review

I truly, truly enjoyed reading this book. It has been quite some time since I have read a book by Elizabeth Reyes (not on purpose). And this book just brought back all the reasons why I love reading her books. I will definitely be going back and reading books 2 and 3 in this series.

Again is Sydney and Emi’s story. Sydney is Sarah’s best friend from way back and I am so happy that he got his own book. Emi is part of the Moreno/Romero in an extended way. These two are living in the same building and don’t realize how close they really are til a family gathering.

They develop a beautiful friendship, one that neither expected due to not only their age differences but where they are in their lives. But their friendship grows and becomes one that neither can live without. That makes things extremely difficult when Emi becomes serious with Sly and he is not thrilled that her best friend is a guy. Unfortunately, that is the only obstacle or problem that Emi and Sydney face. I won’t give away much more about the plot or the storyline. Just know that this is one story where you are thrown a few curve balls at very unexpected times.

Elizabeth does a fantastic job of making this story so real and very relatable. The banter between all the characters is amazing. There isn’t one instance that seems too far fetched. The entire story moves at the perfect pace and keeps you entertained. There were a few scenes where I found myself having to put the book down because I was overcome with emotions and had to get myself together before continuing. But I found myself smiling a lot in this book.

Even if you have never read any of the previous books in this series or her other series, you will still thoroughly enjoy this book. Elizabeth does a fantastic job of giving each of the characters a brief overview of how they all intertwine and it doesn’t deter from the story line.

I am looking forward to reading more from Elizabeth in the future!

A trio of sexy Vikings has arrived! Book spotlights & Giveaway

Move over Highlanders – the Vikings are coming! Romance novelists, and Viking enthusiasts, Asa Maria Bradley, Gina Conkle, and Megan Crane are here to tell us what makes a Viking the perfect hero/heroine!

Asa Maria Bradley (Viking Warrior Rising):

I think we love Viking heroes and Valkyrie/Shieldmaiden heroines because they make the perfect action/adventure protagonist. They’re physically strong, have amazing endurance, and are courageous trained warriors. Throw in some stubbornness, maybe a troubled past, and you have a perfect main character. They are a little flawed and carry some darkness inside them, but love will of course heal them.

Gina Conkle (Norse Jewel):

Viking’s make the perfect hero or heroine because they have resourcefulness and honor. When weapons won’t work, they use other ways to solve a problem. Despite their adventurous spirit, Vikings are farmers at heart. They live by the land first, as raiders second.

In Norse Jewel, my hero Harkan had recently purchased Helena, a Frankish woman not born to slavery. He asks about her past, discovering she was betrothed, but her man didn’t try to save her. Disgusted, Hakan says, “’Tis a hardship the way you’ve come to my keeping, but your man was a coward. I defend my own.”

Megan Crane (Edge of Obsession):

Vikings could teach post-grad level alpha hero lessons. What’s better than that?

In Edge of Obsession, Tyr pretty much commands the page. He commands the page, he commands his raider brothers, he certainly commands the heroine he takes hostage and claims as his. He’s a pretty commanding guy, and that’s all outside the bed. In bed? Well. **fans self** And when he falls in love? He treats it like every other battle he expects to win. All in until he’s done.

Chapter 1

March 16, 2003

Payson, Arizona

He thought he was dead.

Steam hissed from the crumpled front end of the RV that had folded accordion-style against the guardrail. His face stung from the punch of the airbag. His lungs burned from that awful talcum powder that drifted through the cabin as the bag deflated. The chemical dust, suspended in the air, seemed to be frozen in time.

His nose was numb and swollen. He tasted blood trickling down the back of his throat like a cocaine drip. He peered through the cracked windshield, his eyes adjusting to the reddish glow of a desert sunrise. The crushed-in hood had jarred upward. The chassis was off balance. The whole vehicle wobbled as he shifted his weight in his seat.

Oh my God.

