DARK TURNS By Cate Holahan

Nia Washington fought her way up from the streets and was nearing the pinnacle of her profession when an injury and a broken heart derailed her career. Taking a temporary job as a dance instructor at an elite boarding school was supposed to give her time to nurse both body and soul. It was supposed to be a safe place to launch a triumphant comeback. It is anything but.

Not long after she arrives at the beautiful lakeside campus, she discovers the body of a murdered student, and her life takes a truly dark turn. Suddenly, she is drawn into a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse with a ruthless killer. And Nia isn’t the only target. She must use all of her street smarts to protect her dancers, save a wrongfully accused student, and rescue the man she loves.

A stunning and suspenseful tale of passion and betrayal, Cate Holahan’s Dark Turns will take readers deep into the mind of a murderer and the woman who must put an end to the killing.

My Review:

Dark Turns is the debut work from author Cate Holahan and let me say, what an amazing debut it is!

Ballet dancer Nia Washington is nursing an injury and while taking time off of performing with a company, is assisting teaching ballet at a prestigious private school.  It was the last place she expected to stumble across a dead body.  Now she must focus on teaching while navigating the rough waters of the dynamic between her students and try to figure out what happened to the poor dancer found in that lake. Hopefully she can help solve the mystery…before the killer sets their sights on her.

I loved this book! From start to finish I was kept on the edge of my seat wondering what happened to the murdered dancer and who was responsible.  There were more than a few people I had suspected and when the puzzle came into focus and we learned what really happened and who was responsible, my jaw dropped. Talk about on hell of an ending! Duplicity, scandal, and dark desires all wrapped up into a juicy package.

Adding to the stellar plot and who-done-it was an interesting cast of characters.  Some I loved, some I loved to hate.  It reminded me a bit of the movie Cruel Intentions; the overprivileged playing with people as of they were personal play things.  One character in particular is a really doozy and is ugly on the inside as she is beautiful not he outside.  She was the perfect villainess if you ask me!

There was also a bit of romance in the story when Nia meets a fellow teacher and that also added a nice element to the story giving it a well-rounded feel.

One more thing I have to menton is how Ms. Holahan titled the chapters.  She used ballet terms and definitions which I thought was different and fun.

If you’re looking for an interesting, entertaining, and suspenseful read, this is one to get on your shelf! Thank you, Ms. Holahan, for a fabulous story!

Fondu [fawn-DEW]

Sinking down. A term used to describe a lowering of the body made by bending the knee of the support- ing leg.

he lawn glittered in the late summer sun, a shining emerald slate as uniform as Astroturf. The grass smelled real, though. Realer than real. Each inhale filled Nia’s
nose with a spritz of green, more pungent than mall per- fume and far sweeter than the oniony weeds back home. The lawn smelled like money.
Nia stared at the clock on the tower at the far end of the courtyard. Its short hand pointed to the Roman numeral seven. The long hand crept toward the X. He would arrive soon.
A cramp pulled at the meat between her metatarsals. She steadied herself on her good leg and folded in half to grab the throbbing joint that had spurred the contraction. Her thumbs slid beneath the clinging hem of her spandex

capris. She pressed into her heel until it grew hot. The pain’s drumming slowed. Only a doctor could silence it. Until she got some real medical attention, she’d keep having bearable days and bad ones.
Today was a bad day. She blamed herself. The tendon- itis always flared when she didn’t stretch. She should have risen earlier to warm up. What if the director asked to see pointe work? Could he rescind the offer if he didn’t like her performance?
An iron bench sat just to the right of the registration building. She limped to it. The metal was cool on her palms. She placed her feet in a line, heels together, toes pointed in opposite directions. She dipped into a demi-plié. Tightness trickled from her thighs. The familiarity of the move did as much good as the stretch. It was her morning coffee, a ritual that woke her body and prepared her for the day.
A breeze stirred the lawn, reassuring visitors that a school of Wallace Academy’s caliber would not accept any- thing as gauche as faux grass. Nia didn’t see any visitors to impress. School offices were closed. The academic buildings that flanked the courtyard remained locked. Classes didn’t start until tomorrow.
The students had arrived, though. Parents had flooded onto campus over the weekend, pouring from imported SUVs with trunks and suitcases, filling the dorms with preppy debris while their teenagers flowed between build- ings in search of lost friends. She’d watched the move-in from the bay window of her new studio, which overlooked the entire courtyard. Such views were rare, reserved for so-called resident advisors, a college title intended to trick high school students into befriending the teaching assistant down the hall. But she was more of a spy than a schoolmate. The dean had been clear: she existed to keep boys out and

report anyone attempting to sneak in the opposite sex dur- ing the week. She was also expected to sniff around for pot and cigarettes.
She didn’t know why the dean worried. So far, the dorm had gone quiet by eleven o’clock each night. These students weren’t nymphos or druggies. How could they be and sneak past the admissions officer? Wallace prided itself on an acceptance rate that rivaled the Ivy League schools to which it funneled graduates.
Birds trilled somewhere above her. Nia listened to their music and dropped into a grand plié, thighs and calves apart, spine straight. Her back released more tension. The throbbing in her heel subsided. She arched her arms over her head. Endorphins chased the nerves from her system. She felt loose. Confident. She rose to her toes.
Pain crackled through her leg like a string of firecrack- ers. Her ankle wobbled with each small explosion. Her heel crashed to the floor. A smile parted her lips. Dancers didn’t show discomfort. Fifteen years of training let her beam through cramps like the Virgin Mary in labor.
She shook her right leg. Stretching alone couldn’t soothe this pain. She needed the shot. Once the health insurance took effect, she would head straight to the orthopedist.
Footsteps tapped somewhere to her right. A svelte man, clad in black, glided toward her. The bright morning high- lighted a shock of silver in his black hair. The streak was Ted Battle’s trademark and the single sign of his forty years.
An embarrassed flush heated Nia’s neck. The dance director had seen her stumble. Nerves pinched the edges of her false smile. She forced a brighter grin.
“Mr. Battle.”
He nodded in her direction but didn’t pick up pace. She pushed back her shoulders, pulled in her abs, and angled

