Synopsis:

Carmen always had a wild streak about her while growing up in this small town. Everyone use to say her only saving grace in this world was her best friend Walker who tried to keep the flighty girl grounded. But life was too big for her to live in this one stop light kind of town; she had dreams and wants that could take her anywhere but staying there. Anything was better than being stuck in the perpetuating cycle of being born and dying in this hell hole she called the reality of a small town girl.

Walker was the only anchor that could hold her home, she lived for that boy. So how do you explain to someone that staying there would only suffocate the possibilities of making a better life for oneself? Running away was the only option, and leaving a piece of her heart with him would keep her strong out in the real world, at least she hoped it would.

After years of trying to make it on her own, struggling through life and trying to stay clean, the only reality she sees at surviving now is going back to the place she tried so hard to break free from. Unsure if her old life is willing to accept the choices she has made, the lone thought that matters to her is hoping she still has the only man she has counted on her entire life in her corner. You can always go home, but will they be willing take you back?

Interview part 4 of 4:

What does your Danny Shanklin think about you?

Would Danny want to hang out with you, the author, his creator?

I know he’d enjoy a chili or two. But I like to wash mine down with a beer and Danny doesn’t drink anymore. We share the same taste in music too: Townes Van Zandt, Dylan & Shawn Mullins. But I think Danny would find my home life  – which I love -too restricting for him. He’s much more of a restless soul.

What was the hardest scene in Hunted to write, and what was the easiest?

The toughest was a scene where Danny realizes that he has failed to save someone very dear to him. Protecting those weaker than himself is right at the core of his character, so I needed to judge the impact of such a failure just right. The easiest part of Hunted to write was the sequence of scenes where Danny is being chased by hundreds of cops through central London in broad daylight. I basically ran him through all the streets I know best,  past places I used to work and hang out, so I very much felt that I was there with him every frenzied step of the way.

When can we expect the continuation of the Danny Shanklin series to be available in the US.  Can you give us any hints of what’s up for Shanklin.

I’ve just finished Wanted, the sequel to Hunted. It will be out in the US next year. All I’ll say is that life doesn’t get any easier for Danny. Maybe I should be kinder to him in the third book? Instead of having him on the run, I could just describe him having a really nice meal and watching TV?

BOOK COVERS

I love book covers. It’s one of my favorite things about self-publishing. Talking to my cover artist is one of my favorite things in the world. I spend a lot of time before I send my thoughts to Melissa (The Illustrated Author)—trying to determine what theme and overall feeling of the cover. Eventually, I quit and send her something incredibly basic like “Can it be sexy and set in the fall??” and she gives me the text equileveant of a pat on the head. A few days later, she sends me back something so perfect, it blows me away.

So what do I love about this cover? Everything? Specifically, there are no eating faces kisses (win!) but the embrace is sexy and almost desperate—something that is very true of the characters. The colors of the trees and the beams of sunlight are particularly gorgeous and eye catching. But what totally sold me on the cover was the font. I loved how it was stark and beautiful and a little bit twisted and turned around. It fit the mood of the story perfectly.

You tell me—what’s your favorite cover and why?? I’d love to hear from you here or on Twitter @NazareaAndrews

Synopsis:

The award-winning debut in the Highland Legend Series:

Isobel MacInnes wakes up in present-day California, lunches in medieval Scotland, and by ten days’ end, falls in love with a man and his country, only to lose them in a heart-wrenching twist of fate . . .

Found in the arms of her second soul mate . . .

Forced to balance the delicate strands of time between two millennia . . .

Shocked by revelations rewriting the very foundations of history . . . of everything.

Isobel, a rising-star archaeology student, is dropped into two ancient worlds without warning . . . or her permission. Her fiery spirit resists the dependency thrust upon her. Amid frustration at her lack of control, she helplessly falls in love. Twice.

She struggles to adjust to the unimaginable demands of two leaders of men—a laird in the thirteenth-century Highlands and a Pict chieftain in a more ancient Scotland. Isobel transforms from an academic, hell-bent on obtaining archaeological recognition, to a woman striving to care for those she loves, and ultimately . . . into a fearless warrior risking everything to protect them.

My review:

I have always loved stories rich with Highland legend, so when Kat asked if I would be interested in reading Forged in Dreams and Magick, I jumped at the chance.  Well, this may very well be my favorite Highland adventure yet! It was phenomenal!

