Drunk Dial by Penelope Ward…..Review Tour Stop

From New York Times bestselling author Penelope Ward, comes a new, sexy standalone novel.

It seemed like a good idea at the time. Look up Landon Roderick, that boy from childhood whom I’d never been able to forget—even though he so easily forgot about me—and call him.

Then again, anything sounds like a good idea when you’ve had a little too much wine before bed, right? It was supposed to be just a quick, meaningless, prank call. Instead, I went off on him—unloading thirteen years of pent-up emotions.

I didn’t think he’d call me back.

I certainly could never have anticipated the weeks of sexually tense phone conversations that followed as I got to know the man he’d become.

Turned out, Landon had never really forgotten me, either. That special connection we had was still there. I opened up to him, but there were also things about me he didn’t know. And he had his own secrets.

Over the countless hours we talked on the phone, I wondered what would happen if we actually saw each other. One night, I did something impulsive again. Only this time, I went to the airport and booked a ticket to California. We were about to find out if one phone call could bring two lost souls together or if my drunk dial really was all just a big mistake.

A complete STANDALONE.

My Review:

Ok, so Penelope Ward is one of my newest auto-buy authors and with every book she releases I grow to love her even more. Drunk Dial was no exception.  From the cover alone, I knew this book was going to be amazing…and, oh my, was it ever.

I’m a sucker for a friends to lovers story and when you add the elements Ms. Ward into that trope, I’m telling you this book is just so damn good.   Let me elaborate…two childhood friends become separated after a bit of a messy situation.  The friends go their separate ways, neither one knowing where the other had ended up or having any clue into the messy roads each had taken over their years apart.  Fast forward to a drunken night when girl tracks down boy and makes a phone call.  And, as they say, the rest is history.

Both Rana and Landon have been broken and repaired over the years.  Each traveling a rocky road to make up the people they are today.  Had they not traveled those roads apart things never would have turned out so perfectly for them when Rana made that fateful phone call.  Their story was sexy and sweet and had me swooning so many times as I read.  Landon is thoughtful and kind, wrapped up in this tatted up sexy package that I can imagine all readers are drooling over! Rana has a huge heart that she opens to those she holds close and she is a true gem.  I loved reading them as they reconnected, reminiscing about the past and learning about the people they have become over the years.  There were adorable notes Rana shared from their shared childhood and fond memories Landon held close. There were also a few “whoa” moments that I won’t spoil for you but I will tell you that it had me loving these two characters even more.  It was truly sublime!

Drunk Dial is one of those books you pick up, start reading, and immediately get lost in.  Thank you. Ms. Ward, for another amazing read!

Excerpt:

“You’re really going through with it? With a mortal?” Sebastian asked in dismay.

Ulrik smiled and raised a mug of wine in salute. “Who am I to question love?”

Sebastian looked out over the vast rugged glen and the loch below from their perch atop a mountain on Dreagan. “What of children? None of the other humans have carried a bairn to term? Your line could die out.”

“Only the cosmos knows if I’ll be a father.” Ulrik shrugged and took a long drink. “I’m happy. That’s all I care about.”

Sebastian didn’t have the heart to mention that years from now, his friend might feel differently. He didn’t understand why Ulrik wasn’t considering every possibility, because once he was mated, that was it. He would be bound for eternity. Though, to be fair, a King didn’t go through with a ceremony if there were doubts, and it was obvious Ulrik wanted the human for his mate.

Ulrik released a sigh, his gold eyes bright. “One day you’ll find love, Bast. I hope I’m there to see it.”

“Finding love is the least of my worries.”

“Ah, that’s right.” Ulrik nodded, a frown forming. “So your brother is intent on marrying that young dragon?”

Sebastian drained his wine. “Aye, and that’s a sore subject. Let us move to happier things. Like your mating ceremony. I hear the feast is going to be one spoken about for ages.”

“It’ll be the first time so many mortals, Dragon Kings, and dragons will be in one place.”

“Are you worried at all?”

Ulrik laughed and placed his hand behind him, leaning back. “Why would I be? You sound like Con, always fretting about something or other. We’ve lived in peace for over two centuries now. My mating will be the first of many such alliances. Just wait and see.”

Their peace wasn’t exactly stable, but with Ulrik’s euphoric state of mind he likely wouldn’t recall the growing unrest of the humans or the continued displeasure of the dragons. It was something the Kings spoke about often. Only a few hours earlier Con had met with some mortals to ensure the peace continued.

