Love Between Enemies (Grad Night #2)
by Molly E. Lee
Publication Date: January 8, 2018
Publisher: Entangled: Crus

Zoey Handler is ready to put an end to her decade-long rivalry with Gordon Meyers. They’ve traded top spot between valedictorian and salutatorian for years, but all that’s over now. Right? But after a crazy graduation speech prank gets out of hand, suddenly their rivalry turns into all-out war. Time to make peace with a little friendly payback.

Step one? Make him believe they’re now friends.

Step two? Show him the time of his life at an epic graduation party.

Step three? Don’t fall for his tricks.

Step four? Absolutely, positively, do not kiss him again.

So what if he’s cute? (Okay, hot.) So what if he’s charming? (Heaven help her, tempting.) So what if he apologizes? (That has to be fake.) She knows the real Gordon. And no matter how much her heart begs her to stop, there’s no turning back.

Disclaimer: This Entangled Teen Crush book contains one epic party, complete with every high-schoolers-gone-bad shenanigan, and two rivals who discover maybe they could be something much more…if only they’d stop fighting long enough to notice it.

Love Between Enemies is the second book in Molly’s Grad Night series. Every book is standalone within the series. You do not need to read any of the others to follow along as there is no subplot throughout the books.

I am a huge fan of YA books – I enjoy reading them and I usually breeze through them within a day or two (depending on my schedule). But this one, I actually struggled to read and continue on with it. I ended up reading two books before I went back to finish this one and still had a hard time getting through it. It was just ok for me.

I think the biggest issue for me was the entire book was 24hrs – and lord, was it a LONG 24hrs. A lot happened and things between Gordon and Zoey changed, but I wish everything took place over a long period of time. I felt myself getting extremely bored and just wanted to get to the end. I did end up skimming a lot of the book because the angst just wasn’t there for me.

The storyline was cute and I enjoyed that it was about 2 students who are super ambitious and competitive. But the situation felt dragged out and I just felt it all tied up too perfectly in the end, especially for everything happening in 24hrs.

I enjoyed Molly’s writing and her characters which is why I didn’t DNF the book. I just think the whole timeline is what killed the overall vibe for me.

If you don’t mind a storyline being all of 24hrs and enjoy a sweet sort of enemies to lovers YA romance, this book might be for you.

Inseperable_kindle

Title: Inseparable

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Release Date: January 8th

A gritty, angsty, friends-to-lovers standalone romance from USA Today bestselling author Siobhan Davis.

A childhood promise. An unbreakable bond. One tragic event that shatters everything.

It all started with the boys next door…

Devin and Ayden were my best friends. We were practically joined at the hip since age two. When we were kids, we thought we were invincible, inseparable, that nothing or no one could come between us.

But we were wrong.

Everything turned to crap our senior year of high school.

Devin was turning into a clone of his deadbeat lowlife father—fighting, getting wasted, and screwing his way through every girl in town. I’d been hiding a secret crush on him for years. Afraid to tell him how I felt in case I ruined everything. So, I kept quiet and slowly watched him self-destruct with a constant ache in my heart.

Where Devin was all brooding darkness, Ayden was the shining light. Our star quarterback with the bright future whom everyone loved. But something wasn’t right. He was so guarded, and he wouldn’t let me in.

When Devin publicly shamed me, Ayden took my side, and our awesome-threesome bond was severed. The split was devastating. The heartbreak inevitable.

Ayden and I moved on with our lives, but the pain never lessened, and Devin was never far from our thoughts.

Until it all came to a head in college, and one eventful night changed everything.

Now, I’ve lost the two people who matter more to me than life itself. Nothing will ever be the same again.

A standalone new adult contemporary romance with a happy ending. Only suitable for readers aged eighteen and older due to mature content and possible triggers.

WOW. I started writing this review when I immediately finished this book and stopped myself. Many times I have written reviews immediately after finishing and my feelings are so strong, that my words are a jumbled mess and my review is all over the place. And I had no doubt that my feelings would be just as strong a few days later once I was able to somewhat put my thoughts together to write this.

Well, Siobhan, you’ve done it. You put my heart through every damn emotion with this book. There are very few books that have made me run the gamut of emotions and feelings throughout the whole book. In a series, yes, but never one book. There are few books where I have cried for various reasons throughout the book, books that had me yelling and swearing at multiple characters, had me pissed off at characters and just ready to throttle them. This book is just WOW!! These characters are so real and honest.

