Synopsis:

Beckett Taylor is a murderer. His calling, his craft are destruction and intimidation—whether he wants it that way now or not. He left Poughkeepsie to keep his brothers safe, to keep Eve safe. Set up with happy lives to live, they’re better off without him, right?

But all his willpower crumbles when he hears his brother Blake’s frantic voice on the phone. An unknown enemy has moved in on his old territory, and Livia’s been taken. In an instant, Beckett knows it will take an attack only he and Eve can execute to bring her back. All his self-imposed embargoes are torn to shreds, perhaps along with the new man he’s struggled to become.

“Brother, call Eve. I’ll be there soon.”

In this emotional and action-packed sequel to Poughkeepsie, Debra Anastasia conjures a tale of love at its most raw and ragged. With Beckett and Eve, how could we expect anything less? But even when it’s messy, not magical, true love perseveres. Real love finds a way—for better or for worse until death does part.

My review:

Return to Poughkeepsie is the second book in author Debra Anastasia’s Poughkeepsie series and follows Poughkeepsie…..a book I adored so much so I got the tattoo (of course!). I have been DYING for this book and *dreamy sigh* Debra has done it again.  It was amazing.

Ok…so you all know I don’t do spoilers and there is a whole lot I need to be tight lipped about, so bear with me here while I do my best to not ruin one single second of this kick ass book for you…..

Beckett Taylor has left Poughkeepsie behind…physically that is.  There is no way he would ever be able to forget his brothers or Livia or Kyle…or Eve.  He knows leaving was best for everyone, even if it still hurt like hell to be away from the only family he’s ever known.  And don’t even get him started on missing Eve.  He left his heart with her.  He only hoped she had done what he wanted her to do and live a life without him filled with only the good things life had to offer.  Not murder, death and deceit, which were the only things he could offer.  He had settled in a small town and was doing the best he could, despite being a hardened killer.  He still quietly kept tabs on Poughkeepsie and had been hearing there was a new player in town trying to take over his former “businesses” in the area.  As long as nothing got too crazy, Beckett didn’t mind what was going on in the underbelly of society there.  Yep, things were going ok until he gets a phone call from Blake.  That phone call would change his life.  Livia had been kidnapped and Beckett knew he had no choice but to go home and save his family.  Yes, he was still a wanted man.  Yes, he knew if he saw Eve his heart would break all over again.  No, there was no way in hell he wouldn’t do whatever it took to get his brother’s wife back.

The crime-filled mess Beckett has to dive head first into to get Livia back was a way bigger and more “organized” mess than he ever expected.  One his Eve was somehow a part of, too.  Now, they’ve got to work their ass-kicking magic together to bring down a problem much bigger than just the kidnapping.   But there’s nothing Eve and Beckett do better than kick ass and take names.

Hold on, I’ve give my fingers a stretch here, they are a bit cramped….I have just finished reading this book, you see, and I swear my hands practically crushed my eReader from the death like, white-knuckled grip I had on it while reading.  Talk about one hell of a ride!  I don’t think I can even begin to list all of the emotions I experienced while reading this book.  Even if I did, it wouldn’t do this book justice.  Equally gut wrenching and tender, hard assed and feather soft, Debra rocked my world.  This book was a lot grittier than Poughkeepsie, and very fitting as it centers on Beckett and Eve.  They are both just as wounded and dark as before but seeing their emotions in depth was so heartbreaking.  If ever two wounded souls needed one another, these two are it.  I love Beckett and Eve.  They both had really awful lots in life and are the products of that.  The amazing quality about them is that even though they have seen and been a part of so much darkness and pain, they have true emotions and are capable of such love…even if it is buried deep.  Two broken pieces that make up an imperfect whole…but a whole nonetheless.

Blake and Livia are even more amazing than before…even through the horror of the kidnapping.  The tender moments between the two of them reminded me of exactly why I adore them and their unique and beautiful relationship.

Cole and Kyle….broke my heart.  Cole is just so freaking amazing and with every scene I grew to love him more.  His words to Kyle are full of his love for her.  He is real and wise and speaks from his soul.  Kyle is the same feisty and foul-mouthed girl I love but shows a soft side that was humbling to read.  I honestly love these two…big time.  They are going through an exceptionally rough time in this book and I cried my eyes out more than once for them.  My lips are sealed, but trust in Debra that she gives them happiness in the end….doesn’t she always?