As usual, Ulrik saw only the good in everything. No matter the trouble or difficulty, to Ulrik there was always a silver lining. It was one of the things Sebastian admired about his friend. And it was why Ulrik was so popular with dragons, Kings, and mortals alike.

EXCERPT:

“There seems to be an explosion in the jackass population,” I reply, and sigh, passing my glass to Kat for a refill.

“Where are you meeting them?” he asks, and I bite my lip.

“I don’t want to tell you.”

“Online,” he says with a nod.

“I didn’t say that!”

“Didn’t have to. If you met him at the gym or the grocery store, or somewhere else in person, you wouldn’t be embarrassed.”

“I’m not embarrassed.”

“Yes, you are. Otherwise, you wouldn’t mind telling me.”

“Fine.” I sigh and rub my forehead with my fingers. “I met them online.”

“Stop that,” he says.

“I don’t know where else I’d meet people,” I reply. “I’m at work at least fifty hours a week. I don’t do school or clubs or church, and I rarely go to the grocery store because I always eat here.”

“I could stop feeding you,” Mia interjects and I toss her a glare.

“I’m just saying, if you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always gotten.”

“I don’t understand any of the words you just said.” I squint at him, trying to process.

“Switch it up,” he says with a grin. “Try to meet people somewhere else. I mean, you didn’t meet me online, and I’m not an asshole.”

“Sure, you’re cute, and you look like you have your shit together, but I suspect that once I got to know you I’d learn that you have mommy issues and fourteen dogs.”

“You might,” he says with a thoughtful nod. “I do hide those things well. All I’m saying is, stop using the dating sites and try meeting people in real life.”

“Yeah. Easy for you to say.” I pout into my wineglass. “Do I need to send you some money for this counseling session?”

“Nah, the first one’s on me,” he says, tossing that crazy-hot smile at me again. “Just don’t combine Star Wars and Star Trek anymore and that’s payment enough for me.”

He pulls a few bills out of his wallet and tosses them on the bar, then stands to leave.

“Have a good night, and good luck,” he says.

“Thanks.” Just as he’s almost out of view, I call out. “Wait! I didn’t ask your name.”

“Trevor,” he says, and my stomach immediately does at least four cartwheels. “Trevor Cooper.”

“You’re early,” is all I can think to say. My cheeks burning, my fingertips immediately tremble. “You’re not supposed to be here for two more days.”

“I like to come early. Get the lay of the land, that sort of thing.” He smiles and waves. “See you in a couple of days.”

He walks away, and as soon as I hear the front door close, I turn to my friends and just stare at them in utter horror.

“Tell me that didn’t just happen.”

Read the Free Short Story Set Between Becoming a Legend and Chasing a Legend!

Well, Sarah Robinson has proved that I can enjoy a book without a whole lot angst or drama in the main plot line. Chasing a Legend is a very sweet and easy read that had me smiling most of the time (except for the part with the dog and my animal loving heart was crushed).

I learned about Sarah when I read her book, Nudes, and immediately loved her writing style. While the Kavanagh series is a complete opposite of Nudes in genre, her writing style is just a strong and intriguing.

Sarah really knows how to get you vested in these characters and keep you glued to the story from start to finish. It’s been awhile since I have enjoyed a book where there wasn’t a whole lot of drama or angst involved that kept my attention. But Sarah proved that with great writing and strong characters, you can keep a reader interested.

Chasing A Legend is Quinn Kavanagh’s story. He’s always been the man behind the scenes at his family’s MMA gym. He’s the manager and agent for not just his brother, but many other talented MMA fighters and put his family’s gym back on the radar. But he’s got secret passion that no-one even knows about it. He doesn’t see it as anything other than a hobby. Until his accident.

Kiera Finley grew up with the Kavanaghs and she was closet to Quinn. Quinn was always there to get her out trouble and step in when need be. Six years ago, before she left for college, she gave herself over to Quinn. What she hadn’t realized was how that one night caused unexpected lines to be drawn in their friendship.

Quinn is starting PT as part of his recovery from his accident and Kiera is his new doctor. Neither expected to ever see the other again, especially in these circumstances. Now that everything is out in the open, Kiera is determined to heal more than his physical pains. And that is all I am giving you!!

