BEAUTY AND THE BOSS by Diane Alberts

November 16, 2015

Modern Fairytale / Entangled Publishing: Indulgence

Book Summary:

Beauty is about to tame her beast…

Researcher Maggie Donovan has no luck with men, and it doesn’t help that she can’t keep her eyes off of her sexy boss – the one everyone else in the office calls The Beast. Relationships in the office are forbidden. So no one is more surprised than Maggie when she pretends to be his fiancée to save him during a difficult situation. Not only has she put her job on the line, but the future of the company.

Billionaire Benjamin Gale III doesn’t believe in love or romance, but the look on his mother’s face when Maggie tells her that she’s his fiancée is worth millions. Instead of firing her for her insubordination, he goes along with the ruse. In his arms-and in his bed-she’d be everything he could ever want…which is why he can’t have her.

But if he doesn’t let her go, they’ll lose everything…

EXCERPT

He crossed his arms and watched her through his lowered lids. Her white button-up shirt strained over her generous breasts, and her black pencil skirt hugged the curve of her hips. It was prim and proper office attire, and yet she somehow managed to make it look drop-dead-sexy without even trying. It was fucking ridiculous. “If it makes you uncomfortable, please don’t hesitate to say no. I won’t be insulted.”

“It doesn’t make me uncomfortable at all,” she said softly, her head tilted. He loved how she stared him straight in the eye and didn’t cower away from him like the rest of the staff, and how the smile never faded from her lips. “I just didn’t want to create the wrong impression, is all. I mean, we’re alone, and if we’re eating, if might look like a…well, you know.”

“A date?”

“Yes. That.” She pointed at him as if he’d given her the correct answer in a game show. He half expected her to announce that he’d moved on to the next round. “People might get the wrong idea.”

He lifted a hand and encompassed the empty office. “Yes, clearly gossip would be an issue.”

“Okay.” She glanced around, and one side of her mouth quirked up higher than the other. “You got me there. Eggplant parm, huh?”

“Yep.” He stepped back and gestured her inside his office. “And wine, too, if you’re feeling adventurous.”

“I’m not done with the report yet,” she said quickly, her cheeks flushing to a fetching pink as she headed toward him, smoothing her skirt. “I’ll have to return to work after I eat.”

“Leave it.”

She blinked. “But—”

“I said, leave it.” He left the door open, just in case someone happened to come in after hours. When she stood at the table awkwardly, he pulled a chair out, and watched her. She sat down, and he pushed her in closer to the table. She let out a little gasp and clutched the edge of her seat. “It’ll wait till Monday,” he said.

“Maybe I can take it home with me and work on it over the weekend,” she said, placing a white linen napkin on her lap with a perfectly manicured hand. “It’s not my style to just leave things undone.”

“Mine either.” He sat down and lifted the cover from her dinner plate. After setting it down, he picked up the bottle of Clos Du Val pinot noir, and leaned in. Her nose was inches from his, and she watched him with wide eyes. He had the undeniable urge to lean in even more and capture her mouth with his. Of course, he didn’t, but still. The impulse was there. “So let’s be rebellious together, Maggie.”

Review:

Full disclosure: I love holiday romances. It’s all I read beginning Thanksgiving weekend and all the way through to the New Year. It’s a thing with me. Elyse Douglas’s The Christmas Bridge upped my timeline a bit, but it still put me in the spirit despite what the calendar said.

The Christmas Bridge has many of the things I love about holiday romances. Second chance at love. New York City setting (though I also love a mountain/ranch setting, too). Buddy the Elf – no, I’m kidding!

Olivia is a widow and looking for a second chance at love with a man she met while attending art school. She takes a chance and contacts him when she has an opportunity to go to New York City. They have some unfinished business after Olivia left him for another man because of an unplanned pregnancy. But her life takes yet another unexpected turn when she meets a man on the same bridge in Central Park where 20 years earlier she met the old boyfriend.

Olivia is a heroine I can relate to in that she’s mature. She’s learned from past mistakes and doesn’t let things that have happened in the past frighten her into not trying to find love again. With her life in perspective, Olivia is free to make decisions that feel right to her. A twist toward the end helps her sharpen that perspective even more.

Now throw in a little Christmas magic when things look hopeless and The Christmas Bridge fits in nicely as a heartwarming holiday read.

Positive by David Wellington…Blog Tour & Review

Title: Positive
Author: David Wellington
Release Date: April 21, 2015
Publisher: Harper Voyager
Genre: Thriller/Suspense
Format: Ebook/Hardcover/Paperback/Audible

In the bestselling vein of Guillermo Del Toro and Justin Cronin, the acclaimed author of Chimera and The Hydra Protocol delivers his spectacular breakout novel—an entertaining page-turning zombie epic that is sure to become a classic. Anyone can be positive . . .

