UNDER PRESSURE Synopsis:

He can protect anything except his heart

Leese Phelps’s road hasn’t been an easy one, but it’s brought him to the perfect job—working for the elite Body Armor security agency. And what his newest assignment lacks in size, she makes up for in fire and backbone. But being drawn to Catalina Nicholson is a dangerous complication, especially since it could be the very man who hired Leese who’s threatening her.

What Catalina knows could get her killed. But who’d believe the sordid truth about her powerful stepfather? Beyond Leese’s ripped body and brooding gaze is a man of impeccable honor. He’s the last person she expects to trust—and the first who’s ever made her feel safe. And he’s the only one who can help her expose a deadly secret, if they can just stay alive long enough…

My Review:

Under Pressure is the debut in a new spin-off series from Lori Foster, an author I always love reading.  Under Pressure kicks off the Body Armor series with a sexy, thrilling, and exciting start.  I loved it!

The book opens with Cat (Catalina) on the run and trying to get into hiding in an attempt to save her life.  Hired to be the one to protect her, Leese steps in, and immediately the sparks start to fly.  Once the mystery start to unfold as to who is after Cat and what exactly they are in for, I was hooked. I mean when you’ve got wealth, power, scandal, and murder, how could I not be?  I loved Leese and his loyal, cool under pressure, sexy style.  I love Cat’s ability to take a stand for what was right and her non nonsense attitude when it came to speaking her mind.  Together the sexual tension was off the charts and I loved the push and pull between them in Cat making no bones about her attraction and Leese trying to keep a professional distance (of course I’m sure you can guess it won’t last the whole book 😉 ) From start to finish this was a great read!

I also have to say how much I loved seeing some of our old friends from Ms. Foster’s Ultimate series.  That crew of fighters is still one of my faves!

With developed characters and plot filled with thrilling excitement, I know you’ll love Under Pressure as much as I did!

“Romantic thriller veteran Foster has been honing her skill for a long time, and it’s clear she’s at the top of her game here. Readers will find themselves, along with her colorful cast of supporting characters, rooting for a happy-ever-after.”

– Kirkus Reviews

“Teasing and humorous dialogue, sizzling sex scenes, tender moments, and overriding tension show Foster’s skill as a balanced storyteller. She sets up a continuing story line for the series with the mystery of who murdered the firm’s founder, Sahara’s brother, but this thread never overwhelms the gripping main story, which will leave readers breathless.”

I have to say that I am really love this side of Katee Robert.  Most people read her more contemporary romance books, but I am absolutely loving her romantic suspense side.  And this book is definitely more thriller and suspense than romance, but there is a tiny bit of it.

So if you read the synopsis (which I would assume one has) then you know that Eden has returned to her childhood town, one she vowed never to return to.  However, it’s the circumstances that has her more on edge than just being back home.

Eden is helping out the local police unofficially on a case where the trail leads to her mother’s cult, Elysia.  Elysia is based on the Greek myth of Demeter and Persephone.

There are so many things I love about this book.  Katee is able to write a very thrilling and suspenseful plot that leaves you guessing til the very end.  Katee does a great job of explaining the cult’s beliefs and culture, which helps filtrate into the case they are trying to solve.

Everything ties together so perfectly in the end.  And what makes it so great is how Katee slowly and methodically gives you all the pieces to slowly put together.  Trust me – you may think you have all the pieces in place perfectly together, until you realize that there is more to the puzzle.

The Devil’s Daughter is captivating, thrilling and suspenseful must read.  A fantastic start to her newest series.

Excerpt

By the time she made it back to the courtyard, it was empty, everyone having gone off to their varying duties. Martha might be a monster of a particular variety, but she had a well-run establishment. But then, she would. Keep her people too busy to stop and wonder about some of the insane shit she preaches. That saying about idle hands didn’t originate with the Greeks, but her mother had never been shy about incorporating whatever dogma she found most useful. No one questioned it.

