Synopsis:

The first year of college is supposed to be about parties, parties, and getting the hell out of Texas. Instead, Milcah Daniels is spending her eighteenth year in and out of Houston’s hospitals. Her hair is falling out, they’ve cut off her boobs, and if she makes it to nineteen, she’ll consider it a personal miracle.

Breast cancer really has a way of messing with a girl’s social calendar.

When Milcah’s temporarily discharged from the hospital, she’s determined to get a tattoo for every medical procedure she’s had. Her quest leads her to Skin Stories, a new tattoo parlor a block from her apartment. And to it’s infuriatingly sexy artist, Callum Scott.

Callum is everything Milcah wants, and everything she shouldn’t have now. A new relationship when the official prognosis is one to five years is a terrible idea. But Callum doesn’t know about the breast cancer, and Milcah’s not running to tell him.

But when the doctor says things are actually looking positive, her entire life turns upside down. How is she supposed to start living again when she’s finally learned to accept her death?

Excerpt:

He glances back down at the paper. “Do you know what this means?”

“Dude, I’m going to have it permanently inked to my skin,” I say. “Of course I know what it means.”

“You’d be surprised how many people don’t know what they’re getting tattooed on,” he replies. “They’ll get random words in the foreign language of their choice tattooed because they think it looks pretty, and they have no idea what it actually says.” He snickers. “Or the assholes who insist spelling a word in their tattoo wrong, even when you point out to them that the spelling they want to use is not right, and that you’re and your are two different things.”

He’s a closet grammar freak, and my ridiculous and embarrassing crush intensifies. I clear my throat a tiny bit and refocus on the conversation. “Well, you don’t have to worry. I know what it means.”

“Does Mar have your email address?” he asks.

“Who?”

“The girl in the front.”

“No…”

“Well, I can email you the different fonts so you can pick one before setting up the actual appointment,” he says, looking completely casual about asking me for my email address.

God, Milcah. It’s for business. There’s nothing personal about it. Which is awkward, since my email address is still the same as it was when I made it in the sixth grade. I scribble it onto a paper and shove it towards him. “Thanks,” I say, trying to keep my voice sounding normal.

Why am I acting so freakin’ bizarre?

He folds the paper and tucks it into the pocket of his faded jeans. “Great. Hopefully I’ll have them for you tomorrow or the next day.”

I don’t have to go see Dr. B again for another two weeks. I still have time.

“Thanks,” I say, twisting my hands together and feeling awkward.

“I guess I’ll be seeing you around,” Callum says, flashing me a smile.

“Yeah.” I turn around and leave his office before I say anything stupid.

Mar, the girl in the front, smiles at me as I walk toward the door. “Do you need to schedule a follow-up now?” she asks, leaning against the desk.

I am inexplicably jealous of the fact that she gets to spend so much time in the same building as Callum, and I wonder what the hell has happened to my brain. Apparently, when they removed my boobs, they removed my common sense, too.

“Not yet,” I say, determined to be extra nice to her because the insane part of me wants to hate her. “But I’ll give you a call when everything’s figured out.”

“Great,” she says. “Have a great day.”

“You too,” I say, and walk out of the tattoo parlor, only slightly perplexed how nothing in the tattoo parlor was what I thought it would be.

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000026_00025]

Synopsis:

It’s good to be on top… Asher Knox has it all. Girls, wealth, a career most would kill for. He’s just landed the biggest job of his career. And he’s miserable.

She’s fighting her way from the bottom… Megan Beauchamp has no illusions about why she was chosen to be Asher’s PA. She’s pretty, and down to earth, and everything the Hollywood star always falls for. Too bad Megan is just paying her dues and has no interest in anything but advancing at her PR firm.

He’ll throw it all away…Luca James knows what he wants. And he’s waited a long time for the window to open—when it does, he’ll walk away from the career he’s built for a chance at something real.

When Megan’s boss threatens to fire her, Luca and Asher convince her to leave town with them. Between bad hotels and pit stop confessionals, the three are drawn closer together. And the lines blur even more in Branton, where Megan is forced to look at everything she left behind. But when the boys want more, Megan will be forced to choose between the men she loves and the life she thought she wanted. And in a town like Branton, the secrets she keeps won’t be hidden for long.

Warning: for mature audiences. Two sexy men + one sassy heroine = hot sex.

My review:

Sweet Ruin is the third book in author Nazarea Andrews’ University of Branton Series.  I have loved this series since the first book and let me say, Nazarea has really turned up the heat with this latest installment!

Megan Beauchamp isn’t a fool.  She knows she has to work extremely hard if she ever wants to make it big in the PR firm she works for and handling celeb heart-throb Asher Knox is definitely the hardest job yet.  But if anyone is an expert at handling Asher, it’s her.  She isn’t like all the other women in his life in that she doesn’t let his status affect her.  Sure, he’s gorgeous and sexy with a killer accent, but she knows him inside out and backwards and knows he’s really just an ordinary guy.  An ordinary guy with a huge crush on her.  Luckily for her, she isn’t interested in all the headaches that comes with relationships.  What she needs to do is focus on her career.  Sometimes that’s easier said than done.

