpack and made her way to the ladies room at the end of the short corridor.

Nelis and Thinus exchanged a look. After a second, Thinus got up and headed for the toilets. Wayne wiped his mouth on a napkin. This was what he’d hoped wouldn’t happen. His chair scraped over the hardwood floor. When Thinus reached the corridor, Wayne was already there, blocking his way.

“Whazup, West?” Thinus said, planting his feet wide and hooking his thumbs into his belt.

“I don’t know, Thinus,” Wayne drawled. “Was just about to ask you the same thing.”

“Stand aside, man.”

Instead of moving, Wayne braced his shoulder on the wall. “Need the can so bad you’re going to piss in your pants?”

Thinus took a step forward. “I’m warning you, man.”

Wayne smirked. Thinus didn’t bully people who had their fists free. He only punched when they were tied up.

“The lady’s busy. You’ll wait.”

“It’s urgent.” Thinus grinned, exposing the perfect, artificially white teeth that had cost his daddy a fortune. “The lady may enjoy it.”

“Outside,” Wayne said with a flick of his head.

Thinus’ stance changed. His arms stood wide away from his body. “What?”

“I said piss outside, or the only thing the lady will enjoy is how far you’ll fly when I use you for discus practice.”

“I’m not a dog! Dogs piss outside.”

“Well, then,” Wayne gave him a lazy smile, “you’re going to have to hold, or it’ll be in your pants.”

“I swear to God, I’ll piss on your shoes,” a red-faced Thinus spat.

“Better take it outside.” Wayne narrowed his eyes. “Because if you soil these boots, you’ll lick them clean and polish them with this nice new shirt your mama ironed for you.” He touched the collar of the spanking white shirt.

A laughing snort came from Jack.

Thinus’ cheeks lit up like two poison apples. He slapped Wayne’s hand away and pushed a bony finger in his face. “Don’t you forget yourself, now.”

Wayne stiffened at the threat. His jail sentence had long since passed, but Thinus still held the conviction like a sword over his head.

“Yeah.” Thinus pulled himself to his full height, his stance filling with self-confidence as he sniffed Wayne’s guilt. “That’s right, murderer. Remember who you are.”

Thinus wasn’t stupid enough to push it. With that verbal victory he stalked outside. It was best to keep him in sight, in case he got it into his dim-witted skull to fetch a gun from his truck. The woman was still in the restroom. What was it with females that took so long?

Leaning in the exit, he waited until Thinus had relieved himself on the tire of his truck, like the fucking dog he said he wasn’t. The green Jeep parked next to his battered Land Cruiser had to belong to the woman. Thinus zipped himself up and gave Wayne a triumphant smile as he shouldered him on his way back into the bar. By that time, the food had arrived and the woman was back on her seat.

She stared at the plate. “There’s gravy on the rice.”

Jack lifted an eyebrow as if to say, ‘So’?

“Gravy comes from meat,” she said.

Jack crossed his arms. “Take it or leave it.”

She sighed, mumbled something about being starved, and then dug in with gusto. After two forkfuls she stopped chewing and frowned. “There’s something wrong with the gravy.”

“Is there something wrong with the gravy, West?” Jack called across the room without diverting his attention from the game.

The woman turned in her seat. She could’ve looked at Thinus or Nelis, but she didn’t. She fixed her leafy green eyes on him, assessing him as if she noticed him for the first time. Maybe she did. Not that he wanted to be noticed.

“No,” he said, a word cut out of cardboard that didn’t carry meaning or significance.

Two more seconds slurred by, the world moving slower, as she probed him in the way people did when they looked for telltale signs of lies. Her gaze wasn’t condescending, or fearful, or judgmental. It was nothing like the looks he’d gotten used to. Curious, maybe. Questioning. If the light in those luminescent eyes were any indication, he’d go as far as to say friendly. Finally, she shrugged and went back to her meal.

The sound of cheering from the flat screen on the wall and the Saturday vibe had gone flat, like the lukewarm rockshandy in his glass. No longer enjoying the game, all he wanted was the peace of the forest and the solitude of his cabin, but he didn’t dare leave until the woman was gone.

She finished every morsel on her plate and asked for the bill. When it came, she stared at Jack. “You can’t charge me full price for a bowl of rice.”

“Not my problem if you don’t eat meat.”

She shook her head but didn’t argue. She left a bill on the counter and lifted her backpack. “The day trail, where does it start?”

Jack moved the matchstick from one corner of his mouth to the other. “Yellow.”

“Follow the yellow markers,” Nelis chirped in. “The path’s well walked out. Can’t miss it.”

“Thanks.” Without another word, she headed for the forest, leaving the Jeep parked in front.

