Exquisite Danger by Ann Mayburn…Blog Tour Stop & Excerpts

~Synopsis~
Some people think my boyfriend, Smoke, is a total biker psycho, a natural born killer who will destroy anyone who threatens what he considers his. They wouldn’t be wrong, but he’s so much more than that. For the first time in my life I know what it’s like to be completely and truly adored by a man who loves me for exactly who I am, a high functioning autistic with more personality quirks than there are stars in the Texas Hill Country night sky. He’s the dark salvation I never dared hope for, my beloved fallen angel who is trying with all of his wicked heart to save me from what seems like an entire world bent on either killing me or a fate worse than death.

We’re headed to the Denver, Colorado chapter of the Iron Horse MC, chasing after my narcissistic, junkie mother who decided to steal from some very bad men leaving her two daughters behind to pay the price for her betrayal. My twin sister, Sarah, old lady to the Iron Horse MC president, is looking for my mother as well, but Sarah’s gone rogue and has no one to guard her back which worries me deeply. To further complicate matters, there are traitors in the Iron Horse MC who are working with my mother, not only helping her to escape but also informing my enemies of my every move.

The odds are stacked against me, but I will do whatever is necessary to protect those I love, and with Smoke at my side, I just might make it out of this mess alive.

(Naughty and Nice)
Nice
Resting my cheek on Smoke’s chest I absently stroked the sparse hair on his arms, humming to myself while I enjoyed my post orgasmic bliss. I felt so connected to him, so loved, and I was trying with all my might to avoid thinking about the day to come. The small, scared, dependent part of me my father had tried so hard to destroy wanted to spend the rest of the day hiding here with my man, but I knew Smoke would never allow that.
Sure enough, his muscles flexed beneath my cheek as he sighed. “Time to get up, sweetheart. We have a brunch we need to get to and a traitor to catch.”
His perfect, bronze skin gleamed in the sunlight, and I let out an appreciative sigh as he stood. He really was too fucking hot for his own good. “You think one of them is a spy?”
“The old ladies?”
“Yeah.” I walked into the bathroom to quickly wash the remains of our activities away with a brief shower. There was silence while I cleaned up, and by the time I came back, he was looking at his cell phone with a frown, busily typing something.
Whatever he was reading wasn’t making him happy if the anger coming off of him was any indication, and I tensed as well, my body reacting to his non-verbal language. I watched him begin to pace, and my pulse picked up, throwing off the lingering afterglow from good sex. The only time my man paced was when he was struggling to hold back some strong emotion, usually rage. Fear tried to worm its way further into my heart, but I concentrated instead on getting dressed
in a pair of cute jeans, with elaborate stitching on the back pockets, and a lovely orange and pink bra that matched my panties. When he growled, I turned my back and tried to apply my lip gloss with a shaking hand, before giving up and watching in the mirror as Smoke paced behind me.
When I’d first met him, I would have wanted to stop him from pacing, to try to calm him down, but now I knew him well enough to realize that this was his form of downloading. For Smoke, his ground-eating strides somehow soothed him, so I left him alone and slipped on my wrist cuffs, admiring the gleam of silver in the sunlight coming in through the partially opened shades and sheer, white curtains.A harsh sigh escaped him when he finally stilled and met my eyes in the mirror. “It’s not outside the realm of possibility that one of them may be a traitor.”
As soon as the word traitor left Smoke’s lips, memories of my father lecturing me on how traitors were the lowest of the low, the scum of the earth, raced through my mind. If there was a rat among the old ladies, I was gonna find her, fear of meeting new people or not. I would find a way to get through this and bring us a huge leap forward in my efforts to get this fucking hit off
my head, and bring Sarah home. With this in mind, I turned back to look Smoke in the eye and he grinned. With his words, the training from my dad kicked in, and I gave him a slow nod as my mind shifted from ‘Swan, the woman’ to ‘Swan, the battle-trained survivor’.“What do you want me to do?”“Easy, mama bear. I don’t need you clawin’ anyone’s face off.”

That brought me out of my cold space a little bit and I shrugged. “I’m going to do what has to
be done.”

Still smiling at me, he nodded, and the light caught the hints of amber in his eyes, turning
the irises to the color of melted chocolate. “I know you will. But for right now, just check them
out. The traitor could be acting independently of her old man as well, so if a woman seems real
unhappy with her man, she might be a suspect. Or if she seems really happy with everything, that
might trip your female ESP as well.”

“My female ESP?”

“Yeah, you know, that chick intuition shit. Look, we don’t have time to sit around and bullshit
right now. If we did I’d still be fuckin’ you instead of talkin’. Damn woman, I can’t seem to be
around you without wanting you beneath me.”

Heat rushed through me, and I squeezed my thighs together to try and stop the initial ache of
arousal. “Okay.”

My voice came out in a high-pitched squeak that made him chuckle. Not knowing what
the day would bring, I chose a loose, long-sleeved, pink, silky shirt with a tight, white tank
top beneath that, which was also a waist holster. As I got dressed, I waited for Smoke to come
molest me, but he remained on the bed and focused on whatever he was texting. A renewed
sense of purpose filled me, but there was also a growing sense of loss at being away from the
safety Smoke provided me. He was the only person here I trusted, and I wasn’t a big fan of being
in unfamiliar environments, even if he would be there with me.

