Everybody wants to be an actress, right?

The lights, the camera, the action? The fame, the money, the beauty and esteem. It’s all part of the package.

Unless, of course, you’re part of HIS films.

Ethan Cole was one of the best directors in the business until the day he disappeared. He was charismatic, gorgeous, intriguing and so brilliant that no other person could compare. People believed he’d simply quit. In truth, he’d gone underground.

I found him after being stolen from the streets. I was thrown into his new world, his fantasies, his decadent chaos, and I found myself fighting just to stay alive.

He seduced me while tormenting me.

Made me a star while keeping me hidden from the public’s eye.

He asked me one simple question before shoving me in front of the glittering lights and dark lens of his camera.

One question, requiring only one response:

Fuck or Die?

Reasons Behind The Director:

(pulled from her post directly and with Lily’s permission)

I’ve received several messages today regarding The Director and my choice to write a book I knew I wouldn’t be able to sell on major retailers.

So in answer to those wondering, I wrote Director with two purposes in mind. First, was to give a gift to my readers who truly love pitch black dark books. Like them, I read many genres, and love books that push the boundaries. I see the dark not just for the horror contained within it, but also for the light that can be found if you read between the lines. These are survival stories, and to me, people who choose to survive despite dire circumstances are people I admire.

The Director is also my small rebellion against those who want to impose their opinions on what other people choose to read. Not every book is for every person, and I understand that, but I also don’t believe the opinions of some should dictate the choices of others. The refusal to list certain books by retailers is theirs to make. I take no issue with that, but it doesn’t mean books like The Director won’t be written and won’t be read. It just means we find a new way to do so, both author and reader.

I knew going into this project that The Director wouldn’t be a return of investment on my time in writing it, but it was never about the money.

It was about the point that authors won’t be silenced on what they choose to write, and readers won’t be silenced on what they choose to read.

We all make our voices heard in one way or another. I simply chose to make mine heard through my Dark Exclusives.

1,001 Dark Nights 2017 Year in Review & 23 eBook Collection Giveaway

Hi everyone!

As some of you may know, I am the social media manager for the super awesome 1,001 Dark Nights Series. I am also the lucky gal who gets to interview all of the 1,001 Dark Nights authors for their newsletters.  It’s one of the most amazing and fun things I’ve ever been asked to do.  I mean to get a chance to ask some of the biggest authors out there questions is so flipping cool to a huge fangirl reader like myself.  To add to that, I contribute to these newsletters with a fun column called “A Note From Jillian”, which usually involves some sort of funny story that happened or a random real life connection that occurs while reading one of these novellas.

As the end of 2017 approaches, I wanted to take a look back at all that 2017 held and thought it would be great to share my fave questions from each interview with all of you! And, if you’re so inclined to read, the Note From Jillian is in each of the “read more” of the interview links.

And, to make it even more exciting, I have the entire 2017 e-book collection of 1,001 Dark Nights novellas to give away to one lucky winner!  Yahoo! (enter in the rafflecopter below)

Interview with Kristen Ashley:

I loved loved loved this story! Was it hard to decide on this prequel of sorts for your novella?

Yes. I was never certain that I was going to tell Daisy and Marcus’s story because I adore Daisy to distraction and I knew what precipitated them getting together and it was heartbreaking. I didn’t want to be in that place with Daisy. Not to mention, I wanted to be certain to do their story justice. They were my most-asked-for secondary character couple. I wanted to do it right for Daisy and Marcus and I wanted to do it right for my readers. We’ll just say Daisy never lets anyone down. Neither does Marcus. So in the end it worked out for everyone!

And just a note of thanks to Liz Berry for cheering on this decision. If I didn’t have her enthusiasm, I might have forever shied away from telling this story. Thank God I had her and my sister Erika supporting me writing it or it might never have been told!

I adore all of your series and how they all have a very different feel. Is it ever hard switching gears from your paranormal to your contemporary work?

Nope. I love this. It’s nice to be in the real world (as such, since it’s fictional :-)) and then pop into a straight-up fantasy where anything but anything can go. I’m always ready to hit a paranormal/fantasy when the time comes and when it’s done, just as ready to spend time in your average, everyday bar or coffee shop (average, everyday with the addition of really hot guys). So it’s perfect for me.

Interview with Carrie Ann Ryan:

Who would you cast as Holly and Brody in an Adoring Ink movie?

Ack! I’m always so bad at this. Hmmm…for Holly I would say a blonde Felicity Jones. You know her from Rogue One and I adore her and her strength in movies. For Brody? Probably Aaron Taylor-Johnson in his bearded glory. He played Quicksilver in the Age of Ultron movie and just won a Golden Globe for his work as well.

What is one of your favorite moments since joining 1,001 Dark Nights?

I’m such a fangirl, so all of my favorite moments include other authors. I love this group of talented women—and Chris! One of my favorite moments was probably sitting next to Kristen Ashley at RT16 and talking about 1001 Dark Nights and how many yummy books I get to read that I wouldn’t have before. She was so sweet and amazing and it wasn’t until a couple months later that I found out she was going to write Daisy’s story with 1001. I screamed. Ask Liz! LOL

Interview with K. Bromberg:

You’ve given these characters two fantastic names. Where do you find your character name inspiration?

I’m very particular about my characters’ names to be honest. I don’t have a rhyme or reason to how I pick them, but I have a list of names that I’ve overheard that I like. For instance, in another novel I write, I overheard a mom at my daughter’s kindergarten class call her daughter’s name and I was like, ‘That’s the name!’ I also go by the theory that I want a reader to hear my characters’ names and be brought back to the book somehow. So for instance, I’d never name a character Christian… because I know when readers hear that name, they automatically think of FSOG.

Speaking of inspiration…Ryder’s appearance had me totally drooling. Is there anyone you used as a visual muse?

Can I say my imagination? It’s funny because I prefer the clean-cut look myself but I know a lot of my readers enjoy the tattoos and beard. . . so in a sense, I combined both of our wants and created Ryder. Plus, as fun as it is to write the bad boy, it’s also super fun to write the nice guy too.

What would we find on the top shelf of your refrigerator right now?

Diet Coke. There’s always Diet Coke.

Interview with Joanna Wylde:

I loved Shade and Mandy’s story so much! How did you choose them for this novella?

