EXCERPT:

He gritted his teeth. She was way too fucking spot-on for his liking. “And what do you know about me? It’s been eight years.”

She stepped even closer and ran a hand down his chest. His heart sped up at her featherlight touch. “I know you’ve avoided commitments and seem to love throwing yourself into your work. I know you feel more comfortable overseas in a jungle than you do here, in a hotel lobby. I know the last place you want to be right now is here, with me.” Her hand dropped. “Am I right?”

Damn it all to hell, she was too fucking good. He curled

his hands into fists, refusing to touch her even though he couldn’t think of anything else he’d rather be doing right now. “Pretty damn close except for the last part. I’m finding this whole encounter enlightening, to say the least.”

She smiled and bit down on the corner of her lip as if she tried to stop it. It was adorable and sexy all in one. Just like her. “How so?”

“Like I said, you aren’t the same person you were in Mexico.”

Her smile widened. “But I bet you are.”

“Care to find out?” he asked, crossing his arms. “We could—”

“Yeah. I don’t know about that.” She crossed her arms and considered him. “The last performance wasn’t all that great for me to revisit it. Especially the ending.”

Wait. What? He hadn’t been talking about revisiting the bedroom, for God’s sake. He’d been talking about revisiting their friendship. But now she had to go and throw that insult out there? He growled. “The hell it wasn’t.”

“Don’t like the sound of that, Doctor?”

He stepped closer, his heart pounding. “Yeah, because I know you liked it. Don’t lie to me.”

R.L. Stine on FaceOff:

Why did you decide to use Slappy the Ventriloquist Dummy in FaceOff?

They [Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child] have a real character. They have this albino FBI agent, Agent Pendergast, who’s in all their books, and their books are huge sellers. And I do a different character every month. ‘Goosebumps’ never has the same character twice, pretty much  My most popular character is Slappy, the evil dummy, from ‘Night of the Living Dummy,’ and I just thought, What would happen if we took Pendergast, who’s in the real world and put him in a weird R.L. Stine world where people tell him, ‘Well, you’re not even an FBI agent. We don’t know what you’re doing.’ And then I just threw in this evil ventriloquist dummy, just to be weird.

They said: ‘Why don’t you come up with the story? You come up with the plot, and then we’ll write it and then send it to you and you can rewrite what we did.’ And that was the whole process.

I’m always amazed by people who collaborate. I never collaborate with anybody. I don’t know how it’s done.

Synopsis:

Out of the frying pan. . .and into the fire!

Desperate to escape the spotlight of her failed marriage to a fellow celebrity-chef, Carly di Matisse left New York City for a tiny town in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The restaurant she’s running these days may not be chic, but in Pine Mountain she can pretend to be the tough cookie everybody knows and loves. Until she finds herself spending too much time with a way-too-hot contractor whose rugged good looks melt her like butter…

Jackson Carter wasn’t looking for love. But he’s not the kind of man to walk away from a worksite—or from a fiery beauty whose passionate nature provides some irresistible on-the-job benefits…

It’s the perfect temporary arrangement for two ravenous commitment-phobes, except that Jackson and Carly keep coming back for seconds… and thirds… and fourths…

My review:

Gimme Some Sugar is the second book in author Kimberly Kincaid’s Pine Mountain Series and follows Turn up the Heat, a book I adored. Well, Kimberly does it again with this sweet and sassy story. I loved it!

Carly di Matisse is used to life in a chaotic restaurant kitchen. She thrives on it. It’s been he life’s passion and she has made one hell of a name for herself in the culinary world. Unfortunately she’s made that name along side her soon to be ex-husband and the divorce has lead her to the small town in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Carly now finds herself having to balance starting at a new restaurant, turning it into one of her signature successes, and battling in a bitter divorce. With the way Carly’s luck was going, she wasn’t really surprised when, during a storm, a huge tree comes crashing down on her deck and decimates it. Things start looking up when the contractor in charge of fixing it turns out to be a delicious piece of eye candy. But Carly wasn’t ready to dive into the dating scene just yet so for now, she would look and not touch. The problem with living in a small town is that keeping distance from people isn’t an easy task and soon Carly finds herself running into Jackson more and more…she also finds herself looking forward to it. Will Jackson be what Carly needs to make a new start…both in life and love?

Jackson Carter is in a pickle. He’s happy with his single guy lifestyle, dating on and off, and keeping things unattached. But his mother isn’t and with a family party coming up, he knows it’ll be miserable if he doesn’t bring a date. With the help of his friends, he’s come up with a plan for that party but the problem was the long run. He really didn’t want to settle down just yet but he knows he really should start thinking about it. And the one person who’s gotten him to start that thinking is the chef whose deck he’s rebuilding. There’s something about Carly that calls to him and it’s getting harder and harder for him to ignore. Could she be the one to make him ditch his bachelor ways?

Take two people both dead set against a relationship, add some intense chemistry and even the most unwilling will find themselves believing in love.

This book was delicious. What I loved was that neither Carly nor Jackson was looking for any type of relationship. Both were pretty resistant at the idea and then all of a sudden, neither one could deny the magnetic pull between them. Carly’s got her hands full with her jerk of an ex and starting a new kitchen and Jackson is the quintessential bachelor and loves his life. But you know what they say about finding love when you least expect it! Adding another fabulous layer to this story are the strong family ties both Carly and Jackson have with their mothers. It was so touching that Jackson cared so much for his ma and what she wanted for him and his life. The same goes for Carly. Even though Carly’s mom isn’t happy she’s getting divorced, and it has been a hot button issue between them, Carly still wants to make her mom happy. That type of mother/child closeness was a treat to read.

But my favorite thing about Kimberly’s writing, besides dynamic characters and smoking hot chemistry, is how she includes the art of food into her stories. Kimberly’s passion for the culinary arts comes out in her descriptive narrative on flavors, tastes and smells. It’s truly an experience to read. And of course, always makes me hungry!