“Baby, what’cha thinkin’ so hard about?”

Before I could stop the words, I said what I was really thinking. “I don’t want to be away
from you.”

He sighed and looked up, watching me as I hid a variety of weapons. The weary look left his
face and a slight smile curved his lips. “Make sure you don’t go through any metal detectors.”
Strapping a sheathed throwing knife to my forearm, I glanced up and raised my eyebrows.

“Ha. Ha.”

“I’ll be there, but you’ll be on your own with the women. If I hung out with you, it would be
totally out of character.”

I placed my handgun into its holster on my waist before securing it in place and tugging my
shirt down.

As I moved this way and that in the mirror to make sure the gun couldn’t be seen through the
tank and shirt, Smoke laughed. “Does that thing have a laser sight on it?”
“Of course. Never hurts to have that little bit of extra help, but I don’t use it much. If I relied
on it, I’d be a shitty shot at night.”
“Wouldn’t you worry that the laser would show them where you are?”
“Not really. When I shoot, I shoot to kill.”
“Baby, sometimes you scare me.”
“Ditto.”

Naughty
I was still lost in my own fantasy world when the door to my side of the truck was jerked open, and I was snatched out before I could tumble to the ground. Smoke ignored my shriek and grabbed a blanket from the backseat before carrying me over his shoulder to the back of the truck. He took the gate down, tossed the blanket onto the bed of the truck, then perched me on the blanket, all while speaking in Spanish to someone on the phone. Judging by his tone, it wasn’t a happy conversation, but he gazed at me with lust and not anger. He wasn’t pleased with whoever he was talking to, and it made his movements somewhat harsher than usual, more dominant.
I liked that.
He put his hand over the cellphone and said in a stern, no-bullshit voice, “Take your pants off and play with that sweet pussy for me. Fuck, the thought of being the first to do all these dirty things with you and knowing that I’m gonna be the only man you’ll ever have inside of you, makes me want to give your greedy body
every inch of cock it wants, and then some. I own that golden cunt.”
I moaned loudly, and arched my hips up at him, begging him to touch me as he seduced me with his raw words. I wanted to argue that I belonged only to myself, but that wasn’t true. Smoke owned a piece of me now, not just my libido but a bit of my heart and soul. I should’ve been freaked out, but I also realized I owned a part of him as well.
I looked into his dark eyes and studied his face, and found a dizzying amount of desire mixed with rougher, darker emotions. I deliberately made a great production of taking my clothes off, putting everything I’d learned while working at a strip club to good use. My moves were controlled, the dip of a shoulder to draw his gaze to my neck, a slight arch to my back that pushed my butt out.
His voice faltered for a moment then picked back up as he traced his fingers over my bottom. The tremble in his fingertips as he stroked me made me want to drive him crazy. This man loved me. It was evident in his every caress, his every glance, and his every territorial move. Smoke was one hundred percent alpha male, and his need to assert his dominance over me never failed to turn me on. He put his hand between my shoulder blades and pushed me down, then propped my butt up so I had to curve my spine to accommodate his silent demands.
Remembering what he wanted from me, I spread my legs the slightest bit and slowly ran my fingertip over the wet slit of my sex. Smoke went silent behind me for a long, long moment. When he spoke again, his voice had a rough edge to it that hadn’t been there before. I stared at the bed of the truck with unseeing eyes, my imagination painting vivid pictures of my man standing behind me, trying to concentrate on business while I tempted him with pleasure. The control that I had over Smoke with my body ramped my desire higher as I tried to entice him to touch me…taste me.I teased myself and him, swirling two of my fingers through my arousal before sinking them slowly inside of me. I startled when Smoke grabbed my hips, but it was only so he could arch me further and spread my legs wider, leaving nothing of my body hidden from him. He stroked the back of my thigh with one hand, his voice becoming nothing but a rumbling sound in my ears as I reveled in his attention. My fingers felt good inside of me, but his cock would feel so much better.
“Touch me,” I whispered.
Evidently I said it loud enough so that Smoke could hear me, because a second later he spanked my bottom hard enough to sting. I almost jerked my hand away from my pussy in surprise, but his hand cupped over mine. He moved my fingers inside of me, using my hand to touch my pussy the way he wanted me to. I gave myself over to him completely, my bite-bruised breasts crushed to the blanket and my ass feeling heated in the cool air.
When he was satisfied that I was playing with my sex as he’d silently instructed, he removed his hand for a moment and unzipped his pants to free his thick erection Then he ran his thumb near the entrance to my body, coating it with my arousal. I tensed when that thumb began to spread my natural lubricant up to my anus, but he just played with me, toying with my body until I was trying to get him to sink his thumb into my bottom. A naughty pleasure tightened my sex, and I groaned as he slowly breached my rear entrance with his thumb, which felt gigantic.I tensed, not sure if I liked this sensation. It was weird and uncomfortable and…ohhhh, God… Smoke was smacking my hand away so he could press his rock-hard shaft against my pussy. His thumb turned from a distraction to an erotic thrill as he slowly sank into me, now speaking in English. I had no idea what he was saying, too caught up in the press of his almost unbearably thick dick breaching me where I needed him the most. The feeling of coming together was bliss, and I moaned from deep in my chest. When he went to pull out, I squeezed my inner muscles and earned a rough, choking sound from Smoke, followed by a snarl directed at the person on the phone.
“Baby, bite down on that blanket,” he whispered to me. “I don’t want this dirty fucker Hustler listening to you. You get too loud and I’ll stop fuckin’ you.”
I managed to gather the blanket, and hoped it was clean as I bit down on it. Personally, I didn’t give a shit if Hustler heard me. I’d seen him getting a blowjob by a pretty, but world-weary woman. Hustler could kiss my ass about me making any noises. It felt good to moan my pleasure into the cloth, and I had no doubt that Smoke—he loved gagging me—was getting off on the sight. Evidently, I had a bit of an exhibitionist streak because the idea of Hustler on the phone getting turned on by our fucking made my pussy clench. Now, I’m not saying I’d touch Hustler, ever, but I wanted to do anything and everything, as long as I did it with Smoke. A decadent shiver went through me at the sheer naughtiness of what we were doing, and I began to rock back onto Smoke’s devastating cock, enjoying the slow burn as he stretched me.
He stood still and let me experiment, his thumb still playing with my bottom. My eyelids slowly closed, and I became lost in the nothingness, my entire being focused on what kind of sensations I could coax from my buzzing nerves while rocking my hips back into Smoke. Soon, I was making little, pained noises into the blanket. There was a place on the upper part of my pussy that felt really, really good when he stroked over it in a certain way. The ridge of the crest of his shaft was pressing into me just right, and I shuddered then grunted.
I barely moved a few inches with each roll of my hips, trying to move to maximize that wonderful, hard tingle I got with every short stroke. It almost felt like he was rubbing my clit from the inside. Another hard moan escaped me, muffled by the blanket, then both of Smoke’s hands gripped my hips hard enough that it sent bright sparks of pleasure/pain surging through me.
“You like that, my naughty girl? When my cock strokes you right…there?”
I cried out as he shoved roughly into me, pressing hard on that spot and making my whole body shiver and shake.
“Yeah, you like that.” His chuckle was that of a smug, self-satisfied male. “We’ll have to see if I can make you squirt for me sometime. But right now, I need to fuck you before anyone else calls me.”
With that he pulled all the way out until the bulbous head of his dick stretched the entrance to my sex, a cry of distress leaving my lips before I could stop it. He laughed again, but the sound turned into a growl as he began to fuck me, harsh thrusts that rocked the truck with his movements. One of his hands left my hip and wound into my hair, pulling back hard enough that I couldn’t help but scream out my pleasure.

