we shouldn't live now square

SYNOPSIS:

Bennett Fox walked into my life on one hell of a crappy Monday morning.

I was late for the first day at my new job—a job I’d now have to compete for even though I’d already worked eight years to earn it, because of an unexpected merger.

While I lugged my belongings up to my new office, a meter maid wrote me a parking summons.

She’d ticketed a long line of cars—except for the Audi parked in front of me, which happened to be the same make and model as mine.

Annoyed, I decided to regift my ticket to the car that had evaded a fine. Chances were, the owner would pay it and be none the wiser.

Except, I accidentally broke the windshield wiper while slipping the ticket onto the car’s window.

Seriously, my day couldn’t get any worse.

Things started to perk up when I ran into a gorgeous man in the elevator. We had one of those brief moments that only happened in movies.

You know the deal…your body lights up, fireworks go off, and the air around you crackles with electricity.

His heated stare left me flushed when I stepped off the elevator.

Maybe things here wouldn’t be so bad after all.

Or so I thought.

Until I walked into my new boss’s office and met my competition.

The gorgeous man from the elevator was now my nemesis. His heated stare wasn’t because of any mutual attraction. It was because he’d seen me vandalize his car. And now he couldn’t wait to annihilate his rival.

There’s a fine line between love and hate—and we shouldn’t cross it.

We shouldn’t—but straddling that line could be so much fun.

My Review:

What are the things Vi Keeland does best in every book?  A sexy hero with a vulnerable side,  a sassy and damn like-able heroine, delicious banter between the two, and off the charts heated moments.

This book was no exception and had me glued to every page.

I’m a sucker for an enemies to lovers story and Bennett and Annalise were all that and a bag of chips.  From their very first meeting, I knew the sparks would fly and their connection would be unbreakable.  Of course, Ms. Keeland always adds a heaping spoonful of emotion with her characters and that only adds to the dynamic between these two characters.

Once again, Ms. Keeland nails it!  I can’t wait to see what she has in store for us next!

Release Day Blitz & Review….Fool Me Once by Nicole Williams

AP new - synopsis.jpg

Second chances are for kids, diets, and shelter pets—not for relationships. Especially not one like Chase and Emma’s.

Before he was writing chart-topping hits and smashing record sales, Chase Lawson was Emma’s childhood friend and first love. They promised each other forever, but forever expired at eighteen, when he landed a major record deal and left Emma and their hometown behind.

Ten years later, he shows up at their high school reunion with a proposition she can’t refuse. Six months. Seven figures. He gets a chance to clean up his reputation, and she gets the means to restore the old family farmhouse. It’s only for show—hold hands in public, kiss for the cameras—but boundaries blur behind closed doors.

It isn’t long before Emma feels her resolve slipping, crushed by the shadow of the boy she grew to love in the man selling out stadiums of present. Can Emma resist one of the most irresistible bachelors in the world? Or will she fall for the same man twice?

