My job is to protect my brotherhood, but that isn’t my only responsibility.I’m Kieran Hendry, the up-and-coming leader of The Order, and a new duty calls. I must take a wife.

A wife I don’t know.

A wife born into a position at the top of The Fellowship hierarchy.
A wife who will forge a strong alliance between her brotherhood and mine.

A wife I don’t want.I knew next to nothing about Westlyn Breckenridge when I abducted her, but I quickly discover that she’s intelligent, strong, defiant, selfless. And beautiful.

One night with her is all it takes for me to see that she is no typical Mafia princess. I’m hopeful this arranged marriage won’t be the miserable union I imagined it to be. But convincing my intended to give us a chance won’t be easy when she sees me as the enemy. The brute who kidnapped her. The vile fiend who threatened to do as he wished with her body.

Kieran
Hendry makes me feel like a woman. A desired woman. His words, the way he looks
at me, his body language. Everything he does is a huge turn-on. Yet I hate this
man. Loathe him. But damn, he has a way of touching me that makes me forget
every logical thought in my head. It doesn’t make sense to me how I can despise
him and at the same time respond so strongly to his touch.
It’s
my body reacting to him, not my head. It must be hormones and sex drive. Those
two things combined have the power to make people do things they wouldn’t
normally do.
“You’re
trembling.” He grazes the back of his fingers down my cheek and my stomach does
some kind of flip. “Do I frighten you?”
I
look away because I can’t tell him that it isn’t fear giving me the trembles.
He
grasps my chin and forces me to look at him. “Do. I. Frighten. You?”
“No.”
He
rubs my bottom lip with his thumb. “Then what is it?”
I
shake my head.
He
leans in for another kiss but stops before his lips touch mine. We’re so close
I can feel his breath on my mouth. Just like last night when my body turned to
mush.
I’m
quivering and my breath has become more rapid. I may even be a little
lightheaded.
His
bottom lip grazes mine, but he still doesn’t kiss me. “I’ll back off right now
if it’s what you want.”
I
don’t want him to back off. I also don’t want him to know that I don’t want him
to back off. Feels too much like giving in to something I’m not supposed to
crave.
“I’m
going to kiss you.”
I’m
his captive. We made an agreement. I must submit without a fight per our deal
to maintain Ellison’s safety.
Yeah. Keep telling yourself that,
Wes. Maybe if you say it enough, you’ll start to believe it.
His
fingers lace through my hair and he holds me prisoner when he lowers his mouth
to mine. I open, giving his tongue an invitation to come inside. The two meet,
and together they become erotic dance partners with Kieran taking the lead.
I’ve
only had one very forgettable kiss in my life. But this kiss… I could live a
million years and never forget it or the way I feel right now.
He
stops, his lips hovering over mine. His breath warm against my skin. “More or
stop? Your decision.”
He’s
asking me to venture further with him. My body says yes, but my head tells me
that one more step will take me to a place I shouldn’t go with this man. I’m
twenty-three and being kissed for the second time in my life. I don’t want this
to stop. “More.”

EXCERPT:

PROLOGUE

Frankie

Ten Years Ago

My fingers dig into the brown dirt between the patches of dead grass that used to once be a lush front yard. A jagged stone cuts into the soft flesh of my knee as I try to get control of the involuntary lurching of my stomach, which has me crippled on all fours.

Tears fall in streams, and I gasp for air as I hear the sound of heavy footsteps near me.

“Frances—”

“Get away from me!” I scream at the soft voice.

“It’s not—”

“I said get the hell away from me!” My stomach clenches against another wave of nausea as I hear her footprints begin to move away. “Goooooo!” I shout at her again.

I manage to look over my shoulder and see Whitney Carson’s long blonde hair swaying as she walks quickly back across the cul-de-sac to her piss yellow, beat-to-hell Mustang. I barely make out the swell of her belly as she slides into the driver’s seat and slams the door behind her. The roar of the engine tells me she’s leaving.

One last heave and there is nothing left for my stomach to expel, leaving me with only my tears. My throat burns, my breaths coming in small gasps when I feel soft arms around my shoulders.

I hear the creak of the old screen door and my mama’s worn shoes come into sight just before I feel her arms around me. “Baby girl, what’s wrong? We weren’t expecting you home from school until tomorrow…” Her voice is quiet, yet panicked as she kneels next to me, her white uniform dress getting dirty.