Another ten minutes passed before the cousins got to their feet. There were still twenty minutes left of the match. Ah, hell, he’d kind of expected it but had hoped it wouldn’t come to this. Trouble was the last thing he needed. He couldn’t take the cousins down in front of witnesses, not unless he wanted to risk his parole. Best to give them a head start.

“It ain’t your fight,” Jack said as he pushed his chair back five minutes later.

“Who says I’m joining?”

“She’s SAN. You saw it.”

“Doesn’t mean she deserves to get hurt.”

Jack shook his head. “You’ve got enough enemies.”

“With friends like you, who needs enemies?” he replied drily.

“Fuck you. She had no place coming in here.”

“Yeah.” Wayne tipped his leather ranger hat. “See you.”

Outside, he stopped for his eyes to adjust to the bright sunlight. The cousins’ Chevy was still there. A glance through the back window assured him the dickheads hadn’t taken their hunting rifles. Good. He started jogging toward the path.

* * * *

Sahara Graham entered the coolness of the forest. Yellow and blackwood trees stretched thirty yards high into the sky, their dense foliage a canopy that threw an eternal shadow over the damp soil below where ferns uncurled delicately. Fungus and moss marked the trunks of the trees. As composting leaves and twigs crunched under her boots, birds scattered to the sky, calling out her presence in alarm. The deeper into the undergrowth she moved, the darker the forest grew, embracing her with isolation and quietness. Not a cricket chirped or a frog croaked in the heart of the Knysna sanctuary where elephants still wandered wild. Not even the highest branches rustled with a breeze. After a good ten-minute hike, she cut away from the path, following the trail of broken foliage. Not far from the forest border she found the first stump. The remains of the amputated trunk stood raw and open in a small clearing, like a severed limb bleeding sap. The wood poachers had cut away the precious cycads at the foot of the yellowwood to make space for their illegal work. She knelt next to a small grave of the dead plants, their roots shriveled and their leaves black. A cycad only grew one inch per year. These had been older than several hundred, judging by their trunks, nine hundred maybe. Dusting the soil from her knees, she moved to the yellowwood. Her fingers skimmed the rings. Four hundred years.

“Your only fault was your value,” she said into the stillness of the forest.

No sound came in reply. It was as if the trees watching over the graveyard of the massacre still held their breath. She turned in a circle, taking in the destruction, its only motivation greed. Sadness filled her heart. Not only were the poachers destroying the forest, but also the last remaining habitat of the elephants.

There were too little of the Knysna elephants left who still roamed the forest, the last of its kind who lived unfenced. Through the years, these graceful and intelligent animals had learned how to survive in the deepest and darkest parts of the protected forest. Despite their big bodies weighing several tons, necessity and survival instinct had taught them to move soundlessly. Hunted mercilessly for their ivory, the animals that had once graced this part of the western coast of South Africa had retreated farther into the dense nature, adapting from a diet of grass to one of forest foliage. Now, the Xhosa tribe living on the northern border of the forest had reported that the bull and the two calves had gone, and that only the old female, who they’d named The Matriarch, was left.

Her job was to ensure the species would survive. Her tasks were twofold–find out how many elephants were left and put a stop to the smuggling of the wood to protect their habitat. Some would say both goals were impossible. The elephants were too good at hiding, forever on the move, and the smugglers made too much money with the priceless yellowwood to give up without a violent fight. Elephant trackers before her had always failed, but she had something on her side that the trackers didn’t have. She had a special gift, an ability that made it possible for her to connect with animal spirits. As for the wood, that part of the job would be tougher.

She left the plundered clearing and ventured back to the path, an uneasiness creeping up on her. The feeling was more than a heaviness of thought and mind because of the evidence of the theft she’d witnessed. A sensation of physical unwellness had taken root in her body. It was like a faint nausea that boiled in her stomach. She couldn’t quite put her finger on it.

Usually, she’d be in her element. In nature was where she experienced her art the strongest, but for some reason she felt disconnected from the animal life. The birds, one of the easier species for her to command, closed themselves to her. They flittered away as if she was foe instead of friend. Her body started to feel heavy and her steps slow, as if gravity had increased tenfold. Wiping away the sweat from her forehead, she leaned against the wooden rail that marked the path, trying to rebalance herself, but instead the world tipped and the landscape crinkled like a heat wave.