Heart-throb Asher Knox has it all….except Megan.  He’s rich and famous and über successful in Hollywood but he can’t help but be falling hard for her.  She’s ignored his advances thus far but things have a funny way of working out sometimes and when Knox sees a chance at getting Megan away from all the glitz and glam, he knows he needs to take this chance for what it’s worth….the chance to make her fall for him.

Luca James has been in sort of limbo for too long.  He’s best friends with Megan and would love to take it to the next level…but he wants more.  He craves a different type of relationship, one he’s sure Megan wouldn’t be into.  She’s already mentioned in the past that she doesn’t like to share….which is exactly what he does like.  Will he ever get a chance to show Megan that sharing could be better than she’s ever imagined?

Fate, however, seems to have a plan for these three and sets them on a trip that will change them all…forever.

Excuse me for a minute while I cool down a bit.  Whew, this book was by far the hottest and sexiest of the University of Branton Series.  I, of course, enjoy a break from the vanilla every once in a while and this was just delicious.  The chemistry between Megan, Asher and Luca was there right from the start and I can’t say who I would have chosen if I had to pick between Luca and Asher.  Megan definitely had a tough choice but luckily she didn’t have to choose between them.  *wink, wink* Again, this is definitely the sexiest of the Branton series and it was a nice departure and addition!

And of course it was a treat to see my fave Branton professor and other cast of characters I’ve grown to love!

Thank you, Nazarea, for letting us visit Branton again!  It will always be one of my favorite towns and I will look forward to reading more of your work in the future!

For gals who love bad boys and musicians, Jennifer Chance brings ROCK IT,

the first novel in Rule Breakers, a sizzling New Adult series published by Random House’s LoveSwept imprint.

Want to learn more about ROCK IT? Be sure to check out this exclusive interview with Jennifer Chance!

Synopsis:

Jennifer Chance unleashes her hot new series with the tale of a smoldering rocker and the fangirl who catches his eye—and finds herself living out her wildest dreams.

Lacey Dawes is a total pro at the talent agency where she works, and it doesn’t hurt that IMO Worldwide Media represents Dante Falcone. The rock god has starred in her fantasies since she was sixteen—and remains her secret crush to this day. So when Dante picks her to be the interim manager on his Dream It tour, Lacey can’t believe her luck. Handling Dante is sure to be the most exquisite, spine-tingling, nerve-wracking mix of business and pleasure ever.

Although Dante is grateful for the adoring fans who scream for one more of his full-throttle, soul-searing songs, being surrounded by a cadre of corporate types backstage is wearing thin. Then Lacey shows up. Yeah, she’s organized, smart, quick to get him what he wants before he knows he wants it—but Dante senses there’s something else going on with sweet, sexy Lacey. One kiss tells him what that “something” might be . . . and makes him hungry for more.

My Review:

Rock It is the first book in author Jennifer Chance’s Rule Breakers Series and kicks it off with an enjoyable start.

Lacey Dawes’ career as a PA in a major talent agency has really been amazing thus far.  She’s doing everything she could have dreamed of and when the chance to work with major star Dante Falcone is dropped in her lap she can hardly believe it.  I mean he’s been her crush for as long as she can remember.  She knows everything about him from way back when he was a little known teen idol to now…one of the most sought after stars in music.  Sure, she’s beyond thrilled to be working with him but if she’s being honest, she’s pretty terrified too.  But she knows she will be able to keep things on the most professional of levels and will be able to bury her screaming-fan-girl-ish crush, right?  Turns out that is way easier said than done when she starts working with Dante.  How is it possible he could be even more amazing in person?  Oh, she was in so much trouble.

Dante Falcone is thankful every day for his fame and success.  He has everything he’s dreamed of and is always working at getting to the next level in his career.  But there’s always been something missing.  He can’t quite figure out was it is, exactly, until he meets Lacey.  There is something about her that draws him in.  It’s almost like he’s met her before.  But surely that can’t be true.  He would remember someone as beautiful and refreshing as she is.  Still, he can’t get her out of his mind.  What better way to keep her around than to insist that she’s the one he wants to head up his latest tour and projects with his new talent agency?  Nothing has ever been out of reach when he sets his sights on it, and Lacey is no exception.

I’m always a sucker for a Rock God meets fresh-faced girl story and Rock It totally delivered.  Dante is the ultimate rocker with a soft side and big heart and the desire to find love and Lacey totally fits that bill.  One of the things I liked best about Lacey was her very real reactions when she’s around Dante.  Her plan of being professional and composed completely fly out the window and more often than not she ends up fumbling over her words and actions because, let’s face it, wouldn’t you if you had to work with your ultimate celeb crush?  I know I would!  It’s those reactions that made her a very endearing character and one I really enjoyed reading.  And the chemistry between Dante and Lacey is totally scrumptious!

I am looking forward to more in this series and to see where Jennifer takes us!

