BETTING ON FATE

The man she should want, or the man she craves…

This time, all bets are off…

Penelope Carson loves to steal clients from Will Reaver. Yet something in her business nemesis’s icy blue eyes makes Penelope…nervous. It certainly doesn’t help that the man is the living embodiment of a Norse god. A controlled, powerful Norse god. Which she really should have remembered before she made a bet with him—because losing means becoming Will’s personal submissive for a week.

There’s nothing Will would like more than to have Penelope kneeling before him in complicit submission, her fiery dark eyes inviting him in. Challenging him. But their bet takes Will and Penelope deeper than either of them have ever been. Where control is an illusion, and boundaries are pushed aside. And where hearts become the stakes in a game that neither Dominant nor submissive can win…

Excerpt:

All Penelope wanted to do was to curl back up in Will’s lap and close her eyes for a bit. Her body felt strangely disconnected, and her head was fuzzy as if she’d just downed a bottle of wine. She’d known pain could turn to sharp pleasure between one breath and the next, but experiencing it for herself was something else entirely. Experiencing it in the capable hands of Will…

She shook her head and tried to focus. He wanted her to leave. He’d just said as much. She struggled to her feet, wobbling a little and wondering how she’d managed to keep her heels on this entire time, and reached down to pick up her bra. He watched her as she wrestled it on and then slid into her dress, his blue eyes unreadable. Had he worn that same non-expression the entire time he was beating her and then going down on her?

I don’t think so. Not when his voice had dropped and roughened when he talked to her, and he’d shown those little glimpses of heat. No, he was affected, whether he wanted to be or not.

It struck her that maybe he wanted to hustle her out of there because he had a secondary sub set up. The night was young and he was no doubt still wanting to scratch his itch. He certainly hadn’t gotten off with her. Hurt rose, and dampened the strange fog around her. There was nothing in their contract about being exclusive, so of course he’d be seeking pleasure elsewhere tonight.

She shrugged into her coat, her muscles protesting the movement. All she wanted was to curl up and sleep—to do something to maintain the feel-good sensation currently leaving her body. She paused at the doorway, waiting for… She wasn’t sure. For him to tell her to stay? For him to rush over and take her against the wall? Penelope shivered at the thought, then forced her spine straight. She’d promised herself that she wouldn’t beg Will for a damn thing, and she wasn’t about to break. Not now, not ever.

So she opened the door, part of her still expecting him to call her back, and walked out. Nothing. She caught a few curious looks from people as she made her way around the perimeter of the room and to the elevator. The doors closed without interruption, and only then did she allow herself to sag against the wall. “This is so incredibly bad.”

About WANT IT:

In the latest tantalizing Rule Breakers novel from Jennifer Chance, an irresistible alpha male follows his ex into a deadly standoff—and reignites a heated affair.

For Erin Connelly, being a good girl isn’t such a bad thing. She’s working her dream job at a Boston art gallery and staying out of trouble, which is more than she can say for her deadbeat mom. Unfortunately, her mother’s latest misadventure lands her in the clutches of a Mexican drug lord. Now the only person who can save her is the one man Erin has no business asking for help: the sexy-as-sin army ranger who just so happens to be her former high school sweetheart.

Zander James is no gentleman—and no officer, either, thanks to Erin. Four years ago, she made a call that terminated his highest aspirations … and their relationship. He’s never forgiven her, but when he learns that Erin’s embarking on a half-baked rescue mission, he sure as hell can’t let her go alone. Now, with a treacherous enemy lying in wait, the electrifying tension between them may just be Zander’s undoing. Because while he may be able to keep Erin alive, he can’t promise to keep his hands off her.

Excerpt:

A note to readers from author Jennifer Chance:

Because WANT IT is a romance, not a military suspense book, I found I had to focus very hard on not writing scenes that were too “action-adventurey”. But one character who just refused to leave the narrative was Rey Torres. Rey is a shadowy “friend of a friend” who shows up to help Zander and Erin when they need it most, on their quest to free Erin’s mother. He’s smart and funny and a little too happy to bend the rules, but he fits well with the more serious Zander and goes a long way toward making Erin feel just a bit safer in a strange country. Here Rey touches on the danger that exists in Nuevo Laredo, even while trying to reassure Erin. It’s a difficult balance to strike!

“You doing good back there?”

Zander’s words brought her back and Erin blinked. “Yes! Yes, all good.” They were approaching a long line of cars at a bridge, and she was struck with how, well, how normal everything seemed. Not that she wanted a big shoot-out at the Mexican O.K. Corral, but if they went through this with no more trouble than a trip to the grocery, she admitted that a small part of her would be . . . ever so slightly disappointed. She’d read a tiny amount about the drug trade in Mexico, and about people who ran afoul of the dealers. It seemed a lot more scary on the Internet than it did driving around in a rental car.