Devin, Ayden and Angelina are the awesome threesome – and no, it’s not what you think. LOL They have all grown up together since they were kids and stayed close through high school. But as they are getting older, they are growing and feelings change. In their senior year of high school, they start keeping secrets from one another, thinking they are protecting one another when in turn, it’s just pushing them all further apart.

When the truths and secrets are finally too hard to tell apart, everything falls apart between them all. The deceit, secrets, lies are too much for this awesome threesome and it puts a divide between them. Ayden and Ange (Lina) try to move forward with their lives without Devin. But he’s never too far away from their thoughts.

However, Ayden and Ange have a much more difficult time moving forward when it seems that Ayden too is starting to hide things from Ange and it feels like she is losing another best friend all over again. Then one night in college will change everything between them all forever.

Inseparable is told mostly from Angelina’s POV for most of the book with sprinkles of other POV’s. I have to say, there were times when I wanted throttle Devin for being an asshole to both Ayden and Angelina. I also wanted to throttle Angelina for coming across as selfish at times – as though everything revolved around her. But that’s also what led to her choices after everything came to a head in college. Ayden, I couldn’t hate that boy if I tried. As much as I want to say what he did was selfish, I can’t. God, I balled my eyes out on that one and had to put the book down to give myself a break (one of many breaks).

As I said earlier, my emotions were all over the place. I was happy, sad, elated, pissed off, hurt and so many other emotions. Siobhan’s writing just really puts you right there in the moment and you feel yourself getting pulled in deeper and deeper with these characters and the story as it moves along. This book has such depth, it will evoke very strong feelings and reactions. To be able to read this book in one sitting, was impossible. Not because it wasn’t amazing, but because I had to take breathers. I needed to calm my beating heart, soothe the ache and stop myself from throwing my damn kindle across the room. LOL

Inseparable deals with ALOT of issues. Siobhan writes them with such authenticity and never once glosses over any part of them. I won’t state what the issues are (gives away the monumental and turning moments) but know that they are handled perfectly and respectfully.

Inseparable is definitely a book that everyone needs to read. Siobhan may put your heart through the ringer, but it’s damn well worth it.

Excerpt:

He leans in, his lips brushing my cheek as his mouth makes a round trip to my ear. “What if I told you I want to be your most favorite person? The one you adore above everyone else?” His warm breath is doing strange things to my insides. My entire body is tingling, and my limbs feel like they’ve turned to rubber. He moves his hand up and down my spine, and a soothing warmth seeps bone deep. I clutch his waist harder, subconsciously moving closer until there’s barely a sliver of space between us. Every cell in my body screams for him, and I should pull back, withdraw from temptation, but I’m already under his spell.

He kisses my cheek again, and I melt into him. “What if I wanted that, Ange?” he prompts. “What would you say?”

I should refuse to answer. Throw out a lie and put a halt to this. But I can’t. “That you already are.” My heart is thumping wildly in my chest, and I can scarcely hear for the blood rushing through my ears. “That you always have been.”

He cups my face firmly, and fierce emotion blazes in his eyes. “I’ve wanted you to say that to me for a long time. I suspected, but I needed to know, because I’m a selfish, greedy bastard when it comes to you.”

“Dev, I—”

“Ssh,” he interrupts, sweeping his thumb along my lower lip, and the look in his eyes almost melts my panties off. My body sways forward, my craving for him reaching an unparalleled high. “This is the most supremely selfish act of all, but I can’t resist.”

“Resist what?” I croak, my voice hoarse, raw with need. I’m holding my breath in anticipation. Every nerve ending in my body is on heightened alert.

He licks his lips, dropping his hungry eyes to my mouth. My body pulses with need, and I squirm a little, keeping my eyes locked on his, knowing the desire I see is mirrored on my own face.

“This,” he confirms, closing the gap between us and slanting his mouth over mine.

Pretty Dead Girls wasn’t as nail biting as I was hoping it would be, but it was still a good read.

Monica definitely stays true to her roots of YA with this thriller and keeps the characters very real. I would have to say this is like Mean Girls meets Pretty Little Liars, having more of PLL vibe to it with the dramatics and mysterious thriller antidotes. But well held it back for me, was being able to “connect” to any of the characters.

The overall plot is what kept me interested in this story. I didn’t care for any of the characters, except Cass. He had me on my toes because he sort of comes out of nowhere and has connections to the girls who are slowly winding up dead. And now he’s seemingly interested in Penelope but staying secretive about his closed off about his “friendships” with Pen’s closest “Friends” who are being plucked off one by one.