About Jennifer Chance

JenniferChanceI come by romance honestly, having spent several years writing adult romance and entering romance contests through Romance Writers of America–including finaling twice in the prestigious Golden Heart contest and winning once. But despite these and other contest wins, my first published novel came not in adult romance, but as a writer of YA historical fiction (you can read all about my Elizabethan spy girls stories, the Maids of Honor, here.)

Still, despite my love of Elizabethan spies, I could never quite give up those super Alpha contemporary romance heroes. So, in the summer of 2013, I decided to see if perhaps I might still have a romance or two up my sleeve.

I wrote a tale about a girl whose biggest high-school and college crush–a rock star–suddenly becomes her biggest client, only now she has to be professional and not betray the fact that she’s completely in love with the guy. It was a fun, sexy, romantic fantasy, and I suggested the idea to my agent… who asked what other ideas I had in addition to this story. Shortly after, the Rule Breakers series was born.

To separate these books from my historical work, I adopted the name Jennifer Chance. I am now pursuing my dreams (pretty much round the clock as it turns out) and am THRILLED to be able to have four e-books coming out in 2014 and early 2015, all with Random House LoveSwept’s New Adult romance line.

As to what will happen from here, who knows? But as long as there is a story to be written and an HEA to be had, I’ll be the one over in the corner, tapping away on my keyboard.

Synopsis:

I’m just a girl…

I’m a famous country star who’s spent her life cultivating a good girl persona to avoid bad press, but I’ve reached my limit. I’m going away for spring break with my two best friends from college, and we’ve vowed to spend the vacation seeking out fun in the sun—along with some hot, no-strings-attached sex. The only thing I needed was the perfect guy, and then I met Austin Murphy. He might be totally wrong for me, but the tattooed bad boy is hard to resist. When I’m in his arms, everything just feels right.

And I’m just a guy…

I’m just a bartender who lives in Key West, stuck in an endless cycle of boredom. But then Mackenzie Forbes, America’s Sweetheart herself, comes up to me and looks at me with those bright green eyes…and everything changes. She acts like she’s just a normal girl and I’m just a normal guy, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. My past isn’t pretty, you know. I did what I had to do to survive, and she’d run if she learned the truth about my darkness. But with her, I’m finally realizing what it’s like to be alive. To laugh, live, and be happy.

All good things must come to an end…

My review:

Between Us by Jen McLaughlin is the second novella in the Sex on the Beach Series.  Being a huge fan of Jen’s I was SO excited to get my hands on this novella.  Well, Jen has done it again! I adored this book!

Country music superstar sweetheart Mackenzie Forbes just wants to have a normal girls weekend with her two best gal pals.  Lay around, drinking cocktails and meeting guys.  Shuck the good girl image she is known for and just be free. Of course, being in the spotlight, she knows this is pretty hard to do without going unnoticed.  But so far so good!  Mackenzie seems to be flying under the radar and luckily it doesn’t seem that the sexy bartender she has taken notice of realizes who she is.  After talking with him and making plans to meet up, she is fairly certain her anonymity has remained, which is a huge relief.  Because there’s something about this guy that she really likes.  He’s different from anyone else she’s ever met and Mackenzie would love to get to know him better….without her fame getting in the way.

Key West bartender Austin Murphy can’t believe his eyes.  Is Mackenzie Forbes really sitting as his bar? She clearly doesn’t think he recognizes her and clearly she doesn’t want to be recognized.  Far be it from Austin to deny her that.  He knows what it’s like to want to be someone else.  After all, it’s why he moved here in the first place.  But he can’t deny the attraction between them and he sure can’t say no when she says she wants to spend some of her vacation weith him.  What would she say if she knew the dark things about his past?  Would she change her mind about him?  God, he hoped not.  She’s the best thing that has walked into his life and he would hate to give her up.

The dance Mackenzie and Austin are swaying to is slow and sensual with plenty of heat but there’s also the issue of trust lying just below the surface.  Will Mackenzie trust Austin with her true identity?  Will Austin trust Mackenzie with his past?  Will a weekend be enough for either of them to quench the thirst they have for one another?

Oh man, I loved this story.  Jen does such an amazing job with her book guys.  Austin is the quintessential bad-boy on the outside/good-guy on the inside and I absolutely adored him.  Mackenzie has been stifled by her life in the spotlight and craves the normalcy of a young woman.  Both wanting to escape their lives for even a day, both Austin and Mackenzie find solace in each other’s company…as well as plenty of heat.  The sexual tension between them is smoldering and absolutely delicious! Then, learning more about Austin’s past, I loved him even more.  Of course there was a big mess they have to deal with and it’s the test of their very new relationship….I won’t give anything away but I will say that I was so happy with how it ended.  *dreamy sigh*  Simply perfect!

Thank you, Jen, for yet another amazing, romantic, sexy, yummy read!

Synopsis:

CAN FUN IN THE SUN TURN INTO LASTING LOVE?