I finished my finals early so that I could come home early and surprise Cole and my mom, but the surprise was all mine. “Mama,” I cry between ragged breaths. “I came home early to surprise you and—”

“Stop,” she cuts me off, looking over my shoulder behind me. “Let’s get you inside. If this has anything to do with that girl that’s been coming around, he’s not worth your tears. You’re going to put your chin up and enjoy your summer.” She tugs at my arm in hopes to get me to budge.

I shake my head back and forth violently. “No. I can’t stay here,” I manage through my tears. I can’t stay and watch this happen. I can’t stay and watch them.

“What do you mean? Where would you go?” Her voice grows with concern.

“I don’t know, but I can’t stay here.” The hot summer air hangs heavy around us, and sweat beads along my forehead at my hairline. The thought of Cole touching Whitney Carson causes my stomach to flip again, and I dry heave as I pinch my eyes closed.

Mom rubs her hand over my arm as I try to gain my composure and move from all fours to sitting on the dirt. “Well, come inside until we figure this out.” Her voice is soft and sad. “I’ve always told you he was—”

“Please, stop—” I cut her off now, not wanting to talk about Cole with her.

I hear her deep sigh. “Come on. I’ll run you a hot bath. We need to get you cleaned up.”

The tears still fall in waves as my heart breaks with each step I take toward our house and away from Cole Ryan. As I think about it, the last few months begin to make sense. I sensed Cole pulling away from me. He’d become distant, not returning my calls or answering text messages. Mama called me and had told me about the rumors she’d heard, but we chose to chalk them up to small town gossip. Crescent Ridge is just that, a small town where no one has anything else to do but talk about other people and spread rumors.

Suddenly, realization hits me that the one person I trusted more than anyone in the world betrayed me. He’s been my best friend since I was eleven, my first crush, my first love, my first everything. No other person will ever etch himself so boldly into my history as Cole Ryan did. No other person held the cards to destroy me like Cole Ryan did. And did he ever.

I bite my tongue, tasting the slightest hint of blood as Mama walks me up the raggedy old front porch of our house. “Keep walking, baby girl.” She guides me through the front door. “Keep your chin held high,” she says quietly, the screen door slamming hard behind us.

She looks at me with sympathetic eyes and her voice cracks as she speaks. “Now you can fall apart, Frances. Don’t ever let him see you crumble; don’t give him that control. He is not worth your tears.”

And crumble is what I do as I sink to the faded wood floors of our living room, Mama rocking me in her lap, her fingers stroking my hair and wiping my tears. I cry and scream for the love I believed in, for the boy who owned my heart, and the loss of the one person I long for—the one person I had planned to spend my last breath with.

Mama holds me for hours as my tears come and go. At the first hints of the morning sunlight, I peel myself from Mama’s lap, my head pounding from the hours of crying. I pull my cell phone from my back pocket and press the name of the only other friend I have.

“Ash.” My voice breaks and I barely make out what she’s saying, but one thing is certain. I’m getting the hell out of Crescent Ridge and never looking back. “I’m coming,” I tell her.

Between my tears and gasping breaths, I disconnect my call and see Mama swipe at the tears on her aging cheeks. She sat here all night comforting me as I lay helpless in her lap. In the end, she’s the one person who believes in me and has loved me unconditionally, and here I am about to leave her behind. Leave everything I know and love behind, without a second thought. For good.

I know that when I drive away from here today, I’ll never be back—I can’t come back. I’m leaving my broken heart behind, along with the only man I’ve ever loved.

I toss my bag and one small box of belongings from my childhood bedroom in the trunk of my car and slide into the driver’s seat of my old Honda. Without a second thought, I put the car in drive and glance just once out my rearview mirror as I pull away. The last thing I see is Cole Ryan, hunched over the paint-chipped railing of his front porch as I drive away from Crescent Ridge, leaving him, my past, and my mama behind.

“Babe, do you know where my anti-frizz serum is?”

“Piper, why would I know where that is? I don’t use hair products.”

“Ben.” She sighs. It’s a sweet sigh with a smile as she approaches me. Once her hands wrap around my waist, I mimic her move, tug her to me, and lower my lips to hers. After a few dozen kisses that leave her panting, I pull away and allow her to continue speaking. Instead, Piper stands before me, her eyes closed and her lips lifted to a smirk.

“You had something to say, babe?”

