Someone’s Bound To
Get Burned…

Zoe Westin may be a fire captain’s daughter, but feeding
the people in her hometown of Fairview is her number one priority. Running a
soup kitchen is also the perfect way to prove to her dad that helping people
doesn’t always mean risking life and limb. But when she’s saddled with a
gorgeous firefighter doing community service after yet another daredevil stunt,
the kitchen has never been so hot.

Alex Donovan thrives on adrenaline, and stirring a pot of
soup doesn’t exactly qualify. He’s not an expert at following the rules either,
not even when they come from the stubborn, sexy daughter of the man who’s not
only his boss, but his mentor. Determined to show Zoe that not every risk ends
in catastrophe, Alex challenges her both in the kitchen and out. One reckless
step leads to another, but will falling for each other be a risk worth taking,
or will it just get them burned?

My Review:

Reckless is the first book in the newest series from author Kimberly Kincaid.  Being a huge fan, I was so excited for this story! and once again Kimberly knocked it out of the park.  This story was phenomenal!
Firefighter Alex Donovan is in a bit of a hot situation…and not his usual one.  He’s in hot water after disobeying orders and has been given some community service time to think about the risks he took and the position he put himself, and his company, in.  He wasn’t thrilled at first and adding insult to injury was his service was working in a soup kitchen…run by the chief’s daughter.  She was proving to be tough as hell and not letting him slide even a little bit.  She was almost totally resistant to his charms and he sure wasn’t used to that.  Making the situation even hotter was his attraction to the sexy chef.  She was so off-limits for more than one reason and he needed to focus on enduring his few weeks with her and getting back to the firehouse.  Easier said than done when he realizes the attraction was, in fact, very mutual.
Zoe Westin loved her job.  What she didn’t love was having this sexy firefighter in it.  She had been shot down by him a few years back and that memory still stung but seeing him every day was just making things worse.  Also, it seemed no matter how hard she tried, she was totally still attracted to him and if he kept showing her all the different layers that made him not just sexy, but downright delicious, she was going to be in some serious trouble.  She had never prayed for four weeks to go by quicker.
Oh how I loved this story! The attraction and history between Alex and Zoe was fantastic right off the bat.  Her prickly attitude and his attempts at softening her were just so awesome to read!  The tension between them was palpable and when things started to heat up outside of the kitchen, I was totally hooked.  Both of these characters are so wonderful and multifaceted.  When Zoe started to open up to Alex about the reasons she was running the soup kitchen and left her five-star restaurant, I totally feel in love with her.  Alex is equally wonderful with surprises all along the way from the type of home he lives in to that he does with his spare time.  He’s a total catch and I knew Zoe was a goner! I also loved reading all the camaraderie between Alex and his fellow firefighting brothers.  It was really special and I appreciated Kimberly’s attention to that very real life brotherhood.
Overall, if you’re looking for a well-rounded story with memorable characters, this is a book you should pick up. I can’t wait to see what the rest of the series has in store.  Thank you, Kimberly, for another amazing story!

Excerpt:

Recalibrating her thoughts back to the task at hand, she pushed past the twin swinging doors leading from the back of the kitchen into the bare-bones dining room. Pale, earlymorning daylight filtered in through the oversized windows at the front of the long, rectangular space, offering just enough visibility for her to make her way behind the dinged up cafeteria-style counter set up along the rear wall. Not wanting to add injury to the insult she’d already racked up this morning, Zoe hit the panel of light switches by the commercial grade coffeemaker. She turned to grab the filters from the adjacent storage drawer and let the rhythm and the smells and the simplicity of the food soothe her like they always did.

But she wasn’t alone in the dining room.

Zoe’s heartbeat locked in her throat as she registered the man sitting at one of the tables closest to the counter, although sitting was actually pretty generous. His long, jeans-clad legs were kicked out in front of him, crossed one over the other at the ankles of his heavy-soled brown leather work boots. His chin lay tucked against the chest of his navy blue jacket, just enough for his fashionably tousled blond hair to obscure his face, and the soft sound rising up from his chest doubled the shock pumping through her veins.

Her party crasher was snoring.

“Okay, Sleeping Beauty. Time to rise and shine.” Zoe barked the words in her best drill-sergeant voice, although she kept her Danskos planted firmly on the business side of the counter. This guy was pretty horizontal for someone with bad intentions—not to mention far more well-kept than their average residents—but she was still on this side of the shelter all by herself. Looks could be deceptive as hell, and despite the security measures she and Tina had been scraping to put into place, Hope House wasn’t exactly in a pristine neighborhood. No way was she taking any chances by sounding too mousy or getting too close. “I don’t know how you got in here, but breakfast doesn’t start until seven. You’ll have to wait back in the residence until then.”

He woke up all at once, perfectly upright and focused with just two blinks, and holy cheese on a cracker, he was gorgeous. “I’m not here for breakfast. I’m—”

“Alex?” Recognition slammed into her senses, working on a five-second delay with her mouth. But this had to be a mistake. No way could Alex Donovan, the cockiest and most reckless firefighter in her father’s entire house, be standing here in front of her with shoulders twice as broad as the last time she’d seen him and a smile so sexy, the damn thing should come with a sternly worded warning label.