As president of the Reapers Motorcycle Club, Shade has been a background character in several of my other books. I’ve had readers ask for his story, but until I got the idea for Mandy’s character I just wasn’t ready. Then I woke up one Saturday morning with Mandy’s whole life history in my head. I knew she’d be perfect for Shade.

When I started writing, I really thought they’d just be a short story but they kept talking to me. Then they grew into a novella, and now I think it’s safe to say they’re a full book, LOL. Sometimes the story doesn’t go quite the way you expected it!

The soft side Shade has toward Mandy is just fantastic. Is it ever a challenge to give a character those different layers?

I think it’s technically challenging as a writer to portray a character in such a way that the person in your head translates into someone the readers can empathize with, but the characters themselves tend to be very fully developed in my head. I don’t have to sit down and try to come up with a soft side or an emotional angle for my heroes… I don’t change who they are, either. They’re in my head, they’re real and they have their own personalities.

Once a character comes to life in my imagination, all I really do is throw them into a given situation and see what they do. Sometimes they surprise the hell out of me.

Interview with Larissa Ione:

With so many characters and layers to your world, I have to ask how you keep it all straight. Do you have a story bible or do you just keep it all in your head?

Both, but keeping it in my head is becoming harder and harder, so I’m actually slowly going through all my books and adding more detail to the existing bible, since I didn’t keep up with it.

If you could pick one song to be your theme song, what would it be?

That has always been a tough question. My go-to is “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere,” by Alan Jackson, and I’ve always been surrounded by music boxes and stuff that play “Lara’s Theme,” (From Doctor Zhivago, where my name came from…my family nickname is also Lara,) but you know what song always gives me a big lift when I need it? The theme song from Star Trek: Enterprise. Yes, really. Just give it a listen. It was totally my theme song when I was trying to get published.

Interview with Lexi Blake:

Is there a place in real life that was inspiration for the island of Loa Mali?

Kauai, Hawaii! One of my favorite places on earth. I love that you can go from gorgeous canyons to amazing beaches. I coupled that with some of the culture of southern India and you get Loa Mali.

You’re a new addition to the crayon box. What color would you be and why?

I would be the brand new ombre crayon. I start a deep blue, almost purple and gradually go lighter until you can color the sky with me. Because being just one color is boring….

Interview with Rebecca Zanetti:

In the second book, Ginny held herself very differently and is now a very strong gal. Did you know when you wrote her that she would evolve so awesomely?

In TEASED, Ginny was just mentioned as a woman who’d broken Theo’s brother’s heart. Then she shows up in TRICKED, and she’s all delicate and feminine and a little helpless…except Theo is the only one to see that she’s not quite that way. Then she shows her true colors (she’s a badass thief who can fight), and the hunt is on in TANGLED.

I know you write in many different genres but is there a genre you haven’t written in yet and would like to try?

I think a women’s fiction – part romantic comedy and part suspense – would be a lot of fun to write.

Interview with J. Kenner:

I loved this peek into Nikki and Damien’s life. It deals with a pretty rough spot for Nikki and I love that you showed that side of her. Why did you choose to write this particular slice of their life?

A couple of reasons. First, it made sense, because Hold Me comes on the heels of Anchor Me, which ends with, ah, um, stuff that happens a few months before Hold Me starts (she says, coyly avoiding spoilers), and I knew readers would want to see these moments in their lives.

But more than that, I wanted to show the challenges Nikki—and all women—face juggling working and being a mom!

I’m always curious about character names. How did you choose Nikki and Damien’s daughter’s names?

Oh, good question! Sometimes I don’t choose the names, they choose for me. But in this case, there are reasons:

For Lara Ashley Stark, the Lara is a name I saw when I was looking at Chinese adoption websites to refresh my memory as to the process for adopting (it’s been 10 years for me!) and to make sure I knew the details of how Chinese adoptions have changed since my daughter came home. I saw a little girl’s picture with the name Lara, and it grabbed me!

Her middle name, Ashley, is the first name of Nikki’s sister, who died before the series begins.

Their youngest daughter, Anne, is also named after Ashley (Anne was her middle name).

Interview with Jennifer Probst:

I love this entire series and love the design/building aspect in each book. If you could live in one of the homes you’ve written about, which one would it be?

I’m such an HGTV addict and enjoy binge watching all the shows with my family. If I had to pick one house I’d love to live in from the series, it would be the Pierce family mansion. After losing their beloved mother and matriarch, the mansion became the heart and soul of the brothers struggle to repair the breaks and tears in their relationship. It has a rich history. It’s also gorgeous! I pinned some inspirational pics on my Pinterest page if you want to take a peek, but think of a huge wraparound porch, soaring columns and high ceilings, magnificent gardens, an Infiniti pool, and a gorgeous cedar deck. It’s southern charm in a Northeastern setting, and surrounded by over 40 acres of woods.

Who would you choose to play Charlotte and Brady in a movie?

I think Amanda Seyfried would be awesome as the bubbly, stubborn Charlotte. And for my hot Latino Brady? I’d say either William Levy *YUM* or Jay Hernandez.

Interview with Tessa Bailey:

If you could dream cast Bree and Kyler, who would you choose?

Actress Tessa Thompson was my inspiration for Bree. She is beautiful and has this quiet, lovely grace about her that I associate with Bree. As for Kyler, I went searching for actual football players that matched the charming, sexy and devoted Kyler in my head. And I struck gold with Christian McCaffery, who now plays for the Broncos. Total swoon factory.

I know it must be bittersweet when you end a series. What series of yours would you love to go back and write one more book in?

All of them! But hmm. Maybe the Made in Jersey series. When I ended that series late last year, I was falling into a second stage of love with the town and it’s people. Since it’s set in a factory town, there are so many struggles and stories I could have created. I’ll just be over here lamenting my choices in peace.

Interview with Elisabeth Naughton:

If you could choose a theme song for this couple, what would it be?

This one’s easy. 🙂 “You Are Not Alone” by Lifehouse. Absolutely fits these two perfectly.

What book would be your choice for a beach read this summer?

I don’t get as much time to read these days as I used to. (All authors say that, don’t they? LOL) When I find time to read something other than what I’ve written, I usually veer toward books written by my awesome author friends. I recently plowed through Julie Kenner’s SIN series. (Warning…dark, sexy, and totally addictive.) I also happen to be a little OCD so when I find a series I like, I HAVE to read them all ASAP. A book I’m looking forward to reading this summer is Darcy Burke’s So In Love (I helped her plot this one and it’s going to be hot! Releases in August.) And if you’re a romantic suspense fan, I can definitely recommend Rachel Grant’s Tinderbox. Perfect beach read!