He cranked the door handle and heaved his shoulder into it to pop it off the jamb. He hopped down onto the highway. The winds were heavy and dry, rustling the sage and scrub oaks that dotted the rugged landscape along the Beeline Highway. A sliver of fiery light barely illuminated the peaks of the Mazatal Mountains, which rose and fell against the horizon. Giant saguaros stood like sentries.

The back half of a red two-door sedan lay beneath the shredded front tires of the RV. Flattened like an aluminum can. On impact the RV must have bucked forward, rolling up onto the rear bumper of the smaller car, coming to rest on its roof. The significant weight of the RV crushed the sedan into something you might see stacked in a junkyard.

The highway was quiet. Just the rush of hot wind crackling the delicate spines of the sagebrush. He got his bearings quickly, the initial shock of the crash having passed. A sobering experience. Literally. Half a handle of Jack Daniels coursing through his veins had been replaced by something stronger.

Panic.

He saw long hair, a young female’s. How he could tell her age by the back of her head, he would never know. Maybe by its length and sheen—bright, yellow-blond. Slick with blood. Her forehead propped on the steering wheel. The driver-side window blown out. The windshield was a shattered web.

The man beside her—or boy, he was arguably young—was out cold, his body positioned in the passenger’s seat in a gimpy, off-kilter fashion. The passenger side had been thrust into the guardrail, which molded itself to the frame of the car. His head lolled against the door. Blood leaked from his ear and ran down his neck.

“Are you okay?” he screamed, although he knew he would get no reply. His voice resonated throughout the valley. “Hello?”

He braced himself against the ruined front end of the RV. He felt a surge of bile and whiskey come up in the back of his throat. He heaved forward but held it in. He was lightheaded.

Oh God, please let this be a dream. Oh God, please…this can’t be happening, this can’t be happening. This isn’t happening. This isn’t happening…

After viewing her all-time favorite love story, “Anne of Green Gables”, at the impressionable age of ten, Frances Fowlkes has been obsessed with affable boy-next door heroes, red-heads, and romance stories with lots of “highfaluting mumbo jumbo” written within their pages. It only seems natural then that she married the boy who used to pull on her curls in her high school English class, had not one, but THREE red-headed boys, and penned multiple love stories with bits of flowery prose.

When not writing, Frances loves spending time with her family, fangirling, and planning her next vacation.

Frances Fowlkes, originally a northern mid-westerner, now lives in the southeast with her ardent hero of a husband, three playful and rambunctious boys, and one spoiled standard poodle.

A self-professed Anglophile and summa cum laude graduate of LeTourneau University, Frances Fowlkes combines her passion for happily-ever-afters with her interests in both American and English histories.

SYNOPSIS

I have one rule: Don’t shit where you eat. Several of the women in the condo complex I own would love some one-on-one playtime, and why wouldn’t they? I’m young, fit, attractive, and loaded. Not to mention I’m packing a sizable bulge below the belt. It’s a combination that drops panties on a regular basis.  Yay, me, right? But my cock, troublemaker that he is, has been confined to my trousers by my business partner. A concession I agreed to, and one that’s never been hard to enforce until Emery moves in across the hall. She’s smart, young, determined, and sexy as hell. I want a taste. I won’t stop until I’m buried deep inside the succulent new-in-town brunette. After being warned about my past, she does her best to steer clear, but I’m about to show her that underneath it all, I’m a guy with a heart of gold and a cock of steel. My name is Hayden Oliver, and this is my story. SCREWED is standalone romantic comedy by New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today bestselling author Kendall Ryan.

REVIEW:

Once again – Kendall delivers another hit with her intoxicating mind!!

I really enjoyed reading this romantic comedy about Hayden and Emery.  She definitely gives this playboy a run for his money, and then some.

Emery is a very strong woman and holds her own against any man.  She’s had her fair share of the asshats.  And when she’s been warned of Hayden before even meeting the man, he immediately lands himself on that list.  However, Emery also likes to form her own opinion of people based on her interactions with them and not someone else’s.