“I’m sorry,” he said, his Caribbean blue eyes tapering in confusion as they took a slow trip from her face to her feet and then back up again. “Do I know you?”

Zoe’s cheeks went hot, although whether it was from the way Alex was focused on her so intently or the fact that she was forgettable enough to go unrecognized, she couldn’t be sure.

“Zoe.” She paused, waiting out his continued lack of a light bulb moment for another few seconds before adding, “Westin.”

Alex’s eyes went as round and dark as ripe blueberries in August, and ding, ding, ding. They had a winner. “Holy shit. I mean—” He straightened, tugging a hand through his sun-kissed hair as his grin turned decidedly sheepish. “Your father mentioned you’d moved back to town, but I didn’t realize you were . . . jeez, didn’t you just graduate from college?”

Zoe’s defenses prickled to life. “Five years ago.” Two months before the last time she’d seen him, to be exact. Come to think of it, Alex had treated her like a little girl that day, too.

Right. Because just what her blush needed was more fuel.

“Oh. I guess time really flies, huh?” He tried on another smile, this one all sweet talk, and God, some things never changed. “Anyway, you might be able to help me out. I guess I’m looking for your boss.”

“My who?”

Alex pointed toward the painted cinder block wall that the soup kitchen shared with the shelter. “The only door that was open when I got here was the one to the shelter. The lady behind the desk walked me through the security doors and told me to wait here for the director of the soup kitchen. It’s kind of a long story, but I got stuck with this stupid community service assignment because of an even

more stupid work thing, and this was the first available placement. To be honest, I just want to get it over with.” He tipped his head at her, sliding his hands into the pockets of his jeans like no great shakes. “What’d you do to land here, anyway?”

Oh, you’ve got to be kidding me. Of all the possible community service assignments in the galaxy, this one took the freaking crown. She might not have clapped eyes on Alex Donovan since she’d made a colossal idiot out of herself in front of him at the Fairview Fire Department annual barbecue five years ago, but clearly, he hadn’t broken the firefighter mold, and she’d been around Station Eight enough to know his reputation by heart. Alex flew by the seat of his bunker pants twenty-four/seven, taking unnecessary risks the way most people took Motrin.

Not happening in her soup kitchen. She might be understaffed, but she wasn’t overstupid.

“The way I landed here was simple, actually,” Zoe said, knotting her arms over her chest tight enough to test the seams of her T-shirt. “I interviewed for the position as director and I got the job.”

The silence extended between them for a beat, then two, before . . . “Wait. You’re the director of the soup kitchen? As in, you run the whole program? I thought you went to some five-star culinary school.” Alex stared at her over the glass and stainless steel food service counter, and at least she’d found the antidote to his smirk.

“Surprise. But don’t worry. You won’t be stuck with this stupid community service assignment for long.”

Her pulse kicked into motion along with her feet, and she angled herself toward the darkly shadowed hallway leading to the pass-through to the shelter. With any luck, Tina would get to work early and could send his arrogant ass packing before Zoe served her first cup of coffee.

“Zoe, wait.” Alex’s long legs ate up the space between them before she could even make it halfway to the dining room door. “I think we got off on the wrong foot here.”

She gave him a tight smile without breaking stride. “At least being a firefighter has kept your observational skills sharp.”

His shoulders snapped into an unyielding knot, his stare flashing cool blue as he kept up with her, step for step. “You want to know what else I picked up with my keen observational skills? You’re in here by yourself, Gorgeous. And that tells me that like it or not, you need all the help you can get to run this place.”

Zoe’s gut took a downhill slide toward her hips, and she froze mid-pace on the threshold of the shadow-lined hallway. “Help from someone who isn’t serious about being here isn’t going to help at all.”

“Oh, I’m absolutely serious,” Alex said, triggering a borderline unladylike snort from her lips.

“You fell asleep on the job before you even started, then you called your assignment in the program I started from scratch ‘stupid.’ As far as I’m concerned, that makes you about as serious as a tabloid headline, no matter how shortstaffed I happen to be.”

One corner of his mouth lifted upward, disappearing briefly beneath his golden brown stubble before he folded his lips back to neutral-expression territory. “Look, you and I might not see eye to eye on the value of community service, but I can promise you this. I’m as determined to do my job as you are to do yours. The city sent me here for a reason. I can’t go back to Station Eight until I do my time, and you need a volunteer. So are we going to help each other out here, or what?”

Zoe opened her mouth, her own personal version of or what preloaded and ready to launch from her tongue. But if there was one rule she lived by above everything else, it was not putting what mattered most at risk, and what mattered most was feeding the residents at Hope House. As much as she knew firefighters—especially ones like Alex Donovan—were nothing but a great, big recipe for disaster, Zoe needed him.

And that meant she had no choice but to spend the next four weeks with the arrogant, impulsive firefighter in her kitchen and under her skin.

Between Shadows Cover

BOOK SUMMARY:

A sexy new thriller about love and revenge from the author of the Capital Confessions and International School series…

X lives by three rules: Show no weakness. Trust no one. Don’t get caught. She lives by the rules they gave her.