Interview with Laura Kaye:

I loved Wolf and Olivia together! They are so smoking hot. How did you choose them for this novella?

Yay! I love writing them! They just totally surprised me with their chemistry, playfulness, and connection. When I first starting planning the Blasphemy series, I knew Wolf was a voyeur, and I also knew I wanted him paired with someone not currently in the lifestyle. And Olivia was just so fearless in her willingness to give herself permission to have what she really wanted. I really love the way their romance turned out – so hot and sexy and fun!

I enjoy all of your different series and the different genres you write in. Do you ever find it difficult to switch gears?

No! Actually, I find it invigorating. I get to go from the playful sexiness of Blasphemy to the intense grit of the Raven Riders to even a whole other era with the historical fiction I write as Laura Kamoie. I feel like the different genres pull from different parts of my brain, and so switching gears isn’t as hard as I might’ve thought and makes me excited to return to each one.

Interview with Alexandra Ivy & Laura Wright:

I love that Blade is a bad ass but also so tender and protective of his young. Is it ever a challenge to write characters with such complex sides to their personalities?

Alex and Laura: It’s always easier for us to write characters who have more than one dimension. Weaving in conflicting goals gives an extra suspense to the story and makes for more believable characters. And when we write romance, the ending is more satisfying when our characters discover that there is someone out there who can help them heal or grow, even though they were determined to be alone.

Who would you choose to play both Blade and Valli if you had to cast them in a movie?

Alex: For me Blade would be Chris Hemsworth and Valli would be Felicity Jones.

Laura: Oooooo, so hard!! Blade.. I think a blond Chris Evans. And for Valli, I’m going with Lily Collins!

Interview with Donna Grant:

How do you choose your character names? Is there any name you’re dying to use but haven’t yet?

I use several sources for names. I’ve got a naming source book, I also use BehindTheName.com, and then I have a list of names that I keep when I run across something I find interesting. Sometimes it’s a matter of just liking a name. But…I have had a few instances where I’ve chosen a name and after a page or two of writing I realize it doesn’t fit the character. And oddly, it’s always the woman’s name I change. For DRAGON BURN, I sat on the name Gianna for years, waiting on the right time to use it. As soon as I knew I was setting the story in Italy, I had the name.

You always paint such a beautiful pictures of the surroundings your stories. Have you been able to visit a lot of the places you write about?

Thank you! That means a lot, especially since I think the one thing I need to continually work on in my writing is descriptions.

While I have been to Scotland a few times, I’ve not made it to Italy/Venice. Yet. I spent a few days immersing myself in everything about Venice before I started writing so I could hopefully incorporate enough of it within the story. One of my favorite parts was searching houses for sale to get an idea of what the inside would look like. I found about a dozen I wanted.

It helps that I’ve always wanted to visit Venice, so it was no great hardship to find all the places I’d like to see if I went.

Interview with Lorelei James:

As for the story, it was certainly unlike anything I have ever read and I loved it. What made you decide to write about such an interesting and different topic?

It interested me and living so close to Colorado, I had the opportunity to do hands-on research. The cannabis industry is still in its infancy. To the general populace and states where it’s not available even for medicinal use, the old school mentality about weed, pot, marijuana continues to exist and that’s too bad. The cannabis available now ain’t nothin’ like the old school stuff—haha.

If you had to choose a theme song for yourself, what would it be?

Believe It Or Not by Christopher Cross. It’s a happy little sing-along-in-your-car ditty.

Interview with Lauren Blakely:

All of your characters are so fun and interesting with all sorts of fun hobbies and fascinating careers. Is it ever challenging to build these character layers?

Thank you! Yes, it is challenging, but that’s what makes people stand out, in my opinion. I believe so strongly that our careers can be huge sources of satisfaction in life, so I always try to find interesting ones for characters, and then likewise to develop hobbies, traits and interests that drive them on. The world is a great and wondrous place with so many things to do. When I look at it that way, I always see that I have so many options in building characters.

Who would you choose to play Dylan and Evie in a book-to-movie adaptation?

Let’s cast a blonde Brittany Snow as Evie! In Pitch Perfect, Brittany has a certain crispness, but also a warmth that works for our matchmaker. For Dylan, can we put Armie Hammer in glasses and call it good?

Interview with Lara Adrian:

Trygg was such a great wounded hero and I was swooning hard-core over him. Is it difficult to give heroes the dual hard and soft sides?

I’m so glad you liked him! I think I’m just wired as a writer to create heroes who are tough and impenetrable on the outside, but who are wounded on the inside. That dichotomy really speaks to me as a writer—and as a reader.

All of your book titles in the Midnight Breed series are so cohesive. How hard is it to keep that going while coming up with new titles?

It has been challenging at times, but I’ve got a running list of ideas and every time I run across a word that evokes something dark or passionate or intriguing, I jot it down as a potential title idea. I’ve also moved away from the “Midnight” titles on my series’ next generation to allow myself more options when it comes to fun titles.

Interview with Heather Graham:

I’m always in awe of how many books you’ve written and how many characters you’ve developed over the years. Do you keep some sort of story bible or flow chart to keep track of it all?

Each summer with the trio that comes out with Mira, I always have a bible to keep the characters straight.

Do you have a favorite Halloween movie or TV show you love to watch around this time of year?

Yes, Hocus Pocus! (A very dear friend and incredible man and actor—Doug Jones—plays Billy Bones!)

What would be your theme song if you had to choose one?

Zombie.

Interview with Laurelin Paige:

I always feel a part of every story you write. It’s like a movie playing in my head when I read. Do you feel that way as you write them?

I do! My background is in theater, so I think it’s automatic for me to try and fill in scenery and dialogue in a way that feels like the story is unfolding around you instead of just in front of you.

Who would you dream cast as Nathan and Trish?

David Beckham was always my Nathan. I didn’t have someone as Trish, but let’s say a younger Monica Bellucci.

Interview with Kendall Ryan:

If you could cast Sam and Maggie for a movie, who would you choose to play them?

Oh my goodness, that is such a hard question to answer!!! I truly do not know. But I do know, they’d need to have that great, flirty chemistry, and work as both friends and as lovers.

What’s your favorite 90’s jam?