Hayden doesn’t deny that he goes through pussy like most women go through underwear.  I mean hell – he says he has a cock of steel – so why not spread the wealth!  But he also has a soft spot but it’s rare for any women, aside from his sisters, to see this.

Kendall delivers the perfect story of friendship between male and female.   Hayden will make you swoon. Emery will have you high-fiving her!  I was laughing so hard that my sides hurt with these two.  And the tension between them could be felt miles away!  These two definitely know how to poke and prod the other with their innuendos towards one another.

A fabulous and extremely entertaining plot with characters that make you smile and want them in your life.   Bravo Kendall!

Excerpt:

“Tell me more about you,” Emery asks, leaning in toward me.

“What do you want to know?”

“Enlighten me.” She shrugs.

Leaning back in my seat, I cross my ankles. “My job is pretty much my life, and I love what I do. Taking an old rundown building and turning it into luxury units that rent for top dollar is awesome. It never gets old. I love seeing the transformations.”

“That’s amazing.” She nods. “What else … surely there has to be more to you than just work.”

“You want to know something deep, huh?”

She nods, eager.

I think about it for a second, and memories of my checkered past flash through my brain. But rather than watch her expression turn to one of sympathy when she learns my past, I’d rather see her face light up with a smile. “Blow jobs are my spirit animal.”

She rolls her eyes at me, but laughs.

Mission accomplished.

“You seem normal enough. What in the hell did you do to piss off Roxy?” She chuckles as she says this, and suddenly all the blood in my veins turns to ice water.

I scrub a hand across the back of my neck. “Roxy and I . . . it’s a long story, and not one I care to discuss right now.”

She pouts. “Fine. Regardless of your history with Roxy, you didn’t deny what she told me about you.”

“What exactly did she say?” Now I’m actually curious.

She shrugs, playing with the long strands of hair from her ponytail that rest on her shoulder. “She just warned me to stay away from you. Told me about your man-whore background.”

“Well, your virtue is safe. I made a deal with my business partner. No more sleeping with tenants.” I’m not sure why I’m telling her this, maybe because it’ll be easier to enforce the friends-only rule I’ve set for myself if she knows that she’s off-limits to me.

“So sleeping around in general is still fine?” There’s a mocking tone to her voice.

“Absolutely. This will be just friends.” I gesture between us. “Unless, you naughty girl, you’re trying to tempt me.” I give her a flirty wink.

She frowns and shakes her head. “Not a chance in hell. I told you. I’m done with men, and you, Hayden Oliver, by all accounts are a piece of shit.”

“Excuse me?” I cock an eyebrow at her.

“I’ve dated guys like you before. And I classify all men who think with their dicks under S for Shitty.”

“I do think with my cock on a regular basis, so I can’t argue with you there. But he’s so much more fun than my brain.”

This gets a small smile from her, and my heart beats just a little faster.

“Seriously, why would I take a chance on you and have my heart broken again?”

“Because I have a nine-inch cock and I know where the G-spot is?”

Her cheeks turn pink, belying her cool, confident tone. “Tempting, but not good enough.”

“I was the one he trusted. I was the one he loved, the only one who believed him, even when his own mother had locked him up and thrown away the key. And now, I was going to pass down the white tiled hallway, knock on his doctor’s office door, slam his secret notebook on her desk and make her read it, make her understand what he was hiding, make her see what only I had seen.”

April won’t let Jonah go without a fight. He’s her boyfriend—her best friend. She’ll do anything to keep him safe. But as Jonah slips into a dark depression, trying to escape the traumatic past that haunts him, April is torn. To protect Jonah, she risks losing everything: family, friends, an opportunity to attend a prestigious music school. How much must she sacrifice? And will her voice be loud enough to drown out the dissenters—and the ones in his head?