No one but Eden.

And she’d paid for every question she’d asked.

She stopped next to her car, slowing her movements, because if she didn’t exert total control, she was going to fling herself into the driver’s seat and tear out of here as fast as the car could go. She wouldn’t stop in Clear Springs. She’d just keep driving until she put a few states between her and Elysia.

Not an option. You made damn sure of that.

She noticed the door was unlocked and frowned. Had she locked it when she got here? Eden couldn’t be sure. She’d been so rattled and practically bursting with adrenaline and dread that it was entirely possible she’d headed for her mother’s house without pausing to lock the door.

But she didn’t think so.

She opened the driver’s door cautiously, half expecting something to explode. She only had cursory bomb training, so even if she swept the vehicle, she couldn’t be sure she’d find something. If there was even something to find. Hello, paranoia, my old friend. She turned a slow circle, trying to figure out if someone would have had enough time to plant something. If a person had the know-how, setting up a bomb in a half hour was cake.

Way to be reassuring.

She leaned back into the car, a flash of white and yellow catching her eye. Frowning, she leaned in farther and used the pen in her cup holder to hook the circular wreath of daisies lying on the floorboard of the passenger side. It looked like the kind of thing she’d made when she was a kid and bored out of her ever-loving mind during the summer. She’d weave together the flowers that grew in the fields of Elysia into something very similar to this and wear it while she pretended she was Persephone, just waiting for her Hades to appear and whisk her away to be his queen. Eden dropped it like it’d caught fire. She’d completely forgotten about playing that game. Hell, no one knew she’d done it. She’d always been alone out there.

Or so she’d thought.

She wanted to throw the flowers away, to rip the wreath apart and grind it beneath her boots. But it was most definitely some kind of evidence. Even if there was no trace on there to find whoever had left it, it was proof that someone had been watching her when she got here.

Apparently my instincts aren’t as ravaged as I thought.

She wasn’t sure if that was comforting or terrifying.

EXCERPT

His large hand presses against my knee under the table. “Can we talk?”

Jesus, his touch. It’s the first time I’ve felt the weight of his palm on me since Aspen. It’s heavy. Huge. Callused. Instinctually I shift forward, my body no longer mine to command. He doesn’t move his hand. Just his thumb. It presses harder, dragging downward. I grip my armrests to keep from sliding to the floor. He stares at me, waiting for my answer.

Yes. No. Maybe. I choose silence.

The way our lives are entrenched with our friends, I’ll have to spend time with him, and I can’t keep pretending I can block him out. Moving here was about starting fresh, which means letting go of this grudge. But talking about Aspen could stir up more feelings, the same way the experience spurred my need to find Rose. If we talk about our time in the hot tub, it could unhinge me further.

Our waiter arrives to take our order, and Nico’s thumb moves again, a tiny brush, his skin against mine, sending a pulse between my thighs. My sanity plummets. I shout, “Chicken,” like a lunatic as I push away from the table.

Nico’s hand slides from my knee, but his eyes don’t waver. I feel his gaze on my back as I hurry to the bathroom. The second I get inside, I close the door and lean against it, thankful it’s not a public room with several stalls. I take a few deep breaths.

How can that bit of contact turn me inside out? The smallest touch?

Memories of his other touches flip through my mind, snippets of skin and ink, flashes of ecstasy.

My back arching.

His fingers exploring.

The curve of his inked shoulder.

His huge hands.

The sheer size of him.

We might not have had sex, and the details may be fuzzy, but there’s no doubt it was the hottest night I’ve ever had. What isn’t fuzzy is the time I spent with him in the hot tub prior, and how he took advantage of my vulnerability.

Goddamn Nico. And Goddamn Aspen.

Hooked on Trouble is the third and final book in Kelly’s series, Over the Top.  And it’s one I have been dying to heard.

“To show someone rise, you have to show them fall.”