“Huh? Oh, yeah. How do you do that?”

“What’s that?” I ask as I walk to the refrigerator and pull out a bottle of water, opening it and quickly finishing half of it off in one gulp.

“Kiss me stupid. I know I had a question, but you do that and I forget my own name.”

“Piper Sullivan.”

“Gosh, I love when you say that.” Piper walks up to me and steals the bottle of water from my hands, taking her own sip before handing it back to me.

“Only seven days. Anyway, you were asking about hair products. I don’t know where any of that is, but if it’s a serum, my sister probably has it. Witchy powers and all that,” I tease.

Piper smacks my arm, which causes me to fake a flinch and turn my back toward her as though I’m protecting myself. “Be nice; that’s my best friend you’re making fun of.”

“Oh, come on. If I can’t make fun of my own sister, what’s the point of having her? Besides, you know she’s been a little on edge lately. More so than usual. Are you sure we should’ve asked her to sing at the wedding?”

Exclusive Excerpt:

I made my way across the room and leaned on the wall next to the window, looking at her as I crossed my arms. “Angelina.”

She turned her gaze to me, and the sadness in her eyes almost broke me apart.

“You care about all of these people. But who takes care of you?

Her bottom lip trembled; I’d clearly hit a nerve. Hatred spread inside me for all those people—her uncle most of all—who only looked at her like a paycheck or an opportunity and nothing else. Had they forgotten she was a human being, too? Did they not realize that no person could keep doing what she did without burning out?

Angelina just shook her head. I didn’t even think about what I did next; I was going on total instinct. Taking her hands, I moved her arms down from where she held them crossed over her stomach and put mine around her. She inhaled a sharply, but to my relief, she didn’t push me away.

Trembling, she leaned into me, pulled me a bit tighter and nestled her head against my chest.

“You should have somebody who cares about you. For you.” I caressed her cheek, where a blush was blooming.

When her lashes fluttered, I couldn’t help myself any longer. Leaning down, I pressed my mouth to hers, and the touch of her silky sweet lips against my own sent fire raging through my blood. I wrapped her tighter in my embrace as she clutched at my shirt and moaned against me.

Within seconds, I was shaking as well. I hadn’t planned on kissing her—and I sure as hell hadn’t planned on kissing her like I wanted to claim her as my own. But it happened, and my head started spinning.

This was madness. Stupid. She was rich. Famous. Gorgeous. She dated race car drivers and movie stars. She was so far above my pay grade I shouldn’t even be breathing the same air. I was a former SEAL, a bodyguard sworn to protect her, not seduce her.

But my body seemed to have a mind of its own.

My fingers brushed against her jaw, urging her to open it for me. When she parted her lips, I exalted. Our tongues tangled, and I drank from her lips like a man needing water in the dessert. Whatever I’d felt with her before was long gone, replaced by something even stronger, wilder. More possessive. Instinctive. Needy—and I didn’t need anyone.

This was dangerous.

Focusing on her sweet lips, I ran a hand down her spine while she played with the hair at the nape of my neck. I was about to suggest we move to the bed, but a sharp knock on the door made her jump. I raised my head, and gently pushed her behind me just before the door burst open.

Immediately, I was in go mode, ready to take on anyone coming for her. As I turned to face the intruder, I was greeted with a familiar face standing in the door. I didn’t know her personally, but I recognized her from the entourage looming over Angelina every night at the arena.

“Angelina!” the woman cried out, her expression unreadable. I couldn’t tell if she was relieved or pissed. She gave a heavy, exaggerated sigh before hurrying over to Angelina to embrace her.

I moved toward the corner of the room, keeping out of the way on the sidelines. Back where I belonged. Lord knew I had no place among those land piranha. We had been lucky for sure. Her reflexes had been just as sharp as mine, allowing us to jump back from one another before the door had even fully clicked open.

But even as the rest of her leeches crowded around her, all I could think about was the softness of her lips. The more I reminisced about that kiss, the more I could still feel her lips on my own. The taste of her; her body curved against mine. Though I knew better, I found myself hoping that tonight wouldn’t be my only shot at those lips. I couldn’t help wanting more—she was perfect.

Another familiar voice echoed through the room, and my body stiffened. “Jesus Christ, that took forever.” Angelina’s uncle pushed through the crowd of people, but he didn’t hug his niece. Instead, he stood there, hands on his hips, narrowing his eyes as he looked down at her like she was a child. “Really, Angelina? You couldn’t have waited for us? You’re always so selfish.”