“We’ve got to go over something first,” he said, smirking at my efforts to budge his arm.
“What?” I asked, annoyed.
“We’re going to be a couple in the public’s eyes. Which means we’re going to have to do certain things that couples do.”
I blinked at him. “Couples don’t do that in public. At least not the normal ones.”
He gave a grunt of disbelief. “I’m not talking about sex.”
“Then what are you talking about?” My voice was rising the more flustered I became. The lack of apparel, the warm water, the way Chase’s brown eyes seemed to melt when he looked at me a certain way . . . I was struggling to keep my composure.
“Kissing.” He shrugged as though it were obvious. “We’ve had ten years to get rusty. We don’t want to look like a couple of fumbling amateurs when we kiss in public for the first time.”
My mouth fell open a little as I tried to determine if he was serious. “Kissing is like riding a bike. We don’t need to practice to get it right.”
The corners of Chase’s eyes creased. “It’s more like riding a unicycle. Once you figure it out, with enough consistency, no problem. But if you go a decade without climbing on that unicycle, you’re starting right back at square one.”
I had to bite the inside of my cheek to keep from laughing. “You’re comparing kissing to a unicycle. You’re just as romantic as I remember.”
Chase treaded closer until my legs were brushing against his with each kick. “Come on. One kiss. Practice makes perfect.” His arms drew in, entombing me in his presence. One brow carved into his forehead. “That is, unless you’re scared to kiss me in private, half-naked in a swimming pool, because you still harbor some kind of feelings for me . . .”
I shoved his chest as a snap reaction, realizing too late that I should not touch him when he was this close, when I was this conflicted. “Fame has really gone to your head.”
His shoulders rose above the water before dipping below again. “So? Prove me wrong.”
“Fine.” The word materialized on its own. “But if you even try slipping me tongue, my knee is winding up in your groin.”
He wet his lips, fighting a smile. “When have I ever complained about any part of you nestling down there?”
My hands balled at my sides as I attempted to approach this whole thing like a science experiment. Objectively. Neutrally. Emotionlessly. “Just kiss me and get it over with.”
His smile quirked. “Once you’re finished whispering sweet nothings into my ear.”
When I tried to push him away, his hands circled my wrists. Chase’s eyes found mine, the color of his irises nearly indistinguishable from his pupils. My chest moved quickly when he swam closer, his head angling as his lips aligned with mine.
He hadn’t even kissed me and I’d lost all sense of direction. Up was as good as down in my present state. His breath fanned across my lips as he waited, perfectly at ease having me trapped in the corner of his pool, our mouths a sliver of air apart.
His grip on my wrists relaxed right before his mouth finally connected with mine. My body froze the instant he kissed me, but it didn’t last long, seeming to melt one piece at a time.
I didn’t realize I was sinking until Chase’s arm cinched around me, pulling my shoulders back above the water, his mouth not missing a beat. The last piece of me to unthaw was my lips, but the moment they did, they matched his urgency. My arms wound behind his neck as I drew closer, our bodies tangling beneath the water as he kissed me in a way I hadn’t been kissed in years; in the kind of way that made a girl feel delicate and invincible at the same time.
Chase treaded water, holding us both above the surface, the planes of his chest rising to meet mine with our uneven breaths. Before I knew it, our tongues were tying together, though it wasn’t him who’d broken that rule first. His chest rumbled against mine as my mouth and hands grew more feverish, no longer under the constraint of my better judgment.
Kissing Chase was exactly as I remembered, yet totally different. The scrape of his calloused fingers against my skin felt the same, yet there was a newfound strength to it. His full lips moved with mine in a dance we’d mastered years ago, but there was a resolve I’d never tasted so deeply before. The way he held me was exactly the same, though the contours of his body had changed.
When my chest was hammering from breathlessness, Chase broke the kiss, managing to evade my ensuing advances. His eyes remained closed for a minute, droplets of water winding down his face from where my hands had been.
When his eyes finally opened, the look in them made my head dizzy, even as I reminded myself this had been a practice kiss. Nothing more.
“How was that?” he asked.
I had to look away in order to make my answer seem convincing. My shoulder lifted out of the water as I shaped my most detached expression. “You were right. Like riding a unicycle.”
“No, you were right.” Chase’s hand drifted up my back, his rough fingertips somehow soft against my skin. “Kissing you is like riding a bicycle.”

Fool Me Once is a sweet second-chance romance with little drama.

I am not usually a huge fan of books that don’t give have a lot of angst or drama to fuel the story but with this one, I thoroughly enjoyed it. And that has everything to do with Nicole’s writing.

Chase and Emma were high school sweethearts before Chase left Emma behind to go after his dreams. Ten years later, he’s back, hoping to clean up his image with the help of his former love.

I really enjoyed how Nicole wrote this story. Nicole just lets everything play out naturally and I love that there is no drama or secret pining between the two of them. You know there was chemistry before and just because he upped an left, doesn’t mean that chemistry died.

Chase holds nothing back from Emma and while Emma tires to stick to the deal they made, you can see that she does struggle with her emotions. I know that Emma wants to protect herself from being hurt again but what I love most is Chase’s determination to win her over.

Overall, another great book from Nicole. Even though is a sweet romance with very little angst, it’s her characters and her writing style that make this story stand out from the rest.

Blurb
They say your first kiss should be earned.

Mine was stolen by a devil in a masquerade mask under the black Chicago sky.

They say the vows you take on your wedding day are sacred.

Mine were broken before we left church.

They say your heart only beats for one man.

Mine split and bled for two rivals who fought for it until the bitter end.

I was promised to Angelo Bandini, the heir to one of the most powerful families in the Chicago Outfit.

Then taken by Senator Wolfe Keaton, who held my father’s sins over his head to force me into marriage.

They say that all great love stories have a happy ending.

I, Francesca Rossi, found myself erasing and rewriting mine until the very last chapter.

One kiss.

Two men.

Three lives.

Entwined together.

And somewhere between these two men, I had to find my forever.

Excerpt
“Are you sure you’re on my card?” I turned to the man with a polite yet distant smile. I was still disoriented from the exchange with Angelo when the stranger pulled me against his hard body and pressed a possessive hand lower than socially acceptable on my back, a second from groping my butt.

“Answer me,” I hissed.

“My bid on your card was the highest,” he replied dryly.

“The bids are undisclosed. You don’t know how much other people have paid,” I kept my lips pursed to keep myself from yelling.

“I know it’s nowhere near the realm of what this dance is worth.”

Un-freaking-believable.

We began to waltz around the room as other couples were not only spinning and mingling but also stealing envious glances at us. Naked, raw ogles that told me that whomever the blonde he’d come to the masquerade with was, she wasn’t his wife. And that I might have been all the rage in The Outfit, but the rude man was in high demand, too.

I was stiff and cold in his arms, but he didn’t seem to notice—or mind. He knew how to waltz better than most men, but he was technical, and lacked warmth and Angelo’s playfulness.

“Nemesis.” He took me by surprise, his rapacious gaze stripping me bare. “Distributing glee and dealing misery. Seems at odds with the submissive girl who entertained Bishop and his horsey wife at the table.”