Oh, and the even better thing?  There’s another Poughkeepsie book in the works!  Yep, if you didn’t already know, we will be getting book #3! *happy dance*

Now, I hope I was able to convey how amazing this book was without giving anything away.  Debra wrote one hell of an emotional, pulse pounding book and it’s one that you deserve to experience first hand without knowing what’s coming next….truly, it’s a gift to read a book like Return to Poughkeepsie.

Thank you, Debra, for giving us more Poughkeepsie.  Thank you for making me laugh, cry, gasp and smile like only you can do.  Love you, girl! (and my tattoo loves you, too!)

About the author:

debra author picDebra Anastasia is busy, just like every other mom. There’s dinner, the dogs, the two kids, and her violent IBS–which is under control thanks to medication except for occasional multi-tonal farts. Her first love and crowning achievement is her thriving career as the weirdest mom on the block.

Her writing started a decent handful of years ago when–along with the animals and humans in her house–the voices of characters started whispering stories in Debra’s ear. Insomnia was the gateway to plots that wouldn’t give up, wouldn’t let go. Now they stalk her everywhere. Halfway through making lunches, a twist takes hold and–fingers full of peanut butter–she finds somewhere, anywhere to write it down.

She’s eternally grateful to Omnific Publishing, which has now published four of her books: two in the Seraphim Series and two in the Poughkeepsie Brotherhood Series, as well as her novella, Late Night with Andres. That one is special because 100% of the proceeds go to breast cancer research. (So go get it right now, please!) She also very much appreciates her open-minded readers, who embrace everything she has to offer, with a focus on anti-heroes and bathroom humor.

Synopsis:

Elliot Halloran is running away. Away from her privileged Manhattan upbringing and a promising future at business school. Away from her family, which plummeted from A-list to disgraced after her criminal father’s atrocities were exposed. Despite the guilt Elliot feels for abandoning her family, she has no choice. She is too recognizable to live life as the person she has always been. So when an old family friend offers her a position as an economics instructor at Miami’s elite Alford Academy, Elliot jumps at the chance to distance herself from her past. She cuts her hair, changes her name, and vows never to speak of her old life again.

Keeping her identity hidden is harder than Elliot expected, especially with a roommate who seems to be on the verge of uncovering her true identity. As she fumbles through the opening chapters of her new life, Elliot encounters an entirely unforeseen obstacle: photography instructor Luke Poulos. Luke is sensitive and spontaneous. An art lover. Smart. Everything Elliot has ever wanted. Luke and Elliot’s connection deepens when she learns that he lost his parents in a car accident when he was a teenager. Like Elliot, Luke understands that life can shatter in an instant.

Elliot knows that a relationship with Luke is impossible; that he would never love her if he knew the details of her past. But as she struggles with whether to open herself to love or keep her true self locked away, Elliot learns that she’s not the only one with secrets.

Excerpt:

It’s been two years, maybe three, since I’ve snorkeled, but my body slips naturally into rhythm next to Luke’s. My legs propel me through the cloudy blue of the surf. My breath marks the time in steady puffs. I stay slightly behind him, my head at his torso. I can feel my body beginning to relax, leaving tension and fear and doubt to bleed into the water with every stroke.

I keep my head down, letting the patterns of light on the sandy floor lull me into a meditative state. Silvery fish dart at odd angles beneath us, making quick entrances and exits. I like feeling the warmth and safety of Luke’s body next to me without having to look for him. I like that he’s sharing this part of himself, this secret place that he’s kept for himself all these years. I like that he trusts me with it.

If he’s starting to trust me, starting to open up, why can’t I do the same? It’s not like he’s naïve. He’s experienced tragedy in his own life. He knows that families can be destroyed in an instant. But even as the thoughts flicker through my mind, I know that our situations aren’t the same. Luke’s family was killed in an accident, in circumstances completely out of their control. Mine exploded because of the things I did to betray my father. Luke’s said so many times that family is important to him. What would he think of me if he knew the role I’d played in destroying mine?

I feel Luke reach for my hand. With a single, swift kick, my body is next to his, my slippery skin grazing his torso. He intertwines his fingers with mine and squeezes. I squeeze back, tiny shivers running from my scalp to the tips of my toes. It’s unbelievable how he can turn me on with a single touch.

We swim side by side, fingers laced tight, until Luke slows and motions for me to look straight ahead. Just a few feet away looms the remains of a shipwreck. Despite the decades it’s been since the wreck, the sailboat still manages to look intact.