Damn, she really didn’t feel well. The perspiration on her skin wasn’t from the exercise. It was the kind of sweat she broke into before emptying her stomach. Tilting her head back, she sucked in the pure air, but the sky started turning. She looked down quickly to find an anchor for her gaze, only to spot a nest of giant snakes around the base of a tree. Snakes didn’t scare her, but these slithered over each other in menacing twirls and loops, loops that looked like a noose meant for strangling. With a loud shriek she scurried backward, escaping the spiked, sizzling tongues that came at her. She reached into the depths of her mind, but her thoughts couldn’t reach these Medusa-like creatures. The sound of their rattle vibrated all the way to her bones. It was a song that could sharpen teeth like a metal file.

Tsssk, tsssk.

Why couldn’t she control them? What was wrong with her? What had happened to her art? The bodies advanced on her, a cesspool of squirming, sand-colored snakes. She reiterated but stumbled over the roots of a tree and fell right into the lap of a giant oak. She pushed up with her back against the trunk, the rough bark biting into her skin with a magnified intensity. Her tongue was thick in her dry mouth. The smell of plant decay and wet earth was a cool vapor that filtered through her nose. All of her senses were heightened.

A flash caught her eye. Something sifting down. It was a huge, brown butterfly. No, a moth. A big, fluttering moth. More followed. They flapped their wings around her face, the poisonous powder of their wings dust particles suspended in the wedge of sun that cut through the branches. She swatted at them, jerking her head from side to side. The roots around her lifted. They weren’t the motionless and solid roots of a tree. They were snakes that writhered under her body.

Her scream punctured the silence, and its echo was a laugh. Male laughter.

In the path, surrounded by falling moths, stood two men, the guys from the bar.

She lifted a hand. “Help. Please.”

The skinny, tall one with the moustache jabbed his friend in the ribs. “Wow, she’s trippin’ big time, man.”

“How much did you put in?” the friend said.

“Only a quarter of a bankie.”

The stickman gurgled another laugh in his throat.

“This is gonna be fun.”

In her strange state of mind, her thoughts were clear enough to realize what was happening. They’d drugged her. Back at the bar. She pushed to her feet, feeling the effort. Shit, she was heavy. Too slow. They’d catch her before she’d taken two steps.

She held up a finger, backtracking. “Stay away, or else…”

The men glanced at each other and burst out laughing.

“Come, now, darlin’,” the stickman said. “We ain’t gonna hurt ya.” His friend, a thickset man with black hair and thin slits for eyes, took a step forward. “Just gotta stay still and Thinus, here,” he pointed at his friend, “and me will show you a real good time.

” She backed away farther. “I’ll have you arrested. I work for the government.”

The fat guy unbuckled his belt. “Now, where’s the crime in sharin’? You gave us your consent,” he said as if it was a big word. “Didn’t she, Thinus?”

“Consent,” Thinus repeated.

She kept on putting distance between them. A weapon. She needed a weapon.

“What’s with the waitin’?” Thinus said. “Get her, already.”

“Nah.” His friend started taking off his shoes. “I want a good chase.”

She didn’t wait to hear more. Spotting a rock in the path, she grabbed the heavy stone and hurled it at the fat man. It zinged past his head, missing his ear by an inch.

“Oooh.” Thinus cackled like a scrawny hen and jumped up and down. “She’s got claws.”She couldn’t fight them off, not the two of them, but she was fast. At least, she was fast when not drugged. Still, flight was her only chance. She turned and broke into a sprint.

Her heart protested and her limbs refused to cooperate. It was like in a big, bad dream, running in place. No matter how hard she pushed her body forward, she was not gaining ground. Too damn slow. Footsteps followed, advancing. Closer. From somewhere farther behind there was a third voice.

“Stop!”

She worked her elbows. There was a breath in her neck and a tug on her ponytail. They had her! She jerked with all of her might, a sharp sting assaulting her scalp that had her eyes tear up, mixing with the salty sweat that ran from her forehead. It burned and blinded her, but she was free.

“Stop!” that far-off voice said again.

Moths descended and branches reached down with knuckled fingers. All she knew, was she had to run. She had to run without looking back. She bumped her toe on a rock and her body went down in slow motion. Before she hit the ground, she managed to correct her balance and maintain her movement, flying forward, and then there was nothing under her feet. The nightmare continued as she treaded air. The dream changed from being stuck in place to falling, falling…

EXCERPT

His large hand presses against my knee under the table. “Can we talk?”

Jesus, his touch. It’s the first time I’ve felt the weight of his palm on me since Aspen. It’s heavy. Huge. Callused. Instinctually I shift forward, my body no longer mine to command. He doesn’t move his hand. Just his thumb. It presses harder, dragging downward. I grip my armrests to keep from sliding to the floor. He stares at me, waiting for my answer.

Yes. No. Maybe. I choose silence.