I choked on my own saliva. Did he just call the governor’s wife horsey? And me submissive? I looked away, ignoring the addictive scent of his cologne, and the way his marble body felt against mine.

“Nemesis is my spirit animal. She was the one to lure Narcissus to a pool where he saw his own reflection and died of vanity. Pride is a terrible illness.” I flashed him a taunting smirk.

“Some of us could use catching it.” He bared his straight white teeth.

“Arrogance is a disease. Compassion is the cure. Most gods didn’t like Nemesis, but that’s because she had a backbone.”

“Do you?” He arched a dark eyebrow.

“Do I…?” I blinked, the courteous grin on my face crumpling. He was even ruder when we were alone.

“Have a backbone,” he provided. He stared at me so boldly and intimately, it felt like he breathed fire into my soul. I wanted to step out of his touch and jump into a pool full of ice.

“Of course, I do,” I responded, my spine stiffening. “What’s with the manners? Were you raised by wild coyotes?”

“Give me an example,” he said, ignoring my quip. I was beginning to draw away from him, but he jerked me back into his arms. The glitzy ballroom distorted into a backdrop, and even though I was starting to notice that the man behind the demi-mask was unusually beautiful, the ugliness of his behavior was the only thing that stood out.

I am a warrior and a lady…and a sane person who can deal with this horrid man.

“I really like Angelo Bandini.” I dropped my voice, slicing my gaze from his eyes and toward the table where Angelo’s family had been seated. My father was sitting a few seats away, staring at us coldly, surrounded by Made Men who chatted away.

“And see, in my family, we have a tradition dating back ten generations. Prior to her wedding, a Rossi bride is to open a wooden chest—carved and made by a witch who lived in my ancestors’ Italian village—and read three notes written to her by the last Rossi girl to marry. It’s kind of a good luck charm mixed with a talisman and a bit of fortunetelling. I stole the chest tonight and opened one of the notes, all so I could rush fate. It said that tonight I was going to be kissed by the love of my life, and well…” I drew my lower lip into my mouth and sucked it, peering under my eyelashes at Angelo’s empty seat. The man stared at me stoically, as though I was a foreign film he couldn’t understand. “I’m going to kiss him tonight.”

“That’s your backbone?”

“When I have an ambition, I go for it.”

A conceited frown crinkled his mask, as if to say I was a complete and utter moron. I looked him straight in the eye. My father taught me that the best way to deal with men like him was to confront, not run. Because, this man? He’d chase.

The Kiss Thief is my first Leigh Shen book – yea, yea – I’ve been living under a rock before now. LOL

TKT is written both POVs from both Francesca and Wolfe, which really helped drive the story. The story was more enjoyable being able to understand things from both sides and both POVs and not just a one-sided story.

Francesca (Nemesis) was raised in very strict and dominating family – nothing she saw wrong with. Her father is the leader of The Outfit and their are traditions in their family that, while they seem dated, are followed impeccably by all.

Senator Wolfe Keaton (Villain) has a hard-on for bringing down Francesca’s father and his business. He is willing to stop at nothing to bring it all down. However, he has a few other things up his sleeve first.

I won’t go into the plot or details of this book because it’s just best to figure it out all on your own. Nemesis and Villain don’t have the best first meeting, nor do the following altercations get any better. However, it’s the back and forth, their banter that keeps thing lively and entertaining.

Shen wrote some very unique characters and added some nice surprises along the way too. I have to admit that the mafia parts of this book were tough for me as I am a huge stickler with the accuracy of mafia stories and keeping everything very realistic in any and all aspects of that world. For me I had to let go and let the author’s imagination go on how things played out in those aspects (because they truly would not play out the way they did); this is where fiction comes in to play and not letting reality get in the way of true fictional story.

The story line and the characters kept me glued to the pages and had me vested in their outcome. Surprisingly, I truly loved Wolfe more than Francesca. She was tad annoying to me with how naïve she was along with the indecisiveness not only in her thoughts, but some of her actions. I understand that she is going to question herself a lot giving the circumstances, but damn. Sometimes that back and forth was a bit ridiculous at times.

As for Wolfe, he surprised me most. The man hides himself very well. He comes across as a lion in all aspects of his life, for good reason. But damn if he did not win me over in the end – even before the end if I must be honest. He might be an overbearing asshole, but he has his reasons.

Overall, I truly enjoyed this story and the characters. I know from above it doesn’t sound like it, but I truly did. Those were the only two things that bothered me, but it did not deter from me reading or continuing on with the story. And those things did not hurt the majority of the story.

The Kiss Thief is one I would still highly recommend to others and has made me want to go and read more of Shen’s writing.

The Secret To Dating Your Best Friend’s Sister by Meghan Quinn…Release Day Blitz & Review

How do you date your best friend’s sister? Easy.

Step one: Pretend you want her to set you up with someone else. That will bring the two of you closer.

Step two: Go on date with lots of random women, proceed to get stupid drunk and talk about your best friend’s sister, thus gaining the courage to finally make a move.