~Author Bio~
Ann is Queen of the Castle to her wonderful husband and three sons in the mountains of  West Virginia. In her past lives she’s been an Import Broker, a Communications Specialist,   a US Navy Civilian Contractor, a Bartender/Waitress, and an actor at the Michigan   Renaissance Festival. She also spent a summer touring with the Grateful Dead-though she will deny to her children that it ever happened.
From a young age she’s been fascinated by myths and fairytales, and the romance that   often  was the center of the story. As Ann grew older and her hormones kicked in, she   discovered trashy romance novels. Great at first, but she soon grew tired of the endless   stories with a big wonderful emotional buildup to really short and crappy sex. Never a big fan of purple prose, throbbing spears of fleshy pleasure and wet honey pots make her giggle, she sought out books that gave the sex scenes in the story just as much detail and plot as everything else-without using cringe worthy euphemisms. This led her to the wonderful world of Erotic Romance, and she’s never looked back.
Now Ann spends her days trying to tune out cartoons playing in the background to get into her ‘sexy space’ and has learned to type one handed while soothing a cranky baby.

About HARD TO COME BY:

Caught between desire and loyalty…

Derek DiMarzio would do anything for the members of his disgraced Special Forces team—sacrifice his body, help a former teammate with a covert operation to restore their honor, and even go behind enemy lines. He just never expected to want the beautiful woman he found there.

When a sexy stranger asks questions about her brother, Emilie Garza is torn between loyalty to the brother she once idolized and fear of the war-changed man he’s become. Derek’s easy smile and quiet strength tempt Emilie to open up, igniting the desire between them and leading Derek to crave a woman he shouldn’t trust.

As the team’s investigation reveals how powerful their enemies are, Derek and Emilie must prove where their loyalties lie before hearts are broken and lives are lost. Because love is too hard to come by to let slip away…

My review:

Hard To Come By is the third book in author Laura Kaye’s Hard Ink Series, a series I have loved from the very beginning. While I love every character in this series, I have to say, Marz and this book are my absolute favorite in the series so far. There is something about this wounded warrior and his very unlikely love interest that pulled me in from the very first chapter and didn’t let go until the very last page. It was phenomenal!

(I do want to make note that I vote reading the series as a whole before digging into this book. The back story and plot are becoming more involved with each book and I would hate for you to miss something…it’s just too good!)