I only deducted one star for the lack of character development because everything else was very enticing and made the book so intriguing that I wanted to figure out who the killer was. Monica gives us some bread crumbs to follow throughout the book and I surprisingly was right on my guess, but I have to admit they were not the only one on my radar of possible killers.

Overall, it’s a great mystery to read and follow. Just don’t expect to become too invested in the characters or really connecting to them. To be honest, I truly envisioned characters from the show, Pretty Little Liars, as the characters in this book just because I just couldn’t envision the characters written. 😕

Give it a go if you enjoy YA reads.

Cover Reveal….Respect by Aleatha Romig

Respect – An Infidelity Stand-alone Novel

“The making of a man”

Standing at what I believe is the precipice of my life, I, Oren Demetri, was too young to understand that it wasn’t and too old to imagine that it couldn’t be.

The already hefty accumulation of my successes and failures, bravery and fears, and rewards and suffering, had brought me to this point. It was hard to contemplate the things I’d done, and yet, in reality I’d only begun to learn the possibilities.

I suppose that’s how it was for me at twenty-nine years of age on the brink of all I’d ever wanted without fully realizing the price I would pay. Yet in that moment, I knew there would be no cost too great or sacrifice I wouldn’t make. I had no idea how far-reaching that moment of self-discovery would be; because as the congregation’s murmurs quieted, bleeding into silence and allowing the thump of my heart to be the only sound I heard, I was a man filled with love and adoration, emotions in stark contrast to those I needed in the world I’d built or the one I was about to enter.

Angelina Costello was my dream and now my reality. I’d worked diligently to move beyond the actuality of being a dockworker’s son to becoming a self-made, successful entrepreneur, all in an effort to earn the right to call her my own. I’d overcome servitude to others, collecting their paychecks and lowly praises, to being the one who signed the paychecks and offered the accolades when they were rightfully earned.

The world was my oyster and walking toward me on the arm of her uncle was my pearl. I’d found her amongst the empty shells life had offered. There was no need to pry open another possibility. Angelina was all I wanted. Yet my path was uncharted. There was more for me to earn, lose, and willingly give.

The top of that list was respect.

This stand-alone novel may be read without reading the Infidelity series.

From New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today bestselling author Aleatha Romig comes a stand-alone novel based from her beloved Infidelity series. With classic Aleatha Romig twists, turns, deceptions, and devotions, this new epic romantic thriller will delve into a world where family takes on new meaning and even the inhabitants are suspicious of the next chapter.

On the Way to You, an all-new emotional standalone from Kandi Steiner is LIVE!

On the Way to You by Kandi Steiner

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Publishing Date: November 16th, 2017

What makes you happy?

That was the question Emery Reed asked me the day we met, and I couldn’t give him a single answer. I could have said my dog, or my books, or yoga — but I just stared.

And then, I got in his car.

It was crazy to take a road trip with a stranger, but after years of standing still, he was my one-way ticket to a new life, and I wasn’t going to miss it.

We shared the same space, the same car, the same hotel room — and still, we were strangers.

One day we’d be laughing, the next, we wouldn’t speak. Emery was surrounded by impenetrable walls, but I wanted in.

Discovering his journal changed everything.

I read his thoughts, words not meant for anyone’s eyes, and the more I learned about him, the harder I fell. It turned out nothing made Emery Reed happy, and I wanted to change that.

I earned his trust by violating his privacy, and as wrong as it was, it worked — until one entry revealed a darkness I never knew existed, a timer I never knew was ticking.

Suddenly, what made me happy was saving Emery from himself. I just didn’t know if I could.

Well, if the last book I read by Kandi was any indication that she really knows how to wrangle your emotions, this book definitely proves that once again.

“It isn’t death that’s scary. It’s living without actually living at all, breathing without purpose, existing without essence. I’ll walk into Death’s arms willingly with a smile on my face, and that cold embrace will be the warmest I’ve ever been. I’m not scared. I never have been.”

Kandi wrote another meaningful and strong story. It touches your heart in so many ways. It opens your eyes to the way people see things. Not only does this story make you find the happiness in everything, but it makes you also see why some people just can’t see that light; why people struggle with depression. And sometimes there just isn’t a reason why; it just is and that’s ok.