Step three: Randomly show up at her apartment and confess your love. Women love that, right?

It all seemed so simple. A fool-proof three step process that will guarantee the love of you life to fall madly in love with you.

At least–that’s what I thought was going to happen. But my attempts to win over Julia Westin backfired in more ways than I can count. The thing about Julia? She’s smart–really smart–and her wicked gaze cuts through all the charm I’ve tried slinging her way. She’s not interested in games, my gifts, or my stories. She might want me too; but she’s not giving in that easy…

Meghan Quinn has the romcom genre nailed down very well. Each book has it’s perfect blend of romance, humor and even a touch of angst and this book is no different.

The Secret to Dating Your Best Friend’s Sister (yea, super long title) stars Bram and Julia. They’ve known each other since Bram and Rath became inseparable in college and Julia started attending the same college a few years later. However, don’t for a second this story is like any other in the “dating your best friend’s sibling.”

I really enjoyed how Meghan wrote this story. It takes place when they’re older and settled in their lives. Julia runs an amazing business and Bram is an extremely successful business owner.

Bram is one book boyfriend every reader will love- he’s impossible not to. Julia will be a tad tougher for readers to grab onto but she eventually wind you over.

I loved the interactions not just between Julia and Bram but also with Rath, Roark and Clarissa. The secondary characters added another layer to the story without taking anything away.

Overall, another hit for Meghan Quinn. I’m excited to see if writes any other books starring the other characters.

Jock Rule by Sara Ney…Blog Review

Kip Carmichael is no pretty boy.

He’s a rough. Dirty. Giant. Hair so unruly, and a beard so thick, his friends on the team call him Sasquatch.

The first time Sasquatch lays eyes on Theodora “Teddy” Johnson across the keg at a party one night on Jock Row, she’d been relegated to the sidelines by her jock hungry “friends.”

Week-after-week, he watches beautiful but bashful Teddy getting overshadowed, and overlooked. Sasquatch finally broad shoulders his way through the crowd, offering to to be her hairy godmother. But the minute their eyes meet? He’s a goner.

Teaching her the RULES for winning a jock will be the easy part. Not falling in love with her is going to be a losing game.

Jock Rule is the second book in Sara’s Jock Hard series but can be read as a complete standalone.

I read this one much quicker than I anticipated. I really enjoyed both Kip and Teddy – these two characters were very unique and entertaining to read about.

Kip is rugby player and graduating soon so he’s focused on that and nothing else, aside from rugby. Teddy is one of the girls who sort of blends in wherever she is – not really outgoing and keeps to herself, but doesn’t stay locked in her dorm room. They both meet a rugby party and things strangely take off from there.

I won’t go into much more detail because the book is fairly short (for me) and really, if I give anymore details away, I will be surmising the book and that’s just not fun in reviews.

As fast I read this book and enjoyed it, I really do wish it was longer. The beginning of the book started out perfectly and moved at the rate pace. Then somewhere near the 3/4 mark, things moved ahead at a much faster pace, leaving out what I felt would be important details to the story overall.

I enjoyed that book overall and would definitely recommend it to someone who enjoys NA/YA reads.

Across The Horizon by Aly Martinez…Release Day Blitz & Review

“Sometimes love happens when you least expect it.” That was what my husband’s mistress told me the day I found out about their affair.

I didn’t believe it until five minutes later when mouth-watering celebrity chef Tanner Reese walked up, tossed his arm around my shoulders, and told my cheating husband to take a hike.

Tanner and I couldn’t have been more different. He spent his weekends at clubs, rubbing elbows with fellow A-listers. I spent mine in yoga pants with cheese boards and a glass of wine—or six.

Our relationship shouldn’t have worked, but it did. That is until Tanner proved to me that even though love happens when you least expect it…

So does heartbreak.

I shifted the phone to my other ear and asked her, “Did you just get in bed?”

“If, by bed, you mean carrying a glass of wine out back to swing in the hammock, maybe.”

I bit my bottom lip, my head falling back against the headrest. For most men, this would have been an innocuous statement. But for a hammock connoisseur like myself, this was the normal guy equivalent of her saying that she liked to give blowjobs during halftime.

“You have a hammock out back?”

There was a delay in her response, which was followed by a subtle kiss of her lips on what I assumed was a wine glass. “Don’t knock it until you try it. It’s one of the most underrated luxuries in outdoor furniture.”

“Oh, I’m not knocking anything. Rope or quilted?”

“Mayan, actually.”

“Oh, sweet heavenly baby Jesus, she’s beautiful and knows her hammocks. I’ve never been so turned on in my life.”

She giggled, pausing for another sip. “You know, if you leaked this hammock fetish to the press, you could probably increase demand by five million percent and singlehandedly lower the country’s unemployment rate.”

Okay, so at some point during the day, she’d figured out who I was.

But! Even with this knowledge, she was trying to avoid a date with me and was not elbow-deep in planning our televised wedding. This was a definite plus in my book.