The way our lives are entrenched with our friends, I’ll have to spend time with him, and I can’t keep pretending I can block him out. Moving here was about starting fresh, which means letting go of this grudge. But talking about Aspen could stir up more feelings, the same way the experience spurred my need to find Rose. If we talk about our time in the hot tub, it could unhinge me further.

Our waiter arrives to take our order, and Nico’s thumb moves again, a tiny brush, his skin against mine, sending a pulse between my thighs. My sanity plummets. I shout, “Chicken,” like a lunatic as I push away from the table.

Nico’s hand slides from my knee, but his eyes don’t waver. I feel his gaze on my back as I hurry to the bathroom. The second I get inside, I close the door and lean against it, thankful it’s not a public room with several stalls. I take a few deep breaths.

How can that bit of contact turn me inside out? The smallest touch?

Memories of his other touches flip through my mind, snippets of skin and ink, flashes of ecstasy.

My back arching.

His fingers exploring.

The curve of his inked shoulder.

His huge hands.

The sheer size of him.

We might not have had sex, and the details may be fuzzy, but there’s no doubt it was the hottest night I’ve ever had. What isn’t fuzzy is the time I spent with him in the hot tub prior, and how he took advantage of my vulnerability.

Goddamn Nico. And Goddamn Aspen.

Hooked on Trouble is the third and final book in Kelly’s series, Over the Top.  And it’s one I have been dying to heard.

“To show someone rise, you have to show them fall.”

This is Nico and Raven’s story.  And let me tell you, it’s one hell of an emotional ride.  Raven has always kept her heart locked up.  She doesn’t do feelings and has always been one to put her feelings in little compartments and lock them away forever.  Until Nico.  Until that one night she gives him a glimpse of who she is.  And he destroys her.

Nico sees himself as the only solid foundation for his family.  He’s been trying to help his brother from ending up in prison like their father and keeping his sister on the straight and narrow and away from drugs.  It’s a lot for one person to handle, but he does it because he feels it’s his duty.  But only a few know of his family’s issues – he doesn’t open up about that part of his life much.  And when he meets Raven, he keeps that part under lock and key.  A heartbreaking mistake.

Nico and Raven realize they need to handle their problems or risk causing friction and possibly losing friends over their issues.  But what they can’t deny is their attraction to one another – something that has no diminished since their last and only night together.

Nico is a huge mushy marshmallow.  He may a very strong cop on the outside, but inside, he’s all feelings and mush.  And he’ll do anything and everything to protect those he loves.  Raven is the complete opposite.  Even though they’ve had very similar upbringings, they made different decisions and that’s cause Raven is be more hard and rigid.  But something in Nico brings out the soft side of her.

“Our past choices shape us, but our future ones define us.”

I love Nico and Raven’s story.  It’s not all butterflies and rainbows.  There are some dark tales that work their way into their lives.  And it causes them both to re-evaluate things and their relationship.

Kelly has written another amazing story and I am so glad that we finally got Nico and Raven’s story. I knew it wasn’t going to be a fluffy romance but I loved how she mixed the hard edges with some soft edges – made the story even better.  And I love reading about Shay and Kolton along with Lily and Sawyer. I hate to see them end but all their stories were beautiful and I loved each journey.

I look forward to reading more from Kelly in the future.

Lethal Game

by Katie Reus
Red Stone Security Series
Publication Date: January 10, 2017
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Read the action-packed finale of the USA Today bestselling Red Stone Security series!

He broke her heart.

Graysen’s betrayal nearly destroyed Isa a year ago. Now that she’s working for Red Stone Security, she’s managed to piece her life back together after a rough year and a broken heart. Then he appears back in her life and makes it clear he’s not going anywhere until she gives them a second chance. A chance she refuses to take.

Now he’s back to claim what’s his.

Graysen’s never gotten over Isa and he knows he never will. It’s his fault she walked away, but he can’t seem to let her go. He quit his job with the CIA and called in every favor he had to get hired by Red Stone Security just to be near her again. But Isa doesn’t care that he’s desperate to make things right between them—she wants nothing to do with him. He doesn’t blame her, but he’s not willing to give her up. When they’re cornered by lethal terrorists, everything changes. Graysen and Isa will have to find a way to work together if they want to survive. Only then will he be able to convince her to claim the chance at happiness the past stole from them.

Excerpt

“Don’t give me that look,” Graysen snarled as he slid into the seat across from Harrison. He’d been waiting for that CEO to leave.

Harrison had started to respond when the bartender who’d been serving Graysen earlier approached the table. “You leaving the bar?”

“Yeah, joining a friend.” He tried not to snarl at her, since she was just doing her job. “I’ll close out my tab.” He pulled out a few bills and left them on the table. “Keep the change.”