Angelina was at a loss for words—but I wasn’t. I had several on my tongue waiting for him. But—I managed to keep my mouth shut as she said, “I didn’t know—”

“Of course, you didn’t! You never think, Angie.” Her uncle tapped her on the temple, and she blushed in humiliation. “Never. Like I said… you’re selfish.”

I was going to take that fat rodent’s finger and twist it off if he touched her again. Slowly.

Breathe… just breathe. I gritted my teeth and told myself to behave. That maiming her uncle or punching him in the face wouldn’t help the situation. That this mess, this woman, Angelina, famous pop music star and her too beautiful to be real persona, was none of my business.

But she was. Like it or not, I was already involved—especially after that kiss.

Angelina needed someone to protect her. There was no walking away. Not for me.

As I watched her smile her fake smile and try to appease everyone around her, I made a shockingly easy decision.

She was mine. She just didn’t know it yet.

Excerpt:

Levi lifted Petunia and placed her in the sudsy water. She seemed to like it, too, just like the lady said she would. She made a strange half-honk and half-squealing sound. Carly kept quiet and let Levi work. Quiet worked for her, too, especially when it involved watching Levi bend and, as his board shorts ran down low on his hips, reveal a patch of golden skin. He had a perfect ass. And it was official—Carly was boy crazy. Er, man crazy. She and Petunia, that is. The smart pig had rolled on her side, perhaps to make it easier for Levi to cop a feel. Carly would swear Petunia had batted her eyelashes at the man.

“You okay?” Levi squatted next to Petunia, rubbing her belly with a wet brush as he washed her. He cocked his head to Carly, waiting for her answer.

If she was talking about the other night, no, she was not. She’d been thinking about him way too much. “I didn’t know they’d be here. She just…showed up.”

“It’ll be okay.” He spoke smoothly and without an ounce of emotion.

That was Levi. Cool. Calm. No fear. She wondered if he’d give her lessons.

He rinsed Petunia off one last time with a large sponge, then lifted her out of the tub and straightened to his full height.

“She wants to know a good time to go out to dinner. What should I say?”

“Stall.”

“Good idea. I’ll tell her I’m too busy with work. You’re too busy with work. We’re both just way too busy.”

“So long as you don’t make it sound like we’re so busy we can’t take care of Grace.”

“Right.”

“I’m not worried.” He grinned. “You’ve got this.”

“Yes. Yes, I do. Okay. I should get Petunia back to her owner. Wait. Where’s Petunia?” Carly turned in a circle. No Petunia.

“Shit.” Levi stared in the direction of the airstrip, which of course was fenced off to the general public.

Petunia was headed for the fence where there was a strip of grass and dirt. Mostly dirt. Carly ran for the pig, but Levi, with his long legs, quickly outpaced her. Petunia squealed as if she’d finally tasted the sweet freedom of her ancestors. Dirt, straight ahead. Could paradise be far behind?

Carly heard a woman screech, “My pig! Petunia, come back to me. Come back!”

“I’ve got this!” Levi yelled.

“I’ve got this!” Carly waved to the woman.

Levi reached the pig first, of course, but Carly was right behind him. He put his hands on Petunia but she snorted and, being wet, slipped out of his grip.

Carly tried to block her between them and got a hand on her once, but Petunia got away. Now she was slippery, wet and muddy thanks to the dirt. When she tried to make a run for it again, Carly threw herself on top of her. But it seemed that the harder Carly clung, the more Petunia wriggled. She squealed and snorted in a most unladylike way. And dear God in heaven, was Carly actually wrestling with a pig? Wearing her favorite Forever 21 summer dress?

“Aren’t you going to help me? Put the leash on her! Levi. Hurry! I’ve got her.”

But he simply stood over her, hands on hips, grinning ear to ear. He’d been joined by the pig owner on one side, and Mr. and Mrs. Lane on the other. Mrs. Lane had a worried look on her face, but the amusement in Levi’s eyes was impossible to miss. The owner bent to leash Petunia.

Levi grinned and held out his hand. “Didn’t anyone ever teach you never to wrestle with a pig?”