Thank you, Kimberly, for another mouth-watering read. I can’t wait to see what’s next for our favorite Pine Mountain gang!

About the author:

Kimberly Kincaid Author PicKimberly Kincaid writes contemporary romance novels that split the difference between sexy and sweet, taking the traditional idea of boy-meets-girl and infusing it with a sassy magic all her own. She believes in fiery yet flawed characters destined for a crash-course in falling in love– usually the hard way– and injects her trademark humor as well as poignant touches into her writing to create her stories.

Kimberly’s writing journey has led down some bumpy roads (that first manuscript is under the bed, where it is very likely to stay), but there has been some fresh pavement too (her second manuscript earned her very first contest final, and landed the fantastic Maureen Walters at the Curtis Brown Literary Agency). One thing is certain — the wild ride of being a writer is a lot richer in both its ups and downs because of friends and readers along the path.

When Kimberly’s not sitting cross-legged in an ancient desk chair known as “The Pleather Bomber”, she can be found practicing obscene amounts of yoga, whipping up anything from enchiladas to eclairs in her kitchen, or curled up with her nose in a book. She resides in northern Virginia with her wildly patient husband and their three daughters.

This Year’s Black by Avery Flynn….Blog Tour Stop & Review

TYB Blog Tour Button

ThisYear'sBlackHighRes

Synopsis:

A fighter since birth, Allegra “Ryder” Falcon would rather trade in her all-black wardrobe for head-to-toe hot pink than let anyone ever see the cracks in her tough exterior. But one night with a stranger changes everything.

Devin Harris may have given up his MMA fighting dreams for high fashion, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t always in control. So when someone embezzles millions under his watch, he isn’t going to let the private investigator working the case go it alone—even if she is the woman who blew him away in bed and then blew him off.

Just when it seems like it couldn’t get any hotter between Ryder and Devin, the case takes them to a tropical paradise where the danger increases. From the catwalk to the pineapple fields, they have to work together to track down the missing millions before the thief finds—and kills—them.

My review:

This Year’s Black is the second book in author Avery Flynn’s Killer Style series and follows High Heeled Wonder. Like the perfect sweater you love to pair with your favorite worn skinny jeans and pumps, This Year’s Black is a total must in your book wardrobe!

Growing up with all boys, Allegra “Ryder” Falcon is used to having to fight for what she wants. She’s never shied away from a challenge and her biggest one yet is placed in her lap when her brother, and owner of the security firm she’s an investigator with, finally gives her her own case. One she can run exactly how she wants. Of course when she sees who she’ll be working with, run is exactly what she wants to do. Out the door to be exact. One night with a delicious ex-MMA fighter has left her off-kilter and after swearing off relationships for a year, and ignoring his phone calls for too many weeks to count, it would figure that he’s the one she’s set to help with this investigation. What are the odds? Fate must have been wearing her fat day jeans when she threw this mess together. Ryder has no choice but to try her best to ignore the attraction she’s been ignoring since that one hot and steamy night and get all her focus on this case. Too much was at stake. Of course that was all easier said than done when they have to leave the country to go after their suspect. Too much time spent together in too small a space and one thing is bound to lead to another.

Former MMA fighter turned fashion mogul Devin Harris knows there’s a thief in his company and he knows he’s gotta put an end to it. Especially before the impending merger is set to happen because if he didn’t, there would be no merger. He has too many regrets from his past and won’t allow this company to fall because some greedy employee can’t keep her fingers out of the till. Never in a million years did he think the woman he couldn’t stop thinking about since she left his bed would be the one to help save him. Now he not only has a chance to save the company, but also a chance to win Ryder. She wouldn’t end up being a regret he would have to live with.   With a little bit of luck, she would be in his life long after this investigation ends. If they both survive it….

The attraction Ryder is trying to ignore is exactly what Devin will count on to revive the passion they shared that one night. In the midst of death threats, catching a thief, and kicking bad guy ass, will they be able to find something strong and meaningful?

Oh man, I loved this book! Ryder is a strong and confident woman with more than a few hidden soft spots. She’s got a rough and tough personality but knows what her weaknesses are…one being the gorgeous Devin. Knowing she has too much to prove to her family, she tries her best to ignore him and keep him at arm’s length. Ha! With Devin’s persistent ways, she doesn’t stand a chance. That man knows exactly what he’s up against and he may have had many fights in the ring, but he realizes Ryder may be his toughest fight yet. The chemistry and passion between these two is as hot as those red-heeled stilettos we all love. Delicious. The back and forth between them was really well done. Just enough without being too much or not enough.

Of course, all the while the hunt for the embezzler added an intense layer to this story and kept me on the edge of my seat. It was quite a chase for these two and I was worried more than once someone would get seriously hurt. Luckily, Ryder and Devin both have some serious ass-kicking moves.

Over all, this book has it all. Passion, heat, danger, mystery and action all wrapped up in a stylish package. Thank you, Avery, for yet another fantastic read!

About the author: AFlynnAvery Flynn has three slightly-wild children, loves a hockey-addicted husband and is desperately hoping someone invents the coffee IV drip. She fell in love with romance while reading Johanna Lindsey’s Mallory books. It wasn’t long before Avery had read through all the romance offerings at her local library. Needing a romance fix, she turned to Harlequin’s four books a month home delivery service to ease the withdrawal symptoms. That worked for a short time, but it wasn’t long before the local book stores’ staffs knew her by name. Avery was a reader before she was a writer and hopes to always be both. She loves to write about smartass alpha heroes who are as good with a quip as they are with their *ahem* other God-given talents. Her heroines are feisty, fierce and fantastic. Brainy and brave, these ladies know how to stand on their own two feet and knock the bad guys off theirs.

The Token (Volumes 1-3) by Marata Eros…Blog Tour Stop & Review

BT The Token Series Final

The Token Volumes 1-3

The Token Synopsis:

From New York Times & USA Today bestselling author Marata Eros~

Three volumes ***Limited time only*** A savings of $6!