her right foot in front of her left, a relaxed fourth position stance. She hoped her posture obscured her injury.
Battle stood before her and extended his palm, as if ask- ing her to dance. He flashed a smile that illuminated his angular face.
She shook. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Battle.” “Glad we could talk before classes start.”
His voice sounded higher than she’d imagined. In lieu of a commanding baritone, a musical tenor emerged from the director’s lips. She detected a touch of femininity in the way his pitch climbed at the end of the sentence. Was he gay? About half of the male dancers she knew were homosexual, and Battle wasn’t married.
She admonished herself for the train of thought. Her boss’s sexual preference didn’t matter. As for herself, it had been so long that she might as well have been asexual.
Images from the last time fluttered into her mind. The seam between Dimitri’s pectorals. His shapely mouth, curled in a smile. She blinked to blur the memories. This job came with health care. She couldn’t let heartache dis- tract her.
“I regret that I didn’t interview you personally,” Battle said. “Our last assistant left so abruptly that we had to fill the position while I was still in Queensland.”
Nia regained her focus. “I understand she had a baby.” Battle rolled his eyes. The expression seemed to com-
pare maternity leave to claiming the dog had eaten your homework.
“Yes. Took us all by surprise. She wasn’t married. Hid the pregnancy with baggy clothes and didn’t let anyone know she wouldn’t return until June.”
He patted the breast of his dark T-shirt, an odd gesture, as if he were feeling for glasses in a nonexistent pocket. His

eyes rolled over Nia’s body, lingering for a fraction of a sec- ond on her flat stomach. The stare tempted her to blurt, Don’t worry about me. I haven’t had sex in a year since my ex and I broke up. She swallowed the overshare, aware it was motivated by awed attraction to her handsome, successful, and likely gay boss.
“I have of course seen your résumé,” Battle said. “I was impressed with your training. The School of American Bal- let since age ten. They don’t accept many girls, and, I expect, they take even fewer on financial aid.”
The comment stung. She knew he’d meant it as a compliment—evidence that she possessed a certain skill beyond her peers—but it reminded her of things she would rather forget: used toe shoes, slapping pickles on foot-long sandwiches to afford costumes, the dubious charity from anorexic rivals—“Here’s a leotard. I’m too small for it now.”
Battle’s light-brown eyes flitted from her waist to her face. “They feed many girls to major companies . . .”
He trailed off, providing an opportunity for Nia to explain herself. Why was a woman her age not with an esteemed company or attending college? If not pregnant, then what, exactly, was her flaw?
Where should she start? She didn’t have a classical danc- er’s ectomorph frame. Her hands could not circumvent her thighs. She possessed a stereotypical “black ass” that refused to disappear, even at a scant hundred and ten pounds. Puberty had somehow swelled her chest into a full C cup that appeared silicone enhanced on her petite frame, a prob- lem she hid with sports bras and unnecessary layers. But her biggest problem of late was literally her Achilles’ heel. Years of pointe work had strained the tendon. Over-the-counter anti-inflammatories no longer relieved the pain. She needed a cortisone shot, a flexible doctor, and rest.

“I performed with the Andrea Brooks troupe in Brook- lyn for a couple years. They’re more contemporary. I don’t know if you would have heard of them.”
The director smiled. He hadn’t heard of them. A blush threatened to crawl from Nia’s neck to her cheeks.
“And then this past year, I traveled with the Janet Ruban Dance Ensemble. I hope that, after this opportunity, I can audition for a larger company.”
“Why not audition now?”
The director didn’t need to add while you’re young and employable. She couldn’t confess to the injury. He might think it would compromise her teaching ability.
“My mother lives in Queens. My father’s not around and
I needed to stay close.”
Battle’s mouth tightened in apparent sympathy for her family’s hardship. Nia thanked God that her nutmeg color- ing masked any guilty blush.
She pumped earnestness into her voice. “I plan to audi- tion next year.”
Battle’s thin smile relaxed. “Well, I hope you do. You’re young. Now is the time. And it is difficult to get a job above assistant teacher, even in a public high school, without a few years of choreography experience and an MFA.” He clasped his hands. “Okay. We’re happy to have you this year. Let me take you on the tour.”
He led the way down a red brick path. She followed a step behind, hiding the limp that would not disappear until she had soaked her leg. They passed a mix of gothic revival and neoclassical buildings, homages to the architecture associated with top universities. Battle pointed out those he found of interest—this is the library, that’s the foreign language department, there’s the English building—all the while dropping names of esteemed graduates.

He stopped before a gothic specimen capped by a mas- sive dome. “This is the music hall. In addition to a recital auditorium, it houses practice spaces that are available to the students around the clock and an extensive music library.”
The structure recalled the U.S. Capitol. It featured the same rows of white columns leading to an ice cream scoop hat. Instead of vanilla, the building’s top shone pistachio.
“The verdigris really connects it to the landscape,” he said. Nia traced Battle’s gaze to confirm he referenced the mot-
tled green dome. She would have to Google verdigris later. “Richard French became Richard French here.”
Nia knew of the famous music professor. Dancers read his critiques to better understand the emotion of a piece. “I studied his writings on Idomeneo.”
“Yes. I assign our students the same critique. Glad you know it, Antonia.”
“My friends call me Nia.”
“Oh, Nia. Well, in front of the students, you will, of course, be Ms. Washington. We don’t want the kids becom- ing too comfortable, especially given your age.”
The formal title surprised her. Ms. Washington was her mother. It hadn’t occurred to her that the students would address her differently than anyone else.
Battle maintained eye contact. His lips pulled into a line. “You’re just a few years older than our seniors, and in all honesty, you could easily pass for a student. We can’t have them taking you for a peer. It might seem silly, but mistakes happen when distinctions become blurred.”
“Of course,” she blurted. “When I watched the parents moving the kids in, all I could think was that all the stu- dents were so young.”
Battle rolled his eyes. “Well, they certainly don’t think so.” He pointed down a gradual hill. A silent expanse of