Emery and Cooper are two polar opposite people in every aspect possible. She’s light, he’s dark. She sees hope in everything; he sees nothing but a dead end. She wishes for her true love; he doesn’t believe in true love. But these two also teach each other in ways they never anticipated.

Emery has a lot more experience in life than Cooper. She’s been cooped in her little town her entire 20 years, but has a goal of getting out and moving to Washington where her dream school is. But her life up until now hasn’t exactly been peachy, but she has refused to let that stop her. Without giving much away, Cooper has used the hurtful words thrown her way to push her forward, to never be like that.

Emery has pretty much lived the perfect life anyone could want. Except he just can’t see the beauty in it. And it’s not because he isn’t grateful, but because he suffers from depression. A depression that he can’t explain and that makes it all the more difficult for him. Only one person in his life has ever understood him, his grandmother. And now she is gone. So he’s set out on the journey he promised her before she passed.

Oh I am getting chills throughout my body just thinking about this journey. Emery picks up Cooper on the first leg of his journey and damn if it’s not a journey of a lifetime. Not just because of the places they visit, but how they both each grow a bit along the way – in the short span that it is, they grow in ways neither expected. And that is all I am giving you. Because their journey is one you need to take with them without any insight.

“And in my heart, I knew the odds were against us – that we might be able to start the happily ever after, but our chances of finishing it were slim.”

Kandi, thank you for writing another poignant and meaningful book. A lot of times we read to get lost in the characters or other worlds; to let our imagination take over. And then we read books like this where we get wrapped up in the emotions and the heart of the story because it’s something that needs to be heard and understood.

To fellow readers, yes this is just story that I know you will enjoy and fall in love with the characters. But know that you are also getting one hell of a meaningful story that rings true to life for so many people.

Enjoy.

Autoboyography by Christina Lauren…ARC Review

Autoboyography releases TOMORROW!

Synopsis:

Fangirl meets Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda in this funny and poignant coming-of-age novel from New York Times bestselling author Christina Lauren about two boys who fall in love in a writing class—one from a progressive family and the other from a conservative religious community.

Three years ago, Tanner Scott’s family relocated from California to Utah, a move that nudged the bisexual teen temporarily back into the closet. Now, with one semester of high school to go, and no obstacles between him and out-of-state college freedom, Tanner plans to coast through his remaining classes and clear out of Utah.

But when his best friend Autumn dares him to take Provo High’s prestigious Seminar—where honor roll students diligently toil to draft a book in a semester—Tanner can’t resist going against his better judgment and having a go, if only to prove to Autumn how silly the whole thing is. Writing a book in four months sounds simple. Four months is an eternity.

It turns out, Tanner is only partly right: four months is a long time. After all, it takes only one second for him to notice Sebastian Brother, the Mormon prodigy who sold his own Seminar novel the year before and who now mentors the class. And it takes less than a month for Tanner to fall completely in love with him.

My Review:

Autoboyography is the newest work from the dynamic writing duo of Christina Lauren and it’s pretty much a given that I will read anything these ladies put out.  This, of course, was no exception.  I was so happy and so lucky to have gotten an early copy of a book that truly is a book everyone should read.  For so many reasons this book is hugely important and is so relevant in today’s world.  Touching on many important things including sexual identity, religion, societal issues, family dynamic, and so many more, this book touched me on a level that will stay with me forever.

Tanner and Sebastian’s relationship starts out as an innocent mentor situation in a senior year advance writing class.  From that start, however, the glimmer of attraction between them was apparent.  We begin with Tanner pining for Sebastian from afar, knowing, for many reason, Sebastian would never be anything more than a crush. Sebastian, you see, even if he was gay, is a Mormon, and in that religion, having a romantic relationship with someone of the same sex was simply not done.  Ever.  Knowing how life is in a Mormon town, Tanner accepts that and continues his secret crush and is just thankful to be in Sebastian’s presence, even if it’s  in this way.   But each time they spend time together, Tanner can’t help but feel the attraction is mutual and is growing stronger every day.  He wasn’t wrong.  What follows, once Sebastian speaks his feelings out loud, is a beautiful and emotional journey of self-discovery, love and loss, and moments that will change both Sebastian and Tanner (and, I suspect readers) irrevocably.