Spring break in Key West with my besties was supposed to be casual fun. But I never expected to meet James Hunt. Sex and frolic? Yes! A relationship? No. But his hot blue eyes and confident manner drew me in. And when he let me see the man behind the mask, I fell hard, foolishly believing there could be a future for us. Of course I never considered our relationship might be based on lies…or that his betrayal could rock my foundation and make me question everything I believed in…

OR WILL A LIFE BUILT ON LIES RUIN EVERYTHING?

The moment I saw Quinn I knew I had to have her. She hooked me with her cool eyes and don’t touch me attitude. I had it all, money, social status, and looks. I could get any girl I wanted…until her. When my friends challenged me with a bet to get her into bed by the end of the week, I couldn’t pass it up. But sex wasn’t supposed to turn into love. She wasn’t supposed to change me, push me, and make me want more for myself. She wasn’t supposed to wreck me in all ways. And now, if I can’t turn my lies into truth, I just might lose her forever…

My review:

Beyond Me is a novella in the Sex on the Beach Series and being a big Jennifer Probst fan, I was so excited to get my hands on this story.  Jennifer didn’t let me down.  This story was just perfect!

On Spring Break in Key West with her two BFF’s, Quinn must venture out and meet a guy.  Why, you ask?  It was the deal her and her girlfriends had made.  They wouldn’t be spending a ton of girl time together.  They needed to branch out and get some action.  Some guy action.  It’s this deal that leads her to a house party at a gorgeous and sprawling mansion.  After being there only a short time, Quinn isn’t too impressed with what’s going on.  Scantily clad drunken girls and Ken doll perfect frat guys.  SO not her thing.  All that changes when she meets James Hunt.  He seems to be different than all these guys here and she immediately takes to him.  It doesn’t take long for Quinn to decide James should be the guy she throws caution to the wind with and enjoy a fling with….too bad she finds herself wanting more with him by the end of their trip. Forget the problem of the trip ending.  The bigger problem, Quinn soon finds out, is James wasn’t exactly honest with her from the very beginning.   Could his dishonesty ruin any chance for a long-term relationship?

James Hunt was used to throwing the parties at his parents house on Spring Break.  He was used to the girls and the booze and all the annoying nonsense that came with it.  And he was over all of it.  But he couldn’t be annoyed tonight.  Now when he sees Quinn.  She’s unlike any other girl at this party and he instantly knows he must have her and after spending even a little bit of time with her, he was sure of it.  Of course his friends take that as a chance to offer up a challenge to get her in bed before the weekend was up.  Just to shut them up, James accepts.  Quinn would never find out anyway, right?  The more time James spends with Quinn he sure hopes she doesn’t because he’s fallen hard and fast for her.  But even if she did find out about some stupid bet, she would surely know his feelings for her were true and very real….right?  Or could that one stupid bet risk it all?

Two people from opposite ends of the social status spectrum turn out to be a perfect match when it comes to matters of the heart.  Will they be able to overlook all of the silly mistakes that lead up to the present and give what they’ve found a chance?

I simply adored this book.  In true Jennifer fashion, she gives the reader two fantastic characters with an undeniable attraction that built beautifully throughout the story.  Of course, the whole matter of the bet had me a nervous wreck and I was so worried for Quinn and James because I really REALLY wanted things to work between them.  James, despite coming from loads of money, was a broken soul and I wanted to give him a great big hug when he let his true feelings about his childhood show and how he feels about his parents spill out.  Quinn was so amazing and strong.  She has been dealt a tough hand in life but is determined to make the best of things.  Their differences balanced out and I loved them as a couple.  I won’t give anything away as far as the bet and the ending but I will say this:  the thing I love most about Jennifer’s writing is her ability to write an amazing ending.  Chick-flick-movie-worthy type of endings, I tell you.  And this was no exception.

Thank you, Jennifer, for a sexy and loving story!

Excerpt:

Prologue

June 1812, Paris

Emily Masterson lay quietly on the small bed. A screen separated her from
her partner who, by the sound of everything, had already awakened and was
moving about their small flat. The rich aroma of his tea steeping permeated
the little privacy she had in their dwelling. She noted every one of his
steps, though he moved quietly.

Chapter One

Two years later
August, 1814, London

Emma couldn’t breathe.
If she stayed in this closet for much longer, she was certain to expire, or
at the very least, faint. What little air there was clogged her nostrils and
coated her tongue. She was going to suggest the housekeeper air out the
closet and beat the dust from every item, assuming she survived this
encounter. Her charges were long in bed, and Lady Comfry had taken laudanum
for a headache and probably wouldn’t awaken until tomorrow afternoon.

Chapter Two
Emma Masterson.
Remy Hawthorne did his best to school his features as he returned to his
seat. It had been two years since he’d left her in Paris, since her
assignment to seduce Comte Gibrault. Remy had made certain she’d be safe
working with another member of the Seven, one he trusted, and then he left.
He knew she’d accomplished her task because they’d acquired the necessary
intelligence from Gibrault.

Chapter Three

The following morning, Emma felt remarkably well rested. She’d fully
expected a restless night, but after a long soak in the hot bath and some
bread and tea to settle her stomach, she’d fallen asleep. The last image in
her mind hadn’t been of Lord Comfry’s dying breath, but instead was Remy’s
expression as he stood at the foot of the stairs. He’d been so earnest with
his concern.

