The Damaged Hero and Why I Love Him

When I create my hero for my series, the first thing I dream up about other than his gorgeous rock hard abs, piercing eyes, and fine a–, is the true crux of his journey.

His issues.

I adore issues. The more the better. Give me an alpha man, who’s been hurt, dragged through the mud, abused, and is afraid of trust, emotion and commitment, and you have me hooked.

Umm, I swear I’m a pretty happy person in my real life. And my husband has none of those problems.  Swear.

But fiction is where the excitement and sex and truth is dragged out and exposed for a reader’s pleasure.

Bring it.

My marriage to a billionaire series started with my fantastic hero, Nick, in The Marriage Bargain. His parents screwed him up big time, so he struggled when struck by Alexa’s inner light, humor, and kindness. I loved slowly breaking down his walls and watching him discover he is able, and deserving, of love.

Michael stormed the pages of The Marriage Trap, less damaged than my usual heroes in order to let my heroine, Maggie take center stage. But this hot tempered, gorgeous Italian was going to claim his bride no matter how hard the path was. He struggles with his own family issues and is challenged to fight for something he believes in. I loved watching him come to that realization and taking my snarky heroine by storm.

Maximus was my older, elegant, James Bond type hero from The Marriage Mistake. His father left him when he was young, and he gives new meaning to the term commitment phobe. Of course, he never expected Michael’s younger sister to seductively pursue him, and make him squirm both physically and emotionally to claim something he’d never wanted before. Watching his journey left me breathless and wanting…more.

What’s next? Make way for my most damaged hero of all, Sawyer Wells from the upcoming The Marriage Merger. He’s so damaged he made me work even harder to try to heal his wounds and urge him believe in love. When I hook him up with the last Conte sister, Julietta, my workaholic, strong willed, successful CEO, literal sparks shall fly. It releases July 30th everywhere,  and is up for preorder so claim your copy together.

Thanks to Jillian for having me here to summarize a bit of my series and give such a fab giveaway!!

Happy Reading!

Teaser:

Alexia ignored the tremor that traveled from the place where their hands touched, along her arm and down her body, landing a quiver of want deep in her core. Any time now, it would be fan-fricking-tastic if her body could stop reacting to him like he’d been double-dipped in her favorite brand of pheromones.

She reached for her blue Jansport backpack, just next to the bedroom door. He made no move to let go or get out of her way, and she was forced to squeeze past his tree-trunk thigh in the process. She failed horribly at ignoring how frigging huge those legs of his were. How the V of her thighs brushed his leg when she passed, and how her body temperature climbed. Stop staring at his ass. “Right. Got everything ready to go, right here.” She cleared her throat.

“Great. I’ll drive,” he grumbled.

Did he realize, as he tugged her down the hall, that his fingers were still wrapped around her hand?

Valentine’s Day in Dog Tags Event: Interview and GIVEAWAY

DogTagEventFINAL

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Today is the big finale of my Valentine’s Day in Dog Tags Event!

Recently, I was lucky enough to have a moment to chat with Skye, Tim, Madison and Jeremy and see what they are planning for their holiday.  I was also lucky enough to have some fun with author Jeanette Murray and see what her idea of Valentine’s Day fun is!

I am giving away an eCopy of The Officer Says I do and The Officer Breaks the Rules since I know you guys will love the series as much as I do.  You can enter to win in the rafflecopter below!

Enjoy!

____________________

Ok…since I don’t want to ask the same old questions that I’m sure you guys hear all the time (the dreaded “so, when are you having kids?” for you, Skye and Tim) I figured, since we are celebrating Valentine’s Day soon, I’d see what you all had planned!  No groaning and pouting, you know you want to tell me some juicy details….

~ Skye and Tim: So…..any fantastic Valentine’s Day plans?

Skye: “You know, I had this wonderful plan to head out to a little restaurant two streets over from Fletcher’s, because who wants to have their special evening where they work? Quiet dinner, just the two of us. That is, until someone managed to pull overnight duty…”

Tim: “I’m sorry! Look, I don’t choose the hours of who gets stuck with duty. You go when it’s your time. It would be irresponsible and a bad example to pawn it off on someone else. And besides, we’ll get a better table the next night. No competition for the day after Valentine’s Day.”

Skye: “Yeah, fine. So you told me. Let’s just say…you owe me.”

