my-review

I was asked to review this book and after reading the blurb I was sent, I was hooked.  It’s an adaption of Charles Dicken’s Oliver Twist with today’s modern flare.  It’s truly quite an interesting book.

Olivia Twisted is told in both Z and Liv’s POVs.  They both are foster kids, but Z is living a slightly better life due to the “home” he now lives in.  It’s not Liv is living with horrible foster parents now, it’s just that Z seems to be doing quite well for himself  – enough that he’s able to afford a Ducati.  Yea, crazy for a foster kid.

Anyway – I enjoyed the plot and how Vivi built this story up.  It’s a slow build and shows what these characters thinking as things progress.  Liv is dubbed as naïve by Z but I think she’s anything but naïve – she’s curious enough to question everything that goes on.

I was a little let down when it came to the big build up and what was planned for Liv, the overall book was really good.  I was hooked from start to finish and the pace kept me glued to the pages.

I look forward to reading the next book, Olivia Decoded. Especially since this one didn’t really end on a cliffhanger.

my-review

Olivia Decoded takes place about 8 months after Olivia Twisted ended.  And yes, you should read Olivia Twisted before reading this to get a good background on all the characters and what happened to get them to this point.

This book isn’t so much about the hacking and computer stuff as the first book.  It’s more about the mystery behind Liv’s stalker and how it all ties her and Z/Jack together.  Yes, there is talks about hacking going on, but it’s not the focus of the book.

I enjoyed how Vivi played everything out.  I was truly surprised by the twist of events and hwo things went down.  I honestly didn’t see that coming.  However, my biggest gripe is the time frame in which things happen.  For instance, on a particular day there visiting a school that is letting out and then what should be hours later, a text is received stating they’ll be at school by 3.  See -things just not working out in the timeline for me.  But that’s my only gripe and for some I know that will irk a lot more than it did me.

Overall, the story was very interesting and flowed well (aside from the timeline issues).  I was kept interested in the story and definitely needed to know who was behind everything.

“Wow, who gave you that?”

“My grandfather. He left it on my car seat this morning.”

“Oh, boo. I thought maybe you had a secret admirer or something.” I try not to smile at her obvious disappointment. Emerson’s been on me to date for months now. She knows I had someone back in Richmond who was special, but only that we broke it off before I moved here. She doesn’t know anything else about Jack. No one does, because what would I say? The last guy I dated is a criminal, and the last time I saw him was right after we got kidnapped by his horrible boss and almost died trying to escape. That’d go over really well.

“I don’t know, what do you think?” Emerson breaks into my thoughts as we walk down the hallway to our lockers.

“About what?”

She sighs. “Where Kade’s taking me tonight. Girl, you are not with it today, are you? Are you doing anything tonight?”

“My grandfather’s taking me to dinner.”

“Sweet. Not so romantic, but sweet.”

I smile. “Yes, he’s sweet. But a little over the top on gifts sometimes.” Even after eight months of living the wealthy life, I’d be happier if he gave me a gift card to a bookstore instead of extravagant jewelry I rarely wear.

My phone starts buzzing, and I pull it from my pocket. Grandfather’s text reads: What gift?

I frown, typing, The bracelet you left in my car. I snap a quick picture of the bracelet on my wrist and send it to him. Maybe his text was a hint to send a picture, though I doubt it. He’s usually pretty direct about things.

“What’s up?” Emerson asks.

“Looks like Grandfather forgot he left me the bracelet.” But even as I say it, it doesn’t sound right. He’s one of the sharpest people I’ve ever known, and he runs a financial institution.

“Maybe he gave it to one of his staff to put in your car.” Her voice has the usual bitter tone whenever she’s thinking of her parents. They’re hardly ever around, and when they are, they don’t pay much attention to her.

“Yeah, you’re probably right.” I don’t believe that, though. Even though it’s possible Mrs. Bedwin did put it there, I doubt it. Grandfather is the type to handle things himself when it comes to me. But Emerson’s parents travel so much for their business that they often let their staff handle things like birthdays and other events they think aren’t important. So as grateful as I am that Grandfather’s always there for me, I don’t like to rub that in Emerson’s face.

“Maybe you really do have a secret admirer,” she says hopefully.

I roll my eyes.“I doubt that.”

“Oh, really?” She stops in her tracks, her eyes fixed straight ahead. I follow her gaze, a sharp sense of dread creeping down my spine. A white rose is dangling from the vent in my locker.