If you really enjoy HEA books, this is one you have to read. I cried, laughed and cheered these two on. I love Quinn’s family (so much so that I am going back and reading the previous books). It’s such a sweet and heartfelt read that will leave you with a smile on your face.

Advance Praise:

“Robinson concludes her Kavanagh Legends contemporary quartet (after Becoming a Legend) with a perfect blend of smoldering heat and gentle tenderness. After an accident, mixed martial arts fighter Quinn Kavanagh is placed under the care of physical therapist Keira Finley, his first and only love. She has no idea that she broke his heart when she left for college six years earlier. They’d been best friends since they were kids and never experienced life without each other’s unwavering support, but when Quinn didn’t ask her to stay, Keira needed to prove to herself that she could make it on her own. Quinn’s emotional scars run a lot deeper than the physical ones. He’s afraid to open himself up to Keira again, but with the encouragement of his boisterous, fun-loving family, he learns to give to himself as freely as he’s always given to others. This endearing story showcases Keira and Quinn’s easy banter, familiar warmth, and unquenchable heat. Quinn is the last Kavanagh brother to meet his mate, but subtle mentions of potential future love matches among their friends will leave readers eager for spin-offs.” – Publisher’s Weekly

Exclusive Excerpt:

“I’m leaving Legends now. My bags are packed, so be ready to go as soon as I get there,” Quinn said into the phone, his thick arm flexing as he twisted it to look at his watch.
“UK, here we come!” his older brother Kane shouted through the line. Quinn could practically see him fist-pumping the air. “You’re the best manager ever, Q!”
“Better believe it, Killer.” Quinn laughed before disconnecting the call and pushing his phone into a small interior pocket of the leather jacket that fit snugly over his chiseled back and broad shoulders.
Straddling his prized possession, a classic Ducati he’d kept in pristine condition for years, Quinn pulled on his helmet and gloves. His shaggy black hair peeked out from under the edges of the helmet, framing his face. Though covered in leather, glimpses of his love of ink showed on his neck and hands. What could not be seen was how the tattoos continued onto his chest and back as well. He loved the images, and each one had a special meaning to him—a falcon across his chest in midflight to symbolize his yearning for freedom, a dragon wrapping his arm to mark the fire in his blood, the Kavanagh family crest and motto in Gaelic on his back to represent family pride, along with phrases and names of people and moments that had made him who he was.
But the small metal bar through his eyebrow, or the piercings in his ear? Those were just for fun.
The motorcycle roared to life beneath him, easily heard from blocks away, as he pulled out onto the main street and headed for his parents’ house to meet his brother. He might not live there any longer, but he’d grown up in that house, and it would always feel like home. The whole neighborhood was his home; he knew everyone there, and everyone knew the Kavanaghs—for better or worse.
Quinn rode past the quaint houses in the Woodlawn area of the Bronx, going through a mental checklist of everything he needed to do before Kane competed next week. The International MMA Championship, held in London this year, was the biggest mixed martial arts competition in the world. Kane had won that championship the last two years, giving him the title of World’s Greatest MMA Fighter. Kane planned to win a third time next week and Quinn was eager to stand by his side when he did.
It’d been three short years since his brother had been thrust into the public spotlight after winning his first U.S. National Championship in Vegas. Quinn beamed proudly at the memory. Even though he wasn’t the one in the cage, he still felt a part of his brother’s success, having managed his entire career from the beginning. Kane’s win was Quinn’s win. It was a win for all the Kavanaghs—something they each really needed after everything the family had been through.
As he approached his parents’ street, he signaled with both his right hand and turn signal that he was switching lanes. A large truck whistled past, completely ignoring his signal. Quinn yanked the bike to the left, narrowly escaping a collision as his heart leapt into his throat.
Asshole.
Taking a deep breath to calm the adrenaline shooting through his body at the close call, Quinn carefully looked around, and once he’d confirmed that the right lane was clear, he again signaled his intentions. Sliding the bike into the right lane, he accelerated, eager to get to his childhood home.
That was his last thought before it happened.
His family.
How happy he was.
How much he loved his life.
A silver sedan parallel-parked against the curb nosed out into the right lane, directly in front of Quinn’s bike. His eyes widened as the air left his lungs, and he attempted to swerve around the sudden obstacle.
But there was no time. There was no space.
The front wheel of his bike slammed into the front wheel well of the sedan, and Quinn was weightless. He barely had a moment to blink before he was twisting through the air—over the handlebars, over his bike, over the sedan.
He heard the impact before he felt it.
His body skidding over the unforgiving pavement as wind rushed past him—a crunching, tumbling screech. Car horns firing, people screaming—or was he screaming? The echoes inside his helmet both muted and deafened.
But then he felt it, and it was fucking hell.
The crack of bones, a searing pain shooting through him. Every nerve ending in his body set on fire at the force of impact, consuming him till he was certain he couldn’t stand another second of it. Sliding across the pavement, his skin burned against the grating asphalt, his leather gear no match for the unforgiving surface.
And then it was quiet.
So fucking quiet as he stared up at the sun and waited . . . for what, he didn’t know.
He wasn’t connected to his body, but somehow trapped inside it. Quinn tried to call for help, tried to get up, but his lungs and limbs ignored his commands.
Just as his eyes began to flutter closed, the pain overtaking him, pushing him beyond what he could ever handle . . . he saw her. Her strawberry-blond hair falling down past her soft pink cheeks, the sun creating a halo behind her. Her fingertips grazed his face, and she whispered to him so softly he barely made out what she said. Light blue eyes, nearly translucent in their brightness, told him to just hold on . . . don’t let go . . . don’t give up.
And then she was gone.
And so was he.