This is Nico and Raven’s story.  And let me tell you, it’s one hell of an emotional ride.  Raven has always kept her heart locked up.  She doesn’t do feelings and has always been one to put her feelings in little compartments and lock them away forever.  Until Nico.  Until that one night she gives him a glimpse of who she is.  And he destroys her.

Nico sees himself as the only solid foundation for his family.  He’s been trying to help his brother from ending up in prison like their father and keeping his sister on the straight and narrow and away from drugs.  It’s a lot for one person to handle, but he does it because he feels it’s his duty.  But only a few know of his family’s issues – he doesn’t open up about that part of his life much.  And when he meets Raven, he keeps that part under lock and key.  A heartbreaking mistake.

Nico and Raven realize they need to handle their problems or risk causing friction and possibly losing friends over their issues.  But what they can’t deny is their attraction to one another – something that has no diminished since their last and only night together.

Nico is a huge mushy marshmallow.  He may a very strong cop on the outside, but inside, he’s all feelings and mush.  And he’ll do anything and everything to protect those he loves.  Raven is the complete opposite.  Even though they’ve had very similar upbringings, they made different decisions and that’s cause Raven is be more hard and rigid.  But something in Nico brings out the soft side of her.

“Our past choices shape us, but our future ones define us.”

I love Nico and Raven’s story.  It’s not all butterflies and rainbows.  There are some dark tales that work their way into their lives.  And it causes them both to re-evaluate things and their relationship.

Kelly has written another amazing story and I am so glad that we finally got Nico and Raven’s story. I knew it wasn’t going to be a fluffy romance but I loved how she mixed the hard edges with some soft edges – made the story even better.  And I love reading about Shay and Kolton along with Lily and Sawyer. I hate to see them end but all their stories were beautiful and I loved each journey.

I look forward to reading more from Kelly in the future.

Blurb:

more than generous. Plus, there are hot football players at the house all the

Until her life turns into an absolute
nightmare. The media is abuzz with rumors that she and her boss Drew Callahan

She creates a fake relationship between
Sydney and one of the rookie players on Drew’s team. Wade Knox is forever
indebted to Drew and Fable and readily agrees to the set up. Pretending to be
in a romantic relationship with the hot nanny for a week—how hard can it be?
Crazy how it only takes one week for two
people to fall head over heels in love…
(This mash-up new adult romance features
characters from both the One Week Girlfriend series and The Rules series.)

Safe Bet is the fourth book in The Rules series.  It can be read as a stand-a-lone as I have read none of the other books in this series.  You do get to hear from Drew and Fable but I didn’t feel confused by anything.  If anything, it made me more intrigued to read their story.

I enjoyed reading this story.  It was fairly quick and sweet.  There is no drama or angst.  And I love that this was a slow build in the relationship.  Sydney and Wade are attracted to one another before they are thrown into this whole fake relationship.  I felt that helped them in this whole scheme and made everything flow better.  And as I said, it’s a slow build – nothing is quick.  We can fee and see it as the story progresses.

I love the way Monica tells her stories and how she writes her characters.  Sydney and Wade are both trying to forge a new path in their lives and make up for past mistakes.  They own those mistakes and are both doing what they can to move forward.  They problems they face together were real and that helped make them whole story more real to readers.

As I said, we got updates on Drew and Fable.  And for those like me who have no read any of the books in this series, it’s enough to pique your interest and go back to read their tales.

Monica has another great book in the sweet, sexy, and breezy reads!

Depraved Heart by Patricia Cornwell…Blog Tour Stop & Review

About Depraved Heart

Paperback: 496 pages
Publisher: William Morrow Paperbacks (January 3, 2017)

Dr. Kay Scarpetta is working a highly suspicious death scene in Cambridge, Massachusetts, when an emergency alert sounds on her phone. A video link seems to be from her niece Lucy. But how can it be? It’s clearly a surveillance film of Lucy taken almost twenty years ago.

