Claimed by the Warrior
The Conquered Bride Series
Book 3
Releasing 3/31/16
He came to conquer…
A widower, Laird Torsten Mackenzie, has worked long and hard to regain the respect his clan deserved after his older brother turned traitorous. Even in death, Cathal’s  crimes remain a mar on Torsten’s conscience. Setting aside his grief, Torsten devotes his life to his people, and to his young, motherless daughter. When a rival clan attacks his lands unprovoked, he’s determined to put them in their place once and for all. Marching on their gates, he’s taken by surprise when Lady MacDonell steps through the opening instead of her wayward husband. Reacting impulsively, Torsten exacts his revenge by whisking her away.
But she laid claim to his heart…
Headstrong and fierce, Éabha MacDonell’s true nature has been buried for six long years in a marriage that fills her with shame, and has kept her tucked in the shadows. But the death of her husband, and being forced from the only home she’s ever known, brings freedom in a way she’d never imagined. Free to rediscover parts of herself she’d thought never to behold again—her love of art, her desire for children. But most of all, the tug at her heart, the warmth of a secret glance and the heat of a passionate embrace.
In the arms of her captor, Éabha’s more liberated than she’s ever been before and Torsten might just have found the one person who can make him whole again.

Excerpt:

“Is this what ye want, Lady Éabha? Ye want to kill me?”

Teeth bared, chest rising and falling in erratic breaths, she glowered at him, but said not a word.

“Killing me will not solve anything.”

Her arm twitched, the blade nicking his skin ever so slightly. He could feel a tiny trickle of blood rolling down his throat.

She wriggled against him, horror showing on her face at what she’d done, but he held her tight. Every curve of her pressed against him. He stared at her mouth which had gone from a fearsome growl to open shock. Lord, but she was a beauty. Everything he’d ever wanted in a woman, and everything he couldn’t have.

Her eyes dipped just enough to stare at his mouth. Without thinking, Torsten lowered his lips to hers. At first it was a soft brush, a simple slide of his lips over her warm, rage-filled mouth.

But then she dropped the knife, gripped onto him tight, her body shuddering in a sigh that seemed filled with surrender.

Torsten deepened the kiss, claiming her with one, then two, then three swipes of his tongue between the seam of her lips. Tasting her. Delving inside her delicious mouth. Dining on the thunder and fire of her nature.

Éabha clung to him, kissing him back with frantic need. Her fingers curled into his shirt, and he fisted his hand in her hair. Torsten walked her back to the wall, pressing her body up against it. Pinning her there, though he allowed her free reign with her hands.

He kissed her until he couldn’t breath.

Where is your favorite place to write and why?

I tweaked this question up a little bit, because in reality, I write everywhere—on the couch, in bed, in the car, while sitting at the local college library waiting for hubby to get out of class, etc. So instead, I wanted to tell you where the real magic happens and where I do all my best brainstorming. Welcome to my booth at PF Chang’s!

IMG_3893

My hubby and I had eaten at PF Chang’s before, but we didn’t realize the magical brainstorming potential of the place until about three or four years ago. We were at the Lori Foster Reader Author Get Together (big shout-out to Lori!) and had just talked to some other authors about getting serious about a new book series. Hubby and I went to PF Chang’s to talk about it, and over Spicy Chicken the ideas just poured out! That brainstorming session became the X-OPS series. Book 4 – HER FIERCE WARRIOR – hits the bookshelves on the 1st of March.

Since then we start every new book with a brainstorming session over Spicy Chicken. With my X-OPS and SWAT Series coming out as often as they do—plus my other series—that’s a lot of It’s gotten to the point that we look for PF Chang’s in every city we travel to. So if you see a couple sitting at a table at PF Chang’s with their heads together discussing how a werewolf or feline shifter might get themselves out of a particular tough situation, it’s probably us!

An Excerpt:

“So what did you and Landon do this afternoon?” Minka asked, her soft voice dragging him back to the present.

Angelo looked up to see that Minka had already polished off two fajitas. Damn, the girl could eat. “Landon gave me a tour of the DCO complex. I did some target shooting and blew up a few things. He even let me play with the expensive surveillance toys. I swear, it felt more like a recruiting pitch to get me to work there than anything.”

