Goodreads Synopsis

Introducing book 1 in the new Checkmate Duet Series from a secret duo of
bestselling authors! This friends to lovers romance will have you swooning and laughing from
the first to the last page! Are you ready to play the game?

Drew Fisher
is the type of guy every girl wants.

Noble police
officer by day, charming prince by night.

He has no
idea the effect he has on women, especially me—his little sister’s best
friend.

I’m the
blonde Southern belle who lives up to the cliché, except I have my own quirks. I’m smart as a
whip, can change my own oil, and recite The Pledge of Allegiance backward, but he doesn’t see
that girl.

It’d be easier
to forget him if he wasn’t my roommate and if the first thing I saw in the morning wasn’t his
shirtless body covered in tattoos. I’ve crushed on him since the day we met, but he’s made it
perfectly clear where we stand. Just friends.

I know I
need to move on and accept that his feelings will never be mutual, but every day he smiles at
me, I’m left dreaming of what if.

He has girl
issues, and I’ve got a crush I can’t deny.

We’re
friends, but I want more.

One drunken
hookup leaves us with much more than a platonic friendship. Pretending it never happened
proves to be more difficult than anticipated.

A crazy
ex-girlfriend, a dangerous war of stolen glances, and passionate kisses leads to the most
reckless battle yet. I won’t be a pawn in his game, but I’ll play by his rules if it will show him I’m
the one worth breaking them for.

Checkmate,
Prince Charming.

*Recommend for ages 18+ due to sexual content and adult
language.*

**This is
book 1 of 2 in the Checkmate Duet Series–a friends to lovers romance. Highly recommended to
read the Checkmate Duet, This is War and This is Love first, but not necessary. This can read
as a standalone duet.**

PROLOGUE

COURTNEY

One day after the wedding…

Once upon a time, in a faraway land, lived a queen who ruled her own kingdom. She
didn’t need a king beside her because she was confident, strong, and smart without one. She knew men only brought heartache and there was no time for that, but if there ever was a man who could stand beside her, he’d be the strongest, smartest, most protective guy she could ever ask for. He’d be her best friend and The One.