As Scarpetta watches she comes to grips with frightening secrets about her niece. That first clip and others sent soon after raise dangerous implications that increasingly isolate Scarpetta and leave her confused, alarmed, and not knowing where to turn. The diabolical presence and singularly depraved heart behind what unfolds seems obvious but strangely, not to the FBI. Certainly that’s the message they send when they start harassing Lucy and begin building a case that could send her to prison for the rest of her life.

In the latest novel in her bestselling series featuring medical examiner Dr. Kay Scarpetta, Cornwell captivates readers again with the jolting twists, high-wire tension, and cutting-edge forensic detail for which she is renowned, proving yet again why she is the world’s number one bestselling crime writer.

My Review:

Depraved Heart is book number 23 in author Patricia Cornwell’s Kay Scarpetta series and admittedly the first in the series I have read.  I’m a huge fan of forensic, psychological, and mystery TV so I figured I would give this series a try.  Well, I wasn’t disappointed.  This book with filled with suspense and I loved it.

Someone is trying to frame Dr. Kay Scarpetta’s niece and it seems to be at the hands of someone they had been dealing with, and fearing, for the last twenty years.  Someone they had counted out but never really forgotten about.  Someone wha was beyond mentally unstable and completely diabolical.  Now, they are all on a mission to figure out just what’s going on, who is sending these bizarre videos from twenty years ago to Dr. Scarpetta’s phone, and how to get out of this alive.

From start to finish I was kept on the edge of my seat.  The pieces of this puzzle are given to the reader on a slow and steady pace which only added to the overall suspense.  There were more than a few times I actually said “wow, this woman is completely psychotic” out loud.  I also enjoyed the heavy forensic details in the book.  At times it was a lot to digest while trying to keep up with what was going on with Lucy but it really did add an authentic layer that I appreciated.  Now, I can’t give anything away as to who ends up being responsible for orchestrating this entire scheme but I will tell you to buckle up for a crazy ride! My mother has been a huge fan of Ms. Cornwell for years and I was really happy I gave this series a try.  I will certainly be reading more!

Thank you, Ms. Cornwell, for one hell of a book!  I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a well written and well thought out psychological thriller.

Wild Aces #3
Adult Contemporary Romance
Penguin/Berkley

Synopsis:

The author of Into the Blue and Fly with Me returns with the newest, hot and high-flying Wild Aces romance…

A year after losing her husband, Joker, the squadron commander of the Wild Aces, Dani Peterson gets an offer from his best friend, Alex “Easy” Rogers, to help fix up her house. Dani accepts, and their friendship grows—along with an undeniable attraction.

Racked by guilt for loving his best friend’s widow, Easy’s caught between what he wants and can’t have. Until one night everything changes, and the woman who’s always held his heart ends up in his arms. Yet as Easy leaves for his next deployment, he and Dani are torn between their feelings and their loyalty to Joker’s memory.

But when Dani discovers something that sends them both into a spin, the conflicted lovers must overcome the past to navigate a future together…

My Review:

On Broken Wings is part of author Chanel Cleeton’s Wild Aces Series, and while it can be read as a standalone, in oder to experience the intense emotion in Dani and Easy’s relationship, I highly recommend reading the first two books…because this relationship is so touching and beautiful you WON’T want to miss a second of this building storm!

Where to even begin in telling you all how much I loved this book?  A heroine who has suffered a devastating and crippling loss, not just once but twice, in her lifetime.  Trying to pick up the pieces and hold herself together. Trying to jut survive each day.  A hero with a deep love for someone he could never ever have…until now.  His feelings running so deep and so pure for a woman he has loved from afar for as long as he can remember.  The push and pull of attraction and swirling emotions between two people who share such an intense history but don’t know what to make of what they are feeling.  How to reconcile all of it.  They both know it’s ok to move on but neither one knows how and neither one wants to put the friendship they have on the line in order to explore their attraction. Because what if it all blew up in their faces?  She’s sure she wouldn’t survive another loss.  He just wants to be happy, even if for a moment. Man, there is just SO much to love about this book! My chest ached for these two.  I wanted nothing more than for them to have their chance at a happy ever after and I was a nervous wreck they wouldn’t get it.  Luckily fate was on their side and gave them the perfect reason to give life together a chance.  *dreamy sigh* I just adored this book!