Chapter Four

Remy was thankful for the darkened carriage. He didn’t want Emma to see how
much the kiss had affected him as well. He’d kissed her for one reason only:
to startle her out of her prim and proper facade, to cut to the woman
beneath all the propriety. He hadn’t anticipated enjoying the feel of her
against him so much. He’d thought his desire for her long since dead, yet
his blood still hummed with lust.

Synopsis:

Have you ever thought of taking a vacation alone? I mean step on a plane, check into your hotel, and lie on the beach completely and utterly alone. No? Me either, but then right before senior spring break I got dumped.

Something about break ups makes you do things you didn’t want to do, and try things you didn’t know you were capable of.

That’s how I ended up at the Palm Palace.

That’s how I met Grey.

That’s how my spring break turned into the most unforgettable week of my life.

KE_SaleNow

Excerpt:

“Grey—I …” My body was responding to every flick of his tongue and every time his lips moved against mine. He was the most incredible kisser. If he kept doing that thing with his tongue, he could convince me to do anything. I pulled myself into his lap, needing to be closer to him.

The roughness of his palm surprised me as it trailed over my leg, hiking the hem of my dress as he shoved the fabric out of his way. I moaned quietly as his thumb pressed deeply along my inner thigh. It was tender and possessive at the same time. The pressure in such a sensitive spot made my skin burn for more touching. I rocked my hips forward.

But just like that, he stopped. His hands went to his sides and his lips were gone. “I think we should head back.” His voice was breathy.

I froze, straddled across his hips and completely out of breath. “But— I thought—” Dammit. This boy was so hot and cold all the time. Although, I was completely turned on by the hot side of him. I crawled off his lap, not sure what had happened.

I stood to flatten my dress and took a few deep breaths.

“If you’re serious about helping, then we have an early morning.” He retrieved his T-shirt and pulled it over those abs I wasn’t done touching.

Annoyed he had abruptly stopped our second make out session, I wrapped myself back in his plaid shirt, picked up the beer, and trudged back to the boardwalk. Even if I wanted to have a spring break fling, I wasn’t so sure Grey was the guy to do it with.

He led me back to my room and deposited me on the doorstep. “Goodnight, Eden. I’ll see you in the morning.”

“Goodnight.” I tried to take the poutiness out of my voice, hoping he would lean in for another kiss. He had to be as turned on as I was by what just happened. He, however, seemed to have more self-control than I was able to pull together.

I leaned against the room door and watched as he walked across the parking lot before disappearing into the room opposite of mine. My heart was still pounding from the kiss on the beach. How was I supposed to sleep after that?

My review:

Every Shattered Thing is a novel from author Elora Nicole Ramirez and deals with some pretty dark and upsetting situations but it’s those situations that left me loving the characters and really pulling for them from the very first chapter.

To say that Stephanie has had an awful life would be a terribly gross understatement.  Her father has abused her both physically and sexually for too many years to count and her mother isn’t much better.  As if that’s not horrid enough, her poor excuse for a father has some friends that like to use Stephanie as well.  What’s even worse is the community’s lack of action and empathy.  The teachers see her bruises, but do nothing.  Stephanie is actually relieved they stopped calling the police.  Why?  Because the police already know about it.   A few of the police are her father’s friends.  And they use Stephanie, too.  So calling the police or CPS only makes her life worse….as if that was possible.  There are two things keeping Stephanie in this town and in this situation.  Her little brother and her boyfriend.  Her little brother needs her to keep him safe from their abusive parents and she needs her boyfriend to remind her that there is at least one kind and caring person in this world.   But for all of the darkness and despair in Stephanie’s life, she always remembers there is hope. Hope for a better life someday.  Hope for some justice.  Hope to be free of all of this pain and suffering.  The sun always rises the next day and with that sunrise comes the hope of a brand new day with new possibilities….of peace and love.  Will she ever be free of her old life and able to find a new one?

Oh my, this book was really heavy.  But it was also a stark reminder that there are very similar and very real situations happening in this world right this very minute.  I appreciated Elora bringing these situations to life in this book because sometimes we need a reminder that there is someone out there in need of help.  Maybe it will be a call to action for some readers and that would be an amazing thing.  Stephanie absolutely broke my heart.  She broke my heart not because of what she is going through, but because her spirit, though buried deep, was never broken.  I can’t imagine living her life.  Now, onto the rest of the characters.  I wish Stephanie’s father a long afterlife in hell.  And I wish his “friends” ended up there to join him.  Oh, and her mom, too.  They all deserve a special kind of hell.  But Kevin, Stephanie’s boyfriend, is beyond special.  He’s a football star and I admired his ability to look past outer appearances and to be able to discover who Stephanie is a person.  He picks her up when she is beyond down and is always there to remind her that she is worthy of a happy life.  This brings me to the ending….which I have to say I had a love/hate relationship with.  It gave me some closure and hope for Stephanie but was also a bit of a cliffhanger.  (Knowing that some of you aren’t fans of cliffhanger endings, I feel as though I should mention it.)