crystal blue stretched beyond it. “The lake is over there and, as you know, the dance facility is just above it.”
She followed Battle down the sloping path to the water. The lake was small, perhaps the size of four football fields. A dense forest surrounded two-thirds of it, obscuring the nar- row road that defined the shoreline to her right. The path led to a clearing where the trees had been removed to make room for a boathouse and beach. Long racing shells with the school logo—a monogrammed W—lay stacked upside down in a wooden structure. A couple of rowboats floated atop the water, tethered to posts.
Sunlight painted the lake a pale gold. Nia stepped to the water’s edge, careful to maintain her dancer’s posture despite her sore ankle. She loved the water.
“Beautiful, isn’t it?” Battle said. “The view always gets my creative juices flowing.”
“Yes. It’s so calming.” Healing, almost.
“It started as a small canal. Wallace’s founder, Gregory Andrew Wallace, had the idea to create the reservoir and the little beach you’re standing on.”
Battle continued the history lesson. Nia listened to the inflections in his voice, nodding at what sounded like the appropriate time. She didn’t care who carved the lake. She watched the breeze stir the ripples into meringues. Water lapped at her feet.
A strange darkness blurred the surface just beyond her toes. Brown, seaweed-like strands crawled toward the sand. Did lakes have seaweed? She crouched to get a better look.
It was hair.
Her mouth opened in a silent scream. Instinct pushed her feet backward. She stumbled during the retreat. Her butt hit the beach. Sand scraped against her leggings.

Battle splashed into the shallows and pulled the figure onto the shore. Wet hair clung to the face like a tangled net. He peeled the mop back, exposing the mouth and nose, pre- paring for CPR.
Nia regained her composure. It was a girl, a teenager judging from the lithe figure and curved face. Her white skin had turned sallow and translucent. Blue veins puckered from her arms. A deep purple colored her lips. Battle posi- tioned his head above the girl’s mouth and pinched her nose. Before he exhaled, he released the face and sank back onto his calves. Nia followed his frozen stare to the girl’s neck. A pattern of interlocking purple bruises cut above the body’s clavicle like an ornate choker.
Nia’s hand dove into her sweatshirt pocket for her cell phone. She dialed the police.
“Nine-one-one. What’s your emergency?”
“Hi. I’m . . . I am at Wallace Academy. My boss just pulled a girl from the lake.”
“Is she breathing?” “No.”
“Do you know CPR?”
“There are marks around her neck.” “Do you know CPR?”
“It won’t help.” Nia’s voice trembled. “She’s dead.”

My Review:

Easton’s Everything is book six in author Amy Gregory’s Finding Perfect Series, a series I have really enjoyed reading. This story was no exception and follows Jessica and Easton’s push and pull relationship that I adored reading.

Having been left adrift without anyone to rely on but herself, Jessica Pierce was once again uprooted.  Now. she was on a ranch, helping the family who owned it, and finally feeling a part of things.  Almost a part of the family itself.  Of course, she always had a nagging feeling that the other shoe would drop…enter Easton.  The sexy veterinarian son of the owner’s and now the constant thorn in her side.  Funny, though, how sometimes the person you bicker with is the person you turn out to be closest to…

I loved this story.  The push and pull between Jessica and Easton starts off almost immediately and, like a grade school crush where the boy pulls the girl’s pigtails, was a fun banter.  Of course, underneath the banter was an undeniable attraction that grew wonderfully over the course of the story.  Jessica is one tough cookie and I admired her determination and tenacity when it comes to life and succeeding.  Easton is beyond loving and local when it comes to his family and with his animal clients.  Together, even though they start off on somewhat of a bad foot, they realize they have a lot more in common then they imagined and things just grow from there.  I also loved how they really came together in the face of an illness that befalls Easton’s mother.  Truly, a wonderfully well-rounded story!

Thank you, Ms. Gregory, for a fantastic read!

Excerpt:

Easton closed in on her, effectively trapping her between the truck and the open door. He’d meant to intimidate her into speaking, instead he was encircled by the scents of her shampoo and soap, both floral and light. Very feminine, despite the hard work of being a farm hand. Her eyes dilated rapidly before she glanced toward the dessert and away from him.

“Can you please back the hell up?”

“I want to know what you’re not telling me.”

“If you’re so damned concerned, why don’t you ask your father? Better yet, go ask your mother. It’s not my place to say a fucking word, Easton Montgomery. Now stop putting me in the middle, get the hell out of my personal space and quit acting like some macho tough ass who thinks I’m some little lady he can boss around. Never gonna happen.”

“What’s never gonna happen?” He tipped his head. She sucked in a quick rush of air, loud enough for him to read her mind. English was his first language obviously. Sign language, though he was learning, he was far from fluent. But body language—he was a self-professed expert. She hadn’t meant for the last three words to slip from her mouth.

Easton leaned in, “For the record, you’re as gorgeous as you think you are.” She attempted to spin away, but the confined space kept her facing him.

“Unlike you…I don’t think I’m gorgeous, Mr. God’s Gift to Women.”

“Are you saying, you think I’m an egotistical, arrogant ass with a black book for late night booty calls?”

Jessica grinned, her mouth tipped up in a pursed, cute little bow, her hands went to her shapely hips. “I didn’t say it. You did.”

“What are you, ten?”

“I thought I’d better dumb down my vocabulary and sentiments for you to comprehend.”

Easton folded his arms across his chest before he laid them on her. For the first time he found himself surrounded by people and not caring he had an audience. He wanted nothing more than to shut her contrite pink lips up by hauling her up against him and taking control of the situation before she got too out of hand.

“What’s Mom doing?” He tried to pull his thoughts away from the erotic pictures building in his head.

“She’s sitting at the kitchen table writing recipes down for me. Ones she says are in her head. There, are you satisfied, yet?”

The little head jerk she gave to accentuate her point nearly did him in. Easton smirked, holding onto every fiber of not only his temper, but his desire. “Not nearly, darling.”