Dragon Burn is novella number 14 in the 2017 1,001 Dark Nights line-up and is also part of author Donna Grant’s incredible Dark Kings world.  Ms. Grant writes dragons like nobody’s business and I have loved reading her fantastic paranormal for years now and with every one of her releases I fall more and more in love with the worlds she builds.

What do you get when you take a woman who’s been hurt and sworn off love and a Dragon King on a mission to find the person responsible for a war in his world and put them together? Incredible passion and chemistry, that’s what. Sebastian is on a mission and when he believes Gianna may be the key to finding what he’s looking for, it’s game on! He’s sexy, and charming, and speaks with a Scottish brogue.  Good luck resisting that!  Of course, as his plan is put into motion, real feelings and a real connection start to grow and it’s at that moment that I knew cooking dinner that night would have to wait, because no way was I putting this story down until I finished!

Adding to the delicious heat and chemistry was the mystery as to who was responsible for the war.  I won’t give anything away but I will say, buckle up my friends, for twists, turns, and danger.  Loved it all!

Whether you’re just picking up a Donna Grant story for the first time with Dragon Burn, or are a long-time fan, I know you will love this story as much as I did! Thank you, Ms. Grant, for another phenomenal read!

The couch dipped with additional weight, Billy sat next to me. His thigh rubbed against mine. He slung his arms out to rest on the back of the couch. I felt his fingers pluck a lock of my hair and toy with it. “I think we should fuck.”

I choked on air. “Excuse me?”

He shrugged a single shoulder. “Not going to lie, flower, I find you attractive. You kind of dress like an elderly gentleman, and it does things to me.”

I looked down at my sensible skirt and cardigan, insulted and turned on all at once.

Billy shifted closer. His nose skimmed my neck. His breath was warm and smelled like whiskey. Goosebumps broke out along my arms. My stomach flipped. A big hand landed on my thigh, and I could feel the heat from his palm all the way through my wool skirt. “I think we should fuck, just once. Get it out of the way.”

Yes. No. Yes. No. My head waged a silent war with my body. Billy’s hand inched higher and at the same time, his teeth grazed the thin skin of my neck. A tortured sound escaped from low in my throat. “No,” I said weakly. I did not sound convincing. Not at all.

Billy paused his assault. “Is that a question or an answer?”

I pushed myself up from the couch, balling my hands into fists. “No. I’m sorry Mr. Wanks I don’t think this is going to work out. Good luck finding a nanny for your daughter.” I grabbed my bag from the floor, and scooped up the resume Billy had so carelessly tossed aside. It still had some use left in it. Fuck him and fuck this.

I was two feet from the door when Billy’s voice stopped me. “Oi, that’s a relief. The last nanny climbed into bed with me while I was sleeping.” He sauntered towards me. “You passed the final test. You’re really hired now.”

My mouth went dry. I wanted to scream. “Test?” I asked, taking note of the bulge in his pants, the very considerable bulge.

Billy adjusted himself with a wicked smile. “I do find you attractive, flower. Like I said, I’ve got a thing for redheads who dress like schoolmarms. Must be some Freudian shit, but I need a nanny who’s here for my little bird, not for me.”