The Token Series revolves around heroine Faren Mitchell and self-made billionaire hero Jared “Mick” McKenna. The two literally collide when Mick accidentally runs into Faren while riding his Harley. A mix of chemistry, tragedy, murder and unrequited love transpire in a series of six, dark installments….

The Token 1

Synopsis:

Twenty-two year old Faren Mitchell hears the two words that change her abbreviated life forever. They’re so final Faren decides she has nothing to lose by seizing every remaining moment of what life has to offer.

Until Faren collides with a motorcycle ridden by billionaire Jared McKenna.

Even the dark secret of her past and catharsis as a physical therapist can’t save Faren from the sexual spiral that waits for her in the arms of a man who commits to no one. When circumstances force her to get a second job as an exotic dancer, Faren never imagines how close that choice will bring her to the brink of a new reality she is unequipped to handle.

My review:

Intense.  That’s the one word I would use to describe the beginning of Fallon’s story and ultimately the beginning of the series.  At 22 years old, Faren was never expecting to be given an expiration date on her life.  But that’s exactly what has happened.  In a moment of blind panic and fear for what’s to come, she flees her doctor’s office and the horrible outlook she’s been given and is slammed into by a motorcycle.  At the time she has no way of knowing it was being driven by young and gorgeous billionaire Jared McKenna but she will soon find out.  And when she does? The game changes.  Despite knowing she has very limited time left, she can’t help but fall into Jared and all his delicious sexual presence.

She also finds herself in a time crunch in regards to helping pay for ill her mother’s care.  How much more could a 22-year-old girl handle?  It’s this crunch that leads her into a life she never wanted to be in but one that was necessary.

What would Jared think if he knew she had turned to exotic dancing to help pay her bills?  She would hate to find out….

This opening installment has the perfect amount of heat and suspense.  Jared, aka Mick, is mysterious and a bit rough around the edges for a man in his station in life which leads you to believe there’s one hell of a story behind him.  Faren is so incredibly strong for a 22-year-old and I have admired her from the first page.  Incredible start.

We are left wanting more but not left hanging.  I truly appreciate that in a serial series!

The Token 2

Synopsis:

Faren Mitchell keeps the secret of her second job from the one man who could see her through some of the darkest moments of her life. She doesn’t want Jared “Mick” McKenna for the billions he’s amassed, but for the one thing she’s never given any man: her innocence.

Mick’s guilt over the injury he inflicted fuels the beginnings of something more; a sexual consumption of each other that neither were anticipating. When Faren’s actions don’t match her words, Mick suspicions are raised. His feelings turn to ones of protection after Faren is mugged and he can’t reconcile his desire for her with the reality they now find themselves in.

As Faren’s bucket list grows, so does the danger that surrounds the choices she’s made. Can she take what she needs from Mick and also secure her mother’s life? Or will the truth she has weaved between the lies doom them both?

My review:

Heated is the word I would use to describe this second installment.  What started out as an accidental meeting between Faren and Jared, aka Mick, is slowly turning into a full-blown scorching attraction between them.  But they both have their secrets to keep.  Mick and his background and how he came to be one of the “other half” and Faren and her less than savory second job.  It wasn’t the dancing that was less than savory, it was the private parties she’d decided to take on to earn even more money, faster.  Deep down though, Faren knows no matter what she does for a second job, she is pure and still untouched.  It’s that knowledge that keeps her from losing her mind when she was doing lap dances on strangers.

Still, though, every time she sees Mick she wants to come clean.  She ultimately knows better and knows he wouldn’t be so understanding of that.  Why did she have to be falling for him so hard and so fast?  Considering the time she has left, maybe it was a good thing this is how it was going…

To make matters worse a nightmare from her past shows up and threatens to take what little time she has left from her.  Of course, this is just another secret Faren doesn’t want Mick to find out about.  But she’s been handing this for years and she wasn’t going to give up now.  She could handle this latest obstacle and hopefully end it once and for all.  Of course Mick wants to help but keeping the true situation to herself is better for both of them…so she thinks.

Whoa.  The heat and sexual attraction between Mick and Faren is positively delicious and reaching a fevered pitch in this second installment.  But besides the heat, there is plenty of emotion for the reader to feel.  That anxious feeling Faren is going to going to be found out by Mick and what his reaction will be had me biting my nails while reading.  But, I love that feeling!

Fantastic second installment!

The Token 3

Synopsis:

Faren collapses, narrowly escaping discovery upon hearing traumatic news delivered by Thorn. When Thorn becomes her uneasy accomplice in the deception of Mick, Faren decides she needs to come clean with the truth. Shelving her pride might be the last thing she wants to do, but as facts and actions continue to contradict one another, her hands become tied in the lies she creates to survive.

Faren only needs one last lap dance to erase the final debt that hangs over her mother’s head like a cloud of doom. But when Ronnie Bunce circles closer to Faren and threatens the last sanctuary she possesses, circumstances unravel to reveal lies that run deeper than she knew.

Can Faren and Mick consummate their passion before her deceit is discovered? Or will the last dance be the ultimate loss?

My review:

Gut-wrenching perfectly describes this third installment of The Token.

Faren is so close to having all of her mom’s care paid up and she only needs to do this one last gig and she can quit the life she’s hated leading.  Mick still hadn’t found out about these “events’ and hopefully she could just keep it on the down low for one more night.  Things were heating up and getting serious between them and her feelings were growing for this amazing and complex man and she didn’t want to ruin it.  Of course, her deteriorating health would have to come up, but not yet.  She would enjoy what she’s found with Mick until she absolutely HAD to tell him.

There was still a threat out there to her safety but she was feeling more and more confident that all of that would work out, too.  All of that changes when she sees Mick…at her last “event”.  She knows in an instant that he is crushed and she knows things have been ruined.  The question is, is it beyond repair?