There is (hopefully!) going to be a book two and I will be anxiously waiting to see what the future holds for Stephanie and Kevin.

Thank you, Elora, for a relevant, harrowing and poignant story that will stay with me for quite some time.  I will be thinking of Stephanie and Kevin until the next installment!

Yes, Master by Margaret McHeyzer….Blog Tour Stop & Review

20140225-162426.jpg

Synopsis:

My uncle abused me.

I was 10 years old when it started.

At 13 he told me I was no longer wanted because I had started to develop.

At 16 I was ready to kill him.

Today, I’m broken.

Today, I only breathe to survive.

My name’s Sergeant Major Ryan Jenkins and today, I’m ready to tell you my story.

“Master would flog me if I did, she won’t be happy when I tell her what happened here.”

“Master?”

“Stella.”

Oh, Master.

20140225-162431.jpg

Excerpt:

I startle awake as I leap off the bed and sprawl on the floor.

“Ry!” Mason yells from the other side of the door. I jump up off the floor and swing the bedroom door open.

“You scared the shit out of me, Mason.” I run my hand over my eyes and face trying to wake up. “What do you want, man?” But I’m met with silence. When I look over at Mase, he’s staring at my body. He’s mouth’s open and his eyes are so wide. He rakes his stare down my body, then back up again. He lifts an eyebrow as he ogles me. I look down and notice I’m completely naked. I fell asleep on my bed with just the towel wrapped around me and he scared me with his bashing that now I’m standing before him totally exposed.

He’s not moving away, and neither am I.

“Mason.” I lower my voice as he looks up at me and just stares.

He can see straight through me, totally bare and open, for him to see all my secrets.

“We need to leave in an hour,” Mase says as he takes a step closer to me.

I can feel his heat, and my body instantly reacts to him.

Don’t be a coward Ryan, just reach out and touch him.

His brown eyes turn from a hard brown into a molten chocolate as we stand a mere step apart from each other.

Our breathing is labored and rapid.

Mason reaches forward and brings his hand up to my chest, but before he touches me, his demeanor changes and he retracts it, dropping it beside his body.

“I can’t,” he whispers as he turns away from me and goes into his bedroom.

My head spins as I close my door and stand completely ashamed in my room.

He doesn’t want me.

Why would he?

I’m broken.

My Review:

Yes, Master is the first work of author Margaret McHeyzer’s that I have read and has definitely left an impression on me.  Emotional, heartwrenching, intense and touching, this book is certainly not for everyone but I imagine those who have read it feel the same way…you can’t help but love Ryan and want desperately for him to get his happy ending.

By all outward appearances, Ryan Jenkins has tried to make the best of the life he has been given.  To say it’s been hard would be a gross understatement.  You see, Ryan had been sexually molested by his uncle from the time he was ten until he turned thirteen.  As if that wasn’t bad enough, his uncle at times had invited friends to join in.  Ryan’s teen years ended with his mother sending him away to the Army and that ended up being the best thing for him…..until now, when even that couldn’t help him anymore.  The nightmares were back.  The vial and unpleasant memories were back.  Feelings of confusion and  uncertainty threaten to take Ryan down…for good.  Things start to chance when his best friend, Mason, comes to visit and he is introduced to a lifestyle he never would have imagined could help take control of his inner demons and darkest secrets.  It was somewhat shocking finding out his best friend was into the world of BDSM, but what was even more shocking to Ryan was his curiosity into that world as well as his curiosity toward the beautiful blond Domme commanding Mason.  Is it possible Ryan may have found a way to cope with his heinous past in BDSM?  God, he hoped so….there wasn’t anywhere else to turn at this point.

To say that this novel was graphic and heartbreaking would be putting it mildly.  Again, I will repeat that this book will not be for everyone.  Don’t get me wrong, because I really did enjoy this book.  Ryan’s story was so touching and I just kept thinking that I’m sure there are so many similar and very real stories out there like Ryan’s and that’s what kept me reading.  I was pulling for him from the very beginning.  After a failed marriage, a horrific childhood, and the struggle just to live day to day, I wanting nothing more than for Ryan to find some sort of peace and happiness.  Luckily, his best friend Mason comes to visit at a most dire time and unknowingly helps Ryan.  He had never told anyone of his darkest years and when he was finally able to open up, and take a chance with Mason and his Domme, it was an immeasurable leap in the right direction.  There were many moments that had me crying and there were many moments that had me wondering if Ryan could ever move past his abuse.  I won’t give anything away, but I will say that the ending had me elated.  This story really held a message of hope and the possibility to heal was right around the corner.

Thank you, Margaret, for one hell of an emotional and touching read.

I don’t do ‘normal’.