“I’m not your darling. I’m not your honey, sweetheart, doll face—your nothing. Not now, not ever. I’m here for your mom, your dad and more importantly, Roscoe. If it wasn’t for the fact that in a very short time, I’ve grown to really like your parents and I need a place for my horse—you’d be eating gravel about now.”

Her skin was tinged with the most beautiful shade of pink. Her blue eyes had darkened and her pulse had spiked. Easton knew she was bluffing with every bold-faced lie she spoke. He lifted his chin, daring her to continue. She opened her mouth, he lifted his brow…waiting. She narrowed her eyes at him and clamped her mouth shut.

She begs him to take her for one night, and Remington finally agrees. Will they get a second chance at love, or are the scars from their past too deep to heal?

My review:

Beg Me is story number four in author Jennifer Probst’s Steele Brothers Series and holy MOLY, this book was smoking hot!

Cara and Rem had one doozy of a past, complete with an intense love and a hurtful breakup.  They had both try to move on but have never forgotten what they had. It still haunted them and their hearts were never free of what they once shared.  In trying to exorcise the memories of the relationship, Rem and Cara unknowingly put themselves on a path leading right back into one another’s arms.  Will they accept this twist of fate as a gift or will it box up the past once and for all?

Ok, I have to say, this was by far the hottest book of Ms. Probst’s that I’ve read.  She did a wonderful job diving into the BDSM world and the D/s relationship between Cara and Rem was positively delectable.  I love the past Cara and Rem once shared and how it gave the closeness they fell into when the reconnected in Vegas an element of believability.  Of course, how they end up back in the same bed was one of the best book surprises ever! I also loved the bit of humor in the story of how Remington Steele got his name (I was hoping it had something to do with Pierce Brosnan when I read the synopsis and the hero’s name!).

If you’re looking for a wonderful second chance at love story packed with smoking hot heat, this is a book I recommend getting on your list.  Thank you, Ms. Probst, for an amazing read!

Designed for Murder by Avery Flynn….Blog Tour Stop & Review

Designed for Murder (Killer Style 4) by Avery Flynn

Date of Publication: November 10, 2015

Blurb

This book can be read as a standalone!

Devastated after he discovers the woman he loved and his partner in the role-playing game, Magic Battledome, was a psychotic killer, Maltese Security’s resident computer genius, SciFi fan and geek-about-town Carlos Castillo retreats into his work. Tossing aside all ties to the Magic Battledome community, he eats, sleeps and breaths investigations. He’s determined to prove to the rest of the team—and himself—that he’s not all book smart and street stupid. He pleads for a case and finally gets one the boss thinks is right up his alley. Someone is targeting a Live Action Role Playing (LARP) Magic Battledome team, delivering vicious beatings before robbing them of their costumes. To solve the case, Carlos has to dive back into the world he’d abandoned.

Mika Ito loves creativity in all its forms. As a textile designer and a LARPer, she combines her two favorite things by creating costumes for her fellow Magic Battledome elves. But when someone starts targeting her fellow LARPers and the police don’t seem to be much help, she hires Maltese Security to solve the case. If a reformed sinner is the most devoted, then a former LARPer is the most rudely dismissive and Carlos Castillo fits the bill. But when they discover that the material she’s been using for the costumes has been soaked in liquid cocaine by someone in her supply chain, they must work together to solve the case. Especially now that the bad guy is doing whatever it takes to retrieve the tainted material—including having lethal designs on Mika’s life.

My Review:

Designed for Murder is the fourth installment in author Avery Flynn’s Killer Style series, and although it can be read as a standalone, I have loved this entire series and highly recommend reading them all regardless.  This story was just as fast-paced and sexy as the others but there is just something about these two sexy geeky characters that puts it in the lead as my fave of the series thus far.  I loved it!

With so many things to love about this story, it’s hard to know where to start.  Mika is a star in the LARPing world and is determined to get her hands on the person responsible for hurting her gaming family.  It’s that determination that leads her to Maltese Security.  She’s no-nonsense and speaks what’s on her mind and I loved reading her.  Carlos has been burned in the past after falling for the wrong woman and because of her, he had given up the on-line gaming part of his life.  An on-line world hew as a gaming god in.  Now he was hell-bent on working cases in Maltese that didn’t include computers whatsoever.  Man, does fate have a plan for these two!

From start to finish, the heat and action in this story kept me glued to each page and every word.  This book starts out with a bang (pun intended lol!) and just got better and better.  Mika and Carlos are beyond smoking hot together and having to work together to stop these attacks added a layer I loved.  Mainly because after their initial meeting, neither one thought they’d ever see each each other again. Talk about a surprise when your supposed one night stand walks into your meeting at the security company you want to hire.  Their chemistry was undeniable and even though neither one was looking for a relationship, their pasts and both having gone through a traumatic event, will connect them on a level much deeper than just a working relationship.

The who-dun-it aspect was also done really well and was a mystery I loved getting to the bottom of.  But I have to say, my overall favorite thing about this story and these characters was the LARPing and the geekiness.  It was a fresh element and one I think a lot of us can relate to.  I’m a geek at heart myself so I loved the costumes and gaming.  Such a great addition to an amazing story.

Entertaining and lovable characters, sex, mystery, action…this book really is the whole package!  Thank you, Ms. Flynn, for another stellar addition to the Killer Style series.  I can’t wait to see what’s next!

About Avery Flynn

Avery Flynn has three slightly-wild children, loves a hockey-addicted husband and is desperately hoping someone invents the coffee IV drip.

She fell in love with romance while reading Johanna Lindsey’s Mallory books. It wasn’t long before Avery had read through all the romance offerings at her local library. Needing a romance fix, she turned to Harlequin’s four books a month home delivery service to ease the withdrawal symptoms. That worked for a short time, but it wasn’t long before the local book stores’ staffs knew her by name.

Avery was a reader before she was a writer and hopes to always be both. She loves to write about smartass alpha heroes who are as good with a quip as they are with their *ahem* other God-given talents. Her heroines are feisty, fierce and fantastic. Brainy and brave, these ladies know how to stand on their own two feet and knock the bad guys off theirs.