A team of former special forces operators has been working tirelessly on getting to the bottom of the mystery that got them all kicked out of the army and half of their team killed. It’s this situation that has led them to Emilie Garza’s front door.

Her brother was involved somehow in a drug smuggling mess that was plaguing their city and their lives. She had no idea, however. The team had to get to her and hopefully get some answers. This leads Emilie and Derek Marza to cross paths and set off an immediate, and somewhat forbidden, attraction. What started out as a play to get Emilie away from her house so some of the guys can check it out and see if it held any clues to her brother’s whereabouts, turned into a dinner date and opened up all sorts of feelings between Emilie and Derek. Talk about bad timing. Making matters worse was they the team did in fact find some things and they knew Emilie’s brother was a ticking time bomb and she wasn’t safe. Another date later, Derek was a jumble of emotions. Emilie was going to have to know the truth about her brother soon. And the truth about why she and Derek had met in the first place. How was Derek supposed to let her know he had been lying to her from the second they met? Would she ever forgive him? He had to tell her, and soon…because things with her brother and the other dangers were getting worse by the minute. Would she ever be able to overlook his lies? He really hoped so…she ended up becoming a bright spot in his life and he didn’t want to let her go.

Man. I loved this book. While the story line continues and grows with each book, each installment in the series primarily follows one couple. Derek (aka Marz) and Emilie are the main focus in this book and I loved them together from the word “go”.

On paper, they aren’t a good match. She is the sister of one of Marz’s current enemies. Never a good way to start out. But Marz being Marz, he always looks for the good in a situation and immediately finds it in Emilie. She isn’t involved with her brother’s indiscretions and he knows it with deep certainty. One of his best qualities is always looking at the silver lining. He’s one of the most memorable characters I’ve read and stands out in my mind thanks in part to his character and outlook on life. He’s loyal and smart. Never lets life get him down, despite having lost his leg in the battle that killed half of his former teammates. Always trying to lighten the mood and help carry his friend’s emotional burdens. He has a beautiful soul and he will always be a favorite of mine. Emilie is a perfect match for him. Deeply understanding and equally loyal, she stands up for what’s right even if it may hurt her brother and her family. She’s full of integrity and heart and doesn’t flinch when Marz shows her his physical weakness. They had fate on their side when they met, for sure.

As far as the rest of the story, there were three huge “WHOA” moments that I can’t give away but I will tell you that I cried when I read two and cheered for the third. The story took a turn I didn’t see coming and it’s one that I’m glad it did. There may be hope for redemption of these amazing soldiers in the eyes of the government and I couldn’t be happier! But my lips are sealed…

Laura has done it again with Hard To Come By. Packed with emotion, suspense, action, and well-developed characters, this book is the whole package. I cannot WAIT to continue on with this series and see where the Hard Ink gang is going to end up. Thank you, Laura, for a fantastic book!

Excerpt:

“Astrid…” He tried again. Yet his face moved toward hers until their lips met. His thigh pushed between her legs, pressing tight right where she wanted him to be. He tilted her face back and dragged his lips along the line of her jaw. “We shouldn’t…”

Just get in the shower with me, she instructed him in his mind.

He tilted his head to meet her gaze, appraising her offer. Something dark passed over his expression. “We would fall right into the gods’ plans.”

She leaned forward and teased his nipple with her tongue. “They are gods. We are not. Let’s face it, they’re going to win.” She glanced upward and thought to him, Don’t you want me?

“I always want you. Never doubt that.”

Excerpt 1:

“I’m not worried about tomorrow. I’m worried about right now, with you, under this Christmas tree.” Blake supported her neck as he laid her on the floor.

Livia turned her head. “You’d better convince me. So far you’ve talked about the dog going to the bathroom, trash, and dirtiness.”

Blake kissed her jaw and turned her head gently, kissing her mouth as she bit her lips together.

“Can’t I just convince you with my manly ways?” He wiggled his eyebrows.

He could, of course, do just that—but she shook her head. She loved the playful sparkle in his green eyes. His five o’clock shadow just made him more handsome, framing his kissable lips with scruff.

“Okay.” He put his fingers at the bottom of her shirt, lifting it gently so he could circle her belly button with his index finger. “You’re the sexiest, most beautiful woman on this planet. So sexy, in fact, that I had to have you. I had to make you bear my children because my universe and yours had to be combined. Everything I’ve ever been needed to be buried inside of you, so deep, so full of love that we created life. Twice.”

He lifted her shirt and kissed the tops of her breasts, whispering his devotion into her skin. “And it’s never enough. Unless I can hear you coming, I can’t think of anything else. All day every day. For years now. You’re that powerful, Livia. This. Us. It’s so intense that years haven’t cured me. I can’t stop wanting to make love to you.”

“Wow.” Livia smiled and pulled his face back to hers, kissing him and effectively stopping his beautiful words.

Excerpt 2:

“Come with me.” He led her to the beach again, but during dinner a few people had been busy. It was now lined with an aisle of candles, and a man stood close to the breaking surf, hands crossed, waiting. Someone had used the surrounding sand as a canvas, creating a swirling pattern. Their names were part of the art.