Isobel MacInnes has always had a deep-seated love for all things ancient.  That love began as a child and after visiting the Highlands and her dying grandfather, she returns back to her position as Assistant to the head of the Archaeology Department at UCLA with a very interesting treasure. Isobel stumbled across a mysterious box that had unfamiliar markings and appeared to be made from materials she had never seen.  Kind of strange considering she works with ancient artifacts. Her quest to learn more about this box has her reaching out to her friend, Iain Brodie.  He’s a cinema heartthrob but also shares her love of Highland history, having come from Scotland, and competes in the modern day Highland Games.  It’s where they met and where she realized she had seen the markings from the box before…..the broach that held Iain’s plaid during the games.  When she asked for his help, Isobel knows she will have to deal with Iain’s flirtations, and was prepared to rebuff him (Sure, she’s attracted to him, but she doesn’t have time for a relationship) What she wasn’t prepared for was his somewhat closed off reaction when he sees the box…or what happens when they kiss while holding the box.

Isobel suddenly finds herself in the thirteenth-century Highlands…with Iain.  Only thirteenth century Iain seems very much at home and apparently this is where Isobel will also be calling home now.  Talk about a shock to the system! Once the shock wears off, Isobel realizes she has a mystery to solve and knows the box and some sort of magic are responsible.  In her journey to find answers, she realizes she’s found love.  Love in her Highland warrior and love in the history she is now currently living.  Was this where she was truly meant to be?

Isobel will be thrown into another time, yet again, before she can contemplate that question.  Thrown even further back in time, and away from the man, and time, she has fallen in love with, Isobel finds those very same things here in a more ancient time with a Pict chieftain.  Is it possible to feel the same things toward two different men in two different times? What is her role in all of this magical mystery? Never have answers been so needed for Isobel.

This story was a magical journey from start to finish with so many amazing twists and turns throughout that I was on the edge of my seat while reading.  The mystery surrounding this “magic box” and why Isobel was thrown around like a time traveling rag-doll was kept artfully hidden through the story and was revealed at just the right moment…when the fate of the people Isobel has grown to love was held in the balance.   Isobel’s story is one filled with love, passion and self-discovery.  She realizes nothing is as what it seems and has to push aside her “scientific brain” in order to wrap her head around what is happening.  Iain Brodie is so yummy and pure alpha Highland male but also is willing to bend when Isobel needs it most in order to help her find her way in a world he has always had the knowledge of.  Velloc is Isobels’ other love interest when she is thrown back into the Pict times and is such a worthy hero.  A strong, caring, loyal and fierce warrior it was easy to see how Isobel could love both men.  I wasn’t sure I would be ok with her loving two men at first, but I grew to love both men for their similar qualities as well as their differences.  It was really, really tough to try to predict how the story was going to go and that was one of the treats about this book.  There were so many unknowns and it was a fantastic mystery almost until the very end.  One of my favorite things was the lush description of the lands and times.  Kat painted such a beautiful picture that I could feel the furs, smell the foods and see the beautiful landscapes.  It was a gift to be able to read such gorgeous narrative.

This is a series I am so lucky to have been introduced to and will be looking forward to reading more from and I highly recommend if you want to be whisked away from the norm and pulled into a world of Highland fantasy filled with magic and mystery.  Thank you, Kat, for a fantastic read!

Book summary:

Desperate to break free…

I’ve spent my entire life under my father’s thumb, but now I’m finally free to make my own choices. When my roommate dragged me to my first college party, I met Finn Coram and my life turned inside out. He knows how to break the rules and is everything I never knew I wanted. A Marine by day and surfer by night, he pushes me away even as our attraction brings us closer. Now I am finally free to do whatever I want. I know what I want. I choose Finn.

Trying to play by the rules…

I always follow orders. My job, my life, depends on it. I thought this job would be easy, all the rules were made crystal clear, but when I met Carrie Wallington, everything got muddy. She’s a rule I know I shouldn’t break, but damn if I don’t inch closer to the breaking point each time I see her. I’m ready to step out of line. And even worse? I’m living a lie. They say the truth will set you free, but in my case…

The truth will cost me everything.

Excerpt:

I grabbed my stuff and headed toward the store. After a quick conversation with the employee, I came back out and found Finn standing there, his hands in his pockets and his shoulders hunched. I held my hand out and waited for him to take it with bated breath. I don’t know why I did that. We weren’t dating. We weren’t even friends yet. I couldn’t resist. He stared at my hand for a second, muttered something under his breath, and closed his fingers around mine. A shot of electricity skittered up my arm, making me jump slightly.