Tim: “I’m sorry, I thought you didn’t even like all that traditional stuff.”

Skye: “Maybe I’m a romantic at heart.”

Madison: “Of course you are. You married my brother thanks to Fate, right? That has to have its root in romance.”

Skye: “Good point.”

Tim: “Thanks, Madison.”

~ Madison and Jeremy:  How about you two?  Anything special planned?

Madison: “At the risk of Skye killing us, we’re ordering in and watching a double-header. His pick, then my pick of movies.”

Jeremy: “It’ll be an early night, since Madison has work the next morning.”

Madison: “But I’m glad for the chance to spend it together.”

Skye: “Okay, I’m going to just smother you. I have keys to both your apartments.”

Tim: “Not helping, Mad. After all that Fate junk earlier—”

Skye: “Junk?!”

Tim: “I mean…Fate talk…you pull that.”

Madison: “Whoops! My bad.”

And now, for the awesomesauce author, Jeanette, I have some word association fun! (no groaning and pouting from you either haha!)

First word that comes to mind……

– Conversation hearts: Blah (Not a fan!)

– Roses: Ahhh-choo! (Allergic)

– The color pink: Tot (3 year old daughter’s favorite color EVA!!!!)

– Edible underwear (sorry, I couldn’t resist!): Disaster (…waiting to happen)

hahahahahaha Apparently I am a Valentine’s Day FAILURE! No, but really, out of all the Valentines in the past we have been dating or married, Hubs and I have been physically together for…wait for it…two. Out of ten. Not a great record, right? So I’ve sort of just trained myself to not expect magic on the holiday. But, on the plus side, this gets me out of having to worry about what to do for him. So there’s the bright side. One year, just randomly, he had an Edible Arrangements sent to the house. That was a nice surprise, and perfect for me since I’m allergic to flowers and I love fruit. But otherwise, we just sort of ignore its existence.

But I think if I had to choose to make a big deal out of Valentine’s Day, I’d pick Madison and Jeremy’s date over Tim and Skye’s. Watch a movie or two on the couch, have a meal ordered in, and just veg. I’m all about it. Fancy dinners are nice but I’m lazy and getting dressed up stresses me out. Haha

So there are all my deep, dark Valentine’s secrets. I’m a lazy slob. 🙂

Hope you all enjoyed the fun interview and Valentine’s Day in Dog Tags!

Special thanks to Jeanette for joining in on the fun and for writing some kick ass heros!

Breakstherules COVER

Synopsis:

Captain Jeremy Phillips believes in doing his duty…both as a son and as a friend. This means that he should obey the “friend code” and stay away from his best friend’s little sister. Too bad Madison O’Shay doesn’t believe in his code and is ready to break all of the rules

As a Navy nurse, Madison is finally stationed next to the man she’s been dreaming about for years. And she’s ready to launch a full-scale attack to show this thoughtful, handsome Marine that they belong together.

My Review:

This is the second book in Jeanette Murray’s Semper Fidelis, Always Faithful Series and I was so excited to read it after LOVING the first in the series, The Officer Says I Do.  I was not disappointed!  In fact, I loved it even more than the first!

Madison has been in love with Jeremy for quite some time now….years in fact.  She has a sneaking suspicion that he may have feelings for her, too. Now, after a delicious but disastrous first kiss, she has concocted a plan to ensure she wins the man she knows she’s meant to be with.  Poor Jeremy doesn’t stand a chance….

Jeremy has it bad…he’s head over heels for Madison.  Who wouldn’t be?  She’s smart, beautiful, spunky, a real spitfire…and his best friend’s little sister.  In other words: off-limits.  After kissing her, he knows he’s gotta walk away.  Only that proves to be a losing battle when Madison sets her sights on showing him exactly why they are meant to be together.  Add trying to please his father in continuing with a career as a Marine, a career he isn’t sure is for him anymore, and Jeremy is just plain tired.  Tired of fighting the losing battle with Madison and tired of being someone he’s not to his father.  Now the question is….what the hell’s a guy to do?