She frowned as they drove past the first bridge. “Isn’t that where we’re headed?”

Rey glanced at her in the rearview mirror, his ever-present smile still curving the edge of his mouth. “No, ma’am. That’s what we call Bridge Number One—a good enough bridge, don’t get me wrong. But the one we want is Bridge Number Two. I have a pass for the SENTRI lane there.” He tapped a small hang-card he’d slung over the rearview mirror.

“Like an express lane?” she asked, and Rey nodded.

“Exactly like that.”

They turned onto the bridge, and Erin watched the sunlight playing over scorched concrete as they made their way across the arching expanse. “So, is it really as dangerous here as I read about? Should I be worried?”

“You? Not at all.” Rey shrugged. “You have Zander with you, and he seems like a smart guy. You seem like a smart woman. With two smart people, I have found that there is never much need to be worried.” They bumped off the bridge and down onto the street, Rey handling the vehicle easily to get over to the first exit, heading west. “Now if you were dumb? Well, that would be another thing altogether. Camino Real, yes?” Rey asked, and Zander nodded, while Rey flashed Erin a bright grin in the rearview mirror. “Then your adventure begins, my very smart friends. Welcome to Nuevo Laredo.”

Chapter
1
Levi
“Surgery went well, Levi, but it looks like you’ll still be out about two full months. You should be back on the field mid-season. My advice is to rest up and follow your
physical therapy to perfection.”
“Two months?” I question, hoping I heard him wrong.
“Levi, your body can’t take many more hits, and it definitely deserves a full
recovery.”
Trying to sit up in the bed, I begin to argue again. “But football is my…”
“It’s only going to take one wrong hit on your spine, and you’re done. Done, as in the
rest of your career, or finished, as in a wheelchair. Without a full recovery, your chances
of being in a wheelchair the rest of your life is heightened.” Dr. Valentine hesitates a
moment, jotting down some quick notes on a prescription pad, and then continues. “It’s
your choice, Levi. You need to give your body the time it needs to heal. I will be the
only one clearing you to play again.”
The doctor’s words are crystal clear, and I can see none of my razzle dazzle and shit
talking will convince him otherwise. The words finished and done scare the living shit
out of me. They are my worst nightmare and truly haven’t been a reality for me until
now. I feel it every morning when I get out of bed. Muscles, bones, and joints all scream
in protest with every single movement. Just the simple act of tying my shoes has been
painful.
I knew it would be a vicious tackle to take me out, and it was.  In a fucking preseason
game where it’s understood to take it easy on the players, especially the first string.  I
guess karma is a bitch. I saw number eighty-two flying in my direction, but chose to put
all my faith in my linemen to block him or at least hold him off until I released the ball.
There was a wide-open receiver for a gain of about twelve yards, but I wanted the long
bomb for the TD. When I saw my receiver finally open up in the end zone, it was just
about the exact time the defender took me out. Lost the ball, lost the game, and lost my
opportunity to play for two months.
“Want me to contact your father? You’ll need someone around.”
“No, I’m good.”
“Levi, I can’t stress to you how important this recovery is. You’ll need someone
around for physical and mental support. I don’t think any of your blonde bombshells
will be much assistance at all.”
His last words make me laugh because he’s absolutely right. None of my frequent
weekend entertainment is in it for the long haul. They’re all plum satisfied with a
weekend full of hot and heavy sex.
“No, don’t call my dad. I don’t need his judgmental, overbearing ass on me.”
“Well, you’re going to need some type of assistance over the next two months. Who
else is here in Dallas?”
While finally being able to shift my head enough to look out the window, I answer,
“I’ll have my driver pick me up.”
“You’ll need help, Levi.”
“I’ll fucking take care of it.”
Everything inside of me wants to pick up the nearest object and chuck it at the
window or the doctor’s face. Glass breaking or some bones crushing under my hands
would feel brilliant right about now. I have nothing left to live for until I can get back
out on that field.
If I were my brother, Lincoln, I’d have a loving wife and a dog at home to comfort
me while I heal. Instead, I have trophy case after trophy case to console me—oh, and my
three Super Bowl rings. The one thing about the trophies and rings is they are amazing
and life altering to win in the heat of the moment and during the passion of the game,
but the metal grows cold mighty fast, leaving behind rapidly fading memories.
My dad has always groomed me to be a living legend, something to talk about for
years and years. Football was and has been my only option, throwing the pigskin in the
back yard after school and on weekends, attending every single football camp within a
hundred miles of home, and watching tape after tape of game films. I could recite any
playbook when I was six years old. Lincoln, on the other hand, loves football as well,
but played it his way. He did it without dad’s approval. And that’s my biggest regret; I
wish I could’ve been strong like him. Instead, I was molded into my dad’s dream.
Feeling guilty and like a typical ass, I finally let the surgeon know I’ll be okay and
taken care of.
“I’ll call my driver and fly back to Colorado to one of my homes.”
“Who is there to help you?”
“Lincoln and Lynlee.”
“Good, I’ll set up a physical therapist for in home services. We’ll do everything on
our end to get you back out on the green.”
“How many nights do I have to stay here?”
“With how smoothly the surgery went, I’d just like to observe you for the next couple
days. Why don’t you make arrangements to fly out on Thursday?”
“Fine.”
“Do you want to call any family or friends?”
“Nope.”
“Levi, I’d like to help you through this.”
“Then I need more pain meds.”
Moments later a nurse walks in, and I watch as she injects something into the tube of
my IV. She’s quite the hot piece of ass. I’d definitely be tapping that shit all night long.
She even has a sweet smell covering her body that I could easily visualize myself
consuming.
“Levi, this will make you drowsy,” she says, capping the needle.
I can’t seem to pry my eyes from the back of her as she reaches up to dispose of the