Minka’s eyes flashed green, her full lips curving slightly. Damn, why the hell had he said it like that? Now she probably thought he was going to come work for the DCO. Even if he wanted to, he couldn’t, not after just reenlisting for another five years. The army wasn’t the kind of job where you could walk into the boss’s office and say, “I quit.”

Thinking it would be a good idea to steer the conversation back to safer ground, he reached for another fajita and asked Minka a question instead. “What do you think you’ll work on next with Ivy and Tanner? You going to practice with the claws for a while or move on to something else?”

Angelo felt a little crappy about changing the subject, but if Minka noticed, she didn’t seem to mind. And it wasn’t like he had to fake interest in what she was saying. Anything that involved Minka was important to him. Besides, he didn’t know much about shifters or hybrids, so the whole thing was pretty damn fascinating.

“What do you visualize when you see the beast in your mind?” he asked.

“Before today, I thought of it as a giant, blurry monster.

But after learning that the beast is a cat, that’s how I picture it now.” She smiled. “Not a little house cat, of course. They aren’t scary enough. More like a big cat that roams the mountains.”

“Makes sense,” he said.

Minka set the other half of her fourth fajita on her plate and gave him a curious look. “Would you mind if I ask you a personal question?”

His mouth twitched as he prepared another fajita. He wasn’t used to Minka being so reserved. She usually said whatever was on her mind, regardless of whether it was personal or not.

“Go ahead,” he said.

“The first time we met, I had claws, fangs, glowing red eyes, and I tried to kill you. Since then, I’ve spent most of the time telling you about an imaginary creature that lives inside my head and makes me act like a monster. How are you so calm about that? Most people would have run away already.”

Angelo chuckled. Not exactly the personal question he’d expected, but then again Minka rarely did the expected.

“Well, my mom was full-blooded Cherokee, and I grew up around all kinds of Indian folktales and legends.

My dad was in the army, and whenever he was deployed, Mom would take my sisters and me back to the reservation where she grew up in Oklahoma. I’d stay up half the night listening to the old men tell stories about shape-shifters, animal spirits, skin-walkers, and trickster spirits.” He grinned. “I’m not saying I necessarily believed in all that stuff back then, but after meeting Ivy, Tanner, and the other shifters at the DCO, it just didn’t faze me that much.”

Minka looked at him with wide eyes. “You’re a real American Indian? Like in the movies? With horses and everything?”

He laughed again. The expression of wonder on her face was adorable. “First, I’m only half-Indian. My dad is Mexican, so there’s that. And second, Native Americans are almost nothing like you see in the movies. We don’t all live in tepees and ride horses. In fact, I don’t even own a horse.”

Minka was a little disappointed about the no-horse thing, but she was fascinated with what it was like growing up on an Indian reservation and being surrounded by all those legends. She immediately asked him to tell her some Indian stories. It had been a long time since he’d thought about them, but to make her happy, he dug through his head and tried to remember

By

Eliza Knight

Captured by a Celtic Warrior Box Set

Bestselling and award-winning authors bring you four never-before-published novellas of searing passions that span the ages. Four fierce warriors from Ireland and Scotland… Four heroines determined to resist them… One dagger steeped in the blood and treachery of kings.
The King’s Outlaw, by Kris Kennedy

1193 – Outlawed and on the run, Tadhg O’Malley has one mission: escape with the valuable dagger of Jerusalem before a brutal nobleman hunts him down. Trapped and almost cornered, his plan is simple: kidnap the innocent merchant with the long hair and complicated eyes. Igniting a raging passion is not part of the plan. Neither is falling in love. Both endanger their lives, his mission, and with it, the kingdom.
Taken by the Highlander, by Eliza Knight

1306 – A week before Lady Rose Munro is to wed a neighboring laird, she is abducted on the road by a wicked and dangerously handsome stranger. Highland warrior, Malcolm Montgomery has been ordered by King Robert the Bruce to steal Rose and her son from the suspected traitor she is about to marry—gifting him with an ancient and much sought after dagger as payment. Rose shouldn’t trust her captor. Shouldn’t feel her body heat at his simple touch, or allow him to press his fervent lips to hers… Malcolm shouldn’t be seducing the woman he is sworn to protect. Shouldn’t desire her, for she’s not meant to be his… Succumbing to passion threatens them both, and falling in love is absolutely not an option.
Stolen by a Highland Rogue, by Vonda Sinclair