Her eyes widened slightly but she just nodded and pocketed the money—then not so subtly left a piece of paper with her phone number on it in its place. “I get off in an hour.”

He didn’t respond as she left, but crumpled the paper up once he was sure she wasn’t looking and tossed it into the empty ice bucket. He didn’t want anyone but Isa.

“What were you thinking, showing up here?” Harrison’s voice was razor sharp.

“I had to see her.” Graysen knew he’d be meeting with Isa tomorrow, but the urge to get just a glimpse of her again in person was too much. The woman was his obsession. After a year of no contact, no hearing her voice, he was at his breaking point.

Harrison scrubbed a hand over his face, the action out of place on the normally stoic man. “She’s going to be pissed tomorrow.”

“She’ll get over it.” Isa had to. She had to forgive him. He couldn’t live with anything less. He wouldn’t. “And I’m bringing you a huge job.” Graysen had gone to Keith Caldwell instead of Harrison, asking Harrison’s father—also the founder of Red Stone Security—to hire him now that he’d left the Agency. He was more than qualified, but he didn’t just want a job. He wanted to specifically work with Isa. So he’d brought an exclusive government contract Red Stone wouldn’t want to turn down. It was practically tailored for Isa’s expertise. If she was forced to work with Graysen, he could remind her how good they’d been together. And he could work on getting her to forgive him. Which…was the biggest problem.

“Yeah, and you never let me forget it,” Harrison muttered.

Graysen lifted a shoulder. He wasn’t sorry. He’d do anything to get Isa back. Once she’d left him he’d gone into a downward spiral. After trying to get her to forgive him, apologizing too many times to count only to be shut out, he’d drowned himself in vodka for about a month until he’d realized he was being a giant pussy. He wasn’t just going to let her go. So he’d spent the last few months working on getting a huge contract to bring to Red Stone when he left the CIA. It had been a balancing act, getting this contract while still working for the government. But a lot of people owed him favors and he’d cashed in a ton of them. She was that important to him. Hell, she was the most important thing to him.

“If she refuses to work with you—”

“She won’t.”

Harrison eyed him over the top of his beer, his expression unconvinced. Harrison was a couple years younger than Graysen but he’d been a damn good agent back when they’d been in Black Ops together. They hadn’t worked together often, but Harrison was one of the few people Graysen truly respected. The man had a solid code of honor and he was a patriot. Maybe more of a Boy Scout than Graysen, but that wasn’t necessarily a bad trait.

Televisions blared inane sports bullshit above them and people were talking and laughing with no concern for anyone around them. Whereas he knew how many people were at the bar right now, the specific layout of the restaurant, how many exits there were—which were closest—and how many people were outside the window. No doubt Harrison could detail all that information as well.

“Mara’s pissed about the whole situation,” Harrison said.

“You told her?” He snapped out the words louder than he’d planned, but no one around them seemed to notice.

“Yep.” No apology from Harrison either.

“Is she going to tell Isa?” Because Harrison had made it clear to Graysen that Isa meant a lot to Mara. And Mara had been a spook too. Graysen wasn’t exactly sure which branch but he guessed MI6.

“No, but she wants to.”

“After tomorrow it won’t matter.”

“Look…just don’t get your hopes up about this.” For the first time since Graysen had known Harrison, the guy actually looked and sounded concerned. For him.

“About what?”

“About Isa. She’s never mentioned you, never mentioned an ex, nothing. And what you did was… I don’t know if you can come back from that.”

Graysen didn’t respond, just turned to stare out the window at the passing traffic and the bright lights of downtown Miami. Yeah, he’d screwed up good. That was the understatement of the century.

He’d infiltrated her father’s business, lied about who he was, seduced her and broken her heart—and inadvertently gotten her father killed.

If it was the last damn thing he did, he was going to make things right between them.

Juliette Smith, star tennis player, is starting over at a new university. Traumatized by hazing at her last school, all she wants is to attend classes, win tennis matches, and be left the hell alone.

She should have known her coach, Drew King, would be a problem from the moment he flexed his sexy-as-hell forearms.

What happens when you mix a pissed-off woman with a bunch of snooty teammates and a hot coach?

A heated match, complete with team politics and a forbidden game of singles with the coach.

It’s reckless and hot until one of them taps out.

Unable to admit she may be better off as a double, Jules is convinced she needs to play the game of life alone. Then life throws her a lob and she runs smack into her past.

Coach King is back, and he wants to take control of the game. But she’s not certain she wants his advice when it comes to the life she’s built.

The power struggle is on, but this time off the court.

Rachel has done it again!!  Another smashing story that grips my heart strings.