What the heck had that been?

His eyes darkened and something weird twisted in my belly in response. Something I was only loosely familiar with. Desire. I was a virgin, but I’d read about sex enough times to recognize the sensation. And I would bet my favorite pair of Converses that he was feeling it, too.

“Ready?” he asked, his voice deeper than usual.

“So ready,” I said, peeking up at him through my lashes. “I’ve always wanted to ride one, but my dad wouldn’t let me.”

He perked up. “Maybe we shouldn’t. You know, if your dad would be mad.”

“Oh, please. I’m nineteen.” I tugged him toward a Harley I could only assume was his. “I’ll ride what I want to ride.”

He groaned under his breath. “I bet you will.” When we reached the bike, he grabbed the helmet off the handle and slid it over my head. I tried to pull back, not wanting to wear the ugly thing in front of him, but he didn’t let me. “My bike. My rules. You wear the helmet.”

“What about you?”

“I’ll be fine.” He gently slid the helmet the rest of the way down over my head, making sure to keep my hair out of my eyes as he did so. My heart did a weird little flip flop at the way he watched me, his eyes hot and his lips soft. His touch, gentle as it might seem, held a strength behind it.

“How do I look?”

“Perfect,” he said lightly. Then he climbed onto the bike and looked over his shoulder at me. That look he gave me was the look that so many books described. Like he was inviting me to fall into his arms and stay there forever. God, I wanted to. His muscles flexed, teasing me with his perfection. “Climb on and hold on as tight as you can.”

I swallowed hard and slid on the back of the bike.

My review:

Out Of Line is a work from Jen McLaughlin….an author I also know (and love) by the name of Diane Alberts.  As it stands, I am a big fan of Diane and after reading Out of Line, I am now a HUGE fan.  This.  Book.  Was.  Incredible.

*I will warn you that this review may be slightly spoilery, but if you’ve read the first 25 pages that Jen has posted on her site, it won’t be*

As a politician’s child, Carrie Wallington is used to being in the spotlight.  As a daughter, Carrie Wallington is used to be overprotected.  As a college student, Carrie wants to shed all of it and just be. She’s tired of being watched by security and never being able to just live her life.  It’s understandable that her dad worries and wants her safe but it’s unreasonable to always have people watching her.  So, when she leaves for college and her father agrees to let her go sans security, she’s more than just a little shocked.  Now was her time to live.  She was never one to get carried away and always had a good head on her shoulders.  Studied, got good grades, was always aware of her surroundings and rarely drank and partied.  So when she meets the deliciously handsome surfer, Finn, while getting some air at one of the only parties she’s ever been to, she knows he’s exactly what she’s been missing out on.  And he’s exactly the kind of guy who can show her how to live. Now’s the chance to make up for lost time and Finn’s just what she needs.

Finn Coram is not sure what he’s gotten himself into on his latest assignment.  He’s a marine with an outstanding record that’s caught the eye of a politician with a daughter in need of protection.  It just so happens that he also looks the part of a college surfer boy, too.  So here he is, on a college campus, with strict orders to keep an eye on Carrie while looking the part of a college kid….while keeping it all a secret Great.  Unfortunately for Finn, and his exemplary record, all of the rules he knows he should be following completely go out the window when he sees Carrie on the beach at a frat party.  She’s much more than the file he had on her and the minute he starts talking to her, his brain and mouth completely ignore each other and he finds himself making plans to teach Carrie how to surf.  Finn knows this is trouble and he’s wondering how long he will be able to keep Carrie at arm’s length….and in the dark as to his true identity of her personal protector.

Carrie and Finn start on a journey of friendship that turns into so much more than that…and is constantly threatened by the truth.  Carrie would be devastated to know Finn is part of the security she is eager to be rid of.  Finn knows that every minute he spends with her, he is falling for her more and more….he also knows it’s completely forbidden.  With so much on the line, will they be able to keep what they’ve found?