 REVIEW

I honestly am not sure how to start this review. I knew getting into this book that it dealt with mental illness, but what I wasn’t expecting was the depth at which it took me.

Mental illness is unfortunately something that is very easily overlooked and misunderstood by our society as a whole. It gets overshadowed by other diseases such as cancer, leukemia, or many other diseases that people see as treatable. I’m not saying those illnesses are any less important, but they aren’t viewed the same as mental illness is. This book really hits home in the fact that mental illness isn’t something anyone should be afraid to hide or be afraid to discuss with others.

Leah Scheier does a superb job of giving a great light on this subject. And she does it in a setting where most people are more than likely to judge the person before trying to understand them.

April is a sophomore in high school and sort of a loner. She’s not picked on or anything by other students, but she doesn’t really fit into any of the crowds. She’s always had one best friend who is now going to a new school, so her sophomore year at high school will be more boring than usual with truly no-one to talk to.

Jonah is new to the school. He moved to the area after his best friend passed away earlier in the year. You can tell from the beginning, he’s like April in that he just wants to blend into the crowd and not really be noticed.

As their friendship/relationship progresses, April sees different changes in Jonah but doesn’t know what to make of it. It’s not until he really starts to have episodes where he isn’t making sense and is finally admitted to a psych ward that she starts to put things together.

Throughout the whole time that Jonah is admitted and is working on becoming “healthy” again – April doesn’t leave his side. Jonah goes through so much during his time there; different medications, different dosages, art therapy, talking to a therapist, etc. It’s not easy watching someone you love, not be themselves.  It’s difficult to slowly see the life in their eyes go blank. It’s hard to understand what is going on inside their head, when even they can’t explain it to you.

The part of the book that broke me was right before Jonah was admitted a second time. It really smacks you in the face when you see how easily someone can hide what they are really feeling inside. How easily we misinterpret a few words they said to us during a conversation. How a loved can go from seeming to be on the healthy path when in their reality, they are only sinking deeper and deeper.

I loved at the end of the book when April gave her history presentation to her class. How something so simple, opened up the eyes of not just peers, but anyone who will read this book. It gives you a new perspective on things. And the new doctor who treated Jonah the second time around really understood what it meant to heal and learn from this illness The treatment wasn’t to numb him with drugs; it was to help Jonah understand why his illness is able to take over and how he can fix.

This is one book that will forever stick with me. I will recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading. It will open your eyes, one way or another.

An Excerpt:

I KNOW MY WAY AROUND THE MENTAL HOSPITAL. I doubt most of the girls in my neighborhood could claim that, even though many of us lived just a few minutes from its leafy, sterile grounds, and some of us picnicked on the lawn outside its gate during summer break.

By the end of tenth grade, I knew Shady Grove Hospital better than I knew my school. I knew that the security guard’s name was Carla and that she’d worked at her depressing post since the place was built. I knew the quiet path behind the topiary garden where I could wait until visiting hours began and she let me in. I’d memorized the shape and color of his shadow behind the dark-red curtains, and I knew where I had to stand so he could see me from his eleventh-story window. From that distant spot, I could even guess how well the medicine was working for him that day; I could tell what kind of visit it would be by counting the paces of his shadow.

I had the place mapped out, his daily routine memorized, the doctors’ names and call schedule, every pointless detail carefully recorded in his special little book. He’d given me those notes as if they were classified secrets, the papers wrapped in strips of hospital linen sealed together with bubble gum, long wads of partially chewed Wrigley’s tied into a crisscrossed mesh. That tat- tered spiral notebook was crammed with data he’d gathered over months: patients’ names and histories, nurses’ phone numbers, the cleaning crew’s shift hours. I would never know how these bits of information came together for him or how he even found them out. But somewhere in these random nothings, he’d put together a story for me, a clue of how to get to him, a coded message that, for some reason, he believed only I could read. I was the one he trusted, the only one who had not betrayed him. I was the one he loved, the only one who believed him, even when his own mother had locked him up and thrown away the key.