…Excuse me while I drown in my own tears.
There is absolutely, positively no way a guy and a girl who live together as roommates could ever become anything more. I hoped it would, but after several clear-as-day hints, I’ve come to terms that just friends is all we’ll ever be. He doesn’t see me the way I see him.
And he was Drew Fisher. My best friend’s older brother. Cliche, I know. I remembered the day I first met him. I’d nearly broke my face when I walked into a beam and his cop uniform had been stripped off in my mind. He’s built like a rock, his chest and back are covered in ink, and his long strands of dark hair are just asking to be pulled. You can see his
chiseled jaw under his five o’clock shadow, which gives my girl parts all kinds of weird tingly feelings and don’t even get me started on the handcuffs in his duty belt. Every time I see them, I
want to handcuff myself to him.
Okay, that might sound a bit over the top and maybe even obsessive, but I swear I’m not. Drew’s been my roommate for over a year, his sister, Viola, is my best friend, and just married his best friend, Travis. Not to mention, Travis is also my boss at King Marketing, where Drew
stops by to bring me lunch on a weekly basis. So we’re linked together in more ways than one and it’d be way too complicated anyway. I know this. I’ve reminded myself of this several
dozen times.
But that doesn’t mean my heart has accepted the memo. I can’t help the way I feel for him and I’ve tried dating other guys to get over the pathetic crush I have, but so far it hasn’t worked.
Nothing has, actually, so I just suffer in silence as I watch him give his heart to a girl who absolutely, positively does not deserve him in any way.
Mia Fucking Montgomery.
She’s the classic tall, skinny, dark-haired goddess who thinks she rules the world and everyone in it. I don’t get what Drew sees in her—okay, maybe I can—but too bad her attitude is as ugly as her botched boob job. He doesn’t see her for who she really is—conniving, manipulating,
cheating, lying whore. I don’t typically shame other women for being outspoken and confident, but Mia is the exception, and I don’t even feel bad for hating her skanky guts.
All right, that might sound like jealousy and all considering I just admitted to having the biggest crush on one of my best friends, but those aren’t feelings of jealousy. Those are feelings of disdain. Take one look at Mia Montgomery and you’d feel the exact same way.
Too bad Drew Fisher is blind as a fucking bat.
All feelings aside, I hate that she’s hurt him more times than I can count and that he’s taken her back every single time. He’s the sweetest guy I’ve ever met and gives more second-chances
than she deserves.
I can’t help but feeling like maybe, just maybe one day he’ll open his eyes and see what’s been in front of him the entire time. I hate that he sees me as his sister’s best friend or the southern redneck girl who prefers cowgirl boots over high heels or the loud-mouthed one who yells at the TV during football season. I’m just one of the guys to him and even though I’d rather be his friend than nothing at all, I can’t help that feeling of what if.
Coming to terms with the way things are between us comes to a complete halt the moment I wake up Sunday morning. Blurred flashbacks of the night before surface and I can’t tell if they
were all a dream or if…
I peel my eyes open and see the sun glaring through the window. I hate that damn sun. And fuck that window, too. Jesus, I feel like I’ve run a 10k marathon last night. My feet are more than
likely swollen from wearing those damn shoes Viola made the bridesmaids wear and I can feel the pins jabbing into my skull from having my hair done. Being Viola’s maid of honor was a blast, but between the over-drinking and the too-tight shoes, I’ll be paying for it for at least a week.
It takes me a minute to clear my eyes and realize I’m not even in my own room. I’m in Drew’s room, which could only mean one thing.
Last night wasn’t a dream.
My body stiffens because I’m too nervous to look and see if Drew is lying next to me. My heart is pounding and my head is aching from the excessive alcohol I drank last night. I don’t normally
binge drink like that, but it was my best friend’s wedding reception with an open bar, so it’s not really my fault.
Okay, yes it is.
I shuffle around as quietly as possible, gripping the sheet in my fist as I turn slightly to check if I’m alone or not. Before I can look, I feel the cool fabric rub against my bare nipple. Glancing down, I see I’m completely naked and groan inwardly to myself. Searching the floor, I don’t see any of my own clothing. Fuck me.
My heart is racing so hard, I’m sure if Drew is next to me, he can feel the vibrations against the bed. If last night wasn’t a dream, and I’m naked in his bed and he’s next to me…stop
panicking
, I tell myself. Maybe it’s not even Drew. Maybe I brought another guy home, and I was too drunk to realize we went into the wrong room. That has to be it.
Drew’s probably asleep on the couch right now waiting to curse me out for all the damage I’ve done.
Feeling a bit calmer, I decide it’s now or never. I need to take a good look at the strange guy next to me and kick him out before he thinks we’re a couple now or something. I don’t typically do one-night stands, hell I’ve barely done relationships since my ex-boyfriend, Toby, broke up with me over two years ago. The last thing I’m looking for is someone to have casual sex with,
well unless…
No. I can’t go there.
Pulling the sheet up over my chest, I turn over as slowly as possible to avoid any movement on
the bed, and prepare for what I’m about to see.
Or rather, who I’m about to see.
Blinking, needing to clear my vision once again just to make sure I’m seeing him correctly, I nearly gasp aloud. There’s no fucking way. This has to be one of those dreams within a dream type things because holy fuck.
I’m in Drew Fisher’s bed with Drew Fisher.
How the hell did that happen?

Read a sneak peek of BEHIND CLOSED DOORS:

“Can I ask you something?” she said, drawing my attention away from the monotony on my computer screen. I looked up to find her eyes dead set on mine. It was unnerving.

She usually tried to avoid direct eye contact with me. Maybe I intimidated her. Perhaps she found me attractive and the idea of lusting after her boss bothered her.

Believe me, it bothered me too.

In a very physical way.