A rose I know wasn’t placed there by my grandfather.

Excerpt:
There are a few things that will never change, despite everything else that has.
When I call, my sister will come.
Always.
It is the unshakable truth that my entire world is built on, from my first memories to this day. So when I piece it together, I don’t think.
I slide my phone out, even in the hospital room while Iris murmurs at her brother and Heath eyes me like I might break her.
Stupid boy. I already have.
I text her and slide the phone away. I don’t need to watch to know she’ll answer, any more than I need the answer to know she’ll be at my apartment when we return.
This is Artemis, who has made a life of taking care of me and worrying about me.
I listen to Heath and Lily talk around Iris, listen to her increasingly fragmented babble, and when Heath sends Lily a confused look, I intervene. Catch her hand and let a thin trickle of power seep from me to her. “We had a very long day, and she didn’t sleep well. I think I should probably take her home and let her get some rest. Do you mind?”
Heath does. I can tell, the way he’s bristling but Iris slumps into me and yawns, impressively, backing up every lie I’m spinning.
“I’ll be back tomorrow, ok? You just. You rest. I’ll be back tomorrow.”
She’s still looking over her shoulder when I pull her from the room.
Her eyes are wide and serious when we duck into a stairwell. “What happened to him?” she asks. Staring at me like I might give her answers. Like she has the right to demand answers from me.
Smart girl.
I tuck her hair back, behind her ears and ignore the low growl of warning it earns me. “If I promise to tell you when we reach my apartment. Will you trust me a little bit longer, sweetheart?”
Her eyes narrow. “Last time we got to your apartment, you and I didn’t do much in the way of talking.”
I grin at that. Because. Fair point.

In Distress by Caethes Faron…Review

in-distress-cover-art

Book Synopsis:

Goodreads M/M Romance Member’s Choice Award Nominee 2014 Best Sci-Fi

After the Great Destruction decimated the world, science is the new god. Geneticists rule, instituting a DNA-based caste system in their effort to restore the human genome.

As a Zed, Will’s a virtual slave who isn’t allowed medical care. A tragic accident has left him crippled, awaiting death. Just before his time is up, Malcolm, an enigmatic Alpha with two differently colored eyes, sweeps in and buys him. Will becomes part of a family of freaks–other damaged Zeds who should be dead. Life seems ideal until Malcolm makes a request that could change Will’s life.

Malcolm harbors more secrets than his Zeds could imagine. His attraction to Will unravels his carefully cultivated control, and one secret escapes: he craves pain, not just as a sexual release, but as a way to atone for his past. Will may be the one person who can give him what he needs if Malcolm can only allow him into his heart.

As they struggle to build trust, each secret Malcolm reveals threatens their relationship. In the end, their desire for each other may heal both men if they can unlearn the lessons of the past.

In Distress is a dystopian, science-fiction love story and contains adult language and situations.

 my-review

A gripping tale of friendship, family, love, and loyalty mixed with mystery that will keep you on the edge of your seat and sexual tension that will leave you filled with desire.

Geneticists are ruling the country and have adopted the caste system from the middle ages. This is their way of preserving mankind and creating a better, stronger, and smarter race in the future. In this dystopian world, where Alphas are of the most esteemed of people, there is one that stands out from the rest. Malcom takes in Zeds (the lowest class) that are broken, those that will be destroyed when they no longer have a use. Will has a deep-rooted hatred for all Alphas since his life has been littered with these overly cruel and brutally sadistic individuals.

Will is very weary of Malcom, but when he gets to Malcom’s house, he quickly learns that he has nothing to fear. It’s at Malcom’s house where he has his first glimpse at family, friendship, and companionship. And it’s in Malcom’s bed where he has his first chance of searing, red-hot desire and deep, penetrating love.

Will this love be enough to keep them together after Will finds out about Malcom’s hidden agenda?

Because. Fair point.

A Promise of Fire (Kingmaker Chronicles #1) by Amanda Bouchet…Review

pof

Synopsis:

Catalia “Cat” Fisa is a powerful clairvoyant known as the Kingmaker. This smart-mouthed soothsayer has no interest in her powers and would much rather fly under the radar, far from the clutches of her homicidal mother. But when an ambitious warlord captures her, she may not have a choice…

Griffin is intent on bringing peace to his newly conquered realm in the magic-deprived south. When he discovers Cat is the Kingmaker, he abducts her. But Cat will do everything in her power to avoid her dangerous destiny and battle her captor at every turn. Although up for the battle, Griffin would prefer for Cat to help his people willingly, and he’s ready to do whatever it takes to coax her…even if that means falling in love with her.