Oh my…the ending of this installment killed me.  I was crushed for both Faren and Mick and am, at this very moment, worried sick for the future of their relationship.  I immediately bought the rest of the series and will be devouring them this weekend to see what the fates have in store for Faren and Mick.  Both deserve a happy ending and I am praying Mick can forgive Faren for what she’s had to do to survive these past few months.

An Excerpt from TouchStone for ever, Chapter 13…

With dexterous hands, he leans back and unbuttons my dress; it falls from my arms and flutters to the carpet like falling leaves. I’m standing without shoes; flimsy underwear is all that lies between my modesty and my nakedness.

He lowers my hands from his chest to his hips and them places them on his belt, inviting me to relieve him of his trousers, all the time kissing and nibbling the skin beneath my ear.

I quickly unfasten the belt and release the buttons so the zipper comes down almost of its own accord. With my eyes closed I slide my hand down his jeans, over muscle and through pubic hair until I have him wrapped in one hand. He groans into my neck and the heat of his desire scorches my skin, urging me to tighten my grip and feel the pulse of a rigid cock rippling in my hand. He’s dipping and shuddering, making the kind of noises that have me clenching and so aroused I can barely stand.

With steaming breath he whispers, “Show me how to love you, Beth.”

With my free hand I move his hand to my left shoulder and ease down my bra strap. He follows through, left and right and leans into me to unclip it before it falls and dangles off my right wrist. I begin to pull out my hand.

“Leave it where it is,” he says with a smile and then proceeds to snap the strap and toss it across the room. With it discarded, I am captured in candlelight. This is the first time he has seen my naked breasts. Before, there was only the glow of moonlight. Now there are shadows and the flickering light cast by 20 candles. I feel exposed and lower my head, embarrassed by his stare.

“Look at me!”

I raise my eyes to meet his. “Don’t ever be shy about who you are. You are beauty personified. I have lived many lifetimes, travelled through space and time; read a thousand books and recited a hundred poems, but even I cannot find the words to describe you.” He rests his palms on my breasts and strokes my nipples with the pad of his thumbs, making my body tremble.

“See how you respond? Your body recognises the touch of these hands and no other. These hands are the key to untold pleasures.”

I throw my head back as I feel his erection growing, forcing its way through material, seeking freedom from containment. With both hands I lower his jeans and boxers, allowing it to spring free. When I see it, I gasp. It’s bigger than I remembered, standing long and thick without support. I’m aroused further by its magnificence.

“Give me your hand.”

I lift up my right hand. Enfolding it with his own, he places it around the skin coated rod of iron and begins to move my fingers and thumb up and down the length of it; rolling my thumb back and forth on the upward motion.

With a throaty voice he urges me to give him my other hand. I do.

He places it between my legs, his hand over mine, his firm fingers sliding between my own until they are wet and soaked. With our hands moving rhythmically he begins to fuck my mouth with his tongue. He moans into me, stimulating me even more, and I gasp, caught up in a sexual frenzy that has us both teetering on the edge of an orgasmic high.”

About Sydney Jamesson – in her own words

There are those moments in life when a person you respect says something to you that strikes a chord, we’ve all had them … that moment came one Parents’ Evening when I was 16. An inspirational teacher said; “Your daughter should consider a career in Journalism or as a writer, she has a vivid imagination and a flair for creative writing …” As a wide-eyed teenager, those words were music to my ears. How prophetic was it that I went on to do just that …

I have worked in Insurance, Fashion and in advertising as a Copywriter and Commercial Journalist and loved every minute of it; creative people are a lot of fun to be around. I swapped the day job for a more meaningful enterprise: having our daughter Jenna. Now 29, she’s a fiercely independent woman living the dream in Australia. She was a heavenly surprise that had me working freelance for four years, doing what I could between feeds, playgroups and afternoon lessons in preparation for starting school. It’s a ‘story’ we can all identify with, I’m sure.

I made a sideways move into teaching in 1997 and, six years later, became Head of English in a High School, making it my mission in life to introduce young people to a range of quality reading material. I try to foster a love of all things creative in my students and encourage them to find that creativity within themselves.

For as long as I can remember, I have lived with The Story of Us in my head. The fact that Elizabeth Parker is an English teacher should come as no surprise; as novelists we write, initially, about what we know … Yet, I should confess, she isn’t me but rather that young, sensitive and naïve woman we all were or still are. The difference being, she has been victimized and, because of it, remained hidden. But, unlike some characters who may have suffered at the hands of others, she is not damaged: wary yes, but not damaged. She still believes people are innately good and that is one of her many qualities. It is her propensity for compassion that allows her to invite Ayden Stone into her world when, on the face of it, he’s exactly what she doesn’t need.

So that’s me, furiously typing away until the early hours, unveiling the intricacies of a 21st century fairy-tale; creating an epic story that melds a heady mixture of romance suspense and a touch of the miraculous.

Excerpt:

He thinks, in this moment, that we’re making love. He fills me slowly as I lie beneath him. Arms laced around his neck. Legs spread open wide, inviting him in deeper as he makes a meal out of my tits. He believes everything I want him to. He always has. But this is merely a game for me. A game he foolishly has fallen into. He never questions my love for him, and now my body writhes underneath his and moans in mock pleasure as he comes hard, jerking his hips into me, telling me how much he loves me, and I give his words right back.

“God, I love you so much,” I pant.

His head is nestled in the yoke of my neck as he tries to calm his breathing, and when he lifts up, I run my fingers through his hair and over his damp scalp as he looks into my eyes.

“You’re so stunning like this.”

“Like what?” I question softly.

“Sated.”

Idiot.

Excerpt:

Xander Wilde

The magic of rock and roll—it casts a spell on you. I’m no exception. I’m a band manager and I’m living the dream, touring with The Wilde Ones, helping them secure their well-deserved place in the music industry. I love being a part of it all, especially watching the band perform live—the crowds, the cheers, the music. It’s a high and a low all at once and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Every step of the way with this band has been fun, exciting, stressful—every possible emotion. Obviously we’ve had some breaks but mostly we all put in a lot of hard work—myself, Garrett Flynn, Phoenix Harper, River Wilde, and now Zane Perry.