I love the 90s! I like everything from Nirvana and the Smashing Pumpkins to Janet Jackson!

Interview with C.D. Reiss:

Raven is a woman who knows what she wants and goes after it, unabashedly. I loved her for that. Is it hard to strike a balance between a forward female character who doesn’t come off as unlikable?

To be frank, if a woman who is smart and unapologetically ambitious is unlikeable to a reader, they won’t like any of my books. Almost all of my heroines are determined, loyal, and motivated. Sometimes the guy gets in the way. Sometimes he helps her get what she wants. But she always has to find a place for a man inside a life that’s already complete.

If you could cast Roman and Raven for a movie, who would you choose?

Roman would be Christian Bale. He looks so serious but when he smiles, the frame just lights up and you can tell he’s a guy who likes to have fun. He also looks stunning in a suit.

Raven would be Natalie Portman. She can play so tough and businesslike, but when she melts, she melts hard.

Interview with Kristen Proby:

Who would you dream cast for these two?

Rachel McAdams and Ryan Reynolds.

Your characters are all so wonderfully real and relatable. Do you ever find that kind of realness hard to write?

Not at all. They are real to me, so translating that to the page is natural to me.

Interview with Liliana Hart:

Who would you dream cast for Elizabeth and Cole?

Cole is a good decade older than Elizabeth, so I’d have to say Scott Eastwood would be perfect to play Cole MacKenzie. As far as Elizabeth, I love her so much. She’s such a badass, scoffing at traditional roles of how a woman should be during that era. She’s tough, she owns her own property, she shoots, and she wears pants. So I can easily see Kate Beckinsale in that role.

A penguin walks through the door right now wearing a sombrero. What does he say and why is he here?

“My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.”

Oddly enough, this would not be an uncommon occurrence in our house. We have 5 kids under roof and one of them has a penguin costume that gets worn way too often.

CAN’T GET ENOUGH Synopsis:

New York Times best selling author Gena Showalter returns with a sizzling Original Heartbreakers tale, featuring a rough, tough bad boy brought to his knees by… a kindergarten teacher?

The king of one-night stands…
To inherit–and destroy–his father’s business at long last, Brock Hudson needs a temporary wife. The ruthless ex-military heartthrob has always avoided romantic entanglements. Women are sweet, but vengeance will be sweeter. Or so he thinks. Only one woman will do, but the vulnerable beauty is more than he bargained for—sexier, wittier, and utterly irresistible.

The queen of the deep freeze…
After an abusive first marriage, Lyndie Scott has sworn off relationships. But still she longs for a child of her own. Turns out, the brawler who used to frighten her with only a glance is the answer to her problems. She agrees to his proposal, with a caveat: spend every night in bed with her, then walk away for good when it’s time to divorce. Even if she’s pregnant.

A marriage of breathtaking inconvenience…
As the days pass too quickly and the nights heat up, Brock battles a sense of possession and obsession. Will the former commitment-phobe convince his wife they’re better off together, or will she pack her bags and go?

My Review:

Can’t Get Enough is the newest release in author Gena Showalter’s The Original Heartbreakers Series.  I have really grown to love this series and this latest installment was, hands down, my fave.  I loved it!

This story involves two people who have been crushing on each other for quite some time from afar.  Both in a group of friends who have, over time, started pairing off, becoming couples.  The only two left?  Brock and Lyndie.  Two characters I adored, both separately and together as a couple.  Brock has a heartbreaking childhood that has led him to stay away from any sort of long-term, real romantic relationship.  He’s sexy and brooding but has one of the biggest hearts when it comes to those he loves and holds close. Lyndie is one of the most fun heroines I’ve read in a while.  She’s adorable and funny and I loved reading her.  She also has a heartbreaking past leading her to her own reasons for swearing off any sort of long-term serious romantic relationship.

Now, two people have never been more perfect for each other, and seeing how strong their attraction towards one another is, fate really needed to step in here…..and did she ever! What comes next is a fake marriage and a baby making plan that had me so excited because I knew these two would never be able to keep their feelings strictly to the surface like they planned.  Now, I won’t ruin anything for you but I will tell you that everything ends up so beautifully for these two and I was sitting back with a silly grin on my face after I finished reading.

I also have to say how much I loved seeing more of the group of characters we’ve gotten to know and love through the series.  This is one group of friends I really hope we get to see more of in the future.

Thank you, Ms. Showalter, for a sexy, fun, fabulous story!

Excerpt:

Montana, 1892

For all intents and purposes, Elizabeth MacKenzie should’ve died on a Tuesday.

The bank was stifling despite the beginnings of a blizzard outside. As it was almost closing time, they’d already shut the windows and the brazier was burning hot in the corner. Sweat was dripping in some very unladylike places. Not that anyone in Surrender would call her a lady, but it had never mattered much what other people thought.

There was a line of customers who’d waited until the last minute to do their business for the day. Most were shop owners who knew this would be their last chance to make a deposit before the storm shut everything down. And everything would be shut down. With luck, it would only be for a couple of days. At worst, it could be a couple of weeks.

She worried about the cattle and the ranch, but she knew her foreman and the ranch hands would take good care of everything. Even if she wanted to make it back home, there was no way to do it safely. The storm had already found Surrender.

She watched the gray clouds roll toward them through the western wall of windows, the mountains no longer visible and the snow swirling in several directions. The wheeze of the wind could be heard through cracks in the windows and door. The atmosphere in the room was fraught with tension. No one spoke, and everyone was wondering how long they had to see to necessities before things got so bad they had to find shelter in town.

There were only two tellers behind the counter, Leroy Henry and Miss Adelaide Murchison. Lizzie had seen the bank manager, Samuel Peabody, peek out from his office once and then close the door. Lord knew, if work was involved Samuel was the first to disappear.

Leroy barely came up to Elizabeth’s shoulders, and his body was so round he often gave the impression that he rolled from place to place instead of using his feet to walk. Miss Adelaide was unusually tall for a woman, almost a head taller than Elizabeth, and she had a long, hawk-like nose that made it seem as if she were looking down at everyone she talked to.

Leroy was a sweet man, but he worked at half the pace of Miss Adelaide. No one had ever called Miss Adelaide sweet. She was the meanest, most contrary woman Elizabeth had ever known. She’d take slow Leroy over Miss Adelaide any day of the week.