The sound of wood getting chopped and split draws me around to the side of the house. Knox is standing there with an axe, a chopping block and a pile of wood, looking like a poster for All That Is Man. He’s in a T-shirt while I stand there shivering under a blanket. Swat plasters it to his incredible muscles. He’s all hard everywhere I’m soft. I’ve never ben much of an athlete, never on any teams. Cooking and baking are my sports, and they tend to bring out my curves. He’s the exact opposite.

He looks up, wiping the sweat from his brow across his powerful forearm.

“Do you have my phone?” I venture to ask.

He shakes his head no, resting a hand on the blunt end of the axe handle. “GPS tracking. Had to get rid of it.”

“You got rid of it?”

He nods. I sigh in frustration. All around me loom tall trees and the ground’s covered with thick underbrush. Nothing in the vast wilderness remotely resembles a path.

He confirms my suspicions. “We’re the only cabin for ten miles in any direction. No people, just wolves, pumas and black bears.”

“Nice.” Great mobster hangout he has here. Wait, aren’t Chicago mobsters big on city stuff, like living and playing in the city where they work? “Why do you have a cabin all the way out here if you work for the mob?”

He exhales heavy, like I’ve asked him a question with a complicated answer. But he doesn’t give one. He doesn’t say a thing.

Studying his features, I try to read him because, really, who the hell is this man? He saves me, but kidnaps me. He ties me up, but tells me it’s to keep me safe. He touches me, but only after I’ve practically humped him first.

I look away, frustrated. I can’t read him at all, and it’s not just because the sunlight gleaming on his massive biceps is more than a little distracting. The man has a poker face.

“If you work for the mob,” I try again, “why did you take me away from some other mob guys?”

He scratches his temple, then admits, “I didn’t like what they had planned.”

“So you weren’t part of the plan to drug and kidnap me?”

“Not exactly.”

“Why did you bring me here?”

“To keep you safe.”

Exclusive Excerpt:

THE SHERIFF DELIVERED the divorce papers. It’s done.

My heart slams against my ribs. Did she finally leave that toxic relationship for good? I swerve to the curb to read Sophie’s text again. Maybe I read it wrong. Maybe my wishful mind added words that aren’t there.

The sheriff delivered the divorce papers. It’s done.

Halle-freakin-lujah! I’m elated for her, but also worried. That imbalanced jerk is capable of anything.

I’m proud of you! I reply.

I’m not proud of myself… I hope you’re on your way, she writes. Don’t be late.

I pull away from the curb and accelerate toward the country club. She shouldn’t be left alone now that Seth knows she’s serious.

A few minutes later I park next to her black-on-black Mini. I glance up. Sophie is running laps around the court now. Still the All-American athlete she was in school. Which leads to one conclusion—she’s going to hurt me. Again. I can practically feel the pain.

Watching her now, I can’t help but beam. She’s free.

I slide out of the car and grab the tennis racquet from my trunk. I don’t know why I let her talk me into these things. After sixteen years you’d think I’d be able to say no to her once.

I stroll onto the court just as Sophie rounds the corner and heads toward me. “Hey, Soph.”

She slows down as she reaches me. Her golden-cinnamon eyes latch onto mine. The breeze lifts her red hair. “You’re late, Pete. Again.”

“I am an advocate for delaying pain and humiliation.”

She grins and her dimples appear, reminding me why I never say no to her. She’s awesome. I chose well back in sixth grade. My best friend then, my best friend now.

“Dork.” She punches my arm.

I hold her arm gently. “Soph, are you okay?”

She shrugs. “I think so.”

We stare at each other for a few moments. “You did the right thing.”

She studies me. “I’ve never quit before. Ever.” The last word catches in her throat.

I fold her into my chest. “You did not quit. You tried. For much longer than you should have.”

Her taught body softens.

“Now what?” I ask.

“Learn how to breathe again. Care for myself. Begin to choose me first.”

I kiss the top of her head. “Welcome to the singles club,” I whisper.

She pulls back. “You broke up with Natalie?”

“No, but you know what I mean.”

She steps away, shaking her head. “It’s this cavalier attitude of yours about relationships that’ll leave you alone and unloved.” She walks toward her tennis bag.

I decide not to remind her where her idealistic notions of love have left her. “You love me,” I say. “Who else do I need?”

“Yes, I love both you and my pit bull,” she says as she draws her blood-red racquet out of the bag and executes practice swings. “But in my dog’s case”—she eyes me—”I had him fixed.”