“Can you hear me now?” he bellows.

I nod my head as my heart pounds in my chest. My hands feel cold and clammy and a nervousness that makes me weak and shaky takes over. Doubts race through my head and I’m questioning if he’s going to make it through this. A vague awareness that something bad could happen kicks around in my mind and I can’t shake it. The Wilde Ones are doing a sound check on stage and Zane’s not on his game.

It’s July and the weather has been brutally hot. But today it seems cooler. Maybe it’s the California weather maybe it’s the excitement of being home. The Beautiful Lies Tour bus finally rolled back into our home state of California after six months away. When we pulled into the amphitheater, we could see tanned kids in board shorts and bikini tops already lined up at the will call window. Security guards in polo shirts directed us to the artist parking lot, and we were officially home. Tonight we’ll be headlining our biggest show to date. We’re on tour without my brother, River, and still more than half of the shows are sold out, including tonight’s. River quit the band—touring just wasn’t for him but even so the album is on its way up the charts. Who knows it may even hit gold status. The songs on the album were written and sung by River but are performed in concert by Zane. Having him as my brother’s replacement has been the key to our successful transition in a world where replacing leads is normally unsuccessful—simply put, we’re lucky as hell to have him. River promised to make a surprise appearance at our next stop. It’s going to be epic.

But tonight is all about the arena—Mountain View and the Shoreline. “That’s enough,” I yell to the band and call rehearsal. This place is the biggest outdoor venue we’ve played and I couldn’t be more stoked—or more nervous. A sold out show and a rocking opening band—what a combination. But a lead singer with another cold and a weakened voice that can’t be heard throughout an amphitheater scares the shit out of me.

I head straight for the bus and spend the next few hours hashing out a song with Nix that he calls a jumbled mess of muscular sense and big-riff sunshine—whatever the hell that means. All I know is that it needs help and that’s why he’s turning to me. I hadn’t played guitar since I was eighteen but for some reason over the course of this tour I’ve picked it back up. At first I used whatever was lying around but last month I had my mother mail my old one to me and it feels like home. It’s a light blue and brown Gibson and I had to have it because it was the guitar that Slash played on. Playing again seems to help pass the time and brings a calm over me that I haven’t felt in awhile.

Hours pass and before I know it, it’s almost show time. We make our way over to the Amphitheater, do the typical festival schmooze fest, and then settle back to wait. Waiting for them to take the stage is always the most nerve-racking time. I’m sitting in the practically vacant makeshift meet and greet area back stage and sipping a beer in a worthless effort to calm my nerves when a voice travels through the sound system. It’s a powerful and emotive mezzo-soprano range that is nothing short of explosive. She sounds unlike any singer I’ve ever heard before—with only one exception, Ivy Taylor. I push back the memory of her name and the emotions it evokes—the memories are just too painful. I can’t see her on stage but I know that the voice belongs to Jane Mommsen. Her band Breathless is playing right before The Wilde Ones.

A hand on my shoulder startles me. I twist and glance up as Amy sits down beside me, crossing her legs. “Hi, Xander. I thought I saw you earlier at the hotel.”

She’s a beautiful woman—long, wavy dark hair, petite figure, very natural looking. She’s wearing jeans, a blue shirt with some kind of foil design, and silver sandals. Grinning at her I say, “Finally we catch up. Can I get you a drink?”

“I’d love that. How’s life on the road been?”

“You know, it has its ups and downs but actually not bad. You?”

“Jane’s been going full-force for a while now. But the tour ends with the summer. I’ll be glad to be back in LA.”

Standing up, I laugh. “I know the feeling. I’ll be right back, let me grab us that drink.” Tossing my empty bottle, I make my way to the coolers lined up under the tent and grab two beers. I know she’d rather have a glass of Chardonnay but beer it is. Amy is Jane’s assistant and I’ve taken her out more than a few times. We went to high school together and Amy and I know most of the same people so whenever I need a date, I ask her. Last time I saw her was almost nine months ago when I took her to River and Dahlia’s wedding.

Heading back to the table I hear Jane yell out to the crowd, “Are you ready for three of the hottest guys in music?” The audience starts screaming and the stage lights dim cuing the guys that it’s the fifteen-minute countdown until they take the stage. The band huddles together in their typical pre-performance stance. I’ll have a quick drink with Amy and then join them. As I hand her the bottle my fingers touch hers and we both grin, knowing that we will end up alone by the end of the night.

“You sticking around for the whole show?”

“I think I might,” she smiles.

“How about we ride back to the hotel together and grab a real drink at the bar?”

“Sounds like a plan.”

“Great. Time for me to get back to work.”

She rises from the table, I do the same. She stands up on her toes and kisses me quickly on the lips. “See you tonight,” she smiles.

“Catch you later,” I say and then cross the room to join the band.

“You’re late,” Nix snickers. “What’s with you two anyway?” he asks.

I shrug my shoulders. “Nothing. We casually see each other once in a while.”

Garrett raises an eyebrow. “Chicks are never cool with casual.”

Shaking my head at him, I don’t bother to disagree. Amy and I have been doing this for years. It works for her and for me. We like each other’s company but only see each other sporadically. I’ll call her once in a while and we’ll go out but we are in no way exclusive. I don’t ask her about other men and she doesn’t ask me about other women. I grab the bottle and pour the amber liquid into the shot glasses stacked on the cap. It’s our pre-show routine. A shot and a prayer, so to say. It’s Garrett’s turn tonight to ‘pray’ so this should be good.

He raises his glass. “Here’s to hoping Xander gets laid so he’ll get off our backs.”

Tipping my glass back, I quickly down the amber liquid. It burns as it makes its way down my throat. Once we’ve all drank our two shot maximum before a show Garrett follows his toast up with, “Seriously man, you need to get laid.”