“Yeah, but then, when I talked to beautiful women like yourself, I’d have no idea if the hammock was your idea or a ploy to impress me.”

“Jeez, that’s sad, Tanner,” she said, her sweet Southern accent like a wave rolling over my name.

I’d meant it as a joke, but it was the absolute truth when it came to dating. Early on in my career, I’d done a rapid-fire interview about my personal life. One of the questions had been: What would your ideal woman order on the first date? Truth be told, the only thing I hoped my ideal woman would order was something she wanted. I didn’t factor into that. But I’d been on my last question in my last interview of the last day of a month-long press tour. My face had hurt from fake smiling, I’d been in desperate need of a shower, a smoke, and sleep, and my mind had been mush, so I’d prattled off the first thing that had come to mind: shrimp and grits.

That one little answer somehow made it onto my Wiki page, and after that, every woman I’d taken out ordered shrimp and grits. One of them even had a shellfish allergy and nearly ended up in the hospital. And this insanity was not limited to women outside of the spotlight.

I’d once gone on a date with America’s princess of pop, Levee Williams. We’d hit it off at a charity event. For one of the most famous women in the world, she was a surprisingly nice girl, gorgeous, and funny as all get out. But the first time I took her out? One guess what she ordered.

I was at the end of my rope with dating and lost my freaking mind before storming out like an asshole. That night, as I was reporting shrimp and fucking grits as an error to Wiki, I noticed that her page listed it as her favorite food. I’d never had the balls to contact her again, and I once hid behind a palm tree on Rodeo Drive when I heard the clamoring of paparazzi calling her name. But that’s neither here nor there.

In short, while finding a woman was all too easy, dating was hard.

But that wasn’t about to stop me from trying with Rita.

Tanner finally gets his book! WOOOHOOO!! And Aly delivered one hell of a story.

Tanner Reese – brother of Porter Reese from The Darkest Sunrise duet. Tanner’s a chef but has seem to find his niche on a food show instead of doing his life passion, working in a kitchen. He’s also stepping away from women and relationships while he deals with this crazy ex and her whacked-out accusations.

Rita is Charlotte’s (from Darkest Sunrise duet) best friend and also trying to host her annual carnival (enter Porter and Tanner to the rescue). Rita is in the midst of a messy divorce from her cheating ex, who just so happens to the boss at her job. But he refuses to let her go so quickly.

Tanner meets Rita at a carnival where he volunteered to cook while she was hashing it out with her cheating husband. Yea – fireworks all around. Tanner and Rita may not seem like the best match, but they just fit together.

Aly delivers one hell of a story. The interactions between Tanner and Rita are so natural. These two just hit off it so well. The timing may be shit, but you can’t fight love. Everything played out naturally and I love that neither just gave up or gave in too easily. Aly stayed true to these characters and their mannerisms – never changing anything.

I am not normally a fan of insta-love relationships, but Aly definitely sold me on this one. I loved everything about how they met, how things transpired and how it all ended. Perfection!

Originally from Savannah, Georgia, USA Today bestselling author Aly Martinez now lives in South Carolina with her four young children.

All of Me by A.L. Jackson…Release Blitz & Review

⋆Sexy Attorney
⋆Forbidden Romance
⋆The one woman who will make him question everything
DETAILS:
TITLE: ALL OF ME
SERIES: A Confessions of the Heart Stand-Alone Novel
RELEASE DATE: December 3rd, 2018

People call me callous. Arrogant. Ruthless.

I call myself tenacious.

One of the most powerful attorneys in Charleston, I don’t let anyone or anything stand in my way.

Until a chance encounter changes everything.

One glance.

One touch.

One night.

It only leaves me wanting more.

But Grace is off limits. Most people would even say forbidden.

Everyone knows an attorney can’t sleep with his client.

Too bad I already did.

And even with the threat of losing everything, I don’t know if I can stop myself from having her again…

All of Me – a Confessions of the Heart forbidden, stand-alone romance

All of Me is what A.L. Jackson does best – sucks you in to her stories and never lets you go.

We first met Ian in More Of You and you just knew that there was so much more to this man. (You do not need to More of You to read this story as it is a complete stand alone).

Ian has this dark aura around him – he is a man with sinful secrets that derived from a dark past. He is who he is today because of the choices and decisions he chose to make over the years. The successful lawyer who will stop at nothing to rise to the top.

Grace is running from her “picture-perfect” life. A life she never realized she was getting into until it was too late. An unexpected meeting at a business gala between Ian and Grace is what sets off the chemistry between them. And Ian isn’t the only one with dark secrets haunting him.

I won’t say anything more on the plot. Ian’s past may haunt him but it’s Grace’s compassion, fierce loyalty and devotion to those who loves that eats away at Ian’s walls. My biggest issue was the quick romance between Ian and Grace. While it seems as though their relationship develops over time (kudos to Amy for having to feel longer than it really is), the time they spent truly spent together was only a few days, it’s always hard to prove love versus lust for me. But because Amy does such a great job of making it seem longer, it was easy to forget as you read.