I felt so many emotions while I was reading this story.  In fact, I’m getting all teary-eyed again as I type this. Looking at my young adult life, I have to say I was pretty lucky.  I lived in a small town but the people I surrounded myself with were mostly open-minded. I was raised to accept everyone regardless of sexual orientation and now that I have a 14 year old I have to say I’m so thankful for that upbringing.  I’m raising my son to know the same values and also, no matter who he choses to love, we support him. I know that there are so many young people struggling for acceptance after discovering who they are in their true self.  And man, does it break my heart.  Sebastian and Tanner are fictional but I know they represent so many real people just like them.

Tanner’s family loved him for him but were worried because, for obvious reasons, Sebastian choosing to have a relationship with him would be nearly impossible.  Of course they wanted to protect him from a broken heart.  Unfortunately, the heart wants who it wants. Sebastian’s family, because of their religion, know only one way and that’s for a man to love a woman.  Period.  So you can imagine the emotional journey that unfolds on these pages.  And yes, it was emotional, but it was also beautiful in the most important of ways.

The hopeless hopefulness Sebastian and Tanner have in their quiet moments together both broke my heart and mended it at the same time.  It was incredible.  I don’t want to go through and tell too many specific moments because this is a story you really need to experience for yourself and I don’t want to spoil even one moment for you.

Christina and Lauren, thank you for this book.  Thank you for bringing us Sebastian and Tanner’s story.  They will live in my heart forever.

Loving Kalvin by Siobhan Davis….Review

BOOK BLURB:
A friends-to-lovers second-chance romance from USA Today bestseller Siobhan Davis. Standalone with HEA and no cliffhanger.

Lana
I knew it would end in disaster, but I didn’t listen to reason. I didn’t care. Because I loved him so much.
Kalvin Kennedy ruled my heart.
Until he destroyed it.
Shattered it so completely that I became someone else. Someone I loathed. Someone who repeatedly lied to her loved ones.
So, I ran.
From him. From myself. Desperate to hide my new reality.
But I could only run so far.
When he reappears in my life, I’m terrified. Unbelievably scared of facing the consequences of my actions.
Never mind that I still love him and want him so badly—there’s too much at stake now.
How can I trust him with the biggest secret of all when he’s likely to rip my world apart again?

Kalvin
Lana was always far too good for me. Everyone knew it but her.
I tried to stay away, but I was weak.
And I hurt her.
Crushed her until she barely resembled herself. Forced her to follow a path she would never have willingly chosen.
And then she was gone.
And my world has never felt as empty, as lonely.
She begged me to stay away. Not to find her. To forget she ever existed.
But that’s like asking me to slice my heart in two and toss half aside.
I’ve never believed in fate, but when I rock up to the University of Florida, I’m ready to eat my words.
Because she’s here. Like I hoped she would be. And I’m determined to prove I deserve a second chance.

Loving Kalvin is the 4th book in Siobhan’s The Kennedy Boys series. It is a standalone, however, if you want to understand the true meaning behind Kalvin and Lana’s history, I would highly recommend reading the previous three books, which you do need to read in order.

Quick background:

Kalvin and Lana have known each other since they were two. But they were never on the same level in society’s eyes. He was the rich boy and she was the daughter of the help. As they got older, Kalvin denied whatever he was feeling for Lana and in her eyes, strung her along while he played the field with every other girl. Lana ended up doing the unthinkable and in her blind hate and rage, accused of him rape, something she knew wasn’t true. She requited her statement in court but asked that he leave her alone and never look for her.

And that’s where this Loving Kalvin starts off. Lana is now enrolled at UF and trying to move on with her life. She has changed her name so that people don’t recognize her so easily and hopefully prevents Kalvin from ever finding her.

Kalvin finally got his shit together and realized that his feelings for Lana were never going to dissipate and that he needed to prove to her he was in it for the long run. But he also knows that he has a lot to prove of himself to her.

If you have read any of Siobhan’s other books in this series, this book doesn’t have the deep angst and drama that the others have. And it shouldn’t. Kalvin and Lana story is about second changes, learning to trust and love again. These two have gone through a lot and now they are trying to move forward, together.

I have to admit, I am not a huge fan of Lana because of what she did. Even after reading this book, I am still on the fence with her. She is very selfish and uses excuses to explain away her decisions. I will be honest, Kalvin is a damn saint for being able to forgive her for everything and wanting to have that second chance. Without giving any of the twists away, Lana isn’t completely honest with Kal when they start to rekindle what they have, and her dishonesty with him is way worse than her wrongful accusation of rape.