The tattooed plus sign on Finnegan’s hand marks him as a Positive. At any time, the zombie virus could explode in his body, turning him from a rational human into a ravenous monster. His only chance of a normal life is to survive the last two years of the potential incubation period. If he reaches his twenty-first birthday without an incident, he’ll be cleared.

Until then, Finn must go to a special facility for positives, segregated from society to keep the healthy population safe. But when the military caravan transporting him is attacked, Finn becomes separated. To make it to safety, he must embark on a perilous cross-country journey across an America transformed—a dark and dangerous land populated with heroes, villains, madmen, and hordes of zombies. And though the zombies are everywhere, Finn discovers that the real danger may be his fellow humans.

Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome meets World War Z and I Am Legend in this thrilling tale that has it all: a compelling story, great characters, and explosive action, making Positive the ultimate zombie novel of our time.

review

Anyone who knows me, knows that I will read just about anything that grabs from the blurb and cover. Positive was one of those and I was thankful to be given an arc of this book.

Positive is a post-apocalyptic book. Twenty years after the virus and zombies took over the world. Two generations left in the world – 1st generation (those who were able to live through it all) and 2nd generation (those who born after it and expected to continue on).

We follow Finn through his journey once he is kicked out of his area and was to be sent to a medical camp. Only that doesn’t happen and he is forced to figure out the world as he never knew and how to survive it.

I enjoyed reading about Finn’s journey and everything that he and his “band of misfits” are forced upon after some unsettling instances. However, at times I felt the writing was too mundane and dragged on a bit. But overall, it showed how the characters progressed and survived everything they came upon.

Do not expect a whole lot of zombie appearances but there are some. This book is more about the perseverance of a young boy thriving through the most difficult times. While the character development was lacking a bit, you still grasp what they writer is trying to portray. You will still find yourself turning pages and wondering what happens next.

It was good story. I look forward to reading more from this author in the future.

Charlotte’s Story by Laura Benedict…Blog Tour Stop & Review

Charlotte's Story COVERAbout Charlotte’s Story

Hardcover: 320 pages
Publisher: Pegasus (October 15, 2015)

The fall of 1957 was a seemingly idyllic, even prosperous, time down in southern Virginia. A young housewife, Charlotte Bliss, lives with her husband, Press Bliss, and their two young children, Eva Grace and Michael, in the gorgeous Bliss family home. On the surface, theirs seems a calm, picturesque life, but soon tragedy befalls them: four deaths, with seemingly simple explanations.

But nothing is simple if Bliss House is involved.

Charlotte, nearly crippled with grief, feels more and more isolated from everyone around her. The only thing that brings her solace is going through the old photos and curiosities left behind by her mother-in-law. Then she makes a startling discovery that points not to tragedy, but to murder. How far will Charlotte go to discover the truth? And how far will she get without knowing who her real enemy is?

Not for the faint of heart, or those disturbed by sexual situations and violence, Charlotte’s Story injects new levels of horror into the classic Southern gothic.

Praise for Charlotte’s Story

Expertly paced revelations help build a sense of encroaching horror. A satisfyingly creepy tale for a rainy night. – Publishers Weekly

An evocative, frightening and flawless gothic, Charlotteís Story is guaranteed to send a delicious chill down your spine. Nobody does more for the modern southern gothic than Laura Benedict. – J.T. Ellison, New York Times bestselling author of What Lies Behind

Laura Benedict spins an ever-shifting web of shadow and light. A thrilling read. Benedict writes with passion and authority. Charlotte’s Story is not to be missed. – Carolyn Haines, author of the Sarah Booth Delaney mysteries, and†The Seeker

My Review:

Charlotte’s Story is the newest work in the Bliss House Novels from author Laura Benedict and the first of her work that I’ve read. I’m a huge fan of watching horror and had wandered a bit in reading it over the last few years.  Well, this book certainly brought me right back into the genre.  It was creepy, emotional, and damn good!

From the very beginning I was invested in Charlotte’s character.  I was so sad as she experienced a loss no parent should ever have to bear.  Then as things slowly started to turn in Bliss House, I became worried for her safety and if she would be able to handle all of the strange and intense things going on…mentally and emotionally.  I was kept on the edge of my seat wanting to know what was going on, why she was being shown the unexplainable things she was being shown…especially from her dead mother in law.  But as the pieces started to fit together, I now became scared for Charlotte’s safety.  Talk about one hell of an ending! Ms. Benedict did such a stellar job at dropping subtle hints throughout the story that, when they fell into place at the very end, I was stunned. Talk about a “whoa” moment! We were also set up for the next novel, which I have to say, I am really intrigued about…and am now worried once again for Charlotte’s safety….and her son’s.