needle and syringe in the red container.  A strip of her flesh peeks out between her
scrubs, and this narrow glimpse sets me on fire.  I find my hand willing itself to reach
out and touch her before she turns around.
“I’ll be your night nurse, so if you need me, push this button. Oh, my name is
Ashley, so just let me know if you need anything, and I do mean anything.” She finishes
off her words with a flirty little wink in my direction.
My insides turn with her looks, scent, and presence. I’d definitely be taking this one
home for a couple nights. Yes, she’d be granted a VIP pass to the Wilks’ Wild Weekend
Express, hosted smack dab in my bed at my mansion in Dallas. My hand finally
responds, stretching out in her direction, and when she places her petite little palm in
mine, I know I have her.
“Ashley, I could do so many things to you. I’d love to see those panties of yours…”
Before I can finish my last word, everything goes black.
***
“Sir, you’re not supposed to walk. I’ll get your wheelchair.”
“Just shut the fuck up and get my bags.”
I let Lincoln know I was coming to stay for the next couple months. For fuck’s sake,
in reality it’s my house. Lincoln and Lynlee have lived here since they married. They
both wanted to stay in Colorado since it was the place they met, and Lynlee wanted to
go to college. Lincoln lucked out and was drafted to Denver.
The assholes have the perfect life just the way they want it. I can’t deny the fact; they
fought tooth and fucking nail to get it. They didn’t pussy out and let someone else call
all their shots, and I, for one, wasn’t going to allow them to live in the home Lincoln and
I were raised in.
Dad and Lincoln have truly worked through most of their shit, and Lincoln still came
out the way he wanted. Played defense, went to the college he wanted, majored in what
he wanted, dated who he desired, and let his middle finger fly to the rest who didn’t
approve. Not me. I’m the oldest, and yearned for approval around every corner, leaving
me with a hollow life.
“Sir, you are not supposed to walk.”
Turning to the naive puke of a driver, I lay into his ass. “Do you fucking realize
you’re talking to? Do you?”
The young douche clams up. The look on his face is almost comical. Even in my
weakest state, I have the power to bring pussies like him to his knees, and I enjoy every
fucking second of it. It might make me an arrogant ass, but being a dick is the only
saving grace I posses.
“And you weren’t supposed to be born, so shut the fuck up, already,” I add to sting
the wound a little more.
I feel muscles rip and tear as I try to peel myself out of the limo. The pain is familiar
and immediately reminds me of my younger days when my dad demanded perfection
from each pass. I now have the same sensation years later trying to simply walk from a
car to the front fucking door of my own home. The pain is so intense I want to ask the
young puke to honk the horn to get Lincoln’s attention to come help me, but then again
it might even be worse to have the brother I envy help me.
I never would’ve thought ten simple steps would be the longest of my ever-loving
life, but I want to be the dick to knock on my own door. I bet Lincoln is about to sit
down and eat dinner with his wife, with his dog lying obediently at his feet. Fuck, I bet
she’s the kind of woman to bake his ass chicken potpie every Thursday night. What a
douche.
Before my hand instinctively turns the doorknob, I decide to ring the doorbell at the
last minute. I chuckle to myself, imagining Lincoln complimenting Lynlee on his dinner
and petting her knee under the table, only to mutter curse words when he hears the
doorbell ring. Lincoln may be a wild spirit, and we might as well have different fathers,
but I can call his next move from a mile away. Some might say we haven’t been brothers
for years, yet I know him better than anyone on this earth, and right now he wants to
knock the lights out on the fucker ringing his doorbell, because he was moments from
taking his wife to bed.
When the door opens, it’s neither Lincoln nor Lynlee looking back at me. To my utter
amazement, my fucking little bro has gone and hired the hottest fucking home nurse. A
blonde bombshell stands before me, and I try hard as I can to keep my jaw from
dropping wide open. Every muscle in my body is aching, yet my cock has no problem
springing to action for the juicy blonde. It’s obvious my home nurse hasn’t had the
chance to change into her naughty little nurse outfit.
“Well, are you going to invite me in, Nurse Nancy?”
“Excuse me?”
Talking slowly and deliberately, I say, “Are. You. Going. To. Invite. Me. In?”
“Who the fuck do you think you are?” she asks, and the rush of her hot breath
brushes my lips.
The smell is so sweet and tender it makes my cock bulge even further. I know one
thing for sure; this nurse will be checking my blood pressure topless tonight.
“Levi,” comes a familiar voice, Lincoln. “You’re supposed to be in a wheelchair.
What the fuck you doing walking already, bro?”
“Well, if Nurse Nancy here could help a fellow out…”
Not only do I say it, I also gesture with my hand, grabbing myself.
Another voice joins the mixture, and it’s Lynlee’s this time. “Levi, you made it.”
When her gaze hits mine, I see the same concern as in my brother’s eyes. They know
I should be sitting and not standing. They know the consequences all too well.
Without allowing her to respond, I relieve their stress. “Well, if Nurse Nancy would
move her ass, I could get up into my bed and get down to business. I knew Valentine
was setting up in home therapy, but not an in home nurse.”
Grabbing the inside of the doorjamb, I force myself up into my house, and looking
around the place, I really like what they’ve done with it. Looks like a home, the perfect
loving home complete with two dogs to kick.
The big tittied blonde looks mystified and almost a little horrified with my arrival.
Doesn’t the bitch realize this is, in fact, my house? Or maybe she has no idea a three-
time world champion just graced her with his presence.
“Weren’t expecting your patient to arrive so early or what?” I finally ask, breaking
the silence.
“I’m not a nurse.”
Losing my patience with this stuck up bitch, I demand, “Then who the fuck are you?”
The bitch really has some balls, as I watch her step up into my face, pinning me down
with her best death stare.
“Stop,” Lynlee yells and pushes her way in between us. “Levi, this is my best friend,
Jazzy. She’s staying here with us.”