My chin jutted out, offended by his games and ashamed of my own response to him. “I don’t think I’m suited for this position. I’ll ask the agency to send another candidate over as soon as possible.” I reached for the doorknob.

“It pays well over six figures a year, plus room, board, vacation and medical.”

My hand paused. With that kind of money I could pay off my student loans in a year and save a tidy sum. Crap. I turned slowly on my heel to face Billy, and smiled brightly. “What time do we leave tomorrow?”

Charlotte West writes romance about strong heroines and the sexy alpha males who love them. She lives in Washington state with her husband and very large dog (think miniature pony size). Excerpt:

It was too early for this crap.

Standing behind Megan, I was hoping I could just blend into the wall and be forgotten. Then I could lie down and take a nap. Sebastian had stayed to three in the morning, and I was way too tired to do anything remotely physical.

Coach Rogers, also known as Sergeant Rogers or Lieutenant First Class Jerk Face, crossed his arms. He face held a permanent scowl. I’d never seen him smile. Not even when we made it to the play offs last year.

He was also the ROTC drill instructor, so he treated us like we were in boot camp. Today was going to be no different.

“Hit the bleachers,” he ordered. “Ten sets.”

Sighing, I reached up and tugged on the tail of my hair, tightening the ponytail as Megan bounced around, facing me. “Whoever finishes last has to buy the other a smoothie after practice.”

The corners of my lips turned down. “That’s not fair. You’re going to finish first.”

“I know.” Giggling, she tore off toward the indoor bleachers.

Reaching down, I tugged on my black practice shorts and then resigned myself to death by bleacher.

The team hit the metal seats. Sneakers pounded as we worked our way up. At the top row, I smacked the wall as expected. If we didn’t do it, we’d be starting all over. Back down I went, gaze focused on the rows in front of me as my knees and arms pumped. By the fifth round, the legs in my muscles burned, along with my lungs.

I almost died.

More than once.

Once it was over, my legs felt like jelly as I joined Megan on the court. “I’d like a strawberry banana smoothie,” she said, her face flushed pink. “Thank you.”

“Shut up,” I muttered breathlessly as I glanced over to the bleachers. At least I wasn’t last. I twisted back to her. “I’m getting McDonalds.”

Megan snorted as she fixed her shorts. “Of course you are.”

“At least I’m eating eggs,” I reasoned. I’d probably have hell of a lot toner legs and stomach if I got that smoothie after practice instead of the egg mcmuffin and hash brown I was planning to do bad, bad things to.

She wrinkled her nose. “I don’t think those kind of eggs count.”

“That’s sacrilegious to even utter.”

“I don’t think you know what that word means,” she replied.

“I don’t think you know when to shut up.”

Tipping her blonde head back, Megan laughed. Sometimes I wondered how we’d become such close friends. We were polar opposites. She didn’t read unless it was flirting tips in Cosmo or the weekly horoscopes in the magazines her mom had around the house. I, of course, read every book I got my hands on. I was going to be applying for financial aid, and she had a major college fund. Megan only ate McDonalds if she’d been drinking, which wasn’t often, and I ate McDonalds so much I was on a first name basis with the lady who worked the window in the morning.

Her name was Linda.

Megan was more outgoing than me, more willing to try new things, while I was the person always weighing the pros and cons before doing something, finding more cons than there were pros to almost every activity. Megan seemed years younger than seventeen, oftentimes acting like a hyper kitten climbing curtains. She was downright goofy half the time. But what seemed like cluelessness was only surface deep. She was an ace at math without even having to try. On the outside, she appeared to take nothing serious, but she was as bright as she was bubbly.

We both planned—or hoped—to get into UVA, prayed that we’d get housed together, and strived to give Dary the hardest possible time, with love, every day of our lives.

Deciding I was going to order two hash browns and eat them right in front of her face, I cut in front of her as we walked to where our captain was waiting.

Practice was grueling.

Since it was pre-season and a Friday, it was all calisthenics. Lunges. Squats. Suicide sprints. Jumps. Nothing made me feel more out of shape than these kinds of practices. I was dragging ass by the time we wrapped up, sweating in places I didn’t even want to think about.

“Seniors, I need you guys to stick around for a few minutes,” Coach Rogers called out. “Everyone else can head out.