Luke catches my eye, and I know what he’s trying to say. Together, we gulp deep breaths and kick beneath the surface. He leads me around the boat’s perimeter, pointing out a plaque on the ocean floor that commemorates the wreck. I drag an index finger across the sandy bottom, tracing our initials. Around us, cobalt and chartreuse fish glide from bow to stern. I hold my breath until it feels like my body’s going to explode, then kick to the surface and blow the saltwater from my snorkel.

Luke rises soon after me, then tears off his mask and lifts his head above water. I do the same.

“Pretty cool, huh?” He tosses his head to one side, sending his wet curls flying.

            “Definitely,” I gasp. “Beautiful.”

“I think that’s what I like about it—how it’s like this broken thing that still manages to be amazing in its own way, you know? Like a message—there’s life after the wreck.”

A lump forms in my throat, and I can feel tears gathering. I hold my breath and let myself fall beneath the water line, allowing a few tears to slip out before I resurface.

“Tired? Out of breath? Need to tug your ear?” he teases, pushing my bangs off my forehead.

“Never!” I shriek, even though my legs are starting to ache.

“Come here.” Luke reaches for me, his strong arms encircling my waist. I can feel his legs churning beneath the surface. I drape my arms over his shoulders and wrap my legs around his torso. Our bodies rise and fall together in the water, our lips close.

Cupping the back of my neck with his palm, he lifts his mouth to my ear. “Relax. I’ve got you.”

I let my muscles go slack, let my body collapse against his. Even here, in the strange weightlessness of water, he is solid and strong, holding me up. My hands slip against his slick, wet body. Over his defined chest and arms, down his back. The man’s body is a work of art.

“Hold on,” Luke whispers before his mouth finds mine.

Synopsis:

Rain’s been washing blood off her hands for far too long. After five years, she accepts the fact that she”s still a little crazy but feels as if she’s finally gotten it all under control.

Parties, drugs, and sex flood Jude’s life, and music and scandal run through his veins. He’s the son of a rock god and grandson of a jazz legend. It’s no surprise that his own star is on the rise, and with so many groupies vying for his attention, his childhood best friend Rain keeps him anchored in reality.

She’s nothing like him–an art student with no idea of her own beauty, who would rather curl up with a sci-fi novel than party in the spotlight. Meanwhile, intense feelings rise to the surface, ones neither Rain nor Jude are prepared to deal with.

If their relationship has any chance for survival, she must finally confront the demons of her past, and he must face the addictions of the present. When the smoke clears, will they find that sex between best friends was a good idea, or will they discover they had been Flirting With Chaos the entire time?

Teaser

An intricate pattern of colorful tattoos decorated both of his arms. It was a mural of his life—stars that intertwined with musical notes; guitars interlocked into microphones; nude, big breasted angels riding hulky demons. Those arms and that face had adorned the covers of magazines for years. Now he represented a legend of rock history. To obtain his interview would mean lots of money and skilled maneuvering through his agent, publicist, bodyguards, entourage, and any of the other people that walled him away from society.

The Deceptive Significance of Cover Art

People who say they don’t judge a book by a cover are full of shit

Sorry.

I just wanted to set the mood and let you know that this blog post won’t be lathered in B.S. I won’t be shoveling fake opinions in an attempt to woo you into liking me enough to buy my books.

Nope.

Today, after two large coffees and not much sleep, I will be raw, honest, and probably piss you off. Not that I’m not usually honest, it’s just in this moment, I refuse to sugar coat this message.

Book covers matter. Sometimes more than the implementation of the whole plot-line.

Isn’t that fucked up?

For a writer, it’s disappointing and horrific that before someone gives your words and characters a chance. . .they judge your cover, something that is so outside of your creative process. . .it’s ridiculous

However, as a reader, I won’t buy a book if it isn’t pleasing to the eyes, well-executed, or grab my attention in some way. So although I’m annoyed about book covers representing the story as an author. . .oh I’m a complete contradictory person when it comes to me buying a book.

But let’s dig deeper. . .

Which book would you buy?

A)

B)

An unexpected experiment happened for me back in the fall of 2013 (so long ago). Amazon decided to finally regulate ebooks that they considered breaking their mature content rules. Basically, the site started deleting books that appeared to involve incest, pedophilia, bestiality, and all those things that pretty much disgust the normal population of people.

My novel The Babysitter was deleted because (I assume) it showed a “shadowy vagina” and because the woman looked like an underage girl with a teddy bear.
Yikes.