I know many are thinking, if you don’t like one of the main characters, how could you rate the book with 4 stars. Let me explain myself – Siobhan was able to write a character that I am sure she no doubt knew her readers wouldn’t care for initially but would maybe empathize with once we got her story. In my case, no, I still didn’t like her. I don’t hate her, but I am not a Lana fan at all.

For me, it’s the fact that she is able to write an amazing story with characters I may love and/or hate that I rate this book so high. When an author is able to make the story so damn good, that I actually want to smack characters upside their heads because of their actions, that’s a damn good book!

Loving Kalvin is an enthralling and emotional story. Siobhan really knows how to bring out all the stops and keep you rooted in the story with the ups and downs of a great love story. Another enticing read from Siobhan.

No two Kandi Steiner books are the same, and if you’re a lover of angsty, emotional, and inspirational reads, she’s your gal.

An alumna of the University of Central Florida, Kandi graduated with a double major in Creative Writing and Advertising/PR with a minor in Women’s Studies. She started writing back in the 4th grade after reading the first Harry Potter installment. In 6th grade, she wrote and edited her own newspaper and distributed to her classmates. Eventually, the principal caught on and the newspaper was quickly halted, though Kandi tried fighting for her “freedom of press.” She took particular interest in writing romance after college, as she has always been a die hard hopeless romantic, and likes to highlight all the challenges of love as well as the triumphs.

When Kandi isn’t writing, you can find her reading books of all kinds, talking with her extremely vocal cat, and spending time with her friends and family. She enjoys live music, traveling, anything heavy in carbs, beach days, movie marathons, craft beer and sweet wine — not necessarily in that order.

Burn Before Reading by Sara Wolf…Review Tour

And a wolf meets his match.

A girl meets a wolf.

Beatrix Cruz – Bee for short – has exactly one goal; kick her dad’s severe depression in the ass. She’s got a foolproof plan;

1. Get into the elite high school Lakecrest Preparatory on a scholarship

2. Study like crazy

3. Graduate into NYU and become a shrink

Nothing can stand in her way – not even Lakecrest’s rich, hot, and notorious Blackthorn brothers. Not Fitz Blackthorn, with his flirting and his elite computer hacking, not Burn Blackthorn, with his intimidating height and emotionless face, and certainly not sinfully handsome Wolf Blackthorn, who hands out ‘red cards’ to students who displease him, and expels the ones who keep doing it.

But when Bee stands up for a student, she pisses off Wolf, and he’s suddenly itching to pull her scholarship from underneath her. To keep it, Bee strikes a deal with the devil – father Blackthorn himself; spy on Mr. Blackthorn’s sons, become friends with them, and learn their secrets in exchange for staying at Lakecrest.

Betraying the Blackthorn brothers’ trust is supposed to be easy.

Becoming friends with the Blackthorn boys makes it hard.

And falling in love with Wolf makes it impossible.