1619 – When the infamous dagger is stolen from Highland chief, Dugald MacKerrick, he will do whatever it takes to reclaim it, even abduct the wife of the aristocratic thief, but what if his beautiful French hostage isn’t who he thinks she is? Deep in the rugged Scottish Highlands, Dugald discovers not only is his captive, Camille Bouchard, more than he expected, so is the passion raging between them, threatening everything he thought mattered to him.
Her Wicked Highlander, by Jennifer Haymore

1816 – Maxwell White is the newest member of the Highland Knights, an elite mercenary group sworn to protect the Crown. His first assignment is to keep independent and spirited Aila MacKerrick safe from a madman determined to get his hands on a treasure she unwittingly possesses. But Aila isn’t going to simply allow some Highlander—as handsome as he might be—to capture her and whisk her away to an abandoned castle. She’ll fight to the death for her freedom…as soon as she rids herself of this pesky, insistent desire that makes her far more inclined to run into his arms than away from them….

EXCERPT from Taken by the Highlander by Eliza Knight
From the trees, perhaps twenty yards away, the muzzle of a massive black warhorse appeared, covered in shining armor that reached to his ears, which were held back in warning. A reflection on his master. Massive hooves clomped slowly on the ground, like a demon sent from the underworld to take her. His master was equally impressive. Tall and thick, he sat the horse with expert ease, but the sheer size of him alone sent her heart into palpitations. Over a linen shirt, he wore a plaid she didn’t recognize, colors as green as the grass and blue as the sky. A thick iron brooch in the shape of a dragon. Leather boots covered his muscled calves to his knees, and a gleaming silver sword was held in one hand. Hair she thought at first to be brown, gleamed red in the light of the sun. His face was painted in lines and swirls of blue. Dark, fathomless eyes fixed on her.

Rose shook in the saddle, causing her own horse to shift restlessly beneath her. She dragged in a ragged breath, and bit her lip to keep her teeth from chattering.
“Dear God, save us,” one of her men muttered under his breath.

The warrior stared them down with an intensity that could have melted iron. His eyes met hers, locking her in, making her limbs go weak and numb. They were the color of storm clouds, and she swore if he looked up at the sky, he could command lightning to strike.

“Do not engage him,” she whispered. “Negotiate.”

“I dinna think the man has negotiating in mind,” Peter said.

Rose’s belly twisted into knots. She didn’t want her men to lose their lives, not in protecting her. They were low on men as it was. However, Peter was right. One look at the fierce warrior and she could glean that he never negotiated.

“Then we should turn and run now. We might be able to beat them back to the castle,” she urged, trying to save her men.

“Aye, my lady, I think ye’re right.” Peter nodded to the men and as one they whipped their horses around and kicked their flanks, Rose doing the same, until their horses fairly flew across the moors.

From behind she could hear the pounding of the warhorse accompanied by even more. How many had he brought with him? They made no vocal sounds as they advanced, only the thunder of their horses, and with every passing second, Rose grew more fearful. The castle was still a good distance away. They’d not make it through the gates to safety in time.

Was this to be her fate? Having survived a brutal attack at the hands of her enemies nine years before, only to die by a demon warrior in the middle of the moors, buried forever in a bog?

“Hurry!” Peter bellowed.

But his urging was all for naught. Behind her, she heard the painful cry of one of her men, and turning slightly in her saddle, she watched as the man was hit on top of the head with the hilt of a sword by one of the painted demons accompanying the warrior.

He didn’t stop.

He kept coming.

His eyes on her and her alone.

BEAUTY, BEAST, AND BELLADONNA

by Maia Chance

Amazon  |  B&N

Synopsis:

Variety hall actress Ophelia Flax has accepted the marriage proposal of the brutish Comte de Griffe to nettle her occasional investigative partner—and romantic sparring partner—the pompous if dashing Professor Penrose.