What is interesting is the next day I quickly grabbed a quick stock image that I believed represented the characters and the plot-line, then had an artist due the font. I more wanted my short story out there for my fans who were waiting on other books.

This became the cover. . .three hours later. . .The Babysitter was on the Erotica Bestseller’s list as if triggered by magic.

With the other cover, the novel sold five books a day. With the new cover, it sold a thousand books in two weeks. The book continued to rise up to the top twenty on the Erotica list and remained there for several weeks.

Is this confirmed proof that book covers matter?

No.
There are so many reasons why people decided to give my short story a try on that day and all of those reasons could have nothing to do with the cover.

However, do I place more significance on books covers these days?

Um. . .did you see the part about the book going from 5 sales to a thousand?

Synopsis:

The Jack prophesied: If the king loses his head, then the Queen with a Bleeding Heart would rule the Red Court until Time ceased to move forward. When a second carried on for infinity, every creature in Wonderland would tip their Hat to the misfit girl with a Boy’s name (or was it a boy with a Girl’s name?) who’d end the Reign of Terror. However, it all hinged on the One-Eyed Hare being able to convince an uninspirable Heir that the impossible was indeed possible—like stopping time—and that Love was worth a Beheading.

Heads would Roll…

Hearts would Break…

In the end, would it matter who Reigned?

My review:

Death of the Mad Hatter is the first work of author Sarah J. Pepper’s that I have read and being a book outside of my “norm” I was excited to give it a try.  This is a retelling of sorts of Alice in Wonderland but with a new spin on it.  Sometimes it pays to step outside of the typical reading box…this was one of those times.

High school senior Ryley Edgar was looking forward to getting out of high school and this small town.  He and his mom have move around a ton growing up trying to outrun the rumors of his father’s mental illness.  They had stayed in this town longer than any of the others and he was happy that no one had found out about his dad yet.  What Riley doesn’t know is that his dad isn’t exactly mentally ill.  Instead, his father had ties to Wonderland, a place Ryley unknowingly also has ties to.  A magical and twisted world that Ryley would soon learn a whole lot more about courtesy of the new student in school, Alice Mae.

Working, reluctantly, for The Queen of Hearts, Alice Mae’s mission is to find the heir to the Wonderland throne….and ultimately send him to his death.  All because the Queen had her husband killed and she wasn’t technically in line to rule.  Oh, and there’s the little problem of the Jack’s prophesy.  The problem arises when, somewhere in the middle of her mission, Alice Mae falls in love with Ryley….and he falls in love with her.

Between the Queen, the prophesy, two different realms and the emotional turmoil it seems like the odds are stacked against Alice Mae and Ryley.  But, like all things in Wonderland, nothing is as it seems and almost anything is possible.

I will admit that this book took a little bit of time to really get in to but when it finally clicked, I was hooked and couldn’t wait to see what was happening next.  The characters in this story range from evil and merciless to confusing and mischievous and at times innocently sweet.  I thought the love aspect between Ryley and Alice Mae was a fantastic addition to the story and was cheering for things to work out between them from the first few chapters.  They had a real love/hate thing going for the first half of the book that only added to the layers of story.  The end chapters had me on the edge of my seat wondering and hoping that things would work out for them and they can find their own Wonderland version of a happy ending….because, after all, anything is possible in Wonderland.

Overall this was an enjoyable, magical story with loads of twists and turns.  If you’re a fan of Alice in Wonderland and taking a trip down the rabbit hole, then by all means this is a book for you! Thank you, Sarah, for giving us Alice Mae, Ryley and their story!

Excerpt:

There were the types of girls who dressed for guys, the type who still played dress-up, the type who lived in sweatpants, and then there was an entirely different breed who wore mismatched socks with pride. This chick fell into the last category. Why anyone could possibly think bright orange and blue would go together, unless they were a Boise State fan, was beyond my thought process. Her shoes were quite possibly handcrafted a hundred years ago, and her tattered skirt looked as though she found it in a dusty box tucked away in an attic. However, the zebra patterned gloves actually appeared to be from this decade.

“Well, it’s rather fortunate that you didn’t dribble. Mr. Ruth would have a fit if he became familiar with the underside of your pet-soaked shoe,” the girl said, petting the stuffed animal’s head. Her accent was none that I’d heard before—and I’d lived in a lot of different places. She sounded like a British gal impersonating a southern bell. “It’d be quite regrettable if anything happened to him on the first day of school. He must have fallen out of his hidey-hole.”

“You named your stuffed rabbit, Mr. Ruth?”