Break Point is a very forbidden, second chance love story.  However, it’s not without it’s ups an downs and huge surprises.  This story may be light on the big drama but it filled with love, angst and new beginnings.

“Jules, I want you more than anything. All of you. Everything about you. More than any other woman I’ve ever wanted. It’s a force . . . deep inside me.”

Juliette is the best when it comes to tennis.  And when she transfers to a new college due to a previous dramatizing experience, she has the chance to start anew.  Sparks are flying with her new coach almost instantly.  And instead of ruining her chance at a huge career in tennis, Drew chooses to leave and let her dreams become a reality.

These characters – where do I start?   Drew, Drew, Drew….he stole the limelight in this book.  You truly couldn’t ask for a more humbling and understanding man with his sexiness.  Juliette will be received differently by everyone.  Her choices won’t be won over by a few and she actually irritated me at points.  But Rachel does a fabulous job of allowing her readers to understand the choices her characters make, whether you may or may not agree with them.

While this book is lighter than previous ones I have read by Rachel, it still hits me hard.  No matter the story, Rachel will always take you on a beautiful journey and leave you smiling ear to ear.

Shameless by Teresa Mummert….Release Day Blitz & Review

Shameless (Shame on You #1)
423 pages (100k words)
New Adult
Can be read as a standalone. No cliffhanger.
*DEAL: If the paperback is purchased from Amazon, you can download the kindle ebook for only $1.99!

Synopsis:

Every student at Shame U has their secrets, and Henley Brooks is no exception. Struggling to pay for college and maintain her perfect reputation has become overwhelming. When her friend Gigi Oxford offers her a night of carefree fun, she can’t pass up the opportunity to unwind.
After a night of drinking turns to chaos, Henley finds herself alone with Lucas Young, a student from London who has come to America to unravel a few secrets of his own, as well as break a few hearts.
Covered in tattoos and drowning in liquor, Lucas was everything Henley should avoid but couldn’t resist. She soon begins to fall for him like the many women before her. But after stumbling across something he didn’t want her to see, she learns that Lucas may not be who she thinks he is.
Henley and Gigi devise a plan to teach Lucas a lesson, but it isn’t long before Henley learns that no one at Shamus Thornton College can be trusted.
When everything begins to feel like it is falling apart, there is only one person Henley wants to pick up the pieces, even if he is the person who caused her to crumble.

I was beyond thrilled and truly honored when I was given the option to review Teresa’s newest book, Shameless.  For anyone that has not read Teresa Mummert – you are missing out on ALOT!!

Shameless is told in dual POVs – Lucas and Henley.  They are both attending, Shamus Thorton College (Shame U). Henley is more the quiet, mousey type – sticking to her school work and not out partying it up and enjoying college life.  Lucas moved to the states from London for his own reasons.  He’s her total opposite – tatted up bad boy.

“Sometimes you lies are as simple as a smile.”

On one particular night, Henley’s best friend, Gigi, is able to convince her to go to a party.  A party where she ends up alone with Lucas.  And so beings their tale of lies, deceit and betrayal but neither can walk away.

Teresa writes some of the most intricate and descriptive books.  I love how she is able to bring her words to life and make them feel like a movie playing out before you.  And Shameless has no shortage of this.  Teresa puts you through a rollercoaster of emotions and does let up on the angst at any point.

“He was a heartbreak waiting to happen, and I refused to be his next victim.”

Teresa has created another fabulous series with characters that will leave you wanting more.  Shameless can be read as a standalone.  However, I am looking forward to reading more about Henley and Lucas along with the rest of the cast.  I can’t wait to see where Teresa takes us next!