I’ve found that the more I write, the more I like being different to other authors. I write in first person, and I love to challenge a reader.
I take the normal and switch it around.
For me, I really enjoy getting a reaction from a reader. So if I can evoke an emotion (regardless of if it’s the emotion the reader wants) then I figure that I’ve done my job as an author I want to be.
I really quite revel in taking people out of their comfort zones and pushing them to read something different.
My genre of writing is, well quite frankly, where ever my mind goes. I won’t label myself because I don’t like sticking to one genre.
My goal with writing is just to take people away from whatever is going on in their lives, even if it’s only for a split second.
I’m a go with the flow sort of person and don’t really take a course of action to get where I am going. I live in the moment and don’t usually worry about tomorrow because whatever life is due to bring me, I’ll be happy to accept.
I love my family and friends and will help anyway I can if someone needs it. I really don’t like people that are nasty just because they can be, I don’t believe that’s necessary, I mean life’s hard enough as it is!
I hope you enjoy my books, I’ve had a hoot writing them. There’s more to come…..
Til next time.

Synopsis:

Carter was captivated by Ellyson Evans the moment he laid eyes on her, but she was the one girl who didn’t beg for his attention.

He wanted her.

Ellyson vowed to never fall in love, because love can destroy you, but then she met Carter Jennings.

She wanted him.

Unwilling to risk their comfortable friendship, neither confessed their desires.

Losing touch after college, a chance meeting reconnects them.

They want each other.

But love in the city is never quite that easy.

My Review:

Wanted By You is the debut novel from author Steph Nuss and the first in her Love in the City Series.  Wow…what a kick ass debut.  I loved this book!

Carter and Ellyson met the very first day of their college career and became fast and close friends.  But that’s all they ever were.  Close friends.  Oh, not because they didn’t have feelings that went beyond that because they both did.  They both also had reasons for never acting upon those feelings and so it stayed in the ‘friend zone” for them.  Soon college would be over and Carter had to head home to Texas to help his family’s business and they lost touch.  Fast forward to five years later….

Carter Jennings can’t believe he’s finally back in New York and has landed a fabulous job as an English professor at his college alma matter.  Of course being back here reminds him of Ellyson and has him wondering even more what she is doing these days and where she is.  He can’t believe he let her slip away from him five years ago.  He knew now without a doubt that she was the one woman for him.  Now that he’s getting his life together back in NY, he knows his next mission is to tack her down.  Little did he know that he wouldn’t have to look too far…

Psychologist Ellyson Evans has made her dreams come true after graduation by opening her own practice and doing what she’s dreamed of.  Mental health and helping others.  She loved being able to stay in New York and stay close to her dad.  After losing her mom to cancer when she was younger, he was her only family and she wouldn’t dream of leaving.  Not even to move to Texas.  Not that Carter had asked her anything like that when he left.  Elly was the one who secretly pined for Carter, not the other way around.  She still missed him every day, even five years later.  Turns out she wouldn’t have to miss him much more when she runs into him while visiting a professor friend and immediately knows she won’t let him get away twice.

Fate clearly had a plan for Carter and Elly and brought them back together at just the right time.  It may have taken five years, but now they were both ready to admit their feelings and give love a try.  But would it be enough to get past old fears?

Oh my, how I loved this book!  I read it on my flight home from vacation and the poor man in front of me had to deal with my giggling, dreamy sighs and ugly tears….but I couldn’t help it!  Carter and Elly’s story is just so good!  I loved getting to read when they met and how close they became but what I loved more was that they went their separate ways and came back older and wiser.  They were able to grow together as well as apart and when they were ultimately reunited, they were ready to admit they both held feelings that went much deeper than friends.  Carter is just so amazing.  He is sexy, smart, caring, and will do anything for Elly.  He practically does.  He had me in a puddle of lovey-dovey goo by the end of this book.  Seriously, he may be one of the most perfect guys ever.  He’s there for Elly when she needs him most (no spoilers but I will say she goes through some serious things and will really need him!) and I loved him even more for that.  Elly is a great match for Carter.  She is smart, beautiful, confident, and kind.  She is also afraid.  Afraid of loving and losing…the way she lost her mother.  Luckily for her, Carter isn’t one to back away when the road gets rough.

The ending to this book was simply perfect and had me crying happy tears and grinning a big goofy grin.  Oh, how I loved it!

There’s also a fabulous cast of characters in Carter and Elly’s friends.  I can’t wait to read more of this series!

Thank you, Steph, for a fabulous book and for giving us Carter and Elly!

Synopsis:

Not Even Death Keeps a Good Demoness Down

There’s never an end to the crazy when you’re demon spawn. Not that Faith Bettincourt’s complaining. She’s been patching things up with her angelic on-again off-again boyfriend, Matt, and her best-friend-turned-sister-in-law is soon giving birth to the Anti-Christ Part Deux. Oh, and Faith is saving kids from Death in her pediatric unit one soul at a time. Life is good.

Until Faith accidentally runs over the Angel of Death and is forced to take his place. Now she’s taking lives instead of saving them. Which is kind of a problem when you’re a nurse. As if that weren’t bad enough, she is suddenly thrust into the worst scenario of them all–Matt’s ex Brenda is back, and she’s brought the Apocalypse with her.