Good Lord…I loved every minute of this book.  The push and pull between Madison and Jeremy was delectable! Madison is an amazing heroine.  She’s strong willed and went for the prize, consequences be damned! She is exactly my kind of gal.  Jeremy broke my heart and was a hero so worth fighting for.  He’s the kind of guy that puts those he loves ahead of himself and always thinks of himself second.  He’s loyal and kind-hearted but doesn’t like to show his soft side to many.  He is a Marine, after all! Together they complete each other in the most perfect way.  I laughed while reading this book, cried while reading this book, got über frustrated with both Jeremy and Madison while reading this book and ultimately finished feeling utterly contented and so very happy.

Plus, we also got to see our fave characters from the first book, Tim and Skye, and found out a teensy bit more about the mysterious Veronica, Skye’s cousin.  I’m also guessing that the next on the series will be featuring Veronica and Dwayne *squeeeeee*

Thank you Jeanette for reminding me how amazing it feels to fall in love with a book.  I’ve SO missed having that “I need to drop all responsibilities and READ” feeling! I’m eagerly awaiting the next book…can’t wait!

~ So, Scarlet, now that you gave up on resisting Rowan’s bad boy charm, how are you guys doing?  Do you regret anything that led you to this point?

“Have you seen him? Would YOU regret anything that led him to your bed?”

~ Rowan, have you gone back in to watch Scarlet spar with the other warriors since that day with Kane?

“That’s a negative. I was told in no uncertain terms that hurting my warrior brethren was off-limits, and since the urge to smash faces when someone hurts Scarlet is basically overwhelming, watching her train is off-limits, too.”

~ So….what’s next for you two?

*Scarlet, looking slyly at Rowen* “Well, there is a bottle of wine chilling in the fridge.”

*Rowen, glaring at interviewer* “Time for you to be on your way.”

~ Lily, girl, first let me say, you have delicious taste in lingerie! I’m sure Kane will agree *wink*….ok, ok, how’s the bakery idea doing?  Any concepts you’d like to share with us?

*Lily, blushing*  “Not yet. And lingerie isn’t so different from a decadently topped cupcake. Everything’s better with a little icing.”     *winks*

~ Kane, did you finally get around to telling Ambrose you were dating Lily?  How’d that go? *shrinking back in my seat hoping it didn’t go badly*

“Ambrose was surprisingly accepting of the idea. Ivan is another story.” *grumbles about protective big brothers*

~ Ok, I gotta ask you two also…..what’s next for you guys?

*Kane, glancing at Lily* “I’m hoping for a houseful of kids, cookies in the oven, and Lily in my arms.”

*Lily beams*

~ Lily and Scarlet, how is your brother these days? Is he still a royal pain in the ass?

*Scarlet rolls eyes* “Is the sky blue? Is water wet? Is Rowen hotter than hot?”

(Lily) “Come on, Scarlet. He HAS been better since he met-”

(Scarlet) “Shhhh! Are you crazy? You’re going to spoil their fun!”

*Lily nodding* “You’re right. They’ll just have to read the next book.”

Way to leave us hanging, ladies! I know I can’t wait for Temptation’s Fire on February 15th!

Blood Vine by Amber Belldene….Blog Tour, Excerpt, Review & Giveaway

BannerFinal Blood Vine a1-1

Buy Blood Vine at Amazon or at Barnes & Noble

Synopsis:

In Blood Vine, bites are an inconvenient bliss, exiled vampires are wasting away, and the fate of their kind depends on the perfect PR campaign.

When public relations pro Zoey Porter arrives at an enchanting California winery, she discovers her sexy new client is the almost one-night stand she can’t forget. After her husband’s suicide, Zoey has vowed never to risk her heart again. But can she walk away from the intriguing winemaker a second time?

Driven from Croatia by his ancient foes, vampire Andre Maras has finally made a blood-like wine to cure his fellow refugees. Now he needs Zoey’s PR expertise to reach them. After his wife’s death, Andre has a vow of his own—never to risk another painful blood bond. And one taste of the tempting Zoey would bind him to her eternally.

His secrets stall her PR plans. Her jealousy is stoked by the blissed-out beauties leaving his bedroom. At every turn, he utterly fails to resist her. When she discovers he is a vampire, will she be lost to the golden-eyed Hunters, or lose herself to the emptiness in her heart, before she can help him save his kind?

Exclusive excerpt:

To die on the Hunt was the greatest honor, though it offered little solace at the moment. That smug son of a bitch Ethan had been right—he shouldn’t have come alone. Blood pounded in his ears. Would they make him watch while they ripped out his entrails?