ABOUT EASY MELODY:

Callie Mills never intended to return to New Orleans and the life she left behind more than a decade ago. There was no need to open old wounds when she had the life she’d worked hard for in Denver. But when she’s fired from her awesome job in Colorado and her father dies, she has no choice but to return home to run the derelict bar left to her in the heart of the French Quarter. Callie must not only face bad memories but turn The Odyssey into something she can be proud of.

And who better to help bring in crowds of people than Declan Boudreaux?

Declan is a sought-after musician who knows he’s good at what he does and loves doing it. Known to pack the house, he also loves women and doesn’t expect to be knocked back a step by the beautiful new owner of The Odyssey. Callie is sharp, gorgeous and funny, and makes him yearn for something he never has before… Commitment.

But when Callie’s able to turn the business around with renovations, making it one of the hottest bars in the Quarter, will she sell out and leave her past behind once and for all, or will Declan be able to convince her that’s she’s where she needed to be all along…in his arms.

My Review:

Easy Melody is the third installment in author Kristen Proby’s Boudreaux Series, a series I have loved since the very beginning.  This book was just as wonderful as the first two and I can’t get enough of this family and their love interests!

A whole lot has happened in Callie’s personal life in a short amount of time.  Her father died, she was left his bar in New Orleans, and now she has just been dumped both romantically and professionally by her long-term boyfriend.  Things just about sucked.  So when she returns to NOLA to figure out what to do to get this newly inherited bar running in the positive, the last thing she needed was any type of distraction.  Especially of the male musician variety.  Unfortunately all those intentions go right out the window when she sees Declan…

What starts out as a fling turns into something much more and it scares the hell out of both of them.  Can two people looking for anything but a commitment finally desire one?

One of the things I love about Ms. Proby’s writing is whenever I start one of her books, I know it’s going to be an effortless read and an enjoyable experience.  She writes with an ease that I know all readers enjoy, myself included.  I can always count on wonderful dialog and interesting characters, especially with the Boudreaux clan!  I loved Declan and Callie.  Callie is strong and determined but also has a soft side that I just adored. Declan is a charmer indeed and has an ease about him that I could eat up with a spoon.  And that accent? Swoon. Every time he calls Callie “sugar”, I melt! The heat and passion between them was delectable and there was a scene involving a piano that burned up the pages *fans self* mhhhmmmm!  I also love reading the interaction between the siblings and the partners who have joined in the family.  Coming from a large and close family myself, it’s always a joy to read their tight-knit group.

Once again, Ms. Proby delivers emotion, passion, and enjoyable characters from start to finish.  I can’t wait to read more of my favorite New Orleans family!

My review:

Blowback is the newest release in author Emmy Curtis’ Alpha Ops series, a series I adore.  This was a hot, sexy, and action packed addition and I loved every minute of it.

Having not laid eyes on one another for over a year, neither David nor Molly expected to run into each other at a political summit in Greece.  But they did.  They also ran into a heap-load of trouble, trouble that Molly unknowingly got herself involved in when a friend in Washington D.C. asked her to do a favor for him.  But neither one can be angry at the danger when it was because of that danger that they have a chance at pursuing the feelings they’ve both been harboring over that last long twelve months.  Now the only problem, besides staying alive, is giving love and their relationship a real chance.

I adore Ms. Curtis’ writing.  Her romantic suspense is the perfect match of heat and action. Molly and David are two amazing characters.  He’s trying to get his life back on track and his head screwed on straight…trying to be someone worthy of a woman like Molly.  Molly is strong and determined and knows without a doubt that she needs to take this chance meeting with David and make the most of it.  And oh does she ever!  There were some majorly sexy scenes and luckily, because Molly and David already have a friendship. we don’t have to wait long for the heat.  The action was also pretty amazing.  With a well thought out and suspenseful plot encompassing a few countries and a mystery surrounding a murder, this really was the whole package. Bombs, spies, assassinations, it has it ALL!

If you’re a romantic suspense fan, this is a series you have got to get your hands on!  Thank you, Ms. Curtis, for another kick ass read!

Excerpt:

David Church eyed the people talking to his principal. Close protection was a bitch, but the company he worked for had saved him from self-destruction, so he basically owed them his soul. And this week, his soul was guarding a very important scientist. He had no idea who would want to hurt a scientist, but his boss had assigned him to Athens, and here he was.

Although his attention was on Professor Rankin, he was also scanning the room for someone special, the other reason he hadn’t complained at taking this job: Molly Solent was on the week’s schedule, and he wanted to see her.

Badly. Like blue-balls badly.

He’d kept track of her for nearly a year, since they’d met, briefly, in Iraq. At the time he’d been in no shape to choose a tie color, let alone date someone as…unique as Molly.

From the second he’d laid eyes on her, he knew she was trouble. Trouble for him, anyway. His eyes rested for a second on the far wall, which was adorned with a mosaic picture of an ancient Greek warrior. In some way he was like that mosaic. A fine illustration of a fighter, but when you got up close, you could see the cracks. Millions of cracks. Good for no one, especially someone like Molly. Hell, he was barely in good enough shape to have this job. But his CEO had seen something in him—or so he’d said—something that David couldn’t see himself, and had sent him on a series of low-risk jobs. It had been almost enough to take his mind off Molly.

She had haunted his days and nights with her eyes that were full of promise, full of a future than he couldn’t see. She’d seen him at his worst, and it didn’t seem to faze her at all. Her eyes. He closed his own as he thought about her again. Innocent and totally open. She’d wanted him and hadn’t been afraid at all of making it clear.

Her image had kept him going through the long, dark nights of recovery. The single chink of light in his life. He was scared to lose that. Scared to see her.

The one thing that he was proud of, pretty much the only thing, was walking away from her before he sucked her into his downward spiral.