Amy gave us her perfect blend of romance with a not so light story and some amazing characters that you will fall in love with. I cannot wait for her to give us Mack’s story. I am very interested to see what happens there.

Bearded Lumberjack in Hat holding a big Axe on Shoulder

Review

Next In Line is the 2nd book in Amy’s Wait With Me series. They can all be read as standalones so feel free to read this one and then go back to the first one.

I love Amy and her writing style. I feel like she is my long lost sister with her puns and quirky personality. It shows in her writing and that’s what makes me love her books so much – they feel natural and real.

Next In Line is Maggie and Sam’s story. While it did start off a bit slow for me, I knew what to expect from Amy so I continued on and it didn’t take long for the story to take hold of me and never let go.

Maggie and Sam are complete opposites in just about every way. Yet when they are getting to know one another, they seem to pull these hidden treasures from one another and open each other’s eyes to new ideas.

For some, I know that Amy’s writing will seem to punny (is that a word??) but it works for Amy and her characters. I feel that the stories just wouldn’t be as delightful and enjoyable if she changed any of that. I truly love all the puns and wittiness added in – it helps give the story itself more character.

Amy Daws – you have done it again; given us more characters to love, a story to believe in and have us loving you even more. I can’t wait for what you bring us next.

Oh and the acknowledgements gutted me. For those who don’t read them – read this one. It’s a tear-jerker (for me anyway) but so beautiful.

excerpt“Maggie,” I state, my voice deep in warning. “Stop worrying about Sterling and live in this moment. We are in the middle of a hot spring, surrounded by rocks and mountains and snow and nature and…life. Your ex should be the last thing on your mind. You should be taking this all in.”

“I am taking it all in,” she snaps back defensively.

“But are you? Are you really?” I stare deep into her eyes, not in judgment but in understanding. “I know you have a plan, but sometimes plans need to be forgotten so you don’t miss out on life.”

“Life? Like right now? With you?” she says the words slowly like each one is a sweet she’s tasting for the first time.

“Hell, maybe,” I reply, my voice growing deeper from the darkened look in her eye. “You seem busy living for a fictional future. Maybe it’s time to stop turning the pages for a bit.”

The corners of her lips twitch as she watches me for a breath. Her tongue darts out to wet her lips as she pulls her bottom one in with her teeth. She turns around to prop her arms on the rocks, her eyes taking in the scenery all around us. She exhales heavily and then turns to sit on her knees in front of me.

My eyes take in that luscious body of hers, curvy in all the right places and smooth like velvet. Leaning in until her face is only inches from mine, she says, “Kiss me, Sam.”

“What?” I ask with a laugh and pull away from her, assuming this must be her idea of a joke.

She bites her lip and narrows her eyes with determination. “Kiss me.”

“What are you doing?” I shift nervously in the water to put more space between us. I swear to God, the temperature of the water has just risen ten degrees.

Lifting her shoulders, she replies, “I’m living life in the moment.”

“But you want your ex back.” A fact she shouldn’t need to be reminded of.

“I do…someday.” Her eyes wander down to my chest. “But he’s not here tonight. And you’re a short-term kind of guy, and I’m a temporarily single girl. So why don’t we live in the moment right now…together?”

“You don’t want this,” I reply with a shake of the head, gulping down the contents of my glass in one swig. I set it down and hoist myself up on the edge of the rocks, needing some cool air to clear my head.

“I think I do,” she replies, lifting her brows at me. “I know I do. I’ve wanted it since the day we met.”

“Bullshit.”

“It’s true. Why do you think I threw myself at you in your fishing hut, Sam?”

My body roars to life at that memory, of her body close to mine, of feeling her in my arms and tasting her perfect lips. Maggie could kiss. Even in her haste, she knew how to kiss.

Maggie moves closer to me like a tentative cub tracking its first prey. She kneels between my legs, and I tense when she runs her hands up the outside of my calves. “You’re a good guy, Sam. You may not be a long-term kind of guy, but that’s not what I’m looking for from you anyway.”

Her hands roll over my quads, shooting a zinger right up my groin to my cock. I reach down and grip her hands harshly to stop their movement. “What are you looking for exactly, Maggie? Be very fucking specific.”

Her long black lashes are wet from the steam as she looks up at me and quirks her brow as she replies. “I’m asking for no-strings fucking.”

“Jesus Christ,” I growl and have to force myself to look away from her. She looks way too fucking hot right now in that little black bikini, her breasts pressing together from the position of her hands on my thighs, and her blue eyes wide and innocent. My dick develops its own heartbeat as it presses into my board shorts.

How did this evening turn into Maggie seducing me? I’m fucking nine years older than her, for God’s sake. I should be the one seducing her. But all of a sudden, she’s the alluring bait dangling right in front of me, and I’m a fish who hasn’t eaten in weeks.

I look at her with pleading eyes. “Your brother will kill me.”

She smiles a sexy smile, that dimple in her cheek ever present. “Miles doesn’t need to know about my sex life.”