I mentioned earlier that you really should read the first two books in the series to understand the emotional connection between Easy and Dani.  Truly, what they share is so special and I definitely want you to get the whole scope of what they’ve been through, apart and together.  I tried so hard not to devour this book in one sitting but I just couldn’t!

Thank you, Ms. Cleeton, for this beautiful and emotional read.  It’s a story I won’t soon forget!

Take me, all of me, broken and in pieces, or say to hell with me.”

WARNING!
This book will break your heart!
From the best-selling romance author of THE EDUCATION OF SEBASTIAN comes a sexy, heart-breaking and heart-warming story about one man and his dog. (Standalone)

Alex is lost and alone, with only his dog, Stan for company. He doesn’t expect kindness from anyone anymore, but sometimes hope can be found in the most unlikely places. He has a second chance at happiness, but there’s a dark side to Alex, and a reason that more than one person has called him crazy.
Single mother Dawn is doing just fine. Except that her ex- is a pain in the ass, her sister isn’t speaking to her, and her love life is on the endangered list.
At least her job as a veterinarian is going well. Until a crazy-looking guy arrives at her office accompanied by an aging dog with toothache. Or maybe Alex Winters isn’t so crazy after all, just … different.
Dawn realizes that she’s treated him the same way that all the gossips in town have treated her—people can be very cruel.

Contains scenes of an adult nature.

This is a standalone novel with no cliff-hanger.

My Review:

As with every one of Jane Harvey-Berrick’s books, there is a wonderful element of high emotion.  I know that with every book of hers I read, I will fall in love with a damaged hero.  Boy oh boy, this was no exception.  From the very beginning, my heart was totally broken for Alex.  He was a mysterious character with a past I knew was not only going to explain why he was the way he was today but was also going to gut me.  Indeed I was right.  Alex has been chewed up and spit out by love and loss and he’s desperately trying to put the pieces back together. That road leads him to cross paths with a local woman and her daughter in the town he is trying to rebuild his life in.  Their story holds many ups and downs that had me laughing and crying and praying for a happy ever after for them.  Now, I won’t spoil anything but I will say that it ended simply perfectly.

Beyond Alex and his relationships with the people in this book is his amazing and special relationship with his dog, Stan.  Wow.  Just wow.  Their relationship was written with such a touching amount of pure love and devotion that comes in that special bond between a guy and his furry best friend.  From how Stan came into Alex’s life to how we get to read what Stan is thinking at times, Ms. Harvey-Berrick gave this book that extra special layer that only she can.  It was incredible and I loved it so damn much.

I will warn you, have some tissues handy for this read, but I know you’ll love it as much as I did.  Thank you, Ms. Harvey-Berrick for yet another fantastic read.