She covered the bunny’s ears. “Rutherford is his real name, but he hates it and makes all the other rumperbabbits call him by his nickname.”

“Rumperbabbits?”

“Bunnies, rabbits, hares—rumperbabbits. Same thing,” she said with a wink. She had the most volatile light-blue eyes that were so electrifying I couldn’t look away.

Time out—just for reference, I didn’t believe in juvenile notions, like love at first sight. In my book, time didn’t cease to move forward when two people fell in love. As a matter-of-fact, I’d have to be drunk (not on love) for such an irrational thought to enter my mind.

But, there was something magical about her. A mischievous charm. I wouldn’t have said that I necessarily liked it, but it was intriguing. She was intriguing… and new. For a town whose newspaper’s biggest story was the harvest report, having a new girl in school would most likely be headlined on The Gossiper’s front page.

Kirsten

“First of all, Mother, it is called a sperm bank, not a sperm bar.” I cannot believe I am having this conversation right now. “And where did you get this information from?”

Max looked over at me, smirking.

“Why does it matter where I heard it from? What will people think?” cried my mother.

“Fuck! Mom, no one is gonna care where or how I get a baby.” I want to crawl into a hole and die. “Mom, you wouldn’t by any chance be talking to Marie, would you? Is that where all this came from? Did she tell you I’m planning to go to a sperm bank? Or did she tell you I should think about going to a sperm bank?”

“That’s not the point, Kirsten. The point is that it’s time for you to settle down and think about having a family. You need to be more like Marie,” my mom lectured.

“Like Marie? My sister, Marie? The one who wears yoga pants and ponytails everywhere and has a kid attached to her hip? No, thanks. Don’t get me wrong, Mom. I love Marie, but I’d rather not schedule in sex night.”

SOULLESS Final

Book links:

Amazon  ~  Goodreads

Synopsis:

Mia and Roxanne have always been the best of friends, supported each other through everything, and always been happy for one another… but that’s when things were simple.
Fast forward to their teenage years, and life is now full of complications… but only for Mia.
Everything seems to happen to Mia, whereas Roxanne seems to have quite the sweet life– literally. She has the family, her bakery, and the love of her life– everything that Mia wants. But one day something terrible happens, and Ryan- her boyfriend- is nowhere to be seen, and people go missing and bodies are found. Creatures appear in your bathroom, down your streets and inside your bakery, and along with them they bring blood, action and hunger– a hunger for souls.

Written from different points of views, SOULLESS will raise questions about each character and humanity as a whole, whilst being packed with action, guns, cakes, blood, kisses, and romance.

Because the question is: Who is the villain after all? Maybe it just isn’t who you think it is..

SOULLESS Guest Blog Post: The Characters

During this blog I’ll be discussing the two main characters of the novel, or, more specifically, where they came from and why they’re probably my two most favorite characters out of all of my books. However, first things first, thank you very much to Jillian for hosting me! 🙂 This marks the last stop of the SOULLESS blog tour, and so I think it’s a great place to end.So, SOULLESS is written mostly from two points of view, with the slight exception of a few chapters written from a guy named Ryan and an old man named Mr Pearson. The two points are view are from Mia and Roxanne— both girls are seventeen, and they both grew up together in the same town— Amador City in California.

As they grew up, both girls were extremely close to one another, and they were almost inseparable. However, as they grew up, things began to get more complicated, and it’s within the first two chapters of SOULLESS that their relationship finally meets breaking point.

You see, Mia is jealous of Roxanne. Roxanne doesn’t go to high school— she dropped out and set up her own bakery, and it’s been a success. Roxanne isn’t single— she has a partner named Ryan, who Mia is quite fond of. Finally, Roxanne has the family— the family that Mia never had.

It isn’t until the two reach this age that they begin to see their differences. However, at the same time, Roxanne finds herself jealous at the fact that Mia has a sister— something mysterious happened to her when they were younger, although Mia is unsure of what.

The differences that the two girls face is a large element of the novel. As the story unfolds, we jump between their points of view, and one of the questions that readers are left to decide for themselves is who they feel more sympathy for— both girls have their qualities and their negatives.

As people begin to vanish from Amador, it’s up to Mia and Roxanne to fight to save their town and their people. SOULLESS raises many questions about many issues, but the idea of the two main characters not getting along and trying to re-build their relationship throughout this interested me, both because it made the story more interesting due to the different scenes I could write from different points of view and slowly reveal things, but also because it’s different. Many stories involve either a main character and an acquaintance, or two or three friends solving the problem, fighting against evil. It added a different dynamic to the book, although this idea didn’t fall into place until I began seriously plotting the book.