But the Comte’s boorish table manners, wild mane of hair, and habit of prowling away the wee hours has shredded Ophelia’s last nerve. She intends to disengage from her feral fiancé at his winter hunting party—until Penrose, his lovely new fiancée, and a stagecoach of stranded travelers arrive at the Comte’s sprawling château. Soon she can’t tell the boars from the bores.

When one of the guests is found clawed and bloody in the orangerie, Ophelia is determined to solve the murder before everyone starts believing the local version of Beauty and the Beast. But until the snows melt, she can’t trust her eyes—or her heart—since even the most civilized people hold beastly secrets.

Excerpt:

Ophelia meant to cling to her purpose like a barnacle to a rock.  It wasn’t easy.  Simply gritting her teeth and enduring the next two weeks was not really her way.  But Henrietta had her up a stump.

First, there had been the two-day flurry of activity in Artemis Stunt’s apartment, getting a wardrobe ready for Ophelia to play the part of a fashionable heiress at a hunting party.  Artemis was over fifty years of age but, luckily, a bohemian and so with youthful tastes in clothing.  She was also tall, beanstalkish and large-footed, just like Ophelia, and very enthusiastic about the entire deception.  “It would make a marvelous novelette, I think,” she said to Ophelia.  But this was exactly what Ophelia wished to avoid: behaving like a ninny in a novelette.

And now, this interminable journey.

“Where are we now?”  Henrietta, bundled in furs, stared dully out the coach window.  “The sixth tier of hell?”

Ophelia consulted the Baedeker on her knees, opened to a map of the Périgord region.  “Almost there.”

There being the French version of the Middle of Nowhere,” Forthwith Golden said, propping his boots on the seat next to Henrietta.  “Why do these Europeans insist upon living in these Godforsaken pockets?  What’s wrong with Paris, anyway?”

“You said you missed the country air.”  Henrietta shoved his boots off the seat.

“Did I?”  Forthwith had now and then performed conjuring tricks in Howard DeLuxe’s Varieties back in New York, so Ophelia knew more of him than she cared to.  He was dark-haired, too handsome, and skilled at making things disappear.  Especially money.

“You insisted upon coming along,” Henrietta said to Forthwith, “and don’t try to deny it.”

“Ah, yes, but Henny, you neglected to tell me that your purpose for this hunting excursion was to ensnare some doddering old corpse into matrimony.  I’ve seen that performance of yours a dozen times, precious, and it’s gotten a bit boring.”

“Oh, do shut up.  You’re only envious because you spent your last penny on hair pomade.”

“I hoped you’d notice.  Does Mr. Larsen have any hair at all?  Or does he attempt to fool the world by combing two long hairs over a liver-spotted dome?”

“He’s an avid sportsman, Artemis says, and a crack shot.  So I’d watch my tongue if I were you.”

“Oh dear God.  A codger with a shotgun.”

“He wishes to go hunting in the American West.  Shoot buffalos from the train and all that.”

“One of those Continentals who have glamorized the whole Westward Ho business, not realizing that it’s all freezing to death and eating Aunt Emily’s thighbone in the mountains?”

Ophelia sighed.  Oh, for a couple wads of cotton wool to stop up her ears.  Henrietta and Forthwith had been bickering for the entire journey, first in the train compartment between Paris and Limoges and then, since there wasn’t a train station within 50 miles of Château Vézère, in this bone-rattling coach.  Outside, hills, hills, and more hills.  Bare, scrubby trees and meandering vineyards.  Farmhouses of sulpherous yellow stone.

A tiny orange sun sank over a murky river.  Each time a draft swept through the coach, Ophelia tasted the minerals that foretold snow.

“Ophelia,” Forthwith said, nudging her.

“What is it?”

Forthwith made series of fluid motions with his hands, and a green and yellow parakeet fluttered out of his cuff and landed on his finger.

“That’s horrible.  How long has that critter been stuffed up your sleeve?”  Ophelia poked out a finger and the parakeet hopped on.  Feathers tufted on the side of its head and its eyes were possibly glazed.  It was hard to say with a parakeet.  “Poor thing.”

“It hasn’t got feelings, silly.”  Forthwith yawned.

Finally,” Henrietta said, sitting up straighter.  “We’ve arrived.”