Cash is part of Cassia’s Power Play series, which is new to me. I can honestly say that you do not read any of the other books to read this one – I truly had not realized it was part of a series (paid no attention when I added it on Goodreads). I am now curious about the other books and will have to go back and read those.

The blurb for Cash pretty much sums up the story line for this book, but the book is more than just that. It sounds like your typical billionaire needing help out of situation they put themselves into and the aid coming from someone who’s been down on luck because of a shitty decisions someone else made. However, with Cash, it’s not just the story of how these two comes to the terms of the agreement but how it all pans out in the end.

I enjoyed watching Cash and Kara try to keep things platonic and only surface level deep. I never truly connected to either character, but for once, that did not hurt the story for me. I still enjoyed their antics and how these two drift into more than just the arrangement they agreed upon.

Both characters stayed true to themselves and Cassia never made them change just because they entered each other lives. The story flowed beautifully and Cassia gave us just the right amount of romance and angst. I think what I truly enjoyed the most about this story was the simplicity of their relationship – not that their story is a common one, but how it all plays out wasn’t too overdramatized and just simple.

I won’t lie and say that with Cassia’s books, they have been hit or miss with me. But I will always give each of her books a try just because I never know what I am going to get from her stories. And with this book, I really enjoyed it.

Cash was a very fast and enjoyable read – one I would definitely recommend.

Book Blurb:

Love is weakness.

Which is why Annabelle Mills vowed a long time ago to never let it destruct her. A former pageant queen with a bite equally as lethal as her bark, she’s interning at her dream job on the set of the highest-rated home design show on television. Everything in Annabelle’s life, though it may be cold and isolated, is going exactly as she always planned.

Until her ex-high school sweetheart moves to town. The same boy that she cheated on, once upon a time, essentially breaking both of their hearts. But no one knows the full story, and being vulnerable enough to open up about it is not on Annabelle’s checklist.

Hate is fuel.

The kind that courses through Boone Graham’s veins and allows him to shut out everyone around him. As the hottest rookie on Austin’s professional baseball team, he should be spending his days hitting homeruns and signing jerseys. Except he’s seen dreams ripped right out from under those closest to him, leaving them with nothing.

Without a college degree, he’ll never take the risk of pursuing his real dream. But when he runs into the girl who took a mallet to his heart and stopped it beating, attending the same university might just be the biggest challenge he’s faced yet.

As the semester unfolds, the line between love and hate is blurred. And with the amount of baggage stacked between them, together is the last thing they want to be.

That’s the thing about hearts, though. They develop plans all on their own.

EXCERPT:

Boone

I only have an hour in between my workout and the film session that the hitting coaches want us to attend.

My entire schedule since moving to Austin has been busy as hell and completely out of whack. Between getting my class schedule figured out, sprinting across campus to get to the buildings, dealing with my moving company, figuring out where to park my car in front of my building, practicing with the Triple-A affiliate team I was drafted to and everything in between … I’m fucking wiped.

I’ve been scouted for the major leagues since my sophomore year of high school, so I thought I’d been semi-prepared for what was to come, but my mind feels like it has been put in a blender for the last two weeks. I had so not been prepared. It was as if I was hobbling around in the dark in my new reality, trying to grasp at things before they moved on me.

I needed to get it the fuck together. I am a professional now and having a career as a professional baseball player would only get harder from here.

From the few times I’d visited Austin for tournaments or the odd family trip, I remember we’d gone to Big Cheese’s Grill. They boasted the best burgers in town, and it was close enough to campus that the place was always packed with students and professors alike.

I open the door to the restaurant while glancing at my iWatch to check the calories versus fat burned during my workout.

And I slam right into a body.

I bounce back, shocked at the person who just rammed into me. I fumble to hold on to them, to keep our gravity from sending both of us flying. I fail, and the body falls backward, the door slamming into my back. I absorb that blow and keep upright, thank God, or I would have been sprawled flat on top of whoever just plowed into me.

“Seriously?! Watch where you’re going!” An angry, high-pitched tone fills my ears.

My head is down, trying to collect its scrambled thoughts, as I reach for whoever I just knocked to the ground. “I’m so sorry, I didn’t realize you were coming out—”

The air and words leave me as I pull her up. Her hand is still in mine as we stand face-to-face, my surprise mirrored back at me. Those lips, the lashes, the eyes a rich, deep, soul-searching brown. The freckles across the bridge of her nose that make her look more innocent than she actually is.

A current of tension radiates back and forth between our interlocked hands, and I can smell the glass of wine she must have just drunk on her breath. It’s sweet with a bite of alcohol, and my mouth waters for a drink. I haven’t thirsted for alcohol in five years, yet in one chance meeting, Annabelle has me reaching for a bottle. She’s poison to me, makes me want to do crazy things. I drop her hand as the thought crosses my mind, as if she’s burned me.

“You should really watch where you’re going. Or did you knock me down on purpose?” Annabelle sniffs.

I scoff, “Right, I often go around pushing women to the ground on purpose. I see the cold hard ice hasn’t melted off your personality, Annabelle.”