You know me, paper-and-pen. You know I absolutely despise people who have it easy. And the Blackthorns had it so easy. They were rich. They were gorgeous. And everyone liked them. They lived charmed lives.
Or so I thought at the time.
Anyway, it wasn’t the fact everyone stared at them constantly and would stare at them for the rest of eternity until they left the room that pissed me off. It was the fact they never seemed to care about the attention.
There was Bernard, or Burn, for short. Taller than his brothers by at least a head, he was the oldest of three – a senior. His green eyes were always heavy-lidded, like he was perpetually on the verge of falling asleep, though he had the same dark, thick lashes as his brothers and high cheekbones. I knew he was on the Varsity basketball team, and was the whole reason Lakecrest went to states for four years. He didn’t talk much, but he didn’t need to. With his height and width, he was more than a little intimidating. Some people called him ‘the bear’, half-jokingly, half-terrified. Now that I think about it, he was definitely most of the reason people gave the Blackthorn brothers such a wide berth, physically speaking.
The second brother was Fitzwilliam – Fitz, to everyone outside his family. Aside from the fact their mother was clearly on a big Victorian England trip when she named her sons, he was the most likable. And by ‘likable’ I mean he deigned to acknowledge people. Sometimes. If they were pretty enough for his tastes. He grinned more than the other two brothers. Once, he even winked at a girl, and the poor thing dropped her textbooks on her foot and she limped for a whole week straight with a dumbstruck smile on her face. The teachers and staff at Lakecrest were just as susceptible to his charms – he had a way with a smile and a compliment that got even Mr. Nomsky, the grizzled old English teacher, to soften up. Fitz was part of the computer science club, though I’d heard from the other members he never attended a single after-school meeting.
Fitz had wavy hair like golden lace, neatly slicked-back, and the same green eyes as Burn, but with a friendlier edge to them. He was the only one with freckles on his nose, and he wore his uniform like it was a casual toga – his tie-half loose and his jacket slung over his shoulders. He was the baby of the three, and it showed in the way he never took anything seriously. I had three classes with him, since he was a sophomore, too, and not once did I see him pick up his pencil or try to read the textbook. And strangely enough, the teachers never harped on him to do it, either. I chalked it up to the general unfairness of wealth until I saw his test results; nothing lower than 98% on every single test. And here I was, busting my ass from the time I got home from school till midnight just to make an 80% in one of the most strict, college-oriented curriculums in the country. Needless to say, I hated him. Still do, actually, but back then I hated him without knowing him.
And finally, we came to the grand emperor of all evil – Wolfgang himself. He didn’t always walk in-between the other two, but he seemed to like to, as if they were his personal gargoyles instead of his brothers. Taller than Fitz, but a hair’s shorter than Burn, Wolfgang – or Wolf for short, because of course there’s always a ‘for short’ with them – walked like a sidewinder moves in sand; utter silence and perfect poise. I think that’s what intimidated most people – that he looked like he could never be ruffled, or upset, or tilted off-balance, not even by a passing tornado. There was something unshakeable about the way he held his head, his broad shoulders. It scared people. Well, maybe it was also the fact it looked like he hated everything. Where his brothers’ eyes were green, Wolf’s were brown-green, hazel if you really wanna get all gushy and poetic with something like Satan’s eye color. Regardless, Wolf’s eyes burned. They burned with a deep poison I can only describe as utter contempt. His gaze was always sharp, and started to hurt a bit if you maintained eye contact with him for too long. It was a small mercy his hair was as dark a black and shaggy as it was – it got in his eyes a lot, and put a buffer between the world and his acid-fire. Unlike Fitz, he wore his uniform perfectly pressed, though he always kept several silver rings on different fingers, and it was no secret he played with them, turning them around his skin in idle moments, or even when he walked. The middle brother, Wolf was a junior, and the rumors were already swirling he was poised to go to an Ivy League. He was on the Varsity swimming team, and nothing else.
Burn was the quiet one, Fitz was the flirty one, and Wolf was the nasty one. Everyone knew that.
And as they approached Eric and I, I realized from Eric’s stare and the way he started trembling harder that they were the ones who sent him the post-it. I grabbed it from his fingers and waved it as the Blackthorn brothers came close.
“So you’re the ones who gave Eric this weird, ineffective paper stop-sign, huh?” I asked. Wolf spun a ring on his finger and pointed his volcanic glare at me.
“This doesn’t involve you, scholarshipper. I suggest you keep your nose out of this.” He snarled.
Burn, obviously used to Wolf’s usual venom, closed his eyes and leaned on the lockers like he was taking a casual nap. Fitz turned to the hallway railing and watched the clouds go by, as if he was bored by it all. Scholarshipper. Of course he’d use the fact I’m the only one on scholarship to this school against me. Everyone else had mommies and daddies who could pay for such a prestigious place. I took a deep breath.
“And I suggest you go back to Hot Topic and give them their entire juvenile angst section you’ve clearly gobbled up and repurposed as a personality.”
Burn cracked an eye open. Fitz turned his head over his shoulder, one eyebrow raised. Wolf narrowed his long-lashed eyes to slits. Eric probably peed himself.
“Who do you think you are?” Wolf asked. The way he said it, dark and low and serrated like a knife, made me realize for a split-second why Eric might’ve pissed his pants. Beneath all that rich-boy angst, Wolf had an anger in him, a genuine, awful fire. Burn might’ve been the brawn behind the Blackthorns, and Fitz the affability, but Wolf was the fear.
“I’m just a scholarshipper,” I said brightly to counter his darkness. “Minding her own business.”
“You clearly aren’t,” Fitz chimed in with sweet smile, voice like cool honey compared to Wolf’s ragged one. “This is none of your business.”
“You’re right. One sec.” I held up the post-it and ripped it in half, letting the paper flutter to the floor. I’ve always been one for dramatics. And for a fair fight. Eric versus all three of the Blackthorns wasn’t fair by any definition in the solar system. I smiled at Fitz. “Now it’s my business.”