A few times in my life, I’ve voraciously devoured a book and was just about to finish it and stopped.  Just stopped reading when I got to the last few chapters.  Why?  Why the hell would I do that?  Well, it’s because I cannot bear the thought of finishing the book and the experience it has brought me.  THIS was one of those books.  I got to 85% after reading it all day and I just couldn’t go on.  I put it down for the next whole day, and when I finally picked it back up and I savored every last word.  Finn and Carrie’s story was just so amazing.  I was hooked after chapter 3 and completely fell in love with Finn.  Yes, he’s got a body made for sin and is gorgeous but he’s also honorable and loyal and has such a way about him that I rank him as one of my all-time favorite characters.  He had me laughing out loud while reading his internal dialogue and the next minute had my chest physically aching with his growing love for Carrie and his denial that he would ever be good enough for her.  He knows it’s his duty to protect Carrie and he knows he can’t have a relationship with her.  But hey, they say the road to hell is paved with good intentions, right?  He killed me.  He’s just one of those guys any gal would love.  Carrie was just as amazing a character as Finn.  She’s smart and giving and stands up for the underdog in life.  She volunteers and helps those in need, but does it anonymously.  She’s a girl we would all be lucky to know.  She’s also innocent and that adds to her charm.  They balance each other out beautifully and I was cheering them on from the very start.  The emotional ups and down they weather are intense and real and so very believable.  This is a story that will stay with me and one I will be re-reading as soon as I can.  Maybe this time I will read it all the way through without stopping……eh, who the hell am I kidding?

Jen, thank you.  Thank you for giving us Carrie and Finn.  Thank you for giving me one of those books that I couldn’t bear to finish.  It may sound corny to some, but for me, that’s the sign of a kick ass book.  I cannot WAIT for more and will be chomping at the bit for book two in the series!

Blog Tour & Review….Declan’s Cross by Carla Neggers

Welcome to my stop on the blog tour for Declan’s Cross by Carla Neggers!

image001

Book links:

Amazon  ~  Barnes & Noble  ~  Goodreads

Synopsis:

An escape to an idyllic Irish seaside village is about to turn deadly in this riveting new novel by master of romantic suspense Carla Neggers.

For marine biologist Julianne Maroney, two weeks in tiny Declan’s Cross on the south Irish coast is a chance to heal her broken heart. She doesn’t expect to attract the attention of FBI agents Emma Sharpe and Colin Donovan—especially since a Donovan is the reason for her broken heart.

Emma and Colin are in Ireland for their own personal retreat. Colin knows he’s a reminder of everything Julianne wants to escape, but something about her trip raises his suspicion. Emma, an art crimes expert, is also on edge. Of all the Irish villages Julianne could choose…why Declan’s Cross?

Ten years ago, a thief slipped into a mansion in Declan’s Cross. Emma’s grandfather, a renowned art detective, investigated, but the art stolen that night has never been recovered and the elusive thief never caught.

From the moment Julianne sets foot on Irish soil, everything goes wrong. The well-connected American diver who invited her to Ireland has disappeared. And now Emma and Colin are in Declan’s Cross asking questions.

As a dark conspiracy unfolds amid the breathtaking scenery of Declan’s Cross, the race is on to stop a ruthless killer…and the stakes have never been more personal for Emma and Colin.

My review:

Declan’s Cross is the third book in the Sharpe & Donovon Series by author Carla Neggers and admittedly, the first book of Carla’s that I have read.  After reading this third installment, I am happy to say that I will be putting the others in the series on my to-read list.

This is unlike the stories that I am used to reading lately in that the focus wasn’t on only one couple.  There were a few couples as well as other single characters and they all played equally important roles in the whole picture.

Julianne Maroney is a waitress who leaves her hometown in Maine to escape a broken heart as well as begin the fulfillment of her oceanographer dreams.  She is supposed to be meeting up with a woman named Lindsay Hargraves.  The two gals recently met when Lindsey was visiting her father in the same hometown as Julianne.  Their quick and easy friendship was only strengthened when they learn of their mutual love of the ocean, sea life and diving.  Ireland awaits the two young women….

Special Agents Colin Donovon and Emma Sharpe were already in Ireland when Colin receives a call from his younger brother, Andy, informing him that his ex-girlfriend, Julianne, will be headed their way.  Not really seeing the relevance of Andy’s phone call, they were just about to dismiss the coincidence of travel destination until Andy mentions Julianne will be staying in Declan’s Cross.  Emma’s interest is suddenly piqued.  That town was the setting of a famous art theft ten years earlier, and a case her grandfather had been working on for years.  Maybe Colin and Emma should make their way to Julianne and welcome her…..