What? She asked without a sound.

“I want you to marry me. Here. Now.”

Beckett let go of her hand and strode away. When he turned around, close to the water at the end of the aisle, he hoped to hell she wasn’t running in the other direction.

Jones I Belong to You

I Belong To You Synopsis:

Master…

Being that person, that man is how I define myself, how I allow the rest of the world to define me as well. And now, with a terrible loss shredding me inside out and someone trying to destroy my family to punish me, control is more important than ever. It is everything. It is what I need. It is all I need. Or maybe I just need…her.

Handsome man

Excerpt from I Belong to You (Inside Out #5) by Lisa Renee Jones. Copyright 2014

I shut the door and then motion to the small, round conference table in the corner. “Let’s sit.” I’m irritated that I’m aware she’s wearing the same outfit she’d worn the first night I met her, several weeks ago.

She nods and moves with the same pace, the same confident steps, confirming that she is not my type. As she once said, we’re too alike, two bulls fighting for the same red flag. We come together at the edge of the seats, neither of us voluntarily claiming one first, standing toe to toe, our gazes locking.

A band seems to tug our bodies closer; I feel our shared connection in my chest and see it in the dilation of her soft blue eyes. The howl of memories is like a heavy wind that refuses to be ignored. I’d buried my pain over the news of a search for Rebecca’s body in Crystal’s body. I’d been weak, drunk, hurting. I’d tried to recover with a business-from-this-point-forward talk.

But when I’d walked Crystal, not Ms. Smith, to a private jet the next day, I’d needed to touch her, to taste her one last time—the “one last time” I’d never had with Rebecca. My weakened armor had dropped, and I’d pulled her to me and kissed the hell out of her.

And damn it to hell, I want to do that again.

But I won’t. Ms. Smith lifts her hand to touch me, the way I’ve often let her and no one else do, though I still don’t understand why. Then she seems to sense the change in me, pulling back before contact.

“How are you?” she asks.

The rasp in her voice edges down my nerve endings and evokes emotions that, on some level, I want to arouse in her, though all I should desire from any woman is passion and lust. Those needs are within the realms I have always controlled, so they are acceptable.

But I sense Ms. Smith wants more. And what I want from her is more—which infuriates me.

“How am I?” My words are as tight as my spine. “Ready to get back to normal. Sit.”

Her brow furrows in silence at the command, a prelude to the many battles I suspect are before us, but she claims her seat, as I do mine. Setting my briefcase on a chair, I pull out a document and set it in front of me, intentionally building her expectation as to what it might be.

And I think she knows that, since she refuses to look at it. I narrow my stare on hers, wondering if there’s more behind her iron will than growing up in a rich family with dominant men. And in doing so, I see the slightest hint of discomfort in the depths of her eyes, the weakness I’m looking for to push her well beyond her comfort zone.

“I have the answer to my first question,” I state. “Clearly, we still want to fuck.”

Her lips part in surprise, then a look of incredulity slides over her delicate features as a disgusted sound slips from her lips. “Funny. I thought your first question would be ‘How’s my mother?’ Or ‘How’s my father?’ Or ‘How is the staff, after they’ve taken a beating from the press and customers pounding them with questions?’ ”

“We’ve had that conversation three times in four days, including last night. I trust you. That’s the point.”

“No. The point seems to be us wanting to fuck again.”

My lips quirk at her bold statement. “I’ll take your lack of denial as confirmation you agree. And us wanting to fuck has everything to do with us working together on a day-to-day basis, Ms. Smith.”

“Crystal,” she amends. “You know ‘Ms. Smith’ bothers me, since long before we got naked together. Not even the staff calls me that.”

“Formality is how I manage and how I operate. It’s not a slap. It’s not a reflection on us getting naked together. I simply cannot maintain structure with the staff by treating you differently, nor would we be able to avoid questions.”

She inhales and lets it out. “Point taken, Mr. Compton.”

“Thank you, Ms. Smith.” I pause for effect. “My plan is to be by my mother’s side as much as possible, and leave you with your present duties if you’re agreeable. I’ll simply help you navigate the ship in the more treacherous waters.”

She nods. “I have a list of powerful clients and prospective clients who represent large dollar figures, and it’s taking time to earn the trust that you’d have in one phone call. So I need backup.”

“You have it.” I lean back and study her a moment. “You treat this company and my family as your own.”

“Is that a question?”

“No. I’m just trying to figure out why you’re doing it for us, since your own family owns one of the largest tech companies on the planet. That’s a lot to walk away from.”

“You did the same: Riptide is one of the largest auction houses in the world. And, like I told you, my father and brothers are very controlling, much like you. In fact, I’d say they are equally overbearing.”

I arch a brow, amused at her boldness.

“You think I’m overbearing.”

“You take pride in being overbearing.” I incline my head. “It works for me. But my mother wrote the book on overbearing—yet here you are.”

“It’s different. She isn’t them.”

“But I am?”

“You’re arrogant, intolerably bossy, often rude, and infuriating, but—you’re my boss, not my family. And I’ll point out that you chose to open your gallery across the country, despite being emotionally close to your parents.”

“Birds of a feather,” I say.