Four Loves

“I had a really nice time today, Alex. We both did.”
He nodded slowly, seeming to ponder my words.
“Nice. Nice?”
“You don’t like that word?”
His reply wasn’t acerbic, if anything, he sounded thoughtful.
“I haven’t had a whole lot of nice.”
I wondered if I should take his words as an opportunity to dig deeper, but he seemed more closed off now and a little sad, and I didn’t want to spoil such a lovely day.
“Nice is good,” I agreed evenly, and was happy when he forced a small smile. “Thank you—for everything.”
I leaned across to kiss him on the cheek, surprised by my own boldness. His eyes widened and he sucked in a quick breath.
Was the world still spinning or had time frozen as we sat there, creatures in the dark our only witnesses?
Is love a disease? An affliction? Or is it something catching? Can you catch love, can you hold it in your hands, can it be communicated like a plague? Or is it like an infectious laugh that makes your eyes water and your stomach hurt, even though the joke isn’t funny?
I’d begun to believe I was immune to love—the kind that exists between a man and a woman. Instead, I’d been gifted an ocean of love for my daughter. I thought perhaps that had filled me full, leaving no room for other love. Other loves.
My lips tingled from the roughness of his day-old stubble.
And is it love when you want someone’s smile as much as you want their body? When their laughter softens your words to a prayer?
My heart began to race.
Or is it sheer animal lust, a torrent of hormones assaulting your blood, heating you from the inside out?
He reached out to touch me, questions in his shadowed eyes as he cupped my cheek. I sighed and leaned into him, eyelids fluttering.
My mother always says it’s the softness of men that she loves most, because it’s at the center of them. Their outsides are hard with muscle; their bodies large, larger than hers—or mine—heavier, stronger. So when a man’s touch is soft, when his fingers drift across your skin like sunbeams, then you’re seeing into his soul.
I never understood. I never believed her.
Until now.
So gently, so very gently, he pressed his dry lips against mine, and I wrapped my arms around his neck, kissing him back.
He tasted of coffee, and he smelled like sunshine and pine forest.
Gentleness turned to want, and want turned to need, and I thought my mother was wrong. I wanted to feel the strength of his body surrounding me, on top of me. I wanted to feel his hardness against me, inside me. I was wearied by supporting the weight of my family alone. I wanted someone to carry me. For just a little while. A single moment.
The wooden arm of the chair pressed into my ribs as I leaned across, and I tried to ignore it. But Alex lifted me onto his lap, shocking a gasp out of me that ended with a soft laugh, because maybe he’d read my mind, because maybe he wanted the same things I did. And then we were kissing again. Again and again for the longest time, hesitance turning to urgency, and long languid kisses to heated mouths and hot sighs.
My fingers fumbled to find the hem of his shirt as I floundered my way down his chest, sliding my palms across warm skin that left shivers in their wake. I started pushing the material upward, and Alex leaned forward and dragged the shirt off, tossing it to the ground impatiently.
All day, I’d longed to touch, yearned to taste, feared to want. I was tired of caution, weary of wading through life alone. If this was just one night, I’d celebrate it forever, and if it was more … well, that was a bridge still to be crossed, a land waiting for discovery.
My hands swept down his back, reading his skin with my fingers as if sight didn’t exist, while we continued to kiss, tongues tasting, learning and teaching. I gripped his biceps, my fingers digging into the ridge of muscle, shuddering with pleasure as he cupped my breast with one hand, the other anchored behind my back to stop me from falling.
Too late.
I’d already fallen for Alex Winters, man of mystery, animal lover, gentle soul, wounded warrior in the battle of life. Or maybe that’s just life. We’re all survivors, one way or another.