Overall, if you’re looking for a creepy and intriguing read, this is a must on your list!  Thank you, Ms. Benedict, for a phenomenal story.

Rage by Elizabeth Reyes…Blog Tour & Review

rageAbout RAGE

Having made it to the major leagues, AJ “Rage” Romero is determined to shake the stigma his temper has earned him over the years. He’s finally managed a shaky hold of that elusive self-control.

Until he meets them . . .

Without warning, his coach and mentor’s brilliantly gifted granddaughter Clair and her equally amazing mother Addison Lara blow into AJ’s life. The harder he falls for Addison, the closer and more attached he becomes to Clair.

Having fallen so fast and hard, he agrees to respect the understandably protective single mother’s wish to forever keep the identity of Clair’s absent father unknown to everyone—including AJ.

But when the ugly truth about Clair’s dad begins to surface, the fire in AJ’s fiercely possessive heart is lit. As more of the troubling reality comes to light, his zero tolerance for secrets and dishonesty put his temper—and his love for Addison—to the ultimate test.

Self-control has never felt so impossible.

review

I love Rage (AJ) and this book. This is probably my favorite book in this series so far.

Rage is slightly different than the rest of the books in this series in that in really focuses more on the love of a child and his AJ’s ability to form a strong bond with her regardless of what his peers think of him.

AJ (Rage) is a major league baseball player and earned the nickname Rage because of his extreme outbursts and inability to keep himself in check (on or off the field). However, he has learned to control and focus that energy in a more positive way thanks to his coach, Mr. Lara.

Addison is coach Lara’s daughter and her daughter, Clair, is a huge baseball fanatic and smart beyond her years. She also has the same love of stats as her mom, so she is always going with her grandfather to all of the games. She also happens to be AJ’s biggest fan and these two form one hell of a bond.

Due to the closeness of not only Clair and AJ, but also the way AJ looks up to coach Lara, it’s inevitable that AJ and Addison would eventually meet. Their first interaction isn’t one that I would say went smoothly either. But as time moves on, things become better and also get more complicated, for many, many reasons.

I won’t give any more of the plot away. This book is full love, devotion, heartache, deceit and determination. You will feel everything that both AJ and Addison feel. You will understand AJ’s rage and you can totally picture him when he is flying off the handle, regardless if you agree with him or not. You can sense Addison’s apprehension to a certain point, only because we don’t know exactly what all she has going on.

AJ and Addison will both infuriate you and also make you want to root for them. These two are very passionate people and they do no hold back anything. Elizabeth does an amazing job of writing two extremely strong characters. Yes, they have their flaws, but that’s what makes them so much more real and honest.

As I said earlier, this is probably my favorite book in this series. I cried, laughed, rooted on fights, and even felt like punching things all while reading this book. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story. I love when I feel so much in one book.

Another highly recommended book by Elizabeth Reyes!!

Poughkeepsie Begins by Debra Anastasia….Blog Tour Stop & Review (plus a fun freebie!)

PoughBeginsFront

Summary:

It ends with the beginning. This legendary, indie, cult-favorite series ends its tale with the story of the Poughkeepsie  brotherhood before the tattoo. Before the train station, before the church, before a criminal empire there was a foster home and three teen boys who chose each other as family, because the ones they were born into didn’t existStill in high school, Beckett is already laying the groundwork for a grander life ahead, one where his brothers want for nothing and get some respect for once. But even as he plans, Beckett must decide if he’s ready to make that choice—diving in to a life that trades his chance at a future, his chance at something as simple as first love with a girl named Candy Cox, for their chance to find happiness.

Blake, Beckett, and Cole’s devotion to each other is forged by fists and the driving need to belong somewhere, to do more than just survive this life. Readers of the series know they each get there in the end, but before we count smiles, we must first shed tears. These early days of the Poughkeepsie brotherhood will play on your heartstrings before serrating them with a knife; they’ll lift your soul with music, only to leave you with nothing but a desperate prayer for hope.

And when you reach the end of the beginning, you’ll be ready to start the series all over again.

My Review:

Note: Have a box of tissues nearby when you read this book (trust me) and also, while it totally can be read as a standalone, I loved this entire series and highly recommend reading all of it!