Megan shot me a look as we lumbered to our feet. My stomach ached a little from the sit-ups, so I concentrated on not bending over and crying like a teething baby.

“Our first game is a couple of weeks off, as is our first tournament, but I want you all to make sure you realize how important this season is.” Coach straightened his cap, pulling the bill down. “This isn’t just your final year. This is the time that scouts will be coming to the tournaments. Many of the colleges here in Virginia and surrounding states are looking for freshmen players.”

Pressing my lips together, I loosely crossed my arms. A volleyball scholarship would be sweet. I wanted one. Was going to gun for it, but there were better girls on the team, including Megan.

The likelihood of both of us landing positions at UVA was slim.

“I cannot stress how important your performance will be this season,” Coach droned on. His dark gaze lingered on me in a way that made me feel like he’d noticed just how crappy my sprints had been. “You’re not going to get a do-over. You’re not going to get second chances to impress these scouts. There isn’t a next year.”

Megan’s gaze slid toward mine and her brows lifted about an inch. This was a wee bit dramatic.

Coach went on and on about good life choices or something, and then he was done. Dismissed, our group made our way toward the remaining burgundy and white gym bags.

Megan bumped her shoulder into mine as she reached to grab her water from the top of her bag. “You kind of sucked today.”

“Thanks,” I replied, mopping the sweat off my forehead with the back of my hand. “I feel so much better after hearing that.”

She grinned around the rim of the bottle, but before she could respond, the coach yelled out my last name. “Oh crap,” Megan whispered, widening her eyes.

Swallowing a groan, I pivoted around and jogged over to where he was standing near the net we often had to repeatedly jump in front of. When Coach used your last name, it was a lot like your mom using your full name.

Coach Rogers’s neatly trimmed beard was more salt than pepper, but the man was fit and more than intimidating. He could run those bleachers in half the time Megan could, and right now, he looked like it wanted to order me to do another set of ten. If he did, it would be RIP Lena.

“I was watching you today,” he said.

Oh no.

“Didn’t look like your head was in practice.” He crossed his arms, and I knew I was in for it. “Are you still working at Joanna’s?”

Tensing because we’ve had this conversation before, I nodded. “I closed last night.”

“Well, that explains a lot. You know how I feel about you working when you have practice,” he said.

Yes, I did know. Coach Rogers didn’t think anyone who played sports should work because work was a distraction. “It’s just during the summer.” That was kind of a lie, because I planned to work weekends during the school year. I needed to keep my McDonalds fund fluffy, but he really didn’t need to know any of that. “I’m sorry about practice. I’m just a little tired—”

“A lot tired by the looks of it,” he cut in with a sigh. “You were forcing yourself through every set.”

I guess I wasn’t going to get credit for that effort.

He lifted his chin and stared down at his nose at me. Coach was a beast during practice and the games, but most days I liked him. He cared about his players. Really cared. Last year, he organized a fundraiser for one of the students whose family lost everything in a house fire. I knew he was against animal cruelty, because I saw him wearing an ASPC shirts. But right now, in this moment, I did not like the man at all.

“Look,” he continued. “I know things are tight at home, especially with your father….well, with all of that.”

Clenching my teeth until my jaws ached, I fixed a blank expression on my face. Everyone knew about my dad. It sucked living in a small town.

“And you and your mom could use the extra cash, I get that, but you really need to look at the big picture here. Take these practices more seriously, dedicate more time, and you can up your playing this year. Maybe catch the eye of a scout,” he said. “Then you get a scholarship. Less aid. That’s what you need to be focused on—your future.”

Even though I knew he meant well, I wanted to tell him that my mom and I and my future were really none of his business. But I didn’t say that. I just shifted my weight from one foot to the next, picturing the greasy hash brown in my head.

Oh my God, I was going to smother that baby with ketchup.

“You have talent.”

I blinked. “Really?”

His expression softened a bit as he clapped a hand down on my shoulder. “I think you have a shot at landing a scholarship.” He squeezed gently. “Just keep your eye on tomorrow. Work for it, and there’ll be nothing standing in the way. You understand?”

“I do.” I glanced over to where Megan waited. “A scholarship would be… it would help a lot.”

A way lot.

It would be nice not to spend a decade or more after college working myself out of student loan hell I’d already been warned about.

“Then make it happen, Lena.” Coach Rogers dropped his hand. “You’re the only person standing in your way.”