The coach passed through ornate gates.  Naked trees cast shadows across a long avenue.  They clattered to a stop before the huge front door.  Château Vézère was three stories, rectangular, and built of yellow stone, with six chimneys, white-painted shutters, and dozens of tall, glimmering windows.  Bare black vegetation encroached on either side, and Ophelia saw some smaller stone buildings to the side.

“Looks like a costly doll’s house,” Henrietta said.

“I rather thought it looked like a mental asylum,” Forthwith said.

Ophelia slid Griffe’s ruby ring on her hand, the hand that wasn’t holding a parakeet.  Someone swung the coach door open.

“Let the show begin, darlings,” Henrietta murmured.

A footman in green livery helped Ophelia down first.  Garon Gavage, the Count Griffe, bounded forward to greet her.  “Mademoiselle Stonewall, I have been restless, sleepless, in anticipation of your arrival—ah, how belle you look.”  His dark gold mane of hair wafted in the breeze.  “How I have longed for your presence—what is this?  A petit bird?”

“What?  Oh.  Yes.”  Ophelia couldn’t even begin to explain the parakeet.  “It’s very nice to see you, Count.  How long has it been?  Three weeks?”

Griffe’s burly chest rose and fell.  “Nineteen days, twenty hours, and thirty-two minutes.”

Right.

Forthwith was out of the coach and pumping Griffe’s hand.  “Count Griffe,” he said with a toothy white smile, “pleased to meet you.  My sister has told me all about you.”

Ophelia’s belly lurched.

“Sister?”  Griffe knit his brow.

“I beg your pardon,” Forthwith said.  “I’m Forthwith Stonewall, Ophelia’s brother.  Didn’t my sister tell you I was coming along?”

The rat.

“Ah!”  Griffe clapped Forthwith on the shoulder.  “Monsieur Stonewall.  Perhaps your sister did mention it—I have been most distracted by business matters in England, très forgetful . . .  And who is this?”  Griffe nodded to Henrietta as she stepped down from the coach.  “Another delightful American relation, eh?”

It had better not be.  Ophelia said, “This is—”

“Mrs. Henrietta Brighton,” Henrietta said quickly, and then gave a sad smile.

Precisely when had Miss Henrietta Bright become Mrs. Henrietta Brighton?  And . . . oh, merciful heavens.  How could Ophelia have been so blind?  Henrietta was in black.  All in black.

“Did Miss Stonewall neglect to mention that I would chaperone her on this visit?” Henrietta asked Griffe.  “I am a dear friend of the Stonewall family, and I have been on a Grand Tour in order to take my mind away from my poor darling—darling . . . oh.”  She dabbed her eyes with a hankie.

Griffe took Henrietta’s arm and patted it as he led her through the front door.  “A widow, oui?  My most profound condolences, Madame Brighton.  You are very welcome here.”

Ophelia and Forthwith followed.  The parakeet’s feet clung to Ophelia’s finger, and tiny snowflakes fell from the darkening sky.

“You’re shameless,” Ophelia said to Forthwith in a hot whisper.

Forthwith grinned.  “Aren’t I, though?”

Author Q&A:

  • Describe Beauty, Beast, and Belladonna in 140 characters or less.

Beauty, Beast, and Belladonna is a fun, adventurous, and romantic historical mystery set in a secret-riddled French chateau in 1867.

  •   What is your idea of perfect happiness?

Happiness for me is spending time outside somewhere beautiful, with my husband, kids, and dog.

  • What’s your favorite part of Ophelia’s quirky personality?

I like the way Ophelia compensates in creative and gutsy ways for her lack of a good formal education.  She’s smart and resourceful and she uses her unusual skill set—farm girl, circus performer, actress—to help solve the mystery.

  • Which living person do you most admire?

My husband, actually.  He is an unusually gifted person who overcame significant disadvantages and obstacles to get where he is today.  And he gives the best pep-talks!

  • What inspired you to marry fairytales and mystery?

I was searching for something that hadn’t been done yet, and I was reading a lot of fairy tale criticism for school at the time.  It sounded like a deliciously fun project, so I plunged in.

  • Is there a type of scene that’s harder for you to write than others? Love? Action? Racy?

Dialogue definitely comes more easily for me.  I find action scenes more challenging—I’m paranoid that they’ll get bogged down.  (So if I can, I add dialogue to my action scenes!)