He had to keep his mind on that one point if he saw her here. He wasn’t fixed yet. Wasn’t entirely right. He still looked longingly at liquor, remembering the peace that came at the bottom of the bottle. He still dreamed that he’d fallen off the wagon. When he woke up, all he could remember is how good it felt. And the hallucinations. Nope. He definitely wasn’t ready for Molly. And she definitely didn’t deserve the shitstorm that seemed to always revolve around him.

The professor moved to speak to someone else, and David snapped back into alertness. He scanned the immediate crowd around him. No threats. But he couldn’t relax. She could be here. Molly could be right here, in the same room as him. He ran a finger under his collar as his temperature rose.

Leveled by Jay Crownover…Review

LeveledREVISED

Synopsis:

We all need a hero…let the Saints of Denver begin

Orlando Frederick knows what it is to be leveled by pain. Instead of focusing on his own, he’s made it his mission to help others: sports stars, wounded war vets, survivors of all kinds. But when Dom, a rugged, damaged, sinfully attractive cop, makes his way into Lando’s physical therapy practice, he might be the biggest challenge yet. Lando loved one stubborn man before and barely survived the fallout. He’s not sure he can do it again.

Dominic Voss is a protector. The police badge he wears is not only his job, it’s his identity, so when he’s sidelined because of an injury, the only thing he cares about is getting back on the force. He expects Lando to mend his body, he just doesn’t realize the trainer will also have him working toward a hell of a lot more. As attraction simmers and flares, Dom sees that Lando needs repair of his own…if only the man will let him close enough to mend what’s broken.

My Review:

Leveled is the first in a new series by Jay Crownover, and admittedly the first of her work I’ve read. I know, I know…I’m a slacker! I own some of her books but just never got around to reading them, which I will now be rectifying because she knocked my socks off with this book.

Police officer Dominic Voss is broken on the outside. Physical therapist Orlando Frederick is broken on the inside. Fate put these two together for a reason…to heal. From the very beginning of this story I loved everything about these two very different characters. Dom is gruff, tough, and knows exactly who is he and is unapologetic and steadfast. Lando is a healer by nature and is scared to let love in after being hurt so deeply in the past. Lando has never been with a man proud to be with him. Proud to accept their sexuality. Until he meets Dom. Neither one was looking for any sort of relationship. Neither one expected it and there may have been some stumbles along the way, but soon enough they both realize they need to grab on tight to what they’ve found and never, ever, let it go.

My oh my, these two are SO ridiculously hot together and so well matched. They balance each other out in the most perfect of ways and they were an absolute joy to read. I seriously could NOT get enough! I was so worried they wouldn’t be able to overcome the doubts they both had during their courtship, but luckily Ms. Crownover writes some seriously kick ass characters and they managed to end up just fine. More than fine, if you ask me.

I cannot WAIT to see what’s next in this series and am hoping we get to see more of Lando and Dom…my two new fave book guys!

Band of Bachelors: Lucas by Sharon Hamilton….Blog Tour & Review

BOB_BlogTour

SharonHamilton_Lucas2_800 copy

Synopsis:

Special Operator Lucas Shipley thought his living arrangement was temporary, since getting booted from the house by his wife. He sleeps on a couch in the apartment with four other divorced Navy SEALs, thinking he’ll get the call to come home any day. He ignores the not-so-helpful advice his buddies are giving him about marriage, women and romance. Until he gets served with divorce papers.

Realtor Marcy Gelland is hired by Lucas’ soon-to-be ex-wife to liquidate all their real estate holdings and help her orchestrate a speedy departure from Lucas’ life. Based on what the hot-headed SEAL wife has told her, Marcy understands Lucas deserves every ounce of pain coming his way.

But when Marcy and Lucas are left alone together in the remote Northern California woods, they ignite a personal bonfire that threatens to burn down the whole forest. Marcy is forced to see she is wrong about Lucas.

Amidst the backdrop of hardened bachelor SEALs with their unsolicited, anti-long-term relationship advice, and a terrorist training camp operating nearby, Lucas must do what he’s always done: be the hero and save the day. But will it be in time to save Marcy?

My Review:

Lucas is the first work in author Sharon Hamilton’s Bad of Bachelors Seal Brotherhood Series and admittedly the first of Ms. Hamilton’s work that I’ve read. With emotion, heat, action, and suspense, I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be looking forward to more from these SEALs!

Marcy and Lucas meet under less than heartwarming circumstances when she is the agent in charge of selling his marital home after his wife files for divorce.  Despite all the reasons they shouldn’t get together in any type of romantic way, the attraction they feel for one another turns out to be one they can’t ignore.  But it will turn out that breaking some rules and falling hard and fast won’t be the biggest problem they have to worry about when a terrorist cell winds up right here in our own backyard and Marcy ends up in their crosshairs….and their grasp.

What I loved most about this book was the author’s betrayal of the men’s men this group of guys truly is.  They’re gritty, raunchy at times, and total bachelors.  I think it’s probably the most accurate portrayal of a bunch of dudes that I’ve read.  They like their danger high, sex raw, and women strong but understanding.  Lucas was a great character to read as well as Marcy.  I also loved the suspense aspect and thought how the author pulled the whole plot together was done really well.  My only slight complaint was how soon Lucas and Marcy exchanged “I love you’s”.  I’m all for insta-lust and even at times insta-love, but this could have waited at least a few pages.  Other than that, this book was great and kept me glued to the pages from start to finish!

Thank you, Ms. Hamilton, for a wonderful and exciting read!  I can’t wait for more of these band of bachelors.

But then she meets Declan Blay, the new neighbor at her apartment complex.

A tattooed British street fighter, he’s the campus bad boy she’s supposed to avoid, but when he saves her from a frat party gone bad, all her rules about sex and love fly out the window.

She gives him one night of unbridled passion, but he longs for more.

With only a cardboard-thin wall separating their bedrooms, he dreams of possessing the vulnerable girl next door forever.

My Review:

Dirty English is the newest work from author Ilsa Madden-Mills and admittedly the first of her work I’ve read.  Well, I can safely say I will be reading everything else she’s written because I just ADORED this book. Devoured it in a day and am still thinking, and swooning, about it right now as I type.