BloodVineCoverOne of the vampires called out to him from the darkness. “Hunter, don’t they teach you to stand down wind?”

Words pressed against the lump in his throat.

“Too bad for you,” the other said.

Then they were on him. One pushed him to the ground and placed a knee into his back. Dirt and dust filled his mouth, choking him, and he spit, trying to get the grit out. A hand gripped his shoulder and flipped him.

He looked up into the eyes of his target.

“It will have to be gory,” said Andre Marasović. “If we do not make an example of him, they will think they’ve won.”

“Can’t have that,” the son said.

“Kill him first. Then we will make our example.”

Surprise was the last emotion to flutter through the Hunter’s heart—a vampire had shown him mercy.

My Review:

The minute I received this information on this book, I was intrigued.  I was eager to start and see just how this spin on the vampire world would play out and I gotta say…WOW!  This story was a-freaking-mazing!

Zoey is a talented PR agent working for a successful firm in California.  She’s beautiful, young and should be feeling like she’s got it all…only she knows she doesn’t.  She’s been mourning the death of her husband for a few years now and has put up an icy wall that no one will be able to penetrate.  It’s easier that way.  After all, if you don’t let people in, you can’t get hurt if they leave.  So she’s managed to keep her love life to a fling with her boss and one attempt at a one-night stand with a handsome stranger she met in a bar.  However, for some reason, the minute she laid eyes on that stranger, she knew there was something more to him and it was a bad idea…so she shored up her icy reserve and left him where he sat on the barstool.  Imagine her surprise when the owner of the vineyard she’s now representing is the very same man she left sitting on the barstool….

Andre is a centuries old vampire living on his vineyard and desperately trying to come up with a cure for the disease that is slowly killing him and his fellow vampires.  Since the Hunters, a group of zealots hell-bent on wiping out the vampire race, have exiled him and hundreds of other vampires form Croatia, he has been working on a cure and believes he’s finally found it….in the wine he has made using the vines from his homeland.  Now, with the help of a PR firm, he needs to get word out to his fellow refugees.  Could it be fate has more in store for him when the woman that left him dumbfounded, sitting on a barstool months earlier is the very same woman sent to help with his PR work?

Together, Zoey and Andre, along with his friends, house staff and two sons, they have the fight of a lifetime ahead of them.  The Hunters are closing in, the wine and the vineyard need to remain safe so the vampire race can be cured, and they need to figure out if this attraction between them is something worth exploring.

This book kicked ass.  I know, I know…we’ve all read a million vampire stories but this is a book I highly recommend no matter how many vampire tales you’ve explored.  The dynamic between the characters is fantastic.  Every move Zoey made in this book is EXACTLY what I would have done.  She wasn’t unrealistic or overly emotional.  She took things at face value and was level headed where many other heroines would have gone into hysterics. I really appreciated Zoey’s genuineness.  She was strong and stoic when she needed to be yet somehow kept her soft side.

Andre is delicious.  He is kind, determined, responsible and oh-so utterly male.  His love for his sons and for the staff that helps him in his quest to save the vampire race, is so endearing.  He is a man who knows what he wants at when push comes to shove, he gets it.

Along with Zoey and Andre, we meet Lucas and Pedro, who are amazing.  They absolutely broke my heart…I cannot wait to see what the future holds for them.  Andre’s sons, Kos and Bel, are also characters that capture your heart as well and I also am excited to see what happens for them in this series. This book had everything I love in a great story…love, loss, conflict, devious villains, heroes and heroines worth rooting for and great originality.

I won’t go into too much more detail, because I am not a spoilery kind of gal, but I will tell you this….put this book on your to-read list and settle in for a great read.  I absolutely LOVED this book and see this series becoming a success we will be talking about for some time.  Thank you, Amber, for a remarkable read!

This is the second book in the Chronicles of Yavyn series and follows King of Darkness.  I was so looking forward to this book and the story of Anton and Tyra and I will say…Elisabeth friggin nailed it!

We first meet Anton and Tyra in King of Darkness and this book picks up where we had left off.