Four Loves

He still reminded me of a Mountain Man, and he appeared to be wearing the clothes that I’d thought were rags. His long, shaggy brown hair and thick beard hid most of his face. A shudder of apprehension ran through me.
He seemed just as ill at ease as he had been by the lake, his eyes darting around restlessly, but then he walked around to the passenger door and I lost sight of him.
When he reappeared, he was carrying a large dog, one that easily weighed 80 or 90 pounds. He must have been strong because he carried the weight easily. I recalled the thick slabs of muscle that sculpted his chest and arms when I’d seen him earlier. Yes, there was no doubt that he was strong, but as he held his pet, his hands were gentle.
I watched his chin bob, and I realized that he was talking to his dog.
Carefully, he set the animal on the ground and fixed a leash around its neck.
The dog immediately sat down and refused to budge. His coat was thick and looked glossy and healthy, his muzzle starting to gray. I guessed he was part retriever, part mastiff—large and solid. And heavy.
Ashley giggled as the man tugged on the leash, but the dog still wouldn’t move. The man stood still, looking at his pet, his hands on his hips, then he shook his head in defeat. Bending down, he scooped up the dog again and shouldered his way through the door into the office.
Now he was closer, I could study him in more detail.
His hair was a tangle of light brown with sun-blond lights, still uncombed, an off-putting mess of wild, crazy curls. His clothes were even worse now I could see him wearing them, unkempt and torn as if he’d given up, but they were clean. And when he stopped in front of Ashley, I caught the faint scent of soap and laundry detergent—no cologne. This man was a paradox.
Ashley smiled tightly from her position behind the reception desk.
“Mr. Winters and Stan, is that right?”
He nodded but didn’t speak, still holding his dog in his arms. His face was grim, as if he’d never smiled, never thought of smiling.
So this was the man who’d bought Old Joe’s place? I immediately felt guilty that I’d assumed he was trespassing and camping illegally. I didn’t know that somebody had already moved into the property. Technically, I’d been the interloper this morning. I felt like such a judgmental bitch. But he’d really scared me, and I hadn’t been thinking clearly.
“I’m so sorry,” Ashley said with fake sweetness, “but Dr. Petz, our male veterinarian, had to go out on an emergency visit. Dr. Andrews over there is available.”
He turned to stare at me and his body stiffened. I saw a flicker of recognition in his eyes before he dropped his gaze to the floor again. I thought for sure that he’d turn and walk out, but then he glanced at his dog and I saw the expression soften in his curious golden-brown eyes as he peered up at me and nodded slowly.
“Great!” said Ashley, her gaze glancing across to me. “I’ve got basic information from your email, but if you could just fill out this form and…”
“Maybe you’d like to bring Stan into the examination room, Mr. Winters,” I interrupted quickly. “He looks rather heavy.”
The man blinked twice, but carried the dog inside without commenting or even looking at Ashley.
“Rude!” Ashley said, not quietly enough, and although I agreed, I shot her a look and took the form from her.
She leaned toward me, her eyes wide as her voice dropped to an urgent whisper.
“I’ll keep my ears open, Dawn. He looks kind of weird. You know, serial killer weird.”
I pressed my lips together and followed my new client.

Screw him and his perfect resume.

And flawless face.

And delicious body.

And probably game-winning stamina. I’m going to be a mess today just thinking about it.

“Why was he in your office?” Macie asks, right as I was ready to mentally remove his clothes. “Oh my God, Danielle! I just pulled him up. Why can’t I be you? Just for a day?”

“I’m quite happy I’m me today,” I laugh. “He just walked off the elevator on the wrong floor and followed me to my office.”

“Why?”

“Does it matter? Now I’m sitting here with wet panties, his ‘Fuck me’ cologne filling my office, and all sorts of ideas as to what his body looks like under those sweatpants and t-shirt.”

I started reading this book with the expectation that it was my everyday romance sports novel. However, I was pleasantly surprise that Adriana Locke gave me my “everyday romance” with such humor and wonderful character this book was not a mundane read. The banter between Ryan Danielle (AKA Dani) and Lincoln Landry was so great, I often found myself smiling and laughing out loud.

These two come together by a chance elevator ride and from there the love just blossoms. It was great to see Dani not just fall ahead over hills for Lincoln. She knows his love for baseball is not only his passion but his job. However, she fears that this will rip him away from her. Lincoln is currently injured and working hard to recover so he can return to what he loves most in the world, baseball. The possibility of Lincoln returning to the game looms heavy on Dani because she knows from experience that athletes always choose the game before her. Not wanting Lincoln to make that choice, she starts to pull away from him again. This is where I fell in love with this story! I assume, yes he picks baseball, lives his life a little and realizes that he loves her and once he realizes this he runs into her open arms. You know the typical love story. Like I said Adriana Locke takes the mundane love story and turns it into a story that melts your heart if you are a romance lover like myself. It was such a sweet love story with characters I adore!