The Academy—set in London, shrouded in secrecy—it trains spies, computer experts, and assassins. Their mission? Dispensing justice and altering the course of world politics. Or so they think. In a world where secrets are weapons and some kills are impossible to forget, everything X thought she knew about her life is about to change.

They taught her to fight. To blend into the shadows like a ghost, to operate on the fringes of society, to change her identity with ease. They taught her to kill.

She’ll need every skill they taught her, to stay alive.

My Review:

Between the Shadows is the first work from author Chanel Cleeton that I’ve read and let me say how happy I was to have been introduced to it. This book was dark, sexy, mysterious…unlike anything I’ve read and I loved every second.

This story is set in London at a school that basically breeds secrets.  Secret people no one knows about.  Secret people made to do the high risk dirty work that, they think, is for the greater good.  Taking out the bad guys that have wronged the world.  It’s how X has spent her youth; thinking she was killing for the good.  Like a Robin Hood of sorts.  It was really the only life she remembered after arriving at this school as a small child.  Now years later, as a young adult, she had accepted her fate. She had accepted it until the one person she thought she would never see again was back in her life and making her question everything she’s ever known. She knows that this type of questioning could land her in a world of trouble…or death.  X has some serious choices to make that can not only affect her, but her younger sister as well who happens to be in the very school she was now thinking of escaping.  The stakes had never been higher and X will soon learn more than she had ever wanted to know…

As I said earlier, this was a dark book.  The opening scene is X on a mission to kill and it totally sucked me in and keep me glued to each page.  I was instantly invested in X and wanting to know more about her.  Why she was the way she was.  What her story was.  Her history.  All of it.  And oh boy, what a history it was.  This girl is a total badass and getting to the bottom of her mystery was a wild and crazy ride. Adding to her mystery was the appearance of her ex, and fellow “student”.  I love how their story and past was revealed slowly and we were kept guessing for a little while. Nothing being revealed too quickly but not taking so long that I was annoyed and frustrated.  This almost reminded me of a young female Jason Bourne type story and I was so engrossed in reading it.  It’s hard to say more about the plot without ruining anything for you but I will say that some major secrets are revealed and sets up a series I cannot wait to read more of.  I can only imagine the craziness which will ensue once X and her little rogue group start fighting the powers that be.

If you’re looking to escape for an afternoon or an evening into a world of action, deceit, secrets, and heat, this is a book I highly recommend.  Thank you, Ms. Cleeton, for one hell of an awesome read!

My Review:

Extreme Honor is the first in a new series by author Piper J. Drake and after reading this first installment, I already know this is an entire series I am going to love.  From start to finish I enjoyed everything about this book.

Ex-soldier and dog trainer David Cruz and Lyn Jones find themselves in quit a predicament when they both are working with returned canine war hero, Atlas, and things start to get a bit more dangerous than just risking a bite.  While both David and Lyn are determined to help Atlas overcome the loss of his handler, it soon becomes apparent that someone else is after Atlas but for entirely different reasons.  Sure, the dog was a hero and everyone wanted to see him but this was someone after more than a publicity photo shoot.  Someone was after a secret Atlas carried and they didn’t appear to be afraid of hurting people to get what they were after.  Now David and Lyn must figure out just what’s going on and try to keep alive while doing it.

From the very beginning I was drawn in to the story of Atlas and both the heartbreak and mystery surrounding him.  He had lost his handler in battle and was home now in the caring hands of David and they were all trying to cope with this huge loss.  I have never read a book where one of the characters I loved most was a canine. But Ms. Drake has done it with this book!  He has such a great personality and it really shines through.  Of course, I loved the humans as well.  David has a handsome and gruff exterior with a huge soft spot for the people (and dogs) he holds close.  He’s loyal and never backs down from a challenge.  Lyn is equally as wonderful.  She is one tough cookie and has no trouble facing the danger headed her way.  Together these two are incredible.  Their chemistry is palpable and the way they come together when things start to get a bit hairy is really awesome.  They kick some major bad guy butt and I loved it!

The mystery surrounding who is after Atlas was also done really well and I was truly kept guessing until the very end.  Speaking of the end, Ms. Drake really did an excellent job at setting up the series ahead and I have no doubt it’s going to get pretty interesting!

I also have to give a shout out to Ms. Drake and the stellar job at getting all things Philadelphia just perfect!  This story is set in the Philly burbs (pretty much right where I live) and I loved reading about real places I’ve been to. Awesome stuff!

If you’re looking for an action packed read with a great plot and memorable characters, this is a book your should pick up.  Thank you, Ms. Drake for a great story!

Beating Ruby by Camilla Monk…ARC Review

25855659

Synopsis:

Life hasn’t been quite the same for computer engineer Island Chaptal since March, an OCD-ridden professional killer, burst into her life to clean her bedroom and take her on a global chase for a legendary diamond. Sadly, the (hit) man doesn’t just break bones; he breaks hearts, too.

Since then, Island has found solace in Alex—the perfect boyfriend—and Ruby, a software project about to revolutionize online banking security…for the worse. When Island’s boss is found dead after allegedly using Ruby to steal a vast fortune, it’s up to her to clear his name and recover the money. Someone else wants answers, though, and this time, Island might be in over her head.