Poughkeepsie Begins is the final chapter in the Poughkeepsie series by Debra Anastasia.  I have some serious love for this series, and these characters….so much so that I got that tattoo, and while I am beyond sad to see this series end, I loved every second of  this story and was so happy to see how it all began for this unlikely band of brothers.

To say this was an emotional book would be a gross understatement.  I knew when I first read the series as a whole that the events leading up to how close these three foster brothers would eventually become had to be gut wrenching.  And it was.  But it was also beautiful and a reminder that no matter what, love can win.  To read the younger versions of the men from this series was so wonderful.  To read a young and headstrong Beckett, a hurt and emotional Blake, and a quiet and damaged Cole was beyond anything I had imagined.  It was touching and heartbreaking all at the same time.  To read their bond becoming something solid and the only good thing in these young men’s lives they can rely on was truly something special. Being able to learn how so many of the little habits that show up on the rest of the series was just so awesome, too.  The special handshake being one and the infamous and iconic tattoo being the other both of which I was so elated to read.  In a way, this book was like the very end credits of the last Twilight movie…a look back at where it all started and how far it’s come.  Poughkeepsie will forever hold a special place in my heart…always.

I also loved reading the moments with their two young foster sisters.  These moments showed just how big the hearts of Beckett, Blake, and Cole were…even back then when they were practically kids themselves.

Thank you, Debra, for giving us Blake, Beckett, and Cole.  I will forever be thankful.

 Excerpt:

When she ducked under the bleachers, he was a dick, right off the bat. His buzz was wearing off, but he was still high and broken at the closeness of her. “You’re missing your boyfriend during his lawn ballet.” He assumed a stance—douche mixed with confrontational—that he knew stopped people. It set up his walls real nice. With everyone.
Everyone but her. She walked right up to him. She pushed him hard once, twice, until his back hit one of the supports. And then she slapped him.
He took the slap and rolled his eyes. “That all you got for me, pink princess?”
And then she was kissing him. Oh, God. Kissing him and palming him with the same ferociousness he felt. He grabbed the metal behind him to keep from attacking her and nailing her right on the concrete floor littered with cigarettes and chip bags.
She pulled away and slapped him again, growling, “Fuck you, Beckett Taylor. Don’t you ever do that to me again. I’m worth more than that, and you know it.” She stepped back, leaving cold space and his heated erection between them.
He swallowed, his pounding heart trying to beat some common sense into his brain again. It wasn’t working. He let go of the bleachers and advanced. “You have some fucking nerve. You’re the one up there prom-queening it with goddamn Ryler.”
She stood her ground as he came at her. And he knew he was intimidating. Shit, full-grown men stepped aside when he was coming. But Candy raised her chin. He was amazed at the fight in her, right there. He pulled her into a dip, just like fucking Pyler had, except he did it like a man who wanted a woman and knew what to do with her body. Candy needed to push him away; she needed to turn her head.
Instead she groaned and bit his bottom lip hard enough to draw blood. He put his hand between her legs and dragged it up to her breast, squeezing hard so she would feel it through her coat. She sunk her nails into the skin at his neck. She was a buried treasure. He was sure as fuck no one knew about this side of her. Only he could get her panting like she was. He spanked her bottom once.
“Ow.” She was shocked.
He stopped kissing and looked her in the face as he spanked her again, more forcefully this time.
Her “Ow” was quieter, and the hunger in her eyes far deeper than her years.
Again he spanked her. And this time she purred. Fucking purred. He began slow, circular caresses over the denim that covered her ass. He was desperate to see the red imprints from his hand.
“Fuck it.” Beckett picked her up and set her back against the metal support he’d tried to cling to before.
They weren’t alone. Red tips of cigarettes glowed, gentle murmurs of illicit behavior could be heard if you knew how to listen for trouble. Still, he held her against the pole and mimicked the motions he was desperate to do with her. He dropped his mouth to the zipper on her coat, which kept her safe from all his intentions. He used his teeth to pull it down to her cleavage. He buried his face, licking and nuzzling her sweet-smelling neck. He used his chin to move material so he could access more of her chest. She smelled like goddamn candy. His dick could pack gunpowder in a cannon it was so fucking hard.
After a moment, the murmurs added up. Too many. He glanced around and noticed the cigarettes being stubbed out. He let his prize slide down the metal gently. He leaned down to kiss her lips, then her forehead, right under the edge of her fuzzy hat before whispering, “Go. Cops are here. Go.”
And then Candy, sweet-smelling, homework-doing Candy, stuck her hand in his jacket’s hidden pocket and took the gun out. He pulled her hands and his gun close to make sure the safety was on before letting her tuck it into her bra.
“Anything else?” she asked.
And then he slipped the rest of the merchandise in his left pocket into her right one. She turned and left.
“And don’t you ever talk to me again, Taylor. I have a boyfriend!” She stormed away as the resource officer stepped up next to him.
“You have a way with the ladies, son.”
“I’m not your son.”
“That’s the truth right there. ’Cause if you were, you’d be on that field kicking footballs instead of selling at my school.”
When Beckett was let off with a warning due to lack of evidence, his one thought was of her. Candy was so perfect for him it hurt.