SOMEONE TO CARE by Mary Balogh

Berkley Bookmas Excerpt

Marcel Lamarr, Marquess of Dorchester and Viola Kingsley have both found themselves stranded by carriage woes in a country village where a fair is about to take place. Marcel had made advances to Viola fifteen years before, when she was the married mother of young children, but she had repulsed his advances. Now he persuades her to spend the day at the fair with him and the evening at a dance on the village green:

They joined the lines for a country dance, less vigorous, more intricate than the reel. He was an elegant, accomplished dancer, as Viola well remembered. He also had a gift for focusing his attention upon his partner, even when he was performing some figures of the set with another.

How wonderful it was, she thought as she danced, the cool evening air on her face and arms below her shawl, to be someone’s focus of attention, to be made to feel even for just a short while that she was the only person in the world who really mattered. It was not that she craved attention all the time. Far from it. She never had. But oh, sometimes it felt wonderful. They were surrounded by pretty, laughing young women, several of whom were darting half frightened, half appreciative glances at the formidable stranger in their midst, but he appeared to see no one but her.

It was all artifice, of course. It was all part of his appeal, and part of the danger. But it did not matter. She was not for a moment deceived by it. When the dancing was over for the evening, or perhaps even before it ended, they would return to their rooms at the inn, and tomorrow they would be on their separate ways and would very probably never see each other again. She did not mingle with the ton any longer.

So tonight—this evening—was to be enjoyed for what it was. A brief escape offered by fate.

All the sets were country dances or reels. They were what the villagers and farmers from the surrounding countryside knew and wanted. Viola and Mr. Lamarr—Marcel—danced two of them and watched a few more. But when one tune started he lifted a finger as though to stop her from saying anything, listened intently for a moment, and then turned to her.

“One could dance a waltz to this,” he said.

She listened too and agreed. But no one else was waltzing. The dancers were in line, performing steps with which Viola was unfamiliar.

“We will waltz.” It was an imperious command.

“Oh, hardly,” she protested.

But he was holding out a hand for hers. “I believe waltzing is something you and I never did together, Viola,” he said. “We will right that wrong. Come.”

“Marcel.” She frowned.

“Ah,” he said. “I like it—the sound of you speaking my name. But come.” He took her hand, and she did not resist as he led her about the green to the side nearest the church, where there were no people, perhaps because full night had fallen and the light from the lamps did not penetrate this far. Here there was heavy shade, though not total darkness. It was a clear night, illumined by both moonlight and starlight.

“You will waltz with me here,” he said. It was still not a question. He was offering her no choice. Neither, of course, was he coercing her.

“But people will see,” she protested.

“And?” She was aware that his eyebrows were raised. “They will see us dancing together. Scandalous goings on indeed.”

“Oh, very well,” she said, raising her left hand to set on his shoulder as his right arm came about her waist. How could she possibly resist? She had always thought the waltz the most romantic dance ever invented, yet there had been no such thing when she was young. There were still people who thought there was something scandalous about it, a man and a woman dancing a whole set exclusively with each other, face to face, their hands touching each other.

He took her free hand in his, listened a moment, and then led her into a waltz, twirling about the uneven ground of the village green, the sounds of voices and laughter seeming far away though they were only just beyond the shadows. She was very aware of his hands, the one resting firmly against the arch of her back at the waist, the other clasped about hers. She was aware that there was only an inch of space between his evening coat and her bosom, that their legs occasionally touched, that he was looking down at her, that she was looking back. She could not see him clearly in the darkness, but she knew his eyes were on hers. She could feel his body heat, smell his cologne, feel his magnetism. She could hear his breath.

She did not know how long it went on. Probably no longer than ten minutes. The dance had already been in progress, after all, when they started. It might have been forever. Viola forgot everything except the waltz and the man with whom she danced it in silence.

“Viola,” he said softly next to her ear when the music stopped. He did not immediately release her, and she made no move to extricate herself from his arms. “Let us go see what is behind the church, shall we?”

A churchyard, she supposed. But actually there was a sort of meadow beyond that, sloping downward to a river she had only half noticed this morning from the carriage window. A willow tree leaned over from the bank and almost touched the water. A humpbacked stone bridge crossed the river a short way to their left. It must all be very picturesque in the daylight. But so was the rest of the village.

They stood halfway between the low churchyard wall and the river, which winked in the moonlight, and listened to the slight rushing sound of water. The music began again, but the sound of it and of voices and laughter seemed far away now, part of some other world that did not concern them. His arm, through which her hand had been drawn, came about her waist to draw her to his side, and she wondered idly, not if she ought to allow it, but if she would. She made no move to bat his arm away or to take a step to the side. Rather, she leaned against him.

She would allow it, then. But she was in no danger. She knew what he was about. She understood. It did not matter.

He nudged her head onto his shoulder, lifted her chin with his long fingers, and bent his face to hers to kiss her.

My Review:

Dawn of Surrender is part of Liliana Hart’s MacKenzie Family series and is the last 2017 release in the 1,001 Dark Nights collection.  After finishing this novella, I have to say, hands down this is my all time favorite MacKenzie story.  It was simply sublime!

This novella is he prequel of the entire MacKenzie Family series and give us a look into how it all began.  There was something so special about this story.  Seeing Cole and Elizabeth’s relationship begin, grow, and turn into a marriage and foundation that started one of the most beloved book families was just so incredible.  I’m not sure what it was about this tale that drew me in so much…maybe it was the simplicity of the time it was set in or the pureness of a husband and wife learning one another and becoming a strong couple or maybe it was the combination of all of that.  All I know is that this story is still with me and I have no doubt will be for quite some time.

Thank you, Ms. Hart, for giving us this incredible tale.  I cannot tell you how much I loved it!

Whether you’re already a Liliana Hart fan or this is your introduction, I know you will love this novella!

So Over You by Kate Meader….Review, Excerpt & Giveaway

Synopsis:

Three estranged sisters struggle to sustain their late father’s failing hockey franchise in Kate Meader’s SO OVER YOU,Book 2 in the new sizzling Chicago Rebels series. Middle sister Isobel is at a crossroads in her personal and professional lives. But both are about to get a significant boost with the addition of a domineering Russian powerhouse to the Rebels…

Isobel Chase knows hockey. She played NCAA, won silver at the Games, and made it thirty-seven minutes into the new National Women’s Hockey League before an injury sidelined her dreams. Those who can’t, coach, and a position as a skating consultant to her late father’s hockey franchise, the Chicago Rebels, seems like a perfect fit. Until she’s assigned her first job: the man who skated into her heart as a teen and relieved her of her pesky virginity. These days, left-winger Vadim Petrov is known as the Czar of Pleasure, a magnet for puck bunnies and the tabloids alike. But back then…let’s just say his inability to sink the puck left Isobel frustratingly scoreless.