From New York to Zürich, it’s going to take the return of a cleaning expert, a mini-octopus, and Island’s wits to beat Ruby. All while deciding whether to trust a man who already jilted her, or one who may have his own deadly secrets…

My Review:

Beating Ruby is the second book in author Camilla Monk’s Spotless series and after falling in love with this quirky heroine in the first book, I was so excited to get my hands on an early copy of this new installment.  Well, Ms. Monk has given us another fun, suspenseful, and well thought out story in Beating Ruby.  I loved it!

Computer engineer Island Chaptal has been in quite a funk since returning home after her adventure searching for treasure with a compulsive hit man.  Not so much because of being let down from the high of the chase, but more so because of the way the hit man she had fallen for left her.  But being the kind of gal she was, Island was trying to move on.  She had even dipped her toe in the on-line dating pool and was seeing a nice guy.  A stable, non killer guy.  Unfortunately life was about to get turned upside-down once again when her colleague is murdered and the huge computer program she had been working on with him had been hacked and used for nefarious purposes.  Now she was once again on the hunt to solve a mystery only this time the people she thought she could trust aren’t exactly who she thought they were.  Luckily her OCD hit man, March, would always be there to save the day…sort of.

With duplicity at every turn, Island will have on hell of a time trying to find out who is responsible for her friend’s murder and behind the theft of her computer program all while trying to deny her opened wound when March walks back into her life. Talk about pushing a gal to her limits!

I seriously love this series.  I have a huge girl crush on this heroine and with so much to adore about her, I will try not to gush too much.  Beating Ruby is another well-written and well-thought out story with twists and turns aplenty.  I was truly kept guessing until the last few chapters as to who was responsible for this theft and murder.  And when the big reveal happened, I was totally surprised.  I love that feeling and always appreciate when I get to read it.  But where this series really shines is in Island and her quirky and funny disposition.  She says some of the funniest things at the funniest moments and it’s beyond refreshing.  Especially when it’s a tense moment and she gives you a peek into her thoughts.  She reminds me a little bit of Elle Woods in Legally Blonde. A super smart cookie with determination in spades but also fun and quirky.  She had me laughing too many times to count.  I also love her professional killer love interest, Mach.  He’s quite and reserved with about a hundred compulsive tendencies but a huge soft spot for Island.  I totally picture Jason Statham when reading, by the way.  Their history goes way, way back and he’s beyond protective of her and cares for her more than she will ever know…probably because he won’t admit it.  But it’s plain to see he loves her in his own way.  I love them together.  It’s not an ideal match in some ways but in others it’s simply perfect.  Opposites truly do attract when it comes to these two!

This was a book I knew once I started, I wouldn’t stop until I had finished it and indeed that was the case.  If you’re looking for a read filled with suspense, humor, and even a bit of heat, this is a book to pick up.  Thank you, Ms. Monk, for another fabulous Island story!  I cannot wait to see what you have in store for us next!

An Ounce of Hope by Sophie Jackson….ARC Review

25106569

Synopsis:

From the fanfic phenom whose debut A Pound of Flesh had over 4.5 million reads, this sequel, An Ounce of Hope, tells the passionate love story of Carter’s best friend, Max.

Max O’Hare can’t seem to let go of his past: his drug habit, the end of his relationship with Lizzie Jordan, the woman he knows he’ll never get over, and the loss of their unborn son.

After successfully completing rehab and learning to explore his deepest fears and dreams through painting, Max meets Grace Brooks. With her innate optimism, and her love of art and photography, Grace appears to be the perfect girl. Yet no one knows where she came from, or why she keeps her past so closely guarded. Over time, Max and Grace gradually allow each other in—but will he ever be able to fully let go of his past? Or will his heart remain closed forever?

My Review:

An Ounce of Hope is the second book in author Sophie Jackson’s Pound of Flesh series.  After reading the first book and falling in love with these characters, I was so excited for Max’s story and thrilled to have received an early copy.  Filled with emotion, angst, and turmoil, this was another fantastic addition to the series.

Max and Grace are both some seriously damaged characters.  They are both hurting and trying to overcome some pretty large personal obstacles.  They both truly deserve a chance at a normal and happy life.  A life without loss and hurt.  A life they are both working extremely hard to achieve.

My heart broke for both of these characters.  I felt awful for the loss Max had endured in his young life.  I understood his downward spiral into drugs and why he had such a big chip on his shoulder.  I also knew he was worthy of redemption and admired his tenacity at gaining it.  I felt equally awful for Grace when we finally learned the why’s and how’s of where she was today.  She had truly gone though hell and back and was on the road to putting the pieces of her new life together. Together, they form an unlikely but special bond and friendship that grows into something beautiful and real.

While there were many struggles between these two, it was a journey I really enjoyed reading.  In that reading, I experienced many emotions; ranging from sadness, to anger, ad then ultimately to happiness.  In addition to the heavy moments there were also light and fun times that added a wonderful layer to Max and Grace’s story.  I chuckled more than a few times at their playful banter as they started to open up to each other.  It was wonderful to see that side of these two.  Oh, and the chemistry?  Off the charts smoking hot.  It’s a slow delicious build into scorching heat that I just loved.  And of course, getting to see glimpses of Carter and Kat was sublime!