Just One Taste is the second book in author Lexi Blake’s Masters & Mercenaries: Topped Series and without fail, each time I read a new book by Ms. Blake, I am reminded that I really, really, need to go back and read the books I have missed in the series.  Yes, I know, I actually haven’t read them all and I must because Ms. Blake has definitely moved into my top ten favorite author list.

Former Navy SEAL turned chef Eric and Top employee Deena have managed to hide their attraction for one another…well, at least they think they have.  The entire staff knows it’s only a matter of time before they act on that attraction.  Soon enough they get the chance when they are both accepted into Sanctum’s training program and wind up being paired in a D/s relationship.  They both know this relationship doesn’t have to be one involving sex, and being burned by her ex as badly as Deena was certainly not ready for that type of connection.  Eric was wiling to go any route she wanted.  He just wanted to be given the chance to prove that all men aren’t terrible and if anyone was able to make her believe in love again, it was him…

Eric and Deena may have been able to keep their emotional distance while keeping their relationship strictly business, but once that barrier is broken, will it be the push they need to take things to the next level?  To possibly love again?

Oh, how I loved this book and Eric and Deena.  I know I’ve said this before about Ms. Blake’s books, but it bears repeating that she puts so much emotion into her characters and brings so much more into the D/s relationship and I love it.

I’ve read a lot of books involving BDSM and most of the time, that lifestyle takes over and takes away from the hero and heroine’s relationship.  Never the case with Ms. Blake.  The couples always dominate the story and the D/s relationship never defines who they are.  Yes, it’s a part of them and it builds a deeper level connection, but it’s just a piece of who they are as a couple.  And let me say, this couple is just wonderful.

Eric, while looking damaged on the outside, is solid on the inside. He is loyal, kind, patient, understanding, and loves with his whole heart.  But make no mistake…he is all Dom and when he flips that switch?  Holy yum! Deena is rightfully wary of men after her ex really did a number on her.  She doesn’t want to have feelings for Eric and wants to keep him at arm’s length.  Of course with a guy like Eric, that is surely easier said than done.  They nicknamed him Captain America, and he lives up to that persona and then some.  He has been through so much, from war to family loss, and he never once let it have any other effect on him than to learn to appreciate the good he still has and always to look forward to the future.

Their relationship moves at a slow and steady pace and was an absolute joy to read.  I was pulling for the from the very first page and loved to read their relationship unfold.  Of course, we also get to see a lot of the characters we have grown to love over the series and I always enjoy what they bring to the table in each book.  Such a wonderful gang of characters! If you’ve never read a Lexi Blake book, you truly must.

Thank you. Ms. Blake, for another emotional and sexy read and for giving us Eric and Deena!

Excerpt:

“Why? Why would you want me?” All her arrogance was gone.

“Because we’re friends and I like you and you’re gorgeous. I’ve wanted to sleep with you from the moment I saw you. That might not be what you want to hear, but it’s the truth. I think we could be good for each other. Neither one of us has had a lover in a long time. Am I right?”

“You’re right,” she replied. “I haven’t even dated anyone since my divorce.”

“Then why not try? If it doesn’t work, we’ll go back to being friends.”

Her head shook. “That never happens.”

“I don’t know what kind of douchebags you’ve been dating, but I’m still friends with almost every woman I’ve ever dated. It doesn’t have to end in either happily ever after or hate. Especially if we’re both honest. The contract is for six weeks. I can promise you right now that I’m still going to like you after six weeks. You be honest with me. Were you planning on experimenting with your training Dom if you’d had chemistry with him? Before you knew I was the Dom. Would you have given that Dom a chance?”

She nodded silently.

“Well, then I suppose we’ll have a very abstinent training period and then we’ll go our separate ways when it comes to the club. I guess Big Tag and the shrink aren’t as smart as they think they are.” He wasn’t about to give up. This was only the beginning of a very long battle, but it was time to retreat. “We’ll talk about the contract later tonight and set up all the rules. I’ll still have to touch you during the scenes, but I’ll make it as impersonal as possible.”

“We don’t know that we have chemistry,” she said quietly, making no move to grab the bags.