My leg muscles spasm and my hand instinctively reaches down to protect my vitals. “You’re sick… And dangerous.”

She glances at me with her divine smile. “And you’re still the same snot-nosed twelve-year-old I met in sixth grade. C’mon, let’s play.”

About the Author:

Armenian by heritage, born in Iran, lived in Barcelona, and escaped New York until he found his home in Los Angeles, Ara’s first eleven years were both busy and confusing. The fruit salad of languages would slow down his genetically encoded need to tell stories. Until then, an alter ego would be required…

He received an engineering degree from California State University Northridge and earned his MBA from the University of Southern California. Today, he is a technology executive in the entertainment industry. True to the Hollywood life, Ara wrote for a children’s television pilot that could have made him rich (but didn’t) and nearly sold a video game to a major publisher (who closed shop days later).

But something was amiss until his wife read him the riot act. “Will you stop talking about wanting to be a writer and just do it?” So with her support (and mandate), and their two boys serving as his muse, he wrote stories.

Fascinated by the human species, Ara writes about choices, relationships, and second chances. Always a sucker for a hopeful ending, he writes contemporary romance stories. He is an alumnus of both the Santa Barbara Writers Conference and Southern California Writers’ Conference (where he also serves as a workshop leader). Ara is an active member of the Romance Writers of America and its Los Angeles chapter.

Blurb

Captor becomes lover…I’m a marksman. Mobster. Deadly assassin.

It’s true. I am all those things. I had cruel intentions. But everything has changed. My affection for her is unexpected. My love, unintended.

Unintended is a standalone in this series, and you can very much read it without any confusion. I have not read the first 3 books in this series, but I read Endurance where we first learned of Kieran and his intentions and let me tell you, I did not like him at all. So I was wondering how Georgia was going to pull this one off.

Well Georgia did not let me down at all; she made me fall in love with Kieran. She made me love Kieran and Westlyn, both individually and as a couple. In their worlds, things must be done a certain way; they must follow their families paths and continue onto with their heritages.

Kieran must a choose a bride as part of his duty and become future leader of The Order. But his family wants to form a treaty with The Fellowship; they want for Kieran to choose a woman from within The Fellowship to bind this treaty of peace and bring these two powers together for the greater good.

If you read Endurance, you know that Kieran kidnaps Westlyn and forces her into this marriage. And that is all we know, until now. And Georgia has given a new side of Kieran that I never saw coming. He may be The Order’s hitman, but he also has a soft side, an enduring side. And this is the side that he needs to show to Westlyn.

Westlyn was stolen from her family and is now being forced to marry someone she met, they very man her took her without permission. Westlyn isn’t some pushover; she refuses to become a weak submissive to Kieran. And if Kieran wants to show Westlyn that he’s not the ruthless man who stole her away, he’s got a lot of making up to do.

I love how Westlyn and Kieran’s relationship pans out. Watching these two grow together, shows their strengths and what they bring to one another. They knew when to push and when to pull back. I fell in love with these two so much.

“Love is like a rose. It blooms at the perfect time when it’s at its most beautiful, but only after being nurtured. That’s what our relationship needs: to be nurtured so it can bloom when it’s at its most beautiful.”

I love that we got to see what happened when Kieran captured Westlyn. For those that didn’t read Endurance, you won’t miss anything; but for those of us who did, it’s like a behind the scenes of what happened in Endurance. I was sucked into this story from beginning to end. There was a small part where we skipped a few months and I would loved to see what happened with Westlyn and Kieran then, but that’s truly my only gripe about this book.

If you love a great love stoy with an amazing HEA, this is the book for you!!

Excerpt
I don’t want this
to stop. “More.”

Her niece has been kidnapped and Denver and his blood brothers are the only people she can trust.

Slowly, numbly, she shrugged.  “I knew you were dangerous and relentless in pursuing somebody,” she whispered.  But a killer?   Her search for him had held a romantic element, and she knew it.  This guy was all edge—no romance.  “Am I in danger?”  Her voice quivered, but she had to know.

“Yes.”  He didn’t move.  Didn’t even seem to breathe.

She blinked.  Rapidly.  “From you?”

His eyes darkened.  “No.  The only thing I’m capable of breaking is your heart.”

Cold swam through her.  The arrogance.  “You think you broke my heart?”

His lip twisted.  “I know I did.”  His tone was low with what seemed like self-hatred.  Dark and raw.  “I’m sorry.”