There was so much to love about this story.  Let’s start with Declan, shall we? Oh, Declan.  Such a dichotomy with his tattooed brawn, penchant for fighting, and love of literature specifically, Pride and Prejudice.  I was Team Declan from the very description of him and when we got to learn more about him?  I was a goner.  He is this thoughtful and caring man who loved hid mum and honors her memory in the most special of ways and if that didn’t just round out the most delicious of sexy packages! He’s also a wonderful brother to his twin and had grown up being his fierce protector.  He’s a guy who loves big and I just loved everything about him.  Now, onto Elizabeth.  I loved her just as much.  The girl broke my heart.  Talk about a rough past! But no matter what had happened to her she knew she didn’t want the bad to define her or rule her life.  She was really struggling at times with moving on and being strong but no matter what, she kept going.  Kept trying, I admired her tenacity and determination.

Together these two are of the charts.  The attraction and heat between them builds at a delicious pace and Declan has some lines in this book that melted me into a puddle of swooned out goo.  He was so primal in his attraction and want when it came to Elizabeth and their physical nature but on the flip side he got her on such an emotional level.  Once again, a dichotomy.  There were more than a few stumbles along the way for the two and I was a worried wreck for the last few chapters.  So much so that my chest physically ached. Luckily, author Madden-Mills gave readers an ending that was just so perfect and fit this couple so well.

I have to add that I LOVED Declan’s twin brother, Dax.  He’s the cheeky, flirty party boy with a soft side for his brother and,  I suspect, a much deeper personality than he lets on.  I am really, really hoping he gets a book! (I’m not above begging!)

Overall, this was an amazing read and one I highly recommend.  Thank you. Ms. Madden-Mills, for giving us these wonderful characters and this touching and beautiful story!

Excerpt of DIRTY ENGLISH

“Come to my apartment and spend the night with me.” I touched his face, my fingers stroking the softness of his sensuous lips. “Just one night and we can make this shitty world disappear.”

He exhaled. “A one-night stand?”

“Yeah.”

He cupped my chin. “Someone hurt you, didn’t they?”

My lips tightened. No one at Whitman knew about Colby except for Shelley and Blake, and I sure as hell wasn’t telling him. He’d judge me like everyone else had in Petal, North Carolina. “That’s none of your business.”

“I see.” His eyes searched mine until I felt like a bug under a microscope. “What if I wanted more than just one night?”

“Then your hands can let go of my hips now.”

He removed his hands slowly, the tips of his fingers grazing mine. “This may surprise you, but I don’t sleep with every girl I kiss.”

I’d been rejected. Again. “Blake said you got around, that you used—”

“And you believed him?” His voice was incredulous. “Dude is in love with you and he saw exactly how we looked at each other tonight—”

Looked at each other? What are you talking about? You refused to dance with me and then you ran off with your girlfriend. Not to mention I just kissed you and you didn’t even care.” I threw my hands up.

“I wanted to fuck you the minute you walked in that party,” he snapped.

“Then why don’t you,” I bit out, tossing back my shoulders.

“You think you want me?” he said tightly. “You can’t handle me, Elizabeth. I can see it in your eyes. You’re scared of something, maybe not me, but something.”

My eyes went to his black eye.

He let out a harsh laugh. “Ah, that’s what you’re afraid of. You want the real truth? You told me tonight you didn’t like violence, but I’m an arsehole who uses his fists. That’s who I am.”

“What do you mean?”

His gaze was intense, dark and low, his face struggling as he fought to find the right words. “I’m in a fight club for money. I show up at warehouses and fight other blokes. Sometimes I beat them so bad they need medical attention. A few times, I’ve been beat to unconsciousness. I’m everything you need to stay away from.”

I inhaled, anger and lust and excitement all riding me. Anger that he was pushing me away, lust for the alpha male in him, and God help me, the fighting thing repelled me and excited me at the same time. “I don’t want to stay away from you. I want you to fuck me and stop making excuses for why you can’t.”

My words seemed to snap his taut restraint.

He pulled me back in his arms, his lips fusing with mine unerringly. His tongue plundered me in a sensual way my body had craved for years. I wrapped my arms around his neck, my anger morphing into all-out desire as he turned us and pressed me against the wall.

Yes, yes, this is what I craved.

A passion to remind me that I was real, not just some sad excuse of a girl who chose to exist on scraps of love.

Before I knew it, he’d shoved my robe off, his hands sculpting my shoulders, massaging them as he ravaged my mouth. I reveled in the warmth of his hand on my neck as his mouth skated down, kissing the hollows of my throat, sucking on my collarbone.

“Like this?” he asked, his voice dark and gravelly. “You want me to take you up against this wall?”

“Yes,” I moaned. Gone. Past caring as long as he kept his hands on me.

Out of control, my brain whispered, but I beat back the dark warnings as his warm hand found my breast and squeezed, his fingers rolling my nipple between his thumb and forefinger.

I gasped in pleasure and arched my back to get closer to his body, ignoring the fear that pricked at the surface.

The rules girl in my head stamped her foot and yelled at me. I ignored her.

But even if I wanted to stop right now, I couldn’t. My tongue tangled wildly with his, my hands pulled at his hair, spurring him on, his hand palming my breast and then tugging. Sharp sensations of need went straight to my core.

“Is this what you want? Something quick where we just take what we want and forget each other the next day?”

No. Not that. Not like the way he said it, like it was something dirty.

“Yes, like that,” I whispered against his shoulder, my mouth on his skin, tasting him as my teeth bit down.

BreakMeDown2

Synopsis:

The New York Times bestselling author of Call on Me invites you to discover the thrill of control as one couple wrestles for power in and out of the bedroom…

Samantha Dunbar needs to forget Gibson Andrews. When he trained her to be a domme, she experienced just how hot things could get with the sexy executive. She was ready to hand him everything—including her heart. But Gibson backed away, declaring them incompatible. He’s a dominant, and Sam’s no submissive.