Excerpt:

THE EVASION – Adrienne Giordano

Gabe rolled sideways in the pitch black of Jo’s bedroom and smacked his hand along the nightstand. What the hell time could it be? Still dark out and his damned phone was ringing, which meant he was most likely getting called out rather than once again ushering in a sunrise with Jo—something they’d been doing on a fairly consistent basis and he had no complaints about.

He cleared his throat and snatched the phone before it woke her. “Townsend.”

“Hey. DeFiore here.”

When an undercover vice cop called at—he checked the blaring red numbers on the bedside clock—four-thirty; chances were, something was happening.

Behind him, Jo shifted. Well, she did more than shift. She scooted right up to his back and pressed that amazing rack against him, skin to skin, all warm and sexy. His mind fast-forwarded to the end of the conversation with DeFiore. Hoping for a false alarm, he’d ditch the call, roll Jo onto her back and put a smile on her face. If their most recent history proved right, she wouldn’t mind.

“You there?” DeFiore asked.

“I’m here.”

“Your guy is in some Podunk town near Charleston, South Carolina.”

His guy? Jo snuggled closer, wrapped her body around his, and something in his chest kicked. Every time she touched him, it brought an explosion of shock, then pleasure, then calm, in perfect order. Bam, bam, bam. He didn’t understand it and didn’t really care to.

Gabe scrubbed his hand over his face, snapped his fingers against his forehead to clear the morning cobwebs—and distract himself from his insane erection—and focused on the moonlight squeaking through the curtains. Ignore the hot blonde behind you. “Martinson?”

“What?” This from Jo. She’s awake. Good.

“Yeah,” DeFiore said. “One of my CI’s heard it. I don’t know how solid the intel is, but this guy is usually good.”

For six weeks, with the help of investigators from Jo’s law firm, Gabe had been chasing down leads on the elusive smuggler that Jo was bent on locking up. Until now, nothing had popped.

“You know where he is?”

Behind him, Jo levered up and her bare breast connected with his arm. His little brain—the one between his legs—shot to full-scale alert. Jo did this to him, sent his mind and body to overload. Every time. He could barely be in a room with her without a raging hard-on. Which made life fucking uncomfortable considering she was the pit bull intellectual property attorney on the Clean Sweep task force and he was the ESU sergeant on the same team. Together, they’d cleared the streets of New York of more than two million dollars in knockoff designer handbags. Not to mention the other bullshit items women—and some men—had to have.

Yeah, that’s it. He’d think about the case and not Jo’s hand sliding over his stomach and coming to rest by his hip.