I have to mention I’m really hoping Tate gets his own story…I love him!

Thank you, Ms. Jackson, for another wonderful installment in the Pound of Flesh series.  I cannot wait to see what’s next for this group!

About the author:

By day I’m a high school English teacher and by night I write stories about bad boys and the women they love.

I always loved reading. As a kid, my mum would take me to the local bookshop every week to buy a new book. I even created my own library on my bookshelf in my bedroom at the age of five! When I started school, I found that I loved writing too.

As I got older, I was never really inspired by anything to kick-start my writing. I had plenty of ideas, which I noted down, but I never actually sat down and wrote anything and always used lack of time as an excuse.

That all changed when three of my pupils dropped a copy of Twilight onto my desk at school. They begged me to read it, which I did, from cover to cover in a day. I devoured the other three books and then read them all over again. I was hooked. When I finished reading them the second time, I knew I needed more. I wanted to learn more about the characters, to see them in different situations and following different storylines. That’s when I happened upon FanFiction.net.

The talent in the fanfiction world is truly incredible, and I spent weeks falling down the ‘Twifiction’ rabbit hole, while falling more in love with the idea of writing my own. I was inspired.

I’m a hopeless romantic and a sucker for a love story, which is what I decided to write. A Pound of Flesh is the result.

Hidden Ink by Carie Ann Ryan…ARC Review

Hidden Ink releases TOMORROW!

1001_2016_Carrie Ann Ryan_300dpi

The Montgomery Ink series continues with the long-awaited romance between the café owner next door and the tattoo artist who’s loved her from afar.

Hailey Monroe knows the world isn’t always fair, but she’s picked herself up from the ashes once before and if she needs to, she’ll do it again. It’s been years since she first spotted the tattoo artist with a scowl that made her heart skip a beat, but now she’s finally gained the courage to approach him. Only it won’t be about what their future could bring, but how to finish healing the scars from her past.

Sloane Gordon lived through the worst kinds of hell yet the temptation next door sends him to another level. He’s kept his distance because he knows what kind of man he is versus what kind of man Hailey needs. When she comes to him with a proposition that sends his mind whirling and his soul shattering, he’ll do everything in his power to protect the woman he cares for and the secrets he’s been forced to keep.

My Review:

Hidden Ink is part of Carrie Ann Ryan’s Montgomery Ink series as well as the first novella in the 2016 1,001 Dark Nights lineup and I was SO excited to get my hands on this story.  I knew it was going to be emotional and heartfelt and Ms. Ryan didn’t disappoint.

Having been tip-toeing around their feelings for one another, it was finally time for the beautiful and resilient Hailey and the gruff and tattooed Sloane to act on their attraction.  It was time to make a move and give things a try.  Of course that would prove to be difficult for both of them.  Each of these amazing characters have their own sets of scars and misgivings.  Each has a reason for their trepidation and when we finally learn the truth behind it, my heart broke for both of them.  I don’t want to ruin anything by telling you exactly what the emotional and physical scars are, but I will tell you that Ms. Ryan wrote them in such a beautiful and respectful way.  I was moved to tears when I read the incredible act of courage Hailey has in showing Sloane what she’s been through and the aftermath of what she has suffered.  I was so proud of her and her strength.  She is one hell of an amazing heroine.  Sloane was equally brave in the purging of his past.  My heart also broke for him and the profound loss and suffering he relives every day.  But the thing I most treasured about this story was in Sloane and Hailey coming together to gather strength from each other.  To learn they have someone to lean on in one another when the times get tough.  When the emotions get to be too much to bear.  That they found this special gift was truly beautiful.   Of course, they also share some seriously heated moments and oh boy was it delish!

Of course, getting to see the rest of the Montgomery Ink crew was also a treat and one I loved.  This tattoo shop is a place I wish I could go visit in real life!

Ms. Ryan sure kicked off the 2016 1,001 Dark Nights series with an emotional and heated start.  I can’t wait to see what the future holds for this inked up crew.  Thank you for a fantastic read!

About Carrie Ann Ryan:

Profile2 (1)New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author Carrie Ann Ryan never thought she’d be a writer. Not really. No, she loved math and science and even went on to graduate school in chemistry. Yes, she read as a kid and devoured teen fiction and Harry Potter, but it wasn’t until someone handed her a romance book in her late teens that she realized that there was something out there just for her. When another author suggested she use the voices in her head for good and not evil, The Redwood Pack and all her other stories were born.

Carrie Ann is a bestselling author of over twenty novels and novellas and has so much more on her mind (and on her spreadsheets *grins*) that she isn’t planning on giving up her dream anytime soon.

What You Need by Lorelei James…ARC Review

25348171

New York Times bestseller Lorelei James introduces a new family for readers to fall in love with in the Need You series. The Lund name is synonymous with wealth and power in Minneapolis-St. Paul. But the four Lund siblings will each discover true love takes a course of its own…

As the CFO of Lund Industries, Brady Lund is the poster child for responsibility. But eighty hour work weeks leave him little time for a life outside his corner office. His brothers stage an intervention and drag him to a seedy night club…where he sees her, the buttoned up blonde from the secretarial pool who’s starred in his fantasies for months.