  • What do you consider the most overrated virtue?

Sticking to strict schedules.  I don’t like to keep people waiting, but there is something to be said for giving yourself creative or restful wiggle-room during the day.

  • Which of the characters in this novel do you feel the most drawn to?

I became more attached to Professor Penrose in this book.  He’s more vulnerable and at a loss than in the previous two books—and more deeply in love.

  • Which words or phrases do you most overuse?

Oh, my.  Probably dozens.  I seem to like “buzz” a lot for some reason.  I’m deleting it all the time.

  • Can you describe for us your process for naming characters?

For historical American characters I use census records.  I collect names from cemeteries whenever I visit one, and I often borrow names from literature.  Since my books have lots of characters, I try to give them all distinctive names that hint at their personalities, to help the reader keep everyone sorted in their mind.

  • Who are your favorite writers?

Agatha Christie, P.G. Wodehouse, Edith Wharton and Theodor Adorno.

  •  Who is your most loved hero of fiction?

Indiana Jones.

  • Which talent would you most like to have?

It would be ecstasy to be a really, really great opera singer.

  • You’re hosting a dinner party, which five authors (dead or alive) would you invite?
  1. G. Wodehouse would probably be the life of any party. Also, Agatha Christie, Edgar Allan Poe, Shakespeare, and F. Scott Fitzgerald. There would be lots of drinking at this party.  Maybe some arguments.  No strip poker though.
  • Do you have a favorite time period in literature?

Not really.  Because of my English degrees I have read very widely, and I have favorites from every era.  And every era has its stultifying boring authors, too.

  • What is your motto?

Keep trying.

  • What is the best reaction over a book that you’ve ever gotten from a fan?

Fans who say my book gave them pure pleasure—that’s happened a few times—make me so happy.  It’s my aim to give people something to read that’s a pleasurable and absorbing diversion from Real Life.  Real Life is hard.

  • Where would you most like to live?

A place with lots of trees where I could do all my daily activities and errands on foot.  I’m working on it.

  • Which historical figure do you most identify with?

No one specific, but I often think of the female writers over the centuries who kept at their stories even when they had screaming kids and the dinner to cook and a really messy house piling up around them.  They did it, and so can I.

  • What are you working on next?

I just completed a humorous contemporary mystery that does not yet have a publisher, and I’m working on a historical fantasy adventure with a co-author.  After that, the next thing will be book #3 of the Discreet Retrieval Agency series.

SYNOPSIS

Secrets.
So many secrets. Nothing but secrets.I started another life with a new husband, thirteen new sister wives and a new
place to call home.
But the secrets weigh on me, on all of us.
And every secret leads back to the Prophet the, self-proclaimed, mouthpiece of
God. The man I’ve worshiped since childhood, the man we obey without question.
And he’s the man who will destroy us all.

I must reveal his secrets.
Prove his betrayal, his lies and his deceit.
I will not be silenced, no matter how hard he tries.

And I will never give up. Ever.