My Review:

Well, to say I enjoyed this book would be a wild understatement. I loved it. LOVED it.

A Promise of Fire is the debut book from Amanda Bouchet and the first in a trilogy. It’s a high fantasy romance that will keep you turning pages well into the night. It’s a little bit Game of Thrones, a little bit Percy Jackson, and a whole lot of sexual tension. And I mean, right from the time Cat and Griffin meet. At the circus, no less. But don’t worry—no creepy clowns!

Startled, I tilt my head back and find him looking down at me, his thundercloud eyes shaded by thick, dark lashes. His eyes flare a heated silver, something shockingly possessive roaring to life in his hooded gaze.

Heat sizzles through me, coiling deep in my belly. My lips part on a silent gasp, and his eyes drop to my mouth. Stark hunger hardens his striking features, and an unexpected thrill skims down my spine. The low sound that rumbles out of him is raw, primal, and utterly male. He looks ready to slam his mouth down on mine.

The sexual tension is ramped up until you’re begging the pages to give you what you want. You’ll love Cat. And Griffin. And all the members of his team. Together they’re like a wisecracking, always-have-each-other’s-backs, Dungeons & Dragons version of The Avengers.

I can’t recommend this book enough. I have a digital version and I’ll be buying two physical copies—one for the keeper shelf and one to loan out to everyone I come in contact with.

BROKEN GOD Blurb:

Power is a strange and broken thing.

He was the sun god, the god of healing and song.

And prophecy.

Apollo has lived alone for centuries, content to spin out the years wandering a new and strange world, lost in the past and endless versions of the future. He has cut all ties with the remains of Olympus and his power, and hidden himself in humanity.

His twin thinks he’s depressed, spending his time in coffee shops, hospital waiting rooms, and concert halls…and nothing matters. Not really.

Until her.

Iris. With her teasing mouth and soulful music and eyes that remind him of the past.

He can’t resist her smile.

A girl as wild as he was, once, with a poet’s tongue and the body of a siren, who for one night makes him forget all the years and everything he gave up.

And he can’t stop fate.

Gods knows he’s tried.

He can’t help taking her.

Even if he knows better.

When Iris wakes up screaming, caught up in visions of the future, Apollo realizes that he didn’t leave his power quite as far behind as he thought.

He’s the god of prophecy and he’s been running from it, for centuries.

Iris is everything he has to avoid.

Now he has a furious Oracle on his hands, his sister trying to fix him, and someone is killing the gods.

It’s not just his tenuous sanity that hangs in the balance this time.

It’s all of Olympus.

Godhood really wasn’t supposed to be this hard.

——————-
A Note From N:
A few months ago, a friend tagged me in a writing prompt. The word was Apollo and the 500 word short story inspired this book. The Greek pantheon has always been a favorite of mine, and slipping back into that world was intoxicating. I couldn’t shake my slightly crazy Apollo who liked coffee and lived a little too mortal for a god.
So I wrote this book, even though I shouldn’t. Because I couldn’t not. Because I loved it and I needed to write something that wrapped me up and consumed me.
And this was it.
I hope you give my crazy god a chance and I hope you love him as much as I do.

Excerpt:

I spend a lot of time walking.
Artie says its in my nature. That I will eternally chase the sun. But then, my twin is a bit annoying. I just like to walk.
Back when the world was young and I was young, I rode the winds and sunbeams, and when that got old, I walked.
I met Del there. On a dusty road outside what would one day become an empire’s capitol, and then turn to dust.
I met many people on the road, over the years.
But that doesn’t matter.
Today matters.
Artie says I spend more time in my head than I do in reality, and that’s part of my problem.
I think reality is a little bit fucked up when you’re an immortal god, but I’ve long since stopped arguing with her.
I wake before the sun rises. Always. Slip into a pair of scuffed up jeans and loose flipflops that look like they’ll fall apart but that fit like a second skin. I wiggle my toes around and tug on a black tshirt and a beanie over my long hair, and then I push out into the darkness.
I live in the center of the city, in a shitty walkup apartment over a Korean takeout place. It’s dirty and needs to be ripped down and rebuilt, and the lights in the hallway don’t work—neither does the deadbolt.
But it does the job, and it’s close to three of my favorite coffee shop and a little bar that has the best indie bands on the weekends. Sometimes, when I leave the windows open, I can hear the music from my bed, and I don’t even have to leave the apartment to get my fix.
But now, the sun is rising and with it, me.
There’s a spot, a few miles from my place, that I can go. Climb to the top of the ten story building and sit on the edge of the roof, my feet dangling into nothing. It’s not the tallest building—there are others that obscure my vision, but there’s a sliver of horizon, where everything breaks perfectly to let me see for miles.
I wait for her here.
My sister thinks it’s ridiculous for the god of the sun to live in a place that is perpetually covered in cloud.
What she doesn’t understand, what she’s never understood is that my power isn’t bound just because I can’t see her.
I can feel the sun.
I can feel the way the air lightens and the heavy weight of darkness eases back, a little. The way the power that is mine, that I have mostly ignored for centuries, tingles awake like a limb that hasn’t been used in too long. Tempting to shake out and flex, just to make the pins and needles pain go away.
I shove that down and twist my ring and tilt my head back, until I’m smiling into the clouds, and far beyond the dreary gray, my girl rises to greet the day, and me.
I sit there for a long time, while the sun creeps up and the city comes awake.
It’s a strange place for me to choose as my own, but I like it. It reminds me of the little temple where Del lived, all those centuries ago. She always liked the way the mist clung to the grass and the way the shadows played in the valleys and between the sides of the mountains. She would tease and tell me that even as powerful as I was, I did not rule everything.
Del always liked knocking me into my place. Liked to forget that I was a god.
A wide eyed girl shaking with terror and screaming with visions, cowering from me.
I blink.
A girl with a smirk and violet eyes that seem worried and ancient, and her fingers dig into her skin, drawing blood even as she laughs and kisses me.
Del.
I shudder and sway on the edge of the roof.
The past is blurry. So damn blurry, but there are moments that stand out, sharp and painful.
This is a bad idea, Father.
I smile, tight and bitter. She would be so proud of herself, that she was right. My girl was always damn good at reaching into the future, even further than the ones who came before her.
I shake that thought, shake the fingers of madness that clutch too tight today, and push myself off the edge of the building. Power scratches along my skin, clawing at my shoulder and I dangle there, balanced on my toes on the edge of the building, poised between sky and sun and nothingness.

review

Wake the Hollow is a great YA suspense novel with a touch of romance involved. I loved Triana’s take on this legendary work – The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.

I can’t say enough about this book. First off, Trianadoes a fabulous job of giving you details about Irving, all his works plus his personal details to give more depth to this story. Even if you aren’t a fan of Irving, this book will have you wanting to look things up on google and wanting to learn more about everything that is Irving related.

Back to the book – I loved how Triana wove in her own modern ideas into this tale and make it more intriguing to read about these tales. Mica has returned home only to discover as she stays there longer, she is starting to act like her mother did. She hears voices, sees apparitions and can’t seem to explain why it’s all happening to her.

“Forget the ghosts, Mica. It’s real, live people you should fear.”

Triana does a great job of keeping you in suspense throughout this book. There are many people involved and you only have hunches as to who could be behind what. Triana does a great job of retelling the Sleepy Holly story wit her own twists to it along with the added mystery of Mica’s mother and their family history. It’s a very crafty story line.

“All these, however, were mere terrors of the night, phantoms of the mind that walk in darkness.”

I would really recommend this story to anyone who enjoys a good YA suspense story or anyone that enjoys The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Readers will find themselves engrossed in the story quickly and enjoying the modern twist on this legendary tale.

review

My love for books has always been in the thriller/horror genre and my love of reading has over time pushed me into many other categories such as this one, YA and Dystopia.  I read the blurb for Floor 21 and was quite intrigued by it and had to see what Jason does with this story.
Floor 21 is written in a first narrative and I don’t think this story could have been told in any other way.  We get to see things in recordings from Jackie and Vic.  If this story was told any other way, it wouldn’t have that same urgency or unique mystery to it.  Reading about the Tower and the Creep from their view points keeps this story strong moving at a great pace.
While I had some issues with Jackie and her personality,  she’s young yet extremely intelligent, her mannerisms and the way she talked at times, didn’t always mesh with her suppose intelligence.  I felt that Jason wrote some very interesting characters with different attributes.  Although we don’t get to know these other characters very well, through the eyes of Jackie and Vic, we have a good understanding these characters.
Jason did a great job of keeping me on the edge of my seat.  I enjoyed the mysteries of the Tower and the Creep and how things came to be.  There are still quite a few outstanding questions and mysteries, which I am hoping in the next book we get answers to.
Overall, a great YA dystopia read.  I highly recommend to others who enjoy this genre.