“You found him?” she asked.

Gabe snapped his fingers at her. What the hell was she thinking? His boss already suspected something might be happening between them. Something they’d been trying to hide. They didn’t need DeFiore telling a bunch of cops Gabe had a woman in bed with him. The guys on his team weren’t stupid. Eventually, they’d figure out who the woman was.

Jo bit his arm. Not hard, but enough to make sure he knew she damned well didn’t like him snapping his fingers at her. Hell, he didn’t like snapping his fingers at her, but what was he supposed to do? Tell her to be quiet?

He sat up, dug out the pen and paper he knew she kept in the bedside table. “Whatcha got? I’ll check it out.”

“Town is called Leeville. Small. As in population two hundred twenty-five. My guy said Martinson’s wife has distant family there and they’re staying with them.”

“Name?”

“Sorry, dude.”

Ach. Well, that sucked. But in a town of two hundred twenty-five people, it wouldn’t take long to narrow down the visitors. “I’m on it. Thanks.”

He dropped the phone and rolled back to Jo, throwing his leg over her so she’d know exactly what his little brain was thinking. “You bit me.”

“You snapped your fingers at me.”

He inched closer, tightened his leg around her and nipped her shoulder. “Because I don’t want some detective spreading word that the woman I’m sleeping with knows Martinson.” He knocked on her head. “Hello. Wouldn’t be hard for my guys to figure out who I’m in bed with.”

“Oh. Right. Didn’t think of that.” She lifted her chin, giving him access to her neck. “Martinson?”

He dotted kisses along her neck and she let out the small moan he’d grown to recognize. The screw-me-now moan. “South Carolina. At least the CI says South Carolina.”

“We can go there.”

“Someone can.”

We can.”

“Sshh. Right now we have other places to go.”

I lost my father to stomach cancer twelve years ago. I still think about him every day, and I’ve decided losing him is not something I’m meant to recover from. By the time my father’s condition was diagnosed, he’d already reached stage four and quickly underwent surgery to remove most of his stomach. Despite all this, he stayed strong and was determined to fight cancer. He’d been a boxer in his younger days and still had a warrior’s mentality, so no disease would take his life without a few punches being thrown. During that time my father taught me some of the most important lessons I’ve learned. He taught me the power of positive thinking and that never (ever!) giving up could bring amazing rewards.

  1. Why did you participate in the LAST HERO STANDING fundraiser for fellow author Pamela Clare?

Due to my personal connection with cancer, I like to help in any way I can to battle this brutal disease. Plus, being an author, I understand that authors are small businesses and like many other small businesses, it’s extremely difficult to succeed. Most non-writers don’t realize how hard it is to make a living as a writer. I saw this fundraiser as a way to ease the burden of a fellow author trying to succeed while battling cancer.

Return to Branton Blitz…University of Branton Series by Nazarea Andrews

ReturntoB

Author Note:

University of Branton is a special place for me. It’s a conglomeration of my hometown and the town I made my home when I got married and combines with it the small town feel of a college. College changed my life–and I wanted to share that in my stories. Each book focuses on a different romance–Atti and Avery, Dane and Scout, Megan, Asher and Luca–and challenges relationships pose, while circling back to the previous couples and friends you’ve made in earlier books. Each can be read as a standalone–much the way each family is a separate entity in a small town–while it still ties to the others. Which is my favorite thing about small towns.

So! Come spend a little bit of time in the sleep small Southern town. I hope you love the University as much as I do. <3

P.S- This attached bonus scene is set in the weeks after Beautiful Broken, after the fight that was never quite resolved between Dane and Atti. (scene below)

She wants a summer job and a ride to a wedding.

They didn’t know they needed each other.

Avery Emili needs two grand. Two grand and a plane ticket–her sister is counting on her to get to Jamaica for her wedding. But the semester is over, and tutoring college freshman and high school students has dried up until the fall.

Atticus Grimes needs help–the messy split with his wife left the twenty-eight year old professor scrambling to keep things together as the semester winds down. Now he’s got a research grant he has to actually do research for and all he wants to do is drown himself in a tall bottle of bourbon.

When Avery sees his ad for an assistant, all she’s thinking is a summer job. But as they spend time together, in the office and out, both of them begin to realize something is there. Something that can’t happen–he’s a professor and she’s a student. And both of them have histories, pasts that won’t let go. Bonus Scene:

It’s fucking freezing. One of the nice things about Louisiana, supposedly, is that it’s warm. But this winter has been colder than a witches tit. And I’m about over it. I blow on my hands, stomping the mud off my shoes.

The office is quiet, this early. None of my staff have shown up. I don’t mind–I wanted the quiet to get some work done before I was forced to be the boss.