Lennox Greene is a woman with a rebellious past—which she carefully conceals beneath her conservative clothes. She knows flirting with her sexy, but aloof boss during working hours is a bad idea. So when Brady shows up at her favorite dive bar, sans his usual snappy suit, and catches her cutting loose, she throws caution aside and dares him to do the same.

After sparks fly, Brady finds keeping his hands off Lennox during office hours is harder than expected. While she makes him feel alive for the first time in years, a part of him wonders if she’s just using him to get ahead. And Lennox must figure out if Brady wants her for the accomplished woman she is—or the bad girl she was.

My Review:

What You Need is the first in a new series from author Lorelei James.  Being a big fan of Ms. James, I was thrilled to get an early copy of this book and I can tell you right now…this is gearing up to be one of my fave series, just by this first book alone.  I loved it.

Now, I don’t want you to think that this is a typical billionaire-meets-sassy-secretary-and-falls-in-love story.  While it is similar in that sense, it’s probably where every similarity ends.  This story gives that trope a breath of fresh air! There is so much about this book that makes it stand out. I could just sit here with a goofy grin on my face thinking about how much I adored it…but that surely won’t help get this review written!

Ok, so yes, Brady Lund is the CFO of a huge company.  He’s a workaholic in every sense of the word.  He’s gorgeous and has a killer body.  What he doesn’t have?  Tons of confidence when it comes to dating and women.  He is a little on the nerdy side, being the financial guy that he is, and he worked his tush off to get to where he is today.  That, unfortunately, hasn’t left him with much of a social life.  But now, partly because of some meddling brothers and cousins and partly because of the feisty blonde who works in the “floater” department in his company, all that is about to change.  It’s as if fate put all her ducks in a row and just sat back to watch it all unfold.

Lennox is just what Brady needed in his life and at just the right time.  She’s opposite him in a lot of ways, but also the same in many.  She’s had a pretty rough childhood but instead of being bitter, she’s learned from life’s lessons and decided to work hard to get to where she wants to be in life.  I really admired her tenacity, values and loyalty.  She’s one of a kind and in a world of people using him to get into the upper echelon of society one way or another, it’s a rarity Brady knows is special.

I loved them together.  Lennox is funny and sweet with a spice to her that I adored.  At one point she says she “never played the shrinking violet well” and no phrase could have been more true about her.  She is kind and caring but will be damned if anyone will take advantage of her or make her feel bad for who she is.  She’s just awesome.  Brady in his nerdy, and at times awkward, ways also knows how to be just a guy and is hardly affected by the wealth he has. He’s just so endearing.  He’s also sexy and take charge which really made him the whole package in my book.  I loved his interactions with his large family and his parents. They’re a special group and I really cannot wait to see more of them as this series progresses.

Between the multifaceted characters and the layers built into the package they are, the emotion in the private moments Lennox and Brady share, the family business dynamic, and so much more, Ms. James really shines.  It bears repeating that I simply loved this story.

Thank you, Ms James, for a fantastic book!  I am looking forward to more of the Lund clan!

 BUILT - Tour Teaser 1

About BUILT:

From the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of the Marked Men books comes an electrifying new spin-off series,Saints of Denver, featuring all the characters fans have been dying to read about.

Sayer Cole and Zeb Fuller couldn’t be more different. She’s country club and fine-dining, he’s cell-block and sawdust. Sayer spends her days in litigation, while Zeb spends his working with his hands. She’s French silk, he’s all denim and flannel.

Zeb’s wanted the stunning blonde since the moment he laid eyes on her. It doesn’t matter how many smooth moves he makes, the reserved lawyer seems determinedly oblivious to his interest—either that or she doesn’t return it. Sayer is certain the rough, hard, hot-as-hell Zeb could never want someone as closed off and restrained as she is, which is a shame because something tells her he might be the guy to finally melt her icy exterior.

But just as things start to heat up, Zeb is blindsided by a life altering moment from his past. He needs Sayer’s professional help to right a wrong and to save more than himself. He can’t risk what’s at stake just because his attraction to Sayer feels all consuming. But as these opposites dig in for the fight of their lives, battling together to save a family, the steam created when fire and ice collide can no longer be ignored.

My Review:

Built is the first in a new series from author Jay Crownover and had me hooked from just the cover alone.  Of course, after I dove into the story I was glued to every word and loved it from start to finish.

One of the things I loved most about this book were the two main characters and just how perfectly imperfect they were.

Sayer is pretty closed off and holds a stiff upper lip most of the time.  But that didn’t make her unrelatable.  Far from it, in fact.  She’s a gal who had a crappy childhood and knows she’s gotta make a change or risk being alone for the rest of her life.  She has a few friends, excels at her job and has plenty of compassion and heart when it comes to that, but it’s learning how to let that heart and compassion into her personal life that always trips her up.  She’s a woman who has been hurt and is emotionally closed off because of that hurt.  She’s a woman just waiting for the right guy to come and shatter those walls. Enter Zeb…

Poor Zeb has been through some pretty rough times himself.  But instead of closing off like Sayer did, he did the opposite and learned to love more of his life.  More of what life can offer and do it with a fierce determination that I just adored.  He is all man with a big soft heart and a fierce love and loyalty to those he holds close.  He doesn’t back down from a challenge and does what’s right.  He’s a fighter and faces two of the biggest fights in his life after meeting Sayer and getting some very unexpected news from his past.  I loved that he embraced the challenges and set out to make them both work.  Oh, and he’s sexy as hell.