Playing the Player by Lisa Brown Roberts….Review

Playing the Player by Lisa Brown Roberts

BLURB

Trina Clemons needed the money. Why else would she – the most organized, prepared student in school – spend the summer as a nanny and partner with the biggest slacker ever? Now she’s ready to tackle nannyhood with her big binder of research and schedules. Just don’t ask her about the secret job of “fixing” the bad habits of a certain high school player…

Slade Edmunds prefers easy hook-ups, and Trina is definitely not his type. She’s all structure and rules, while Slade wants to just have fun. Fortunately, Trina has no idea about the bet Slade made with his best friend that he can totally get her to unwind by the end of summer…

Then the weirdest thing happens. There’s chemistry. A lot of it. But nothing gets between a boy and a girl like a big, fat secret…

Disclaimer: This Entangled Teen Crush book contains a straight/gay BFF bromance, an irresistibly kissable bad boy, a good girl who wants to be kissed, some epic babysitting fails, and the occasional f-bomb.

Playing the Player is very cute YA contemporary romance.  Lisa really knows how to play out these young adult issues and topics.

I have no doubt that many young adults will love this story.  I enjoyed reading about the characters different personalities and watching each grow a bit.  These are very reluctant to be hanging out together for their summer job but neither really have a choice.

The beginning moved at a great pace as they got to know one another and saw a different side to one another.  However, I felt the conflict and how it was resolved felt sort of rushed at the end. I don’t think there was really any other way to have that play out.  So I think my issue with the pace was the timeline everything was based on.  The beginning went day to day and then near the end, each chapter was sort of fast forwarded weeks instead of the day to day as is was before. Other than that, I felt the book was well written and flowed well.

If you are looking for a quick, light read or something where you don’t want to get too caught up in drama, this is the book for you.  It’s a perfect read for young adults.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Lisa Brown Roberts still hasn’t recovered from the teenage trauma of nearly tweezing off both eyebrows and having to pencil them in for an entire school year. This and other angst-filled memories inspire her to write YA books about navigating life’s painful and funny dramas, and falling in love along the way. Her novel PLAYING THE PLAYER won the 2016 Heart of Denver RWA Aspen Gold award in the YA category.

Her almost forever home is Colorado, though she occasionally pines for the days when she lived within walking distance of the Pacific Ocean. Her house is full of books, boys, several four-legged prima donnas, and lots of laughter.

Viola Fisher is the epitome of perfection.

She despises my one-night stands and mocks my less-than-classy habits.

She’s smart, beautiful, and too good to be true.

And I want her.

If she were anyone else, I’d have made my move years ago, but considering she’s my best friend’s little sister, she’s always been off-limits. Not to mention how much she loathes my very existence.

Hating me is her religion, but needing her is mine. Her sexy curves and filthy smart mouth make me want her even more, and I’m more determined than ever to change her mind.

I’ll prove I’m done playing games.

But until then, we’ll continue to play by her rules.

Viola Fisher may have won the battle, but the war isn’t over yet.

my-review

If you read the first book in this series, This Is War, then you will be pleasantly surprised by this book.  Because they are like complete opposites in how Travis and Viola interact with one another.

Travis is determined to prove himself to Viola.  That she can trust him.  That she’s it for him.  And Viola wants that – has always truly wanted that.  But can these truly make it work with everything that has happened over the years??  And what about Drew – what will be say – if he finds out about these two??

I love how these two authors allowed things to develop in this story.  Everything is natural and flows like it should.  Travis and Viola slowly move their relationship along all the while keeping it from Drew until it’s a good time to tell him.

Another huge big deal is that neither Travis or Viola give up their dreams just because they are finally figuring out things between them.  Everything that happens in this book is very natural, minus Mia and her outrageous antics.  And it’s her antics that causes some issues between everyone.

This Is Love plays out beautifully.  These two amazing authors have won me over with these characters.  The interactions between all of them is amazing (except Mia – she needs a hug around her neck with my hands).

If you’re looking for a series where you can fall in love with all the characters after you’ve berated a few of them for being idiots, then this is the series for you!