“Go ahead,” I answered, unwilling to break the intimate connection she’d started.

“When you saw me… at the club that night,” she said, her eyes wavering just slightly. “What was it you saw in me? I mean, was it just the clothes?”

My eyebrows furrowed in confusion. Even though I’d said we’d never speak of what happened that drunken night two weeks ago, I saw something in her eyes that needed an answer.

That needed something more.

“Why are you asking?”

“It’s nothing, sorry. I’m being stupid,” she backpedaled, as she began fiddling with the hem of her skirt.

Looking back at our few interactions, I suddenly noticed the difference in how she’d acted today. Her normal never-ending stream of word vomit was there, but behind it, there was an internal struggle going on. The hemline wasn’t the first thing she’d fidgeted with. I’d watched as she’d pulled at the collar of her shirt and then, as if she’d realized what she had done was wrong, quickly lay it flat again.

“Does this have something to do with the way you’re dressed today?”

Pink tinged her cheeks once again.

“You noticed?”

I simply nodded, not trusting myself with words in that moment.

Because I’d more than noticed. It’d been damn hard not to think about anything but.

“A gift from my boyfriend,” she replied. “He said my old clothes didn’t fit in with our new life style. It was a very generous gift,” she added, never forgetting that politeness she’d no doubt been taught since birth.

“But?” I questioned, waiting for her to continue.

“But… I don’t feel like me anymore,” she finally admitted.

“And I’m guessing the night in the club was another gift of his as well?”

It was her turn to nod.

I could see the indecision and worry gnawing at her. Someone like her, sweet, honest and good… she was meant for better things than a life with a man who didn’t appreciate her.

Leaning forward, I made sure she saw the sincerity burning in my eyes as I spoke. “That night in the club, I’ll admit, I noticed the dress first.”

She opened her lips to speak but I held up my hand to stop her, wanting to make my point.

“And today, when you walked in, I couldn’t help but give a second… or third glance at the way that new skirt hugged your ass.”

Her eyes widened at my blatant honesty.

“So yes, the clothes may grab my attention for a moment or two, but the fact that I’m still interested, two weeks later? That’s you, Cara. That’s all you.”

And just like that, I’d crossed the line.

I’d hit on an employee.

And there was no going back from that.

My Peace by Courtney Cole…Release Day Blitz & Review

My Peace, the continuation of Pax Tate’s story from IF YOU STAY, is live today!

Happy endings must be worked for.

Pax Tate used to be an effed up asshole, but you’d never know it now.

He’s got a sexy wife, their own little family, a cozy home, and a successful career.

Everything is perfect.

Until his past rears its ugly head.

Pax will do anything to protect his family,

even if he destroys himself in the process.

**BUY ON AMAZON **

Note from Courtney:

Dear Readers,

I announced recently that I based the character of Pax Tate on my twenty-two year old son, Gunner.

Gunner is a drug addict. He’s currently in rehab, and he’s doing well, but it’s been a long roller-coaster of a journey to get here.

Pax’s personality traits are Gunner’s. Even though Gunner’s moods have been mercurial because of drugs, deep down he is strong and funny, charming and sweet. I wanted that to come through in Pax.

(Of course, when I’m writing the “sexy time” scenes, I’m definitely picturing Jensen Ackles or Alex Pettyfer in my head. 🙂

Pax’s heart is as deep as the ocean, even though sometimes, he can be an asshole. I think readers realized that in IF YOU STAY, and that book sat on the New York Times for twelve weeks back in 2013.

Readers have asked for more Pax over the years, and it is only now, that I wanted to add more to the story. It is only now that I have come to terms with the fact, based on my son’s own life, that happy endings must be worked for.

I hope you love Pax’s story.

I wrote it with the ending I want for my own son, one of hope, of happiness and of good health.

I will give anything to make that true.

From my pen to God’s ear.

I hope you enjoy the story. Thank you for reading!