Adding real depth to these two amazing characters is the way Ms. Crownover writes. I’ve read a lot of books and there are a lot of terms and words that are overused.  It just happens and it’s not necessarily a bad thing. I’ve come to expect certain terms or phrases when it comes to emotional scenes or love scenes, and that’s totally ok.  That didn’t happen here in this book, though.  There is something exceptional about the way Ms. Crownover wrote those special moments that really stood out to me.  The words used to describe things like Zeb’s feelings, Sayer’s emotions, the physical moments they share, were all done with a little edge of something different that had me in love with this story.  For that, I’m especially excited to read more of this series and more of Ms. Crownover’s writing.

Overall, if you’re looking for new and different, this is a book you should get on your shelf.  I highly recommend! Thank you, Ms. Crownover, for an amazing read!

Excerpt:

As though my intense and swirling thoughts had pulled Zeb into the vortex of self-pity I was struggling in, my phone vibrated in my hand with a message from him as I wandered aimlessly through the empty rooms.

I shivered at the sight of his name and then silently scolded myself for having such a powerful reaction to only his name on the screen. His message was simple but for some reason it felt full of more meaning and emotion than the three words staring up at me indicated.

Can you talk?

I bit my lip and decided how to answer. I didn’t talk to my clients after office hours were done for the day and I was already having a really hard time keeping the professional and personal lines clear where he and this case were concerned. I sighed and tapped out:

I can. Do you want me to call you?

I had started this process as his friend first and it wasn’t fair to him that my heart was pulling itself apart because of his situation. He was probably nervous and scared about what was coming next week, and I was the only one who could put some of that at ease.

There wasn’t a response for a long couple of minutes and I hated that all I could do was stare at my phone and pace back and forth while I waited to see what he was going to say. I was acting like a teenager and it was ridiculous. I snorted at myself and was headed into the kitchen to pour myself a glass of wine when the phone rang and made me jump. I wasn’t prepared for him to call me right that moment and had a bout of anxiety about answering the call before I told myself to man up and swiped my finger across the screen.

“Hey. Everything all right?” I heard a car honk its horn wherever he was calling from, and he mumbled something that wasn’t directed at me before answering.

“Fuck no.”

He was born to kill her…but he’ll risk all to save her

REVIEW:

I was thoroughly entertained with this book. It’s hard to find something new and interesting in paranormal romance, but the author took an interesting spin on the concept of The Wild Hunt. Instead of the Hunt being a group of spectres racing through the sky as an omen of war or death, this Hunt is lead by Seelie (good fey) to protect the human world from the Unseelie (bad fey).

Too bad the Kind of the Wild Hunt, Calan, needs Harley to free him from a curse. She’s the half-human daughter of a very powerful Unseelie and could be destroyed in the Hunt. Add in the insane attraction between Harley and Calan and there’s enough conflict in this story to keep you turning pages. Lots of steamy scenes that also keep you turning pages.

Hunter Deceived has everything I look for in paranormal romance and is a good setup for a new series.

Synopsis

Wild Hunt, Book 1

Every day, Harley fights the urge to embrace the dark heritage that could turn her Unseelie. Evil. Bad. A nightmarish monster like the ones that wiped out her family. The only thing keeping her on this side of Seelie is a promise made to the ghostly man who saved her that terrible night.

Whenever she’s tempted, she calls up a vision of his eyes. Hears his voice calling her back from the brink of madness. Years later, when she returns to the scene of her living hell, he’s her only hope for salvation.

Calan, the leader of the Wild Hunt, was created to protect mankind from the Unseelie Court, not love one of them. He never expected the rightness he felt with her all those years ago would explode into desire.

But saving her from a fate she can’t escape could damn them both…and leave the world open for destruction.

Warning: Contains a half-fae woman who could really use a Seelie version of AA to stay clean and monster-free. And a rider of the Wild Hunt who’ll take any risk to keep her safe from her enemies. Including himself.

Note: This book was previously published. It has been expanded and re-edited.