But leaving Scout sleeping in my bed was probably one of the harder things I’ve done. I keep thinking leaving her will get easier, or the sex would get a little less hot. That seeing her wouldn’t turn me on.

But it does. Every fucking time. It would be annoying as fuck, except I’m enjoying it too much.

Like last night…

Wait. Stop that shit right now. There will be plenty of time for that later, but right now I have several cases demanding my attention and I’m still too far behind.

Taking time off when she was in her accident was a no brainer. I had come too close to losing her to want to be farther than her bedside. But it didn’t mean it was easy to leave the practice. I was still feeling the effects of that and I had to get my shit together before Tripp decided to come back and nose around.

There’s a sharp rap on the front door and then Atti’s voice, “You here?”

It’s an annoying question. Or maybe everything about Atti is annoying me lately. I’m still pissed at him and he knows it.

“Office,” I yell.

A few seconds later, he appears in the doorway to my office and I stare at my best friend, not sure what to say.

Fuck it. This is his party–he came to me. He can decide what to say. I glance back at my paperwork and Atticus curses. Walks into the office and throws himself into one of the chairs across from me.

Scout sat in that chair, before I kissed her for the first time. Hmm. Possibly not the best train of thought at the moment.

Atticus

He’s staring at me, a tiny smile on his face easing the scowl I’ve seen too often in the past month.

“Avery bitched me out this morning,” I say, stretching my legs. The scowl eases a little more, and Dane actually smirks.

“Is that why you’re out of her bed this early in the morning?”

I nod, “Pretty much the only reason.”

He laughs and I feel the tension in the room relax. “Look, I’m sorry, man.  I was wrong.”

Dane looks like he swallowed something insectile and it’s still wiggling. He shakes his head slowly. “I don’t think you get how bad you fucked up, Atticus.”

Avery said the same thing. I wondered, distantly, if they had discussed it, then dismissed the thought—Avery and Dane tolerated each other. They would never be friend, never be much more than they were now—cautiously trusting because of me.

“Explain it to me,” I say.

“If you need to have it explained, you aren’t going to understand.” He snaps, a hint of heat entering his voice.

“We’ve both made mistakes, Dane. You dumped coffee on Avery.”

“That,” he points at me, “was a fucking accident and you damn well know it. You told Scout I wasn’t good enough for her. You told me she wasn’t my business. You left her with me—time after time after time. And you never once had an issue with it, until we fell in love. Do you know how fucked up that is?”

He’s furious, and I don’t know why. I don’t understand why he’s this mad. “Explain it to me.” I say again.

“Fuck you, Grimes.” He snaps. “I’m good enough to be friends with her. I’m good enough to be the shoulder she cries on and to be her surrogate brother. I’m good enough to carry her secrets, but I’m not good enough to be with her? Fuck you to hell and back.” He stands and I sit still, reeling.

Is that what he thinks?

Well of course it is. I haven’t given him no reason to think otherwise.

“You know, I’ll do anything for you. Anything in the world. But I’m doing this for me. Scout and me—we’re good together. I won’t give that up because you think it’s a bad idea or I’m a douchebag.”

“I don’t want you to,” I say, hoarsely.

Dane hesitates, staring at me with narrowed eyes.

I sigh and shake my head. “She’s happier than I’ve ever seen her, man. And I know it’s because of you. You’re happy—when you aren’t yelling at me. Why do you think I’d want to take that from you?”

He gives me a flat stare and I nod. “Ok, so I get why you’d think that.” I hesitate, and then say, “I’m a shitty brother, man. I get that. I’m going to try to be better—Scout deserves better.”

“You are,” Dane agrees and I choke on my laughter. His eyes sparkle when he grins at me, and the last of the tension vanishes. My best friend is grinning at me, and I haven’t seen that—not really—in almost a month. “She doesn’t need you to be her safe place,” Dane says. “She’s got me for that.”

I nod, and stand. “She does. And she’s a lucky girl.”

Dane blinks, startled and I walk backward a few steps. “Think you can leave her home alone tomorrow night?”

“Why?”

“I want your opinion. I need to go shopping.” I say, “For Avery.”

A slow smile spreads across his face and I add, turning away, “Don’t get any ideas, Guillot.”

He laughs, a low rumble that makes me grin as I leave.

TRIPP
(My Way Series #2)
by: HJ Bellus
Synopsis:

Lacey’s Story…

Covering up pain is easy. It’s keeping it tucked away that’s hard. I’ve always needed the cover of tattoos to hide the nasty past that leached its way into me, tainting me beneath my skin.
Not the shiny, trendy tats, but the ugly broken kind, meant to keep the world at bay. If they weren’t enough, then my piercings, foul mouth and crazy hair usually did the trick. Life had taught me to never follow the rules, because when you do, you get burned.
My life was perfectly imperfect until Tripp…
Our relationship is what most would describe as fuel meeting fire. We were both hell bent on burning each other to the ground. Tripp was sexy as hell, a charismatic beast, and soon became one of my best friends. We shared a love of ice cream and tattoos as we blazed our own path that could only lead to a beautiful train wreck.
The only question left is, will we set the countryside ablaze with our hot tempers and foul mouths? Or will we paint our own happy ending filled with all the gushy shit normal people crave?