Vadim has a first name that means “ruler,” and it doesn’t stop at his birth certificate. He dominates on the ice, the practice rink, and in the backseat of a limo. But a knee injury has produced a bad year, and bad years in the NHL don’t go unrewarded. His penance? To be traded to a troubled team where his personal coach is Isobel Chase, the woman who drove him wild years ago when they were hormonal teens. But apparently the feeling was not entirely mutual.

That Vadim might have failed to give Isobel the pleasure that was her right is intolerable, and he plans to make it up to her—one bone-melting orgasm at a time. After all, no player can perfect his game without a helluva lot of practice…

My Review:

So Over You is the second book in author Kate Meader’s Chicago Rebels Series and I have to say, no one writes sexy brooding hockey players like Ms. Meader.  This book was fantastic!

If you know me, you know I’m a sucker for an enemies to lovers story.  Well, this was part that, and part second chance romance and the combo when written by Kate Meader is a total win!

Isobel Chase is trying to find her footing, along with her two sisters, in the male dominated world of professional hockey.  She has a new title in her late father’s hockey organization and as if being a woman wasn’t bad enough, the first player she is assigned to help get back on the ice is the one player she’d love to never see again. The brooding, sexy, Russian star player Vadim Petrov. It seems as though the feeling is quite mutual when the broody Russian player realizes he will have to work closely with the woman he would be happy to leave in his past.

To say the past they share is full of missteps, hurt feelings, and broken hearts would be an understatement.  Of course that makes their reunion that much better and the sexual tension and pent-up emotions lead to some serious heat and fun banter between them.  Man, can Ms. Meader write some freaking sexual tension.  I loved these two characters, especially as their defenses start to wear down and they both start to realize maybe being thrown together wasn’t such a bad thing after all.

I also have to say how much I love seeing the relationship between the three sisters grow as the series goes on.  Having two sisters myself, I know the ups and downs that comes with but I also know the silly fun times sisters share.

I can’t wait to see what Ms. Meader has in store for us next!

Excerpt:

“This little job is the difference between you playing and not. Dancing with the Stars, Vaddy baby. It’s where all the washed-up pros end up.”

Annoyed at his reaction to her, he skated away, throwing out over his shoulder, “I will be playing, Isobel. You will have no say in that. I spoke with Moretti—it is clear why you have this job.”

Her brow crimped. Naturally, it was adorable. “Please. Enlighten me.”

“He is new and no doubt under pressure to bow to the owners. You can write your own ticket.”

“If that’s the case, I’d just appoint myself as head coach and be done with it.”

“You are also conscious of what the fans and media think, so you are starting small. Really, you could have called or texted, Isobel. Buying my contract seems like a lot of work to bring me back into your world.”

“You weren’t my first choice. But luckily your poor play this season meant Quebec was happy to offload you.”

He ignored the brief stab. The last six months had been difficult. Isobel understood this, yet they could not resist these little cuts.

“I think you wanted to be closer to me. Just like before, right, Bella?”

A blush crept up her cheeks on hearing his endearment for her.

He would test her. Make her angry and emotional. Make her cry. Because angry, emotional criers were not the stuff of coaches. If she was serious about a career in the NHL, she would hear worse.

She would get him game fit. He would get her battle ready.

He continued to needle. “Yes, I think that must be it. It seems that the female owners of the Rebels would like to abuse their position and use the players for their personal pleasure. Your sister and Remy DuPre—that is interesting.”

“Is it?”

“Harper may have duped a Rebel player into her bed, but please don’t imagine you and I will be renewing our acquaintance in a similar manner.”

That got her attention, at last. Her creamy skin blazed, her crimson mouth twitched, and even from a distance he could see those melted-shamrock eyes darken. She looked like she wanted scream at him. Burst into tears. Slap his face.

Yes, Bella. Let us see if you can handle the barbs of every player, coach, and fan who will dismiss you. Let us see if you can handle me.

Fury powering her stride, she skated over, skidding to a halt mere inches from his face. As before, she was magnificent.

“You’ve found me out, Petrov.”

“I have?”

“It’s all an elaborate ruse. We bought your contract even though you really haven’t been performing well this season. Let’s face it, you’ve sucked donkey balls, Vadikins. But I convinced my sisters that I alone could bring you back to top condition. Make you a valuable asset to the team. I also made sure I’d be the only one working with you . . .” She leaned up on the tips of her blades, a balancing act that required great skill and remarkable ankle strength. Close enough that he could have slipped his tongue between his lips and tasted hers.

Her breath was a hot puff of temptation. “So we would have all this alone time.”

With that fiery gaze, she held his own.

Unerring.

Unflinching.

Until her mouth creased, and she broke into a laugh. He remembered that laugh. Just as before, it hit him right in the balls.

She used the edge of the iPad to poke him in the chest. “You thought I’d go to all this trouble to try to get into your hockey shorts, Petrov? I’m a team owner—I can have any of these Rebel boys with the click of my fingers!” She chuckled, clearly enjoying herself. “Despite what that supersized ego of yours thinks, the only performance I want from you is on the ice. Maybe if you spent less time carousing—”

“Carousing?”

“Yes, it’s nicer than calling you a club-hopping, vodka-sodden manwhore. Less of that and more effort on your day job, please. And don’t worry yourself that I’m interested in ‘renewing our acquaintance.’ I’ve had better lays with the Ukrainian delegation at the last Games.”

He had to say he enjoyed this sharp-tongued, quick-witted version of Isobel. But not enough to admit it to her.

“There is nothing you can teach me.”

“So sure, Russian.”

“I am positive.”

“We’ll see.” She skated back to the edge of the rink. “Again.”

Chapter One

Shayla

I wanted to tell her no. I wanted to lie to Gladys or Dorothy, whatever this sweet old lady’s name was seated in my section, and say we were fresh out of ranch dressing, and the little cup of it that came with her large garden salad was the last drop. If I didn’t and obliged her request, it would mean walking back over to the kitchen window I avoided like the plague and speaking to him—Sean “Stitch” Molina. The keeper of the dressings. The cook at Whitecaps Restaurant. He hoarded the ranch back there, and the only way to get more of it was with words.