Because of this, it made the book even more exciting to write. As you may or may not know, depending on whether or not you’ve been following the SOULLESS Blog Tour, but I actually started this book numerous times before finally getting it right. Not only because the plot was one that seemed too big for me to tackle, and because I was scared of ruining the idea, but because I didn’t quite know how to tell the story, as in, from whose point of view.

After reading several books where multiple points of view were successful, I knew that this was how I wanted to tell SOULLESS. Through this, I got to know my characters really well, and it made it even more exciting to continue writing the book, wanting to find out what each character was going to do or behave next. Mia and Roxanne took on a life of their own, and they became some of my most vivid characters that I’ve created so far.

When I reached the end of working on this book, after I had finished the last page and penned the last line, I knew I would be sad to see them go. Despite the faults they both have, they both are strong, caring, protective, and fierce— neither of them are afraid to do what needs doing to put things right!

In conclusion, when asked about the characters of the novel, I feel as though— for the reasons above— the characters help to drive this book on alongside the plot. Their back-stories are something that I really enjoyed creating, and the personalities of Mia and Roxanne. I’m just glad that I was able to ‘meet’ them in order to tell this story.

If you decide to take a chance on SOULLESS, I hope that you enjoy meeting Mia and Roxanne just as much as I did.

Synopsis:

Professional, successful, survivor Stella has mastered the art of appearances and conquering what life throws at her. Time after time, she chooses to fight even though she’s consistently poised to break. It’s that fight to get her life back, to make things right, to survive that defines who she is. She’s been loved, left, lost, blown up, shot, and exploited. Physically, she’s almost completely put back together. Mentally, Stella’s one step from a vindictive retaliation that may or may not be her best choice.

In Seamless, Stella has no choice but to step into the ring with someone who she once loved. It’s a dirty fight that will take all she has. Will she do what it takes to win? Will she make it out alive?

You’ll cheer her on until you realize all is not what it seems. Appearances can be deceiving.

My review:

Seamless is the final installment in author R.L. Griffin’s By A Thread Trilogy and let me say….whoa!  What a pulse pounding, emotional finish.  I loved it!

Stella has had just about enough of what life is dishing out.  She’s buried a fiancé (or so she thought), grieved for her lost love, been shot, caught in an explosion and kidnapped. Yep, she’s just about done with all of it.  Now, with the media hounding her and sick to death of all of the creative hashtag nonsense on twitter every time she leaves the house, she’s ready to just run away.  But then she thinks of her best friends and her boyfriend and realizes that despite all the bad, she really does have a fantastic amount of good in her life.  Now, with the unexpected, and in essence reincarnation, of the man who shot her, Stella’s biggest fight is on the horizon.  She will need to get him to confess to the shooting and the treachery he is responsible for, all without killing him herself.  Yeah, easier said than done when she is oozing the need for revenge.  Between the ups and downs of her own mental state, wanting desperately to be worthy of her amazing boyfriend and friends, trying to catch a ghost and just wanting to live a normal life, you could say Stella’s plate is full.  Will she make it thought the darkness and into the light?  Only time and her will to survive will tell…

Holy hell!  This book had me on the edge of my seat and cursing out loud too many times to count!  What a wild and crazy ride.  Stella, as in the other books in the series, is a force to be reckoned with.  She’s smart, emotional, realistic, and intense and has phenomenal taste in heels.  She’s tattooed, curses and drinks like a sailor and damn I adore her.  She is a gal I would love to share a bottle of wine with. She is absolutely pushed to her limits by the end of this book and my heart broke for her as she finally herself broke.  But like all amazing heroines, in the end she gets herself together and it was a Phoenix rising from the ashes moment.  Her support system is amazing.  Her friends are behind her and are there for her every step of the way but her boyfriend, George, is the one that had me swooning.  That man is just freaking perfect.  Gorgeous, sexy, intelligent and with a heart the size of Texas, he just kept winning me over from start to finish.  The two of them together are freaking fantastic.  The mystery and intensity of Stella’s situation was full throttle until the very last chapter.  It was such a kick ass ride!  The best part though?  The epilogue.  I could NOT be happier with that ending.  It was pure perfection and I was crying big happy tears for Stella.  Her tattooed, foul-mouthed self got her happy ending.  No spoilers from me…just know you’ll love it.  Promise!