“But there’s more to your story.”

“There’s more to yours.”

I lean in closer, lowering my voice to a soft rasp. “I never take what isn’t given to me freely, Ms. Smith.”

She smiles. “Nor do I, Mr. Compton.”

The unexpected reply curls my lips. “You are nothing that I expect.”

“Because you never expect anyone to be like you. Two birds of a feather. Remember?”

“I’m fairly certain you won’t let me forget.” We’re close, a mere lean-in from a kiss, one I crave more each moment I’m with her.

I lean back before I forget my agenda. “Whatever the rest of your story is, when I look into your eyes I see honesty and sincerity, qualities I value more than ever. Qualities I owe you in return. That means giving you a clear understanding of who and what I am—because the past few weeks have not been an example of those things.”

Her gaze lowers and she says softly, “I know I’m a gateway to a place you’re using to cope with . . . things.” Then she looks at me. “Maybe I even am that place. You’ve just lost someone important to you. You fear losing your mother to cancer. So anything you feel with me is about them, not me. Sex is an escape for you.

“And it is for me, too. It’s how I’ve handled the emotion all of this creates in me. So I don’t need or want your guilt. We’re clear on everything.”

But we’re not; the muddied water we’re traveling is dangerous. Worse, she makes me want to believe we can continue. But she brings out a part of me I don’t want to exist; if I let it, I will deserve the guilt.

“If we’re clear up to this point,” I reply, sliding the contract across the table, “then you understand why it’s so important that we’re equally clear on what our relationship is or isn’t going forward.”

Her eyes hold mine and she swallows hard, before her gaze drops to the contract. She stares at the first line, “Master and Submissive Contract,” for two beats and then calmly hands it back to me. “I told you. I will never be your submissive.”

Excerpt:

His hand closes over mine, and I tremble with anticipation. I draw my hand away, then close my eyes, more than willing to let him undress me.

Except he doesn’t.

I stand for a moment, confused and disoriented, then open my eyes to find him looking at me. I see the desire on his face, as vibrant and wild as my own need. And yet he makes no move to touch me again. On the contrary, he takes a single step back, his eyes never leaving mine.

He is denying us both, and that simple fact both pisses me off and turns me on.

I gather self-control around me like a cloak, then lift an eyebrow. “Playing games, Mr. Stark?”

“Absolutely,” he says with a wicked grin. “And just in case you’ve forgotten, I don’t play if I can’t win.”

“Really?” I say, enjoying myself. “And what’s the prize?”

He steps closer, still not touching me, but so close that I can hear my own heartbeat echoing against the hard breadth of his chest. “You are.”

My heart flutters in my chest. Even now—even married—he makes me feel as deliciously alive as I did the first time he touched me. “In that case,” I whisper, the words thick with the weight of truth, “you’ve already won.”

Baby, It’s Cold Outside by Jennifer Probst, Emma Chase, Kristen Proby, Melody Anne & Kate Meader…Blog Tour Stop & Review

BICO RE Tour Banner

BabyCover

New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling indie authors Jennifer Probst, Emma Chase, Kristen Proby, Melody Anne, and debut author Kate Meader come together to write a sizzling romance anthology.

Outside it may be frosty, so turn the heat way up with these stories of desire!

Can a determined woman executive and a playboy billionaire survive being stranded together in a snowstorm? Jennifer Probst depicts an encounter almost too hot to handle…

My review:

Being a huge fan of Jennifer Probst, I was thrilled to see her in this anthology. In true Jennifer fashion, this story was full of romance and heat. The backstory between the two main characters really dictated the speed of how things heated up between them and I couldn’t have been happier with how it did! They had known each other through college and had been fighting the passion between them for years. They haven’t seen each other for ten years and now they’ve been set up on a blind date with each other. Of course neither one believes they could be the perfect match but fate had a different idea and soon they realize the fiery passion that had ignited years earlier had continued to burn. Add being stuck inside with a snowstorm raging outside and they have no choice but to act on all that attraction. A delicious story with two amazing characters makes this yet another fabulous story from Ms. Probst!

Drew and Kate play an encore to Tangled in this sexy take on a “Christmas Carol” by Emma Chase. When a Christmas Eve argument condemns Drew to a troubled night, three dream women teach him that no gift could be more tantalizing than Kate…

My review:

Two words: Drew Evans. I mean can Emma Chase write a bad story? Nope! I have loved her writing since the very first time we met Drew in Tangled and always love reading more of him and Kate. This was no exception. With his signature snark and sex appeal, Drew wins again in this new take on A Christmas Carol. Drew may have lost site of what’s important to him and his family, but with three visits on Christmas Eve, he is reminded pretty quickly that Kate and James are what matter most. Of course there’s also plenty of heat in this tale and it made me love it even more. Emma, you are amazing and with one of the freshest voices out there, I will continue to look forward to your work!