XO,

Courtney

** BUY ON AMAZON **

My Peace is a perfect follow up to If You Stay.  And you MUST read If You Stay in order to truly understand this novella.
If You Stay hit close to home for me, so I knew immediately this novella would be the same way.  But also knowing now that Pax is based on Courtney’s son, it just makes the story all the more real and raw.
My Peace shows that an addicts struggle is never over and lasts a lifetime.  And it takes the love of everyone in their lives to help them overcome any new struggles they may face.  And even those ugly demons that sometimes try to worm their way back in.  This book had me in tears, some ugly cryng at times. For some people it won’t hit close to home but it will cause you feel everything.
I love how Courtney interwove a few different story lines into this.  But also gave you insight into addiction and how even a small situation can cause any recovering addict to possibly relapse.  Courtney tells this story from both Mila and Pax’s POV; these two face new struggles each and Courtney really proves how strong their love is.
I can’t praise Courtney enough for even writing this story, knowing how difficult it had to be.  But I love that she did and there aren’t enough “thank you’s” to show my gratitude.  It gave us readers more of Mila and Pax, something we can never get enough of.  But it also gives readers more of an insight to what and addict and their loved ones go through.  It doesn’t really get any more real, raw or more life like than this.

As she stepped up to the lane again, he should’ve tossed another cocky taunt at her, some barely disguised innuendo, but he could only watch. Despite her protests regarding bowling, they were having a good time. His head had been quiet so far. Not once in the last hour and a half had he thought of that fucking cell in Iraq. The crowd around him, the deafening noise, hadn’t triggered anything ugly, because he was lost in her, in keeping her smiling and laughing.

By the fourth game two hours later, they both played so lousy he laughed every time he stepped up to the lane. Cassie, though, was ahead by five points. This game would decide who won his little bet.

As it turned out, his ball curved off into gutter. Leaving all ten damn pins still standing.

Cassie let out a victorious squeal behind him, meeting him at the ball return with a grin plastered across her face and her chest puffed out with pride. She stepped into his personal space and poked him in the chest. “You. Are. Mine. I won, fair and square, soldier boy.”

He leaned down and touched his nose to hers. She might have won, but he could still pull a few punches of his own. “I’ve always been yours. Believe me, princess, I’m going to enjoy letting you have your way with me.”

That got her. Cassie froze, heat flaring in her eyes. A heady shiver moved through her as she stared up at him. “So, what now?”

“Well, that depends on you, but”—he leaned his head beside her ear and lowered his voice—“I’m dying to peel you out of those jeans.”

Her breathing hitched. When he met her gaze again, she stared at him for one tension-filled moment, grabbed his hand, and marched off, tugging him behind her. He followed in silence out of the bowling alley and into the quiet of the night. She didn’t say a word or even turn to look at him as she led him to where his brother’s car was parked at the back of the lot. Once there, she pressed him against the driver’s door. Hands braced on his chest, she lifted onto her toes and captured his mouth, all fire and determination. She pushed her tongue inside, her kiss hot and desperate, and he was pretty sure they were both shaking.

As suddenly as she’d kissed him, she released him, pausing a moment to catch his gaze. Hers was filled with the same need that had him tongue-tied. Then she moved around to the passenger side of the car.

His fingers shook as he dug his keys from his pocket and hit the fob. Once the doors unlocked, she climbed inside. When he got in after her, she reached over and threaded her fingers with his. “You should get this car moving, because in about two seconds, I’m going to climb into that seat with you. I need you. I…”

She shook her head, glancing over at him, vulnerability rising in her eyes.

She didn’t have to say the words. What she meant hung in the air, igniting a solar flare between them. She needed what he needed. Something soft and slow. A complete meshing of bodies. He had a feeling they really wouldn’t be sleeping tonight. Not out of physical need, but the soul-deep desire to be as close as possible. To make up for lost time. Three years apart was a lifetime, and the need in her eyes, mixing with the tears hovering at the edges of her lashes, told him she thought something similar.