The guys laugh and I actually join in. Jerking off in the small bathroom on the bus is definitely one of the downsides of touring. I’ve slept with a few girls at some of our stops but screwing groupies isn’t really my thing. I’m not one to have time for a girlfriend but I’m also not about to pull my dick out backstage, so it’s been a long six months.

Zane coughs after he slings back the shot and I look at him with concern. “You’re going to a doctor tomorrow.”

He shakes his head. “Yes, Mom, if you say so.”

“I’m not kidding. Your voice sounds like shit.”

“It’s a fucking cold. I took some medicine. I’ll be fine.”

“Doctor. Tomorrow. I mean it. I’ll have Ena set it up.”

“I can always sing,” Garrett chimes in and I smack the back of his head.

“Hey. I can.”

The lights start to flicker and I look at Zane with that feeling of uneasiness again. Second time this tour he’s coughing and hacking. We’re screwed if he really gets sick. He nods at me as I pat him on the back. Slinging his guitar over his shoulder, he heads out first raising his arm in the air. The crowd goes crazy. The six foot guy is a chick magnet and no one misses my brother tonight. Garrett heads out next yelling, “Great to be here Mountain View!” and Nix follows with his trademark nod. Zane skips his normal charming banter and I know he must be saving his voice. Again, I think about how we’re fucked if he gets sick.

I stand at the edge of the stage all night until they finally come to their last song. “It Wasn’t Days Ago,” is a simple but crowd affecting ballad and Zane belts it out. Shouts from nearly thirty thousand fans call for an encore. Turning away from the microphone Zane coughs again. Biting his thumbnail he looks over at me and I slice my finger across my neck.

“One more song for tonight,” he tells the screaming fans and my blood pressure rises. “This one is a cover, an ‘ode to’ I’ll call it. It’s for Xander Wilde, the band’s manager and it’s his favorite song. Everyone ready?” As he starts to sing Linkin Park’s “Iridescent,” I close my eyes and listen. When he hits the chorus his voice gets so low my eyes snap open. Zane turns to grab a bottle of water while the guys continue to play but I can tell something isn’t right.

***

Last night definitely didn’t go as planned—a visit to the ER, then sleeping in a chair next to Zane all night on the bus because the steroids he was given freaked him out. It’s noon and Amy and I are just arriving at the Pelican Hill Resort. Breathless was leaving right after the show last night so Amy had already planned to ride with us and meet up with them in Irvine. She invited me to some party being thrown by her band’s label that I would have rather not gone to but Ellie, the tour manager, insisted we all go for the good PR.

I’m exhausted and really need some sleep before dealing with the press and tomorrow night’s show. The paparazzi have been everywhere—by the bus as we exited to the waiting car in LA, outside the doctor’s office, at the gates of Zane’s father’s house, and now they’re here in Irvine at the hotel.

To avoid the chaos awaiting us in the lobby, I call Ellie, who is already here, and ask her to check me in and meet me at the pool bar with the key. Draping my arm around Amy, we head that way. I’ve been here a few times so I know my way around. Cutting through the grotto and over to the pool and cabanas, I steer Amy to the right and stop in my tracks as all the air rushes from my lungs.

My body floods with adrenaline and my gut twists. I don’t even have to do a double take because I’d know her anywhere. There’s no mistaking her. She’s just so beautiful—the elegant planes of her face, those high cheekbones, red lipstick, her platinum blonde hair shorter than it used to be tucked behind her ear, that face of an angel. She looks the same. No, she looks better. Her skin glistens in the sun and my gaze automatically follows the shape of her long legs. They look smooth and tan against her white bathing suit. An ache forms in my chest as I think about running my fingers up them. She’s still that eighteen-year-old girl I once knew but now she has the body of a woman—lean and toned and full of curves. When she moves it’s so familiar it doesn’t seem like a day has passed—and everything I ever felt for her, it’s all still inside me.

My pulse races at the mere sight of her. She’s lounging in the cushioned chair reading a magazine just outside a cabana. My heart slams harder in my chest when she sticks her earphones in her ears like she always used to do and it transports me back to the last time I saw her do the very same thing. We’d skipped school and were at my grandparents’ house—their pool. She was lying on the lounge chair listening to music and singing along—her voice so full of soul. I’d moved to sit with her under the guise of putting lotion of her back. She sat up and smiled that shy smile she didn’t need to have when she was with me. I squeezed the tube into my hand and after rubbing them together I slowly applied it to her back kneading my way up and down, touching every inch of her that I could.

It brings me back to the here and now when she suddenly sits up and looks over at me. Her eyes pin me in place. She looks at me as if she remembers me for who I was, what we were, not what I did to her. With my chest pounding, memories of us keep flashing through my mind. Fighting a smile, I wonder if she’s thinking the same thing—remembering what we were, what we shared, how we loved.

She quickly breaks our connection when she averts her eyes over to the man handing her a drink. I suck in a deep breath trying not to feel sick at the sight. He’s nearing fifty, wearing a terrycloth robe. He’s about my height, dark brown hair, meticulously groomed facial hair, and not exactly ripped but fit. He’s Damon Wolf, a man I’ve never actually met but hate all the same. I’ve seen their picture on TV and in magazines. He’s her agent, her fiancé, and I’m sure he’s the reason she’s not singing anymore.

She looks up at him with that same forced smile she used to give people she just wanted to appease and mouths “thank you.” I have a sudden urge to go over and deck him when her gaze shifts back to mine and he pulls her chin back to look at him. I can sense a discomfort between them. We could sense each other’s feelings even when we weren’t near each other.

Amy’s hand slides down my face and I have to blink a few times before I can hear what she’s saying. Glancing one last time at Ivy I see that she’s staring at me again. Then suddenly her mouth forms a scowl and she flicks her attention toward him. Hooking her arm around his neck, she pulls him down for a kiss and I think I might throw up.

“Are you okay?”

I nod. Not able to say a word.

“Isn’t that Ivy Taylor over there? The girl you used to date in high school?” Amy asks. There’s an irritated tone to her voice I’m not used to hearing and it makes me agitated.