And now, nearly three months after they’d taken him away, I was finally ready. I was going to march up to the security window, look into the tired guard’s blurry eyes, state my name and the name of the patient I was visiting, and hear the buzz and click of the locked gate sliding open. I was going to walk down the white- tiled hallway, knock on his doctor’s office door, slam his secret notebook on her desk, and make her read it, make her understand what he was hiding, make her see what only I had seen.

I was finally going to do it. I was going to betray him.

I’m super normal.
I’m a single mom to one. Which is plenty, because my son is a genius. How many mothers have to tell their children to turn off the documentary about Einstein so they can sleep?
I suppose it was inevitable. My brand of rebelling in college was to minor in French when my advisor told me not to take it.
I’m a teacher by day, and wonder woman by night. Okay, not really, But how cool would that be?
I like long walks on the beach, and running in slow motion. Oops, wrong profile.
Seriously, did I mention I’m kind of a nerd? That’s in now, isn’t it?
I live books. Love isn’t a strong enough word. I think my first crush was on a Hardy Boy. Now I’ve moved on to rock stars and tattooed bad boys, as long as they’re fictional.
Talking about myself is weird, because I’m just me. So anything else you want to know hit up my author page on Facebook.

How To Save A Surgeon by C.M. Stone….Book Spotlight

Book Title: How to Save a Surgeon

HtSaS_500

Author: CM Stone

Release Date: August 17, 2015

Genre: Lovestruck

Book Synopsis: He’s sworn off all women…

When he lost the girl he loved, Dr. Jackson DeMatteo shut down his heart and became the kind of perfectionist surgeon that alienated him from the residents. Now Jackson has a very coveted promotion dangling before him…but it comes with a price. Working with adorably geeky first-year resident Darla Morales is definitely going to cost him. Big time.

She’s just what the doctor ordered…

Completing her trauma residency demands confidence and Darla, who’s already pretty high on the nerd scale, is definitely not confident. Worse still, she’s forced to work with Doctor Dreamy, who makes her even more nervous and defensive. Darla needs to focus on the work and not his bedroom eyes if she ever hopes to become a trauma surgeon.

Excerpt:

“It’s not like that,” Darla said. “It’s more like the lady version of wanting to rescue the damsel in distress.”

“The villain isn’t a damsel in distress.”

“But movies don’t make heroes emotionally vulnerable in the same way, and that’s what appeals about the bad guy. It’s not him being evil, it’s his pain. He’s hurt and looking for something. If he just let himself be loved, he could be saved.”

Jackson glanced at the screen. Had they watched the same movie? “Saved from what?”

“Himself.”

There was something in the way she said the word. This time he couldn’t resist touching her. His hand cupped her cheek, his thumb stroking her skin. “Are we still talking about the movie?”

“Well, everybody could use a little saving now and then.”

Her eyes closed as she leaned into his touch, and he had the urge to kiss her eyelids and feel the brush of her lashes.

“What do I need saving from?”

His fingers slid from her cheek to the side of her neck, lightly tracing the lines of her body to memorize them through touch. She melted back against the couch and rolled her head, exposing more of her neck to his touch.

She was quiet for so long that he began to wonder if she’d respond at all before her eyes opened a slit. “Being a stick in the mud who only ever wants to do things the same way?”

His fingertips just barely teased behind her ear and at the fine hairs of her nape. It was the lightest touch he could manage without breaking contact, but it still flooded his body with heat. “Is that what you think of me?”

“I’m not sure, but it seems like you try really hard to make people think that.”

He drew his hand away, torn between what he needed to do and what he wanted. “Maybe. I might be compensating a little.”

She licked her lips, her heavy-lidded eyes never wavering from his. “Compensating for what?”

“For occasionally being very, very unprofessional.”