Thank you, R.L., for an intense, emotional, kick ass ending to this series!

Goodreads  ~  Amazon  ~  Barnes & Noble

Synopsis:

She was born the day the world ended…

Nurrin has lived her entire life with zombies—trapped behind walls meant to keep them safe. She’s mostly happy there. But when a zombie horde breech the walls of her Haven, she has to trust her brother, Collin, and his best friend to keep her alive.

He just wants his past to die…

Finn O’Malley has given up on voicing warnings that are ignored. No one cares that the zombies are changing. Now all that matters is keeping Collin and Nurrin safe from what’s outside the walls of a Haven. But when Nurrin’s best friend picks up a contact infection, he agrees to get the medicine needed to save his life. Forced together, relying on each other in a strange Haven, zombies aren’t the most dangerous thing they’re facing.

Excerpt:

The black man takes a half step forward, but Lori stops him with a single hand. Neither says anything to me as I escort Nurrin out of the tiny room. Another fight has started, and I drag her into the crowd, tugging her until her back is pressed against my front. She’s stiff and furious,

her breasts heaving under the material of her dress. “We can’t leave—Lori is watching, and it’s safest if we enjoy the Underground before we make a departure.” “So we’ll watch men pummel each other until Lori loses interest?” she hisses. It’s the first thing she’s said since we entered the Underground, and I’m pleased to hear how steady her voice is. “Unless something else in the Underground captured your interest,” I say. She inhales sharply, licking her lips. My dick hardens, and there’s nothing I can do to keep it from her, not with her pressed against me. I’m not willing to let her go. “What the hell, Finn?” she whispers, furious. “Chemical reaction, Ren. Nothing to worry about.” My words are dismissive, my tone condescending, but she twists, staring at me with curious, probing eyes. I see a question in them, but I don’t have an answer, and if she keeps staring at me, her lips inches from mine, I’ll kiss her and the consequences be damned. “Eyes on the fight, little girl,” I murmur.

 Giveaway:

Nazarea is giving away a really awesome prize! The grand prize winner will receive a zombie survival kit and 25 edited pages of the manuscript and swag — with notes from Nazarea. A runner up will receive the zombie survival kit and swag. This contest is US only.

Synopsis:

Desperate to keep him…

I’ve finally gotten everything I ever wanted: love, freedom, happiness, and, most importantly, Finn. Our love is everything I expected it to be and more. We’ve finally found each other, but the world seems determined to tear us apart. We thought my father was the only obstacle between us, but now it’s the military. With Finn’s departure looming, we’re squeezing in every moment together before we run out of time.

Trying to make every moment count…

Being Carrie’s bodyguard was one thing. Being her boyfriend is another. Every day she’s mine is a day the sun shines in my life. Yet our time together is running out. Her father will never think a tattooed Marine will be good enough, so I’ll do whatever it takes to be worthy of her love. But the road will take me away from the girl who makes me feel alive–the girl I can’t live without.

Time only gets us so far…

My review:

Out of Time is the second book in Jen McLaughlin’s Out of Line Series.  After falling completely in love with Carrie and Finn in the first book, Out of Line, I was beyond eager to get my hands on this book.  Well, it was everything I could have dreamed of…and more.  I loved, loved, loved this book.

Carrie and Finn have overcome the obstacle of Finn being Carrie’s bodyguard and are enjoying their newfound love.  Well, they’ve sort of overcome that whole bodyguard thing.  Carrie’s father, a senator, still has no idea their relationship went from professional to personal.  They plan on telling him, eventually, but now the more pressing problem is Finn’s role in the Marines.  He’s gotten an ominous call and fears he will be deployed much sooner than he thought.  Fearing he will upset her if he hides what little info he has about leaving, he has no choice but to tell her what may be in store.  Finn sees an upside to this mess when he’s given the chance of a lifetime in the form of a special mission.  One that will hopefully improve the senator’s view of him and ultimately the senator’s view of him as someone worthy of dating Carrie.  Now, the only thing left is to just enjoy the possibly limited time they have left together.  Of course, that’s when her father decides to come for a surprise visit.  Now the question becomes will it be the Senator’s visit or Finn’s choice of a mission that will threaten their relationship more….