Vampires and Wizards have always been at war.  However it is at this juncture that things have reached a critical point.  Anton is the son of the Wizard Master and has been charged with the task of kidnapping the vampire king’s sister, Tyra.  The Master wants to kill Tyra and absorb the unique powers and abilities she was born with.  Only once Anton starts his surveillance, he realizes how amazing Tyra is.  She’s caring, fierce, beautiful and strong…. there is no way Anton can kill her and deprive the world of one such as her.  He’s never truly fit into the Wizard world of violence and certainly has no love for the “father” that has beaten and neglected him his entire life.  He cannot continue to live a lie and he realizes he needs to act, and it must be soon.  Now, he just has to figure out how to save not only Tyra’s life, but also his own.

Tyra has been lucky in finding something she truly loves…her work at the homeless shelter.  In the intense, brutal war she, her brother the king, and their vampire guard have been waging against the wizards, this is the one thing that brings her peace.  However, nothing like a mysterious, handsome, stranger saving your life to throw a wrench into things.  Now she has to figure out who has is and why he knows so much about her…and if she can ever learn to trust a wizard.

What a fantastic book this was!  We got see deeper into the wizard and vampire cultures and learn more of the web the two sides weave together to create the conflict they have been living for years.  There are some intense fight scenes that had me gripping my e-reader with white knuckles and parts that I audibly gasped at.  I love to feel that from a book.  I love to feel like I’m there, watching it all play out in front of me.  However, the parts I loved the most were the moments between Anton and Tyra.  Anton broke my heart.  Totally crushed it. He is a broken soul who wants nothing more than to be worthy of Tyra and her love.  He has known nothing other than hurt and violence…hate and pain.  I absolutely love him.  Tyra is the exact amount of hard and soft in a heroine that I love.  She’s a female fighter in a war but when all is laid bare…she’s a woman we can all identify with.  A woman just trying to make sense of life and trying to learn to let her guard down and give love a chance.

I found this book, like King of Darkness, to be a fresh take on the vampire world.  One of the things I enjoy most about all of the characters Ms. Staab has created is that they don’t have all the answers.  They are vulnerable in an endearing way.  They all have a weakness that we are able to see in their private moments.  Hell, we get to see the strong guys cry every now and then! I appreciate that.  It gives the characters an authenticity that is frequently lacking.

We also get to see more of our favorites from King of Darkness….Thad, Isabel, Lee, Alexia and Siddoh.  Plus, there’s a secondary story involving Theresa and Xander that put me through the emotional wringer…and I loved every tear inducing moment! I cannot WAIT for the next book and know this is a series I will be keeping up with in the future!  Thank you, Elisabeth, for another amazing read!  Oh, and for getting me to cry!

I spoke with Elisabeth and asked her what one of her favorite moments in this book was and, well, she didn’t just tell me, she is sharing it with all of you in this EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT! Enjoy!

Excerpt:

Dark shadows lingered underneath Anton’s gray eyes, and he needed a great deal of effort to hold himself up. He was worn out. Keyed up. She would bet he was running on fumes.

“I’ve been in torpor,” she said. “How long?”

On the desk lay a stack of those little two-packs of saltine crackers. The kind that came from the salad bars of restaurants. Or in this case, probably the shelter dining hall. He scratched his head, then picked each one up and counted as he slapped them back onto the desk. “One… two… three… four… five… six… seven… eight… nine… Ten days.”

Tyra squeezed her eyes shut.

He pointed to the crackers. “I brought some back for you every day from the dining hall at dinner. Stupid, but it made me feel like I was doing something for you. Other than that–and taking a piss–I didn’t go anywhere. Didn’t want to leave you alone.”

Holy cow. He’d watched over her all that time. She didn’t know quite what to say to that. And odd warmth bloomed in her chest…

And, because Elisabeth is incredibly generous and full of awesome, she has given me a SIGNED ADVANCE PAPERBACK COPY of Prince of Power to give to a lucky fan! How awesome!

About the Author:

esElisabeth Staab still lives with her nose in a book and at least one foot in an imaginary world. She believes that all kinds of safe and sane love should be celebrated but she adores the fantasy-filled realm of paranormal romance the best. She lives in the Washington DC area

with her family and one big scaredy cat, where she loves to spend time with good friends, go dancing, collect wacky coffee mugs from which to drink her favorite beverage, and sing off-key in her kitchen (when she isn’t making characters fall in love, that is).