With Kristen Proby, ski slopes are quite delightful. Grace Douglas is sure she’ll never learn to ski, but instructor Jacob Baxter could teach her lessons of a different kind…

 My review:

Well, hello sexy ski instructor. This story was really charming and smoking hot! Grace is funny and beyond clumsy, which only adds to her charm. She has the ability to laugh at life and not take things too seriously, which makes for the ease of a weekend fling with her hot ski instructor quite manageable. Speaking of the sexy ski instructor, Jacob is quite the package. He’s smart, sexy, athletic, and knows how to please a gal. But he isn’t a player…quite the opposite, in fact. Together they are smoking hot and I really enjoyed their story!

Can a southern California transplant survive Montana’s deep snows? Melody Anne, author of the bestselling Andersons series, melts the icy drifts completely away with the heat between sexy Hawk Winchester and brand-new teacher Natalie Duncan…

 My review:

This is the first of author Melody Anne’s work that I have read and after this, I can say I’m a fan! The new teacher in Small Town, USA meets up with one of the most eligible bachelors and the heat between them is undeniable. Hawk Winchester is sex on a brooding stick and it doesn’t hurt that he’s the town’s fire chief and volunteers with the school. I mean, does it get any better? Natalie is a strong gal and has many goals she wants to achieve before settling down and rightfully so. She had a pretty rough childhood and vows never to be put into that situation again. Fortunately for her, Hawk is the kind of guy to make sure she is always safe and taken care of.   Oh, and the ending of this story? Totally movie worthy and I loved it!

What could be hotter than a firefighter? Kate Meader shows how hot it can get as Beck Rivera and heiress-turned-tattoo-artist Darcy Cochrane discover that nothing ignites holiday flames like rekindling a lost love…

My review:

Oh, my. This story by author Kate Meader totally blew me away. For being a novella, there was the prefect amount of heat and emotion packed into these pages and I loved every second of it. Darcy Cochrane had her heart crushed years earlier when her boyfriend dumped her and told her he wasn’t good enough for her or her wealthy family. She understood where he was coming from, he was a street kid adopted by a good family but still had plenty of issues and was trying to learn to stay out of trouble. But no matter what, he would always be a blue-collar guy, going into firefighting and certainly not good enough for the upper class she came from. So he thought. It was that breakup that lead Darcy on the path to become the woman she was today. A successful tattoo artist, who had travelled the world. Of course that went against all that her family wanted her to be. Feeling she never belonged in that life anyway, she didn’t care one bit. What she did care about were the feelings her ex ignited within her when she sees him while back in town. He was even sexier than he was back then and lord help her, she was in so much trouble when it came to him. Can they recapture the passion they had when they were younger? Could she make him understand she never cared what his background was? This story was off the charts sexy and hot. I loved the backstory between the characters and how it affected their current situation. It was completely fantastic and also this novella had an ending that was totally movie worthy!

Don't hurt me

Cam’s POV

“You know, since we’re on the subject,” I began, raising my eyebrows at her, “do you maybe want to invite me in?”

She shook her head at me as she chuckled a bit. “Do you ever think of anything else besides sex?” She started walking to her door and I followed her.

“No, not really,” I said, shrugging my shoulders. “It doesn’t help that I’ve done nothing but think about you for the past two weeks.” She grinned timidly over her shoulder at me as she unlocked the door. Leaning forward I swiped the hair off of the back of her neck as I softly said the next part in her ear, “Your sexy body, the way you cried out my name, and the look on your face when you came all over me, is all I’ve been able to see.” Her face flushed with color. “You’ve got my balls cussin’, firecracker, and there is only one thing that is going to make them stop.”

Spinning her around swiftly, I pressed my mouth to hers, kissing her hard. She moaned into my mouth and I lost it. That sound shot straight to my dick, making it rise with complete attention. We needed to get inside before I took her right here on the front porch. Reaching behind her, I found the door knob and opened it. I picked her up, walked inside, and kicked the door shut behind us.

As badly as I wanted to make it to the bedroom, it wasn’t going to happen. She was pulling at my clothes, unbuttoning my shirt, and kicking her shoes off while she was still in my arms. Laying her down on the couch I climbed over her. Moving down my shirt, she continued her assault on the buttons—one by one, her fingers brushed against my skin, leaving a wake of warmth in their path.

Once she had it open, she pushed it over my shoulders and slid her hands over my chest as she made her way to my pants. Her touch was impulsive and desperate, like she craved me as much as I did her. I grabbed her wrists and pinned them above her head. Burying my face in her neck, I kissed and nibbled on her earlobe and she let out an inviting giggle. I continued down her throat and goose bumps broke out all over her skin.

Thrusting her hips upward, she tried to make contact but I denied her and pulled back. She whined a little and I couldn’t help but laugh—I loved making her squirm. And tonight, she was going to squirm until she begged me to fuck her.

Excerpt:

A convoy of three dented and mud-spattered SUVs roared up the forest track and jerked to a halt at a clearing overlooking the valley they had just left. A thickset, clumsy man in his late fifties climbed out of the middle vehicle breathing heavily. He peered through the thick pebble glasses perched on a large bulbous nose, scouring the track along which they had just travelled. He grunted in approval. No one was following. Meanwhile, the three vehicles edged forward until they were hidden from sight under a clump of pine trees. One of the drivers emerged with a pair of large army binoculars and handed them deferentially to the older man. He held them in front of his glasses before awkwardly removing them and then adjusted both lenses of the binoculars. First, he raised them to search the clear blue skies above and then lowered the binoculars to examine a village set in the valley below among a patchwork of irrigated fields. Families were out in the fields scything the autumn wheat harvest and bundling the stalks ready for threshing. Then he turned the binoculars to examine a large compound dominated by a domed white mosque. It lay a few miles to the west of the village and was surrounded by a high wall which formed a rough rectangle. At the corners were small guard platforms.