“Yeah, it is,” is all I say. She’s not just a girl I used to date…she’s the only girl I ever really loved. She’s also the girl whose heart I broke. Seeing her now brings back all those feelings I blocked, ignored, tucked aside. So many times over the years I wanted to go after her and tell her the truth—but I never did. Why I don’t know. Then one day it was too late—she had gotten engaged.

Amy chatters on. “I think that’s Damon Wolf with her. We should go say hi.”

My body goes cold and my face blank at the thought. I straighten and just as I’m about to say, “No fucking way,” my phone vibrates in my pocket. Squinting at the screen, I see that it’s my brother. I look over to Amy and motion toward the bar. “Hey, this is River. I need to take it. I’ll meet you over there in a minute.”

“That’s fine. We can catch up with them later. I’ll go order us a drink.” She smiles and starts toward the bar.

Turning around to avoid staring at Ivy, I answer the phone. “It took you long enough to call me back.”

“I was in a meeting and stepped out as soon as I could, so don’t start. What did the doctor say about Zane?”

“He’s out for the rest of the tour and we’re fucked.”

“You sure? You’re back in LA for almost two weeks after tomorrow night right? Isn’t that enough time for him to heal?”

“Technically yes. But his old man wants him out. The doctor said that he couldn’t be sure how long the blood that accumulated under his vocal cords had been there but obviously last night, the amount of ruptured vessels was enough to cause his voice to change. He advised at least two weeks of rest before another evaluation to see if surgery is necessary. Zeak wants his son to take a longer period of time off. He’s just afraid that if Zane keeps singing and it keeps happening, scar tissue will build up and cause his voice to change forever.”

“Do you blame him?”

“No I don’t,” I tell River and I feel like shit that I have to put him in a position to do what he didn’t want to do in the first place. But I also know that if I don’t, the band won’t survive. If I have to cancel this tour—the Wilde Ones are done. So I ask, “Did you talk to Dahlia?”

He sighs. “Yeah, I did. She’s cool with it, Xander. I’m just trying to figure it all out.”

“You know I’ll do whatever you need me to do, right?”

“Shit why can’t you just be an ass and make it easy for me to say no?”

“Because you have no idea what this means to me.”

“Actually I do, and that’s why I’m going to make it happen. But Xander, remember I can’t play a twelve string.”

Laughter and relief take hold of me. I feel a huge weight lifted off my shoulders. “Right now I wouldn’t care if you only played the violin,” I joke.

He laughs and I add, “You’ll be here tonight?”

Now he sounds slightly annoyed. “I said I would. We might be a little late so don’t get your panties in a wad.”

“That’s cool. Thanks for everything. Hey, one more thing.’

“What?”

“Ivy Taylor’s here.”

“No way. Have you talked to her?”

“Fuck no. You know she won’t talk to me. And besides she’s with that asshole.”

“You should talk to her. Tell her the truth.”

“What’s that going to do now? She’ll just think I’m lying.”

“You want me to talk to her? I can explain everything.”

“No. I don’t need my little brother to fight my battles. I’ll talk to her if I feel the time is right. Do you hear me?”

“Whatever you say. Look, I have to run but I want to discuss this later. And Xander…you don’t know he’s an asshole. Just because Dad said his name once doesn’t mean shit.”

“Right. Okay, see you tonight,” I say and end the call. My head is spinning knowing that after all these years I’m actually in the same place she is. I want to talk to her, tell her everything but what would it matter now anyway. Glancing behind me, I catch another glimpse of her with him that turns my stomach. He’s such a slime ball. Since his father was hospitalized and he took over the business, he’s been scooping up labels, tearing them apart, and rebuilding them with bands he thinks are better fits. My guess is he picked up Jane’s label—that’s why he’s here. I heard they were having some financial difficulty and he’s just the kind of bottom feeder that would want to capitalize on not only being her agent but now also her producer. The sight of him touching Ivy makes my skin crawl.

Damon Wolf—two of the last words my father ever spoke to me before killing himself, and I never knew why. Of all the guys in the world Ivy had to end up with him—why him? I look up and they’re gone. But I’m anything but relieved. Rubbing my chin, I’m antsy, agitated, pissed as hell, but feel more alive than I have in years.

When We Met by Susan Mallery…Blog Tour Stop & Review

COVER_WH

Synopsis:

New York Times bestselling author Susan Mallery invites you back to Fool’s Gold, where a newcomer to town might finally meet the man she never knew she needed…

Angel Whittaker earned his scars the hard way, but the scars that can’t be seen are the ones that haunt him the most. Since he moved to Fool’s Gold, California, he’s cobbled together a life for himself as a bodyguard trainer. If he’s not exactly happy, at least his heart is safe.

Working with pro-football superstars taught tough-talking PR woman Taryn Crawford one thing—she can go toe to toe with any man. But then dark, dangerous former Special Ops Angel targets her for seduction…and challenges her to resist his tempting kisses.

Even in four-inch heels, Taryn never backs down. Unless, somehow, Angel can convince her that surrender might feel even better than victory.

My review:

When We Met is the 13th book in author Susan Mallery’s Fool’s Gold Series an admittedly the first in the series I have read. That being said, I never once felt lost while reading and I really appreciate authors who can write a book in that manner. Especially a book being 13th in a series! Angel and Taryn’s story was enjoyable from start to finish and I will certainly be reading the others in this series.

Non nonsense and tough as any ex-NFL player she knows, PR guru Taryn Crawford is used to life in the city, being in charge, and taking control of things. What she isn’t used to is this new life in Small Town, USA. Sure she may dress girly, with killer heels and amazing wardrobe anyone fashion lover would covet, that’s about where her girliness ends. She doesn’t like to be close to many people. Doesn’t squee and fawn over babies and weddings. That’s not her stlye and she knows herself too well at this point in her life to pretend otherwise. So when she meets Angel she sees him exactly for what he is…her perfect counterpart. He’s equally no-nonsense, says what he means and means what he says, which makes what they have perfect. No strings attached and no delusions of a happy-ever-after works for both of them….for now.