When Julianne arrives in Ireland, things don’t go exactly as planned.  She can’t get in touch with Lindsay and after finding her way to Declan’s Cross, she runs into Emma and Colin.  What were the odds? She meets a few local characters along the way and soon realizes there is way more action going on in this sleepy Irish town than she could ever have dreamed.  Lindsay is missing and is possibly tied to the art theft. Suddenly Julianne’s broken heart and feelings for Andy seem like a lifetime ago.  It sure doesn’t feel like it was just a week ago.

Together, each in the cast of characters all play a role in attempting to solve a decade old Irish mystery.  Pretty exciting for a town filled with more sheep than people.

This really was a who-done-it from the very first chapter.  I enjoyed trying to put the pieces together while I was reading and enjoyed that the story focused on numerous characters, rather than one main couple or family.  Again, I hadn’t read the first two books in the series and felt that maybe if I had, I would have more of a relationship with the characters.  I enjoyed the banter between the Donovon brothers and loved how Carla wrapped things up, for the most part, in the last few chapters.  We are still left with a bit of a mystery and it definitely has me curious to see what will happen next in the series.  I say that’s Mission Accomplished when it comes to keeping readers invested in a series!

Thank you, Ms. Neggers, for a mysterious read with amazing description of the Irish countryside and of the colorful characters! Count me in for the future adventures of Donovon & Sharpe!

When Ivy Callahan returns to her hometown as mayor, she doesn’t expect much to have changed. But now her ex-fiancé is the town planner, the biggest business is closed, and the only store interested in Celebration, NY is a Megamart. On top of it all, the liaison for the big, bad, box store is Marcus Weaver, her childhood crush. And he’s still as dangerously delectable as ever.

Marcus unwillingly spent his teens in Celebration with his vindictive, drunken uncle. As far as Marcus is concerned, the town’s only use is to cement his rise up the corporate ladder. He needs that Megamart opened, and Ivy is his ticket. But the sexy, stubborn mayor could also be his downfall.

As the unemployed townspeople put on the pressure, Ivy needs to do something. With a fresh downtown-renewal project in the works, Ivy could stop Marcus and his Megamart before they kill the town’s spirit. But with sparks flying between Ivy and Marcus, they each need to decide what’s more important: their careers or their hearts.

Excerpt:

He blinked at her. “Who are you?”

“I’m Ivy Callahan. Who are you?”

He froze. Callahan. The mayor’s daughter? The last time he’d seen Ivy, she was a freckly kid in braces, sitting with her friends in the corner of the drugstore and giggling behind her hand. But now? Gorgeous. And probably pissed at him, despite the fact that he’d just saved her from falling on her face. He stopped, glancing behind him. Where was Alberta Fields? He needed a buffer.

Like a beacon, she walked over to them. “That was a close call, but you didn’t fall, so all’s well that ends well. Ivy, this is Marcus Weaver. Can you believe it?”

Ivy’s mouth dropped open. She turned to Alberta and whispered something in her ear. Alberta nodded.

Ivy cocked her head to the side and looked at Marcus. “Oh. Well, I’d like to speak with you. Walk into city hall with me.”

He raised an eyebrow at Alberta, who shrugged and turned to the crowd. “Inside, everybody,” she snapped out in her practiced schoolteacher voice.

Marcus followed Ivy up the steps, letting his gaze bounce over her killer legs and snug suit. Ivy Callahan. Wow. She sure had grown up.

Ivy turned, a flash of annoyance crossing her face. “You are the investor Herman’s been talking about, right?”

“Yes, but what does that have to do with…” Marcus gave her an automatic smile. “Never mind. What was with the welcome wagon back there? Are you…” He searched for an appropriate word, but he couldn’t think of anything that didn’t sound ridiculous. “Famous?”

Ivy raised an eyebrow. “Depends on who you ask.”

“I see.” Marcus crossed his arms. “In any case, where’s your dad? I’d like to speak with him before the meeting starts.”

“You would? How come?”

“Because I wanted to say hello.”

She flicked a piece of imaginary lint from her spotless red suit. “Great. I’ll let him know. Anything else you need?”

Okay, so she was pissed. But she didn’t have to interrogate him. He had saved her from falling on her ass, after all. Marcus leaned forward, not even trying to keep the hint of condescension from his voice. “Look. It’s been fun chatting with you, but I’d really like to talk to the mayor. Okay, sweetheart?”