Author Bio:

Amber Belldene grew up on the Florida panhandle, swimming with alligators, climbing oak trees and diving for scallops…when she could pull herself away from a book.  As a child, she hid her Nancy Drew novels inside the church bulletin and read mysteries during sermons—an irony that is not lost on her when she preaches these days.

With a B.A. in comparative religion and an M.A. in theology, Amber is a Christian minister and student of religion.  She believes stories are the best way to explore human truths.  Some people think it is strange for a minister to write romance, but it is perfectly natural to Amber. She believes the human desire for love is at the heart of every romance novel and God made people with that desire.

Amber is addicted to vampire stories, but loves to read all kinds of romance and literature.  Her favorite books examine history and cultural origins, like Neal Stephenson’s Baroque Cycle, Anita Diamant’s The Red Tent, or Salmon Rushdie’s The Satanic Verses.  And, yes, she was named after that Amber, of the classic romance novel Forever Amber.

From the wine country of Sonoma County to the foggy neighborhoods of San Francisco, all of Amber’s fiction is set in Northern California, where she lives with her husband and two children.

EXCLUSIVE: The second in the Winemaker’s Feast Trilogy, The Winemaker’s Dinner: Entrée, RELEASE DATE, EXCERPT & GIVEAWAY

As some of you may already know, I read and LOVED The Winemaker’s Dinner: Appetizers by Dr. Ivan Rusilko and Everly Drummond and I have some exciting news to share! The wait is ALMOST over!  The second book in The Winemaker’s Feast Trilogy, The Winemaker’s Dinner: Entrée, will be available on DECEMBER 18, 2012!

Summary:

Dr. Ivan Rusilko has got it bad. He’s in love—with life, his work, and his baby girl, Jaden Thorne. The nearly 3000 miles between Miami and L.A. that once threatened their happily-ever-after now seem nothing more than a mere geographical challenge—nothing a few hours on a plane and a sexy weekend rendezvous can’t trump. No time apart is too long to keep him from wanting her in his arms and in his bed. He’s absolutely sure Jaden is his dream come true.

Jaden Thorne is living the life she’s always wanted. She’s got her one-in-a-million job on a TV cooking show, she’s achieved celebrity chef status, and she’s in a committed relationship with her perfect guy… Then the network’s surprise decision to add a co-host to her show takes a bite out of her perfectly balanced life and career. With a new man in the mix, living the dream gets a whole lot more complicated both personally and professionally.

When the emotional, mental, and physical paths of true love’s course collide with frustration, secrets, and assumptions, will Ivan and Jaden pay the price? Does their dream-come-true cost something neither can afford?

The Winemaker’s Dinner: Entrée is a decadent meal of passion, sex, and secrets, inspired by the real romantic life of Dr. Ivan Rusilko. Authors Everly Drummond and Dr. Ivan Rusilko have turned up the heat in this emotional follow up to The Winemaker’s Dinner: Appetizers, expertly executing their unique recipe for blending fact and fantasy, with more than a dash of passion and sex.

and now…..an EXCLUSIVE sneak peek for you!

“Catch me if you can!”

“Two can play this game,” he yelled after her as he began to run.

She took the stairs two at a time, and she could hear him drawing near. As she reached the top, her toe caught on the step. Red-hot pain shot through her knee as it skimmed the carpet, but that faded in an instant as Ivan wrapped his hands around her ankle and pulled. She slid down the stairs, and he captured her in his arms.

He rested his hands on either side of her head, steadying himself on the stairs, and hovered inches above her. “You didn’t really think you were going to outrun me, did you?”

“You haven’t caught me yet, doc,” she squealed, backing up the stairs.

A glint sparkled in Ivan’s eye. The tables had been turned. He was the cat and she was the mouse. He was the hunter. She was the prey. In a final gallant attempt at escape, she twisted her body and propelled herself up the steps.

She could feel him behind her, his hot breath tickling the back of her neck. They raced into the bedroom, and his arms wrapped around her waist. They collapsed onto the bed, succumbing to a fit of giggles. All around them were mounds of dresses that hadn’t made the cut, and they now provided an extra layer of cushioning. Jaden struggled to rid herself of the emerald green dress she wore while Ivan tossed around on the bed beside her, making quick work of his pants and shirt. This was the last time they’d see each other for weeks, so there was no time for pleasantries.