Siobhan Davis is a new author to me.  And I am not sure why I am just now hearing about her.  Her assistant contacted me asking if I’d review an early copy of her next release, Finding Kyler, in a new series she was debuting.  I was immediately interested after reading the blurb and was truly excited to read a new author (new to me).
I can’t sing enough high praises about Finding Kyler.  Yes, some people will find the plot line to be taboo, but that’s what drew me in.  I love the taboo and shocking story lines.  I love it when a plot goes against the norm and pushes boundaries.  I feel that the stories are more unique and authors are able to open up more in their creativity.  And I just flat out love how Siobhan writes this story.  She starts this series off beautifully and hits the ground running.
” ‘My family is gone.  They’re never coming back.  And I’m trying to find a way of existing when sometimes I feel as dead as them on the inside.’ “
In Finding Kyler, we get to meet all the Kennedy boys plus their parents.  We get a glimpse into each of the boys, and there are ALOT of them.  And let me tell you, their gene pool came from the Gods because they are equally hot in their own way.  Bu in Finding Kyler, we dig deeper into Kyler and Faye’s lives.  Faye is thrust into a new world when she is forced to move in with her uncle and aunt whom she never knew existed.  Kyler is being a typical brooding teenage male and going through his first heartbreak. Sounds like typical, normal teenage garbage, right?   That’s where you’d be wrong.  Let’s just Finding Kyler is Gossip Girl meets O.C.  And I FUCKING LOVE IT!!  It’s my guilty pleasure in a book!!!
“The truth always finds a way to out itself.”
What I absolutely love in this book, is how Siobhan writes these characters.  You get an understanding that there is alot more going on underneath the smoke and mirrors that the Kennedy’s show everyone.  Each of them is battling their own demons and issues, including the mom and dad.   And appereances are everything to the Kennedy’s.  Faye is slowly developing her own relationships with each of her cousins and relating to them in different ways.  Faye is trying to find her place in this new world, without losing who she is.  And in this high society, when you are already a target before you’ve even be able to make move, defending yourself becomes a whole new battle.
“Alone, we both suffer in this world.  Together, we can conquer it.”
All I can say is, Siobhan has me completely hooked on this series.  I am curious as to what her other books and series are about.  Siobhan is very talented and keeps her readers in the story, never wanting to stop.  I can’t wait til the next book comes out.  She through us one hell of a doozy at the end of this book, so I really hope we aren’t kept waiting too long.
Finding Kyler is a phenomenal start to what I know will be one hell of a great series!!

The light in her eyes turned to concern and puckered her brows. “Are you okay?”His heart drummed inside of him, and he moistened his lips. Taken aback, he’d never had anyone ask him that question and feel like they honestly wanted to know the answer.

He nodded. “I’m good. A little stiff and sore but good.”

Heather shook her head and leaned closer to the table, reaching for his hand. He crossed his arms.

“Don’t be like that,” she whispered. “I care about you.”

“Don’t.”

Her eyes widened. “Don’t care?”

“Shit is going on, Heather. You look out for yourself and stay away from me.” His rapid heartbeat made his chest hurt, and he forced a deeper breath inside of him. “I shouldn’t have played around with you. You’re a good woman.”

“And, what? You’re a bad man?” Heather smirked. “Give that story to someone else. Whatever is going on with you has everything to do with you being attacked. It’s not about how I enjoy your company, and you’ve shown me you’re interested.”

“Like I said, you’re a good—”

“I am.” She stood from the table, stepped toward him, and bent down. “You’re also good. That doesn’t mean I’ll let you act like an asshole toward me. Go home, get some rest, and for God’s sake, take care of yourself.”

She kissed the top of his head, shocking him. All he could do was sit there and watch her walk up to the group of women across the room and join their conversation. She’d spoken words as if ordering him around and yet delivered them softly he could still feel the vibration of warmth she’d left behind in his chest. That feeling had him feeling better than he’d felt since he got his ass handed to him.

Heather leaned forward. Her hard, round ass pressed tight against her jeans. He stretched his leg out, leaned back in the chair, and wondered if Heather was aware of him ogling her. She shifted her hips side to side and then straightened, tilting back her head, and drinking from a bottle of beer.

Not from a glass, which Gia preferred.

Not a mixed drink, which Jana consumed.

No, Heather wrapped her slim fingers around the cold bottle and drank as if she enjoyed simply putting her lips on the glass.

Rod brushed the back of his hand across his lips. He’d taken things slow and gotten to know her without putting any demands on her and had enjoyed every fucking minute of frustration.

He hadn’t planned a relationship with Heather. It happened the moment she’d stepped forward without stepping back and decked him in the mouth. Her strength surprised the shit out of him. Most people backed away.

Drawn to that strength, he discovered pure softness. It wasn’t easy to get behind the layer of safety she carried herself. Short on sharing and hesitant of his intentions, she’d slowly let down her guard until he was afraid of hurting her. Hurting Swiss. Hurting the club.

If he were a good man, he’d have her in his bed every night and keep her to himself because he hated the thought of one of his MC brothers having her. But even Heather could see he was an asshole at heart.

He had to be.

Because he was one.

He shook his head, looked away from the woman who made him forget and stood. It was time to get out of here and go find the person after him. He never once believed the attack was a random hit.

He wasn’t that lucky.

Delsey showed Merrie to her room. “I’ll have one of the boys bring your luggage up. It’s still sitting in the hall where Randall left it.” She paused. “Don’t let Ren upset you,” she added gently. “He’s hard on people he doesn’t know. Especially women. He had a bad experience. It’s made him cold.”