She went still for a brief second and then a slow grin spread over her face. “Sure, honey. Go ahead and talk to the mayor. You’re looking right at her.”

From the Stage to the Page

I’ve never had a normal job, and there have been times that I’ve dreamed of working in a cubicle, pulling in a predictable paycheck, going to a break room for birthday cake, and trotting out after work for happy hour with friends. It’s something I’ve never experienced, although I did work as a temp in a lot of offices in Chicago. Lots of people do temp work at one time or another, but theater people? I’ve never met one who hasn’t temped. But temping doesn’t count when temping is your life. Theater work is the ultimate temp work and although I didn’t realize it during my twenty year adventure as a costume designer, theater prepared me to be a romance writer.

There’s nothing like throwing together 300 costumes in three weeks to prepare a girl for deadlines. The only way I stayed organized was to obsessively re-write my three page to-do list (which was separated into five categories) every night before I left the costume shop. I did this on and off for years, because I mostly designed costumes for musicals.

Now, I’m not saying writing deadlines are a piece of cake for me, because they’re not. But being creative under pressure? Yeah, I’ve done that. There was that one time at band camp…err, I mean, during a production of Camelot when I was informed that a character had to fly. And light up. And wear a body microphone. And could I get that ready super-quick-thanks? If I’d had the time, she would have been professionally fitted into a theatrical flying harness, but time wasn’t on my side. Like, at all.

So my solution involved a diaphanous (but not see through!) dress, some strings of fiber optic lights, a roll of electrical tape, a roll of surgical tape, a well-digger’s harness in extra small (chorus girls are teeny) and a big box of maxi pads strategically placed for actor comfort while she was suspended over the audience pretending to be a fairy. And singing notes high enough to shatter glass, with a smile on her face. She was a trouper, and I admired her.

I love to write about women like her- not necessarily actors, but women with a sense of adventure and an appreciation of the weird. I love heroines who fly by the seat of their pants. (Ha, ha.) And I love creating worlds for them to inhabit. Of course, true heroines deserve nothing less than meltingly amazing heroes, so I write about them, too.

My background in theater has given me tons of stories like the flying fairy and inspiration to draw on for years. It’s also taught me to be creative under deadline and make lists like a champ. I just hope that I never get over my love affair with the kookier side of life. When I wrote Ivy Entwined, I kept kooky at the forefront of my mind, and my heroine, Ivy sure does thank me for it. Or I thank her. Yeah, that’s it. I’m proud of her and I would love for you to get to know her!

Synopsis:

Make-up artist to the stars. The favorite aunt. Dance teacher. Baby sister. Talented musician and song-writer.

Single.

Why did that word rank above the rest? Helen loved her family and understood they wanted her to have the real love they’d all found. It’s just that she’d found her someone special and learned to live without him. She’d been too young for the quirky, idealistic doctor-off to save the world-to notice. And, really, if she had it her way, he’d never know how she’d felt. Now, he was one of her best friends, a pen pal, losing him would be too much.

Seeing him at their parents wedding, Helen realizes the horrible truth: she still loves Joseph… which wouldn’t be so bad if she wasn’t in the situation she was in.

But she was. And her secret will change everything.

Will it destroy hope for a Hollywood happy ending too?

My Review:

Hollywood Homecoming is the third book in Sasha Summers’ Red Carpet Series and sadly, the first in the series that I have read.  Well, I can safely say that after reading this book, I now own all three books in the series because this book has got me hooked!  I absolutely loved, and devoured, this book!

If you asked Helen, she would tell you herself that she was totally content with her life.  She was a make-up artist in Hollywood, working with special effects and amazing people, she had a wonderful family and was dubbed the favorite aunt to her nieces and nephews.  The only piece of the puzzle missing was from her love life.  But, she was working on that.  She was finally coming to terms that the man she’s been in love with since her teen years, Joseph, would never return her affections, and she was certain that she was finally over him.  He was a doctor working in Africa and hadn’t been around in two years and that time away has helped strengthen her resolve to move on. But when he returns for their parents wedding, she realizes how wrong she was in thinking she was over him.  Her heart knew the truth…she would never, ever be able to forget Joseph.