Book Excerpt

When you stop and think about it, I mean, our lives don’t make sense. We couldn’t have always lived up here, right? It gets me pretty antsy thinking about it because, I mean, this is a tower, so we had to have come up the stairs at some point.
Didn’t we?
I don’t know, and thinking about it gets me frustrated. When I’m in this kind of mood, I go to the rooftop and look out. You can actually see other towers rising up in the distance. Some aren’t even that far from ours. I stare at them, and I’m just like . . . is anybody over there? Is anybody looking back at me? Does anybody know or remember we’re trapped in this place?
Or are we all that’s left?
After I’ve gotten myself sufficiently depressed, I’ll stare over the edge of the roof, trying to see how far below I can look. Thing is, it’s impossible to see much. This tower just vanishes into the Darkness. Nobody, and I mean nobody, even knows why.
It’s just blackness down there.
Oh, about Floor 12. Yeah, that’s where the Creep really starts. The Creep? It’s
this . . . gunk. Super-disgusting stuff that you shouldn’t touch because it makes you feel weird, and the lower down the Tower you go, the more you see it. It starts to cover the walls, and it’s kinda gross. It’s really slick, like saliva, and it looks all muscle-y. Almost alive. Good thing you don’t have to worry about it when you’re higher than Floor 11. Still, I
wonder what it is. We all do. I know that when you touch it, you can start hallucinating.
I did once. Well, okay, I’m lying. I’ve touched it a few times when I’ve been
on the lower levels, which is why my parents made the rule that I couldn’t head down there in the first place. I mean, I don’t pay attention to them, but I get why they don’t want me going that far below into the Tower. The Creep makes you see . . . things. Shadowy things. Sometimes they’re right
in front of you, but most of the time, they’re in the corner of your eye. They
say that by Floor 21, you don’t even have to touch the Creep to hallucinate,
which is a total trip. Must suck to live down there.

Overview

In New York City, an underground society of supernatural beings exists, hidden among everyday humans. They don’t know of our activities or any of our secrets.

The districts of the Works are made up of vampires, wolves, shifters, witches, and I’m in the fifth and arguably most important district, the Patchwork. My father is the leader of our group, and he oversees all of the other factions.

As his only daughter, that makes me the princess of it all. Cool, right? Actually…no.
Sure, I live in a mansion and money isn’t an object, but that doesn’t matter because I can’t leave. I have a guard who follows me around 24/7. My father and three older brothers treat me like I’m a fragile piece of glass, never allowed to take an independent step or make any decisions on my own.
It’s beyond frustrating–especially since my father essentially runs my life.
He says what I do, when I do it, how I do it, and all that jazz. He tests his formulas and new techniques on me. I’m a walking science experiment.
I hate it.
I hate my life here.

But then he comes along: Killian.
He’s just some vampire…or so I thought.

But you’ll have to read my story to find out what I mean. To know my secrets.
Until then, though, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Rebekah von Stein.
And I’m a descendant of Dr. Frankenstein.

Welcome to the Works.

“Wow! Toni Aleo is the queen of hockey romance but now she writes paranormal flawlessly. Is there anything she can’t write? I think not. She weaved this new world of witches, wolves, vampires and Dr. Frankenstein’s descendants, that had me hooked from the very first page. It was a fresh new story that I devoured in one sitting. This story was filled with suspense, mystery and romance. It had me on edge wanting, no, needing to know what would happen next.” – GoodReads Review \\ Jill M \\ Embrace The Romance

“Okay, so what the hell? I didn’t see that coming. I mean, really, the queen of hockey writing about vampires, werewolves and Dr. Frankenstein’s descendants? Let me be a little sceptical. And after I read it, let me apologize for it. This book was a fresh wave. I devoured it. It took me only one night to finish it because this story didn’t let me go. I’m sitting here trying to put together the pieces – not funny – but I can’t. I want to read more books like this one. Just keep it up, Toni!” – GoodReads Review \\ Becca

“I loved this book it was phenomenal.I could not put it down for anything. I help my breath for most of it and still didn’t fully exhale when it was over! The end was left with a bit of a cliffhanger and it has me wanted so much more!” – GoodReads Review \\ Ash \\ Morning Books and Coffee