Angel Whittaker not only has numerous physical scars from years as a soldier, but two very indelible emotional ones that he’s almost certain he will never fully heal from. Ever. Which makes his strong and cut-to-the-chase Taryn perfect for him. She just gets him. He can be himself with her and make no apologies that he will never be ready to give his heart to anyone ever again. So he thinks. What started out as a light and fun physical game for both of them slowly turns into much more…and it scares Angel to death.

One of the things I loved most about this book was that Taryn and Angel have a very open and honest relationship from the start without any need to decipher what he or she meant and if there was some greater meaning behind what they say to one another. They are both very up front about having pretty messed up pasts and the inability (they think) to love again.

Taryn has many one liners in this book that made me appreciate how well she knows herself. She knows damn well that her addiction to expensive clothes and accessories has to do with making up for a childhood where oftentimes she went without food and certainly never had nice things to wear. But the fact that she doesn’t try to hide it and calls it what it is was really refreshing. Angel is equally refreshing and knows he may never move on from the loss he suffered while serving his country. Along with the occasional heavy moments were plenty of laughs when Angel finds himself leading a group of young girls in a sort of scout group. Young girls…which he has no experience in. He had plenty of outdoors experience but none whatsoever with French braiding or girl bonding. Thankfully he’s got Taryn to help. Of course, that only strengthens their bond and moves things from the temporary status to the more permanent.   The ending to this story totally played out like a movie in my mind while I was reading it and I loved that!

Overall, if you’re looking for a no-nonsense romance with a few laughs along the way then get When We Met on your list. Thank you, Susan, for a fabulous read!

About Amie Nichols

AmieNicholsI live in Iowa with my amazing, supportive husband. He is my rock and my king, and treats me like all women should be treated. (Like a spoiled Queen.) I have two miniature dachshund’s that are my babies, and they love to keep me company when I am writing away on my next WIP.
I’m about to publish my 6th book, and can hardly believe how my life has changed. I’m called an author, and still can’t believe it. I’ve have met some amazing women in my journey so far, and have learned so much. (Sometimes the hard way.) I’ve been like a sponge soaking up all the information I can on how the publishing world works. It’s been a roller coaster ride so far with its ups and its downs.
No matter what, I will never regret anything I’ve done. You can’t succeed if you don’t try, and if you don’t try you won’t succeed. One of my favorite quotes is, “If the dream is big enough the facts don’t matter”.
Some other info about me: I love my family, friends, wine, and anything caffeinated. I also love writing HEA. For the same reason I won’t watch a movie that I know will make me cry, (with the exception of Steel Magnolias) I will never write a book without an HEA. There might be a few twists and turns, a cliffhanger or two, but ultimately my stories will leave you feeling warm and fuzzy inside. For me, reading is entertainment, a way to escape this crazy insane world. If a book leaves me feeling sad, mad or gut wrenched, it is not for me. There is enough gut-wrenching sadness in this world, I don’t need to read about it too.
I started writing 3 years ago, and have no plans on stopping. So keep your eye on me, because with the help of some amazing people, and my wonderful fans, this girl is going to be on the New York Times best selling list someday.

Excerpt:

Karl’s in the kitchen, making crepes. It amuses me how many of my friends are foodies and I manage to still ruin water when I attempt to boil pasta. “You mean, like hand-to-hand combat?”

I steal one of the broken crepes littering the counter next to the stove and shove it in my mouth. “Yesh.”

“I’m a Quake, Chloe, not a cage fighter.”

Rats. I guess—

“I have a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu,” Iolani says suddenly. She’s over at the refrigerator, pulling out a carton of grapefruit juice. She smiles winningly at Karl. “I am a Volcanic and a black belt. We ladies are quite badass, you know.”

Well now. This is quite convenient if I do say so myself. “Do you think you can show me some moves?”

“Let me check my schedule.” She pretends to pull a list out of her pocket. “Hmm . . . mm-hm. Yep.” The imaginary list is stuffed back in her jeans. “I suppose I have a little free time I can slot you into. But only a little, mind you. I’m quite busy down here.”

I toss one of the broken crepes at her; she giggles and easily dodges it.

“Yes, you’re so busy,” Karl drawls. “It must be so exhausting, watching all of your soap operas one after another. What will you do if you miss an episode? Will Joe ever tell Jane that he screwed her daughter? Will Bob ever let Mary know he had quintuplets with the nurse that woke him up from brain surgery?” A sly grin curves across his lips. “Inquiring minds must know!”

“It’s Marcel who cheated on Felicia with her daughter.” Iolani sticks out her tongue. “And Rudolpho and Estelle with the quintuplet problem. But my, my, Karl Graystone. Don’t you know these storylines just as well as I do? How very scandalous of you.”

I burst into laughter. “She’s got you there.”

He sighs, but he’s chuckling, too. “Moira is obsessed. It’s like osmosis. Even Em is more interested in watching them than her cartoons. And now Lani here is watching them day and night with the volume turned way up . . . it’s like I can’t escape.”

“I’ll tell you what, Graystone.” Iolani pulls a glass down from the cupboard and pours herself a drink. “How about you watch my eppies for me while I’m working with Chloe? That way, I can get all the deets from you and it will be like I haven’t missed a step.”

I crack up all over again at how he pretends to be so excited at this. “Can I? Really? We can debrief afterward!”

Iolani kisses her hand and pats her butt. “You know you want to know.”

“Whatever.” He turns to me. “Why the need to fight? You’re a Creator. I’m pretty sure you can best anyone without having to throw a punch.”

I hop up on the counter. “You’ve seen how the Elders tear me apart.”

Both eyebrows shoot up. “You want to physically fight Elders? Like . . . with your hands?” He shakes his head. “Chloe, I’ve been with you in several of those fights. You don’t need to land a punch. You have your bow, not to mention all you need to do is touch one and it’s gone.”