Joseph is back and realizes just how much he’s missed in the past two years.  Things have changed.  The kids were bigger, he’d missed too many birthdays and holidays and has vowed to never miss that much time away from his family again.  They all had meant too much.  One person especially….only she had no idea how much she meant to him and how much he looked forward to the letters she sent him while he was away.  Would he have the courage to tell her how he felt?

Helen and Joseph have a long standing history that can either help or hinder the secret feelings the both harbor….and now, when they just might each be wiling to admit their feelings, they are blindsided with a situation that will change everything.

My interest in this story was piqued after reading the synopsis and it only grew after I started reading.  I adored Helen. ADORED! I don’t normally fall in love with the heroine in a story….I also don’t get along with a lot of real life women (ha!) but I absolutely love Helen!  She is so quirky and honest and refreshing.  She had me laughing at her sarcasm and had me bawling my eyes out during the last few chapters.  Full-on, tears running down my face, sobbing.  She is totally a gal I would love to hang out with and truly appreciates the love and goodness in life and looks for it in even the most dismal of situations.  Joseph is an all-around great catch.  He’s a handsome, intelligent, philanthropic doctor who has the biggest heart and loves without limit.  He is a guy anyone would feel lucky to know and is a prince among men.

The cast of characters, as a whole, is stellar.  An enjoyable and loving family anyone would want to be a part of.  As I had said earlier, I haven’t read the previous two books in the series but that didn’t affect how much I loved this story.  I never felt I was missing something or didn’t quite understand a reference.  I really appreciate when an author is able to do that for a reader.  You can enjoy one, or all, in the series without feeling lost.

There were more than a few memorable moments in this book and more than a few dreamy-sigh-worthy moments that I cherished…but the last few chapters absolutely slayed me.  I was a WRECK!  Talk about speed-reading to make sure things worked out ok….WHEW!  I can’t give you any spoilers so you’ll just have to trust me on this one.

Hollywood Homecoming was a title I texted to my best friend the second I finished reading it with the: “you MUST get this book right this instant!” text.  Yep, I loved it that much.  Thank you, Sasha, for an emotional and charming read filled with characters I won’t soon forget.

FeelingThis_Teaser#2

My review:

Feeling This is the debut novel from author Casey Blue. Kimber Maguire is tired.  She’s tired of dealing with entirely too many problems for entirely too long.  She should be enjoying her youth, not taking care of a sick alcoholic mother and sister who wants no part in their life.  But she’s trying to get out of this dead-end life.  She’s taking classes at the community college, working as a bartender and helping out with the family that has always been there for her and her mom.  Things are looking up from time to time.  One of those times is when a handsome, quiet stranger comes into the bar.  Little does Kimber know just how much this stranger will come to mean to her. Having grown up in the lap of luxury, Jordan Rhodes hasn’t ever known real suffering.  He’s smart, educated, wealthy and has the love of an amazing woman.  Things are going really well for him….until he starts to notice some changes in how the love of his life is behaving.  Concern drives him to speak to her family and he is entirely unprepared for the tragedy that is about to unfold.  Needing to get away he leaves his life behind in search of something new.  That something new comes in beautiful package serving him his beer in the small town he stopped in. Together, Kimber and Jordan have enormous personal demons to slay and they will need to relay on the strength they give one another to overcome.  They can do it…as long as they have each other. Overall, I really enjoyed this story.  I thought the emotional turmoil both Kimber and Jordan have to endure was really intense and well done.  Both of their situations deal with really powerful issues and as an intense as they both are, I feel they are extremely prevalent social issues many people deal with and can identify with. If I have one complaint, it’s that around the middle of the book, I lost my connection with Jordan and Kimber and it didn’t build as well as I thought it should have.  It was a tad rushed, I felt.  The ending, however, held up to what I had envisioned as their happy ending.  So as a whole package, I did enjoy it….and went through my share of tissues during the first half!  You know how much I love to cry during a book…strange to some, I’m sure, but I do love it! Thank you, Casey, for bringing emotional, intense and very real situations to life in your writing! I’m happy that Kimber and Jordan found each other and helped one another heal.

*Review note:  I received an advance copy of this title and I feel, on the off-chance that all mistakes weren’t corrected before publication, that I should mention I did notice more than a few punctuation errors within the work.  It was slightly distracting to me as a reader, and as a blogger, I don’t want my word to be tarnished by not warning fellow readers of the possibility of missed corrections in the final published work.  Thank you and in no means do I feel the errors should sway you in buying, and enjoying, this title.