Those words.  She’d needed those words and hadn’t realized how badly.  “Thank you,” she said, going on instinct.  “Then how am I in danger?”

“I’m in danger, and anybody close to me is free game for an enemy who will keep coming until I’m dead.  Until everything I care about, everything I dream about, is taken away and I want death.”  He looked back down at the computer, intensity pouring from him.

Whoa. Okay.  Denver didn’t have one bit of hysteria in him.  His words scared her, but curiosity still rose up.  “Who?”

“Irrelevant.  As soon as we get Talia back, you have to forget me.  Now.  Back to Richie.”

She could live forever, and she’d never forget him.  Not for one second had she been able to pretend he didn’t exist.  But he was right.  They had to find Talia, but he still needed to explain more.  She had a right to know everything.  “I have files on everything.”  She threw her pack at Denver, and he easily caught it before it smashed him in the face.

He didn’t so much as frown.  “Thank you.”

She swallowed.  They were in the same room.  After a year of hurting for him, he was right there in solid form.  More than solid.  She hadn’t imagined his hard body or intense charisma.  He owned every room he walked into with no effort.  She’d never met anybody like him, and here he was.  Her body tingled, her heart ached, and her mind spun.  Yeah.  Denver was definitely there.  “What now?” she asked, her eyes gritty and her throat scratchy.

“I’ll do some research.”  Slowly, numbly, she shrugged.  “I knew you were dangerous and relentless in pursuing somebody,” she whispered.  But a killer?   Her search for him had held a romantic element, and she knew it.  This guy was all edge—no romance.  “Am I in danger?”  Her voice quivered, but she had to know.

Her only semblance of peace comes from a new man in her life. When Gray storms back into the picture, her love life goes from incredibly complicated to apocalyptic.

“Your Highness, please back away. In fact, it would be best if you left the room altogether.” Felix put himself between me and Roberts. “Kelsey, I need you to push her down. Push her back down for a few moments. Marcus will be back soon and he’s going to take care of you. Being around those angels unsettled you. I don’t know if you noticed, but at the end of the meeting, your ward fell off. You didn’t have it on when Oliver shook your hand. He’s unbalanced and now you are, too. It’s like a contagion for someone like you. Oliver’s illness has called up your inner wolf and she’s angry.”

“Perhaps if I touch her,” Henri began. “I’m an academic. I don’t have the same connection she has with Marcus, but I might be able to help.”

“I’m not unbalanced.” It didn’t matter that my hands were shaking and they had been ever since I’d left the angels behind. “I’m going to talk to the wolf whether you like it or not. He’s been handling silver. It’s the only reason his hands wouldn’t have healed. Even then, a couple of hours would have done it. Unless the freaking silver he held came straight from Heaven. What about it, Roberts? How did you spend last night?”

The wolf was shaking his head. “I don’t know.”

That wasn’t an answer I was willing to accept. I was about to explain that to everyone when Chad stepped up and got in my face.

“I’m taking him out of here now,” Chad explained. “You’ll let me or we’re going to have trouble.”

I was ready for trouble. I was fairly sure I grinned, the idea of fighting a vamp lifting my spirits high. For the first time in what felt like hours, I went still. “You’re not going anywhere.”

Chad turned, his shoulders squaring, and I felt the world begin to bend around me. Chad belongs to one of the rarest classes of vampire—the magicians. As far as I knew, he was the only one walking the night at this time. He could form illusions so real you could taste food, feel imaginary rain on your skin, utterly believe whatever he wanted you to believe. I’d come up against him before. I might be one of the only people in the world who could see through him.

“It won’t work,” I said calmly as reality seemed to go dark and I heard the hissing of snakes all around me. “Do you not remember what happened the last time you pulled this shit on me? It took three tranqs to take me down. I don’t think you have those on you today.”

“I won’t need them.” Chad lifted his hand and the world shifted.

“Holy shit,” Casey said, climbing up on his desk. “What the fuck is happening?”

Snakes were happening. They were crawling from the woodwork, twitching and hissing my way. The fibers of the carpet beneath my feet lengthened and formed more snakes until they were a menacing mass, threatening everyone in the room.

Well, except for Chad, who had lifted his husband into his arms and prepared to take him away.