And we didn’t do words anymore. Not as of eight months ago.

So, instead of doing my job as a waitress, I contemplated the dishonest route, which could very well get me fired.

Was I willing to roll those dice? Maybe. It might be worth a shot. My boss, Nate, could overlook my wrongdoing. He was understanding enough.

We’re fresh out of ranch, I could tell the lady. And all other dressings, for that matter. I am so sorry. Could I maybe get you another refill? Or something else not located in the kitchen?

I thought on this plan—it could work. Maybe she would believe me. Or maybe she would rethink her request and decide she no longer needed more dressing.

Help a fellow woman out here, Millie. Christ.

“I just need a little bit more,” the lady requested with a gentle smile. “Would you be a dear? I won’t trouble you for anything else, I promise.”

“Of course,” I replied, the response compulsively leaving my tongue. I couldn’t fight it. I couldn’t lie. I’d feel terrible.

Besides, this was my job. If someone requested more ranch dressing, I got them more ranch dressing, even if it meant speaking to the man I was completely and pathetically infatuated with, no matter how badly it hurt me to do so.

I gave the lady a smile in return before moving away.

My steps were slow as I weaved between tables and headed toward the kitchen. I tried to keep my head down, to focus on the tile floor disappearing beneath my feet, but I couldn’t.

I had to look.

Who was I kidding? I wanted to look.

As I approached, Tori was leaning close to the window that separated Sean’s domain from everyone else’s. She slid two plates of food off the ledge, commenting, “Looks good. Thanks, Stitch,” before walking off to deliver her orders, winking at me as she passed.

Sean only went by Stitch when he was here, I was assuming. I wouldn’t know for sure since I’d never spent any time with him outside of work. It was a nickname Tori and I had given him when he’d cut himself a bunch of times during his first week on the job, and he didn’t seem to mind being called that.

Back then, he didn’t seem to mind a lot of things, like listening to me talk and talk about anything and everything, putting my problems on him in between waiting tables, my stresses, my fears, needing a person to vent to and him being the only person I wanted to vent to because of the way he listened and looked at me.

No one had ever seemed so interested in what I had to say before.

Like what I was saying meant everything to them. Like it was a privilege just to listen.

And no one had ever looked at me the way Sean did—glances that only ever lasted a few seconds at a time, but those few seconds of eye contact—holy crap. I thought my skin was going to combust it would tingle and heat up so quickly. The man had a stare unlike any stare. Equal parts intense and intimidating. But his eyes, sweet mother of God, his eyes were unreal, this rich, golden copper color. And when they were on you, you didn’t just see that beauty—you felt it.

It was a two-punch combo that turned me into a puddle. No man had ever affected me that way before.

And that effect wasn’t going away. I was still feeling it.

Even now with us not speaking to each other, or rather, with me not speaking and him not listening, I still couldn’t get Sean out of my head. I missed what we used to have, yes, but it was more than that. It was so much more.

A man I barely knew, who seldom spoke, and who had never showed interest in me in that way had somehow taken hold of my heart and twisted it all up. I didn’t understand how it had happened, I just knew it happened.

Pathetic, right?

I reached the counter silently, which was a miracle considering how loud my heart sounded in my ears. Keeping my breathing quiet, I looked through that window and peered into the kitchen.

Sean had his back to me as he flipped burgers and stirred something in a pot. I allowed my eyes to travel the length of him, something I hardly ever let myself do anymore. We shared quick glances now, that was it.

Sean was well over six feet tall—way taller than me. His back was broad. His hair was long, a beautiful caramel color, and almost always pulled back; his arms were covered in tattoos and roped in muscle; and he had a thick, short beard that hid what I just knew was a strong jaw.

Sean was beautiful. And he was intimidating. Not just how he looked, but how he acted too.

He smoked. He drove a motorcycle. He never smiled. He rarely said a word. Everything about Sean said leave me alone, but eight months ago I couldn’t.

And eight months ago, I didn’t think he wanted me to.

I thought that was why he looked at me the way he did and listened so well. I wasn’t even nervous when I finally asked him out after hearing about a local party. I was excited.

I wanted Sean. I wanted to kiss him and touch him and God, hear his voice more. I had gotten so little of it. I wanted to do everything with him. And I thought we would. I thought we’d go to that party together as friends and leave as something more.

But Sean wasn’t interested in the more I’d been after. He wasn’t interested in me at all.

Now, that was perfectly clear.

Sensing me, or maybe he was finished minding the burgers and whatever he was stirring in the pot—I didn’t know for sure, since I was still letting my eyes wander—Sean spun around and stepped forward, snapping my gaze off his body in a panic. Our eyes met.

Mine widened.

His narrowed angrily, like I’d pissed him off and he hated me for it, and further hated me for catching him pissed off about it.

I didn’t understand that look, but no way was I asking about it. I was doing what I came over here to do, and then, hopefully, staying far away from this window the rest of the day.

Maybe I could convince Tori to put in my orders.

“My lady needs more ranch,” I informed Sean, swallowing thickly when my voice came out sounding stressed and distorted. “Could I get a little more for her?”

Sean’s gaze lowered to my mouth like he was waiting for more words, which didn’t make sense to me, until I considered the one word I left off he was most likely waiting for.

“Please?” I added.

His eyes lifted to mine and stayed narrowed. His nostrils flared. His jaw set.

I almost apologized for being polite and for not lying to that woman about our condiment supply. Things were so awkward now, I couldn’t stand it. I missed how easy this used to be.

Memories flooded my mind in an onslaught as I stood there waiting, and my back stiffened. I pictured Sean watching me with care and concern. I remembered the smiles behind his beard I used to catch, and the way his eyes would follow me through the restaurant and brighten when I would wave. We were friends. I wanted to scream at him for ruining that. I wanted to scream at myself for still caring. What was wrong with me? He had completely shut me out. We were nothing now. We were this.

But with a quick hand, Sean snatched a dressing cup off the shelf and ladled some ranch into it before I spoke another word. He sat the cup on the ledge, removing his hand before our fingers touched, and briskly turned back to the grill without giving me another glance.

“Thank you,” I mumbled at his back, turning before I lingered another second.