As some of you may know, I completely adore this series.  So much so that I deemed it “tattoo worthy”….and got a Finn tattoo.  Well, I was a nervous wreck waiting to read this book.  I had an idea from the message Finn got in the last book that he would be leaving Carrie.  Well, between the waiting game and Carrie’s dad visiting, I didn’t think my emotions could get any more chaotic!  I was a ball of nerves from one page to the next but then I would get to a Finn and Carrie moment and I would just swoon and give a happy sigh.  The heat and passion between them is scrumptious.  I adore these two.  I don’t know of many book couples that I enjoy this much.  Finn is just, well, the perfect package.  Loyal, caring, sweet, sexy and so in love with Carrie he is the perfect guy.  If he didn’t already win my heart in the first book he would have won it in this one.  His love for Carrie is so intense and so real.  I just adore that man!  Carrie is once again a girl with quite a head on her shoulders and really shows it at the very end of this book.  She knows what she wants and will do what it takes to make it happen for her and Finn.  The navigation from Carrie’s POV to Finn’s POV is so well done and makes his book that much better, which I didn’t think possible.

The ups and downs Carrie and Finn have to deal with in the beginning of the story are nothing compared to what they go through right before this story ends.  Get tissues handy.  Not a few tissues, a box of tissues.  I was a complete and utter mess by the time I finished reading (I’m actually tearing up as I type this review).  Not all sad tears though….there were tears of joy and relief after all the sad tears.  I won’t give anything away, but I will say I would never recommend a book that ended badly….so you’ll just have to trust me on this.

Jen writes emotion so damn well.  It’s raw and beautiful and makes the reader feel everything Carrie and Finn are feeling.  It’s a rare gift and I appreciate every moment of it.

After all my blubbering, if you take one thing away from this review, it’s that you MUST get this book and if you haven’t read the first in the series, read it….and then read Out of Time.  I am waiting on pins and needles for the next book and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for Finn and Carrie.  Thank you, Jen, for another amazing read and for a book dedication that still has me smiling from ear to ear! Heart you, girl!

Top 10 Things I Do to Get Inspired

Sometimes I have a scene to write or an outline to finish or edits that need completed and my brain just won’t cooperate. So I have a few go-to’s that help me refresh!

1. Browse Pinterest (You can find my boards here)

2. Peruse Tumblr. I don’t have an account but I love looking at everyone else’s!

3. Listen to or a make a playlist on Spotify

4. Take a walk.

5. Take a shower. Besides getting so caught up in my writing that I often can’t remember the last time I washed my hair, for some reason, this is when I get some of my best ideas!

6. Change the scenery. Sometimes just taking my computer on my back deck or to Starbucks makes a huge difference.

7. Make a dream cast for the book I’m working on.

8. Step away and do something entirely unrelated like bake something I’ve never made before, play a game with my kiddo, or read a book completely outside my genre of interest.

9. Chat with friends on Twitter or Facebook. Have to beware the time suck though or it will be midnight and I’ll still have a scene to write, an outline to finish, and edits to correct! 😉

10. Grab a snack like a protein bar, or something super carb-loaded and caffeine filled. Not the healthiest version, but when it’s too late at night for some of the others, its works!

My Today
My Way Series, Book Two
By: HJ Bellus
Synopsis:
Lacey’s Story…
Covering up pain is easy. It’s keeping
it tucked away that’s hard. I’ve always needed the cover of tattoos to hide the
nasty past that leached its way into me, tainting me beneath my skin. Not the
shiny, trendy tats, but the ugly broken kind, meant to keep the world at bay.
If they weren’t enough, then my piercings, foul mouth and crazy hair usually
did the trick. Life had taught me to never follow the rules, because when you
do, you get burned.
My Today COVERThat philosophy served its purpose,
until I met someone who turned my life upside down. Milly, the little hoochie,
stormed into my life and changed everything with her undying faith in me, her
love and her shitty coffee concoctions. I found a family in Milly, and her sexy
farm boy, Cree. She accepted me without hesitation, and never ran from the dark
and dangerous secrets that I harbored. My new family loved me unconditionally,
with their showers of sprinkles and impromptu dance parties.
My life was perfectly imperfect until
Tripp and his crazy-ass ideas of princesses. Our relationship is what most
would describe as fuel meeting fire. We were both hell bent on burning each
other to the ground. Tripp, fresh out of rehab, moved in with Milly and Cree to
try and make a new life for himself. Tripp, the sexy as hell, charismatic
beast, soon became one of my best friends. We shared our love of ice cream and
tattoos as we blazed our own path that could only lead to a beautiful train
wreck. The only question left is, will we set the countryside ablaze with our
hot tempers and foul mouths, or will we paint our own happy ending filled with
all the gushy shit normal people crave?