EXCERPT
The Prophet linked his hands behind his back, tilting his head a bit as he studied me. “The cake is delicious. Did you make it?”
“I’m glad you enjoyed it, but no, Sarah is the baker of the family. I do make a delicious roast chicken.”
“I should like to try it sometime.”
“I’d be honored.”
Another pause, and my heart raced. There had to be a reason for this conversation. Perhaps he would explain his actions, although the chances of that were slim. The Prophet answered to no one. Who was I to think he’d feel any obligation to explain himself to me?
Get a grip, Aspen. You’re nothing special, just a woman, like any other on this compound.
“My mother is certainly taken with you.”
“Thank you. I like her very much.”
The Prophet stared back at the bench where Jorjina was watching birds chirping from the tree above her. “Well, she always has liked Paul’s wives.”
“Excuse me?” I asked, wondering if I’d misunderstood his last statement.
“How’s your dog?” he asked, clearing his throat. When he turned his attention back toward me, his face hardened.
“Scout?” I asked, my throat dry. “He’s fine. He’s off playing with Jeremiah, I’m sure. They’re attached at the hip.” I attempted to divert the conversation in another direction, but I failed.
“Yes, your boy seems rather attached, doesn’t he?”
“They’re the best of friends.”
“You know, I was surprised to see the dog off the grounds of his home. Is he allowed to roam?”
“No, sir, he normally stays in our yard. Someone left the gate open and he just got out, I guess.”
“Ah, I see.”
“I’ve asked my sister wives to double-check that they always lock the gate, so it shouldn’t happen again.”
Please understand what I’m saying. Please don’t punish my family for what I saw . . . what I think I saw.
“I should hope so. It would be a shame if he wandered away; it seems your little boy would surely follow. You said yourself they’re attached at the hip.” He tipped his head forward and raised both eyebrows. “Am I making myself clear?”
Jeremiah? No! Don’t you touch my baby!
I swallowed hard as sweat popped out on my forehead, my neck, my hands. The Prophet was threatening me, threatening to harm my little boy. In sheer panic, I gave the only answer I could possibly offer.
“Yes, sir.”
“Good.” He clasped his hands together. “Now, I believe I’ll have another slice of cake.”
He stared at me, waiting for me to serve him. I was nothing if not perceptive to expectations. The Prophet had threatened me, and then demanded dessert. His eyes were dull and lifeless, as if threatening to harm my child was just another part of his daily role as Prophet.
In that moment, something shifted within me. If the Prophet felt the need to threaten me, to threaten the life of my youngest child, then he was up to no good. This became quite clear.
And at that realization, I grew angry. Furious.
For weeks, I’d hoped that I was wrong, that I misunderstood. But I knew without a shadow of a doubt that if I’d misinterpreted what I’d witnessed, then there would be no need for the warning that had just taken place.
So I harnessed my bravery within, took a breath, and looked him square in the eye. “Of course, dogs do have minds of their own, don’t they?”
The Prophet’s jaw tensed and his Adam’s apple bounced as he swallowed. “I suppose they do.”
“We try to control him, but he’s just an animal, after all.”
The Prophet stared at me in silence.
“I’ll get that cake for you,” I said with a nod, and went to retrieve a plate with the largest piece I could find as my heart pounded furiously in my chest.
As I walked back to join him, I felt strong, powerful. I’d called his bluff and gotten away with it.
Or had I? Panic replaced my confidence as my heart continued to thump so hard within me that I felt my lungs could deflate completely. The pressure within my chest was almost unbearable.
What on earth did I just do? Have I put my baby at risk? What kind of mother am I?
Apologize, Aspen. Repent! Make things right!
I returned to the Prophet, placed the plate in his hands, and opened my mouth to speak. Before I could utter a single syllable, he gripped the plate with one hand and my forearm with the other. He squeezed hard, painfully, and I gasped.
“Watch your step, Aspen. Your life can change in an instant.”
“Yes, sir.” I looked around the yard to see Paul watching my interaction with his brother. A concerned and confused look crossed his handsome face as he studied me.
Keep sweet. Keep sweet. Keep sweet.
“If you’ll excuse me, I should join Paul and my sister wives.”
“Of course.” The Prophet nodded, releasing my arm and turning his attention to the cake on his plate. He glanced down and smiled. “Ah, a corner piece. My favorite.”
He plunged his fork into the thick icing and placed the large bite of cake in his mouth, such a carefree action considering the tension that loomed between us just seconds before. While I required every ounce of strength within me to join my husband and appear unruffled, the Prophet had no trouble going about his business and enjoying his dessert.
A disturbing thought came to me as I walked to join Paul. Perhaps I don’t know the Prophet at all.

Excerpt:

Relieved, Gabi turned back to the room and for the first time really saw the inside of the tent. It was, in a word, surprising.

For one thing, the interior was a lot more luxurious than she expected. The approximately eight hundred square feet of circular space included an impressive limestone fireplace on the north side of the room, surrounded by a plump sectional sofa. To the east was a full kitchen with butcher- block countertops and stainless- steel appliances. Between the living room area and the kitchen sat a small dining room table and four wooden chairs hand painted in a whimsical chicken motif. To the south where Gabi stood was a full- sized, white wrought- iron bed dressed with a yin- yang patterned comforter. Paneled walls partitioned off the west side, which she supposed housed the bath-room. Hand- scraped, knotty pine flooring invited her to take off her shoes and relax. A skylight let in what light remained of the overcast day.