“I won’t bother him,” Merrie promised. “I brought my sketchbooks and my knitting. I’ll keep busy.”

“Good. If you need anything, I’m usually in the kitchen or somewhere in the house. There are helpers who come on certain days to help me with the heavy stuff. I’m feeling my age a little, but Ren likes the way I cook,” she said with a laugh.

Merrie drew in a long breath. “Our housekeeper, Mandy, taught me to cook. She even taught me how to cut up a chicken and field dress game.” She laughed softly. “I love being in the kitchen, too.”

“I’ll let you help, after you’ve been here a bit.” Her wise dark eyes searched Merrie’s. “It’s a stalker, isn’t it? Randall told me.”

Merrie hesitated. “I don’t want to put anyone in harm’s way…”

“Ren has this place protected like it was Fort Knox,” Delsey told her. “Nobody gets in here without security clearance. Did you notice the cameras at the front gate when you came in?” Merrie nodded. She continued. “We even have facial recognition software. It tracks people.”

“Wow,” Merrie said softly.

“Sadly, it didn’t work on the cowboy who beat that poor horse.” She winced. “Hurricane was the sweetest gelding on the place. It breaks my heart to see what that man did to him.” She drew in a breath. “If he keeps this up, they’ll have to put him down.” She bit her lip, then forced a smile. “Well, I’ll leave you to unpack.” She looked out the door and peered over the banister. “Brady!” she called. “Can you bring those bags up here?”

“Sure thing, Miss Delsey,” the cowboy said with a long drawl.

He brought the bags up the staircase to Merrie’s room.

“Thanks,” she said softly, with a smile.

Brady tipped his hat. He was Delsey’s age, but was wiry and tough and apparently very strong. He grinned at Merrie. “You Mr. Randall’s friend that come to stay awhile?” he asked.

“Yes, I am. I’m Merrie. Nice to meet you, Brady.”

“Nice to meet you, too, miss.” He turned to Delsey.

“Willis wants to know if you’ll make the men a cake.”

“I will,” Delsey replied. “What kind do they want?”

“Chocolate, with that white frosting you make.”

“I’ll start on it right now.” She turned to Merrie. “Have you had lunch?”

“Yes, thanks,” Merrie told her. “Randall got me a cheeseburger and fries on the way here.”

“Okay, then. Supper’s at seven. Ren keeps late hours. Sometimes he doesn’t even show up for supper. Like tonight. He told me to leave cold cuts in the fridge, which means he probably won’t get home until bedtime.”

“Ranching is hard on schedules,” Brady said with a chuckle. “Especially for boss man. He has to be everywhere before the bad weather coming.”

“I called that contractor,” Delsey added to Brady. “If you see Ren, tell him the man’s coming tomorrow morning to see what work needs doing.”

“I’ll tell him.” He tipped his hat again. “See you girls later.”

Merrie grinned. Delsey just laughed.

“He’s nice,” Merrie said.

“They mostly are. But we have a few who work security here,” she added solemnly. “One of them is dangerous. He came to us from Iraq, where he’d been training policemen. We don’t know much about him. He keeps to himself most of the time when he’s not watching the livestock.”

“Who is he?” Merrie asked curiously.

“They call him J.C. Nobody knows what the initials stand for.”

“I’ll stay out of his way,” Merrie promised. She stretched. The gold chain around her neck chafed a little. She pulled out the pretty filigree gold cross she wore and dangled it on her sweatshirt.

Delsey grimaced. She wanted to warn the girl, but she didn’t want to make her more nervous than she already was. Ren wouldn’t like that cross. It would prod him, like waving a flag at a bull. But maybe he wouldn’t see it.

She smiled at Merrie and left her alone to unpack.

Over the course of one wild road trip, feuding childhood sweethearts get a second chance at love in this charming rom-com—a standalone novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Blurred Lines and Good Girl.

When Lucy Hawkins receives a job offer in San Francisco, she can’t wait to spread her wings and leave her small Virginia hometown behind. Her close-knit family supports her as best they can, by handing over the keys to a station wagon that’s seen better days. The catch? The cross-country trip comes with a traveling companion: her older brother’s best friend, aka the guy who took Lucy’s virginity hours before breaking her heart.

After spending the past four years and every last dime caring for his sick father, Reece Sullivan will do just about anything to break free of the painful memories—even if it means a two-week road trip with the one girl who’s ever made it past his carefully guarded exterior. But after long days of bickering in the car turn into steamy nights in secluded motel rooms, Reece learns that, when it comes to Lucy, their story is far from over. And this time, they just might have a shot at a happy ending.

Although listed as a title in the Love Unexpectedly Series, all books in the series stand alone.