It was still mid-morning and a stiff breeze was pushing a bank of clouds from the west. The group of watchers waited in expectant silence. After twenty minutes, the wind brought the wailing sound of a call to prayers. Then almost a minute later, they heard a faint sound of a small motor engine and the watchers tilted their heads upwards, searching the sky for the source of the sound. There was nothing visible. Then, as the call to prayers ended, they saw streaks from two small silver missiles targeting the compound. Seconds later, the sound of two blasts echoed across the valley. The explosions created a cloud of dust and debris as the mud brick buildings shattered. The cloud swiftly rose into the air and then the debris fell as quickly. The mosqu4e seemed to have survived intact. Then they could hear a new sound, a steady whop-whop from helicopters. A group of six Cobra attack helicopters appeared and within minutes they could hear the intermittent sound of the machine-gun fire.

‘Pakistani soldiers,’ whispered one of the men watching. The older man nodded.

‘Allah has shown his mercy to you. Blessed is the name of the Prophet,’ the younger man said sounding excited. ‘They were coming for you but they failed again.’

Al-Zawahiri shook his head slowly. He did not share his followers’ enthusiasm. Instead he felt a familiar intense anger begin to burn inside. The Americans had somehow been tracking him and only a messenger carrying an urgent warning to flee had saved them. He had no known whether to trust the Pakistani or not. The Pakistanis had helped him escape their own attack but next time he might not escape in time. Another hour and the messenger would have arrived too late.

From the compound there was a hesitant and sporadic return of fire. Three of the helicopters lying low over the fields began strafing the walls of the compound. In the fields the farmers and their families stood and stared. A few figures began running back to their houses, while out of the compound, youths dressed in white robes and skull caps ran out and fled towards the village. In the seminary, another scattered group of men armed with a collection of guns and old rifles began firing wildly.

Within minutes, soldiers in dark olive and khaki combat gear were climbing down ladders and dropped from the three helicopters as they hovered above the fields outside the seminary. Soon the troops began running towards the mosque. A pick-up truck and a minibus which tore out of the gates on to the road leading to the village were strafed by gunfire from other helicopters hovering just above the compound. Men piled out of the jeep moments before it exploded. The watchers could see more soldiers rappelling down from the helicopters into the compound. Three minutes later, the rhythmic bursts of gunfire suddenly stopped. The helicopter’s wings stopped rotating. It seemed that resistance within the compound had ceased.

Al-Zawahiri slowly lifted the binoculars away from his eyes. Tears blinded his eyes and he let them trickle into his thick white beard. He murmured some instructions to the driver beside him. He went to the SUV hidden under the trees and returned carrying carpets which he laid down. The other members of the convoy joined the older man and the driver in kneeling down on the carpets prostrating themselves towards Mecca. The elderly Egyptian then sat up and began addressing the group. They listened in reverential silence awaiting his guidance. He spoke clearly and slowly. First he offered thanks for their deliverance and then he spoke of revenge.

‘If we get martyrdom, so we achieve that we were looking for, for the flag of Jihad will never fall down until the Day of Judgment as we were informed by the prophet of Allah (peach and blessings be upon him). Oh brothers, if we die, we meet with our beloved ones, because the gardens of my Lord are prepared for us, and its birds flap their wings around us. So they await us in the eternal residence. Verily, Allah has chosen us for his call. Brothers, go ahead and don’t look back, your path has been covered in blood. By the divine mercy of Allah, I call on the prophet thrice blessed be his name, to recognize the sacrifice of these martyrs. They are enjoying their reward in paradise but we here who have been saved must now prepare their revenge. By this hand, I swear that Satan’s attack against a school, a place of holy learning will be avenged. These invaders will regret what they have done and will curse themselves for the use of these drones. We will turn them against our enemies and see them weep over the destruction wrought on the children they claim to be protecting. Before the next Eid we will see them weep tears of blood at their folly. We will find a school and turn the sword of our enemies against their own bodies.’ Then he stopped and raised his hand and brought it down in a savage chop.

Praise from readers for Jack Maclean

“At times I wondered if the book wasn’t nonfiction. The story was fast paced, action filled with a mysterious side and real life characters. The ending is not to be missed. Look forward to seeing more from Mr MacLean in the future.” – Irene McIntosh

“The ending unbelievable. I gave it 5 stars but I wish I could give it more. I highly recommend it to all. I hope to read more from Jack MacLean. This is a fabulous read.” –Marjorie Boyd-Springer

“Frightening book as it mirror what is going on in the World at the present time. Jihadists are a real threat to the Western Civilisation. The book was a gripping story involving ordinary people in a situation they could neither understand nor control.” –P Moren