He shrugged. “I guess we won’t know.”

He turned to begin helping her. He would take the bags out to her car and then let Grace know she was on her way. Someone would meet her in the parking garage to help her bring everything up. He would spend the afternoon planning menus with Chef and heading to the farmer’s market to find fresh vegetables for dinner.

A hand on his arm gently pulled and he turned.

Deena was standing right there, her face turned up to him, her eyes wide. “Shouldn’t we know?”

She went on her toes and pressed her mouth to his. He went still, unwilling to frighten her away. Soft lips moved over his as her hands found his waist. She was tentative, but he could sense the fire in her. Those hands told the real tale. They moved restlessly, as though she had them on a leash. He wanted that leash taken off.

When she ended the kiss and stared up at him, he decided to go for broke. She wanted to see if they had chemistry? He could show her how volatile they could be.

“My turn,” he whispered before he took control. His hands slid up her neck, fingers sinking into the soft, silky strands of her hair.

He kissed her, moving his lips over hers, commanding her. The minute he took control those hands of hers started to move, sliding up the muscles of his back, her body pressing in. He felt her relax as though happy to not be the one in charge. Deena could take control of a room of diners and work that floor with an iron will, but she was shy about this. She needed him to take charge of the physical part.

He could do that. It wouldn’t be sexy if she weren’t so together in the rest of her life. He kissed her again and again, his tongue finally moving over her full bottom lip. She groaned and her mouth opened, welcoming him inside.

The kiss turned wild, their tongues playing against each other as their bodies came together. He could feel her rubbing against him. He would bet her body was soft, her pussy already getting slick and ready for him.

He was so ready for her.

And if he took her right here on the prep table, she would likely run away forever. She wasn’t ready. Not even close.

He broke off the kiss, brushing his lips lightly against hers one last time. He’d promised her control. It was damn iron will that got him to take his hands off her. She was so sweet looking with her hair mussed and her lips puffy from kissing. This was how he wanted to see her all the time. Sweet and willing and ultimately satisfied.

Satisfaction would have to wait.

“We have plenty of chemistry, sweetheart.”

My Review:

Being a huge fan of Kimberly Kincaid and her writing, I am always excited to read her new work and I gotta say…Holy Hotness, Batman! It made zero difference that this was a short story because Ms. Kincaid masterfully packed in heat, emotion, and two wonderful characters.

Emilio is working as a dancer in the hottest male revue in town just biding his time until he can make a break into the music industry.  Of course, this is the same industry Sophie was trying to get away from.  Just because her father had made producing music his life, doesn’t mean she wanted any part of it…which is why she worked quietly in a diner, went to school, and never admitted who her father was.

Fate has a plan for these two, however.  They definitely met for a reason when Emilio started coming into the diner Sophie worked in and soon the attraction starts to build…

Immediately I knew this story was going to get intense.  Seeing as though Emilio wanted to break into the very world Sophie was running from.  But their relationship grew in spite of that connection and not because of it which made me enjoy it all the more. The flow of this story from heated to emotional scenes was just perfect and was beautiful.  Of course, there is a moment towards the end when I thought I was going to die and that things were doomed for Emilio and Sophie’s relationship after a certain secret was revealed. But because Ms. Kincaid always writes some amazing endings, it turns out I had nothing to worry about. Whew!

Overall, this was a sexy, hot, and fabulous read that I highly recommend.  Thank you. Ms. Kincaid, for another awesome story!

Designed for Murder by Avery Flynn….Blog Tour Stop & Review

Designed for Murder (Killer Style 4) by Avery Flynn

Date of Publication: November 10, 2015

Blurb

This book can be read as a standalone!

Devastated after he discovers the woman he loved and his partner in the role-playing game, Magic Battledome, was a psychotic killer, Maltese Security’s resident computer genius, SciFi fan and geek-about-town Carlos Castillo retreats into his work. Tossing aside all ties to the Magic Battledome community, he eats, sleeps and breaths investigations. He’s determined to prove to the rest of the team—and himself—that he’s not all book smart and street stupid. He pleads for a case and finally gets one the boss thinks is right up his alley. Someone is targeting a Live Action Role Playing (LARP) Magic Battledome team, delivering vicious beatings before robbing them of their costumes. To solve the case, Carlos has to dive back into the world he’d abandoned.