He shut me out. I needed to do the same to him.

I delivered the cup of ranch to the sweet old lady, picked up a check for a table who didn’t wait for change, and took care of their tab at the register. Then because I didn’t have any other tables needing anything from me at the moment, I moved to a vacant booth far away from that window and busied myself filling ketchup bottles.

The next time anyone needed extra dressing, I’d send Tori.

Three Days Later

I am getting one of everything.

Twisting the dial on the radio, I quieted the music I was listening to when the truck ahead of me pulled forward, allowing room for my Civic to squeeze up next to the speaker.

Mouth already salivating, I rolled my window down.

“Welcome to Taco Bell. Can I take your order?”

My stomach growled as I surveyed my choices.

I eyed the fiesta taco salad. The quesarito. The never-ending list of combos and the specialty options. Everything intrigued my taste buds.

I stuck my head out the window and directed my order at the speaker. “Can I have a number six, please? Chicken supreme with a soft taco? And a Mountain Dew.”

“That’ll be six fifty-seven at the second window, please.”

I couldn’t pull forward yet, so I kept my foot on the brake, and just as I was about to roll up my window to keep the cool March air from filling up my car any more, a song I knew and loved began playing low through the speakers.

I had no idea what the name of the song was or who sang it, but I knew every single word. And this was not a song you didn’t crank up and sing along to with your windows down.

Fingers twisting the dial until music poured out of my car, I started moving my hips in time with the beat and smacking the steering wheel, eyes closing and fingers snapping as the lyrics left my mouth.

“Oh oh oh oh oh oh,

You don’t have to go, oh oh oh oh oh

You don’t have to go, oh oh oh oh oh

You don’t have to gooo.”

The drum kicked up. I shook my head and felt pieces of my short, dark hair lash against my cheeks.

The girl giggled through the speaker.

Smiling and not feeling one bit of shy about the audience I was entertaining, I leaned halfway out the window and sang to her as loud as I could, reaching and pointing like she was front row at my concert.

“Ay ay ay ay ay ay

All those tears I cry, ay ay ay ay

All those tears I cry, oh oh ah ay

Baby, please don’t goooo.”

She laughed harder this time, whooping and cheering me on.

“How’s that?” I asked. “Think I got a career in singing if all my other options fall through?”

“You bet!” the girl yelled. “That was sick!”

Giggling at myself, I sat back in the seat and turned the volume down halfway, noticing through the windshield the space between the truck in front of me and the car in front of it.

My eyes narrowed. I beeped twice. I was starving, and this was not the time to be messing around. What was this person doing?

The truck jerked forward, gears grinding over the music, loud enough I actually cringed. It was an old, beat-up Chevy, covered in dirt and rusted all along the back, with most of the paint chipped off and the muffler barely hanging on by a thread. The well loved and very well used vehicle was probably on its last leg, as was the worn smiley-face sticker half peeled from the bumper, leaving only one eye and half a mouth showing.

That thing had definitely seen better days.

Staring at all that rust, I had a moment of panic when I imagined the truck dying on its owner and blocking my path. Come hell or high water, I’d get my chalupas. Though I really didn’t feel like stepping out of my car and walking inside where the lunch rush sat. I was wearing sweats covered in bleach stains, a baggy sweatshirt, zero makeup, and not a lick of dry shampoo. No way was I presentable for the public yet.

This was why God invented drive-throughs and curbside service—so women like me could sleep in on their days off and rush out the door when a hankering hit without even bothering to glance at themselves in a mirror.

But when the truck made it up to the window to pay without a hitch or stall, most of that panic left me.

And when the driver pulled away after collecting their order and turned out onto highway, all of that panic left me.

I rubbed my hands together. Come to Momma.

“Hello!” I greeted the young girl with a smile and a wave, feeling like we had one of those lifelong friendship connections since I’d just serenaded her.

Grabbing my bag off the floor in front of the passenger seat, I dug around for my wallet.

“No need for that!” she said, turning my head and pausing my search. “That guy just totally paid for you. God…I love it when that happens. It doesn’t happen enough. It’s such a treat!”

I sat up and looked at her more fully. “What? What guy?”

“The guy in the truck.”

“Really?”

Nobody had ever done that for me before, and I used drive-throughs a lot. Well, shit on my head. My first random act of kindness, and I had rushed the poor thing along.

I suddenly felt bad for beeping.

“Yep,” the girl said, smacking her gloss-covered lips. “He asked me how much your order was and gave me enough to cover you both. And he wasn’t bad looking either.”

I leaned closer to the window, my interest in this mystery man spiking off the charts. “Yeah?”

“Oh, yeah. He had that dark, smoldering look about him. Real sexy.”

Nice.

“Did he say anything? Leave his number on a napkin or something?”

“No.” She shrugged. “Just paid for you and left. He acted in a rush.” The girl turned to pack up my order.

Huh.

If he was interested, he would’ve gone beyond just paying for my food. I would think he would’ve at least waited before speeding out of here—at least pulled over and given me opportunity to thank him.

Maybe he was just doing a good deed?

Letting myself think on that, I smiled and took my drink. “I’d like to pay it forward. How much is the person’s order behind me? I’ll take care of them,” I said while blindly digging my wallet out of my bag.

“Really?” The girl clapped her hands together and squealed. “This is awesome! And they say there’s no good people left in the world.”

I laughed and made a face like I was agreeing with her, though I really didn’t. I knew a lot of good people. Dogwood Beach was full of them.

And I was blessed to have a lot of those people in my tribe, supporting me, giving me friendship and love, and others, not necessarily in my tribe, but around me enough I got to see their good.

Still, I understood this girl’s excitement. It wasn’t every day a complete stranger did something out of sheer generosity. And selfless to boot. Who didn’t stick around to take credit when credit was due? That was practically unheard of.

It’s funny how a simple gesture can affect you. But kindness was powerful that way. It not only had the ability to alter moods, but it was also infectious. People wanted to spread that good around once they got it put on themselves.

Hell, I was doing it. Maybe the person behind me would do it too, and so on. We could all pay it forward.

Smiling, I thought about that mystery man in the beat-up truck, wondering if he knew just how inspiring he was. How good he was. I hoped someone was telling him.

After safely securing my bag of deliciousness in the front seat, I got the total of the order from the car behind me, paid, got my change, cranked up my stereo again, and sped off, leaving my window cracked so I could serenade Highway 355.