Kiss Me at Midnight by Diane Alberts….Release Day Blitz & Review

KissMeATMidnight cover

Amazon  ~  B&N

Synopsis:

Her New Year’s resolution was seduction…

Doctor Ashley Hanes has one mission and one mission only—end her annoyingly long dry streak and ring in the New Year with a bang. Literally. When her long lost and oh-so-sexy ex-best friend, Ethan Pierce, shows up as if he hadn’t broken her heart all those years ago, suddenly she doesn’t want to bring home just any man. She wants Ethan.

What should have been one night of blow-your-mind make-up sex quickly turns into another. And another. Before long, Ashley thinks maybe she and Ethan should reunite for good. If only the elusive bachelor will stop running from his tortured past and trust a future in Ashley’s arms…

My review:

Kiss Me At Midnight is the latest work from author Diane Alberts (aka: Jen McLaughlin).  I am a huge fan of Diane’s work and was so excited to get my hands on an early copy of this book.  Well, somebody better turn the heat down in here because this book is smoking hot!  I loved it!

Ashley Hanes is NOT here at this hometown bar, on New Years Eve, looking for her old sort-of-almost-high-school-flame Ethan.  Nope.  She’s not hoping against hope that he will stop here while in town visiting his family for the holidays.  She’s also totally fooling herself.  She would do anything to have a chance to see him again and tell him exactly what she thinks of him and how he totally cut her out of his life for no apparent reason their senior year of high school.  She had a huge crush on him back then and would love a chance to tell him that he had blown it with her.  All that bravado goes out the window when he actually does walk into the bar and she is dumbstruck with how gorgeous a man he’s become.  Plans have changed and instead of giving him a piece of her mind, she’d much rather give him a piece of ass….hers to be exact.  The question is:  will she be able to give him that without giving him a piece of her heart?

Having a thing for redheads thanks to his high school crush Ashley, Ethan has his sights set on the strawberry blonde sitting at the end of the bar he’s just walked in to.  He’d rather be anywhere but here, in this bar, on New Year’s Eve, in his godforsaken hometown but now that he was here, he’d make the most of it.  Some fun with this girl is just what the doctor ordered.  Talk about a shock when this very redhead turns out to be the redhead that has haunted his memory since leaving her behind nine years ago.  The glare she’s sporting is a clear indication that she hasn’t forgotten how he behaved those last few months and his only desire it to apologize and make up for lost time.  What better way to do that then with some hot, intense, mind-blowing sex? Hopefully he could leave his heart out of the mix….but knowing him, there’s no way that would be possible when it came to Ashley.

Oh.  My.  Inferno.  This by far is the hottest work of Diane’s and holy mother of all things hot and sexy, it was delicious! What made it easy for this story to fall right into the smoking hot scenes was that the formality of meeting/getting to know one another wasn’t a factor.  The history was already there between Ethan and Ashley so we can get right to it.  Ashley wasn’t shy at all about what she wanted and it’s always a pleasure to read a strong, no-nonsense heroine.  Ethan is an alpha in the bedroom with many endearing facets to his personality that I really enjoyed.  What started out between them as mutually agreed upon no-strings sex turns into an awakening of feelings neither one wants to admit to and it was an emotional ride towards the end.  A ride I thoroughly loved, of course!  The ending of this story was so special and I was crying big fat happy tears.  Give me a book that goes from scorching to sweet and you’ve given me a winner!

I’ve got say, Diane just keeps getting better with every book she writes.  I will continue to look forward to her work and recommend Kiss Me At Midnight to anyone looking for a great read with plenty of heat and emotion.  Thank you, Diane!  Can’t wait to see what you have in store for us next!

Book Blitz & Excerpt….Meet Blade by Paula Altenburg

Book links:

Amazon  ~  Barnes and Noble  ~  The Book Depository

Synopsis:

Passionate and headstrong, half-demon Raven is nearly executed on the orders of her fundamentalist stepfather. She escapes from the burning stake using the gifts of her otherworldly heritage and the help of a mortal stranger named Blade. Now she’s set on revenge, and only quiet, intense Blade stands in her way.

A retired assassin weary of the weight of his past, Blade has crossed the desert to seek out a new life. His journey is interrupted when his conscience demands he help Raven find an old friend who can help her. Saving her from her need for revenge and delivering her into the hands of loved ones means he’s one step closer to redemption.