He squeezed her fingers, then pushed the button to start the car and moved their combined hands to the gearshift. “Me, too, baby. Me too.”

Excerpt Reveal….Entice Me by J. Kenner

julie_enticeme300dpi360x576From New York Times bestselling author J. Kenner comes a sensually seductive novella starring fan favorites Damien Stark and his wife, Nikki Fairchild.

Includes a special preview of Anchor Me, the highly anticipated fourth full-length novel featuring Nikki & Damien as they begin the next chapter in their life together.

I didn’t understand passion until I met Damien, the man who turned my world upside down and swept me off my feet.

And though our life together feels perfect, we can’t escape our secrets–and the danger that continually threatens to surface.

But for one night, I seek a respite. A birthday wish for my husband, my lover, my friend—one absolutely perfect night.

It is my most ardent wish.

And I only hope that it will come true…

He bends down so that his lips graze my ear. “Dance for me, baby. Right now.”
”Is that what you want?” I ask. “To watch me dance? Because I have something else in mind.”
His brow rises. “Do you?”
“Mmm,” I say, then start humming as I pull out my phone and find my current favorite song on my workout playlist. A little fast. A little raunchy. A lot fun. I click the button to send it through our sound system, and when the music starts, I press my hand to Damien’s chest and jauntily strut forward, forcing him backward to the padded bench that is intended as a place to sit and wait for the elevator. Right now, I have a different purpose in mind.
“I’ll dance,” I say, doing a shimmy and pulling off my T-shirt in the process. “I’ll even do a stripper dance,” I add. “But I don’t do solo shows. I require full participation.”
“Do you?”
“Absolutely,” I say, turning around so that my back is to him as I shake and shimmy in time with the music and very, very slowly ease my skirt off.
When I turn around, I’m dressed only in my bra and panties, and though I should feel silly, I don’t. Maybe it’s the alcohol. Maybe it’s the lingering high from fucking him in the limo. Maybe it’s the heated way that he’s watching my every move.
Maybe it’s the simple fact that I love my husband.
Whatever the reason, I’m enjoying showing off, turning him on and getting turned on in the process. And as I think that, I slide one hand over my bra and the other down my abdomen to cup myself over my panties.
I have my eyes closed, and the music’s loud, but I still hear Damien’s sharp intake of breath. I figure that’s as good a cue as any, and I open my eyes and strut toward him, then reach out a hand to pull him up.
He complies, amused, and I do my own version of a pole dance, with Damien playing the role of my pole. Up and down, stroking and teasing, shimmying and shaking. It’s a little erotic and a little silly, and by the time I have my bra off and am about to step out of my panties, I’m both desperately wet and giggling furiously.
I bend over to untangle my panties from around my ankle, and when I do, my giggles turn to squeals as Damien scoops me up and tosses me over his shoulder. I pound uselessly on his back, then cry out when he pitches me unceremoniously onto the bed.
“What are you–?”
“Shhh.” He puts his finger over his mouth, then strips off his own clothes. And though he doesn’t add any dance moves, I can’t deny that I enjoy the show.
Slowly, he eases onto the bed and straddles me. “I liked your dance,” he says. “I like even more that you did it because I told you I wanted it.”
“Anything you want,” I whisper, my voice throaty. “You know that.”
“I want you,” he says, then brushes a kiss over my lips. “

And then he does. Seriously. His name is Lucian and he’s a guardian angel, been on the job for two thousand years. His sudden presence in her life is both good—he’s brilliant, witty, and warm—and bad—he’s brilliant, witty, warm, and hot as —-. But as perfect as Lucian seems, he’s got problems of his own. He’s taken up drinking and he’s brazenly inserted himself into Evey’s life, going against the greatest cosmic law ever created.

For Evey, the rules are simple: You are not allowed to hook up with your guardian angel. But sometimes fulfilling your destiny requires a leap of faith, a confrontation with God.

Yes, God as in God.