Maybe tent living wouldn’t be too weird after all. She stepped deeper into the home and turned to glance behind her. On the back of the door was a Christmas wreath and a plaque that read “Home Sweet Yurt.”

A yurt.

So that’s what this was.

The room was chilly, and she looked around for a thermostat, only to realize there wasn’t one. Was the fireplace the only heat source? That was an intimidating thought. Umm. Maybe there was another flight back to LA tonight.

Suck it up.

No running away. She could do this. It would be like fancy camping. Except that she’d never been camping and had no idea how that worked.

Outside, she heard the ping of an axe again. Clearly yurts were not soundproof, but at least the noise reassured her that He- Man had decided to respect her privacy and he’d gone back to his business.

Good. Great. This was the perfect time to fetch her luggage from the car and start settling in.

She breathed a sigh of relief, picked up the keys she’d dropped along with her purse when she’d run panicky into the yurt. Head down, she pulled open the front door, strode forward— And plowed smack- dab into a wall of blue-flannel-wrapped muscles.

Yeeps! She jumped back, lost her balance, and wobbled precariously on the edge of the deck.

You Are Dead by Peter James…Book Spotlight and author Q&A

23848172

Synopsis:

You Are Dead is the eleventh thrilling crime novel in Peter James’s Roy Grace series.

The last words Jamie Ball hears from his fiancée, Logan Somerville, are in a terrified cell phone call. She has just driven into the underground car park beneath the block of apartments where they live in Brighton. Then she screams and the phone goes dead. The police are on the scene within minutes, but Logan has vanished, leaving behind her neatly parked car and cell phone.

That same afternoon, workmen digging up a park in another part of the city unearth the remains of a woman in her early twenties…who has been dead for thirty years.

At first these two events seem totally unconnected to Roy Grace and his team. But then another young woman in Brighton goes missing—and yet another body from the past surfaces. Meanwhile, an eminent London psychiatrist meets with a man who claims to know information about Logan. And Roy Grace has the chilling realization that this information holds the key to both the past and present crimes. Does Brighton have its first serial killer in over eighty years?

Author Q&A:

1    Tell us about YOU ARE DEAD–the eleventh novel in the Detective Superintendent Roy Grace series. Does it pick up exactly where WANT YOU DEAD left off?

Sure! You Are Dead is my 11th Roy Grace novel. A young Brighton woman arriving home from work phones her boyfriend, to tell him she has just driven into their underground car park and can see a man acting strangely. Her boyfriend tells her to drive straight back out but before he finishes speaking she screams and the phone goes dead. He calls the police and rushes home himself – and she has vanished.

That same afternoon, workmen digging up a park in another part of the city, unearth the remains of a woman in her early twenties, who has been dead for thirty years. At first, to Roy Grace and his team, these two events seem totally unconnected. But then another young woman in Brighton goes missing – and yet another body from the past surfaces. Detective Superintendent Roy Grace has the chilling realization that there is a connection between the past and the present. Does Brighton have its first serial killer in over eighty years? A monster who has resurfaced after lying low for three decades?

  1. You once wrote that you published your first story at 16. What has changed about your writing process between now and then?

I’ve had vastly more experience in life since then. And I think that I probably have a slightly better handle and understanding of the human condition.

  1. Is there anything you wish you could say to your 16 year-old writing self?

Have belief in yourself. I think success requires a number of elements – an element of ability, an element of self-belief, an element of perseverance and, always, luck.

  1. For fans just starting out in the series, would you suggest they start at the beginning or can they pick up with “You Are Dead”?

Every Roy Grace novel is a standalone, and they can be read in any order, although going through from the beginning of the series readers will get more out of the running threads.

  1. Do you ever get writer’s block? If so, how do you deal with it?

I actually believe it is a myth, and it is used as an excuse!  I think it comes out of not having properly worked out an idea, and becomes a self-indulgent excuse.  “Oh my dears, I have writer’s block….”.  Writers are writers and in my view can always write, if they want to.  I’ve come to a dead end sometimes during the course of writing a story, but when I’ve analysed the problem, I realised that I hadn’t thought it through.  A thirty minute walk around the block or across fields with the dogs will normally do the trick!