But after an attack shakes Sam to her core, Gibson tracks her down at her family’s rundown farmhouse and makes her an offer. He’ll stay the week and be hers in every way—a helping hand for the renovation and a willing lover in her bed. He swore he’d never give up control to anyone again, but he hasn’t been able to touch another woman since Sam. Maybe a week alone with her will cure him of his relentless craving.

But one taste only makes them want more, and Sam and Gibson are drawn in deeper than ever. The man who won’t give in has just met the girl who won’t give up…

My Review:

Break Me Down is book number 8.5 in author Roni Loren’s Loving on the Edge Series and like all of the books I’ve read in this series, it was deliciously amazing.

What I love most about Ms. Loren’s writing is she always paints the characters with very real and relatable human emotions and feelings.  In this particular story what I found real and relatable was both characters reluctance to give in the emotions and feelings they are scared of experiencing.  Though both for very different reasons, they both have a hard time accepting their deep-rooted desires.  For Gibson it was acknowledging  a dark yearning for someone to take control and, at times, deliver pain.  For Sam it’s learning to truly trust another person so stay and give her the emotional connection she has always craved but never received.  I loved the push and pull between these two and although the situation that has led them to be together and pretty isolated broke my heart for Sam, it was such a blessing in disguise in getting these two wounded and confused souls together.

And yes, while this is indeed BDSM, that is just one of the facets of this story.  I know many of you have left the genre for a bit and are in need of a break, but I will always highly recommend picking up Ms. Loren’s newest releases and Break Me Down is another must read from her!

Thank you Ms. Loren, for giving yet another emotionally charged and scorchingly heated read!

Excerpt:

The floors creaked as he made his way back to the front of the house. He examined the dining room with critical eyes. It looked like one small patch of floor was left. Sam had been close to done when he’d interrupted last night. Yet another valid reason for her to be mad at him.

He squatted down and picked up the sanding machine. It’d been a while since he’d tackled any home improvement projects. His position as head of PR at Vandergriff kept him too busy. But when he’d first bought his house, it had been in pretty rough shape. He’d taken on weekend projects to get it how he wanted it. He’d learned a lot and messed up more. A handyman, he was not. But he understood the satisfaction Sam probably got from doing this herself. It could be cathartic.

“I don’t suggest you turn that on unless you know what to do with it,” Sam said from behind him.

He turned around, finding her at the bottom of the stairs, raven hair damp and twisted into a messy bun atop her head. Face scrubbed clean. She looked so young standing there. He was used to seeing her with her dark eyeliner and hair done in some quirky way. But this version of her was just as breath-stealing. He held up the sander. “Don’t turn it on unless I know what to do with it. There’s a dirty joke in there.”

She smirked, some of that trademark attitude back, despite the lingering ghosts in her eyes. “So do you? Know what to do?”

“With a woman or home improvement equipment?”

“I already know you know what to do with a woman.”

He tilted his head. Flirty Sam. Yes. Yes, he liked this. “I’m not quite as skilled with machinery, but I can hold my own. Why? Gonna put me to work to earn my keep?”

She walked forward, her beat-up Vans silent on the floors. “Hmm, now there’s an idea.”

The tone of her voice had slipped into a dangerous place, one he recognized. One his body recognized. “I don’t mind helping.”

She tucked her hands in the back pockets of her jeans, her vintage No Doubt T-shirt stretching thin across her breasts as she considered him. “Is that right?”

He lost his focus for a moment just looking at her. Her shirt read Just A Girl, but that was far from the truth. She was so much more. A fucking mystery wrapped up in smarts and sex appeal and kink. He’d only gotten to touch her once, but he hadn’t forgotten how those pert breasts had felt in his palms, how her body had responded to his touch, how it had seemed like the goddamned sun had come out when he’d made her come. His blood rushed south at the memory, and he had to shift his stance to tamp down the reaction. How big of an asshole would he be, getting hard and horny the morning after Sam had been attacked? He cleared his throat. “Yeah, I can help with whatever you need.”

Her smile was quick, not too big, but enough to punch him in the gut. “Those are mighty vague terms, Gib. You should know how dangerous that is in negotiations. I could make you strip naked and clean the bathroom grout with a toothbrush while I sip iced tea and watch.”

He set down the sander and ran a hand over the back of his hair. She’d meant it as a joke. He tried to smile but managed only a tight grimace. Any image where he got on his knees for her pushed that forbidden button inside him. “Right.”

The silver ring in her eyebrow twitched up as if she knew exactly what he’d been thinking. “Nah, never mind. I know how you can help. Leave.

Author Bio:

RoniLorenAuthorHeadshot2Roni wrote her first romance novel at age fifteen when she discovered writing about boys was way easier than actually talking to them. Since then, her flirting skills haven’t improved, but she likes to think her storytelling ability has. Though she’ll forever be a New Orleans girl at heart, she now lives in Dallas with her husband and son.

If she’s not working on her latest sexy story, you can find her reading, watching reality television, or indulging in her unhealthy addiction to rockstars, er, rock concerts. Yeah, that’s it. She is the National Bestselling Author of The Loving on the Edge series from Berkley Heat.

My Review:

Fatal Beauty is the newest work from Nazarea Andrews, an author I have loved to read since I stumbled across years ago. I can always count on Ms. Andrews to write great stories with interesting plots and fresh ideas and this was no exception.

With tons of deceit, money, drugs, rich daddy’s girl attitudes, murder, suspense, and steamy sex, there was never ever a dull moment in this book. It started out with a bang (pretty literally) and kept getting better and juicier, as the story went on. In a way, it reminded me a whole lot of the Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe movie, Cruel Intentions, and I just adored that. Two main characters you just hate to love at times and love to hate at others.  It’s hard for me to go into too much specific detail without ruining the twists and turns involved in this book and I certainly don’t want to ruin the experience for any of you. All I can say is if you’re looking for a book that will grab you from the very start and keep you glued to each scandal clad page, this is certainly a book you should read!

Once again I am reminded of why I enjoy Ms. Andrews’ writing so much. Thank you, Nazarea, for a juicy, sexy, dirty, dangerous, and devily delicious read!