Mika Ito loves creativity in all its forms. As a textile designer and a LARPer, she combines her two favorite things by creating costumes for her fellow Magic Battledome elves. But when someone starts targeting her fellow LARPers and the police don’t seem to be much help, she hires Maltese Security to solve the case. If a reformed sinner is the most devoted, then a former LARPer is the most rudely dismissive and Carlos Castillo fits the bill. But when they discover that the material she’s been using for the costumes has been soaked in liquid cocaine by someone in her supply chain, they must work together to solve the case. Especially now that the bad guy is doing whatever it takes to retrieve the tainted material—including having lethal designs on Mika’s life.

My Review:

Designed for Murder is the fourth installment in author Avery Flynn’s Killer Style series, and although it can be read as a standalone, I have loved this entire series and highly recommend reading them all regardless.  This story was just as fast-paced and sexy as the others but there is just something about these two sexy geeky characters that puts it in the lead as my fave of the series thus far.  I loved it!

With so many things to love about this story, it’s hard to know where to start.  Mika is a star in the LARPing world and is determined to get her hands on the person responsible for hurting her gaming family.  It’s that determination that leads her to Maltese Security.  She’s no-nonsense and speaks what’s on her mind and I loved reading her.  Carlos has been burned in the past after falling for the wrong woman and because of her, he had given up the on-line gaming part of his life.  An on-line world hew as a gaming god in.  Now he was hell-bent on working cases in Maltese that didn’t include computers whatsoever.  Man, does fate have a plan for these two!

From start to finish, the heat and action in this story kept me glued to each page and every word.  This book starts out with a bang (pun intended lol!) and just got better and better.  Mika and Carlos are beyond smoking hot together and having to work together to stop these attacks added a layer I loved.  Mainly because after their initial meeting, neither one thought they’d ever see each each other again. Talk about a surprise when your supposed one night stand walks into your meeting at the security company you want to hire.  Their chemistry was undeniable and even though neither one was looking for a relationship, their pasts and both having gone through a traumatic event, will connect them on a level much deeper than just a working relationship.

The who-dun-it aspect was also done really well and was a mystery I loved getting to the bottom of.  But I have to say, my overall favorite thing about this story and these characters was the LARPing and the geekiness.  It was a fresh element and one I think a lot of us can relate to.  I’m a geek at heart myself so I loved the costumes and gaming.  Such a great addition to an amazing story.

Entertaining and lovable characters, sex, mystery, action…this book really is the whole package!  Thank you, Ms. Flynn, for another stellar addition to the Killer Style series.  I can’t wait to see what’s next!

About Avery Flynn

Avery Flynn has three slightly-wild children, loves a hockey-addicted husband and is desperately hoping someone invents the coffee IV drip.

She fell in love with romance while reading Johanna Lindsey’s Mallory books. It wasn’t long before Avery had read through all the romance offerings at her local library. Needing a romance fix, she turned to Harlequin’s four books a month home delivery service to ease the withdrawal symptoms. That worked for a short time, but it wasn’t long before the local book stores’ staffs knew her by name.

Avery was a reader before she was a writer and hopes to always be both. She loves to write about smartass alpha heroes who are as good with a quip as they are with their *ahem* other God-given talents. Her heroines are feisty, fierce and fantastic. Brainy and brave, these ladies know how to stand on their own two feet and knock the bad guys off theirs.

For seven years he’s
fought for his country. Now he’ll fight for her.
Army Ranger Dare Conners has been through hell. He’s left combat behind, yet the memories that refuse to fade are proving just as dangerous. Ordered to take R&R, he joins his buddy for beaches, beers, and babes—if that can’t cure him, nothing will. But when he meets Berkeley, a woman who affects him like no one else, a new kind of battle begins . . .
An Admiral’s daughter, Berkeley knows her life has been planned since birth. The right school, the right boyfriend—and now that she’s graduated—the right marriage. But after years of being right, Berkley is ready to be a little wrong. And Dare Conners has wrong written all over him. The sexy soldier has a body built for sin and secrets he won’t share. What starts as a fling quickly grows into something more. But summer can’t last forever, and when the truth comes out, both Berkeley and Dare could be in for quite a fall.

My review:

Last True Hero is the newest work from author Diana Gardin and being a huge fan of Ms. Gardin’s work, I was so excited for this book.  Well, from start to finish, I loved every second of it!
Dare is at a crossroads in life.  His Ranger days are pretty much behind him and without a real place to call home, he ends up in a small town, staying with a close friend, and trying to figure out what’s next.  He never expected to meet a woman like Berkley.  He never expected to want to say in this small town.  He never expected to fall in love.
Berkley is looking forward to one thing: getting out from under her parents’ controlling thumbs.  She never wanted the buttoned up and prim and proper life they have planned out for her.  The only problem is she just doesn’t know how to do it.  Enter Dare.  He is everything she wasn’t looking for but everything she wants.  Could he have entered her life at this moment for a reason?
The obstacles Dare and Berkley face are numerous and seem impossible.  But together, they can face it all….if they just give it a chance.
Oh, I loved this book!  This was just one of those stories that you start and can’t put down.  From amazing characters, a great small town del and to relationships between friends, there was so much to love.  The relationship between Dare and Berkley grows at a delicious pace with a lot of three steps forward, one step back, and I loved it.  Dare is struggling with getting his feet under him and has a heartbreaking past with a childhood spent in foster car after his parents death and now struggling with PTSD.  He’s strong and resilient, though, and has a wonderful outlook on life and I loved it.  He takes care of Berkeley and has such a soft side and a huge heart.  Truly the whole package! Berkley is in a tough spot with being and adult but not being treated like one.  I was rooting for her from the very beginning to have the courage to tell her parents what she really wants out of life.  She is a tough cookie but respects her parents and hates to think she would let them down if she headed down a different path than the one they planned for her.  Man, I was pulling for these two to get the change at love that they truly deserved!
Adding to the growing relationship between Dare and Berkeley are some amazing friends and a bit of drama when Dare’s troubled brother comes to town.  Whew, that was a nerve-wracking situation for sure!
Overall, this is a well-written and well-rounded story that I know any romance lover will adore. Thank you, Ms. Gardin for a fantastic story!  I can’t wait to see what’s next for this amazing group of characters.

review

Ok – so don’t bite me head off, but this is the first time I have read a book by K. Bromberg. I know, I know – I have been completely missing out and I get that now. And I will be going back and reading the other books in this series.

This is the one book in this series that can be read as a standalone and I absolutely fell in head first. And I was pulled under completely. I wasn’t really sure what to expect when I jumped into this book. But all the thrills, excitement and holy sh*t moments kept me glued to my kindle.

Tanner immediately intrigued me. He’s very much an alpha in every way. He takes no sh*t and does what he wants. He’s very street smart and intuitive. But he throws himself into his work to avoid the tougher things in his life.

BJ/Beaux is not what he expected. She deals out sh&t as quickly as he. And she’s his new photographer who won’t back down from him. But she too has her own shit that she isn’t handling well.

I think another factor that made this book so damn enthralling was the setting. It’s fast paced and action packed. And that’s how the entire book plays out. These two are forced to be together practically 24/7 and that makes up for an explosive storyline. This book is full of suspense, surprises and lots of action.

Kristy – you have earned yourself another huge fan! Bravo.

Excerpt

“Beaux!” Even when I say her name, I’m cursing myself for it. “Beaux!” She just keeps walking, causing my better judgment to win out over my obstinacy.

“I said stay away . . . and it’s BJ to you.” She stops and turns around, but a passerby on the sidewalk bumps harshly against her shoulder. Her small frame sways from the contact, and I’m beside her in two strides.

“You can’t go that way unless you’re looking for trouble.” I decide to ignore her comment.

She just shakes her head and starts walking away from me, but at least she’s moving in the direction of the hotel. I swear I hear her mutter something about always looking for trouble, but I miss the rest of it when a car passes in between us, the sound drowning out her voice.

My feet kick up the dirt on the street as I try to catch up to her. I lie to myself that I want to talk to her to establish some kind of ground rules about how we’ll work together, try to restore a professional level, but I know I’m just making sure she gets back into the confines of the hotel safely.

The barely chilled air-conditioned lobby of the hotel meets us as we enter, but it feels like heaven in contrast to the stifling heat outside. If she knows I’m beside her, she doesn’t acknowledge it, and that’s fine with me. I just want to make sure she’s nice and tucked away in her room where I don’t have to worry about her for a bit while I try to drum up some leads.

The elevator car opens on cue as we approach. I step in right behind her, lean against the rear wall, and fold my arms across my chest to mimic her posture. The door closes, but neither of us moves in a game of chicken. Just when the doors start to open up again without the car ascending, Beaux steps forward and presses the button for the twelfth floor. She looks over to me and raises her eyebrows in question.

“My room, please. You remember where that is, right?” I angle my head, stare at her, and enjoy watching her cheeks flush with anger.

I wait for the snide comment to come, but she just turns and faces the doors of the elevator without pushing the button for the eighth floor. Tension is so thick in the car, you can all but see it.

“I don’t trust you,” I say evenly, but it cuts through the silence.

“Good,” she says matter-of-factly as the car alerts our arrival on the twelfth floor. “Be careful whom you trust—the devil was once an angel, you know.”

And with that she walks off the elevator without another word, her comment already replaying in my mind.