And a woman she is. So much more grown up than I remembered her. She’d always been beautiful but gone was the gangliness of teenage years. This is a woman who stands in front of me, curves abound and an unseen knowledge of the world to match. I couldn’t help but get that jab in there.

“And I see you’re just as focused on yourself as ever. You never did care what anyone else was doing, did you, Boone?” She folds her arms over her chest and my eyes stray to her boobs in a sizzle of heat between us.

We’re like a bunch of children fighting like cats and dogs out in the street. How can she still pull out every insecure and immature trait within me? My brain is moving seconds slower than it usually does, and I know I’m standing here staring too long. Even though I hate Annabelle Mills, I can’t help but memorize every detail about her for the first time I’ve seen her in about five years.

“Move.” Annabelle pushes past me, not using any manners, and starts to stalk down the sidewalk.

Talk about rude. She’d always been aggressive, harsh, and just a little bit more high-maintenance than any of the other girls. It’s what had drawn me to her. And then seeing those glimpses of vulnerability, that’s what had made me stay. It was addicting feeling like you were the only one who got to see the nice side of the mean girl.

I should walk into the restaurant. I should pick up my to-go order and drive back to my apartment where I’ll eat a quick lunch and change and go to the practice facility.

But a flash of Annabelle in the bar the other night dances through my head. And her callous words just now piss me off even more.

She always did have the perfect way of getting under my skin and driving me wild. When I’m around her, I forget who I am. I turn into some raging bull, with a fuse shorter than the bombs Itchy and Scratchy use on each other.

The stupidest thing I could do right now? Stomp after her, yelling, in the middle of a crowded downtown street.

So that’s exactly what I do.

“You really haven’t changed a bit!” Oh, fuck. What am I doing?

Annabelle rolls around, her eyes sparking with rage. “Nope, still the same cold, heartless bitch you dumped.”

“Yeah, like I said, I can see that.” Lord, my mama would be so disappointed in me agreeing with a woman that she was a bitch.

“Well, no one said you had to be around it. You’re the one who moved to my city. You’re welcome to leave.” She waves around like I should just get out of here.

I fist my hands in my hair. Christ, she’s so aggravating. “No can do, I’m getting paid to be here.”

She rolls her eyes. “Like I’m not? Have you watched TV lately? Or did you take one too many fly balls to the head? I know there weren’t a lot of brain cells in there to start.”

Fuck her. Now it’s time to really piss her off, get under her skin like she’s under mine. “Oh, you mean that show you play house on or whatever? They’ll get bored of you when the next eye-candy pageant queen comes along.”

I swear Annabelle could spit nails at me if she willed it right now. “You’re an asshole, Boone Graham. You’ve only ever cared about yourself and where you want to be. It was silly of me to think you’d ever think of someone but yourself.”

I drop the anvil. “Says the girl who cheated on me. Who lost her virginity to another guy.”

People around us are starting to stare, to really look at the two people arguing openly on the street. It’s not a good idea for me to stick around any longer; people know who I am on a national level and being seen fighting with a girl, who someone will inevitably social media stalk and find out is my ex, is not good publicity.

Except I can’t stop staring into Annabelle’s eyes. They are furious, yes, but there is something more there. I’ve really … hurt her. I’m shocked, to be honest. I didn’t think I could remotely hurt this girl, who self-identifies as a cold, heartless bitch.

But there it is. The raw flash, miss-it-if-you-blink second of real pain that flickers through those mocha pools. I open my mouth to say something, to take it back, maybe apologize, but she speaks first.

“You have no idea.”

Her tone pulls at my heartstrings, it’s low and somber. And then she melts into the crowd, giving no explanation of what I have no idea about.

“We love each other more than we annoy each other. We love each other more than our mistakes.”

That quote pretty much sums up Boone and Annabelle’s relationship.

You’re the One I Don’t Want is a standalone contemporary (side of sports) romance novel with snippets from characters in her book, The Tenth Girl.

I have to admit that I found Annabelle to be a bit annoying and a drama queen, but I liked that Carrie explained Annabelle’s actions throughout the book. It didn’t take away from her nastiness, but explained a bit more as to why she did things and helped you understand her a bit more.

Boone is a damn saint – that is all I am saying. The attraction/bond/pull he felt towards Annabelle had to be extremely strong for him to overlook the shit she does. He definitely does not make it easier for her, but he’s got the patience of a saint and the drive of a determined man.

The way Carrie plays out this entire book seemed a bit slow for me. There were times I found myself getting antsy to see where this would go. I think part of it was Annabelle annoyed me and I just wanted someone to slap her. LOL However, I stuck with this book because I do enjoy Carrie’s writing and wanted to see how it all played out in the end.

Overall, it’s a sugary-sweet read with a southern touch. There is very little angst but lots of drama, but that has to do with Annabelle and her being a drama-llama. I have to admit, as much as she annoyed me, her character is what keeps this story entertaining. If the character was any other way, this story line wouldn’t work and the book wouldn’t be as interesting.