But as Blade’s sense of duty becomes something more and threats, both mortal and immortal, stalk the woman he can’t abandon, he could very well fall back into the life he’s trying so hard to escape.

Excerpt:

Ruby drifted up to the bar not long after, smoothing the muslin of her gown over her hips. She wore her red hair high on her crown, with a few long, loose curls trailing against the creamy skin of her neck. The fine lines around her smoky gray eyes made her look wise rather than old. Blade often wondered at her true age. Not that it mattered to him.

“Sapphire has gone upstairs with a young man her age,” he said to her.

“So there’s going to be trouble,” Ruby sighed, interpreting what he did not need to say. “If she was as smart as she is attractive, she’d know enough to leave the young ones to the older women.”

“Maybe he’ll take her away from all this.” Blade kept a neutral expression. He was curious what Ruby’s reaction to that statement would be.

She did not laugh. Instead, she appeared to mull over his words. “She would have to want to go. But I’m very much afraid that Sapphire enjoys being a whore too much.”

Blade wondered why that surprised him. He’d always assumed the women did what they did because they had no choice. It had never occurred to him that they might like it.

“Do you enjoy it?” he asked. They knew each other too well for him to worry the question would offend her.

She leaned on the bar, propping her chin in one of her hands. Her gray eyes grew thoughtful as she considered the question. The sounds of the saloon dimmed around them. “I like being a businesswoman. There’s a difference.”

She lifted her tray and went back to work. As he watched her move around the room, her head dipping occasionally to talk to someone, he thought again about asking her to marry him. He could do worse.

She could do better.

Synopsis:

She’s totally off limits, but this rocker wants a taste…

Jamison Matthews has lusted after Ryder Montgomery since she was a preteen. But now that Ryder and her brother’s band, Shaken Dirty, has made it huge, she’s just one of many pining for the brooding lead singer. Too bad Ryder still sees her as a little sister. Not that it matters. Her brother would never allow it, and the last thing Jamison wants is to be another notch on a rock star’s bed post. Even if it’s Ryder’s.

Ryder doesn’t deserve happiness. After his fame destroyed his last girlfriend, he swore he’d never fall in love again. So when Jamison, the girl he’s been in danger of loving for years, joins the band on the road, he’ll do anything to deny the sparks between them—even after one hot night together. But Jamison is determined to show Ryder that he’s worthy of love—her love—and that she’s all grown up…and ready to play.

Excerpt:

Onstage, the band launched into “Awake,” one of the power ballads that had made them famous. The crowd screamed their approval and so did she. Totally not her typical modus operandi, but she couldn’t help it. Something about listening to Ryder croon the darkly haunting lyrics had her knees trembling and her heart beating much too quickly. If she closed her eyes, she could do what all the other women in the audience were doing and pretend that he was singing straight to her.

So much better than remembering he’d written these heartfelt words for another woman. For Carrie, who had killed herself and broken his heart so many years before. Her own heart ached at the thought. For him. Always for him. At twenty-nine, Ryder had already been through more darkness and despair than any one person should have to handle.

“Awake” finally came to a close, the last note hanging in the air for long, tension-fueled seconds. Then the band fell silent and the audience did the same, as if they were all holding their breaths. Ryder lowered his guitar, shuffled, and stamped his feet once, twice. It was a familiar gesture, one years of experience had taught her was his way of shaking off excess emotion. Again her heart twisted. It devastated her that more than ten years after the fact he was still eaten up by what had happened. Still determined to bury it under a bunch of layers that not only insulated him from his pain but also hid the real Ryder so deep inside the public Ryder that she wondered sometimes if he even existed anymore. Or if the boy who had held her while she cried, who had let her whisper her pre-adolescent fears without ever making fun of her, had disappeared forever.

She searched for him in that one endless moment.

Looked for him in the obsidian eyes that arrowed to the heart of the crowd even as they barricaded his own emotions.

Combed through her own memories and expectations in an effort to see Ryder as he really was instead of how he portrayed himself.

And when his eyes—his crazy, beautiful eyes—met hers, she found him. Seconds passed, long, intense seconds where she lost the ability to hear or breathe or even think. All she could do was look into Ryder’s eyes, at the feral heat boiling up and out of them, and want.

She smiled at him, waved. He snarled back. But it wasn’t a leave-me-alone snarl. No, definitely not. It was his I-want-to-fuck-you-up-against-a-wall snarl—she knew it well, had seen it directed at a lot of women through the years—and her knees gave way when she realized that this time, finally, it was directed at her. It didn’t matter that there was no sign of recognition in his eyes, no knowledge that the woman he was looking at like that was actually her. Jamison. For one moment, he wanted her the way she’d always wanted him.

It was more than enough.