I let my wolf loose a bit. She knew this was all an illusion. That primitive part of my brain that Chad was accessing, the lizard brain that merely wanted to survive, was taken over by the wolf inside me. The alpha wolf didn’t want mere survival. She wanted to dominate, and that meant seeing past fear, trusting her instincts over what her eyes perceived.

The minute I opened the door, I felt her surge through me.

“I’m not letting you go. I can’t. I’m conducting a murder investigation, and I believe your boy here just became my prime suspect.” My hands twitched, eager for a fight, and I realized how long it had been since Marcus and I had thrown down.

Too long. Remember that whole thing about needing sex or violence to feed my inner wolf? Well, she was hungry and there was a whole lot of violence in Chad’s eyes.

I welcomed it. I could feel the need rise like a wave threatening to engulf me. This was why I had a trainer in the first place.

I gritted my teeth because Chad turned on his power. I could feel those fucking snakes climbing my legs and sinking their fangs into me. I refused to pay any attention to them despite the fact that I ached to rip the fuckers off me and toss them aside. To do that would have given the magician more power. If I bought into it, if I took my eyes off the only thing in the room that was real, I would end up like Casey, who was screaming like a girl.

“Let me pass, Hunter,” Chad said.

I stood my ground like the good Gandalf I was. Except I kind of wanted to shove my nonexistent staff right up old Chad’s ass, and then we would see if he sent snakes my way again.

The anger rose, rapid and quick, a flash fire coursing through me. I didn’t even realize when I had reached for the fireplace poker. All I knew was it was suddenly in my hands and I was going to use it. I could see myself shoving that piece of wrought iron right through his heart. It wouldn’t kill him. I would need wood for that, but then again, I didn’t want the fight over so quickly.

I raised the poker, ready to start.

“Stop it, both of you.” Donovan stepped in between us, but I didn’t care at that moment. I hadn’t felt this way in forever, not since Marcus had taken me in. I hadn’t been so out of control that I didn’t care who I hurt as long as I got to hurt someone. I would fuck up Donovan, too. All that mattered was seeing blood, feeling bones crush.

“You see, I told you she’s far gone and I can’t fix her anymore. I’ve called Gray and he has an idea of what to do,” Marcus was saying.

I wasn’t listening.

I started to bring the poker down Donovan’s way, but I was stopped in mid swing. A hand held my wrist, an arm going around my middle and hauling me back against muscled flesh.

“Stop it,” Trent growled in my ear. “You stand down right this second.”

Excerpt:

“Tamisia, the house is completely locked down and secure. All of the alarms are engaged. No one can get in without the whole perimeter lighting up and tripping a dozen sirens.”

And yet someone had.

Sia was all but certain of it.

And then, upstairs, a sharp female shriek confirmed her fears. The scream sounded worse than pained. The quiet that followed lasted not even a moment, then a baby started wailing.

“Oh, no.” Phaedra went chalk white. “That’s coming from Rosa and Angelina’s room.”

Sia nodded, grim. No wonder the young mother had seemed so afraid when she arrived a couple of days ago. Her nightmare was far from over. By the awful sounds of it, the man Rosa was running from had decided she wasn’t getting away so easily.

Cold dread swept her, seeping into her marrow.

The whole house was coming awake now, vibrating with confusion and terror.

All Sia heard was the piercing wails of the innocent little baby she’d left sleeping so peacefully just a short while ago.

Dammit, no.

Hot rage replaced the chill and her vision blurred into a red haze.

“Stay here, Phaedra. Call for help.”

“Tamisia, what will you do?”

She didn’t know exactly. There was no time for a plan. She only knew she had to act.

Without answering, she raced for the stairs, pausing only long enough to issue a sharp command to her friend. “The police, Phaedra. Do it now.”

Sia was immortal, inhumanly powerful, but she wasn’t a fighter. Never had been. She was a politician, shielded by a contingent of Atlantean guards who would fight at her bidding. But none of that mattered as she flew up the steps and past the open doors and terrified faces of the shelter’s other residents.

“Back inside, all of you. Don’t come out until I tell you to.”

No one balked at her hushed orders. One by one, the frightened women and handful of small children retreated, shutting their doors.

Pausing outside Rosa’s room, Sia caught the muffled sound of a gravely male voice behind the door. “It’s gotta be here somewhere. Keep looking! Santino said no loose ends.”

Suspicion pricked at Sia’s conscience. This didn’t sound like a violent ex-lover coming back to harm Rosa. This was something else. And no less dangerous.