I enjoy Renee Carlino and her writing.  However, this book didn’t feel that it had the depth of her other books.
What I did love about this book was the different aspects it brought.  Yes, it’s about angels but the way Renee tells the story is quite interesting.  She has a unique take on guardian angels and God and the unknown.  I truly loved the added humor in this book. It helped give the story that quirky view and that what’s kept me interested.
Renee tells this story from Lucian and Evelyn’s POV.   Lucian definitely made this book for me.  I enjoyed his view on things and the way he challenged everything.  His love for Evelyn was astounding.  Evelyn was just ok for me.  I couldn’t really connect with her but that sometimes happens.
Overall, it’s how this story played out that entertained me.  While I had figured out how things were going to happen, it’s the characters reactions that made the book interesting.  These angels do things I don’t expect most angels to do.  And the unexpected in always enjoyable to read.

With their lives teetering between wanting more and losing it all, all four souls dive into the program as a New Year’s resolution, sending them on a crazy, life-altering journey.
Dear Life,
Please be kind.

Yours truly, Hollyn, Jace, Daisy, and Carter.

Meghan Quinn – you have done me in with this book.

This book is an emotional tidal wave.  It will crush you but the end will leave you feeling new and fresh again.  It’s an emotional and cathartic story, one that I will forever remember.

“Prove your existence.”

I don’t even know where to start with this book.  It gutted me.  It shook me to my core.  These characters, OMG, these characters.  Hollyn, Daisy, Jace and Carter.  They’ve rooted themselves deep inside me.  They come from all different backgrounds and yet one common thing – to live and love life again.  And Meghan does one hell of an amazing job writing this book from each one of their POV’s.

“Life is work.  Life is a journey of triumphs and sorrows.  Of successes and failures.  Of learning experiences and growing opportunities.”

I want to say so much about this book but can’t and won’t.  You need to read their stories. You MUST read them.  You would think having 4 different main characters in a book would make you go bonkers and have you confused, but that won’t happen.  Not one time.  Even if you don’t see who the chapter or section is about, you immediately know who it is.

“It’s funny that as a collective whole we ask for compassion and understanding but have a hard time handing it out when the time comes.”

You will feel as though you have walked in these characters shoes and lived their lives.  Meghan takes you right there and never brings you back. This book is very raw and makes every damn emotion alive in you; from feelings of fear, anger, hatred, scared, shy, devastation to hopeful, lively, happy, appreciated and wanted.  Meghan will make you come full circle with these characters stories.

“Failure is a part of life. Without failure you never learn, and without trying, you’re never given the chance to fail.”

You have to read this book.  I am telling everyone that if you read one book this year, it’s this one.  Meghan will floor with her flawless writing and her amazing ability to put you right there in the thick of plot.  This is my book for 2017 and I so damn glad that I didn’t have to wait all year to finally read it.

“This right here, this is what experiencing life is all about: living, learning and loving each moment.”

This is writing.   It’s a whole other side of Meghan than what we’re used to.  This book is what it means to take your readers on a journey and make them feel the words an author writes.

About the Author:

Born in New York and raised in Southern California, Meghan has grown into a sassy, peanut butter eating, blonde haired swearing, animal hoarding lady. She is known to bust out and dance if “It’s Raining Men” starts beating through the air and heaven forbid you get a margarita in her, protect your legs because they may be humped.
Once she started commuting for an hour and twenty minutes every day to work for three years, she began to have conversations play in her head, real life, deep male voices and dainty lady coos kind of conversations. Perturbed and confused, she decided to either see a therapist about the hot and steamy voices running through her head or start writing them down. She decided to go with the cheaper option and started writing… enter her first novel, Caught Looking.
Now you can find the spicy, most definitely on the border of lunacy, kind of crazy lady residing in Colorado with the love of her life and her five, furry four legged children, hiking a trail or hiding behind shelves at grocery stores, wondering what kind of lube the nervous stranger will bring home to his wife. Oh and she loves a good boob squeeze!