Faith’s not about to give up the world…or her man. But when the chips are down, what’s a demoness supposed to do? Besides take matters into her own hands, of course.

Excerpt:

“Close your eyes,” Death said. “Then just like you moved your power from your stomach to the base of your skull, take that power and let it travel down your arms and into your fingers. Imagine watching it slide from you and into Ignatius.”

I did exactly as Death instructed and closed my eyes, imagining a blue-black knot of power traveling down my arms and up into the tiny hamster feet resting on my hands. Iggy let out a muffled squeak and I opened my eyes. I felt lighter somehow. Like there was nothing inside of me that could do harm. “So did I do it?”

“I think that would be an unabashed yes.” Death nodded toward my hands, and I looked down to see that Iggy had sprouted little black wings and two flea-sized black horns. He flapped his wings lazily and lifted off of my hands as a little black tail sprouted out of his hind end.

“Oh yeah!” I threw my hands up in the air and wiggled a bit. “Look at that. Iggy and I have this totally off the hook.”

“Ignatius,” Death said his face stern. “The hamster’s name is Ignatius.”

“Only to those who haven’t spared his life today. Those of us with awesome, but completely contained, powers over the forces of life and death can call him Iggy.”

“Iggy?” Matt asked from the doorway.

“He’s our new evil hamster of death.” I gave him my brightest smile as the hamster began flittering around the deck, his little tail lashing back and forth as he sniffed at things, snorting little bits of fire out of his nose.

“Our new what?”

“Evil hamster,” I said. “Iggy is my new snuggle buddy.”

About the author:

I’m a small town girl who was blessed with a large tree in the backyard that was a perfect spot for reading on summer days. Mixed with too much imagination it made me a bratty child but fated me to become a storyteller. After a stint of “thinking practically” in my twenties I earned degrees in Business and Economics and worked for a software firm in southwestern Germany but my passion has always been a good book. I currently lives in Pittsburgh with my two wonderful kids and a husband that learned the gourmet art of frozen pizzas to give me more time to write. When I’m not writing I can be found fencing and arguing with my dogs about plot points. Most days the Beagle wins but the Dalmatian is in close second. I’m in a distant third.

Seasons in the Sun by Kristen Strassel….Blog Tour Stop & Guest Post

Seasons In The Sun Cover

Welcome to my stop on the Season in the Sun by Kristen Strassel Blog Tour!

Kristen has stopped by today with a fabulous guest post that I know you will enjoy.  Thanks for stopping by!

Synopsis:

Summer has finally arrived, along with a boy who will forever change the life of fourteen-year-old Callie. After growing up hearing stories about Tristan Trevosier and his famous family, Callie finally meets him when he spends the summer on Martha’s Vineyard. Seventeen-year-old Tristan is a hurricane of destruction and rebellion, and he quickly blows a hole right into Callie’s sheltered life. Callie sees a side of Tristan that he doesn’t show anyone else. She’s determined to make everyone see what she sees in him.

Callie defies her parents by leaving the island with Tristan. But when his ugly habits rear their head, Callie realizes maybe she’s the one who’s wrong about him. He’s beyond her help. But it’s too late for her to walk away. This summer, she learns that love can be stronger than reason.

Kristen’s Guest Post:

LEGENDS OF THE FALL is one of my favorite movies. Something captivated me from the very first time I saw it. Brad Pitt’s character is my original Tristan. Of course, they share a name and good looks, but as I watched the movie again the other night, I realized that if Seasons in the Sun and the books that follow in The Night Songs collection were set in the early 1900’s, they could very well be much like Legends of the Fall.

Towards the end of the movie, Albert says to Tristan (forgive me for paraphrasing), “I did everything right, and played by all the rules. You played by none of the rules, and they all loved you more.”

I almost started jumping up and down on my couch when he said that. YES. There’s something about bad boys, not the kind that we see on the six o clock news or have prison tattoos, but the ones that dance to the beat of their own drummer that has always drawn me in.

Free spirits are sexy. Artists, creatives, anyone who dares to ask why. Someone who doesn’t like what they see, and has the balls to change it.

When I was a young girl, it never occurred to me to question the rules. Like Callie, I just did what I was asked. I wanted to be good. I wanted to make people happy. So when I got to meet people who saw things their own way, they captivated me. It was people like that who made me realize how big the world was. I didn’t relate to the lessons in my books, but I could relate to other people’s life stories.

One of my favorite things to do on days off is go to museums. Recently, I realized that art pisses me off sometimes. I’m disappointed in myself that my mind doesn’t think in a way that can create such beauty. It’s something that I admire in other people.

I keep equating bad boys with free spirits. It’s not true! Tristan does his fair share of bad, because it’s been the only way he gets attention. But Callie doesn’t care about that. Callie is drawn to him because for her, he represents all the things that her life can’t offer her. Celebrity. Excitement. Respect. It’s hard to come by at fourteen. Tristan’s not afraid to shake things up, for himself as well as the people around him.

Callie needs to know where that ride takes Tristan. And for that reason, she can’t let him go.