Excerpt

A long moment passed where they watched each other, two strangers on the verge of becoming so much more. The full impact hit her, left her a little shaky inside but not anxious. No, excitement sped her pulse.
She licked her lips, already envisioning what they’d do together. “So, am I right?”
He slid his hungry gaze to her breasts. The points stood erect, and the sheen of her skin betrayed how hot she’d gotten from touching herself.
“Oh yes, I’ll fuck you, my Harley. Sometimes hard and fast. Other times so damn slowly, you’ll beg me to fill you up.” He met her eyes. “I’ll take you so often and in so many ways, you’ll want me to be the center of your world as you are now mine.”
He released her wrists and covered one breast with his hand. The hard point pushed against his callused skin, and a jolt of electricity raced down her spine. He captured the tip she’d teased minutes ago. The small pinch arched her back.
“Do you like that?”
She flicked her gaze from his long fingers holding her nipple to his face and nodded. “Do it again.”
One corner of his mouth rose. He rolled the tip, and she gasped. Another tug clenched her core. “Beautiful. I can’t wait to watch that look pass over your face when I fuck you.”
She whimpered.
The smile giving him a roguish look turned wicked. “You do want me to ram my cock inside you and make you come apart around my dick”—he ran the tip of his tongue over his upper lip—“don’t you?”
“I…I…” She couldn’t get the words out.
He released her hands and sat back so he knelt between her thighs. Her attention shifted from the desire stamped on his face to the long length of his erection molded by his pants.
“Touch it.”

A true romantic at heart, Nancy Corrigan is convinced there’s a knight in shining armor for every woman (or man), but you won’t find damsels in distress in her stories. She adores pairing alpha heroes with women strong enough to match them and bring them to their knees. She also enjoys flipping the traditional roles in romances because her motto is—love and people should never be forced to conform to anyone’s norm.

She holds a degree in chemistry and has worked in research but now focuses on ensuring quality. She considers it the perfect outlet for her as she’s the first to admit she has some OCD tendencies. It carries over into her writing life too. While engrossed in a novel, she has a habit of forgetting to eat and sleep. Fortunately, she’s married to her own knight in shining armor who understands her oddities and loves her anyway. They reside in Pennsylvania with their three children, dog, snake and guinea pigs. Viking Warrior Rising by Asa Maria Bradley…Review

25263838

Synopsis:

Immortal Vikings are among us.

Leif Skarsganger and his elite band of immortal warriors have been charged to protect humanity from the evil Norse god Loki.

Under attack from Loki’s minions, Leif is shocked to encounter a dark-haired beauty who fights like a warrior herself. Wounded and feverish, the Viking kisses her, inadvertently triggering an ancient Norse bond. But when Naya Brisbane breaks away and disappears before the bond is completed, Leif’s warrior spirit goes berserk. If Leif doesn’t find her fast, he’s going to lose himself to permanent battle fury.

But Naya doesn’t want to be found…and he’ll do anything to find her. Because they’re both running out of time.

My Review:

SQUEEE! That’s exactly how I’ll sound when the next book in this series comes out! Viking Warrior Rising is the first in a new paranormal romance series and the debut for author Asa Maria Bradley. I was pretty blown away by the worldbuilding. It’s complex but easy to follow, giving me one of those rare reads when putting the book down is a hardship. Bradley mixes ancient Norse mythology with modern government conspiracies. It’s fun and fascinating.

In my many, many conversations I’ve had with fellow readers about this book, I’ve likened Viking Warrior Rising to early Black Dagger Brotherhood, and, like that series, this first installment is about the leader, but instead of ancient vampire warriors we have a band of Viking warriors. Leif is their King and when our heroine Naya triggers an ancient Viking bond, things get interesting. Leif’s inner berserker has chosen her as it’s mate and now it’s up to Leif to convince Naya to complete the bond. Understandably she’s a little skittish…at first.

The band of Viking warriors promises lots of great stories to come and I, for one, will be lined up to read them all.

Drawn Through You by Sarina Rhodes…Review

Drawn Through You_cover

Synopsis:

What if the brooding billionaire wore pencil skirts and Louboutins? What if the impressionable intern was a small-town furniture maker with boyish charm?

Cole Jacobson always thought he would take after his father and pursue his dreams. But when the family business falters and he’s forced to accept his uncle’s help, Cole is summoned to the big city for a job he never wanted.

Priorities become obscured when Cole finds himself working for Shaun Wright, the strong, intimidating, and ruthlessly attractive business partner at his uncle’s contracting firm. Forced to either sacrifice his hard-won integrity or leave behind the one thing that brings him true happiness, Cole must make a decision that could cost him both. A decision only complicated by the sexy, inscrutable woman he can’t stop thinking about. A woman who just might be as intrigued as he is to cross professional boundaries.

A provocative, trope-twisting romance, Sarina Rhoads’s Drawn Through You finally puts the heroine on the other side of the desk.

My Review:

Romance novels get a bad rap for being formulaic and to a degree it’s true. I mean, you always get your happily ever after or happy for now, but that’s what makes it a romance. And at some point the hero and heroine have to go through a conflict to get to their particular brand of happy, but how they get there is different for every book. Ever couple is different. Sarina Rhoads’s Drawn Through You goes a step further by turning a popular trope on its head.

My eyes were starting to glaze over whenever I saw or heard about another billionaire book. But to have the heroine be in the position of power? Yes, please! The author does a good job of making both Shaun and Cole believable, as well as the incendiary chemistry. The sex scenes are hot, hot, HOT! Remember phone sex? It’s alive and well in Drawn Through You! No video, no Skyping, just good old-fashioned phone sex.

The role reversal worked well, thanks to a smart story. The characters were well developed and believable as they navigated through some corporate intrigue and the usual romantic pitfalls all new couples face (plus one or two unexpected things). If you want something a little different than your average billionaire romance, check out Drawn Through You.
